- 0:01I've heard it said that people can change, but only if they
- 0:04want to. So what would it take for you to
- 0:07try it? Change the way you think, feel,
- 0:10relate and experience situations.
- 0:13For me, I wanted to find the truth and little by little I did
- 0:17become different and old conditionings gone.
- 0:22Then I set a new course. I refer to that as the second
- 0:26clock. Join me, click follow, like and
- 0:29subscribe and let's see where this leads.
- 0:33I used to be so nostalgic I guess I just wanted everything
- 0:36to stay the same. I wanted everything and everyone
- 0:41in their proper place in my life and in my world.
- 0:45I never saw myself moving or changing.
- 0:49I guess I don't recognize that girl anymore.
- 0:53I actually don't recognize the girl from just two years ago.
- 0:57I feel like now all I do is welcome and change and I'm
- 1:01embracing every change, every experience that made me change,
- 1:07even the bad and difficult ones. I realized I don't hold on to
- 1:11the past like I used to. I figured this out when an old
- 1:14friend of mine reached out to me.
- 1:17I haven't spoken to her in 15 years.
- 1:19We had lost touch when she moved to Europe, but now she was
- 1:23passing through LA for just a few days and wanted to
- 1:26reconnect. I jumped at the chance.
- 1:29This is somebody that I always thought had such a beautiful
- 1:32presence, A sparkly aura. So before we met, I sent her a
- 1:38text with, I guess the Cliff notes of all the changes that
- 1:40have happened in my life over the last few years.
- 1:43I felt like that way she could ask questions about what she was
- 1:46interested in or curious about, or we could skip over it all
- 1:51together. When I got to the coffee shop I
- 1:54was first to arrive, so when the door opened and my friend walked
- 1:58through, she was still as sparkly as ever and as smiley as
- 2:03always. She quickly ran over to me.
- 2:07I got a big hug from her and then she said guess what?
- 2:12I brought pictures of us from when we were young.
- 2:15I thought we could look at them, take a walk down memory lane and
- 2:19that's when I knew I had changed.
- 2:21The old girl would have been like, yes, let's look, let's
- 2:24reminisce, let's think about how we used to be.
- 2:28But no, that wasn't me anymore. And like a knee jerk reaction, I
- 2:32said I don't need to see those pictures.
- 2:35I know exactly what those pictures look like and I don't
- 2:39want to focus on the past. I want to leave that behind me.
- 2:42I just want to move forward now. She looked at me puzzled, but I
- 2:47think as we spoke, I think she understood, understood my
- 2:51perspective. See the girl in those pictures,
- 2:54I don't think she resembles me, not in looks, but in
- 2:58personality. I think she was weighed down by
- 3:01other people's ideas, other people's wants and needs for
- 3:05her. I've shed so much of that and I
- 3:09don't need to look back because that girl in those pictures,
- 3:12well, I see her clearly now. She was held back and a little
- 3:18bit sad. As we talked.
- 3:21My friend said, I'm sorry to hear that you're separated, that
- 3:25must be hard. And I said no, not at all.
- 3:30It's one of the most aligned decisions I've made.
- 3:32I guess it's a decision that I actually chose, unlike so many
- 3:36other decisions that I feel like I kind of just went with things.
- 3:41Later that evening, when I looked back on the question my
- 3:44friend had posed to me, I thought back to a conversation
- 3:47that I had had with my first boyfriend.
- 3:49I guess I was in a nostalgic mood.
- 3:52I remembered that I hadn't dated this guy long and I didn't know
- 3:56anything about what it was to date.
- 3:59As far as I was concerned, it was all about days passing,
- 4:02weeks passing, months passing, years passing, and then finding
- 4:07yourself having spent a life with somebody.
- 4:09That's how I measured a relationship, not on growth or
- 4:13on compatibility, just on time passing.
- 4:18So when I got a phone call from my then boyfriend and he said we
- 4:21got to talk, I didn't know that that was a bad sign.
- 4:25Like a you don't want to listen to what he has to say talk.
- 4:29I was hopeful. I was naive and he said so I
- 4:35feel like our relationship has become stagnant.
- 4:38At that time I had no idea what that word meant, but I was
- 4:41quickly going to find out because he was going to define
- 4:44our relationship and where he thought we were at.
- 4:48He said when I'm in a relationship, I measure it on
- 4:51the growth, on what we can learn.
- 4:54And I feel like I've learned all there is to learn from this
- 4:57relationship. And now we can remain friends,
- 5:00of course. But as far as us being in a
- 5:02relationship, I think it's plateaued.
- 5:06I sat there pretty confused. I didn't know what had
- 5:09plateaued, I didn't know what he was talking about.
- 5:13Of course, now looking back, I know exactly what he's talking
- 5:15about. And I guess I came to that same
- 5:18conclusion regarding my marriage.
- 5:20I felt like after 20 years of relating and partnering and
- 5:25experiencing life together, I felt like we had stagnated and
- 5:30it wasn't a bad thing to me. I saw it as a perfect ending, as
- 5:34a way to say thank you. I've learned so much and I hope
- 5:39you have too. And now let's go learn with
- 5:42others. Let's go try new things.
- 5:45Let's go see what else is out there.
- 5:48I'm very aware that this is a perspective that is not shared
- 5:51by most, but for a lot of people that I've met that are separated
- 5:55or recently divorced, they're not all hum glum.
- 5:59A lot of people see this as a new way to experience life, try
- 6:03things out, get lost in who they used to be before they were
- 6:07married, or start to think about who they want to be now that
- 6:12they're not married. I wish this idea was more common
- 6:16or more spoken about or even more accepted, because when my
- 6:21friend just said I'm sorry, this must be tough being separated.
- 6:26I wish that that had been exchanged with curiosity
- 6:29questions, wondering how did it happen, What are you going to do
- 6:33next? You've got options.
- 6:35Have you explored them? If you have, what have you found
- 6:40now? I know not all people are
- 6:42excited about being separated or divorced.
- 6:45Not all people welcome this new change.
- 6:48Some people didn't want it in the first place.
- 6:51But for me, relationships can be as simple as I've learned, as
- 6:56much as I'm going to learn. And now it's time to say thank
- 7:00you and move on. I don't know if there's so much
- 7:03of A benefit and things being strained, awkward or difficult.
- 7:09For me, that relationship can be celebrated.
- 7:13After all, being with someone for 20 years, you learn a lot,
- 7:17you change a lot, and you grow a lot.
- 7:21Sometimes you grow together, sometimes you grow apart, and
- 7:24sometimes you just grow into something different.
- 7:27For me and my former spouse, we just grew into something
- 7:30different, but it also came with awareness.
- 7:34I was aware that I was searching for something now.
- 7:36I wasn't searching for something for long.
- 7:39It kind of just came about. My life had started to shift.
- 7:43I had a new job, I had a new outlook, new people around me,
- 7:47and I guess I just started seeing things in a new way.
- 7:51I don't blame my job. If anything, I'm grateful.
- 7:56I'm grateful that I could become aware because before then I was
- 7:59very much asleep, very much accepting of what was, and I
- 8:04wasn't ready to embrace anything new.
- 8:07I was that girl that wanted everything to stay the same,
- 8:11everything to have its proper place.
- 8:14When I think back to my friend that I hadn't seen in 15 years
- 8:16and what she was like when she was in college, she thought
- 8:19differently. She saw her future differently.
- 8:22It was atypical. I remember when she was in
- 8:25college, she would say, I don't want to get married, I don't
- 8:29want to have kids. I want to do things differently.
- 8:33At the time, I didn't believe her.
- 8:35I didn't believe she knew what she wanted.
- 8:38I just thought, no, she's going to be like everybody else.
- 8:42She's going to conform. She's going to realize that
- 8:45marriage and having kids is what we do.
- 8:48And for a lot of us, it is what we do.
- 8:51And for me, that is the route I chose.
- 8:53And I am incredibly grateful because for me, I feel like I
- 8:57got to live life both ways. I got to live life having been
- 9:02married and having to have children, and now I get to live
- 9:07life differently. I get to know what it's like to
- 9:10be me again. Single, but with the added bonus
- 9:15of having kids. I consider everything worked out
- 9:18the way it was supposed to for me.
- 9:20That is now for my friend. She stayed the course mostly
- 9:25after getting what people would perceive as a good job, a secure
- 9:29and steady career path. She decided to let go of that
- 9:33job and move to Europe. And that's when she found more
- 9:37of herself, more of her authentic self.
- 9:40And then that's when she met someone.
- 9:43And then with love and practicality combined, they
- 9:45decided to get married and then retire early, like in their 30s,
- 9:52and go around South America until they wanted to settle
- 9:55again. And at that point, they didn't
- 9:57know where to settle. And then they chose Colorado,
- 10:00and that's where they made their home.
- 10:03But even after they planted some roots, they still kept that free
- 10:06spirit, the essence of their relationship.
- 10:10I got to hear about what my friend had been up to in all
- 10:12those years over coffees and matcha, and I got to meet her
- 10:16husband. I love that my friend had found
- 10:20herself her true way at such a young age.
- 10:24She just always knew. And I think some people are like
- 10:28that. I've spoken to some people that
- 10:30are like that. My mom is like that.
- 10:32But then there's a lot of us that aren't.
- 10:35We go through the motions, we do what is expected of us, and
- 10:40there's nothing wrong with that. For some, it's the perfect
- 10:44course. For others, well, you find out
- 10:48when you find out if it's right for you or not, Maybe you start
- 10:52to see cracks in your surface. Maybe you start questioning
- 10:56things and little by little you find yourself becoming more
- 10:59curious, more interested in what else is out there or who you
- 11:05used to be before or who you could be now.
- 11:10If only all of that is you becoming aware.
- 11:15Aware of your situation and your choices and all those questions.
- 11:21They turn into wonder. And then you start dreaming
- 11:24again. And then you open up and you
- 11:28become receptive to new thoughts, new perspectives, and
- 11:32you welcome and change and possibilities.
- 11:37And I guess after you've done all that, then you'll find
- 11:42yourself stagnant no more. Thanks for listening.
- 11:50These episodes are unscripted. They're my free flowing thoughts
- 11:54as I reflect back on past conversations, experiences, what
