- 0:28and let's see where this leads. I've been thinking a lot about
- 0:35what's changed inside of me. What's made those anxious
- 0:39feelings over ruminating gone? What's made me let go when I
- 0:45used to hold on so much and I realized what it is, and it's
- 0:51kind of sad to admit it. It's self respect, understanding
- 0:57my value, my worth, and loving myself.
- 1:02So many people, they don't know it, they hear it, those
- 1:07buzzwords, but they don't care about themselves.
- 1:13They think they do, but they don't.
- 1:16They forget about where they fit in.
- 1:18They forget about why they're there in the 1st place.
- 1:22They forget about themselves. Oh, that bothers me so much.
- 1:29And every time I come across somebody that has forgotten
- 1:33themselves, I see it so clearly. They're trying to win somebody's
- 1:38approval. They're trying to get something
- 1:40from somebody that isn't going to give it.
- 1:44They're bending and inside they're breaking.
- 1:49I used to be that that over giver, mega people pleaser, that
- 1:56person that thought that if I could just love a little harder,
- 1:59hold on a little longer, maybe that relationship could work.
- 2:05Maybe I could save that friendship.
- 2:08Maybe I could change somebody's ideas about themselves or about
- 2:13me. And maybe I could convince
- 2:15myself by doing all this that what I'm doing is right, even
- 2:21when it felt so wrong. I started thinking about this
- 2:26when I went to go see Elizabeth Gilbert speak.
- 2:29She was in Los Angeles promoting a new book.
- 2:32It's called All the Way to the River.
- 2:35When I signed up to hear her speak, I didn't know she was
- 2:38promoting a book. I just wanted to see somebody on
- 2:42a stage for an hour and a half, just a mic in hand and her
- 2:48stories. I thought maybe one day I'd be
- 2:52doing that, so I wanted to see somebody do it.
- 2:55Well, when people hear my podcast, a lot of people say,
- 3:00oh, you're having an E Pray Love moment.
- 3:04When they first started saying that, I had no idea what they
- 3:06were talking about. I had never read E Pray Love and
- 3:09I'd never seen the movie. Since then I've become a fan of
- 3:13her work and I've seen the movie, but I didn't know about
- 3:17this book. But I learned a lot after I
- 3:21heard her speak. What I walked away with was
- 3:25maybe I'm a little bit more like Elizabeth Gilbert than I
- 3:27thought. She talked about how she would
- 3:30over invest in relationships, how she would do things that
- 3:36were kind of too much, allow people to get away with things
- 3:43that normally you wouldn't. For her, she found out that she
- 3:47was a love addict. For me, I found out that I told
- 3:51that line, but I'm not all the way a love addict.
- 3:55Most of the reason why I did the things I did was because love
- 4:00was always conditional in my life.
- 4:02I think a lot of children have that.
- 4:05We just don't admit it. But when you admit it, you
- 4:08realize you're not alone, and you realize that you did the
- 4:12best you could given the situation you were given.
- 4:16In my family, I always knew that my mom was going to choose
- 4:21differently. People always say parents have
- 4:25unconditional love for their children.
- 4:26They would do anything for their kids.
- 4:29But the reality I faced in my household was very different.
- 4:33My dad was a workaholic, and he was never going to quit.
- 4:36He didn't come home very often. At night we barely had dinner
- 4:39with him. If I asked him to choose me or
- 4:42work, he would choose work and then say why he was choosing
- 4:46work and it would be some kind of excuse.
- 4:48Like how else am I going to provide for my kids?
- 4:51I work because I love my children.
- 4:53I know that now to not be the case.
- 4:56Yes, people have to work, but he worked to escape.
- 5:01My mother on the other hand, many, many times I would say to
- 5:05her, please stop drinking. Do it for me.
- 5:10In a young person's mind, you think, well, people always say
- 5:15that parents will do anything for you and this is anything.
- 5:19And I'd be confronted with the truth.
- 5:21She wouldn't do anything. She would do some things, but
- 5:24not anything. She drew the line when it came
- 5:27to her alcohol or I guess I should be more specific, her
- 5:31wine. When you learn that at a young
- 5:35age, you realize you need to figure out how you fit in, how
- 5:39you're going to get the love that you need, even if here or
- 5:43there, because a little goes a long way for a kid.
- 5:48I started finding it in friendships and then I started
- 5:51finding the same conditions. As long as I played by other
- 5:55people's rules, then I would get a little hit of love.
- 6:02And that's where the anxiousness came in.
- 6:05Knowing that it was always out of my control.
- 6:09I never knew when somebody was going to rescind it or give it.
- 6:13So I started trying to get good at understanding what made
- 6:17people love for me. I realized giving helped.
- 6:25What could I give? I was a child, so I gave my
- 6:28time. I gave my thoughts, my opinions.
- 6:33I did things for people. I pretended people didn't do
- 6:37things that were hurtful to me. I made people feel OK, OK with
- 6:42their choices. I did the best I could not to
- 6:45judge them. And if I did judge them, I would
- 6:49find ways to say that maybe I was wrong, maybe I didn't have
- 6:53all the facts. I would apologize when I didn't
- 6:57need to for things that I didn't do.
- 7:00And I guess I got in a groove, the people pleaser groove.
- 7:06I got hyper vigilant reading people, trying to understand
- 7:11what they were going to think, trying to figure out how to keep
- 7:14them happy or keep things status quo.
- 7:19And when things would upset me or irk me, I would just pretend
- 7:23it didn't happen. I would just out logic my
- 7:27feelings. Elizabeth Gilbert talked a lot
- 7:30about a lot of this, but she did it through anecdotes.
- 7:35She did it through the stories that she lived and the stories
- 7:39that she had to admit. When I think about my true
- 7:43nature, I realized that it's hard to know what that is.
- 7:48When for so long you gave to get, there was always a string
- 7:52attached. There was always a way to be let
- 7:55down. There was always a way to
- 7:58secretly resent somebody, hold a grudge.
- 8:03But then things started to change.
- 8:06I started to change. It didn't happen all of a sudden
- 8:10and it didn't happen years ago. It happened recently.
- 8:15I started reading BIOS. Oh my gosh.
- 8:18We would talk about how they were one way and how they would
- 8:20come out of it and then their life would change.
- 8:25Things would just get easier or better.
- 8:28They talked about how saying no helped them so much in their
- 8:31life get to what they wanted. They talked about how they used
- 8:36to give. And then they realized a lot of
- 8:39people, they're just takers. So the giving to get didn't
- 8:43work. I started seeing a lot of
- 8:46patterns, connecting a lot of dots, and I started realizing
- 8:50that we're all pretty similar. And for the people pleasers out
- 8:54there, we all operate very similarly.
- 8:58We just don't talk about it or admit it.
- 9:02And for those that do, it helps all of us.
- 9:06So I started realizing that maybe I need to look at who I'm
- 9:10giving to. Maybe I need to be more
- 9:12discerning, and maybe I need to start with giving to myself.
- 9:17I had an employee sit in front of me one day.
- 9:21It was a really random conversation and she just kept
- 9:25saying on repeat, give me grace, Give me grace.
- 9:30I didn't know what to say when she was saying that.
- 9:34She wouldn't explain why she was saying that.
- 9:38But now I get it. She needed time.
- 9:43She needed acceptance. She needed to feel like she
- 9:46wasn't failing. I wish I could have given her
- 9:50grace, but at the time I couldn't give myself grace.
- 9:54I held myself to such a high standard.
- 9:57I operated on such a different system than I do now.
- 10:01I had to loosen those reins because I couldn't hold on like
- 10:06that anymore. I used to ride horses, and when
- 10:11you ride English style, all you have is your reins.
- 10:14You don't have a horn like in Western, and you have to hold on
- 10:18so tight. At times I can feel myself
- 10:23gripping those reins wrapped around my hands as though I have
- 10:30control, when in reality you have a very strong horse
- 10:35underneath you and they can eventually do whatever they need
- 10:39to do if they feel the urge. But we try.
- 10:43We try really hard to control. And I decided to stop.
- 10:50I decided to let people do whatever they do.
- 10:53Show me who they are. Show me what matters to them.
- 10:58Show me where they want a relationship to go or not.
- 11:01Show me what they're willing to do or not.
- 11:05It really gets that easy when you loosen the reins.
- 11:10People tell you what matters to them if you listen.
- 11:14People tell you what they want if you care, and people show you
- 11:20if they value you. You just need to watch.
- 11:25Watch what they're doing or not doing.
- 11:28When I loosen the reins on my life, that's when I welcomed
- 11:33self respect. I stopped giving like I used to.
- 11:38I became so much more conservative in that front.
- 11:43I started watching what I talked about.
- 11:47I didn't waste my time gossiping anymore.
- 11:50I hate going in circles and conversations.
- 11:54I hate guessing what somebody was thinking.
- 11:57Nobody knows what somebody's thinking.
- 11:59Who cares? But I know why people care and I
- 12:02know why people do it. They do it because they need to
- 12:06make sense for themselves. But assuming is really not
- 12:11helpful. It's dangerous.
- 12:13Even I welcomed in self worth. I think that came after dating.
- 12:20I think it came by watching other people date too.
- 12:24I started seeing patterns in places I never thought I'd see
- 12:27it. Not only amongst men and women
- 12:31and that dynamic, but also amongst friends.
- 12:35I started seeing how friends would disregard one another,
- 12:39forget plans, not apologize, deflect when confronted.
- 12:45I saw so many things just happening right in front of me
- 12:50and I had to sit back and realize they were always
- 12:52happening. These things have always been
- 12:54happening, they just had to be seen and acknowledged.
- 13:01And then self respect. Once you have self worth, self
- 13:06respect is easy. You value your time differently.
- 13:10Instead of me giving it away all the time, I started realizing
- 13:14the value of time. Not just my time, everybody's
- 13:18time. I started realizing calls don't
- 13:21need to be this long. I used to think a great call was
- 13:25measured by how long the person stayed on the phone.
- 13:28Now I realize sometimes I just don't care to stay on the phone.
- 13:32And it doesn't mean that I like the person less.
- 13:35And if that person wants to get off the phone, it doesn't mean
- 13:37that they like me less. It just means our time is
- 13:41limited. And that's OK.
- 13:44It's better than OK. It means that when somebody
- 13:47calls you or when somebody chooses to show up for you, it's
- 13:50because they want to be there. At least that's how it should
- 13:54be. Then self love, my favorite of
- 13:59the selves. That's the part that makes it
- 14:02easy. When somebody doesn't respond to
- 14:05you, doesn't acknowledge you, and shows you that they don't
- 14:10care, makes it easy for you not to care.
- 14:14It makes it easy for you to see, but maybe you didn't want to see
- 14:17before, but maybe you were not able to see before because you
- 14:21kept blocking it, pretending that somebody was better than
- 14:25they were. And when I think about the
- 14:28question of what matters to you, first you have to know that you
- 14:32matter. And the only way you do is by
- 14:35figuring out what self worth is your worth, figuring out what
- 14:41self respect is, how to respect yourself, and figuring out what
- 14:46self love is. The art of loving yourself and
- 14:52then the question of what matters to you gets a lot simler
- 14:58when you acknowledge that you matter to you.
- 15:05Thanks for listening. These episodes are unscripted.
