- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, custo millennials

- 1:04Speaker 2: our Friday episodes where we get our little team together

- 1:11Speaker 2: This week, Miss j S. Greech is going to be
- 1:13Speaker 2: sharing her favorite money wins. Miss beck Sayed is back
- 1:16Speaker 2: and she has a couple of broke tips for us.
- 1:19Speaker 2: We're going to be talking this week about a juicy
- 1:22Speaker 2: money dilemma. This week, we're going to be answering a
- 1:24Speaker 2: question about how to be smart with your money when
- 1:27Speaker 2: you're single. And we're going to be unpacking something that
- 1:29Speaker 2: you slid into our DMS about this week. We're talking
- 1:32Speaker 2: about what to do when you've got concerns about your
- 1:34Speaker 2: partner's spending habits. Before we get there, though, Beck, Jess,
- 1:41Speaker 2: how are your weeks?
- 1:42Speaker 4: Jess, you go first, Thank you.
- 1:44Speaker 5: My wik's been good, nothing exciting. I've been watching a
- 1:47Speaker 5: lot of beame rush TikTok.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah. I sent you the first video that came up
- 1:50Speaker 2: on you. Yeah, and I was like, I'm working on
- 1:52Speaker 2: the algorithm for you.
- 1:54Speaker 5: I have a curator. It's like every second video and
- 1:56Speaker 5: I'm living for and all I can think about is
- 1:57Speaker 5: how much I would have bodied being a sorority girl,
- 2:00Speaker 5: because they do like all these cute themes for each day.
- 2:03Speaker 2: And Jess was actually born to be American, Yeah, in
- 2:08Speaker 2: like the non offensive way yeah no no, no, no no,
- 2:13Speaker 2: but like in the Deep South sorority. Yeah, Jess was
- 2:19Speaker 2: meant to be born into a billionaire household so that
- 2:21Speaker 2: she could like seem everything not work, like just I.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Would have been a great rich housewife. Yeah, I'm okay
- 2:29Speaker 5: with that. Work towards that work towards.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not impossible.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I just know that you would have been living your
- 2:33Speaker 2: best life. Like I just know that if I said
- 2:36Speaker 2: to Jess tomorrow, we're going to get up, We're going
- 2:39Speaker 2: to go to Starbucks, her ears would already be pricked. Yes,
- 2:42Speaker 2: we're going to Target. We're going to walk around Target.
- 2:46Speaker 2: We're going to go to pilates. At lunch time, we're
- 2:48Speaker 2: going to go get cobb salads and some Crispy diet coke.
- 2:51Speaker 2: She'd be like, I'll do anything.
- 2:54Speaker 5: It's fun. Whenever we go to the US for a
- 2:55Speaker 5: work trip, it's like we had to cosplay it for Like.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Do you know those TikTok where it's like they show
- 3:03Speaker 4: the college girls like they're about to go to college
- 3:05Speaker 4: and they're like, my name's.
- 3:09Speaker 5: And I'm going all this.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I can see that for you. I don't want anything.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Else for you.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I just want that to come to fruition. So if
- 3:21Speaker 2: there is a billionaire listening that would like to adopt
- 3:24Speaker 2: Jess so she can live her best American sorority girl life, yes.
- 3:28Speaker 5: I'll be like maturity student already takes thirty.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Scho with skin like that, baby girl, you know what
- 3:37Speaker 2: you could do instead Mormon Housewife.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Did you say that they're making a reality show?
- 3:43Speaker 2: No, but I want to watch it.
- 3:44Speaker 5: What is it The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives or
- 3:46Speaker 5: something like that, say less less in the conversation.
- 3:50Speaker 2: We'll have this conversation later. We've just piped up Jess
- 3:53Speaker 2: and made her believe that things that are never going
- 3:56Speaker 2: to happen might happen. So I love that.
- 3:58Speaker 5: There.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Cow's your week, my week, My week, my week.
- 4:01Speaker 4: I got back from Sydney.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Birthday month.
- 4:04Speaker 4: It's birthday month. It is a bit of a shame.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I do feel like the birthday magic's wearing off. It's
- 4:08Speaker 4: now like midway through August, so I'm like.
- 4:10Speaker 5: You're right at the end of July, which makes it hard.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like, oh how much can I stretch this?
- 4:16Speaker 5: You know?
- 4:16Speaker 2: But I'm still trying. So it really feels like the month. Yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 2: we're only I think true. Okay, it does not exist.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's probably true. And once this is over,
- 4:25Speaker 4: then we've got Halloween, we've got Christmas. Like the magic just.
- 4:29Speaker 5: No, get it, you get it.
- 4:31Speaker 4: But no, my week's been really good. It's been really
- 4:34Speaker 4: I'm still trying to like look for a house so
- 4:36Speaker 4: anyone anywhere out there. I think at this point I'm
- 4:39Speaker 4: only going north side. I'm a beggar and I can't
- 4:42Speaker 4: be a chooser. So if anyone has also, she's being
- 4:44Speaker 4: a chooser by refusing to go east side.
- 4:47Speaker 5: What's outside or west side?
- 4:49Speaker 4: Yes, that's true. I think I will still be a
- 4:51Speaker 4: choosing but no, if anything comes up, but I'm like, hey,
- 4:53Speaker 4: Idlberg doesn't sound so bad, then maybe that's still north side.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I have no idea if we from the west, so
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'll go west. Geography is just not for me.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Well, I'll go anywhere. So that's that's my current situation.
- 5:06Speaker 4: So the weeks, Yeah, it's been, but otherwise it's been good.
- 5:07Speaker 4: What about you good?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Mine has been decidedly more boring than yours. I feel
- 5:13Speaker 2: like I've finally got into the daycare group, like I
- 5:16Speaker 2: am loving it, and I feel like we should talk
- 5:17Speaker 2: about this because I feel like so many mums on
- 5:20Speaker 2: TikTok and Instagram they're always talking about like, oh my gosh,
- 5:23Speaker 2: I feel so guilty going back to work, or I
- 5:25Speaker 2: feel so guilty that my kid's in daycare. Harvey loves it,
- 5:30Speaker 2: like he is having the best time ever. So they
- 5:32Speaker 2: have this little app where they upload photos throughout the
- 5:35Speaker 2: day and tell you what they're up to, and I'm
- 5:38Speaker 2: just like, these are things that I just don't have
- 5:40Speaker 2: the brain capacity for. Like he's doing all these sensory
- 5:43Speaker 2: activities and like last week they did baby Olympics for real.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Turns out maybe our educator is a really great storyteller,
- 5:54Speaker 2: because like the written thing said, oh my gosh, the
- 5:56Speaker 2: kids put on a spectacular performance today they were doing
- 6:00Speaker 2: artistic gymnastics, and Harvey really shone through. And then there's
- 6:05Speaker 2: just this picture of my baby who cannot sit up,
- 6:08Speaker 2: laying on a mat looking like a little sweet potato
- 6:12Speaker 2: holding a rainbow ribbon rattle, and that's his artistics, and
- 6:20Speaker 2: like I mean the other kids, because obviously the app
- 6:22Speaker 2: gets updated with all the kids they're like doing like
- 6:24Speaker 2: climbing activities and like running races and stuff, and it
- 6:27Speaker 2: was just so wholesome, and I just know that he's
- 6:30Speaker 2: having the best time while I get to come back
- 6:32Speaker 2: to work and be my best self. And I just
- 6:34Speaker 2: think it's so good and we need to talk more
- 6:37Speaker 2: about this, because like my week has been made knowing
- 6:39Speaker 2: that he's had a good week at daycare. And then
- 6:41Speaker 2: I come home and I'm like, tell me about your
- 6:43Speaker 2: baby day, like, what did you do? Obviously he can't
- 6:46Speaker 2: respond yet. I'm not that delusional, but I like go
- 6:49Speaker 2: through the app and I'm like, oh, you did this,
- 6:51Speaker 2: and then did you have this? And oh you had
- 6:53Speaker 2: a bottle at this time, and you know, I tell
- 6:55Speaker 2: him about my day and I'm like, this is going
- 6:57Speaker 2: to work for us. I really like it. So yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 2: a bit boring back at work, back in the office,
- 7:03Speaker 2: so I feel like I've spent a few days in
- 7:05Speaker 2: the office more than what I would usually, But so good,
- 7:09Speaker 2: so good.
- 7:10Speaker 4: You gotta keep your sanity. You got to talk to people.
- 7:11Speaker 4: You're in age.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I feel like you do. And I mean, if you
- 7:14Speaker 2: want to stay home, great, like fantastic. It's different horses
- 7:17Speaker 2: for different courses. But I just knew this was going
- 7:20Speaker 2: to be part of the narrative. And I have had
- 7:22Speaker 2: a few messages from people because I've posted on my
- 7:24Speaker 2: Instagram like Harvey is like daycare fit or whatever. They're like,
- 7:28Speaker 2: oh my gosh, how are you going with daycare? Do
- 7:30Speaker 2: you feel guilty? And I'm like, hold up, why is
- 7:31Speaker 2: that part of the Yeah, why is that part of
- 7:33Speaker 2: the narrative? Why would I feel guilty? Do you know
- 7:35Speaker 2: how expensive daycare is? Like if I turned around to you,
- 7:38Speaker 2: Beck and said I'm spending one hundred and ninety two
- 7:41Speaker 2: dollars a day on you, You'd be like blessed.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, yeah, I would be like, do you feel guilty?
- 7:46Speaker 2: Well no, no, So I just yeah. I think it's
- 7:50Speaker 2: important to talk about because it's meant that I am
- 7:52Speaker 2: so much happier at work as well, knowing that he's
- 7:56Speaker 2: happy and having a really good time. But that's not
- 7:59Speaker 2: what today's about. Today's about our community. So let's dive
- 8:02Speaker 2: straight in, Jess, I saw the money Wins thread this
- 8:05Speaker 2: week and there were some good ones. What have you
- 8:07Speaker 2: pulled out to share?
- 8:08Speaker 5: Alrighty, My first one this week comes from Natasha who
- 8:12Speaker 5: said she's currently putting up curtains throughout her house. She
- 8:15Speaker 5: got a quote and they said for one room, a
- 8:18Speaker 5: singular room, it was going to cost her over twelve
- 8:20Speaker 5: hundred dollars.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Crazy.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Who new curtains were so expensive?
- 8:23Speaker 2: Not me, I know, we did remember when we got
- 8:25Speaker 2: that quote for.
- 8:25Speaker 5: The the office, and then well we did a bit
- 8:27Speaker 5: of a Natasha. We decided to do it ourselves, which
- 8:30Speaker 5: is exactly what she did. She went to Spotlight. They
- 8:32Speaker 5: had a forty percent off sale. She got all of
- 8:34Speaker 5: her curtains for six hundred bucks.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Money win, money Win. We did basically the same thing,
- 8:39Speaker 2: but we got them through Freedom and we just installed
- 8:42Speaker 2: them ourselves.
- 8:42Speaker 4: What do they do, Like, we're just like, you know
- 8:44Speaker 4: those sheer.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Curtains y, Yeah, Like it was so expensive.
- 8:49Speaker 4: And they like they just hang them, but you could just.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I'm assuming they also make them like they hang them,
- 8:57Speaker 2: And I mean you do get the extra bonus of
- 8:59Speaker 2: having them like trimmed to the right size. Sure, we
- 9:02Speaker 2: did that ourselves. Have you met Jess. She's now the
- 9:04Speaker 2: proud owner of a sewing machine. She can do anything.
- 9:07Speaker 5: Crafty queens. Next, even of money win from Anthea, who said,
- 9:10Speaker 5: money win. We've built a chicken coop out the back.
- 9:13Speaker 5: This one's for you back. We had stuff laying around
- 9:15Speaker 5: on our block. We only were forty dollars out of
- 9:17Speaker 5: pocket for lax and basic stuff like screws and buckets.
- 9:20Speaker 5: They already had the space in the yard and they
- 9:22Speaker 5: repurposed a aviary that their dad had built twenty eight
- 9:26Speaker 5: years ago. Oh my gosh, very wholesome. And there is
- 9:29Speaker 5: a photo of the chicken coop. I love photo pictures
- 9:32Speaker 5: a whole house literally like you could.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Is it in the north boat. Probably there's going to
- 9:38Speaker 2: be an issue if it's not.
- 9:42Speaker 5: A chicken coop.
- 9:43Speaker 2: No worries.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Next, even of money win from Alicia, who said, I
- 9:46Speaker 5: bought a very old, very burnt le crust pot for
- 9:49Speaker 5: anyone who doesn't know le cruse ah like super bougie,
- 9:53Speaker 5: very expensive, like four hundred dollars pots, but they're very
- 9:56Speaker 5: well made, their cast iron. They last you a lifetime.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I really, but I can't justify it.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I agree they're stunning.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I don't do enough like of that baking to get
- 10:05Speaker 2: the proper lucrat like I just don't have. Like if
- 10:10Speaker 2: you said, Victoria's a fry pan that you'd use every
- 10:12Speaker 2: night for dinner while cooking yourmaly spoons, I'd be like
- 10:14Speaker 2: slate can invest. No, not a.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Dutch And I think they do other stuff, but I'm
- 10:19Speaker 5: not sure anyway. At least she found this one for
- 10:20Speaker 5: fifty bucks on Facebook marketplace. She cleaned it up with
- 10:23Speaker 5: a lot of scrubbing and soaking and it looks perfect now.
- 10:26Speaker 5: She put in a photo and it was ninety percent
- 10:28Speaker 5: off of the normal retail price.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Oh look at her.
- 10:31Speaker 5: What a good job she did.
- 10:32Speaker 4: That is so good.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Do you know what this woman? Woman after my own heart? Really?
- 10:37Speaker 2: I think that she would like my cleaning stories highlight
- 10:40Speaker 2: on my Instagram because I'm a cleaner at heart. Have
- 10:43Speaker 2: you seen me in a canva ive and cleaner?
- 10:46Speaker 5: She loves to scrub.
- 10:47Speaker 2: I love it. Do you think I'm joking? Beck? No,
- 10:51Speaker 2: after the show, I'm going to show you my highlights.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I've seen you.
- 10:54Speaker 4: I've seen you. If I'm in a room with you
- 10:56Speaker 4: and a can of oven spray, I know that I'm
- 10:57Speaker 4: not being seen.
- 10:59Speaker 2: That's real tops and only spray oven spray outside.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Beck, Oh my gosh, all ranks.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I let you win.
- 11:05Speaker 5: From Matilda who said last night she got to see
- 11:08Speaker 5: Beauty in the Beast with a friend and they only
- 11:09Speaker 5: paid twenty four dollars per ticket because they won the lottery,
- 11:13Speaker 5: it's definitely worth entering the lotteries. So I'm getting there
- 11:17Speaker 5: with the context. It's definitely worth entering the lotteries. On
- 11:19Speaker 5: the Today ticks app, there's one for Wicked two. You
- 11:21Speaker 5: might remember me saying a while ago I was trying
- 11:23Speaker 5: to win tickets. Wicked didn't win sadly, but.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I never saw Wicked buy.
- 11:28Speaker 5: You can often enter last minute lottery when they have
- 11:30Speaker 5: extra seats left in the theater. They'll sometimes do it
- 11:33Speaker 5: like the stage door, but apps like today Ticks also
- 11:35Speaker 5: do it and you enter and you just go in
- 11:37Speaker 5: the for a chance to be able to buy like
- 11:39Speaker 5: a really cheap ticket. So in this case, they were
- 11:41Speaker 5: doing twenty four dollar tickets to see Beauty in the
- 11:42Speaker 5: Beast musical.
- 11:43Speaker 2: That's so cool. I feel like they're so expensive nowadays.
- 11:45Speaker 5: I was going to say, I feel like the ride
- 11:47Speaker 5: at the back seats are still like eighty ninety bucks normally,
- 11:49Speaker 5: and you know, up into the hundreds depending on how
- 11:51Speaker 5: close you get, So twenty four dollars is still my god.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Well, I was just thinking, wait, she won the lottery
- 11:58Speaker 2: and still had to pay.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Someone writes in one day, is like my money win
- 12:03Speaker 4: is I won the powerball?
- 12:04Speaker 2: My god. I had a client. I had a client,
- 12:07Speaker 2: do that, not a pre existing client. This is a
- 12:09Speaker 2: number of years ago. They came to me and said
- 12:11Speaker 2: I need financial advice, and I was like, great, no
- 12:13Speaker 2: worries come my way. And I was thinking like, oh,
- 12:15Speaker 2: this is probably like, you know, going to be a
- 12:18Speaker 2: smaller client, because you know, you have in your head
- 12:20Speaker 2: like maybe what a client's going to be like after
- 12:23Speaker 2: you read their fact find and like a few details
- 12:25Speaker 2: and they had omitted that. I was thinking, okay, Uni student,
- 12:28Speaker 2: like probably like we're going to talk about budget and
- 12:30Speaker 2: cash flow. And she's like, so I won like five
- 12:32Speaker 2: million dollars And I was like, sorry, what she's like?
- 12:35Speaker 2: And I just I don't really know what to do.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And I was like, this is very exciting. Who knows?
- 12:41Speaker 2: And she's like, well, a while ago you said on
- 12:44Speaker 2: a podcast like you don't have to tell anyone, so
- 12:46Speaker 2: I haven't told anyone. And I was like, oh, okay,
- 12:50Speaker 2: so you claimed the money yet, And I'm thinking that
- 12:52Speaker 2: maybe it's a joke. Any Way, full financial Plan. It
- 12:55Speaker 2: was not a joke. She didn't end up telling her parents,
- 12:58Speaker 2: doing some incredible things for her family. She donated some money,
- 13:01Speaker 2: she set herself up full life, but imagine winning five meal. Yeah,
- 13:08Speaker 2: you guys about what I would do, and like she
- 13:11Speaker 2: was most worried at that time. Sorry, I know that
- 13:14Speaker 2: the person who one listens to the show still so
- 13:18Speaker 2: hi Congress, but she was so worried in that meeting
- 13:21Speaker 2: with me. She's like do I have to pay you now?
- 13:24Speaker 2: Or like can I pay you later because I don't
- 13:26Speaker 2: have the money now, Like I can't pay for advice now.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, this is fine, this is fine,
- 13:31Speaker 2: no worries, You're good for it. Imagine being like, I
- 13:34Speaker 2: know I have five million dollars coming, but I'm worried
- 13:38Speaker 2: about you know, a three thousand dollars invoice. Like I
- 13:41Speaker 2: get it, yeah, but holy moly.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I was like, how does that feel to live my dream?
- 13:45Speaker 5: I literally completely well speaking of living the dreams and
- 13:48Speaker 5: quit moved.
- 13:48Speaker 2: To America totally.
- 13:50Speaker 5: I'd becoming a I'd be my own rich, stay at homehouse.
- 13:52Speaker 5: You're like, I'm moving to Utah for the leader might
- 13:55Speaker 5: have been from Amanda talking about random crazy things. Apparently
- 13:58Speaker 5: Amazon Prime is filming a movie on the Goldie with
- 14:02Speaker 5: Mark Warwerk, and they asked if they could do some
- 14:04Speaker 5: filming on their cane farm. They pay them twenty grand
- 14:09Speaker 5: for three or four days of filming on their property.
- 14:11Speaker 2: You can have my house.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Literally, god crazy?
- 14:15Speaker 4: Is there any like negotiations? She's probably didn't mention or
- 14:18Speaker 4: they would just like, hey, we'll give you no idea.
- 14:20Speaker 5: I mean, if someone said to me, Hey, twenty grand
- 14:22Speaker 5: to use it, I'd be like buy all me.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, do you want me to clean the house first?
- 14:25Speaker 5: Literally, I'll do that. I'll sweep the fields, I'll do
- 14:28Speaker 5: whatever I've got to do the field.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Absolutely, like your cane field is going to feature in
- 14:33Speaker 4: a movie with.
- 14:34Speaker 5: You imagine seeing the movie being like kids, that's my cane.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Literally, that's They could pay me three dollars and I'd
- 14:41Speaker 4: still do that. That's really really cool.
- 14:43Speaker 5: So fun. And the last I have money in from
- 14:45Speaker 5: myself And a little reminder, it's after pay Day starting
- 14:48Speaker 5: today after pay Day's sales have been going on all
- 14:50Speaker 5: week though, which I have been taking advantage of. But
- 14:53Speaker 5: I wanted to buy something online. Actually, this jacket that
- 14:56Speaker 5: I'm wearing right now, I wanted to buy.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Already complimented on that it's very cute, but like it
- 15:01Speaker 2: looks very Garney, which is obviously very do you know
- 15:04Speaker 2: what you would love Garney. I'm gonna show you after
- 15:06Speaker 2: it's expensive. It's a gateway. You're not going to appreciate
- 15:09Speaker 2: me for showing you, but you will appreciate the fashion.
- 15:12Speaker 2: But it looks very Garney, which is expensive. And then
- 15:15Speaker 2: just was like, huh, I did a jess.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Yeah it's from Glassons Fan. I was wondering, but I
- 15:19Speaker 5: wanted to buy it online it was sold out and
- 15:21Speaker 5: after pay sale was only online. But I went into
- 15:24Speaker 5: the store anyway, and I just said, hey, like, I
- 15:26Speaker 5: saw this jacket online but it was on sale online,
- 15:28Speaker 5: but it's not on sale here. And they said, oh,
- 15:30Speaker 5: we can just price match it for you so I
- 15:32Speaker 5: could get my size. So if something you want is
- 15:35Speaker 5: a part of the sales, but it maybe is sold
- 15:36Speaker 5: out in your size or your color or whatever and
- 15:39Speaker 5: they have it in store, it's worth coming in store
- 15:40Speaker 5: and just trying to see if you can get a
- 15:42Speaker 5: price match, because I think a lot of the times
- 15:44Speaker 5: the stores will be happy to just have the sale
- 15:46Speaker 5: because a lot of people are probably not shopping in
- 15:48Speaker 5: store this week because they're using the after pay sales instead.
- 15:50Speaker 5: And reminder, you don't need to use after pay to
- 15:52Speaker 5: take advantage of the after pay sales because I've never
- 15:54Speaker 5: had after pay. I just want to take advantage of
- 15:56Speaker 5: the sales.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I was about to say oft
- 16:00Speaker 2: and they'll have a discount code for you to use
- 16:02Speaker 2: for after pay day that's like after pay day or something,
- 16:05Speaker 2: and you can use it even though your payment method
- 16:07Speaker 2: is not after pay, because it makes the sense, right,
- 16:11Speaker 2: like it makes sense for the company to make the
- 16:13Speaker 2: most of people who also don't have after paid they
- 16:16Speaker 2: might want to give that a crack.
- 16:17Speaker 5: They literally just branded it with their name. It's like
- 16:20Speaker 5: smart mouk. But you don't need to use it at all.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Seeh I also have a money when that I want
- 16:24Speaker 2: to share is that, Okay, please do this. One's for
- 16:27Speaker 2: the Kindle goalies out there. So I currently have Kindle Unlimited,
- 16:31Speaker 2: and if you have Kindle Unlimited, you know that you
- 16:34Speaker 2: don't get every single book that you might want to read. Anyway,
- 16:38Speaker 2: Kindle app is having a massive sale, and lots of
- 16:40Speaker 2: the books that I want to read at the moment
- 16:42Speaker 2: are like eighty to ninety percent off, so they're only
- 16:45Speaker 2: costing a couple of dollars to add to my Kindle.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So I've gone through added a heap of them and
- 16:50Speaker 2: I'm really excited about it. But that didn't come from me.
- 16:52Speaker 2: That actually came I was in the office yesterday and
- 16:55Speaker 2: the Zella girls were like, they're Kindle giralies. Like Maddie
- 16:59Speaker 2: in the office, she reads like three books a week.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I don't know how she's like a speed reader and
- 17:05Speaker 2: she doesn't even use the dyslexic font jesslexic fon Oh
- 17:08Speaker 2: my gosh, yes, what's that? Oh side note, So on
- 17:14Speaker 2: your kindle you can like change the fonts and like
- 17:17Speaker 2: how it's viewed and like the font size and stuff. Right, yes, yes,
- 17:21Speaker 2: but you're gonna love this, Jess. So there is a
- 17:23Speaker 2: font called open dyslexic and you don't have to be
- 17:27Speaker 2: dyslexic to use it. And I'm obsessed with it because
- 17:29Speaker 2: it's basically been crafted to be easier on your eyes
- 17:33Speaker 2: to flow along the words and read quicker. So I
- 17:37Speaker 2: use it and it makes my kindle experience just much nicer,
- 17:40Speaker 2: much easier. We got into this debate in the office
- 17:43Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago because we have an internal
- 17:46Speaker 2: we have book club at work. We're very cool, thanks
- 17:48Speaker 2: for asking, and we're currently reading something. I say, we'll
- 17:52Speaker 2: try the font that I'm obsessed with, and all the
- 17:53Speaker 2: girls were like, that looks like clown font does not
- 17:58Speaker 2: look legible, Victoria, and I was like, give it a crack.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Went in yesterday and Georgia was like, Victoria, I'm really sorry,
- 18:05Speaker 2: but like this is the best font ever, I'm reading
- 18:07Speaker 2: so much quicker. It is so good, so give it
- 18:09Speaker 2: a try. It's already on your kindle, like you don't
- 18:12Speaker 2: have to download or do anything, but it makes it
- 18:14Speaker 2: so much quicker. And that's not what I came here
- 18:16Speaker 2: to tell you. It came here to tell you that
- 18:17Speaker 2: lots of books are cheap right now.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Excellent.
- 18:20Speaker 4: We love that.
- 18:20Speaker 5: I can't wait to have a look.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Would you like some broke tips though, because we've taken
- 18:24Speaker 2: over this segment.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Hey, no, that's quite all right. I'll be very quick.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Don't mind me. I'm just going to read you two
- 18:31Speaker 4: from the community. One for myself.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Well I didn't see that come yeah, I had sort
- 18:35Speaker 2: of changed it off a little bit. Okay.
- 18:37Speaker 4: So the first one comes from a friend of mine.
- 18:40Speaker 4: I posted on my story your girlfriend, if you're no,
- 18:43Speaker 4: not my girlfriend, this time?
- 18:44Speaker 2: Not my girlfriend. I like how she here, he always
- 18:45Speaker 2: says this time because we all know, we always.
- 18:49Speaker 4: We all know. No, she's in the UK, so the
- 18:51Speaker 4: time zone makes it very hard to ask her before
- 18:54Speaker 4: I come in here in a panic, what do I
- 18:56Speaker 4: do because she's currently asleep?
- 18:58Speaker 2: But wake up, it's broke tip time.
- 19:01Speaker 4: So this one comes from Jacinta who says, buy upsized
- 19:03Speaker 4: am Pole fuel vouchers on shop back seven percent off,
- 19:07Speaker 4: then scan your Woolies card for points. Okay, Queen, that
- 19:11Speaker 4: sounds like a great idea, not.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Just that's genius. You're like hacking the system. You get
- 19:16Speaker 2: a better discount on fuel, do you reckon? You could
- 19:19Speaker 2: also use your like supermarket discount, I reckon, like you
- 19:23Speaker 2: stack them triple whamm it, you could stack them, oh,
- 19:27Speaker 2: discount stacking.
- 19:28Speaker 5: There's lots of upsized cash back this week with after
- 19:30Speaker 5: Payday too, so like, have a look at your favorite
- 19:32Speaker 5: brands and stuff. Because I got something on the Iconic
- 19:34Speaker 5: it was twenty cent cash back, So I was like.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I actually bought something. It was for work. I
- 19:39Speaker 2: bought something on the Adobe website and I actually got
- 19:42Speaker 2: fifty percent cash back on shot back. Amazing, Wow, fifty
- 19:46Speaker 2: isn't that good and do expensive?
- 19:48Speaker 4: Yeah it is.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I was like money win because I actually had to
- 19:52Speaker 2: purchase it. It wasn't like I said to read. Yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 2: I had to purchase some Adobe pdafreeder for work, which
- 19:58Speaker 2: was not that sexy. But then when I got fifty
- 20:00Speaker 2: business cash back, I was like, Okay, so that's now
- 20:02Speaker 2: my money money.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Wow. Anyway, sorry story there, No, don't be sorry at all.
- 20:10Speaker 4: The next one comes from Bex. And now I just
- 20:12Speaker 4: want to preface this by saying that this person did
- 20:14Speaker 4: have permission to do this. So the office next door
- 20:17Speaker 4: I'm assuming to their office had to clear out, and
- 20:19Speaker 4: this person dumpster dove and sold items on Marketplace and
- 20:23Speaker 4: just got a free hundred fifty bucks, which is really
- 20:25Speaker 4: good because sometimes we do that here at this office,
- 20:27Speaker 4: and like we're not throwing out like old broken lounges,
- 20:32Speaker 4: like we're throwing out office chairs and desks that we
- 20:35Speaker 4: don't use anymore and just everything like key cups, all
- 20:38Speaker 4: these things.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Really put it on Facebook Marketplace, Well.
- 20:41Speaker 4: That's what you do if you're doing it for your
- 20:42Speaker 4: own house. But if it's like an office clear out,
- 20:44Speaker 4: which is what was happening here, and what does happen
- 20:45Speaker 4: in this office too, no one's going through.
- 20:48Speaker 2: It's a picture of it, like and say, we're gonna
- 20:50Speaker 2: put all of this outside, and it's at this location.
- 20:53Speaker 2: You can come and take it from, you know, near
- 20:55Speaker 2: the dumpster or whatever. I just hate the idea that
- 20:58Speaker 2: it's all going to waste.
- 21:00Speaker 4: But yeah, I think if it's like a big company
- 21:02Speaker 4: where there's like so many people and the person in
- 21:05Speaker 4: charge isn't going to be doing that. Ye, they're just like.
- 21:07Speaker 2: But if you if I did for our office, we
- 21:09Speaker 2: recently packed up one of our Zella officers and we
- 21:12Speaker 2: put so much stuff on Facebook marketplace because I was like,
- 21:15Speaker 2: I can't imagine throwing it out obviously, I don't want
- 21:18Speaker 2: to put it into storage, Like it just feels so
- 21:20Speaker 2: wasteful totally, and like it technically could have been sold,
- 21:25Speaker 2: Like I definitely could have made money from it. But
- 21:27Speaker 2: you know, when you want something to just move, I'm like,
- 21:29Speaker 2: I know if I put this like set of bookcases
- 21:32Speaker 2: up for free, someone's going to go that's a money
- 21:35Speaker 2: win and come and collect it that same day. Like
- 21:37Speaker 2: this stuff moves. Definitely offer it because like even like
- 21:41Speaker 2: desk chairs and stuff, like if you're in a share so.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Expensive, I'm like, five hundred dollars isn't like crazy.
- 21:50Speaker 2: This woman she's been complaining. I'm calling her out publicly now.
- 21:55Speaker 2: She has been complaining for what would you say, twelve months?
- 22:00Speaker 5: I worked at the company, two years, three years.
- 22:03Speaker 2: She's like, I don't have a good desk set up
- 22:05Speaker 2: at home, Like I don't have a good desk chair.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I don't have a desk. I really want one of
- 22:09Speaker 2: those standing desks. I've said I'll pay for it. I'm like,
- 22:16Speaker 2: I will buy that for you. Not only will I
- 22:18Speaker 2: buy it for you, just put it on my credit card.
- 22:21Speaker 2: You've got the details. Have you done it? Are you
- 22:24Speaker 2: still complaining about it?
- 22:26Speaker 4: I'm just going.
- 22:28Speaker 2: To get to a point where I just send it
- 22:30Speaker 2: to her house and it's not going to be what
- 22:32Speaker 2: she wants because she won't tell me what she wants.
- 22:35Speaker 2: But I'll out the amount of money this woman spends
- 22:40Speaker 2: it the chiropractor significantly what a new desk would compay
- 22:46Speaker 2: for a.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Desk by now true, which is like an imagine the
- 22:49Speaker 5: way would.
- 22:49Speaker 2: The fun in that bay?
- 22:51Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, I imagine with a little treadmill. Do you
- 22:53Speaker 4: think you'd be one of those?
- 22:59Speaker 5: Sometimes I try. I put my laptop on the there's
- 23:01Speaker 5: like a bar for your hands. Sometimes I balance the laptop,
- 23:05Speaker 5: but it's very it's dangerous game.
- 23:06Speaker 2: And sometimes you zoomer and she's like wobbling and you're like, oh,
- 23:09Speaker 2: she's on the walking treadmill. I actually laughed so much
- 23:13Speaker 2: because she even has a spare room in her house
- 23:17Speaker 2: Beck for a study to go that is waiting for
- 23:20Speaker 2: this desk that she still hasn't order.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Maybe do it right before July.
- 23:24Speaker 2: So that you she leaves this office one do you
- 23:28Speaker 2: want let's order it.
- 23:29Speaker 5: All the gear? No idea anyway? Tip?
- 23:34Speaker 4: Oh yes, okay. So my one is also I just
- 23:36Speaker 4: want to shout out to my friend Amy who also
- 23:39Speaker 4: did the same thing, because I don't want them to
- 23:41Speaker 4: think that I'm stealing their idea. But I can't why
- 23:44Speaker 4: I had.
- 23:44Speaker 2: To disclaim it before. I was like, I didn't come
- 23:46Speaker 2: up with the kindle thing Maddie in the office did.
- 23:48Speaker 5: Sorry credit where credit is you?
- 23:50Speaker 4: And I know that this is one that we've probably
- 23:53Speaker 4: mentioned before about like you know, like house sitting, pet sitting,
- 23:55Speaker 4: all this kind of stuff. But my broke tip is
- 23:57Speaker 4: have a look, especially if you're in a situation like
- 24:00Speaker 4: where you're kind of like maybe needing to move. I
- 24:03Speaker 4: guess it's more for if you have the time, if
- 24:05Speaker 4: you have the luxury of time, and you do have
- 24:08Speaker 4: the option to kind of like go into a share
- 24:10Speaker 4: house or rent your own house or whatever, but it
- 24:12Speaker 4: could also help people who really are an urgent need
- 24:15Speaker 4: of you know, how accommodation. There are websites where you
- 24:18Speaker 4: can house sit for like long periods of time, and
- 24:23Speaker 4: I think that there are some that actually pay you
- 24:25Speaker 4: as well, so you get free accommodation. Sometimes you are
- 24:27Speaker 4: actually paid and you're just in someone else's house and
- 24:30Speaker 4: you're you know, obviously I think you need if you're
- 24:33Speaker 4: going to like register a on a website for other
- 24:36Speaker 4: people to find you, you do need some credentials or something.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Police checkers like that.
- 24:40Speaker 2: We've used one of those websites before when Steve and
- 24:42Speaker 2: I have gone on holiday because I don't like putting
- 24:45Speaker 2: my pets in categories yeah and or like the doggery
- 24:48Speaker 2: or whatever it is. And so they do have police checks,
- 24:51Speaker 2: like they all checked, and they often have really good
- 24:53Speaker 2: reviews so you can see what other pet parents have said,
- 24:55Speaker 2: like oh, Beck actually left the house so clean and
- 24:58Speaker 2: my pets are really happy, and that makes you like
- 25:00Speaker 2: feel a lot better. Yes, But then there's usually an
- 25:02Speaker 2: interview process too, so like you might come to my
- 25:04Speaker 2: place for a coffee, meet the pets, and then I
- 25:06Speaker 2: get a feel for you and then I go, yeah,
- 25:08Speaker 2: it should be great, so like it's not just like
- 25:10Speaker 2: a random coming into your house. I don't feel no,
- 25:12Speaker 2: totally so I think, Yeah, if you're in a position
- 25:15Speaker 2: like myself, or you just need housing, or you just
- 25:17Speaker 2: want to save a buck, try out house sitting. I
- 25:20Speaker 2: feel like that's a really good one, but I kind
- 25:22Speaker 2: of want to I don't know if this is building
- 25:24Speaker 2: on it or just questioning it. I feel like it
- 25:26Speaker 2: would low keep the genius even if you have accommodation
- 25:30Speaker 2: to house it over winter. Oh yeah, and like so
- 25:33Speaker 2: that you're not paying your electricity bill or your game brand,
- 25:39Speaker 2: go live in someone else's house, use their heater, get
- 25:44Speaker 2: paid for that privilege. Turn off the heater at home.
- 25:47Speaker 4: That's such a great idea. Or if you want it.
- 25:48Speaker 4: If you do want to go on holiday, you already
- 25:50Speaker 4: know that you're going on holiday from this period to
- 25:53Speaker 4: this period. If this just happens register.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Especially if you've booked a holiday in advance, which I'm
- 25:58Speaker 2: assuming most people do. Like go pop yourself up genius.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Yeah totally, So that's me for this.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I love that. I think that's a good one. Beck
- 26:08Speaker 2: Let's go to a really quick break because I am
- 26:11Speaker 2: excited to get into the nitty gritty. On the flip side,
- 26:13Speaker 2: we're gonna be talking about being smart with your money
- 26:15Speaker 2: when you're single, and then we're gonna be talking about
- 26:17Speaker 2: a topic that you slid into our dms about which
- 26:19Speaker 2: this week we're talking about what do you do when
- 26:21Speaker 2: you've got concerns about your partner's spending? So don't go anywhere, guys.
- 26:29Speaker 5: Welcome back everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 26:31Speaker 5: money dilemma.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Hi. There, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 26:37Speaker 2: can't solve? The Sheese on the Money team is here
- 26:40Speaker 2: to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 26:43Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 26:46Speaker 2: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 26:49Speaker 2: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 26:51Speaker 2: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 26:54Speaker 2: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 26:58Speaker 6: Hi. Girls. First of all, I really love your podcast
- 27:01Speaker 6: and Victoria your book has completely changed my life. I've
- 27:05Speaker 6: noticed that a lot of money diarists who call in
- 27:08Speaker 6: are part of a couple, but a lot of them
- 27:11Speaker 6: seem to be like double income, which is a little
- 27:14Speaker 6: bit of the wind in the back. And I notice
- 27:16Speaker 6: a lot of the finance talk and finance world is
- 27:20Speaker 6: sort of centered around a world where almost everyone seems
- 27:24Speaker 6: to be in a couple. I feel like, on top
- 27:26Speaker 6: of that, the tacks brackets are kind of stacked against singles,
- 27:31Speaker 6: particularly like I'm thirty seven, I'm divorced, I'm trying my
- 27:36Speaker 6: best on my own, I've only just started investing, and
- 27:38Speaker 6: I just feel like the whole finance world is screaming
- 27:41Speaker 6: at me to couple because it's so much easier. Do you,
- 27:46Speaker 6: I guess, have any tips for how to be smart
- 27:50Speaker 6: when you're on your own and when you're not looking
- 27:53Speaker 6: to couple, because I'm not really interested in sharing my finances.
- 27:57Speaker 2: That's a really good question, and I have been thinking
- 27:59Speaker 2: about this a lot recently. So first, thank you, how nice.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I love that you've read my book. Also, I noticed
- 28:07Speaker 2: your accent. Can you move in with Jess? But I
- 28:13Speaker 2: don't think we talk about this enough because I think
- 28:16Speaker 2: we are often like women power right, like, if you're
- 28:18Speaker 2: not in the right relationship, just leave, like you don't
- 28:21Speaker 2: deserve that. I totally get that. But the expense of
- 28:24Speaker 2: being single, especially right now, is astronomical. You are paying
- 28:29Speaker 2: so much more just to exist. Think about it like this, right, Like,
- 28:33Speaker 2: when I was twenty one, I was single, I lived
- 28:35Speaker 2: in a sharehouse, and if I had been listening to
- 28:37Speaker 2: this podcast episode, I'd be like, oh, well, it's not
- 28:40Speaker 2: that bad, Like I have housemates. You could just get housemates.
- 28:43Speaker 2: By the time you get to thirty five or forty,
- 28:46Speaker 2: you don't want housemates. You want your own sacred space.
- 28:49Speaker 2: You want your own property, and you want your own options.
- 28:53Speaker 2: You want your own car, like you don't want to
- 28:54Speaker 2: be reliant on someone else. So it literally doubles the
- 28:58Speaker 2: cost of Most things be significantly cheaper if you split
- 29:01Speaker 2: it with someone else. But even in a one bedroom apartment,
- 29:05Speaker 2: like let's say you've got a one bedroom apartment here
- 29:06Speaker 2: in Melbourne, you're paying like five hundred bucks a week.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Obviously that's a lot of money, but if you were
- 29:12Speaker 2: splitting it, it was two fifty a week. Immediately, your accommodation
- 29:15Speaker 2: is so much cheaper. Get a car. Maybe you live
- 29:18Speaker 2: in the city, you only need one car in the household,
- 29:21Speaker 2: but if you're single, that entire expense is on you. Groceries,
- 29:26Speaker 2: cleaning products, everything doubles, and it then makes the pressure
- 29:30Speaker 2: of going out so much higher because you know you're
- 29:33Speaker 2: going out. Yes, you're only paying for you, but you've
- 29:36Speaker 2: got all of these other expenses in the background that
- 29:38Speaker 2: you're coupled up friends don't have, and like you and
- 29:41Speaker 2: your friend, like one could be on seventy grand and
- 29:43Speaker 2: the others on seventy grand, but in a couple, their
- 29:46Speaker 2: disposable income is going to be so much higher. So
- 29:49Speaker 2: even though you're like, we're on part we earn the
- 29:51Speaker 2: same amount, you have different commitments and obligations. And I
- 29:54Speaker 2: think that it needs to be spoken about more. And
- 29:57Speaker 2: I mean, this is probably a really good time to
- 29:59Speaker 2: shout out some single queens in our community who are
- 30:02Speaker 2: doing that that want to share their stories on money diaries.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I am ready to chat with you, but we also
- 30:08Speaker 2: do have a lot of single diaries. I think the
- 30:10Speaker 2: best thing that you can do is use your podcasting app.
- 30:12Speaker 2: So if you type in single she's on the money
- 30:14Speaker 2: money diaries, a couple should come up. Because historically, if
- 30:18Speaker 2: you were looking for them by the name of the episode,
- 30:21Speaker 2: the SEO on podcasting apps didn't pick up the caption
- 30:25Speaker 2: or the show notes to explain what that diary is about.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Now it does, so it's much easier to find our content,
- 30:30Speaker 2: which we love. But I think that we need to
- 30:33Speaker 2: talk about more single costs it's so hard being single,
- 30:37Speaker 2: and I'm assuming that there are a lot of people
- 30:39Speaker 2: in our community who are like, look, there's nothing wrong
- 30:41Speaker 2: with my relationship. I'm not in love anymore, but it's
- 30:45Speaker 2: not worth leaving, so cbf. I'm living my best life
- 30:48Speaker 2: right now. I don't, particularly in this economy, want to
- 30:50Speaker 2: go and get a single apartment, like you know, we've
- 30:53Speaker 2: fallen into this, like I don't know dance of just
- 30:57Speaker 2: living together as housemates. I don't really want to change
- 31:00Speaker 2: right now because it's just too much of an upheaval.
- 31:02Speaker 2: I have friends in that position, and I just go,
- 31:05Speaker 2: what's the advice, Beck, you're good at a broke tip.
- 31:08Speaker 2: You've been single not now though, Yeah, what's that like
- 31:13Speaker 2: for you?
- 31:14Speaker 4: That's such a great question. And it's like it's that's
- 31:16Speaker 4: such a good thing that this person has pointed out
- 31:18Speaker 4: because I didn't even really notice. But there's something that
- 31:20Speaker 4: I hold very close to me is that I kind
- 31:24Speaker 4: of have never ever been a deity person. Like I've
- 31:27Speaker 4: never been like you must be with someone. It's never
- 31:30Speaker 4: been my life's goal, my life's dream. Before Jess, the
- 31:34Speaker 4: person i'm dating now, there was nothing before, Yes, nothing,
- 31:38Speaker 4: I didn't care I'd never thought about I love ever
- 31:41Speaker 4: being in a relationship, because it just like, if it
- 31:43Speaker 4: comes up organically, cool, if not, whatever. But I'm in
- 31:45Speaker 4: a very different position where I do live in the
- 31:47Speaker 4: sharehouse and I don't really want to live by myself
- 31:51Speaker 4: at the moment. I did notice this is a side note.
- 31:53Speaker 4: I've I started spending way more money when I started dating,
- 31:56Speaker 4: but that's because she's my princess you want. It is
- 32:06Speaker 4: such a good point because now that I'm like looking
- 32:08Speaker 4: at maybe wanting to buy my own apartment one day
- 32:11Speaker 4: and maybe wanting to live by myself one day, I'm like, oh,
- 32:14Speaker 4: this is so expensive, but.
- 32:15Speaker 2: It's astronomical even in your situation where you're like right now,
- 32:18Speaker 2: I'm not incurring these costs personally, But like, would living
- 32:22Speaker 2: on your own be an option for you.
- 32:24Speaker 4: At the moment? Probably not if I want to stay
- 32:27Speaker 4: exactly where I am, But if I want to like
- 32:29Speaker 4: move out a little bit more to cheaper places, absolutely
- 32:31Speaker 4: I could do that. I just I don't have that
- 32:34Speaker 4: desire at the moment. But I think, like I would
- 32:36Speaker 4: always this isn't really even that great advice, but I
- 32:39Speaker 4: would always put my own personal happiness, make sure all
- 32:42Speaker 4: my buckets are full in every other way. Maybe you
- 32:45Speaker 4: have community, maybe you have work, maybe you have friends,
- 32:47Speaker 4: all these other things. If at the core of myself
- 32:51Speaker 4: and at the end of every day I feel full
- 32:54Speaker 4: and happy. I have been broke for so long that
- 32:57Speaker 4: that doesn't actually bother me as much. But I know
- 33:00Speaker 4: that we're in a very different position because this person
- 33:02Speaker 4: who has rang in with their dilemma, I'm sure they're
- 33:05Speaker 4: probably in a different life stage so they can't really
- 33:07Speaker 4: rely on Like, as long as you're happy, it doesn't matter.
- 33:09Speaker 4: So I totally understand that, but I think, yeah, just
- 33:12Speaker 4: nothing's worth you know, your happiness. So if you're like
- 33:15Speaker 4: getting in a situation where you're dating someone just because
- 33:18Speaker 4: it's a lot actually cheaper to live, it's probably not
- 33:22Speaker 4: worth it at the end of the day. I know
- 33:23Speaker 4: that's not great money.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Advice, No, no, no, no, but it's real advice. And
- 33:26Speaker 2: I'm about to ask Jess the same question. Just is
- 33:28Speaker 2: in a very different situation. She lives with her partner,
- 33:31Speaker 2: they've got no intention of breaking up. This is a dramatization,
- 33:34Speaker 2: but like, Jess, what would your life look like if
- 33:38Speaker 2: you were single right now? Because you have a really
- 33:40Speaker 2: nice house, you've got, you know, a duel income, like
- 33:42Speaker 2: you've got two cars, all of this like stuff that
- 33:45Speaker 2: a lot of people go, oh my gosh, like goals.
- 33:49Speaker 2: But like, if you were to become single financially, what
- 33:52Speaker 2: do you think that would look like?
- 33:53Speaker 5: It's hard to picture you because I've been in a
- 33:55Speaker 5: relation nine years I think at this point, so well, yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 5: I've never When I was single, I was living in
- 34:03Speaker 5: a share house. I was in like iah, that's the
- 34:05Speaker 5: same things made me like, it's it was a very
- 34:07Speaker 5: different experience. I think, like, could I afford to keep
- 34:12Speaker 5: like if worst case there we broke up, could I
- 34:14Speaker 5: pay all of our rent because we're on like a lease,
- 34:15Speaker 5: Yes I could. Like could I continue to live my lifestyle? Yes, okay, career,
- 34:19Speaker 5: but I think like the big thing, thank you, But
- 34:21Speaker 5: I think the big thing is that exactly what our
- 34:24Speaker 5: listener highlighted, I would have to make compromises in your lifestyle.
- 34:28Speaker 5: So I probably would not like I wouldn't be able
- 34:30Speaker 5: to invest the money that I'm investing because that money
- 34:32Speaker 5: would have to go towards rent. Ye, I would probably
- 34:35Speaker 5: be saving significantly less if anything, towards my house deposit.
- 34:39Speaker 5: I would have to cut my discretionary spending, so like
- 34:41Speaker 5: could I keep like, could I pay my rent? Could
- 34:43Speaker 5: I pay my bills? Yes, but at the cost of
- 34:47Speaker 5: a lot of things, which I think is kind of
- 34:48Speaker 5: the point that our listener was making to coromise. Yeah, like,
- 34:51Speaker 5: is it possible to live by yourself? Of course it is,
- 34:54Speaker 5: but it is a lot harder, and I think it
- 34:57Speaker 5: would be I would find it really hard because I
- 34:59Speaker 5: would have to change the goalposts that I've had for
- 35:02Speaker 5: so long. And I can understand how for our listeners,
- 35:05Speaker 5: she's saying, oh, well, I'm not investing, and that might
- 35:06Speaker 5: be something that she's really wanting to do because she's
- 35:08Speaker 5: motivated and she's read the book and she's listened to
- 35:10Speaker 5: the show, but she's like, well, where do I get
- 35:11Speaker 5: the money from? And I think the really harsh reality
- 35:16Speaker 5: is you may not be able to just pull it
- 35:20Speaker 5: out of thin air, like as much as I want
- 35:21Speaker 5: to be able to say, oh my.
- 35:22Speaker 2: God, baby, actually he's a plan.
- 35:25Speaker 5: Yeah, Like I genuinely think like if that was me
- 35:27Speaker 5: in that situation tomorrow, I didn't have a boyfriend anymore
- 35:29Speaker 5: and I had to sort it out, like that would
- 35:31Speaker 5: be my reality. It would be I can't do the
- 35:33Speaker 5: things that I wanted.
- 35:34Speaker 2: She's a resourceful queen, so we know she would. Yeah,
- 35:36Speaker 2: like it would look different, and like there are lots
- 35:39Speaker 2: of like I would say, the biggest thing would be
- 35:41Speaker 2: to look at increasing your income decreasing your expenditure. Obviously
- 35:45Speaker 2: we don't know anything about what our listener, you know,
- 35:47Speaker 2: her personal situation, but like where you can can you
- 35:50Speaker 2: negotiate a pay rise, can you take on a little
- 35:52Speaker 2: bit of extra work, like can you get.
- 35:53Speaker 5: A side hustle or a second job or whatever. Can
- 35:55Speaker 5: you make cuts other things that you're willing to cut
- 35:59Speaker 5: or are even able to But beyond that, I think,
- 36:02Speaker 5: like I don't even fully know what to say. To
- 36:05Speaker 5: be honestly, it just it sucks, is what I want
- 36:07Speaker 5: to acknowledge.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Like it just you can't especially in a cost of
- 36:10Speaker 2: living christ Yeah, like I don't want everything's so much
- 36:13Speaker 2: more expensive. Yeah, And I don't want to sound tone
- 36:16Speaker 2: deaf in saying, well, it is what it is. But
- 36:19Speaker 2: I also I don't necessarily know what advice I have
- 36:23Speaker 2: to give you other than acknowledging that it's a shit situation,
- 36:26Speaker 2: and you know, if you can make those cuts and adjustments,
- 36:29Speaker 2: like that'll help a little bit. But like, honestly, I
- 36:32Speaker 2: just fully recognize that it's so much hard when you're
- 36:35Speaker 2: single real and I mean the grass is always greener
- 36:37Speaker 2: round like your friends that are coupled up that are
- 36:41Speaker 2: you know, maybe it's like me, right, I am so
- 36:44Speaker 2: happily coupled up, like I adore my husband, don't want
- 36:47Speaker 2: to change it. Sometimes I look at my single friend
- 36:49Speaker 2: and I'm like, must be nice to go out and
- 36:51Speaker 2: do whatever you want. Oh it's Wednesday and you're having
- 36:54Speaker 2: espresso martinis. Can't relate to have a baby, Like we
- 36:56Speaker 2: always look at different situations with rose colored glasses on.
- 37:01Speaker 2: And you know what, my friend's probably looking back at me,
- 37:03Speaker 2: going like I can't wait to find husband and finally
- 37:06Speaker 2: have a baby. And I think that putting blinkers back
- 37:09Speaker 2: on when it comes to your budget is really important here. Like,
- 37:13Speaker 2: I know it's tough, I know it's hard. It is
- 37:15Speaker 2: going to look significantly different to your coupled up friends
- 37:18Speaker 2: who are able to share expenses, but that is not
- 37:21Speaker 2: your reality, So stop comparing yourself to that situation. It's
- 37:25Speaker 2: like when I say, and I've said this before on
- 37:26Speaker 2: the podcast, you can't give a budget template to someone
- 37:30Speaker 2: who earns forty thousand dollars and expect that same budget
- 37:33Speaker 2: template to work for someone who has a four hundred
- 37:36Speaker 2: thousand dollar income. Not only are they going to have
- 37:39Speaker 2: different amounts of cash to disperse, but they could be
- 37:42Speaker 2: in different situations. Like that forty thousand dollars a year
- 37:45Speaker 2: income earner could be a single mum who you know
- 37:48Speaker 2: is just cutting her teeth to get by, and it's
- 37:52Speaker 2: incredible at this point that she's breaking even every single
- 37:54Speaker 2: month but can't save it, can't invest. I think we
- 37:57Speaker 2: need to see it often as a season of life,
- 38:00Speaker 2: not to say you have to couple up, because like,
- 38:02Speaker 2: you could be single by choice for the rest of
- 38:04Speaker 2: your life, and that is an epic outcome if that's
- 38:07Speaker 2: your choice. But I think we need to put some
- 38:09Speaker 2: blinkers on and go, well, what resources am I working with?
- 38:12Speaker 2: How much is coming into my account, what are my
- 38:14Speaker 2: long term goals? What do I want to achieve? Because
- 38:17Speaker 2: at the end of the day, every normal person has
- 38:20Speaker 2: to make compromises in their budget to achieve their goals.
- 38:23Speaker 2: And we go back to Jess right, and like, I'm
- 38:25Speaker 2: using you as an example because I think that it
- 38:27Speaker 2: is a very good example, because you know, you would
- 38:30Speaker 2: be in a position that a lot of people go,
- 38:32Speaker 2: oh my gosh, I would love to be in Jess's position,
- 38:34Speaker 2: where I have my house deposits saved, like I've got
- 38:36Speaker 2: a really nice boyfriend, Like we have two cars in
- 38:39Speaker 2: the driveway, like everything's okay, we're paying rent. But for
- 38:43Speaker 2: me to compare that person to you, it's crippling them
- 38:47Speaker 2: because even with that lifestyle that other people are envious of, Jess,
- 38:51Speaker 2: there are still things that I know you're making compromises on.
- 38:53Speaker 5: Yeah, like there are still.
- 38:54Speaker 2: Things that Jess is like, oh, I'm definitely not able
- 38:57Speaker 2: to do, you know. And we've had this conversation before.
- 39:00Speaker 2: You're like, I really love pilates, but I'm not going
- 39:02Speaker 2: to do two classes a week. I'm going to drop
- 39:04Speaker 2: back to one because it's just getting expensive. And I'm
- 39:08Speaker 2: not saying like that's a luxury. It's just an example.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Don't for two seconds think that I am completely dystopian
- 39:14Speaker 2: in the type of lifestyles we lead. But even Jess
- 39:18Speaker 2: is making compromises to live the lifestyle that she wants
- 39:21Speaker 2: to live, and I mean we all do that, So
- 39:24Speaker 2: I think it's don't compare yourself to others. Yeah, not
- 39:27Speaker 2: only are you not on the same journey, but you
- 39:30Speaker 2: just don't even have the same resources. Like if Jess
- 39:33Speaker 2: compared herself to me, it's completely different. Again, I also
- 39:37Speaker 2: have a completely different set of expenses that Jess is
- 39:40Speaker 2: not incurring. I pay for daycare, I pay for nappies,
- 39:44Speaker 2: I pay for formula, and just like, oh, they wouldn't
- 39:46Speaker 2: be in my budget. Yeah, so why are we looking
- 39:48Speaker 2: at the way that I do things? And I think
- 39:50Speaker 2: that's why I get so frustrated when I see these
- 39:53Speaker 2: percentage based budgets recommend it and people go theye, well,
- 39:57Speaker 2: how much should I be saving? Well, I don't know,
- 40:00Speaker 2: because I haven't had time to break down your entire
- 40:04Speaker 2: budget and work out what your non negotiable costs are
- 40:07Speaker 2: and what discretionary income we have left to play with.
- 40:10Speaker 2: And that's what we should be talking about. None of
- 40:12Speaker 2: this like, oh, Jess, you actually need to be saving
- 40:14Speaker 2: ten percent, because ten percent for someone on four hundred grand,
- 40:17Speaker 2: that's so much money. Yeah, ten percent for someone who
- 40:21Speaker 2: is on forty thousand dollars and a single mum mate,
- 40:24Speaker 2: that's way too much. There's no room in her budget
- 40:27Speaker 2: to save. So we need to just look at our
- 40:30Speaker 2: own situations and go, well, with the situation I'm in
- 40:33Speaker 2: and the resources that are coming in, what is possible
- 40:35Speaker 2: and what does this look like? And then if you're
- 40:38Speaker 2: not happy with that, what levers can we trigger to change?
- 40:41Speaker 2: And what compromise are we making? And it's not something
- 40:44Speaker 2: you want to hear, right, like no one wants to hear,
- 40:46Speaker 2: Oh beck will actually to achieve the life you want,
- 40:50Speaker 2: it's actually going to mean compromising, Like no one wants that.
- 40:53Speaker 2: I don't want to hear that. You don't want to
- 40:54Speaker 2: hear that. But that's the reality of the situation. And
- 40:57Speaker 2: while it's not that sexy, that's something we can work with, Like,
- 41:00Speaker 2: that's something we can take and go Okay, well, actually
- 41:02Speaker 2: that's quite tangible. I'm gonna go do this for me.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I'm going to create a plan. I'm going to see
- 41:07Speaker 2: if that works. And if investing is a goal, how
- 41:10Speaker 2: much do you have? If saving for a holidays a goal,
- 41:13Speaker 2: what's that going to look like? And there are just
- 41:15Speaker 2: lots of different levers that we can pull. You want
- 41:17Speaker 2: to go on a holiday back, great, how much is
- 41:19Speaker 2: it going to cost? Five grand? Okay, holy moly? How
- 41:23Speaker 2: long is that going to take you. It might take longer,
- 41:25Speaker 2: but it doesn't mean we can't achieve the same thing. Yes,
- 41:29Speaker 2: So I think that's probably where I would go with it.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And it's back to the blinkers, like, stop comparing yourselves,
- 41:34Speaker 2: because I've just gone around the table and there are
- 41:37Speaker 2: very different experiences. But we're in the same company, we're
- 41:40Speaker 2: in the same group, and still we're not comparable.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Yes, that's so true. I do would to say one
- 41:45Speaker 4: last thing, really, really really I love this just in
- 41:48Speaker 4: case our listener is in this kind of like because
- 41:52Speaker 4: I feel like societally we are living in a world
- 41:55Speaker 4: where it is assumed that you're in a couple. Yeah,
- 41:58Speaker 4: I really really don't like But anyway, that's the story
- 42:02Speaker 4: for another time. There are so many like assumptions here,
- 42:04Speaker 4: and one of them is that once you hit a
- 42:06Speaker 4: certain age, you're no longer allowed to live in a
- 42:08Speaker 4: sharehouse because it's like I don't know a mate.
- 42:10Speaker 1: No.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Basically, just in case our listener has that on their
- 42:13Speaker 4: radar but is thinking like, I don't know if I'm
- 42:16Speaker 4: I don't know, too old or too whatever. I mean,
- 42:18Speaker 4: if you want your own space, if you want to
- 42:20Speaker 4: do that, of course, but just in case that's a thought.
- 42:23Speaker 4: You are never ever too old, especially in this economy.
- 42:27Speaker 4: A lot of people, a lot of like people who
- 42:29Speaker 4: once were in relationships or just never have been or
- 42:32Speaker 4: just never want to be kind of like getting together
- 42:34Speaker 4: in this beautiful like you can find some really beautiful.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Friend single back like ever single. Yeah, I won't live alone.
- 42:41Speaker 4: No, it's it's quite. But you can also you know
- 42:45Speaker 4: sometimes friend, Yeah, you've made some and you can like
- 42:49Speaker 4: find these people like very flos or whatever your state's
- 42:51Speaker 4: equivalent is, find people that are similar to your age
- 42:55Speaker 4: or similar personality or whatever.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Very terrible housemate, Kick him out, Kick him out.
- 43:00Speaker 5: That's a great story.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Yeah, like my housemate who used to still my underwear. Anyway,
- 43:04Speaker 2: moving on, we have.
- 43:07Speaker 5: Another relationship seemed question actually today I'm excited about this one.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Guys.
- 43:12Speaker 2: So we had a DM this week and it sounded
- 43:15Speaker 2: a lot like this because I'm going to read it
- 43:17Speaker 2: to you for Baden Becka. You ready. So she's on
- 43:19Speaker 2: the money. I think my partner has an Amazon addiction.
- 43:23Speaker 2: He pays for the Prime membership for the free postage,
- 43:26Speaker 2: so it's his go to whenever he wants to shop.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Now it's getting to the stage where a package turns
- 43:31Speaker 2: up every other day. When I bring it up, he
- 43:33Speaker 2: gets defensive and says, they're all things we need. But
- 43:37Speaker 2: I think that they're nice to have, and I don't
- 43:39Speaker 2: think we'd buy them if Amazon wasn't so convenient with
- 43:42Speaker 2: the postage that he's already paid for. I don't want
- 43:45Speaker 2: to police his purchases. But all of these costs are
- 43:48Speaker 2: really adding up, and we've got goals we're meant to
- 43:51Speaker 2: be saving four Can you please help? Sounds like my house.
- 43:56Speaker 2: I think if you're my husband at me.
- 44:00Speaker 4: I think that like if it starts to eat into
- 44:03Speaker 4: your future goals, so I mean, I guess it would
- 44:06Speaker 4: be if you're like spending so much money on Amazon
- 44:08Speaker 4: or whatever it might be, if you have like future
- 44:11Speaker 4: goals that you set together and that's really encroaching on that.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Then it's all about communication, isn't it. Wow, It's key.
- 44:20Speaker 2: It's like we could just delete this entire segment of
- 44:24Speaker 2: our podcast ever, replace it with just a quicker reminder
- 44:27Speaker 2: that communication is key.
- 44:28Speaker 5: All right, have a good day, guys, exactly.
- 44:31Speaker 4: But I think if if you're like with me and
- 44:34Speaker 4: my partner, for example, like our finances aren't tied together.
- 44:37Speaker 4: So I feel like if I was in a posision
- 44:39Speaker 4: where I was not yet exactly and who knows.
- 44:42Speaker 2: But anyway, honestly, I'm at the point where I'm surprised
- 44:44Speaker 2: they aren't living together yet. Like it's just it's very
- 44:47Speaker 2: you hold it, but.
- 44:49Speaker 4: We are very alternative. Actually we will be together very.
- 44:56Speaker 2: When she was saying, you know, I might want to
- 44:58Speaker 2: live by myself at some stages, like really, really you do,
- 45:02Speaker 2: that's really cute.
- 45:03Speaker 4: I'm trying so hard not to like live this very
- 45:06Speaker 4: stereotypical lifestyle.
- 45:08Speaker 2: It's my favorite thing. Like my best friend is gay
- 45:13Speaker 2: as well, and whenever she's met someone historically, I'm always like,
- 45:17Speaker 2: so how long until you move in? And she's like, no,
- 45:19Speaker 2: it won't happen. Won't happen, Like we're not silly, Victoria.
- 45:22Speaker 2: And then the next week so we signed a lease.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Really I didn't see that coming's.
- 45:29Speaker 4: Gonna be for sure. Yeah, I guess like at this
- 45:31Speaker 4: point our finances aren't iied together. So if I was
- 45:35Speaker 4: spending all my money on something that made me happy
- 45:38Speaker 4: or just like was maybe like an addiction of some kind,
- 45:41Speaker 4: that is my own problem to deal with. And she
- 45:44Speaker 4: can like have a little say and like be like, oh,
- 45:46Speaker 4: I'm noticing your maybe addicted to buying things on Amazon.
- 45:50Speaker 4: But that's like, that's as far as it goes in
- 45:52Speaker 4: terms of like affecting her and vice versa. So I
- 45:54Speaker 4: guess if you're at that point, like again like cute communication,
- 45:57Speaker 4: but if it's not affecting you, ah in your financial goals,
- 46:02Speaker 4: I guess it still is in an indirect way. Yeah,
- 46:06Speaker 4: I really feel like that's a very annoying than say
- 46:09Speaker 4: that communication.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Everything just got argue you also have an Amazon addiction.
- 46:13Speaker 5: I love Chek, I do Do you pay for Prime?
- 46:17Speaker 1: Of course?
- 46:18Speaker 5: Yet me too?
- 46:22Speaker 2: They just I don't even know. I think it's carry
- 46:25Speaker 2: a pigeon beck, Like the stuff gets there so quick.
- 46:28Speaker 5: It's the fact that I ordered something that I did,
- 46:31Speaker 5: realized I needed very last minute at like eleven o'clock,
- 46:34Speaker 5: and by eight am the next morning my doors. Really
- 46:37Speaker 5: it was crazy. Who crazy?
- 46:41Speaker 2: That's actually more efficient than waiting for JB High Fighter
- 46:44Speaker 2: open and going out and getting it myself there. Like
- 46:46Speaker 2: so I can empathize, but jess if it was becoming
- 46:49Speaker 2: a problem, what will be a look at To me?
- 46:51Speaker 5: It's a very simple solution, and I don't know if
- 46:54Speaker 5: that means that I'm oversimplifying it, But it's just a
- 46:57Speaker 5: matter of how much money do you have allocated for
- 46:59Speaker 5: just verationary spending's going.
- 47:01Speaker 2: To go with it. I was like, have you done
- 47:03Speaker 2: a budget? No one wants to hear that anymore, Like
- 47:06Speaker 2: everyone's over me going budget budget, budget, budget.
- 47:10Speaker 5: But it's like it's for a reason if you I'm
- 47:12Speaker 5: assuming they're sharing expenses because she's saying that it's compromising
- 47:15Speaker 5: their shared goals, in which case I would say that
- 47:18Speaker 5: when you share expenses, and obviously it's totally up to
- 47:21Speaker 5: you as a couple how you structure your expenditure, but
- 47:26Speaker 5: you should each have an allocation from my perspective of
- 47:29Speaker 5: money that you can spend on whatever you want. So
- 47:32Speaker 5: like you each get twenty bucks a week or fifty
- 47:34Speaker 5: bucks a week or whatever fits within.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Your budget, and that's not questioned.
- 47:38Speaker 5: Yeah. Literally, it's like you, that's your money. If you
- 47:40Speaker 5: want to buy a coffee every day, if you want
- 47:41Speaker 5: to go out for drinks on Friday night, if you
- 47:43Speaker 5: want to buy ten million things on Amazon, as long
- 47:46Speaker 5: as it fits within that allocated money, that's your money
- 47:49Speaker 5: to spend. Anything outside of that then becomes Okay, that
- 47:53Speaker 5: is a cost that needs to be discussed because you've
- 47:55Speaker 5: got your money that's allocated for spending, for fun money,
- 47:58Speaker 5: as Victoria calls it. If you've spent your fun money,
- 48:01Speaker 5: then it's kind of you need to talk, well, are
- 48:03Speaker 5: we going to take more money away from our holiday
- 48:06Speaker 5: fund or whatever it is? To me, it's as simple
- 48:09Speaker 5: as that. So if you don't have allocated discretionary spending,
- 48:13Speaker 5: implement it. If you do have it and he's going
- 48:15Speaker 5: over it, then it's a conversation that needs to be
- 48:17Speaker 5: had about, Okay, well we set these ground rules or
- 48:20Speaker 5: these amounts of money that we could spend, and you're
- 48:23Speaker 5: going over that, and that's compromising other things. So do
- 48:26Speaker 5: we need to redo our budget or do you need
- 48:28Speaker 5: to stop pressing ad to cut? And you know that's
- 48:30Speaker 5: a conversation between you guys.
- 48:32Speaker 2: But is that like that's quite simple. I know that
- 48:36Speaker 2: it's probably a bit emotionally charged as well, because you're
- 48:39Speaker 2: probably seeing all these packages arrive and every single time
- 48:43Speaker 2: you see them arrive, you're probably getting like, oh another one,
- 48:45Speaker 2: Like you're getting frustrated with this. So we need to
- 48:48Speaker 2: probably sit down and do as Jess is recommending, go
- 48:51Speaker 2: have a look at your budget. What is going on there?
- 48:54Speaker 2: Is this actually coming out of their fund money? If not,
- 48:57Speaker 2: what is it coming out of and have you, I
- 48:59Speaker 2: guess zoomed out and looked at the bigger picture you
- 49:02Speaker 2: mentioned before my fun money, And I think that it's
- 49:05Speaker 2: a really good idea to label it that way. I know,
- 49:08Speaker 2: so like actually's on the money We pay monthly, right,
- 49:10Speaker 2: So I get my income into my account every month,
- 49:14Speaker 2: but then I have an autodirect debit transfer that happens
- 49:18Speaker 2: every single week on a Thursday to my fun money account.
- 49:22Speaker 2: And I know if I wanted to purchase something on
- 49:24Speaker 2: Amazon but there was nothing in there, I just put
- 49:25Speaker 2: it off a bit until I have more fun money.
- 49:27Speaker 2: And I think that that helps me a lot because
- 49:30Speaker 2: I know it's a consistent, Like I know that every
- 49:33Speaker 2: single week I have that amount that I can spend
- 49:36Speaker 2: money on and it's not eating into our bigger goals.
- 49:39Speaker 2: It would be a bigger conversation for Steve and I
- 49:42Speaker 2: if it was and I was moving money from different
- 49:44Speaker 2: places to make these purchases. But for me, I'm like, oh,
- 49:47Speaker 2: I spent it all, Okay, I wait to next Thursday.
- 49:50Speaker 2: I'm still going to order it like it's still happening.
- 49:52Speaker 2: But I'm allowed to do that because that's within our
- 49:55Speaker 2: budgeting like parameters, I suppose, So is it within that?
- 50:00Speaker 2: If not, how are you going to manage for that?
- 50:03Speaker 2: If you feel like you're not on the same page
- 50:06Speaker 2: about budgeting and spending and all of these purchases, I
- 50:10Speaker 2: would argue that bringing up his Amazon purchases as the
- 50:13Speaker 2: main point of the conversation isn't a good idea. I'd
- 50:16Speaker 2: actually go, Hey, I'm feeling a little bit in disarray.
- 50:19Speaker 2: I'd really love to do a refresh, like let's just
- 50:23Speaker 2: do a brand new budget, start from scrap should we
- 50:26Speaker 2: can go through all of our expenses and that way, one,
- 50:29Speaker 2: you're doing a really nice financial health check on your
- 50:32Speaker 2: own financial health. But you're also able to bring this
- 50:36Speaker 2: up as a really small part of a bigger conversation
- 50:39Speaker 2: about where as a couple you're heading. Because it can
- 50:42Speaker 2: be quite confrontational. I know that if I went to
- 50:44Speaker 2: Jess and said, Jess, you're spending too much on Amazon,
- 50:46Speaker 2: she'd be like, what, No, I'm not. You spend so
- 50:49Speaker 2: much on drinks, and you know, you go out with
- 50:51Speaker 2: your friends and you're always paying for coffee she might
- 50:54Speaker 2: be right, like she might be spending her fun money
- 50:57Speaker 2: and mine just looks different. But because I don't have
- 51:00Speaker 2: anything physical that I bring homese is so much more
- 51:03Speaker 2: visible than mine. So I think we need to just
- 51:06Speaker 2: zoom out a bit, have a look at the big picture, communicate,
- 51:09Speaker 2: and do a budget. That's usually what gets everyone back
- 51:12Speaker 2: on the same page. And then if you identify that
- 51:15Speaker 2: that is an issue that is eating into your goals,
- 51:18Speaker 2: then we can have a conversation about what that looks
- 51:21Speaker 2: like and how maybe we could change that or maybe
- 51:23Speaker 2: setting limits. Because at the end of the day, I
- 51:27Speaker 2: think we need to enjoy the journey, like we need
- 51:29Speaker 2: to be enjoying life at the same time as working
- 51:32Speaker 2: towards financial freedom. I mean, don't get me wrong, the
- 51:35Speaker 2: fire community financial independence retire early, they wouldn't have this,
- 51:40Speaker 2: But I think that to be on the best page.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Guess what I'm going to say. Communication, Oh yeah, that
- 51:46Speaker 2: a part, a really healthy part of communication is clarity, right,
- 51:51Speaker 2: and to give yourself clarity. Conversation tools and communication tools
- 51:56Speaker 2: do look like budgets and things that you can bring
- 51:59Speaker 2: to the table that are structured, so these conversations aren't
- 52:02Speaker 2: as emotional they're not, Jess, I feel like you're spending
- 52:05Speaker 2: too much. They are. Hey, I can see from the
- 52:07Speaker 2: budget that we are overspending in this area. How can
- 52:10Speaker 2: we strip that back? And then it can be an
- 52:12Speaker 2: open conversation where no one feels like they're being attacked,
- 52:15Speaker 2: because the second you start attacking someone, especially about money,
- 52:19Speaker 2: they're going to shut down and never want to talk
- 52:20Speaker 2: to you again. I don't want to talk about money
- 52:22Speaker 2: if you're going to make me feel bad about it.
- 52:24Speaker 2: That's not for me. Thanks, though, I'd actually prefer to
- 52:27Speaker 2: go back into debt.
- 52:28Speaker 4: Yeah. What did the community have to say?
- 52:31Speaker 2: So we did, as always ask the community. First question
- 52:33Speaker 2: we asked was should both partners agree on a purchase
- 52:36Speaker 2: if it is not considered to be necessary. Forty six
- 52:39Speaker 2: percent of you said yes, Agreement is key in relationships.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Fifty four percent of you said no. Each person can
- 52:45Speaker 2: decide for themselves. Do you discuss unnecessary purchases or are
- 52:50Speaker 2: you like me and you just have fun money? And
- 52:51Speaker 2: if it's above and beyond fun money, we have to
- 52:53Speaker 2: discuss it.
- 52:54Speaker 5: We don't share funds, so it's a household purchase.
- 52:57Speaker 2: What if you're going to buy a TV like New
- 52:59Speaker 2: TV for the launde room.
- 53:01Speaker 5: Yeah, if we were going to buy like a big
- 53:02Speaker 5: piece of furniture or something, that would be a conversation
- 53:04Speaker 5: for sure, probably aesthetics.
- 53:07Speaker 4: I would imagine you're probably like.
- 53:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm like I'm probably wanting the more expensive, pretty
- 53:11Speaker 5: item and he's like, the fifty dollars whatever is fine
- 53:14Speaker 5: if you I mean, sit down, sit down, sir. You
- 53:17Speaker 5: don't get it. There's a conversation to be had there.
- 53:19Speaker 2: But is there a limit? Do you reckon? Like do
- 53:22Speaker 2: we need to discuss a fifty dollar purchase?
- 53:24Speaker 5: It's hard to take because for us, the only things
- 53:26Speaker 5: that we share expenses for are like Bill's groceries, rent imature. Yeah,
- 53:31Speaker 5: pretty much. I think like anything to me, yeah, kind
- 53:35Speaker 5: of anything over fifty bucks feels expensive, especially if it's out,
- 53:38Speaker 5: Like if I had to buy laundry detergent pods, which
- 53:41Speaker 5: are like sixty dollars or see I got.
- 53:44Speaker 2: A bug in the other date reject shop though came
- 53:46Speaker 2: down to like thirty cents a pod.
- 53:48Speaker 5: You're welcome love the reatar shop. You mean, so like
- 53:50Speaker 5: if it was something like that that, like, yes, it's
- 53:51Speaker 5: technically over the fifty dollar limit, but like we need
- 53:53Speaker 5: it then no. But if it was, Oh, I want
- 53:56Speaker 5: to buy us a sixty dollar vase from shared funds.
- 54:00Speaker 5: Not that that's something we would spend shared funds on,
- 54:02Speaker 5: but if that was the case, then yeah, that would
- 54:04Speaker 5: be a conversation for us.
- 54:05Speaker 2: I feel like I still are and I don't know
- 54:07Speaker 2: if this is a bad thing or not, but when
- 54:11Speaker 2: I want to make a big purchase, I still ask Steve,
- 54:15Speaker 2: even though it's my own money, because I kind of
- 54:17Speaker 2: want validation fair. I'm like, oh, so I'm thinking about
- 54:21Speaker 2: buying this coat. It's kind of expensive. Do you think
- 54:24Speaker 2: it's cute? Do you think I'm going to get were?
- 54:26Speaker 2: I'm not really asking him if I can buy it.
- 54:28Speaker 2: I'm kind of like discussing the purchase. It's yeah, I'm like,
- 54:32Speaker 2: do you like it? He's the worst friend when it
- 54:34Speaker 2: comes to fashion. No bare, He's like, no, yeah, if
- 54:37Speaker 2: you feel good in it, you should get it. So
- 54:38Speaker 2: that's not what I'm asking. That is not what I'm asking.
- 54:41Speaker 2: He's like, is it a trap? Like every time I
- 54:44Speaker 2: do I look good? He's like, this is a trap?
- 54:46Speaker 5: Like the answer is always The answer.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Is always yes, Like it's not a trap. You should
- 54:49Speaker 2: have learnt by now. Next question that we asked the community,
- 54:52Speaker 2: We said, is it okay to set spending limits for
- 54:54Speaker 2: your partner if you're worried about their online shopping habits.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Sixty four percent of you said yes, it's reasonable budgeting,
- 55:01Speaker 2: and thirty six percent of you said no, that's true controlling.
- 55:04Speaker 5: I think for me, it's the free like you have
- 55:05Speaker 5: to set it together. Like I don't think I could
- 55:07Speaker 5: turn around and say to my partner you can only
- 55:10Speaker 5: spend one hundred dollars a week.
- 55:11Speaker 2: I'm not your mum exactly.
- 55:12Speaker 5: Like I think you should come to that decision together
- 55:15Speaker 5: about your shared expenses.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think again, get this, this is gonna
- 55:20Speaker 2: really blow your minds. Actually comes back to your budget.
- 55:23Speaker 2: So like you will have worked out all of your
- 55:26Speaker 2: non negotiable costs, those things that we can't avoid. Then
- 55:29Speaker 2: we're going to see what discretionary cash we have available
- 55:31Speaker 2: to allocate. We're going to set our savings and investments,
- 55:34Speaker 2: and then from there we're going to have some cash
- 55:35Speaker 2: left over to play with. Once that's allocated. I'm not saying, Jess,
- 55:39Speaker 2: you can only spend that. I'm saying to achieve everything
- 55:42Speaker 2: that we're achieving, this is the amount allocated each month
- 55:46Speaker 2: for us to play with, and if you want to
- 55:47Speaker 2: earn more, we need to go back to the drawing board.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Either reshuffle the budget to make a little bit more
- 55:53Speaker 2: wiggle room, or look at things like increasing our income
- 55:56Speaker 2: or moving to a different location or everything. Unfortunately is
- 56:01Speaker 2: about compromise because we can't just have our cake and
- 56:03Speaker 2: eat it too, And like that's sad but true. We did,
- 56:07Speaker 2: as always, asked the community for their two cents, and
- 56:10Speaker 2: we had a couple of really good comments. So someone said,
- 56:12Speaker 2: sounds like they need discretionary spending limits. Each can spend
- 56:16Speaker 2: x amount per week without asking permission. Feel like that's
- 56:18Speaker 2: a great place to start. Someone else said, my partner
- 56:22Speaker 2: didn't tell me I couldn't purchase things, but helped me
- 56:24Speaker 2: see it wasn't worth it. And I'm actually really glad
- 56:27Speaker 2: that's nice. Someone else said, I too, am the Amazon
- 56:31Speaker 2: addict in the situation, so I'm just here for the
- 56:33Speaker 2: advice police. I love that someone else said, create a
- 56:37Speaker 2: spreadsheet just for him to record the amount of value
- 56:40Speaker 2: in each month. It might help to be able to
- 56:43Speaker 2: see the bigger picture. I think that's a pretty good one,
- 56:46Speaker 2: But again, I feel like i'd be pretty pissed off
- 56:50Speaker 2: if you did that to me, like being honest, if
- 56:54Speaker 2: somebody sat me down, if my husband sat me down
- 56:56Speaker 2: and said, I think that your online spending is a
- 56:58Speaker 2: little bit much, So I've created a spreadshee en, I've
- 57:00Speaker 2: documented all the costs, so I'd be like, Okay, there's
- 57:03Speaker 2: no other way for me to feel except for attack here.
- 57:06Speaker 2: So I feel like again, going back to the bigger
- 57:08Speaker 2: picture is more constructive. But if it works for you,
- 57:12Speaker 2: give it a crack. Someone else said, you can offer
- 57:15Speaker 2: an opinion, but you can't control what someone else chooses
- 57:18Speaker 2: to spend their money on, which I think is really
- 57:20Speaker 2: important as well. True we said just before, Jess, we're
- 57:23Speaker 2: not your parents, like You're in a relationship, and a
- 57:26Speaker 2: relationship is give and take, and it's about equal contribution.
- 57:29Speaker 2: So I think it's important to remember that. Someone else said,
- 57:32Speaker 2: imagine what we would say if a husband tried to
- 57:35Speaker 2: control his wife's spending totally.
- 57:38Speaker 5: You know it's not for the gender lens on it,
- 57:41Speaker 5: but you know it goes both ways.
- 57:43Speaker 2: And then we'll leave you with one last one. Someone
- 57:46Speaker 2: else said, is he still contributing to what was agreed
- 57:49Speaker 2: to for the joint goals? If so, it's then his
- 57:52Speaker 2: money to spend. Yeah, so I feel like that's fair
- 57:54Speaker 2: just because you don't see value in the things he
- 57:56Speaker 2: sees value in. Maybe that's a bigger conversation. But again,
- 58:01Speaker 2: just do a budget. Start from scrappy.
- 58:03Speaker 5: It's crazy.
- 58:04Speaker 2: I get this. There's actually an entirely free one on
- 58:08Speaker 2: my website. You can download it for free. I made it,
- 58:11Speaker 2: so you know.
- 58:12Speaker 5: It's going to be good.
- 58:14Speaker 2: It's truly good.
- 58:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 58:16Speaker 2: There's lots of stuff on the resources page too. Just
- 58:18Speaker 2: a little shout out to that web page because everybody
- 58:21Speaker 2: dms us and says where do I get those savings hacks?
- 58:23Speaker 2: All those savings goals? They're just on our website. You
- 58:25Speaker 2: can download them, you can print them, you can frame them,
- 58:27Speaker 2: you can do whatever you want with them. You can
- 58:30Speaker 2: hand them out at work, you can put it on
- 58:31Speaker 2: your fridge. I don't care what you do with them,
- 58:33Speaker 2: as long as you're saving money. So with that, let's
- 58:36Speaker 2: leave it. Have a good week, guys, and we will
- 58:38Speaker 2: see you bright and early on Monday for a money diary. Bye, guys. Bye.
