Latest / SECOND CLOCK™ / SEASON 8 | TRUSTING ONESELF
Transcript
- 0:01What if you learned that the time was always now to make a
- 0:04choice, change direction, choose you.
- 0:07But where do you start and how will you know when you got
- 0:09there? That's what the second clock is.
- 0:12It's a time to try, the chance to experience everything you
- 0:16wish you had but haven't yet. A time to re evaluate where you
- 0:20are and where you're headed while letting go of ideas of
- 0:23what you should be doing, who you think you need to be, and
- 0:26realize who you are. Now join me, click follow, like
- 0:31and subscribe and let's see where this leads.
- 0:37Throughout the last few years I've been toying with this one
- 0:40concept. It's trust.
- 0:44On one side is loyalty and the other side is betrayal.
- 0:51And I think for the most part, we all know this.
- 0:53For some of us, to trust is easy.
- 0:57For me, it always was probably a little too easy.
- 1:01I think I was trusting blindly. And for others, we build walls
- 1:05and we're weary of everyone. And for them to trust, it takes
- 1:09time and it needs to be earned. But there's a different type of
- 1:13trust that I've been thinking about.
- 1:16That's the one that I've been contemplating more and more, and
- 1:20that's trusting one's instincts, trusting 1's decisions to make
- 1:25decisions that are good for them, that are aligned.
- 1:29I think for many of us, we just move.
- 1:33We move through our morning, through our day, through our
- 1:35week, through the months, the years, and we're not thinking
- 1:41too much about trust or thinking about what's aligned within our
- 1:44routine. We're just moving.
- 1:48At least for me, that's what I did.
- 1:52That's what got me here. Well, I should say that's what
- 1:56got me through most of my life. Until one day I felt like, what
- 2:01if I needed to care? What if I needed to make sure
- 2:04that what I was doing was right? Not just right for everybody
- 2:08around me, but right for me, for the direction that I wanted to
- 2:12head in. And what was that direction
- 2:16again? It went back to trust, trusting
- 2:19that other people knew what was best for me, thinking that
- 2:23everybody knew what was best for everybody.
- 2:26And if I just followed along and listened intently to what
- 2:29everybody was telling me to do, everyone's advice, including
- 2:33what was around me in magazines and books and movies, friends,
- 2:38family, even extended friends of family, well, then I was going
- 2:42to get it right, get life right. But that meant that I didn't
- 2:47lean on myself. I didn't need to.
- 2:51The trust that I could have been forming with my decision making,
- 2:54with my instincts, was being replaced by other people, their
- 2:58ideas, their solutions. And where did that get me?
- 3:03Well, it got me doing what everybody was doing, doing
- 3:07what's expected, following the norms, until one day, I don't
- 3:13really know what happened, but I just didn't want to feel like I
- 3:18was going along for the ride. I wanted to feel like I was
- 3:22making choices. I guess it was time to trust and
- 3:26put the trust back in me. And for the last several years,
- 3:30I've been working on that, tuning into what feels right in
- 3:34the moment, what feels good, what makes sense for me, what's
- 3:39aligned and trusting my gut, figuring out what's right and
- 3:45what's not. And sometimes it doesn't happen
- 3:48in the moment. Sometimes I wish it would.
- 3:51And sometimes I surprise myself because I listen intently in the
- 3:56moment, whereas in the past I was just so busy going that
- 4:01listening to me and what I wanted was an afterthought.
- 4:06Recently, I found myself going along for the ride.
- 4:09Literally. I was in Disneyland.
- 4:13I was afforded tickets to Disney After Dark and I don't really go
- 4:17on rides, but I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity.
- 4:21But the fact remains that I really don't go on rides.
- 4:26So when the end of the night was coming, I just said to my
- 4:28friend, I know I haven't been much fun.
- 4:31You've gone on every ride by yourself, so I'll go with you on
- 4:35the Ferris wheel. By then I was getting really
- 4:37tired. This event was from 9:00 to 1:00
- 4:39in the morning and I pull long days as it is.
- 4:43I usually I'm getting up at 5 or 6.
- 4:46So even with that nap that I took before going to Disney, I
- 4:49was starting to feel it. Feeling the fatigue set in and I
- 4:53knew that I had a 40 minute drive ahead of me to get home.
- 4:56When we approached the Ferris wheel, I had no idea that there
- 4:59was two options for the carriage.
- 5:02There was the swinging one or the stationary one.
- 5:06In my mind, there was only one option, the stationary 1.
- 5:10And in my friend's mind there was only one option, this
- 5:13swinging one. Well, I didn't realize the one
- 5:16that he had signed me up to until we're halfway through the
- 5:19line and I see carriages over our head swinging and I hear
- 5:23people screaming. And I said to my friend, which
- 5:27line are we on? And he said, oh, the swinging
- 5:30side, that's the side I like. And I said I like the stationary
- 5:34one. I can't possibly do this one.
- 5:37And he said, Oh well, the line for that one is over there.
- 5:40And for whatever reason I didn't think about what I wanted and
- 5:44why I was doing this. I just thought he gave me a
- 5:47solution. Great, I'll go get on that line
- 5:50and leave him thinking, well, this way he can do what he wants
- 5:55and I can do what I want. Everybody wins.
- 5:58The only problem is something that I wouldn't see in the
- 6:01moment that maybe you guys see so obviously that I would only
- 6:05recognize later, is that I was only going on a ride to go with
- 6:09my friend. I didn't really want to go on a
- 6:11Ferris wheel, but here I am just going, going along with whatever
- 6:16somebody told me. They came up with a good
- 6:18solution and off I go. And with that simple example of
- 6:23me and a ride at Disneyland with a friend, it shows how I made
- 6:29decisions, how I went along, how I didn't listen to what it was
- 6:35that I wanted or even realize what the point of something was
- 6:39in the moment. And it makes sense how I got so
- 6:43far, for so long. I just went along before I
- 6:49started to think about what I wanted.
- 6:52And there I was at 12 in the morning, standing on line for a
- 6:55ride I didn't want to take and going to be a single rider on a
- 6:59Ferris wheel. As I went up, up, up and around
- 7:04I thought how did I get here? Not just how did I get on this
- 7:09ride, but how did I agree to do something I didn't even want to
- 7:12do that badly in the 1st place? Why didn't I stop and say you
- 7:17know what, taking this ride without you doesn't make any
- 7:20sense. Instead I think I'm going to go
- 7:23home, I'm getting tired. But I didn't.
- 7:27I didn't say any of those things.
- 7:29Instead, I tried to do another ride after, and when that wasn't
- 7:33successful, I left in a huff. Any chance of having shared fun
- 7:39was now replaced with resentment, and it's in those
- 7:43moments that I know that I stayed too long.
- 7:47There's been a few times in my life when I can say that I got
- 7:50out early. Just in time, actually.
- 7:54Because I will tell you that when resentment sets in, it's
- 7:57very hard. It clouds everything.
- 8:00It clouds the way you see situations, the way you see how
- 8:04you handled things and the way you see other people.
- 8:08And I know that when those situations come up, I find that
- 8:11it's best to act fast. My friend recently was asking me
- 8:16when I decided to end my marriage, did I do it because I
- 8:19wanted to know what was on the other side?
- 8:21Did I think the grass was greener?
- 8:24And I told her no, I didn't do it for that reason.
- 8:28I did it because for once, I finally was thinking about what
- 8:32I wanted. I wasn't just going along like I
- 8:35had for so long. Now let me be clear, there's
- 8:39nothing wrong with going along with what you've been going
- 8:41along with for so long, as long as it's good and healthy and
- 8:45you're happy. But for me, life had just become
- 8:49expected. I didn't question things or
- 8:52challenge things. Things that I didn't know about
- 8:54people the way they were. The truth.
- 8:58And I think at my age, I should have known better.
- 9:02And I guess I just never took the opportunity or question
- 9:06things and tried to learn. And I think I just felt like I
- 9:11wasn't living enough. I wasn't experiencing enough.
- 9:14There were things that I still wanted to do, but I did leave
- 9:18for someone. I left for me.
- 9:22I left to find out what it was that I didn't know about myself,
- 9:26but I hadn't given myself the chance to learn.
- 9:29I wanted to trust in myself more.
- 9:32Trust that I could read people better, that I understood what
- 9:35was going on around me. That I knew what was right for
- 9:38me and that I could make good decisions for myself in the
- 9:42moment and not second guess. And if I took a chance, I knew
- 9:47that I could land on my feet. Because that's what trust
- 9:50brings, the awareness that you're making the right decision
- 9:55in the moment for yourself. And so when I left, I left
- 10:00before resentment set in and I left knowing that it didn't
- 10:04matter what was on the other side.
- 10:06I just knew that I was going to live a little bit more,
- 10:09experience more. And the older I get, the more I
- 10:13think that that's what life's about.
- 10:15Trying new things and taking chances.
- 10:18Ones that make sense for where you're at, ones that are going
- 10:22to help you grow, help you learn a little bit more about
- 10:24yourself, maybe the self that you don't even know yet.
- 10:30There was another time recently where I just made the decision
- 10:33to leave, and I left early enough where I wasn't wishing
- 10:37that I had left even earlier. And that was at a retreat.
- 10:41I was traveling for the first time by myself, and the only
- 10:44place that I had planned to go and meet up with people was that
- 10:47a retreat? But when I was there, I was
- 10:51flooded with memories of summer camp.
- 10:54I've talked about this before. When you're younger and you get
- 10:57sent to summer camp, or you get sent to classes or school, your
- 11:01best bet is to assimilate as fast as possible.
- 11:04Figure out commonalities, find people that you can be friends
- 11:08with. But I also know that with summer
- 11:11camp, there's a lot of things that are forced in it too.
- 11:15You're forced to share time when maybe you don't want to.
- 11:19You're forced to make friends with people that maybe you don't
- 11:21have much in common with, and you do it because you need to
- 11:24fit in. You need to get through.
- 11:28Or at least that was what I used to think.
- 11:30But here I am at a retreat that I signed up for, and I'm not
- 11:34young and I'm not in summer camp, so none of those same
- 11:37rules applied, although I felt the instincts to try to fit in,
- 11:42to try to make friends creeping in.
- 11:46And the more I felt it, the more I realized I don't want to join
- 11:49in all these reindeer games. I think I'm OK going at this
- 11:53alone. I think I'm OK really embracing
- 11:57what it is to solo travel. I don't want to get stuck in
- 12:00gossip, judgement, drama and plans taking too long to make
- 12:06where everybody's waiting for everybody else to make a
- 12:08decision. And all of that was starting to
- 12:11become exhausting. And in my day-to-day life, I
- 12:15don't have that. So why on vacation would I ever
- 12:19welcome that in? So I made the choice to leave,
- 12:23and I left early. And I left really comfortable
- 12:27with my decision because when I left, I knew it was because I
- 12:31was welcoming and new experiences, new things that I'd
- 12:34never done. And I guess that's my new life
- 12:38in a nutshell. Trying or before.
- 12:43It was about fear. It was about holding back.
- 12:45It was about listening to others going along for the ride.
- 12:50I guess I'm proud of that decision.
- 12:53The decision to trust myself and not trust in something I signed
- 12:57up to or the group and put myself in a disadvantage or make
- 13:01myself unnecessarily uncomfortable.
- 13:04I guess I was going for something that was aligned.
- 13:07And I wonder why we don't do that more often.
- 13:10Why is it that I stood on a line for a Ferris wheel when I didn't
- 13:14even want to go on that ride? Why is it that I stepped foot in
- 13:17that carriage for the solo rider and took the ride?
- 13:23I don't know. But in that moment I was
- 13:26operating with my old operating system, something that had
- 13:30served me well until one day it didn't.
- 13:32And I have to say, at midnight on a Monday, it didn't serve me
- 13:36well. And it wasn't until that drive
- 13:39home when I was dozing in and out of sleep that I realized by
- 13:44staying so late, I put myself in an unsafe situation.
- 13:48And for what? Why was I just going along,
- 13:52going along with somebody else's solution, thinking that it was
- 13:56right for me when really it wasn't right for him or I?
- 14:00It was just an option. A lot of decisions are made that
- 14:04way. Somebody throws out an idea, a
- 14:07solution, an option, and the next thing you know, people are
- 14:12following along blindly sometimes and not always keeping
- 14:17in mind the objective. I know this because when I talk
- 14:21to people, they'll say, I don't know why I signed up for this.
- 14:24I don't know why I stayed so long.
- 14:27I don't know why I didn't leave. I don't know what I was doing
- 14:30thinking that I was happy there. I wasn't.
- 14:34You'll hear people say later, I wish I had said no in the
- 14:38moment, why didn't I speak up? And it goes back to trust.
- 14:44Trusting yourself in those moments, trusting that you make
- 14:48good decisions, Trusting that some people don't have the
- 14:51answers, or maybe they don't have the answers that are right
- 14:54for you. And the way you get those
- 14:57answers is by listening. Listening intently to your
- 15:01emotions when all of a sudden you feel something rise in you.
- 15:06Maybe anxiousness, tension, frustration, fear.
- 15:13That's your alarm bells going off saying this isn't right.
- 15:17Say something, do something, leave.
- 15:22But for so many years, I stayed quiet.
- 15:26I didn't do anything different and I didn't leave.
- 15:32So I get it. I get that it's a challenge.
- 15:36But just like with anything, repetition, it helps you get
- 15:40better. Get better at making choices
- 15:43that are aligned for yourself. Get better at speaking up in the
- 15:46moment. Get better at listening to what
- 15:49it is that you need and saying something.
- 15:53Get better at trusting yourself. Because if you're trying to
- 15:56figure out what's next for you, how do you keep your thoughts,
- 16:00your needs in focus? And then just remember, if trust
- 16:05lives between loyalty and betrayal, start there.
- 16:09Don't betray yourself. Instead, choose loyalty to
- 16:14yourself. Thanks for listening.
- 16:19These episodes are unscripted. They're my free flowing thoughts
- 16:23as I reflect back on past conversations, experiences, what
- 16:28I've learned, would like to do better, and what's next.
