- 0:00Hello, welcome to Chatting with Cara.
- 0:02I'm Cara, your compassionate life coach, relationship with
- 0:05food specialist, and I'm here to help you understand yourself a
- 0:09little bit better each week. However you found your way here
- 0:13today, I'm glad you're listening.
- 0:14Maybe your friend sent you this episode, maybe you've been with
- 0:17me from the start, or maybe you're just curious about doing
- 0:20things differently when it comes to food, your body, and how you
- 0:24feel about yourself. Whatever bought you here, you're
- 0:27in the right place. Here's what I do on the show.
- 0:29I have honest, kind conversations about the stuff
- 0:33that's actually holding you back.
- 0:35Not the surface. Several stuff, the deep stuff,
- 0:37the root causes. Because when you truly
- 0:40understand why you think and feel the way you do, then
- 0:44everything starts to change. It doesn't feel hard anymore, it
- 0:47just feels natural. So get comfortable, make
- 0:50yourself a big, and let's have a proper chat about the things
- 0:53that matter. This is Chatting with Karma.
- 0:57Hello and welcome to this week's Chatting with Carla.
- 1:01Now, a little bit of a different one for you this week because I
- 1:04realised that I go deep in these podcasts and the last few weeks
- 1:07we've had quite a few deep podcasts.
- 1:12We don't know you'd probably like.
- 1:13To be fair, I like going deep. But today I thought I'd share a
- 1:16little bit of something that I do with my clients that works
- 1:20really well and I don't see anyone else talking about it.
- 1:24I don't know why, I don't know why I don't see other coaches,
- 1:28other people talk about it because this is the one thing
- 1:31that helps really well with mindset shifts.
- 1:35And today I am talking about Drummore.
- 1:38Please, curiosity. What?
- 1:43Cara, what? So this podcast is all going to
- 1:46be about curiosity and how I use it within my business to coach
- 1:50my clients who have difficult relationships with food and they
- 1:56want it to feel easy. I know you're probably thinking
- 1:59What Car you've, you've definitely lost the plot.
- 2:01Now bear with me. So when I talk to people,
- 2:09there's a lot of shame around eating patterns.
- 2:15There can be a lot of secret eating.
- 2:17There can be a lot of shame around what they eat, how they
- 2:21eat, when they eat, how much they eat, what they don't eat so
- 2:25much, so much. And that can be external shame
- 2:30and it can be internalised into them.
- 2:32So that is one thing that I really want to take away from
- 2:36clients, some from people, people like, I don't want anyone
- 2:39to be ashamed of anything that they do in regarding to food.
- 2:43And we need to erase that shame. So I'm trying, I'm trying my
- 2:49best to erase it. And one thing that I do which
- 2:52helps with that is to change the lens that you look through, to
- 2:58change your view, your map of the world.
- 3:02And we have the same things come up with the same information,
- 3:07but if we look at it not through shame lens, not through another
- 3:11stick to beat yourself up with, but through a curiosity lens.
- 3:16If you were through a curiosity lens, it changes what you do,
- 3:21how you think, how you feel and the behaviours.
- 3:26So acting with curiosity is something that I say to my
- 3:29clients all the time. And this means that basically,
- 3:32right, So something's come up for you, something's happening,
- 3:35you've got a craving, you are really hungry.
- 3:40All of a sudden it's like, right, OK, let's not be like,
- 3:43oh, I shouldn't be eating. Oh, I shouldn't be this hungry.
- 3:46Let's act with curiosity. Be like, alright, what's going
- 3:49on here now? What's going on for me actually?
- 3:53Have I not eaten? Has it been five hours since
- 3:55I've eaten my breakfast? Oh yeah, probably eating some
- 3:58food then. Oh, I'm absolutely starving and
- 4:04I've just eaten my tea though. But I need to do dinner, bath
- 4:09and bed for the kids and they're feral.
- 4:14Can anyone relate? Instead of going like, oh, I
- 4:19shouldn't be hungry, I shouldn't be feeling this, be like, oh,
- 4:22actually curiosity. Oh, I actually don't really want
- 4:25to do dinner, bath and bed because the kids are all over
- 4:27the place. It's acting with curiosity.
- 4:32Curiosity did not kill the cat. It made the cat wiser, less
- 4:38shameful, and All in all better. Now, this is a really tricky
- 4:46concept to get your head around sometimes when you don't act
- 4:49with curiosity about anything else in your life, curiosity,
- 4:52it's like, oh, we, we don't do that, do we?
- 4:56But I do this quite a lot in my personal life where it's like,
- 5:00what's actually going on for this person?
- 5:03What's the environment they're in?
- 5:04What is their map and view of the world?
- 5:09And once you can see that with curiosity, you're like, that
- 5:12makes sense. Yes.
- 5:16If you do that for yourself, especially around food, it
- 5:19shifts your mindset because you no longer internalise what you
- 5:23quote UN quote, should or should not be doing.
- 5:26It's just information that you then have to process, that you
- 5:30then have to bring some conscious awareness to that you
- 5:33then have to make an informed decision with.
- 5:36So it's information that we want in the form of cravings, in the
- 5:41form of emotional dysregulation, in the form of habits, in the
- 5:46form of repeating patterns that we can then look at through a
- 5:51different lens of curiosity. Be like, what is going on here?
- 5:56What is going on here and how can I deal with it instead of
- 6:02internalising it. Be like I shouldn't be doing
- 6:03this, I shouldn't be feeling this, I should, I should be
- 6:05doing better. That keeps people stuck in the
- 6:08same patterns, in the same habits, in the same emotional
- 6:11dysregulation. And once you can see it be like,
- 6:15Oh yeah, curiosity. Oh yeah, actually, I feel this
- 6:18because of that. I don't have to feel that
- 6:21because this, because I can do this, done that in my care.
- 6:26That would be better. Not on a podcast.
- 6:28That makes sense. But curiosity is one thing that
- 6:32I really, really try and lean into with my clients because
- 6:35once you act with curiosity as well, there's no right or wrong.
- 6:40And I would say 90% of my clients have black or white
- 6:45thinking where they are right or they are wrong.
- 6:48They are on or off, they are off track or on track.
- 6:52And when you can't be right or you can't be wrong, the whole
- 6:58world opens up to you because then you decide, oh, this is
- 7:01just information. It's information that you have
- 7:04to process. It's not a stick to beat
- 7:07yourself up with. It's not something that you need
- 7:09to treat yourself with. It's not something that you need
- 7:12to celebrate. It's just information.
- 7:14And the more information you have about yourself, the better
- 7:20you can process that information.
- 7:25Once you've processed that information, brought
- 7:27consciousness awareness to it, conscious awareness to it, then
- 7:30you can make an informed decision.
- 7:33And what you do might be the same, but how you think and feel
- 7:36about it will be different. And if you're someone whoever
- 7:40presses the fuck it button, you will know that it's not easy to
- 7:46break that. But actually when you go, oh
- 7:49actually I have been out for a meal and I'm just going to have
- 7:52another dessert when I get home. Have it because you brought
- 7:55conscious awareness to it. If you then have another dessert
- 8:00and then the next day you think, oh soddy, I've had two desserts.
- 8:04I'm going to eat chocolate for breakfast.
- 8:06I'm going to not do my lunch because I'll just have whatever
- 8:11snacks there are in the in the office and then I'll have a take
- 8:16away tomorrow because you've already quote UN quote gone off
- 8:19track. That is different.
- 8:23That's different to make an informed decision through
- 8:27curiosity, through curious eyes. I'm going to give you a really
- 8:32good example of this from one of my past clients.
- 8:36She worked at home. Majority, I can't get my words
- 8:42here today. Majority of the time she worked
- 8:44at home and she had to go to the office every once in a while and
- 8:51it was a bit of a commute. It was well, you just prefer
- 8:56working from home, don't you? You just prefer working from
- 8:59home. And it was just a thing.
- 9:01Her going into the office just a faff commute was faffy.
- 9:05Logistics was logistiking and she used to not eat when she
- 9:16went to the office. And she used to take like quote,
- 9:21like quote, UN quote, like normal portions.
- 9:25And she would always end up going to the vending machines to
- 9:28get some food or she'd end up eating her food at like half 10
- 9:33or like 11. So she was starving.
- 9:37And she never, just never took enough food for her.
- 9:41And we were like, well, what's going on for you here?
- 9:44Like, what is going on? So we looked at it for her
- 9:46curious, curious eyes. And she had to have her
- 9:49breakfast earlier. She had a long commute, so
- 9:52energy expansion was higher. She was like, didn't really want
- 9:56to go to the office. So there's some sort of like,
- 10:01resistance there. There was some sort of, I don't
- 10:03really want to be doing this, but I've been made to do it.
- 10:07And there was also, like, a fear of being judged for how much she
- 10:11was eating, what she was eating. It's like, OK, well, let's put
- 10:14all that together. And that all makes sense why you
- 10:19are eating like your lunch early and you're not eating enough.
- 10:24So what can we do about that? And we talked about how to
- 10:28regulate herself. So it was actually more about
- 10:30taking snacks in that she could have at 10:30 that would provide
- 10:35her with a little break that she might have to go and warm up so
- 10:38she can go to the kitchen. So she wouldn't be in the
- 10:40office. She could go out and something
- 10:43non smelly so that she wasn't pissing people off and she
- 10:46didn't feel like she was drawing attention to herself and giving
- 10:52herself a good lunch. What actually was a portion size
- 10:55that felt good to her and also it what we did as well in the
- 11:00end as well. We gave her we asked, I asked
- 11:03her to take in more food than she needed.
- 11:05So she always always had it instead of relying on like the
- 11:08vending machine at 3. And you know what, she never ate
- 11:10it because she understood that it was like anxiety about going
- 11:15into the office, people annoying her.
- 11:17And it's she felt physiologically full from her
- 11:22lunch and satisfied. So that is how you come to this
- 11:29like an outcome through curious few curious eyes instead of
- 11:35going 0. Whenever I go to the office, I
- 11:37hate her. I hate it because I'm always
- 11:39starving. People always judge me and I
- 11:41just like, I just hate it. I'm always, I've always grabbing
- 11:44snacks on the way home from the vending machine.
- 11:46That's what I do. That's can be interpreted.
- 11:50They can be interpreted as habits.
- 11:52They're not habits. They're just something that you
- 11:53do because you haven't looked a few curious eyes.
- 11:58That was one example that worked really well.
- 12:01And you know what? She goes into the office now and
- 12:04it's not a big deal. Not a big deal to her.
- 12:07She regulates her emotions. She feels better because she's
- 12:11eaten properly, she feels fuelled and she doesn't feel
- 12:15like she's letting herself down by the age of the vending
- 12:16machine or eating her lunch at like 10:30.
- 12:20Hear what I'm saying? Another, oh another example is
- 12:26another client. He was the most typical
- 12:31emotional eater. She ate her emotions when she
- 12:34was happy, when she was sad, when she was comforting me to
- 12:36comfort, when she was bored, when like every single emotion
- 12:41was eaten. There was not a lot of emotional
- 12:46regulation going on. So one of the things that she
- 12:51really wanted to to deal with was the picking at her kids
- 13:00foods. After they had like they eaten,
- 13:04they left bits and she was like, I, she was like car.
- 13:08I always eat they're leftovers. I know I shouldn't be doing it,
- 13:11but I always do it. I was like, right, OK, so what's
- 13:13going on here? Look for curious eyes, right,
- 13:17right. What's going on right.
- 13:18So they've eaten actually, you might not think that they've
- 13:21eaten enough. You might think that they've
- 13:25eaten too much. You might overfeed them.
- 13:27You might think that actually, right, you are putting on more
- 13:31food than they need. So we we dug into that for her.
- 13:35We dug into her childhood and how she was brought up around
- 13:40food and particularly a food waste came up here and how much
- 13:48money was spent on food that came up.
- 13:52But OK, so we're building a picture up here.
- 13:54Then we came to what she she fed her kids before she fed herself.
- 13:59So it was actually, well, actually, are you a bit hungry?
- 14:01Let's do the hunger and phone and scale What?
- 14:03How physiologically hungry are you?
- 14:05She was quite hungry. I thought, right, OK, this, this
- 14:09is all making sense now. You're going to pick up their
- 14:11food because you are hungry, because you don't like food
- 14:14waste, because you don't like money to be wasted.
- 14:16And it's there, right? OK, so then let's look at those
- 14:22limiting beliefs around free waste event wasting money.
- 14:25But let's also like make sure that you're not physiologically
- 14:27hungry. She's like, Oh yeah.
- 14:29Like I know it's not a character flaw that you're eating your
- 14:32kids leftovers. It's just a whole thing that's
- 14:36like piled up one on top of the other that drives the behaviour
- 14:39of you eating your kids leftovers.
- 14:41And if we can look at it not through shame, not be like, you
- 14:44should not ever eat your kids leftovers, put them straight in
- 14:48the bin. Don't ever do it.
- 14:50Like never don't do that. We look for curious eyes and it
- 14:55all makes sense. We're all humans.
- 14:57And human behaviour makes sense in a way, like in a pattern, it
- 15:02makes sense. And once you look at it through
- 15:06different eyes, you're like, oh, yeah, that's why you do that.
- 15:09Yeah. Shall we do something different
- 15:11next time? Yeah, let's do that.
- 15:14They're just two examples of how I how I've used curious thinking
- 15:22with two of my clients. I use it all the time.
- 15:24So if you're thinking about, oh, like something's going on for
- 15:27you, you're repeating the same pattern.
- 15:29It's like, right, just take a step back.
- 15:31What is going on for you? Look through curious eyes, like
- 15:35look at the wider picture, look at the environment, look at how
- 15:38people are thinking, how people are making you feel.
- 15:41Look at what's going on for you. Look at your cycle, look at what
- 15:45you're wearing, look at how you're feeling.
- 15:46Look at a lot of things, a lot of things, and it will all make
- 15:53sense. It will fit into a puzzle and
- 15:56it's all information. Information is what we need to
- 16:01make a decision. And if you don't have any
- 16:03information, you can't make a decision.
- 16:05So information is good. We like information because then
- 16:10you can make an informed decision.
- 16:12Cravings are information. They are something like, right,
- 16:17OK, it's something is trying to tell me something.
- 16:20What is it? And this takes a little bit of a
- 16:24while to feel into. I'm not going to lie, takes a
- 16:26little bit of a while to feel into.
- 16:27But wouldn't you be like, Oh yeah, it's trying to tell me
- 16:30that, right. OK, do you need to do that?
- 16:33Don't need to be. I need to go and do something
- 16:35else. And once you act with curiosity,
- 16:39you take the shame away because it's just information.
- 16:43You're not making it make anything about you.
- 16:46It's not your identity. It's not something that you have
- 16:49to do. It's not something that you
- 16:51religiously do. It's not you.
- 16:53It's information. Information that is just one
- 16:58little snippet of things that I do in my coach and I thought I,
- 17:02well, I really wanted to share it with you today because it's
- 17:04come up a lot recently. I don't know why other people
- 17:07don't talk about it. Curiosity honestly shifts the
- 17:11mindset and it removes shame. It removes like loads.
- 17:15Oh, it's just fantastic. Just really good if you can look
- 17:18through things with curious eyes, like so good.
- 17:24If you want to look at curious through curious eyes, your
- 17:29relationship with food, then I am the woman to help you with
- 17:31that because I can coach you through it.
- 17:36And that's what I do in my weekly calls in my 1 to one

- 17:43help heal your relationship with food and it is £199 per month
- 17:48for three months. You get 1 to 1 calls every
- 17:51single week. So literally we talk through
- 17:53this, it's like right, OK, so what's going on for you when
- 17:55you're eating your kids leftovers?
- 17:56What have you done before? What have you done 10 minutes
- 17:58before? What have you done half an hour
- 17:59before? How hungry are you?
- 18:01We work that through. We do that for three months,
- 18:03then for two months we do calls every other week and then the
- 18:07last month is just WhatsApp support.
