Latest / Gym Business Coach Podcast / How Movement Quality Will Redefine the Training Industry w/ Marty Miller
Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: All right, welcome back to the Builds Grow Podcast.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm your host Tim Lines in a special virtual Zoom podcast webinar.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: Join today by, of course, not rainy, but Zach Columbia.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: What's up, buddy?
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, I'm here.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm here.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Good.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, guys, we got a special guest today.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: This is Mr. Morty Miller, the chief movement officer at Keynote Tech.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: We're excited to have you on the show as well.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: Marty, welcome.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for having me.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to be here.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, sir.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: And we got a lot of talk about today, guys.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: We are moving into a new era of training, a new horizon as not just in 2026, but 2026 in beyond.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: What we are delivering to our clients needs to be better, period and of story.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: We are excited to bring Marty on because not only do we have a really cool partnership with Kino Tech and some of my private pro,
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: but the stuff that they're doing over there and we'll get into that here in a second is next level and something that I believe that every gym needs to bring into their facilities so they can set themselves apart and deliver a better product to the consumer.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: So Marty, let's do this, just kind of kick the party off.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: Once you give everybody a quick overview on who you are,
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: and what you do at Keynote Tech.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, certainly, no, I appreciate that.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: So, my name is Marty Miller.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: My background is the sports medicine.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_02]: I went to school up in Buffalo, New York, Kinesh's college to become a certified athletic trainer.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_02]: My goal initially was to work with athletes to rest in my life.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I thought.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_02]: My career path was going to be.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_02]: So, I did get hired by the Montreal Exposed coming out of college.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: I volunteered in minor league baseball during the summers.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_02]: in my hometown and was fortunate to get hired immediately upon graduation, so that moved me to where I still live here today in Southeast Florida, did minor league baseball for four years, three full seasons, and back then, most people know what athletic trainers do, where the ones that run on the field, what somebody gets hurt, but really, our job is to treat musculoskeletal injuries, obviously there's traumatic things that can happen during games and events, but really our
- 2:10[SPEAKER_02]: But early in my career, I started to realize, should I just treat or should I look at preventing injuries?
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: So after a minor league baseball, I kind of gravitated to the fitness industry for my next part of my career because I wanted to have a young family and realize that,
- 2:25[SPEAKER_02]: fitness was behind sports medicine.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: So even still today, I could link most of the trends in fitness back to sports medicine.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll kind of walk through that here as I go through my career.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_02]: So I did the private country clubs down here, southeast Florida, got my master's degree in really rehabilitative sciences and performance enhancement.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_02]: And at the same time, I was taking all
- 2:51[SPEAKER_02]: fell in love with it because it was an evidence-based system.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, there's my toolbox.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want a bunch of tools.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_02]: I want a system.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: So this was 2,000, 2,000, 1 through 2004 and you know, I was one of those guys that had to bring a foam roller into the gym.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, people thought I was nuts, right?
- 3:10[SPEAKER_02]: And I became a master trucker, friend ASM, still I'm to this day have taught their curriculum, written their curriculum, travel globally.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, getting people to understand that movement is critical that it is a predictable biomarker.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: Our knees and hips and shoulders can tell a story, right, in our core, and we can create a system on improving that through corrective strategy, stabilization, then strength, then power.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_02]: So in 2007, I got to interview and got the big league strength from the Eastern
- 3:44[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and this is where my part of saying that, you know, fitness eventually catches up with sports performance.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_02]: So in 2007, they never foam roll before if you can believe that, right?
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: They never had massage gun.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: So I had a $3,000 massage gun in those days dollars.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_02]: I had a plug into a wall.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: So these were things that we were doing then with movement assessments, but it was still cutting edge if you can believe that in its fourth performance then.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: Did that for a period of time?
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: It was a very interesting time in baseball with coming off the steroids in that whole era.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Then got back out of baseball, went into fitness again, finished up my doctorate, and then this January, I started as a chief movement officer for Keynotek.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, let's go back to the expose for a second.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: That team is an existing more.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: But was it was Andre Dawson on that team?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_02]: Oh man, if you like baseball, there's a Netflix series that just came out and said, who destroyed the Montréal expose that end of that era was when I was getting in with the exposed in the mid 90s.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_02]: So if you go way back, you'd Gary Carbary at Andre Dawson, there was players, but when I was there in the mid 90s, they were about to go to the World Series probably when the strike happened.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_02]: But they had Pedro Martinez, they had Marquise Grissum, Cliff Floyd, Rondell, White, Darren Fletcher.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it was Vladimir Guerrero.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_02]: I had him in the minor leagues.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: And now he's a Hall of Famer.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_02]: His son is now, if you just watch the World Series, one of those guys.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_02]: So, we were phenomenal at developing talent.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, man, that's that's great.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: What a story.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: I am going to watch that because it is interesting.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: What did happen to them?
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: I never it is kind of disappeared I was obviously too young to know anything was going on behind the scenes, but I'm going to watch it.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: I know it's actually job.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's it.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's a baseball guy.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Marty.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's maybe like 18 months ago we decided to bring stretch therapy into our facility and seeing you stretch when they were coming out to teach our team they're like hey you got to get the keynote tech system and so that's when we first learned about it and when it when we started playing around with it I was like this is exactly what we
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: We teach for semi-private pro in our training system, which is movement quality.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like our whole entire system and how we score clients is all built around the client's movement quality and that's how we score them and then that's how we personalize their programming.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: And so when I learned about keynote tech, I was like, man, we got to figure out a way to bring the camera into our app.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the things that we talk, we always talk business systems and strategies and things on this podcast is what it's about is really business focused.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but that doesn't mean that we are any less focused on delivering, you know, equality in product to our clients, keeping them healthy, um, creating a journey for them where they can come in and start to square one, whether they have injuries or never worked out before.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: And we have a system in place to take that client and and progress them and get
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: and then turn them into a long-term client that is going to continue to stay with us.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the reasons we don't really do justice on this podcast or talk about it much is because it's just automatic.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's like we built the system.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's happening in the background.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: And we don't really even think about it that much.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think a lot of gyms are like that, you know, with that we talk to.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: They don't really have a system.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: for how they assess clients, for how they program for clients, for how they train.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, so often they just have a training staff and the trainers are programming and they have no control over it.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, you can give me, and I know we talked about this previously, like, you could give me one movement pattern, a bilateral, lower push.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to be able to design
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: four weeks of programming off that one exercise because we have a framework and a system for how we do it.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think that exists in our industry.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's like for the last
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: two decades of randomness and been throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks or what's going to be perceived as like difficult and sweaty and high energy is like been considered quality programming.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: And we know that's not the case.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: And now we're starting to see that, especially like the rise and fall of CrossFit, right?
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's like maybe maybe putting people in situations where they're going to get
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, there's a lot of great information unpacked there.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_02]: So first I'll start with kind of the science, right?
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: Science is always going to lead.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a science geek.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: I love the science, but boy, boy, do I love the business side of things?
- 9:06[SPEAKER_02]: We have to ring the cash register, right?
- 9:08[SPEAKER_02]: But if we ring the cash register, it's not just self-serving.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_02]: That means I'm serving more people, right?
- 9:14[SPEAKER_02]: So I have zero problem focusing on applying science to make a lot of money.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: And a lot of money can mean I have more trainers.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever it is, it's, I'm changing more people's lives, right?
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: So that's my mindset.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_02]: So the way I kind of view it is as a certified ethical trainer and I wish this was a little more hammered in in fitness.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_02]: Once I pass, they gotta get accepted in the program.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: 13 out of 100 people will get accepted.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: Nine of you will graduate.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: Only three of you will pass your national exam the first time, right?
- 9:44[SPEAKER_02]: At the end, when they do get through all that, they're like,
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: Don't screw anybody up.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_02]: They don't go tell you to fix the world.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_02]: They say the hypocritical don't hurt anybody So in fitness my my three rules are first do no harm
- 9:57[SPEAKER_02]: Number two is give them what they want, why they give them what they need.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_02]: They have zero idea, right?
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: The average client's not going to come in and say, Marty, I can't stabilize my foot in the transverse plane or when I, you know, do this, my deep and one more multifidist over fire.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_02]: No, they're like, I want to burn calories.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_02]: I want to build muscle.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_02]: I want to sweat cool.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_02]: I hear what you want, but I'm going to give you what you need.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: Why I'm an artist at this.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_02]: and give you what you want.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_02]: And then the third, of course, we have fun.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: So that's how I view it.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_02]: So the reason Kino Tech was so valuable to me is, you know, I'll give me example.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_02]: I have three boys, one of my twins is considering going through the fitness route.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_02]: Well, one of you didn't go to the traditional path I did to get all of the back end education.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_02]: So if I had to train him to see what I see, it's years of experience, right?
- 10:45[SPEAKER_02]: Which is cool?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_02]: I'm all about that.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_02]: But now with the technology of Keynotex, so what it is is we have a light art camera, it's a little camera, this, you know, a little bit bigger in your iPhone.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: It sends out an infrared signal, maps everything 360 degrees, instantly accurately, consistently, affordably, all I got to do is one motion now.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_02]: Whereas, if I was doing an overhead squad on you, I got to watch five to six from the front, make notes, five to six from the side, five to six from the back, correlate all this together, then I'd have to get you in a table, break out a goaniometer and say, okay, well, because he was restricted here, but with this movement, I can connect those
- 11:22[SPEAKER_02]: But can I do it in 45 seconds?
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: No.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: Can I do it as reproducibly as the camera?
- 11:27[SPEAKER_02]: Even I can't be as accurate.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_02]: So the beauty of the technology is one, it speeds up my process and takes things off my workload that I can go do more now of the things that I can be better at and do that a camera can't do.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_02]: Communicate with you, motivate you, get you in the gym, teach you.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_02]: But the beautiful thing about it is, if I did it myself, I can tell you what I saw, I can try to convince you of what I saw, I might be able to hold up a picture on my iPhone.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_02]: and then I'd have to go figure out the program and I can't even score you.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_02]: The next thing is, let's say, I like to do a test and retest.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: Let's say, I assess you, put you through the right program, brought you back and reassess you, you're gonna feel better.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_02]: But I can't fully show you, hey Zach, you had a eight degree asymmetry, now it's down to two, we're on the right path.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_02]: So why wouldn't I lean it to technology to do all that?
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: The other thing is, if you're a business operator, your coaches, your trainers don't need to take the time to even do the assessments anymore.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_02]: I can let a front desk desk do that, right?
- 12:30[SPEAKER_02]: So we can now get more and more people in the funnel.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_02]: I can take this out to the community and use it as a lead gen, right?
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: But you made a great point is like a crossfit.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_02]: I'm cool with it under these parameters.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: As I said, I'm an athletic trainer.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: I am highly trained to treat your injuries.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_02]: You will get injured if you play a sport.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_02]: There's not a sport that's safe for us orthopedically.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_02]: That's cool.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: I did mixed martial arts for him.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_02]: I played lacrosse.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: I did, I get it.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: But CrossFit is the sport of fitness.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: So, okay, if you want to be across the athlete, I will train you.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_02]: I will get you in the best shape to handle those positions that may not be biomechanically correct by my everyday world, but for the sport you're going to have to do those.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: So what I look at is if you're across that athlete, I'm going to work with you.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to fix you up.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to clean you up and hopefully the injuries are minor, mild, ish, but if you're a fitness person and you just want to get highly conditioned, I don't need to do that.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_02]: I can use those concepts and maybe I do it one arm snatch.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe I use a kettlebell right when it's time to do those things.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_02]: So that's how my brain works and but it all comes back down to how well do you move?
- 13:49[SPEAKER_02]: And that starts with assassins.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think that just as far as like the training industry goes, it's like majority of our clients are 40 plus, right?
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like they're, um, their goal is like they just want to
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: feel good, look good, they're trying to break records.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: They're not trying to compete.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so with the training, I think from helping people, but also from a sustainable business model, it's like, hey, how do we take Miss Johnson and make sure that she doesn't fall?
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: Or can get up the couch or get down on the floor with her grandkids?
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: And that's really,
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: I, in my opinion, like the future of the training industry is like, hey, let's focus on longevity, right, is like flash and flare.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, of course, you want to have fun and easy to be enjoyable for people.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, can we start placing more emphasis or focus on on the, the longevity for our clients versus like, hey, let's just get in a room and get sweaty.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, 100%.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: Here's the fun part about that is it's easier to chase new fitness goals when you move better, right?
- 15:14[SPEAKER_02]: So somebody comes in and like you said there between anywhere from even 30 now to 50, I'll be 53 around a corner.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_02]: but I have zero issues.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: I can do whatever I want to do because of my focus and my knowledge, right?
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, all of a sudden people may not have the goals that they should have because they're afraid, they're in pain, they've done this before and it's never worked out.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_02]: But like you said, I view it like my car, right?
- 15:41[SPEAKER_02]: If I walk in my garage and I have a hundred mile round trip and the indicator lights are on.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: Probably not going to drive that car.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to go ask my wife, hey, can I take your car?
- 15:49[SPEAKER_02]: My car needs its normal service.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_02]: The indicator lights you're telling me, your tires are out of balance, the oil needs to be changed.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_02]: Logically, you're not going to take that car and go a 100 miles an hour, hopefully no one does that.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_02]: But you're not going to try to drive it.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_02]: It's it is maximum.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to creep it.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: to the mechanic, let the mechanic put the computer on it and say, hey, what's my normal service I need to do, tune up the car and it's going to last longer but also perform better.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: So movement health, that's the concept I want people to get, is movement health is a biomarker.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_02]: Movement health will give me my longevity.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_02]: So longevity could be a 25 year old that's trying to play one more professional year.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_02]: Long-gevity could be for me at 53 keeping muscle mass on.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_02]: So as I age or broiling up my VO2 max.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I can never hit a state of fralty as I age.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever that is, but everybody's an athlete.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody needs longevity.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_02]: but you have to lift weights and you have to be able to increase your view to mat.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_02]: But going back to kind of the car analogy is if I do a movement assessment, let's just say a simple over its quad.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_02]: And I have a low back arch.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, doesn't mean I'm not going to train hard, but maybe a back squat isn't the right one because that's just compressing my lumbar spine so let's use that information to figure out a different way to load the body why I work on fixing that lumbar pelvic hip complex disorder and guess what all of a sudden well all I knew how to do before I trained was act was do a back spot my back hurts I'm not motivated.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_02]: Right, but all of a sudden now Zach puts me and starts to teach me what I need to do to fix that and to your tilt gives me a weight vas the TRX suspended squat something I can still do what I want to do and get it better work out, but all of a sudden I start getting to where I'm not in pain, my fitness goals can change all of a sudden.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: right?
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: Because I'm not destined to that poor movement.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not destined to those soft tissue injuries that I may have had before.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: So when you unlock that by properly assessing, properly programming all of a sudden, people come back and they're like, oh my God, and now those are your customers for life.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll finish with this.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_02]: Is that what someone can hold me accountable for as a fit is professional?
- 17:59[SPEAKER_02]: I will make you move better.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_02]: Don't hold me accountable necessary for 20 pound weight loss if you come see me two times a week for half hour.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: I can't make you burn enough calories.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_02]: But what I'm going to do is make you the best version of you program you and teach you what you need to do on your own.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_02]: But when somebody comes back from retention standpoint after six weeks,
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: You can see the improvement, and here's some of the physical things you've been able to do with VO2 max, lower body strength, whatever, that's a conversation where now that's what you can hold me accountable for, if you still need to lose the way, then we need to see what you're doing on the outside or why you're not coming in enough to do those extra, abouts of cardio or join a small group class, right, so that's what I like to try to kind of level set.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_00]: That's a hell of a point there, Marty, we do get held accountable in the fitness space for weight loss when most of that is out of our control, right?
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: When they go home, they go on vacation, they get out of hand, but movement, quality.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: Even strength, we could be held accountable for that type of metric, and I really believe man, this is something we should run on the front end for marketing purposes, so people understand like when he comes to us, when they come to gyms that use keynote tech and send my private pro.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: you're going to feel better, move better, period and their story.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: And we get away from those transformations, minded clients that are all about that weight loss.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: And we believe there's a catch way to that weight loss base.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: You you come in with a weight loss goal.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: One or two things happens that you're hit your goal.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: where you don't eat your goal, but both of those scenarios, the person leaves because they hit their goal they're done, where they didn't hit their goal they're upset and they're done, and kind of set yourself up for failure.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: But with this metric, this promise to the market, we got to hold another ballgame.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: We're bringing in the people that really want to be there for life.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and I love that.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and where I always say, because I'm an educator, too, I'm blessed.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_02]: Education fitness are the two race with no finish line.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_02]: No finish line, right?
- 20:17[SPEAKER_02]: I want to be more knowledgeable to more than I am today, all the way to my deathbed.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_02]: I have a lot of things I want to learn about, interested in, whatever, but same thing with fitness, I'm borrowing it.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_02]: Right, today's, if I'm in the best shape, I am ever, it's today and maybe a couple days, three to four days before I would start to lose some power or whatever whatever, so teaching people a mindset of listen, will work on your goals, but let's work on your mindset that this is a lifestyle and this is a race with no finish line, but it starts first with how do you move?
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: What barriers are there at the beginning that could be maybe you've worked against your whole life because you didn't know that, hey, every time I try to get aggressive, I get an anti-renet pain.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_02]: Well, yeah, because you have no ankle door selection and hip interrotation and your knee goes into valgus.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: How could you work out with intensity when you don't know what we know, right?
- 21:09[SPEAKER_02]: The best example is like people say, Marty, you've really nice teeth.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I know how to floss, I know how to brush.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not a dentist, so don't give me credit for nice teeth.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_02]: They're some genetics there, right?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_02]: That doesn't mean because I have a nice smile if you're gonna let me do work on you in your mouth.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_02]: but people come into our gyms, which is our work environment.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, you'll sweat, you'll burn some calories, you'll feel some muscles working.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: You could, and sadly, a bad program can still put muscle on you.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_02]: A bad program can still let you lose weight, but long-term, or maybe we could have done it more efficiently, more effectively, and got you new and better results.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: Because,
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: Sadly, they can experiment in our office, unlike us experimenting in our doctors, our lawyers, our dentist's office, right?
- 21:56[SPEAKER_02]: So we just need to set why we're professionals, and when you show some improvement health, they're like, I never knew.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not saying to do it to confuse them.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'm doing it saying it like, hey, here's what's truly going on.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_02]: And if we address this, boy, boy, can we address any other fitness goal you have?
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: Fantastic.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_01]: This is one of the things that when we built some of my private pro, we really did it for kind of two reasons.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: Number one was we wanted to make our coaches more efficient on the training floor.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, in some my private private, I don't like the term small group.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think that gets, you know, it's a use in our industry and I'm like, to me, that just means everybody's doing the same thing.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: And they're just a smaller group of people.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: Some my private is like, it's personal training.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's just done in a setting where a coach is working with multiple people.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: you know, at the same time.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: And in that environment, it's like, well, that creates some challenges because everybody's doing something a little bit different, different exercises, that type of thing.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: And so we created the app where it's like, hey, a coach can has a control panel.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: They control it.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: Please program everything.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: our client's workouts were displayed up on tablets, so a coach can quickly go from person to person, right?
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: So their attention has spent coaching, focusing on forming all those things and everything flows well.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: The other reason was to really implement consistency across our coaches.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_01]: So they were delivering the same exact program in product for the client at the same exact time.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: One thing that we realized after we implemented this, which was not an initial intention, was displaying the client's workouts for them.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: and having them be able to see their progressions and moving from what we would call like a minus three to a minus two, to a plus one, and it's all based off of movement quality and capability was,
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: immensely important from a client journey and retention standpoint, because now the client starting to go, well, okay, I just, you know, move from a kettlebell to two kettlebell.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: How do I get to a barbell?
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what's the process for that?
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: And then we can explain to a, well, here's what we're seeing currently, here's what we need to see in order for you to progress to that next level and so there's always kind of this like carrot that's this post that's moving.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: And that's one of the things that I feel like is so important with keynote tech now is.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's creating consistency across assessments with clients, but clients can also see the reports, right?
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: So we can show the client, instead of just telling the client, hey, here's what we're saying, we can show the client, hey, here's what a camera and technology is saying.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not subjective to the coach.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's objective data.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but it just adds this layer of value and that's one thing that we we realize after the fact, and I think it's the same thing with with keynote tech is it you get the movement reports and it adds this later layer of data and.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: It just differentiates you from a standpoint of like, hey, the quality of training that we have here is so much higher than our competition, you know, and here's the journey that we're taking you on and the things that we're looking at and we, this is why we charge X versus the guy down the street that's, you know, trying to drop their price to, you know, $2 a workout or whatever.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah now.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I know that's genius and like I never sold personal training once in my life.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_02]: I just educated and then it was an exchange of how do I help you, right?
- 25:58[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, I've always said you got to earn the right.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_02]: So, in my brain works in a very linear manner, right?
- 26:04[SPEAKER_02]: So, think about kids.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_02]: You go from preschool, right, to kindergarten, to first grade, to second grade.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_02]: You get tested.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't mix martial arts for ever, finished my third degree backbub.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_02]: In start there, it was a white belt, one stripe, two stripes, test, yellow belt, right?
- 26:22[SPEAKER_02]: You just, so you progress, you progress, you progress, and some people's progressions a little bit quicker, some people's isn't, but with the report, right?
- 26:31[SPEAKER_02]: Let's say you get somebody who wants to do some explosive activities, and you show them their single like squat, we're like, you scored a 37.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_02]: it would be negligent of me to give you those exercises.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't mean you're not going to work out hard, doesn't mean you're not going to sweat, doesn't mean you're not going to get your goals, but I'm protecting you from you because you wouldn't know how to make these decisions.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, you want to do fill in the blank, right?
- 26:56[SPEAKER_02]: But until you go through these progressions and get into the
- 27:01[SPEAKER_02]: We have to have a conversation of is that the right thing for you at this time, right?
- 27:05[SPEAKER_02]: I can still make you burn a ton of calories, I can still make you build muscle, I can still make you sweat whatever you goll is, but you're progressing to earn the right to that, right?
- 27:15[SPEAKER_02]: And then when people look at the score, what are they going to say?
- 27:18[SPEAKER_02]: No, right?
- 27:19[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to be like, all right, so now you get buying on what I call the silly little things.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like, hey, Zach, you know, you keep telling me what this, but you didn't get here 10 minutes early and do your movement prep.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't see you grabbing a massage gun I didn't see you foam roll.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't see you do your bounce work.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't see you do your core activation, your targeted warmups.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_02]: And they're like, yeah, I know.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm just, I play the game as the rules are written.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_02]: Here's the science.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_02]: Here's where you are.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_02]: You're not going to get me to change.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_02]: We're still going to work.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_02]: We're still going to work hard.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm going to work within where your test shows me.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_02]: if you want to get further, I'll give you the answers, but now we got to make sure that you're sticking with it.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_02]: So that's why I think people are successful in business because you have stickiness, you have consistency, you have a system, people, they might fund an argue with you, like, oh, come on, just this time, right?
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: But they know they're being treated personally.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_02]: We've all gone to doctors, to restaurants,
- 28:22[SPEAKER_02]: Personally at a high level, boy, boy, do you remember that?
- 28:25[SPEAKER_02]: So same thing at fitness, right?
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: If I know every time I come in Zach or Tim, hey, I'm reading your report from last time, but boom, but boom, here's what you need to do.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_02]: They're paying attention to me.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_02]: And they're giving me something I couldn't do on my own, right?
- 28:39[SPEAKER_02]: And they're there to protect me.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_02]: So that's critical to me.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_02]: And then that's where we become fitness professionals.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: And that's where you get to charge like a professional.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's fantastic, man.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, for all the gym owners listening to this, take a hard look at what you're offering your clients at this point.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: I know you know a lot, but do they know that you know a lot and do they respect you enough for you to be charging like a fitness professional?
- 29:05[SPEAKER_00]: We all went to school and did all the things and got all the certifications and you believe you're the best at what you do.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: Ruts you wouldn't be in business, right?
- 29:14[SPEAKER_00]: And you wouldn't, you know, you worked for somebody else.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: that you're proud of, right, but you're not charging what it's worth because you can't explain what Marty's just broken down with the movement quality.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have the tools in place to produce the data that then allows you to be, you know,
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: not believed because it's not your word against theirs.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's the data, the data's the data's black and white.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: And so like you really, you get yourself off of the hook of like, hey, I need to prove that I know that this person's movement quality is poor because that's what I saw in versus, hey, this is what the data shows is the report.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: And then you can deliver the workouts that integrate now what we have is some of my private pro immediately the data then transitions and converts into the workout scores and then your workouts adjust down or up based on the scores that we created and they talk together.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: And now look at that product versus what you're currently offering.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_00]: And now make a decision whether or not you want to have best in class or just be another person in a red ocean that's offering fitness to the community and hoping like, hey, people like you better because your coaches are more fun, right?
- 30:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's a totally different conversation than what we're having here.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what we want to help you understand Jim owners that you can you can put yourself ahead of everybody else and charge more than everybody else.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_00]: community, right, in your area.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's about to agree more than here's the thing, man.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_02]: We all watch TV and CNBC in the morning.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_02]: Once the last time someone said technology is dying.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_02]: So tech is here.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: I got an Apple watch on.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I've got equipment that monitors my wattage and Mike this and my that.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_02]: So why would I not want to have that on my movement health?
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: This is where I live all day long, every minute of my life, right?
- 31:26[SPEAKER_02]: So people check for calories, you track their sleep.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, boy, oh boy, will they be interested in tracking their movement quality?
- 31:32[SPEAKER_02]: Because you're just saying, it's a snapshot in time.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_02]: I don't own that.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like I'm about to go to Dubai for a week, right?
- 31:37[SPEAKER_02]: So if I just say, hey, I'm on vacation and I sit on 25 hours of flights, my movement quality is going to go down.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't mean I should go rip back to the gym for get jet lag for a second and just do what I was doing.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_02]: Or do I do my homework, do I make sure I prep so hopefully I come back within my range, you know, and here's the kicker.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of assessments people do that may be talked to me in six weeks.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_02]: movement health is truly the only one that I can think of that I'll make a change in you that shows you among the right track within three minutes.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's not body mass.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's not how many calories you burn.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's not even grip strength, right?
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: grip strength is going to take a couple weeks to get better at or any other strength test.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: But if you move 10 out of 47, your feet turn out, you have a low back arch.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_02]: I spend six minutes with you.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'll see a temporary change.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_02]: You don't own it yet, but I'm showing you neurologically, I'm making your body move different, there's a there there.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_02]: So all of a sudden, wow, like in just six to eight minutes, I was able to move a little better.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, wait till you give me six weeks, eight weeks, ten weeks.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_02]: And like I said, if I need to hold you accountable, Tim, I haven't seen any a week, let's hit your movement health.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, you went down to 47.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: You know what that means, go over there, do your movement prep, whatever programming based on the business.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_02]: So that's what I love about it is it's that sensitive and it can change that quickly on a temporary, but then you'll see a range over a week or two, but I'm not going to weigh somebody when they come in and out of the gym because we,
- 33:08[SPEAKER_02]: like how many calories I'm on 250, 350, and we don't know if they're going to eat that day, hydration.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't matter that number, right?
- 33:17[SPEAKER_02]: Moved health is that sensitive.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_02]: And here's the thing.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: If I was with you Tim and I need to get buying and like Tim, here's what we're going to do.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_02]: Monday.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_02]: You're coming in.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_02]: I'm screening yet.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_02]: We're doing my workout and watching move better at the end of the workout.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_02]: Wednesday, you do what you want to do.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_02]: What you think you need to do, I'm going to bet you come in at a 50 and move and you leave moving at a 40.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_02]: Because what are people going to do?
- 33:37[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to feed into their compensation.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to feed into what they do well.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to feed into what they know that probably got them to move that poorly.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_02]: So imagine it's like, oh my god, I went from 50 to 60 with
- 33:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's really good point.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_01]: This is something.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: So it was one of the things and this isn't out yet guys.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we're working on it with keynote tech to bring in screenings.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_01]: that you can program screenings based off of the movement patterns of the workout.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_01]: So for your clients, I love the analogy of like, hey, if I fly to Dubai and I'm on a flight for 20, I'm not going to move as well.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I get off?
- 34:24[SPEAKER_01]: Well, people's movement quality changes day to day based off of what they did yesterday or, you know, how hydrated they are, et cetera, et cetera.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're building it in where it's like, hey, here's the workout that you have programmed.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: I want to do these three movement screenings ahead of time.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_01]: and for a gym right now that can be a challenge you have 200 clients and you know you're going to see 80 of them in a day it's like how can you you know screen everybody before work out you really can't you know but we're working with keynote tech on doing a straight from a tablet on the rack
- 34:59[SPEAKER_01]: We can say, hey, your work outs over there before we start, you know, go do these three movement screenings, they screen it updates their scores and we know exactly what to do with that client today based off of their movement quality.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's what we're so excited about is like that level of of.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_01]: specificity at scale is, you know, to me it's going to be a game changer for the training industry.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_01]: So really excited.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_02]: And people are bad at driven now, right?
- 35:32[SPEAKER_02]: Every app has some type of score, you know, to mean even Uber, you're like, oh, my 496, number 497, people love numbers.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_02]: And when you teach them the importance of their movement house score,
- 35:44[SPEAKER_02]: You know, trust me, they're going to be more focused and you may think about it.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_02]: Be like, hey, let's see how I'm moving today.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_02]: I feel good or whatever, which again, gets violent in communication and loyalty to your gym, but you know, I always like to say what gets measured gets monitored, right?
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: So if you want someone to focus on how well they move, if you're not measuring it, good luck trying to convince them.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_02]: put a score to it.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: And now it's easier to say, hey, let's keep working.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_02]: We got to get you to that 60, that's 62, 64, right?
- 36:16[SPEAKER_02]: You've made 20 points.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_02]: You made 15 points.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_02]: You're feeling better.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_02]: You move better.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_02]: But if you're just trying to convince them, that's what I had to do with the Yankees.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_02]: It was up till long.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_02]: They were like, I hit 35 home runs last year.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, I know, but your hips forward, right?
- 36:31[SPEAKER_02]: But they couldn't correlate it, right?
- 36:33[SPEAKER_02]: Because, like I said, I'm going by what I saw
- 36:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, very point.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_00]: What a great conversation guys, and Jim Motors listen, um,
- 36:44[SPEAKER_00]: the game's changing like I said right at the beginning you have to do better right we we get education around all this stuff but you have no way to implement it that's now changing we've got a solution for you guys so if you guys want more information about keynote tech about semi-private pro about how they work together as an integration to deliver a solid
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: product on the training for.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: We'll put some links in the show notes for you guys.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: You guys can go grab those, book a call.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_00]: We'd love to help you guys create that product.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: So you can't beat your competition.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: This is a business, but business like sports, it's you against them, right?
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody's going for that same person in the market.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: Mine's will be you, right?
- 37:30[SPEAKER_00]: So Martin, I appreciate you jumping on with us and kind of breaking all this down and, you know, this is, I mean, hopefully gets the Jimmer's wheels turning about what is possible in today's market, what we have with the technology.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: And somebody wants to get a hold of keynote tech, what's the best way to do that?
- 37:47[SPEAKER_02]: Just our website is keynote tech, k-i-n-o-t-e-k.com.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: You can always email me at marty.miller at keynotetech.com.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: And here's my prediction because I know we're doing it.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_02]: Is movement health will be the fifth vital sign.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_02]: You will see a national push just like HRV.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_02]: Just like some of these other measurements, the longevity docs out there.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to be talking about movement health.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_02]: So,
- 38:14[SPEAKER_02]: Tim, to your point, Zach, why wouldn't you want to be the first on your block to be doing something that's going to become a pretty cool trend pretty soon?
- 38:22[SPEAKER_02]: Very cool.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, thanks for leading the charge.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: Marty, thanks for sharing on the great insight information.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: Zach has always appreciate you, man.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's it for this episode.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody, hopefully that helps you get the wheels turning until next time.
