Transcript
- 0:02Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Modern Yin
- 0:05Podcast. I'm Kimberly Roberts, your host,
- 0:09and I am so glad you're here. So after the last episode where
- 0:14I talked about the survival brain versus the visionary
- 0:17brain, I had a little spark. And the spark led me to today's
- 0:24episode, which is all about why high functioning women over 40
- 0:30stay in survival mode or stay in the survival brain, right?
- 0:34Because let's face it, they do. So there's something really
- 0:43interesting that I've noticed over the last years of working
- 0:47with women over 40, because that's primarily in my
- 0:51reflexology practice. Most of my patients are women
- 0:56and they're over 40 on on my yoga app, it's the same thing.
- 1:01It's a lot of women over 40. That tends to be the area that I
- 1:05specialize in. I'm also over 42.
- 1:08So that kind of lands. But here's the thing, many of
- 1:13those women appear to be so capable.
- 1:18They are so capable, they're so organized, they're so reliable.
- 1:26And guess what? They're often the ones who have
- 1:30been living in survival mode the longest.
- 1:33And I so deeply know that. I know that for myself.
- 1:38I did too. And you know what?
- 1:42It's survive it. It surprises people.
- 1:44They're like, but she's so capable.
- 1:46She's got all her, you know, like stuff together.
- 1:51But here's the thing. When we hear the phrase survival
- 1:56mode, we tend to imagine, like, absolute chaos, like burnout,
- 2:03breakdowns, people falling apart.
- 2:06And I'm not going to say that that doesn't happen.
- 2:09It absolutely does. But for many women, survival
- 2:15mode actually looks so much different than that.
- 2:19It looks like competence, Yeah. Like high functioning women are
- 2:27incredibly good at adapting. They know how to show up.
- 2:32They know how to get stuff done. They certainly know how to take
- 2:37care of people, solve problems and keep things moving forward.
- 2:43And I'll tell you for a while, those kind of skills, they
- 2:47actually serve you well. But here's the paradox.
- 2:54Those very same strengths that make you capable are also the
- 2:59ones that keep you stuck in survival mode.
- 3:01I'm going to say that again. The same strengths that keep you
- 3:07capable keep you stuck in survival mode.
- 3:13Let me explain. Because when you're good at
- 3:16managing pressure, you become the person that everyone relies
- 3:21on at work, at home, in relationships, and over time,
- 3:32guess what? Your nervous system adapts to a
- 3:36constant background level of tension.
- 3:39It's like, you know, the hum you hear in the background from
- 3:42your, your furnace or whatever, It's like the same kind of
- 3:47thing. It's not dramatic tension, it's
- 3:50just constant pressure, low grade and persistent.
- 3:55And you know what? Eventually that becomes your
- 4:01normal. Kind of sucks, actually.
- 4:10And what's even worse? Survival mode.
- 4:14That looks like success, right? And you see so much of this on
- 4:21social media, but also other places too.
- 4:25So from the outside, your life might look completely fine, like
- 4:29you've got it nailed, you've got life nailed, you're functioning,
- 4:33you're productive, you're responsible, you're not falling
- 4:37apart, right? Everybody's like, Oh my God,
- 4:41look at her. But internally, your jaw is like
- 4:46wired tight. You move your neck just the
- 4:52slightest wrong way and it'll snap.
- 4:56Your shoulders are lifted. Your mind is like a constant
- 5:02spiral of like planning, anticipating, managing,
- 5:06executing. You're always thinking like 3
- 5:10steps ahead. And here's the thing, it's not
- 5:15because something is wrong. It's because your nervous system
- 5:19believes it's your job to hold everything together.
- 5:25And when that becomes your identity, because it does,
- 5:30survival mode stops feeling like survival mode.
- 5:36It just actually feels like life, like that's your normal
- 5:39life. You don't even recognize that
- 5:41you're in survival mode because this is just your baseline.
- 5:47So if that's what happens, then you start to wonder, well, how
- 5:51come this gets like more intense gets worse after 40?
- 5:58Because something shifts in midlife, right?
- 6:03And this is not talked about a lot, but your body changes.
- 6:09For women especially, hormones shift, energy fluctuates in ways
- 6:15it didn't before, and suddenly the strategies, the things that
- 6:20carried you through in your 20s and in your 30s stop working the
- 6:24same way. You can't pull it off, right?
- 6:28Like remember the all? Like I remember years ago when I
- 6:31was in my corporate days and I was working for a high tech
- 6:34company and we had a sleep room. So when we would have big
- 6:41deployments, we would be there basically 24 hours, and maybe
- 6:46you might crash in the sleep room for like half an hour on a
- 6:49bunk bed and then you'd get up and, you know, keep going with
- 6:53the day. Well, you could push through
- 6:56that when you were in your 20s and 30s like I was.
- 7:00But in your 40s, you can't push through that kind of fatigue as
- 7:05easily. It gets really freaking hard to
- 7:07bounce back. That one glass of wine that you
- 7:10have, all of a sudden it's like the next day you're like, I'm so
- 7:13hungover from one glass of wine. Like you can't override your
- 7:18body as effectively. And here's the thing, that's not
- 7:22a sign of weakness. That's just information.
- 7:27Your nervous system is just asking for a different way of
- 7:30operating. It doesn't want more effort.
- 7:34It's like so done with the effort and wants more
- 7:38regulation. But many women interpret this
- 7:43moment so differently. So instead of listening to the
- 7:47signals, they push harder. More discipline.
- 7:54Let me be more productive. More self criticism.
- 7:59Oh boy, do I ever know a lot about that one.
- 8:02Now you're so hard on yourself. Like all of a sudden you're
- 8:07like, there's something wrong with me, I'm broken.
- 8:11You're not broken. But living like that keeps their
- 8:15survival cycle going. And the identity, many of you
- 8:24high functioning women have built an identity around being
- 8:28the reliable one, the strong one, the one who can handle it
- 8:35all, who never falls apart. And identities, they're so
- 8:41powerful because if you spent decades being the capable one,
- 8:48slowing down can feel really uncomfortable.
- 8:51It can feel like failure. It can absolutely feel very
- 8:58unsafe, and not because the stillness is dangerous, OK, It's
- 9:04not because of that, but because it's challenging the role you've
- 9:10been living inside that survival role, that reliable, capable
- 9:16role. So instead of resting and
- 9:20actually soothing and training your nervous system for safety,
- 9:25you just keep going to keep plugging.
- 9:28Instead of regulating, you just manage.
- 9:32Instead of restoring, you cope. And let me tell you something,
- 9:37You do it beautifully and competently.
- 9:39You could get an Oscar award for that performance, but you're
- 9:44still in survival mode. Yeah.
- 9:51So here's the little twist, a little shift, little
- 9:53perspective. This is where modern yin yoga
- 9:58offers a different approach. OK, so instead of asking women
- 10:03to push harder or optimize themselves even further, we
- 10:08actually begin with regulation, where stillness does the real
- 10:12work, the work it's meant to do. Because here's the thing.
- 10:19When your nervous system finally stops bracing, something
- 10:24remarkable happens. You start to slow down, like
- 10:31there's less thoughts. You're not like the hamster on
- 10:34the wheel spiralling around. Your breath just effortlessly
- 10:40starts to get deeper. You have so much more clarity.
- 10:47Like the light bulb moments come up right?
- 10:51And it's not because you're forcing any of that.
- 10:55In fact, if anything, it's the opposite.
- 10:57It's because your system is finally getting the capacity to
- 11:03receive it right. Like I said in the last episode,
- 11:07and I'm going to say this again, and I'm going to say it probably
- 11:10so many other episodes, so get used to this.
- 11:12Safety has to come first, then the clarity will come second,
- 11:17and then the momentum will come third, OK?
- 11:22You can't build momentum when you're in safety.
- 11:25And if you haven't listened to the previous episode, the
- 11:29survival brain versus the visionary brain, I highly
- 11:32recommend you go back to that episode and think about that.
- 11:38So if you're listening to this and you're realizing like sparks
- 11:42are flying here, the light bulb moments are coming up and you're
- 11:45like, wow, I, this is me. Like I've been holding
- 11:48everything together for a really long time.
- 11:52I don't want you to beat yourself up, because guess what?
- 11:56You're not alone in this and you're certainly not failing.
- 12:02It's just your nervous system has adapted to a level of
- 12:06pressure that lasted longer than it was way meant to.
- 12:11You were not meant to stand in front of the Mama bear and her
- 12:14baby bears your whole life. The invitation now is not to
- 12:21become somebody different. OK?
- 12:24Not asking you to make a 180 turn on who you are.
- 12:27It's just about creating some space for regulation to allow
- 12:32your nervous system to shift out of survival mode slowly, gently,
- 12:38consistently. Like, just think of it this way.
- 12:42If you were training your biceps when you first start, you're not
- 12:46picking up a set of weights that are 20 lbs each.
- 12:49You might be starting with 2-3, maybe 5 lbs, right?
- 12:54It's the same thing with nervous system regulation.
- 12:57It's slow, gentle, and consistent.
- 13:00You don't need to aim for like an hour, an hour and a half
- 13:03every single day. Five, 10-15 minutes a day can
- 13:10make such a massive difference. It's those tiny little spaces
- 13:15that all of a sudden eventually you go, oh, that was only 5
- 13:20minutes. Wow, that felt like an hour.
- 13:23My God, I feel so much better now.
- 13:25I want a little more. Can I do 10 minutes tomorrow?
- 13:28Let's see, right? Like this is how you start to
- 13:34build nervous system regulation. So if this is resonating with
- 13:39you, the Soulfully and Yoga app is your place to be.
- 13:43And I'm starting a 14 day unwind and calm March reset.
- 13:48We start March 10th. This isn't anything intense.
- 13:52This isn't a check off the box thing.
- 13:55It's just daily practices anywhere from like 5 minutes.
- 13:59Some are longer and they're just designed to help your nervous
- 14:03system shift to unwind and to get out of that survival mode
- 14:11and in to get to the parasympathetic state.
- 14:14The visionary brain and I'm going to be in there live during
- 14:20the whole time, 14 days, dropping little Nuggets of
- 14:24inspiration, little extra practices, guidelines, tips, so
- 14:29that you don't feel so alone in this journey.
- 14:32Because I'll tell you, whenever you start something new, IT can
- 14:35feel a little scary, but this isn't going to be scary.
- 14:38This is going to be exactly what you've been craving for and
- 14:42maybe even what you've been lying awake at 3:00 AM praying
- 14:46for. So I'm going to leave you with
- 14:49this. High functioning women don't
- 14:51stay in survival mode because they're weak.
- 14:55They stay there because they're strong, because they're capable,
- 15:00because they've learned how to hold everything together.
- 15:05But here's the thing I really want you to think about.
- 15:08Strength also includes knowing when to soften, when to slow
- 15:12down, when to listen, when to regulate, when to allow
- 15:18stillness to do the real work that is modern.
- 15:22Ian and I really hope that you join us in the 14 Day on Wine
- 15:26and Con Challenge. Thanks so much for listening to
- 15:29today's episode. I will certainly see you in the
- 15:32next one.
