Transcript
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome to another episode of The Well Unfiltered.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Seuss, with my favorite guest.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: Seems to be.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: We're the one I bounce things off of all the time.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: So it kind of makes sense.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: So I've I've wrangled you in today with no preempting other than just I have some questions.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: You're quite the surprise.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Quite the surprise.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So I want to discuss active recovery today, because I think a lot of people get that wrong.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Um, you have to be able to rest in order to make progression, but it can't be an all or nothing.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: It has to be strategic.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: So I want to talk about that.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: So before we talk about it, I kind of want to set the stage for anybody who's curious as to why this is timely for us in this season.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, five days ago, we were climbing a mountain.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Literally.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Crazy.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: So we were in Montchremblanc in Quebec, and we were attempting the 29029 Everesting.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: And that is where you climb the same mountain and gondola down until you reach the vertical feet of Everest, which is 29,029 feet.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: It's an incredibly amazing event.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: It is participate in?
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And the witness and it's yes.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: So just more background.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: There's 20 weeks of preparation in that.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: And through the 20 weeks, they take you through uh the or the training plan takes you through very high workloads with active recovery and all of the things down to your taper into the event.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: They also send out a final week after the event to tell you to sit down and take care of yourself, basically.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Because you've been full throttle, basically, for 20 weeks.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: You you did 36 hours.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Some of us did 36 hours on the mountain.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: And now your body is saying, I'm tired, but your brain is geared in towards gotta go, because that's where you've been focused for the last 20 weeks.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: So this is not a theory.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: This is something both of us are actively living out this week, a little differently, but living out, I think is fair to say.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: So I think what I want to preface with and what I want to take away from this is recovery isn't a pause between the work.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: It it actually is the work sometimes.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: And you have to be okay to do that and not feel as if you're going backwards in the wrong direction.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: So tell me, what does five days post-29029 feel like in your body right now?
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Um you know, we we've been whoop, this is not an endorsement, but it is an endorsement.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: We've been whoop wears for seven years now.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So it's been it has a lot of my data, a ton of my recovery data.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and when I look at since the event, because again, we're awake for you know, 20 plus hours, 24 hours.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I mean minimum.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Minimum.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And um and then and what that looked like the next day waking up at 1%.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And then and then what it's gotten to, and in about three days' time, my recovery's been good according to my what it measures.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Um yesterday I spent two hours with a massage therapist um getting into some really deep tissue work.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Um I I feel like there's a lot of me that's starting to feel recovered, but you're right about the brain part of it.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: It's it's like when like it's every day there was a ton to do, especially for the last five or six weeks.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: You're you're really amped up to getting you ready for the event.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Um, I still can't feel my big toes um because they took a beating.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: And um so there's physically and mentally are different for me.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: I think for the major for the most part, I'd say physically, I'm probably 80 to 85 percent feeling recovered every five days.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: But mentally, I'm I'm ready to get back to work.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: You know, I said one of the hardest things for me was not having any weight training.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: It's a big shift for me to go from lifting a weight to endurance training.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: My body's not built for that specifically.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Um I'm I'm anxious to get get back to that in the gym and put myself under some physical duress on purpose.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Um, but I also there's parts of me, specifically my feet, that still need some time.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I I really when I went to bed last night, my idea was I'm gonna get up and go ruck tomorrow morning.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Like it was really on my brain.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: And when I got into bed, I'm like, I still can't feel my toes.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's not a good idea.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: So I had been through the massage yesterday, and when I you know left that, I really felt good.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Like she did a really good job of of helping me with that.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So I think that still listening to my recovery based on what I feel like's not ready, like it's not gonna hurt my big toes to go lift some weights tonight.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but if I'd have thrown around a 40-pound rug vest and rug for 45 minutes, your feet would be high.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I think my toes would have been like, What are you doing, dude?
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Um but uh again, it's that mental battle.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: It's the I have been let's go, let's go, let's go, you know, and I still step on the scale and go, Man, I'm four pounds lighter than I was, you know, before we left for the mountain.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And and then for a guy who's been weight training his whole life, like looking at the scale and going, I'm light is not a good thing.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: So um, so it's there's the mental aspect of it that I think I'm still going to.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So walk me through the last five days.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: What have you been doing, or on the flip of that, deliberately not doing?
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: So what I have been doing is watching my my hydration a lot.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I've been probably as hydrated as I've ever been.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, super hydrated.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: I'm drinking at least a gallon or more of water every day.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Um, the massage was very a thing, you know, that was that we needed to do.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Um and like the my food consumption, I mean, we do a I I would say we do a I'd say a better than average job of watching our diets anyway.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, the week uh leading up to then was super high carbohydrates, it was not not my normal stockpiling, you know.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And since I've gone back to what's quote unquote normal for me, which is a higher level of protein, um, you know, average carbohydrates.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And so that's been intentional to get back to that.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Um but intentionally not being on my feet.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Like I have been intentional about not like I said, I my idea was this morning I was going to go on a rug.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: And the intentionality of I was tired still, but I still I I had the had the energy, but I just like my my feet aren't ready.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: So there was an intentionality behind not sure but being on my feet.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Is there anything that your body has been feeling or asking for that surprised you?
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Things maybe you didn't expect to to be hearing from your body at this point?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's weird.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: I just mentioned it, but yesterday I got maybe it was Tuesday, Tuesday or Wednesday, like either Tuesday or Wednesday this week.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Today's Thursday for reference.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So I could have eaten a loaf of bread.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Like I just wanted some type of high carbohydrate food.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Because again, I've switched, I've moved back to way more protein during the day.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: And when I say way more, it's two to two hundred and fifty grams of protein every single day, which doesn't need a lot of space for carbohydrates.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Like if you're gonna watch total mic total macros.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And so but I was craving something.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, just some type of carb.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: I didn't I didn't care.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: I'd have eaten a box of Pop Tarts, I'd have I mean it it didn't matter to me.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: So I think there's been a physical craving for I don't know if it's the sweets, because you eat so many sweets.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: You do you get sweet fatigue bad over the course of the event.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: You know, so you get to the point where you don't want another one, you know, your body's tired of eating them, um, but it's the quickest place you can get energy.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: So you do get sweet fatigue, and I think I've come away from that and go, okay, well, where's the sweets, bro?
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: You know, so that's probably the been the biggest thing.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, that's probably my biggest.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: So I think from from a clinical perspective, and this is something I don't know that people understand, so I'm gonna explain it as best I can.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: So what our bodies just went through was not just about like the muscular stress or the um skeletal stress.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: It was immune system, adrenal system, nervous system, gut function, big one, hormone regulation, all of that was on high alert the whole time.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: All of it took a hit, all of it's tired.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: So when people come off of these events, sometimes, a lot of times, they'll catch a cold or they'll, you know, catch the next bug that's coming through.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: And the reason is their body is depleted, it's tired, it's trying to do its job.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: And I think the other part that people miss is the fitness gains that you get through training, you don't get those post-event.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: There are no fitness gains to be had.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Your body's tired, it's just trying to recover and repair.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: So resting isn't putting you backwards.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: You're not walking yourself in a in the wrong direction.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Because if you continue to try and progress and move forward, all you're gonna do is continue that high cortisol load that came from the event, and that's gonna cause a lot of muscular breakdown, systemic breakdown, immune response, and all those kinds of things.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: So knowing that um, and saying that it's active recovery, are you feeling guilty right now, or are you feeling pretty at peace with it?
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's like I said, it's it is hard.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: And I want to go back to a moment on the mountain.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: There was a moment on the mountain where I had to like it, you don't ever walk back down the mountain, right?
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: You walk the goal is right.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: You walk up it and you gondola down.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: But we were, I don't know, maybe a couple hundred yards from the start line.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: It was ascent, I can't remember, it was four or five.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: I want to say it was like five.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: And I was having severe cramps.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, to the point that I couldn't walk.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, every step my legs would try to lock up, and knowing it wasn't a hydration issue.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And Patrick walked by, you know, and you and I were sitting there having this conversation, and he plainly put it out there what about going to the recovery tent?
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Which everybody goes, Don't go there because it sucks you in, you won't want to leave.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: But you know, going doing exactly that, which is so backwards to what I'm trying to achieve.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Like I knew, okay, well, I got probably 20 minute, 10 minute walk down right to get on the gondola.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: It's 12 minutes up, so that's 22 minutes.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: They're gonna work on me for 20 minutes if if I don't have to wait, because now I'm at 42, 40 minutes, and I got a 12 minute ride back now.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: I'm wasting an hour.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: And that was two-thirds of a hike for us because we were hiking at about an hour and a half percent, hour forty-five minutes percent.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I'm like, well, that's gonna put me a bit like really behind.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Um but what Patrick said was you know, Chris going backwards is not going backwards.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: You're gonna need that work to do anything because I couldn't walk anyway.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, we were having to like kind of pause and let you kind of reset.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Like it was it was bad.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And so and then I went to the recovery tent and watched that guy go into a full body cramp, which was crazy, different story.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: But when I left the bot left the the recovery place, I know that that 20 minutes or the hour total got me four more cents.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: I could not have done those four cents without pausing and making the decision to walk backwards down the mountain and to go, you know, I'm gonna put myself in the best place to do the best I can.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And so I keep going back to that.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Like I said this morning, I really, I really did want to get out of rock.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: It was a cool morning, 69 degrees, it was beautiful.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: And like this would be a great morning for it.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: But I don't think my body's ready yet.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And rather than pushing, I've you know, but yeah, there is a definite guilt thing in that because you've been so ready to go, ready to go, ready to go.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: And then all of a sudden it's like, okay, now pause.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: But I think, okay, well, on that ascent, we have been going, going, going, and my body goes, No, you gotta do something different.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: So I paused.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: And then the pause gave me more than I could have gotten otherwise.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So I keep trying to go back to that decision um without feeling super guilty.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: But I do know that tonight my feet are not gonna be involved in my weight training.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: So there'll be some weight training tonight.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: So the more is more we call it a fallacy.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: The more is more fallacy in performance culture.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: So in fitness, in business, um, wellness, all of that has people building identities around output versus results.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: And I think it's important to distinguish the two because it's like being busy but not productive kind of thing.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: So when you look at recovery in that mindset, recovery leads to weakness.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: But again, that's kind of a fallacy because recovery is actually what helps you make progression forward over time.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: I I think back, I think it was like training week, maybe 14.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to, I they've all run together at this point.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: We had really heavy, like one, two, three days, and then we had a complete rest day.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Like you do nothing.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: And that whole day I was feeling like, I'm what is missing in my day?
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: I'm missing something.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Like, what am I not doing that I need to be doing?
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Because that had become such an integrated part of every single day prior to that.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I found it really hard to to kind of what yes, it was really hard to kind of just check out and and and not want to do anything that day.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: So, what part of your your mental space right now is kind of feeling like um I need to be doing more than I'm doing?
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's just definitely a voice.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Um loud is that voice on a scale of one to ten.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Ten being like whisper and I mean, excuse me, one being a whisper, ten being is like right there in your ear screaming at you.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Where do you think that comes from?
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Um I think spending so much time in the body space.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Um we I go back to when we were competing, and you know one of the one of the things that Hanny and I had lots of conversation about was rest.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And he at the time he was training Dwayne Johnson, The Rock, and he said almost every conversation they had was not about training, it was about rest.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Because he wouldn't rest.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: And Dwayne said to him, I know this this candle I'm burning is only gonna burn for so long, so I gotta get it while I can.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Well, I think that bleeds over into almost everything.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: I think there's this idea of I've I've gotten myself to be as fit as I've been in a while.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: And if I'm if I'm missing a day, then I'm going backwards.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Like that's the it's a it's a again, a fallacy.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: But when you're used to just like the the and I'm gonna call it a grind, um then when you don't, you're like, okay, well I've I've I've taken a step backwards.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: And because I've only weight trained like two times the last six months, and I had this conversation the other day with somebody, like I grabbed dumbbells that would be like a third set warm-up and they got heavy by the third set.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, this is not good.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: But but I know all that'll come back.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, having spent time in the space, knowing how quickly some things can fade away.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: But if I'm just looking at my overall physical health, I know that that's I've got to listen to the the the one the 1.5.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just said it was an eight and a half, which means that there's one point five that's going, nope, don't do that.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: I've got to listen to the one point five.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: It's the that eight and a half is like go, go, go, go, go.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:30unknown: Yeah.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Do you feel like you're you've given your nervous system ample time to kind of downregulate from the the stress level of the event?
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: And while you're thinking of your answer, I just want to preface to everybody who's listening.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: So we took a break, um, went and took, I'm gonna say very uh a very light nap.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: It was not deep sleep, but it's it's almost impossible for your body to go to sleep after having been at that high level for so long.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: And it was roughly at the 24-hour mark, give or take for us.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: So we had been going for that long, and you would think you would be exhausted, and your body would very quickly fall into sleep, and that is not true because your nervous system is still like wide open.
- 18:13unknown: Yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: I think what I have seen is you know, it's really easy for me to fall asleep.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Like if you look at according to my Whoop data, like it's from the time I hit his depillow to the time that I'm asleep is about two minutes.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Um, it's been harder for me to to get into a window mode.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: So I think that's and I think that's part of it.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: I I think there is still some you know some nervous system activity.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: So I I would I would say I I mean I'm getting better.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, last night I fell asleep pretty quick.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Um was that day three?
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: So I think I'm getting there.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: I would say i i if I continue down this path, I think by Sunday, which would be about a seven days beyond it, I think I'll be back into my normal routines.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: What I did notice this morning was that my sleep patterns last night were the most regular they've been.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: So I think I'm getting close to being there.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Because like my sleep patterns Sunday night, Monday night, and even Tuesday night were not my normal sleep patterns at all.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was super dysregulated, lots of waking events and all that.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Last night I had one waking event, so way better.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Good, good.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: So right now you're in full rest and I'm I'm not.
- 19:32unknown: Right.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: So just as a preface, that's not reckless, it's actually intentional because I'm going back out and doing that madness all over again.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Um in four weeks.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: In four weeks, yeah.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Four weeks from today is when I will be checking in and gearing up and yeah, let's go.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Um so Whistler is roughly four weeks out.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Um, so I've been in very like intentional, like do nothing mode to let my nervous system kind of settle because I've had a I've had a really hard time with recovery.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: I have still not hit a green recovery.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: I've not even really hit a high yellow yet, um, which is frustrating, but that's a whole different conversation.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: But yesterday was the first day that I had actually done anything, intentionally done anything.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, obviously we're on our feet, we're doing, you know, life, whatever.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: But um, I went and did, and I'm gonna say very light walk yesterday afternoon just to kind of test the waters, more to see if my brain was going to check out on me than if my body was ready.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: Because I think that that's where my gap is right now.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: It went fine.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Um, what is it, what is it gonna look like?
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: And you can't really say because you're not there yet, but what do you think it's gonna look like helping me to navigate these next four weeks?
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Because in the training plan for Whistler, this Saturday should be a seven-hour day.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Now, doing that seven hours on my part would be incredibly foolish and reckless.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: But what do you anticipate being your I don't want to say struggle, but frustration maybe, or I don't know, I don't know what word to use in in being on the other side of your event and then seeing that I've still got one to go.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Um I mean to some degree to be it, like a little bit of fear of missing out.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: There'll be there'll be some of that.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: You're volunteering, so you'll be there.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: You'll be there.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna volunteer and help the people that are on the mountain, which we did last year at Montreblant.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: It was amazing, it was so much fun.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Whistlers make the event, by the way.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, volunteers make the event.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's they they just so fun.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: It's so good.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: So fun.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: Um so I think that'll be my that'll be my saving grace is knowing that I'll be out there with purpose.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Um but but watching you being training, because there's gonna be there's gonna be a long training.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: There'll be two of them.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: So um and we have been doing a lot of those side by side.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: You know, and not doing it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't I'm not gonna ask you to get out and do it.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: I I am not gonna ask that of you.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: I'm ready to train my body in a much different way.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Um so I I I think that that will be the the the fear of the I would say I'll call it FOMO, a little bit of like I'm what am I gonna be missing out on?
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Especially since I didn't finish.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: You know, I think if if we had gotten a red hat, I'd come into that way different.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: I would come in feeling accomplished and like okay, I've I've got one under my belt.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: And at this point, I feel good that you'll be able to.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Avery has now have two of them, right?
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: And I'm the one who started this madness, and I don't have one yet.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: So there's a little bit of that there too.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: So if someone is listening right now, maybe not an endurance athlete, maybe not an athlete of any kind, but just somebody who's been pushing really hard through life and hasn't stopped, what would you say to them right now from where you sit right now after having five days of actual rest and recovery from something hard?
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Man, that's a good question.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: So I I think that I would I think it would have to be a m a a measured result.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: I think you'd have to, and what I mean by that is do the hard thing, which is rest, and then measure the results after.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Because I I think that's what you and I have been again, we've done this multiple times.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: We've been in the physique space a lot.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: And we know the importance of rest because we have been able to measure the importance of rest.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: We've been able to measure the rebound, right?
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: And the results like a a dead cat bounce, right?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: It's like you you the the gain to come from taking a a a breather is so big.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: And and we've seen it happen.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: So the the advice I'd give was it would be that would be like take a breather, pay attention.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Like, how does your body feel?
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: How are you sleeping?
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Like i do you have a ton of brain fog?
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: That's that's a that's a real thing.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Because I can tell you, like Sunday, even driving to the airport Sunday, like it was my my brain didn't want to function correctly.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And I mean and I'm the one driving, but I I just didn't it didn't feel right.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: And so and I and I'd say coming into Monday at work, it probably was not at its highest level.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Tuesday I kind of felt better about that.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: But just recognize and and take an inventory like how am I feeling mentally?
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: How am I sleeping?
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Like what what's hurt?
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: What's because you know, one of the decisions I made was to not do another ascent with Avery.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: And I said it then, you know, I was making the decision, do I need to go from hurt to injured?
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: Because there's a difference between being hurt and then being injured.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Injury requires some intervention.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Some intervention.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: And hurt is oh, I'll get over it.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Um and I made the decision to to just live and hurt and not and not risk injury.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: So I think recognizing, hey, what hurts?
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And and and and I think taking that inventory and then being actively engaged every day of taking that inventory until they feel like, okay, well, now I feel like I'm ready to go again.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: I'm sleeping good, I'm like I'm all the things are sitting in the right spot.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: And then give yourself a month and go, could I have been here if I hadn't done that?
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Like just look at look at the gain.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Like whatever that gain is, whether it's a a timed mile or uh, you know, how you're how you're lifting weights and the what the amount of weight you're lifting, whatever, whatever your sport is, like look at how you're performing after giving yourself a reset.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: So I sent an email out to my list Tuesday, I believe.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: My days are running together this week still.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: I'm not like I don't I know what day of the week it is, but I can't remember what day I did things.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Brain fog.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: And one of the points that I made in there was doing doing Montreblant and then going to Whistler right after kind of mirrors how life treats you sometimes because you'll just come out of a hard thing and you go right back into a hard thing because life doesn't always give you the space in between to catch your breath.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: But the point of knowing that and understanding that and applying that is that your your tolerance to hard gets better.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: And it's not that the heart is any less hard, it's just your response to it, your body's reaction, your mental reaction to it is not as extreme.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: And that's not that you go numb.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: It's not really that.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: It's just that the more you are exposed to hard things, the less, the less your body is going to freak out and ramp up and do all of those things.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: But when you do get to a point where they're just kind of coming one after the other after the other, you do have to make that hard choice of saying, okay, I'm gonna sit this one out.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Because the recovery process that is required and needed is required and needed.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Because if you ignore it long enough, your body is gonna not let you do those hard things anymore.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: So you can look at it in terms of I want to do these hard things now and do as many as I can, or I want to do them for as long as possible.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: You have to make that decision.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: And if you're not really engaging in that recovery process and that rest process, your body's gonna make that choice for you.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: And active recovery, just for anybody who's listening, does not mean being a couch potato, eating all of the desserts and just not caring.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: That's not at all what we mean with that.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Active recovery can mean just get out and walk around your yard for 15 minutes after dinner.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: It can it can mean, you know, putting your feet up and taking relaxing things, but not just disregarding all the things that you know.
- 28:28unknown: Right.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: So it's you know choosing the long game.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: For as long as possible.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: So if this resonates, if if you feel like we're crazy, it's okay if you tell us we already know it.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: We don't hide it.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: But if it resonates with you and you've got more questions, please reach out.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: We'd love to be of service to you.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Until next time,
