- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Steep Stuff Podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, james Lauriello, and today we've got a really fun episode for you guys.
- 0:06Speaker 1: None other than Colorado Springs local crusher, emily Schwert, joins the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The Speedgoat 2024 Speedgoat 21K champion comes on to talk all about her race back in July at the Speedgoat Mountain Races.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We also talk a lot about her 2024 schedule and plans for her upcoming marathon at CIM, training for past marathons and just kind of balancing that life between a sub ultra runner and a marathon runner, which is not an easy one.
- 0:33Speaker 1: We talk all as well, all about her crewing experiences, specifically this year at Western States and Javelina.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It's just a really fun episode.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We get into all kinds of fun stuff.
- 0:42Speaker 1: In addition, emily is a PT, a local Colorado Springs PT, so we talk a little bit about PT and what she does for her practices and stuff like that.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It's just a great episode, really fun.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Get to learn a little bit more about her and we get some hot takes as well.
- 0:58Speaker 1: So it's a fun episode.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Guys, without further ado, I hope you guys enjoy this one Miss Emily Schwert Time.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, we are live.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Welcome to the podcast, thank you we're live now.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's Emily, and the last name Schwert Schwert.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that's correct, easy enough.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Very German.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Very German.
- 2:18Speaker 1: That's Adam's last name, right yeah?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Supposedly it means sword, I don't know.
- 2:22Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought he was making that up, and then I had a patient who was german and she was like no, that's really what it means.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I was like okay interesting welcome to the podcast.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Uh, let's let's do like an intro introduce yourself, talk a little bit about your background, what you do for a living and you're running as well, and we'll go from there yeah, I have been running for a really long time.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I ran in high school and college Ran at a small Division II school in St Louis 5K, 10k.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Even though I hated the 10K, it was what I was good at.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So my coach said you're doing it?
- 2:57Speaker 2: Not a whole lot of trails in St Louis, but there were some and our coach was really pretty intentional of taking us for long runs on the trails to help reduce injury.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You know, get off the pavement, um, and then we moved here.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I did a lot of road running and then we moved here in 2020, um, right before COVID, literally 15 days before the world shut down.
- 3:22Speaker 1: It.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Wow, great timing.
- 3:23Speaker 1: It was like March timeframe yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 2: March, like 13th or something, wow and fell in love with the trails.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I still do a little bit of both road and trail stuff, but it's hard to not want to be out in the mountains all day when you live here.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Beautiful place.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So yeah, and I'm a physical therapist by trade.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I kind of specialize in the female athlete and especially I do pelvic floor PT.
- 3:46Speaker 2: So talk about a lot about vaginas and vulvas all day and I am not afraid to have any sort of conversation about that.
- 3:54Speaker 1: My husband sometimes is like whoa we're like a lot of information and I'm like, hey, everybody should know.
- 4:00Speaker 2: So, yeah, it's a passion and yeah, it mixes really well with running, especially my husband's a pt as well, so we can try to help each other out yeah, what is?
- 4:12Speaker 1: what a cool thing.
- 4:13Speaker 1: It's so weird, like not weird.
- 4:14Speaker 1: It's interesting because like I um, I kind of my first pt that I ever hung out with was sean river, yeah, and then he introduces me to your husband, adam.
- 4:22Speaker 1: We, I think I met him on a run and then like I realized like there's this whole world of PTs in Colorado Springs.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Everybody knows everybody.
- 4:28Speaker 1: There's so many PTs in.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Colorado Springs and everybody knows everybody.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and it's nice that I don't know the patient clientele is so different here than it was in Missouri, in a good way in a very refreshing way.
- 4:41Speaker 2: A lot of runners, I would way um a lot of runners, a lot of runners which is what I love to work with again, especially like, uh, female runners, and so it's um, yeah, it's a good place to be for a physical therapist yeah, no, definitely, definitely not a bad place.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah, um, yeah.
- 4:59Speaker 1: So you came onto the scene for me really this year you had like a very dominant, like seriously dominant win at the speed go mountain races, 21k.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, we gotta get her on the podcast.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I like messaged sean.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I was like do you know?
- 5:12Speaker 1: And he goes yes, I know her.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And I'm like I'm starting to put, and then I'm like, oh, that's adam's wife okay, and I start to put together all the pieces.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, oh, we gotta get her on the podcast, yeah, yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Well, first of all, congrats, thank you.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I just I'd last year was not a good year for me.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I like dislocated my shoulder and had some like back injuries and stuff, and so this is the first year in a while that I've been racing a little more consistently again, so it was fun.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And I'm really good friends with Jenny and she and her husband were going to do the 50 K and I was not about to do the 50 K, and so I was like, oh look, there's like some shorter races, let's pick one of those instead.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And it was a blast.
- 5:54Speaker 2: It was an absolute blast.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Would you like?
- 5:56Speaker 1: What'd you think outside of that, like?
- 5:57Speaker 1: What'd you think of the course?
- 5:58Speaker 1: What'd you think, like I?
- 6:00Speaker 2: absolutely loved it.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I thought it had all the best parts of the 50k without the distance.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It was a steep climb but I found it very runnable.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You know you're going to hike some of it but it was pretty runnable and nice, not crazy steep downhill, like very good terrain to run downhill A little bit of single track, a lot of Jeep road.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I really, and you, you know you pop out on top and it's just beautiful yeah um is it like summit baldy?
- 6:28Speaker 1: no, I think the 26k might okay the 21k just goes to the hidden peak yeah, which that aid station still 11 000 feet?
- 6:42Speaker 2: yeah, yeah, yeah yeah um yeah, it was one of those you know utmb races that now has like a hundred different race distances in one weekend yeah, I mean I was so excited so it was just nice.
- 6:54Speaker 1: It's like it's nice to talk to someone about that race, because when it popped onto the scene I was like oh, yeah like it's an additional course yeah but it's.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It seems like much different than the 28k, which seems like it's got a lot of.
- 7:05Speaker 1: It's a little bit more contrived, yeah, whereas the 21k I felt like was more of a natural course three to five thousand feet of vertical and just made a little bit more sense maybe yes, I, yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 2: That's why I signed up for that.
- 7:17Speaker 2: That and I was like I'd rather race on the same day as them and then on a different day.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, it was like, oh yeah, very natural, like climb, like a very nice, like climb descent, you know um is it your first time in little cottonwood?
- 7:29Speaker 2: No, I've taken a couple continuing education courses out there so I haven't raced out there, but I've ran like the altar brighton loop, um, like dog, dog, lake dog, something I don't know.
- 7:43Speaker 2: It's beautiful out there.
- 7:44Speaker 1: So I was.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I was also like I want to go back out beautiful out there, so I was.
- 7:45Speaker 2: I was also like I want to go back out there and race, so yeah, yeah, I was blown away.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I um, I just got back from I did it like a back-to-back.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I did cirque series, alta, and the following weekend I did um targi, but alta was that was my favorite course and that's why I was like, oh, maybe next year I'll go do snowbird or something like.
- 8:01Speaker 1: There's that little area, um, with the exception of bright.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I thought brighton was like nasty, technical, um, but that area is gorgeous and just amazing.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, you should check out the speed goat yeah, it was I highly recommend.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I really enjoyed it the older I get, the less I'm like.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't think 50k is a really oh no, no, I mean like oh, no, no, 21 or 28 yeah, well, that's what I was saying, like I think that would make sense because, like, oh, my god, this past weekend I did, uh, back-to-back long runs, like I'm starting to like kind of build for maybe a half marathon.
- 8:33Speaker 1: That I'm looking at and I'm like, oh, 30 miles in two days hurts.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It's like why do I do this to myself, say I'm much, much, a little more partial to like the.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So your background, so so your background.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You said it was like 5k, 10k.
- 8:46Speaker 1: What was your college experience like?
- 8:48Speaker 2: Oh, it was amazing.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Um, I went to a small program.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Um, our coach I had to run for five years cause I red shirt for a year.
- 8:55Speaker 2: We had a lot of people go like the PT track.
- 8:59Speaker 2: It was a freshman entry doctorate program at my school.
- 9:01Speaker 2: So I went to the same school for six and a half years doctorate program at my school.
- 9:05Speaker 2: So I went to the same school for six and a half years, graduated half a semester early with our program.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Um, and he had had a lot of people go through that track and so he kind of knew like, oh, this is a really hard semester, maybe you should redshirt this and like take advantage of this as an easier semester for you to like be traveling, competing a lot.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Um, so that was really amazing and I got scholarship for five years.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So that's always a bonus especially when you're in grad school, um, but yeah, it was awesome.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Just a small, small school.
- 9:30Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I actually like have bumped into a lot of people that I raced against, um, one of my good friends now, jamie adkins.
- 9:40Speaker 2: She ran at like university of southern Southern Indiana and we raced against them a lot.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I don't know her super well, but Jessica I'm going to butcher her last name but she's a really good roadrunner.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Lives here in the Springs now she went to University of Wisconsin Parkside.
- 9:55Speaker 2: It feels like small world, that's interesting.
- 9:59Speaker 2: We were in a pretty competitive conference in regional, which was also nice because D2 is fun in the sense that insanely competitive yeah, it's surprisingly competitive in a way that I don't know.
- 10:12Speaker 2: My coach was also awesome that he was like you're gonna be a physical therapist, you're probably not gonna be a pro marathoner, so like let's try and keep a really healthy balance.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Um, and we had just a really good culture on the team, like very healthy culture, which was good, because sometimes you don't always get that in college.
- 10:27Speaker 1: So, yeah, yeah, it's interesting.
- 10:29Speaker 2: You're like one of the few people because I I've spoken to so many, uh, track and cross-country athletes that are like, oh yeah, my college experience sucked yeah, it was terrible, yeah, no, I feel really lucky, like um it was, it was an awesome time and especially I was like okay in high school, but went to a really small high school, so it wasn't hard to be like pretty good.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And then the jump to college was vast.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I think I ran 15 miles a week in high school.
- 10:55Speaker 2: What, yeah, never did workouts Like.
- 11:00Speaker 2: We just went for like three, four mile runs.
- 11:02Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 11:04Speaker 2: So the jump to college was hard.
- 11:05Speaker 2: But my coach was also amazing in that like he really had it like long-term planned, like you weren't gonna burn out your freshman year, you were gonna gradually build.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And, yeah, my fourth and fifth year of my best years there.
- 11:17Speaker 1: So what a difference like a good coach makes yes so interesting yes because, like I feel like if you get a coach that's just gonna like grind you, you guys, into moon dust, then it's just not.
- 11:25Speaker 1: It just people don't respond.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I mean, I think people either respond to one of two ways they either respond well to it and then hate running and totally stop after they get out of college, or they quit then and then take up trail running later on Exactly, yeah, it's.
- 11:43Speaker 2: It's interesting because you know you become friends with a lot of people, even just from different schools or in your conference or whatever, and to see who's still running and who's not, and like where they went to school is a little telling, it is very, it is interesting.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I had, um, oh my gosh, I've had people everything from like all americans and like at the university of colorado.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Yeah, um, like all the way down to like d2 and it's just, it's just.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Or d3, it's just interesting.
- 12:05Speaker 1: You know it's crazy yeah um, do you still do a lot of 5k, 10k stuff for me, like road stuff, because I know adam does yeah yeah, yeah, that's, I'm trying to get him on the trails.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Okay, trying well did you guys?
- 12:18Speaker 1: You guys just did up and over, right yeah that was his first official trail race.
- 12:23Speaker 2: What'd you think?
- 12:23Speaker 2: I really enjoyed it.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I mean man, you want something that hurts the whole time.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Trail 10K.
- 12:29Speaker 1: It's like a Cirque series race.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 2: That hurt really bad, but it was a good time.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I loved it.
- 12:36Speaker 2: It's such a cool small race that has a really great environment around it.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Also, highly recommend that one.
- 12:44Speaker 2: But yeah, I do a mix.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I'm actually now starting a bill for a road marathon, so I, I like both, so I still, I just like to go fast.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, I love it, sometimes can't do on a trail.
- 12:56Speaker 2: You can but can't do on a trail Sometimes.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's funny, I'm like a huge student of the game.
- 13:02Speaker 1: So, even though I have coaches, I'm like always thinking like in terms of like specificity to non-specificity, and like trying to figure out what I'm going to do with my off season and this, that and the other, and I'm like you know what, like I'm finally going to buckle down and do a row 10K block and just see what we can do for the off season, Just just for some fun.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's, it's.
- 13:22Speaker 2: It's fun.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I found um, I'll usually do a couple like short little 5ks, like in the springtime or something um boulder actually does like a community series track race, where each I think they do two or three and each of them are have a couple different distances, but you're just seated based on your time.
- 13:40Speaker 2: So, like once my 5k was, like me, a couple of women my age, from denver, a couple like 60 year old guys and a couple like 18 year old boys like all in one race.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Um, it makes it kind of fun.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Uh, adam's actually trying to start something like that here in the spring should.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I would do that yeah, so working on that, um, and I just find that's fun, I don't know if you look at you know like you look at someone like Grayson Murphy like the speed stuff has its place to help you A hundred percent.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Especially short trail stuff in my opinion.
- 14:12Speaker 1: The best advice I ever got from Grayson was if you want to get really good at these Cirque Series races or running just uphill in general and being fast like the ultimate thing is obviously strength in the legs, yeah, you can get that through cycling, get that through weights, stuff like that, whatever, but get really fast in the 10k.
- 14:28Speaker 1: That was the best advice you know.
- 14:30Speaker 1: yeah, I was like that's yeah there's no, like you can train, because I have a lot of friends that train very specific and get like very into the specificity and I've fallen into that trap.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But I feel like with the specificity you almost get um, you kind of like uh, plateau yourself in a lot of ways, whereas like there's a lot of other places to get ginormous amounts of fitness yeah, you know, yeah, so for sure, yeah, that's a hard, that's hard to find 10ks though.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, like there aren't many there's not.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I was looking out.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I want to do like a flatlander one, like a florida or something.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yes, exactly yeah that's I want to do.
- 15:04Speaker 2: I've only ever done one half.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I jumped to marathons, which was dumb like.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Do some halves first so tough on the body.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah, um, but there I just.
- 15:12Speaker 2: If I'm gonna do another half, I did one down in pueblo.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I do not recommend no, do not recommend um, I want to do one, yeah, like hou, like Houston or something like that.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Like really take advantage of the altitude of what we're at and yeah, um no, you ran.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I saw on your Instagram you had done like Boston before, right, and a lot of that like the marathon.
- 15:34Speaker 1: What was that experience?
- 15:35Speaker 2: Um well, I was supposed to do Boston in 2020 and then 2020 happened.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Um, so I did.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Virtual.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Don't recommend that either.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Terrible idea, especially when you don't really train for it and you're just like, ah, I can run a marathon, you can, it's not going to feel very good.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Not going to be pretty.
- 15:54Speaker 2: And then, yeah, I requalified.
- 15:56Speaker 2: So two years ago I ran CIM that's what I'm training for again this year Really wanted to break three.
- 16:02Speaker 2: I again this year really wanted to break three.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I ran 302 um, so that's the goal this year.
- 16:10Speaker 2: So I re-qualified and then um was sort of ran boston.
- 16:12Speaker 2: This year I unfortunately had to drop it like 18 and a half with some heat yeah symptoms um my hands and face were like numb and tingly, which is not a good sign.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh, yeah it yeah Like a hot, super hot day, or that was the sad thing.
- 16:26Speaker 2: No, not that hot, but when you're starting to look for water in mile one, that's probably not a good sign.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Boston is set up in a really strange way where you have to get on the bus and bus to the start line and you get on the bus almost three hours before the race starts.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think my wave went off at like 1020 and I got on the bus at 730 and it's now our bus ride to the start and then you just sit in this like open environment, like parking lot.
- 16:55Speaker 1: That's same.
- 16:56Speaker 2: And then you walk almost a mile to the start line.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Do they like?
- 16:59Speaker 1: They don't hand out like drinks or have anything like that.
- 17:01Speaker 2: There's some water there, but also there's like not a ton of porter potty so yeah, I listen.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I know you're like walking that?
- 17:08Speaker 2: for me I was like walking that line.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, I've got my water bottle, but like I don't want to have to go like three miles into the race or something.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I didn't drink enough.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Um.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But yeah, it was like I don't know in the 70s not crazy hot, but was not here hot here at all in the spring so I think just the they'll do to the change.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah, so should have done some sauna training or something, but I didn't think it was gonna be that bad.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was unfortunate, but um, I don't know, this is probably not a great a hot take that most people might not agree with.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I think boston's a little overhyped I've heard.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I feel the same way I yeah, I was not impressed.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I felt like it was very culty yeah and I've heard like chicago's dope, yeah, like there's some other.
- 17:56Speaker 2: New york is really cool yeah, boston, and like you, literally start in the middle of nowhere.
- 18:00Speaker 2: You're in this tiny town yeah by the time I drafted 18, still not in the city.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Couldn't even see the city.
- 18:06Speaker 1: In the suburbs.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Literally, you're in the suburbs, somebody's neighborhood You're running through a neighborhood for miles and there are a lot of people out, so that's nice yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 2: But, you're like I don't know I don't get the hype, it was not what I was expecting, Not yeah.
- 18:21Speaker 1: It's like the same thing, you know, and this is a hot take as well, even though I'm super excited that David Roche finally cracked the course record on it.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I feel the same way about Leadville.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I'm like it's cool, it's a cool runnable race, it's dope, it's 100 miles, but now that, now that, like all the influencers do it, I'm like what's all the hype about.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I don't get it.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yeah Well, we we crewed a friend last year, daniel uh, last year, and I was not impressed Like I was, just like I don't know.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I've crewed friends for a couple of different races now and yeah, like, yeah, I love Leadville, don't get me wrong, I love.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Leadville.
- 18:57Speaker 2: But yeah, I was like it's like these.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I almost feel like these races.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I don't, and I don't feel this way about UTMB, just because UTMB seems like a party and it seems like a just like, almost like a, just a giant thing for our sport in a lot of ways.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Um and that, like I don't know if you've seen videos like this year it's the first time I've actually seen most controversial take.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Is it going too far the other way, whoa?
- 19:20Speaker 1: I was like dude.
- 19:21Speaker 1: There's like fires on the field.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I just there's like 2000 people in the race.
- 19:25Speaker 2: That's insane, that's crazy.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Right On a trail.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Right, oh, it's the Alps man.
- 19:29Speaker 1: They get away with it without the we, you know, and that's when and I guess in a hundred mile, you know, it spreads out start line and I was like whoa, is this like a yeah, yeah against people?
- 19:44Speaker 1: Yeah, people start out, especially in the front.
- 19:45Speaker 1: They're starting at like low six minute, high, five minute pace and it's like what are you guys doing?
- 19:48Speaker 1: You know, and especially this year I thought it was kind of funny because it was a hot year and like literally like all the elite men dropped in the front of the race every time I checked an update it was like oh, oh, that person dropped.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Oh, oh, that person dropped.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Like yeah I was.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I was really upset.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I was like jim, what are you doing?
- 20:04Speaker 1: Like what?
- 20:05Speaker 1: You're gonna build a nine minute lead to get chased by all these dudes and then drop in cormier I don't know.
- 20:11Speaker 2: You know, he can say he went for it.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true, that's true, yeah yeah, I was really hoping he was gonna be the one, but you know what?
- 20:17Speaker 1: The ladies race, the women's race, was just so much better to watch, like Katie Scheid's a boss.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I want to see her and Courtney race so bad.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I literally just so.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Finn Melanson shout out to the Single Track Podcast.
- 20:29Speaker 1: They're getting ready to do like a UTMB recap.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and he was calling for like hot takes and this and that.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 1: And that was exactly what I said to him.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I I was like when are we going to get a courtney?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Katie shied rematch because, like the last, time my race was about western states two years ago yeah, and I think katie has really leveled up like katie's on another level now.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, like it was and like the confidence that she ran utmb with, like going out I mean she was running with jim in the beginning of the race, what the hell?
- 20:58Speaker 2: yeah, well, I think the the uh guy who won.
- 21:02Speaker 2: I'm gonna I don't remember his name, yeah, which very cool for him, um, but he said at one point katie was in front of him yeah, oh yeah like, probably not for very long, but like she could have won the race.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, it's definitely with the exception of katie who I just think, like I said, had just reached another level.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I think it's just a patient person's race.
- 21:20Speaker 1: You got to take that first half really easy and the second half just like really.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I mean like look at Ruth Croft.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, she just moved and like at the end, was moving when nobody else was, and she was getting.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I wouldn't say like haters, but like there were people on the live strat like where is?
- 21:36Speaker 2: Ruth Croft.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and look at that, she passed Marion.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Yeah, she did.
- 21:40Speaker 1: She passed Marion, hogan and Blondine.
- 21:41Speaker 1: So yeah, the women's race, in my opinion, was just like way more fun to follow.
- 21:44Speaker 1: This year the men's race for the women's race completely fell apart and I was like guys, what are we doing here?
- 21:49Speaker 1: Eventually we'll learn.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Maybe the heat and I think a lot of these, I think fueling and maybe you can attest to this as well think the um, it's like 100 to 120 grams of carbs per hour with that heat through the night.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Yeah, might not be working yeah, yeah, I, I don't know well, and I think a lot of people are like this is the new thing, right?
- 22:09Speaker 2: So they're trying to do it and it's not something that you can just do.
- 22:13Speaker 2: No, like, if you want to do something like that, it takes a lot of time and like training your stomach, yeah, and yeah it's, it doesn't always work out.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Um, yeah, it was what I was going to say.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Way too, because I knew you were at Western States this year and you got to follow Lauren's.
- 22:29Speaker 1: What was that like?
- 22:30Speaker 1: How was that?
- 22:31Speaker 1: Oh?
- 22:31Speaker 2: my gosh, I Western was so cool.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I mean, the amount of people that are out there like it's incredible.
- 22:38Speaker 2: And we actually got to work really closely with um lauren, what had a sponsorship with precision, so we had a precision person with us the whole time too.
- 22:46Speaker 2: That was just like tabulating all the things that she was eating and drinking and she's like save everything, don't throw anything away.
- 22:52Speaker 2: We're like, okay, um, and so, yeah, like just seeing what goes into that side of it is really interesting.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I think there there is a lot of you know so much science that I don't understand.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think that's where I think there's gains that could be made from that.
- 23:08Speaker 2: But then also, yeah, like you can't just do it on your own.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, let's just take all this, yeah.
- 23:15Speaker 2: But yeah, western in particular was amazing.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Katie looked incredible the whole time, like she was just smiling, cool, calm and collected.
- 23:22Speaker 2: But yeah, it was an awesome experience.
- 23:24Speaker 2: It was a little scary at one point because there was a fire.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yes, I forgot about that.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and so we had been planning on.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Lauren had three pacers.
- 23:35Speaker 2: I was only going to pace her last six miles and so I was going to right before Rucky chucky and we were going to crew her, just crew her, and then she was going to change pacers at green gate after rucky chucky.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Um, as we're on our way there, her pacer from green gate was like we can't, like the road's closed, we don't know, we think there's a fire.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Like we don't know what's going on, like you might need to run like 18 miles with her.
- 24:00Speaker 2: And I was like, ok, it's like heat of the day.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I have not been prepping to run 18 miles, but we got down.
- 24:08Speaker 2: They did get down to Rucky Chucky.
- 24:10Speaker 2: There was only one van that was operating at that time that could take like 12 people at a time.
- 24:14Speaker 2: So we got really lucky.
- 24:16Speaker 2: We got down to Rucky Chucky and we traded out packs.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Her current pacer was like I can go, I can keep going.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I was like you're not running 30 miles.
- 24:24Speaker 1: That's a long way.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I will pace.
- 24:26Speaker 2: We switched Somehow.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Holly and Brad Lauren's husband, brad, sweet-talked the cop.
- 24:35Speaker 2: They found an alternate route.
- 24:37Speaker 2: They were the only people there besides aid station workers.
- 24:39Speaker 2: They were like we're ready, like holly was like I'm ready to go and I was like thank goodness, yep, you can take her, I'll go pick her up the last six miles, um, but that was kind of crazy, like a lot of people had to change their pacing and like um, another guy I know ended up pacing like 31 miles because they couldn't get anybody well, I know dylan dylan was having a heart attack on the live stream over it like he's freaking out there was no information, like even the van driver.
- 25:06Speaker 2: We were like what's happening?
- 25:07Speaker 2: He's like I have no idea, like because at one point we were told we weren't going to be able to get there and we're like, okay, if she's not going to have any crew at all for 30 miles yeah that's really not good for any runner no, well, that's yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And that leads to the other question.
- 25:21Speaker 1: It's like what happened to that point?
- 25:22Speaker 1: Did they just call the race, and so we were hearing?
- 25:25Speaker 2: rumors that they were going to like call the race, and that was when, like, jim was trading back and forth with Rod, like right by the river, the trauma Right.
- 25:33Speaker 2: And we were like, wait, it can't end now.
- 25:35Speaker 2: But it ended up not being an issue.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Like right after we came out of Greengate they like opened it back up.
- 25:43Speaker 2: So I don't really know what happened there, but that was a little.
- 25:46Speaker 1: A little extra drama.
- 25:47Speaker 1: A little extra drama and it was funny.
- 25:50Speaker 2: The precision person who was with us didn't know any of us and I must have been kind of panicking because she looked at the other girl in her crew and she was like she's capable of this right, Like she's capable of this right, Like she's capable of pacing her.
- 26:01Speaker 2: The girl was like yeah, yeah, she's fine, she's just anxious, Cause pacing stressful.
- 26:07Speaker 1: You don't want to like mess up somebody's race.
- 26:09Speaker 1: No, no, I've paced.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Uh, I've paced Leadville twice and Uray the Uray 100 miler Gosh that's a hard race, um, but Leadville.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I think Leadville was much more fun, yeah, much more energy yeah even though I was shitting on Leadville earlier.
- 26:23Speaker 1: The one thing I will say is when you get over, what is it?
- 26:28Speaker 2: it's that one climb at the end power line, power line and everybody's like there's like a giant party up there at night and everybody's like passing out shots yeah, it's like I think that's a lot of fun, except it's very anxiety-inducing until you get out there.
- 26:44Speaker 1: So you did go to the finish then with her?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I ran the last six miles with her.
- 26:47Speaker 1: What was that like?
- 26:48Speaker 2: That was awesome it was.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, finishing on the track is so cool and especially like the last mile, your whole crew can around with you if you want, and so pretty much everybody met up with us then, which was good, because that was the part of the course that wasn't actually marked very well and I was like I'm glad you guys are here, because I can't tell where we're supposed to go anymore.
- 27:11Speaker 2: It's just roads.
- 27:11Speaker 2: But yeah, it was incredible.
- 27:12Speaker 2: And even the aid station at Robie Point was like there's lights and they have like the little like candle things along the sides of the road for a while, Although when you hit the aid station at Robie Point you still have more of a climb to go.
- 27:26Speaker 2: That's a little deceptive.
- 27:28Speaker 2: There's like another 200 meters, maybe it's like a road climb.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Oh, it's a road climb yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 2: So it wasn't terrible.
- 27:34Speaker 2: But yeah, and I just kept telling Lauren I was like we're almost to the road.
- 27:38Speaker 2: It's going gonna feel so like you're gonna feel the energy return when you're like pushing through the road and she like sprinted the last half mile like it was crazy, yeah, but you know you feel that energy and it just, and what's the like?
- 27:52Speaker 1: the finish line vibes like is everybody just going crazy?
- 27:54Speaker 1: What time did you guys finish?
- 27:55Speaker 2: so that's where it was like a little bit of a bummer, because she was she's top 20 women.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah, she's like 12th or 13th, not that far off of like 10th.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Yeah and like in front of a lot of sponsored women yeah um, and it seems like they a lot of people are there for the top 10 men.
- 28:15Speaker 2: After the first few women come through, it seems like the crowd starts to disperse a little bit.
- 28:21Speaker 2: I think we finished around like 11.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Not that late.
- 28:25Speaker 2: That's very early and there was definitely still quite a few people there, but not the crowds that you see for like the top men, even the top 20 men, finishing, so that was like a little bit of a bummer.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I was hoping for like giant electric.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Yeah, no, if you want that you have to be a golden hour finisher for like giant electric.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah, no, if you want that, you have to be a golden hour finisher.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Okay, did you go back and watch?
- 28:45Speaker 2: We did, yeah, that was.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I was like wanted to cry like yeah it was just like so emotional, I don't know.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I think that's its own level of impressive.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Yeah, knowing it's gonna take you 30 hours to do a race and doing it anyway.
- 28:57Speaker 2: And then, yeah, especially those last like 10 minutes of people just like crawling their way to the finish line and everybody's like oh, it's really special and I know this is a sub-ultra podcast, but like, still, like I don't know.
- 29:09Speaker 1: This is such a special race that I'm just always interested to hear people's feedback.
- 29:13Speaker 2: I highly recommend.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Like if you know somebody that needs a crew, go do it like it was awesome you might get a little.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I was surprised I got a little like nauseous on the roads out there really I was like.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I live in colorado.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I drive mountain roads all the time, but the roads back are like you're on them forever and they're super twisty so that was not fun, but otherwise it's a really cool experience at least you didn't have to go through the canyons.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not so, not so fun, yeah very hot.
- 29:39Speaker 2: um, yeah, yeah, no.
- 29:41Speaker 2: I highly recommend, if you get the chance.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Do you think you'd ever be interested in running like 100 miles?
- 29:46Speaker 2: Oh, no Fair enough, maybe a 50 mile.
- 29:50Speaker 2: I think I could see myself, maybe, maybe.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Maybe it's got to be the right one, right.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Yeah, 100 miles?
- 29:57Speaker 2: Absolutely not.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I've paced lauren um twice, at javelina now and then at western um and, yeah, like she's one of the toughest people I know and just seeing what she goes through I'm like no, this is not for me javelina is like, javelina is fun.
- 30:15Speaker 2: It's a good party, fun yeah and javelina is so well set up because it's just loops yeah yeah so for crew it's super easy, just like four or five, five, yeah, yeah there's one loop that's slightly different than the others, because there's four of the loops are just under 20 miles, so then one of them is a little bit longer.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Um, yeah, it's awesome that's another one.
- 30:36Speaker 2: I gotta, yeah, check out I've always paced her last loop in the dark, and that's a interesting experience yeah, I don't do any night running I could imagine that's probably yeah
- 30:45Speaker 2: fun, but also not it makes like for me.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Both years I've had like stump, like I've only been able to get down one gel in 20 miles.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Well, I'm like eat, eat, lauren, keep eating.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Like don't watch what I'm doing, just keep eating.
- 31:00Speaker 2: But I think, like night running, like I don't, because you know I don't night yeah, like it's hard to like take down fluid and gels at that point, um, and then you hear like the coyotes and stuff.
- 31:10Speaker 2: You're like okay, let's keep running oh, it's so cool oh man, yeah, it's again.
- 31:15Speaker 1: I think pacing is such a cool experience I'm like iffy on it, like sometimes it's exciting, it's like I'm a I'm, you know, this is why I love sub ultra is because like.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Our races are like eight or eight to ten in the morning yeah it's a two hour situation.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's over.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I got the rest of my day this whole like two in the morning thing for the morning thing.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Well, and that's where I'm also like our crew.
- 31:39Speaker 2: There's a crew of us that have always helped learn.
- 31:42Speaker 2: We're all kind of like we're really glad you're fast.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because if you were slow, I don't know.
- 31:48Speaker 2: It'd be a whole different experience if we're out here for 24 hours, but you're doing this in like 16.
- 31:52Speaker 2: That's a big difference.
- 31:55Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 31:55Speaker 1: That's very fair.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Yeah, if you were walking in the next day at Leadville or something like that, I don't know.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Right, that might be a different pacing experience and crewing experience.
- 32:04Speaker 1: That's very fair yeah, so you just have this amazing dub at this race.
- 32:09Speaker 1: What is next on your schedule?
- 32:12Speaker 2: Road marathon.
- 32:13Speaker 1: That's it.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Yeah, no more trails, oh wow.
- 32:15Speaker 2: No, I just couldn't find anything that I wanted at this time of year and I really want to try to break three hours at CIM, so I'm kind of going all in on that.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so that starts this week.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I was just talking to Mason Copey.
- 32:30Speaker 1: I think he's doing something very similar.
- 32:32Speaker 1: He's finishing up the Cirque stuff and the same thing, getting ready for CIM, yeah, so interesting.
- 32:38Speaker 2: So doing that, hopefully I break three hours and maybe I never have to run another marathon in my life and can do more trail stuff.
- 32:45Speaker 2: So to me summer is just trail time like I just I don't want to do any road races, I want to be out on the trails, and then fall is a nice time to train for some trail stuff, because it's still good weather, um, and you know, we have pretty temperate fall and even early winter here, so it works out pretty well.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel I was just joking with Rose, because we, you know, even like in the middle, like I do a lot of doubles and I'll go like do it usually like two or three times a week, I'll hop on the incline, yeah, and in the summer it's terrible.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Manitou is so busy and I'm like it's only gotten busier.
- 33:18Speaker 1: So I'm like I love that October through even, like December, I mean even.
- 33:23Speaker 2: January.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not that bad.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Nobody's in town.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Especially early in the morning, Nobody's around.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 1: And you can get on any trail.
- 33:31Speaker 1: That's one thing I do love about the Springs is like, despite it being like a quote unquote, like relative metro area, you can get just about on any trail and not see too many people, yeah.
- 33:42Speaker 2: I don't understand.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I feel like, since I've moved here to Colorado and living in the springs, anytime you go elsewhere in Colorado people are like, oh, you live in the spring, yeah, like it's a bad thing, right?
- 33:52Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 33:53Speaker 1: Dude, I would put the spring and this is a hot take but like I would put the springs against Boulder any day, yes, day, yes, and like we've got.
- 34:02Speaker 1: I mean I wouldn't say we have the density of athletes because everybody in boulder is competitive athlete.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Yeah, but like, as far as trails go and you're comparing trails- yeah hate to say it, but I think boulder, uh, boulder is great.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I love boulder.
- 34:11Speaker 1: It makes sense to me why everybody moves there.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but like just if you really don't want to see any people on your trails and still get 3 000 foot climbs right and well, and pike speak is literally right here yeah, oh like which?
- 34:23Speaker 2: that's also for me hot take.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I hate bar trail yeah, fair enough, fair enough I have not touched bar trail once this year I've only been on it once actually um.
- 34:34Speaker 2: I, even when I was training for like the ascent, very rarely ran on par um, but like the backside, like there's so many trails around pikes even, and like the fact that you could easily get to 14 000 feet if you wanted to, or 13 or 12 or whatever, like it's not that easy elsewhere no, and you know we've got like I'm not gonna say where, but we've got like steep ski roads, like we've got all kinds of, and like the incline is just like such a if you learn how to use the incline the right way, like that could be the best.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Such a good strength builder like there's just so many different like tools yeah, um, I have not learned how to use the incline, the right way.
- 35:11Speaker 1: It's taken me a while, it's got to be it's.
- 35:15Speaker 1: I think I finally figured it out.
- 35:17Speaker 1: But yeah you know, john aziz, yeah, he's like a machine, um he's.
- 35:22Speaker 2: He kind of helped me understand it a little bit better on what to do with it yeah, yeah, for me it's like a once every six months thing so I'm like oh it's such a good idea and then I do it.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I'm like nope, I hate it for it to work it's got to be like twice a week at least at least twice a week.
- 35:35Speaker 1: It's so specific like it's so specific, but like and then.
- 35:38Speaker 1: But you'll see people that like, do like every day.
- 35:40Speaker 2: That's too much, too much, yeah also, I don't know hot take as well living in the springs, especially because it's like the incliners yeah, it's like it's a little subculture.
- 35:48Speaker 2: It's like its own subculture.
- 35:50Speaker 1: But there's so many other things right, like I don't want to do the incline every day.
- 35:54Speaker 2: No, I don't understand the appeal to that like no, it's.
- 35:57Speaker 1: I look at it as like a piece of my run.
- 36:00Speaker 1: You know something?
- 36:01Speaker 1: Um, I know there's like I don't I don't know how much you follow like training theory and stuff like that, but like see how people do like double thresholds and all that and like that's a, that's a great place for a climb, for a double threshold.
- 36:12Speaker 1: But you gotta, you gotta mix it up.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Can't be just doing just that, right, you know.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, um, but like you said, if, if, if it's used as a tool in the correct way.
- 36:21Speaker 1: But like I see people that are like, don't get me wrong, great athletes, but do the incline every day, every day, and you eventually lose.
- 36:29Speaker 1: You don't.
- 36:30Speaker 1: How do I say this?
- 36:31Speaker 1: Maybe you can understand this from like a pt perspective.
- 36:33Speaker 1: You don't run as efficiently, you lose your running economy right, right again.
- 36:37Speaker 2: it's just so specific to that one thing, like you're great at going up the incline, but but you're going to get passed in a race because you can't run, right yeah?
- 36:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not running.
- 36:47Speaker 1: It's fair enough.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's very different.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't.
- 36:52Speaker 1: I like that you have hot takes.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I've got.
- 36:56Speaker 2: I feel like I just have more and more hot takes.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I'm here for the hot takes.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Same same same.
- 37:02Speaker 1: What kind of trails do you like to run on?
- 37:06Speaker 2: Oh, I like a good mix.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I really I like runnable stuff can be nice, like just to get that flowy, like especially with the road running background, like I'm not a very good power hiker, that's something I'm trying to get better at, so I do like something that's runnable.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Not a very good power hiker, that's something I'm trying to get better at, so I do like something that's runnable.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Um, but I love to get up high, like finding some fun ridge lines to just like run around is great.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Or doing like some sort of loop where you can get up high for a while and then you come back down.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Um.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Didn't get to do as much of that as I would have liked this summer, but yeah what is your, what is your prep for?
- 37:38Speaker 1: uh like speed goat, look like.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Um, to be honest, it wasn't very specific.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I wasn't sure what to expect at speed goat, especially cause that race was only like the second iteration of, so I was like there's not a whole lot of data to pull from Um, so basically just a lot of trail running around here, like, again, we have a little bit of everything, so you can get some really steep stuff, you can get some really runnable stuff.
- 37:59Speaker 2: So just trying to mix that up a little bit and then, when I'm really on it, trying to throw in some speed work, like once a week or something too.
- 38:08Speaker 2: But it really wasn't very specific this year, which is why I was surprised that it went so well.
- 38:13Speaker 1: You don't have a coach, right?
- 38:14Speaker 1: Well, adam coaches me.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, which is nice because we have that back and forth and we're yeah, which is nice because we have that like back and forth, and be like today is not a workout day, like it's just not gonna happen.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Or sometimes he'll see me and be like today is not a workout day, like you do not look like you should do a workout today.
- 38:28Speaker 2: I'm like, thank you, I didn't want to say it, but I was feeling it.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Um, so yeah, so he'll coach me, like so we have a really specific training for the cim build um, but then other times it's just really loosey, goosey kind of whatever I want to do.
- 38:41Speaker 1: So I'm so excited for you to say I am.
- 38:43Speaker 1: That course is awesome.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Yeah, as far as marathons go.
- 38:46Speaker 2: I loved it two years ago, so I'm hoping that I love it again and have the same kind of magical experience.
- 38:52Speaker 2: Um, yeah, it's just really well supported, especially like if you're a woman at this level, like there's so many people to run with.
- 39:02Speaker 2: I think the group I started out with was like over 100 runners, probably in the pace group, and then by the end it whittled down to like 20, but that's amazing yeah, it was nice because you can just I like last time I did it you can just shut your brain off and just be like okay, I'm just like literally listening to everybody's feet hit the pavement and like zoning out and trusting that the pacers are gonna take me where I need to go.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Yeah, oh wow, I like that approach yeah I don't know like I feel like uh, it's one of the few times I've been zen in a race.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say like I feel like I'd have to put like music on because it's so far.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Yes, like man, I did have music for the last once.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I fell off the pacers with like six miles to go.
- 39:40Speaker 2: That that was like.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I was like, okay, I've got to whip out the music now.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Like.
- 39:43Speaker 2: I kept hearing footsteps behind me and I was like it's like the next pace group coming to catch me, like you've got to run.
- 39:48Speaker 2: And it was never them.
- 39:48Speaker 2: But um, you know, you get those fears in your head.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Oh yeah, um, but yeah, for the first, like 18 miles I don't know that many feet is kind of like mesmerizing to hear the rhythm and so, yeah, it was cool.
- 40:07Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Great experience.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:08Speaker 1: What is that like your mileage build look like for something like this.
- 40:11Speaker 1: It's like is it over Cause I see people doing for marathon builds like well into a hundred miles.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Yeah, not me.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Um, I have tried so many times to do higher mileage and I just either don't have the time for it or my body breaks down, like, even when I was in college, most collegiate female runners doing the 5K, 10k or running like 50, 60, maybe more miles a week.
- 40:35Speaker 2: I'm going to be in the forties and fifties, we'll see.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Um, that's where I felt like I fell apart a little bit.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Last time, when I didn't break three was like those last couple of miles.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I just didn't have the like mileage under my legs to like deal with that fatigue.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Um, so I've been trying.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Boston was an experiment in that I got up to a couple of like 50 mile weeks and that part of it felt pretty good.
- 41:01Speaker 2: But, um, yeah, I just sometimes just get these little niggles that pop up and then I'm like and I'm down to 30 for two weeks and yeah so, yeah, it's um.
- 41:11Speaker 2: I'm a lower mileage person, like more focused on quality than quantity.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Um like this week I've got two different speed workouts, so there you go see how it goes.
- 41:20Speaker 1: I feel I feel your pain.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I got more of a moderate mileage person Like the most I'll get in a year Like I think my biggest week this year was like 85 miles, something like that.
- 41:29Speaker 1: But I have like peers that run like well into a hundred miles a week for like sub ultra stuff and I'm like how does your body take that you know?
- 41:36Speaker 1: Granted, I was doing a lot of like borderline erroring on like too much specificity, I think, earlier in the season.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Um, like too much on trails, too much on steep trails.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Whereas, like I feel like if I just would have ran on Santa Fe flat, I probably would have saved myself a world of pain and just probably had a lot more fitness but you know everybody, everybody's different.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true, that's true, that's true.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 42:00Speaker 1: I went on Santa Fe today and, like I don't know what's in bloom right now, oh no, I must have been Don't tell me that I have a workout tonight.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Like my allergies, like this past week and a half of like in Colorado have never been worse.
- 42:11Speaker 1: I don't know what it is.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Well, it's been so wet, yeah, like we've seen so many flowers that are still in bloom, but I'm like normally this time of year so dry, it's a desert.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, I can't wait for, like, our first cold snap.
- 42:27Speaker 1: I think thursday is supposed to be in the 60s.
- 42:28Speaker 2: I'm like, yes, break it on yeah, I'm not quite ready to let summer go, but I'm ready for the 90 degree days to go yeah, well, especially because you guys are in the springs, right, yeah, here's a little cooler.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Like 90s in the springs is like mid-80s here.
- 42:42Speaker 1: It's like you know no, it's been hot yeah yeah, did you do any high country stuff this year?
- 42:48Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Um, we went down to the sangre's a couple times.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Oh, I love it down there my favorite mountain range beautiful and it's underrated underrated which don't, don't, go there.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Oh no, I'm just kidding there's nothing really around there.
- 43:03Speaker 1: So like, unless you're in zelida, right, unless you want to go to creststone, yeah, or I think they have colts have fun with that it's an interesting yeah place down there.
- 43:13Speaker 2: But yeah, like the trails are, we've we backpack quite a bit too.
- 43:16Speaker 2: We just got back last week from a backpacking trip um more in like nath nathrop area where's that um in between bb and salida oh, yeah, okay, yeah like we were up by like antero, yeah kind of um, but uh, we did.
- 43:29Speaker 2: We have backpacked a couple times down in the sangres and I mean you see, like three people, little time you're out there yeah, it's so nice, it is so quiet.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, did you, uh, the mosquito season there, unlike anywhere else in colorado?
- 43:41Speaker 2: yeah, yeah yeah, um no, we've luckily avoided that.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Um, when we've gone backpacking, it usually it's been early june or mid-June, which is maybe not the best time to backpack either, because you've got to deal with some snow.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, avoided the mosquitoes.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Avoided the mosquitoes Super cool.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Do you guys?
- 43:59Speaker 1: Have you guys done any like out of state, like Wyoming or anything like that?
- 44:02Speaker 1: No, I really want to do some in Wyoming.
- 44:04Speaker 2: I'm a little scared of grizzlies.
- 44:05Speaker 2: I just got that.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I got to be honest with you and it's experiences now have been colorado, utah, yeah, um, the first time I've ever been to wyoming was, or like, explore.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Like the jackson area, like the teton range was last weekend, um, oh my gosh, or no, two weekends ago, sorry, um, just like the amount of like animals.
- 44:26Speaker 1: I've never seen so many animals in one place in my life.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Um, which is weird because it's a big place, but like they and I don't know if it's because, like colorado is just like heavily trafficked and we have a lot more people, so things get ran over, yeah, um, or hunted out, whatever, but, like yo, there's a lot of animals there.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I didn't see any grizzlies.
- 44:43Speaker 2: I did, actually, you wanted to see a grizzly.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I brought um.
- 44:46Speaker 1: I know, I brought bear spray listen to this so I'd like rent out at airbnb.
- 44:50Speaker 1: And like I'm staying in driggs idaho, so I'm on the idaho side.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah and um, the race was at grand targhee and I always like go play on the course before just to make sure I, you know, learn the course.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and like I'm like leaving and like and like every me guys like yo uh, you know, you're just going for a run.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, he's like where are you going?
- 45:07Speaker 1: I'm like grand targhee, it's like inbound ski area, I'm not gonna get eaten by a bear.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Um, and he's like, oh, you really should bring bear spray with you.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Like pressuring me, I was like, all right, I feel kind of.
- 45:17Speaker 1: I was like, fine, I'll bring myself, I bring my belt.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I'm like got this giant belt with me bringing the bear spray.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Like looking around now I'm like checking over my shoulders uh, I didn't see anything.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like almost like disappointed, like I would kind of hope and I see something yeah I was that person when we first moved here.
- 45:33Speaker 2: I did not see a bear until last year oh really I've only ever seen a bear twice, and that was when I was in my car twice, which has been a little disappointing, because I do really want to see a bear, especially because here they're black bears so as long as you don't get between mom and baby, it's like you're probably fine but the grizzly bears like have you been to shine mountain zoo?
- 45:51Speaker 2: Yeah no, I haven't been to the zoo.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Okay, I'm from st louis are you guys got a good zoo or bad zoo.
- 45:56Speaker 1: It's free and it's huge, okay, and we used to run through it, like my.
- 45:59Speaker 1: The school I went to in st louis was super close to by and in the winter, when it's super dead, we would like run through the zoo oh so cool our training runs like partially, so I I keep meaning to go to the zoo here and I just haven't yo, it's legit, like I'm a zoo guy don't, even though, like I do have my own like views on I do feel bad for you know, but like I almost look at it as like a conservation tool to help teach people right, regardless.
- 46:23Speaker 1: It's a different conversation, but like our zoo is legit, yeah, and the grizzly bears there are like gigantic like so it might make me more scared.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Well, that was, that's what I'm saying like they're so big, like I have, like, if I was to see something like that in the woods, like yo that's the biggest animal I've ever seen, and especially like the, the paws, I don't know.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Like I said, it's just like if I was to see that in the woods, I I would, yeah, just eat me, I'm fine.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Um, yeah, so yeah, and they're there.
- 46:50Speaker 1: That's what's kind of crazy, and we might have them in colorado I know I I tell myself that they're not here.
- 46:56Speaker 1: They probably are well, not out here, but I know right, like southwest or northwest yeah, but I mean we'd hike over there too.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you never know, you never know it's like a.
- 47:06Speaker 1: It's actually it's a very common question.
- 47:08Speaker 1: I ask on the podcast yeah, because we have this.
- 47:10Speaker 1: There's this book highly recommend called ghost grizzlies.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Um, and it's about the last bear that was killed in the 80s, the Ed Wiseman bear, down by Pagosa.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I've heard about this bear, oh yeah.
- 47:21Speaker 1: And every now and then there's incredible sightings of grizzlies floating around.
- 47:24Speaker 2: I'm sure there's not a lot of them, but I'm sure there are.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:28Speaker 2: You know, they don't know state boundaries.
- 47:37Speaker 1: No, no, no boundaries, they just travel wherever they want to.
- 47:38Speaker 1: It is interesting, though, like wyoming, so like if you guys do go out there, like it just feels more wild, yeah, like it's like the, the, no, like something like that is walking around the woods.
- 47:43Speaker 1: You're like, wow, so, and on that topic too, like I um, I've last year was the first year I've actually seen most of my bears in colorado, and the one I got close to I got like really close to oh really yeah, I was running.
- 47:57Speaker 1: It was like, so you could see like right outside my window, like we have Mount Hermon right there, and I was like on a lunch run in the middle, middle of the day, middle of the day and just like, hop on a lunch run, I'm like trotting along, get to the top and I got my earphones on.
- 48:16Speaker 1: I'm like jamming out.
- 48:17Speaker 1: The last thing I'm thinking about is a bear.
- 48:18Speaker 1: I literally almost ran into it, like his back was faced to me and he turns around and looks at me.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I look at him.
- 48:24Speaker 1: He just like jumps off the side of the ledge, just takes off.
- 48:27Speaker 1: So very well, he could have eaten me.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Um, and yeah, and I was like I got back to like work because like, literally run right back to this desk, pop on my computer, I'm like man, I bet nobody's had an experience like that at lunchtime.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Like that's, yeah, it's quite the quite the lunch, quite the work day, yeah, yeah yeah, no, I see, that's funny because I always tell myself I haven't seen a bear because I'm like not a early morning person, so I'm like, oh, I'm running at like eight when the bears aren't on the trails anymore they're still out there, but well here, palmer lake and monument.
- 48:59Speaker 1: I don't know if you've done any trail running around here.
- 49:00Speaker 1: It's um, there's not a lot of like, maybe in like the closer spots to like town, but like outside of there it's, it gets kind of wild.
- 49:08Speaker 2: There's a lot of oh yeah, no, I almost died on the plane crash loop once so oh did you like dehydration, so bad oh my god like pee blood the next day.
- 49:16Speaker 2: It was a good time, jesus christ.
- 49:19Speaker 2: We were like on because it's all uphill we did like it's all uphill until the last two miles and the last two miles.
- 49:26Speaker 2: I was with, uh, some friends and I was like I can't, I can't run.
- 49:29Speaker 2: And they're like, yes, you can.
- 49:31Speaker 2: I was like no, I literally I cannot run this right now.
- 49:33Speaker 2: And I laid down in the middle of the trail and my friend was like you're in the sun, in the middle of the trail, like let's just get back to the car.
- 49:40Speaker 2: It was bad time.
- 49:41Speaker 2: I I don't want to do that loop ever again I'm sure I will.
- 49:44Speaker 1: I've only ever ran it once and because I I felt like it was just really far like I'm like if I die back here, no one's gonna find me, no one's gonna find you.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's out and you know what like not to go too deep into the lore of like palmer lake and monument, but like you know, there was like a mountain biker killed back there a while back there was like a serial killer maybe or something.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, fans uh of the podcast, check out google.
- 50:06Speaker 1: It's on.
- 50:06Speaker 1: There's like an outside article about it.
- 50:08Speaker 2: You can find out all you want to know yeah, I, I heard about that once while I was on a run back there and I was like I don't need to know this.
- 50:14Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, oh yeah, it's a cool spot, but like yeah, it's still it's.
- 50:18Speaker 1: It is kind of eerie, like makes you look over your shoulder like uh, yeah, I think the thing that scares me the most is the um and why I'm like way more careful.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Back there is um stray bullets.
- 50:27Speaker 1: People go back there and like discharge their firearms, um, so you gotta, I haven't heard it.
- 50:33Speaker 1: It's actually been a few years, because I do go back there a lot, yeah, and it's probably been maybe two years since the last time I heard someone like I'm talking like ar-15, like yeah, shooting a tree.
- 50:43Speaker 1: I'm like dude, what are you?
- 50:44Speaker 2: doing.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Why are you doing this?
- 50:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's one of my biggest fears with, uh, cheyenne canyon.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, is that it's just gonna go up in flames one day?
- 50:52Speaker 2: Because people go off Gold Camp and Old Stage and like shoot off fireworks or shoot their guns and I'm like, oh please.
- 50:59Speaker 1: It was spooky Rose and I actually went on Saturday or Sunday.
- 51:03Speaker 1: It was the first time I've ever ran on Gold Camp.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Well, like the fart, like when you just like we're all the case, like the tunnels.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and I was like, oh, this is really cool.
- 51:11Speaker 1: And we went like probably I don't know, like eight miles back, something like that, and it's flat, it's very flat, but it is awfully creepy back there.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Have you gone on old stage at all?
- 51:22Speaker 1: No.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Creepy.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Really.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Yeah, which is sad.
- 51:24Speaker 2: I mean maybe not right now when it's probably much more well-trafficked.
- 51:39Speaker 2: But I've ran once or twice with a friend like we'll start where did we start over by, like stratton, and you can work your way over to old stage.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Um yeah, there's like creepy cars pulled over off the side of the road, that's all.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Mount hermon road is right and it's.
- 51:45Speaker 2: It's a bummer because it's such a beautiful spot but, like personally, it's not where I would ever run I didn't even know.
- 51:50Speaker 2: You can like drive up there, because I've only seen a couple times on strava, so you can drive up old stage and eventually it meets gold camp, and then you can drive gold camp all the way to cripple creek okay I think you can drive it all the way to cripple creek.
- 52:02Speaker 2: It's a road all the way to cripple creek, um, but there was that tunnel collapse in the 80s or 90s, which is why part of that section of gold camp is closed.
- 52:10Speaker 2: But old stage you have to have.
- 52:12Speaker 1: I always thought it was a mine.
- 52:13Speaker 1: I had no idea there was a collapse.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Is that wait?
- 52:15Speaker 1: Is that where the school bus like?
- 52:16Speaker 1: Where all those kids in school?
- 52:17Speaker 2: I've heard that that wasn't true.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Oh, I don't know.
- 52:20Speaker 2: My wife was just telling me about it, I know no, I like I had heard that story multiple times and then someone was like, no, that's not true at all oh, I gotta google, so I don't know yeah, uh, but supposedly yes, yeah, that was the tunnel that collapsed.
- 52:35Speaker 2: It was like the third tunnel or something.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, no, but old stage it's a bummer, because it's really beautiful back there.
- 52:42Speaker 2: But I would personally, just as a tiny little person by myself, not by myself back there.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Not a good idea.
- 52:50Speaker 1: What is the name of the?
- 52:51Speaker 1: There's a road out of Not Cripple Creek, it's out of Cannon City.
- 52:59Speaker 1: It's like Phantom, phantom, something there's.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Phantom Canyon, that's it Well they found a bunch of dead bodies back there a couple years ago.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Oh really.
- 53:06Speaker 2: Oh, that's great, Because I've also wanted to run that, but maybe not.
- 53:10Speaker 1: I don't know if that's a good idea.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Yeah, colorado is an interesting place especially the more south you get.
- 53:18Speaker 1: I feel like, yeah, yeah, it's true, it's true but back to the sangre's, the sangre we were just talking earlier.
- 53:25Speaker 1: I want to um, oh man, those like sand creek lakes up just below the needle.
- 53:30Speaker 1: We go every september.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Um, there are some fkts.
- 53:34Speaker 1: I've been looking at like back in that area and I'm like, oh it's so, so just so gorgeous.
- 53:37Speaker 2: That's the one bummer about the san jores is a lot of the mountains down there are very high class like oh yeah, class three, class four, class five high terrain.
- 53:47Speaker 1: I just talked to a good buddy of mine and ron he's uh, he's been on the podcast.
- 53:50Speaker 1: I'm paul, he was does like search and rescue and he just did like took him.
- 53:53Speaker 1: He was out there for 17 hours on the needle doing a body recovery of someone that fell.
- 53:58Speaker 1: I was like dude, that's, that's high consequence.
- 54:01Speaker 1: So do you do any of that stuff like scrambling?
- 54:04Speaker 2: I've done some class three I'm okay with that.
- 54:06Speaker 2: I don't know how much I want to attempt past that.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Maybe if I climb like climbed more yeah had more climbing experience but um, yeah, I'm okay with like class three.
- 54:16Speaker 1: That's longs was fine yeah, I didn't think longs.
- 54:19Speaker 1: I've never done longs.
- 54:19Speaker 1: It's on my list yeah, we actually.
- 54:21Speaker 2: We had a friend who lives up in fort collins and does it a lot, and so he took us up some back route, which was really cool, but would not have done it without him being there going the route because there was no trail.
- 54:32Speaker 2: It was just like figuring it out looking for a rock that looks like a diving board and I'm like, okay, that's our marker, like they all kind of do.
- 54:42Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a good time though.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Oh, it's so cool yeah, my buddy, um big shout out.
- 54:48Speaker 1: We're gonna do a big pot on it.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Uh, michael michelino, since harry just broke the fk2 on the grand teton oh, I saw your post about that yesterday.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it was pretty crazy that's cool that's got some fifth class climbing and that's like some wild shit the fact that he did that like two plus hours that's wild yeah, people are crazy athletes yeah, no again.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Maybe if I was did more climbing, which is something I find intriguing.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't have time for it, so yeah, trying to fit that in the schedule is hard, it's, and it's a completely different thing.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, it's, uh, the scrambling thing I don't that's where boulder might get us is we don't have like a flat iron.
- 55:26Speaker 1: If we throw in a flat iron, then we're officially better, but like that's it.
- 55:29Speaker 1: You know well.
- 55:32Speaker 1: Hey, we're about like an hour, so let's get into some good questions now.
- 55:35Speaker 1: So who inspires you?
- 55:37Speaker 2: oh, that's a deep one.
- 55:39Speaker 2: Um, I don't know.
- 55:42Speaker 2: I mean I have so many, especially since moving here.
- 55:44Speaker 2: There's so many incredible friends that I've made that just do badass things that I'm just like I want to be like you, um, yeah, like a lot of my friends, um, I am a huge like track nerd, so I just like like to follow the sport of running in general.
- 56:01Speaker 2: I just find all of it like the olympics.
- 56:03Speaker 2: If it could be a thing instead of a human.
- 56:05Speaker 2: The olympics, like, if anything just makes you like emotional.
- 56:09Speaker 2: For me, it's like I just find the olympics inspiring, like seeing so many people like meet their dreams and goals and yeah, like that sort of thing.
- 56:16Speaker 2: If it's just like, yeah, trying to do your best and be the best at what you can be I love that.
- 56:23Speaker 1: Yeah, are you a competitive person?
- 56:24Speaker 2: oh, very much.
- 56:25Speaker 2: So, yeah, I try not to be, but very much so interesting.
- 56:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like that's most of the people I have on the podcast.
- 56:33Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, you know, I I try not to be, but yeah, I love to be yeah.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it depends on the thing, like if I know I'm not very good at it, I'm not as competitive, just because nobody likes to be bad at something.
- 56:43Speaker 1: But is there anything new you've picked up recently that you've like wanted to?
- 56:49Speaker 2: No, I wish I'm pretty boring.
- 56:51Speaker 2: We backpack and run and I do PT and that's about it Interesting.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been, because I personally have thought about this recently.
- 56:59Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I haven't been a new, but anything in a long time it's kind of weird.
- 57:02Speaker 1: I'm like oh.
- 57:03Speaker 1: I might have to find something new to do.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I would like to.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:08Speaker 2: So growing from Missouri to ski but also being a physical therapist, I see how many people get injured skiing oh yeah, the knee thing, yeah, yeah so we okay.
- 57:17Speaker 2: So we've cross-country skied once or twice and I would like to do more of that.
- 57:20Speaker 2: I'm not very good at it, but it was a lot of fun.
- 57:23Speaker 1: So yeah, cross-country skiing, I think, would be so you should float this, float this to adam and see what you think.
- 57:28Speaker 1: So I just when I literally the whole point of me asking that question is because I literally am in the process now to figure out some of the stuff I want to do in the off season yeah and I got a set of roller skis, yeah okay, adam really wants to roller blade like so badly.
- 57:44Speaker 2: So this is what I'm saying like, but like.
- 57:46Speaker 1: And then you throw in the point.
- 57:47Speaker 1: I literally just talked to the guy at lucky today he's sending me the poles, so like I've got like a whole kit coming in yeah, and I, and I'm going to be just this psycho on the roads.
- 57:56Speaker 2: No, you know what I think that would be super beneficial.
- 57:58Speaker 1: I think you build enormous aerobic engine with it.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Yes, I mean the people who have the highest VO2 maxes are like cross country skiers because, you're using upper body, lower body.
- 58:08Speaker 2: I was actually having this conversation with a friend recently.
- 58:12Speaker 2: People who are going to poles are the like schemo athletes that's right they know how to use them.
- 58:17Speaker 2: It's like an extension of their body versus I don't know what I'm doing with poles, like, so I think it would be a super.
- 58:25Speaker 2: It's.
- 58:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and look at how many schemo athletes are really good runners all right.
- 58:29Speaker 1: So here's the deal I'm gonna start a club.
- 58:31Speaker 1: I'm start a club in colorado springs like a roller ski and just make it accessible and that way we could get like a big group.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm down, because it's the thing we don't get a lot of snow Even in the springs.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Not a lot of snow ice on the roads If we have like a paved path.
- 58:45Speaker 1: 2%.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do it.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Yeah, look at that.
- 58:50Speaker 2: We're all noobs at something right, yeah, I would be a noob at that.
- 58:52Speaker 1: That'd be fun yeah, yeah, we're all gonna get super fit.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Um, all right, what's your take on bigfoot?
- 59:00Speaker 2: I think bigfoot's real.
- 59:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I had a professor in college.
- 59:04Speaker 2: He was like in his 80s and he taught a logic class and he had a bigfoot experience and he would always everyone took the class because they really just wanted to hear his bigfoot story.
- 59:15Speaker 2: It was like this whole, it was like this lore at our school Like, and he was very convincing.
- 59:22Speaker 1: So I why not?
- 59:23Speaker 1: What's his story?
- 59:24Speaker 2: Oh, it was a long time ago, but basically it was.
- 59:26Speaker 2: He was in the Pacific Northwest.
- 59:27Speaker 2: They had like a mountain cabin in the middle of nowhere and they had been hunting and something stole the like meat off their cabin.
- 59:37Speaker 2: But it wasn't a bear and it wasn't a mountain lion, like there was no prints or anything, except maybe there was like one big, like big foot looking kind of print.
- 59:45Speaker 2: But he also thinks he saw something.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 59:50Speaker 2: So he was very believable and he teaches logic, so like.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Yeah, he can't bevable.
- 59:56Speaker 1: And he teaches logic so like yeah, he can't be lying, right?
- 59:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so I mean, I think, is it like humanoid?
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Maybe, maybe not.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Is it another animal, probably?
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: And do we really think?
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Are we arrogant enough to think we've discovered everything there is to discover?
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Definitely not.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Definitely not yeah, so I think it's yeah.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so cool.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: I think it's.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I could see it for sure.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I piggybacked that off, like the comment I made about the grizzly bears, like I don't know.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: I like the idea of like the woods being bigger and spooky and, just like you know, like you're not the baddest thing in the woods.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Oh, definitely, I'm definitely not the baddest thing in the woods.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: And like I, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: Like it, it's I want to believe.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: I think colorado is not a suitable place.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: No, I think pacific northwest.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: I think you're right, I think there's enough.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: I mean, like I um, I don't know how much you've explored up there, but like, yeah, like back near, like mount st helens, like right there is dense, dense, I don't know, like, yeah, it would.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: It would make sense to me, it would definitely 1000 like that and like lower canada yeah, yeah, oh my god, and you think about like all the way up, like so yes, there's like Bam, vancouver, all that area, but like that's not a highly populated place, yeah, there's just so much up there.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: So yeah, no, I'm, I'm all in yeah, I'm thinking what's your take on the aliens then?
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: again, like I don't know.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Space freaks me out.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: I don't like to think about it too much.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: It's just too big to.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I don't know Space freaks me out.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: I don't like to think about it too much.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: It's just too big to comprehend.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I don't think we're like meant to Right, exactly.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: But again, how arrogant do we think we are, that we're the only thing?
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Is there something exactly like us?
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Maybe, maybe not, but there's got to be something else out there.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: What if, like I don't know, shit's been crazy lately.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: What if, like the aliens, are like us?
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: I've been thinking about that?
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Have you ever wondered if we're like an experiment?
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I tend to think that's kind of what we are, I wouldn't say experiment.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: Or like they're just watching us, like why do they do the things they do?
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Well, they're definitely scratching their heads Like what are these like chimpanzees with big brains doing?
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Like they got nukes, like what the fuck?
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: But like I, you know, I, I I wonder, I don't know I, because there's a lot of like mixed up science about this and I still I've done my own research and I can't find like, because, like, my background is in geology and stuff like that.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: So, like we were taught in science, you are taught that you know pretty strategic or specific um, like evolution, yeah, right, so you, you automatically think like, all right, we evolved and you know we became this and yada, yada, yada and I keep that separate from, like the religion conversation.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: But there isn't a lot of like stuff there in the fossil record to really think like see, like, where we came from.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: That's a little bizarre to me, not that like I question it, but I just because you know, and I forgot, from a paleontology and geology perspective, like there's a lot of things we don't like most of the animals like we discover, uh, or we don't discover because their bones aren't actually fossilized, so we don't really know, right, um, yeah, I don't know it's.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think deeply into that.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: I like that, yeah, so you never know we could be.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: You never know.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Like I said, it's like it's kind of funny, like I think the thing I've been pondering lately is like what if?
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Like it's uh, either us from the future, if we figured out that shit and like now we're coming back to check on these like primitive apes, like what, what are these crazy psychos up to?
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Um, or it could be, I don't know.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I've heard other conflicting things like they're us, uh, or not us, um, they've been here all along right, be that.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that stuff.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: It's interesting, it hurts my brain but I do to your point, though I don't think we're able to the reason, because I feel the same way.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: You think about, um, you know space, and you think about, just like, infinity and all that stuff, and it's like, um, it doesn't hurt your brain, but it just makes you feel so insignificant.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I think that's how I feel and it's like, wow, what you know?
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Like, are we just not meant to comprehend that as a human?
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: probably, probably, I feel the same way about deep ocean stuff yeah, it's freaky yeah you don't know what's down there.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: We know more about space than we do.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: The deep ocean, like it's true, it's true, freaky, and our planet is mostly ocean yeah, you know what's lurking down there, and like I.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: This is like.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: This freaks me out, like when we like, when you like, fly to europe or whatever, and you fly over the ocean, I'm always like, freaked out, I'm like oh man, I don't like this yeah not about that.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: All right, we're almost.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna get to the last question.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: I was trying to think of what I wanted to ask you, whether it be ai or simulation theory.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Uh, let's go.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: Ai, what's your, what's your take on ai?
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: now I don't like it yeah I don't, I don't know.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: I feel like I mean, I don't think it's at a point anytime soon gonna like take our jobs or anything like that, like yeah, it's still, I saw something the other day where it asked how many hours there are in strawberry, and it couldn't get that right.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: So, but chat gbt is creepy I haven't like played with it a little bit, but not like just the amount of information that it can just like spew for you.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: It's cool, but it's also kind of creepy and I don't know.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: I just feel like it's gonna take away from innovation in some way, you know yeah, well, people are special.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I think we've, I think we lose sight of the fact that creativity and I'd say creativity is a very uniquely human thing, and I don't know if robots don't have that.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Not yet at least.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: They're a very linear process.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and humans are not linear and the way they.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: it's going to be interesting because, like, how old are you?
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: I'm 30.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm 33.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: So in our lifetime we're going to see it like I don't know if it's going to be interesting because, like, how old are you?
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: You're, I'm 30, 30.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm 33.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: So in our lifetime we're going to see it Like I don't.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: I don't know if it's going to be the robot overlord it might be but like we're going to see some shit and I I'm not really ready for that.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I'm not.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I'm almost envious of, like, my grandfather, who's like almost 90 and ready to check out.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, you've seen some shit and like you know, like you went from the forties and thirties all the way to now, and like now we have computers in our hands on the phone.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: So the stuff that we're going to see.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be interesting, or maybe, or maybe it's going to plateau and then well, the other thing is too, is war.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: You think about war like if um, something with, like the, like the chips, uh, so something with taiwan happens.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: We don't have the chips, and then ai doesn't really become a thing which I wouldn't be too upset about.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: But right, I think john is used to be upset with me for saying that I've had a lot of people that are like very, very pro ai and like they make good points.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I just think from um, I think I'm very I'm just like innately pro-human and I worry for the future of, like I'm just, I'm like very pro people, right, you know I like creativity.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that the more robots that get involved, um, the more we lose.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Like I think humans are a very interesting species where we need, uh, we need reward, but we also need purpose, right, and if we don't have that purpose, it's like what are we?
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: What are we doing?
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: It's like what was uh Wally.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen that.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Yeah, like that's what our society is going to be.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: It's just fat people floating in suits Cause to do anything.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: I hate that.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: That's so sad.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I think, and it's, and as trail runners or people in the mountains, it's that spirit of adventure.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: I think that, like we very much still hold important you know, just athletes in general, yeah.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: So I think it's a good note to close on.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for coming on.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me plug anything uh, sure, if you want to learn some stuff about vaginas occasionally.

- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Uh, because I couldn't think of anything more creative.
