- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for July 29, 2026 Silent Killers How Withdrawal and Contempt Destroy Marriage,
- 0:08Jay Stringer talked about the damage done to marriages when people justify withdrawal
- 0:12or contempt. Let's look at those things.
- 0:16Withdrawal means pulling away, shutting down emotionally, and or stopping all
- 0:20but the most necessary communication.
- 0:22As withdrawal will result in not engaging when there is friction,
- 0:26the lack of arguing is sometimes mistaken for being a good thing.
- 0:30But it's not growth or agreement. It just means the person no longer cares.
- 0:34An apathy is a marriage killer.
- 0:36Withdrawal usually means less physical touch. No longer is there snuggling when
- 0:41going to sleep or waking up.
- 0:43It will likely also mean less sexual engagement.
- 0:46Beyond the physical, it means less emotional interaction.
- 0:49There is less concern for the other's spouse and a lack of support.
- 0:53Other times all these things seem to be present, but it's really just going through the motions.
- 0:58Withdrawal is a marriage emergency. Left untreated, it will end your marriage
- 1:02even if it doesn't lead to divorce.
- 1:04The problem is the one who has withdrawn no longer cares And is not particularly
- 1:08interested in getting help If you see withdrawal developing,
- 1:11act quickly If it's already set in, get help You're going to need it,
- 1:16Contempt can come out as mockery or sarcasm It can be cruel humor,
- 1:21name-calling, or ugly accusations Or it could be as simple as rolling the eyes
- 1:25Or making grunts of disgust.
- 1:27Contempt is a poison Marriage expert John Gottman says it is the single greatest
- 1:32predictor of divorce This makes contempt an even greater emergency than withdrawal.
- 1:37If you realize you are guilty of contempt, deal with it, and be brutal about
- 1:41it. If you know what you use to justify contempt, deal with that.
- 1:45Be on the lookout for contempt, and shut it down at the first hint.
- 1:49Beyond that, apologize.
- 1:51Don't explain or tell your spouse why, just say you were wrong.
- 1:54Tell them that they don't deserve to be treated that way, and you're deeply sorry.
- 1:58If you're the recipient of contempt, I'd suggest you get help.
- 2:01You might try calmly saying, I feel contempt in how you're speaking to me. What's going on?
- 2:06It's unlikely to make a difference in the moment, but if you don't get angry,
- 2:09your spouse might think about it later and realize they were out of line.
- 2:13Nothing your spouse does justifies these marriage-killing actions.
- 2:17Are you guilty of either?
- 2:19This is Paul, and doing marriage well means treating your spouse well.
