- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for April 2nd, 2026 Winning the argument versus winning
- 0:05the marriage. Stop fighting dirty.
- 0:08One big way our parents' marriage programmed us is how we communicate.
- 0:12If your folks screamed at each other, there's a good chance you do the same
- 0:16and don't see that as a problem.
- 0:17But some people go the other direction, becoming super sensitive to not only
- 0:22loud, but also passionate or energetic conversation.
- 0:25Differences about this can be a massive marriage issue.
- 0:29She yells naturally, but he feels abused when she does so. He becomes animated,
- 0:33and she feels threatened.
- 0:35They are unable to communicate because one is too busy dealing with feeling
- 0:39disrespected or attacked to hear the words being shared.
- 0:42The obvious solution is for the louder or more animated spouse to dial it back,
- 0:46but that's a very difficult thing to do.
- 0:48They communicate as they do because it's how they were taught to deal with differences
- 0:53since before they can even remember. Then there's another issue.
- 0:56Because of what one spouse saw growing up, toxic communication may have become normalized.
- 1:02Examples include swearing or ugly words, baseless accusations or questions of
- 1:08integrity, strong sarcasm, Dramatic exits with slamming doors.
- 1:13Leaving for hours with no communication.
- 1:16The silent treatment possibly continued until the other caves.
- 1:20Withholding affection or sex. Refusing to do household tasks you have both agreed are your job.
- 1:27Pushing it even further, there's the destruction of property,
- 1:30which is crossing into abuse. None of these are designed to facilitate communication.
- 1:35They are not about discussing things. They are about winning by beating the other person down.
- 1:40Its words is warfare, and all is fair in war. One particularly bad version of
- 1:45this is the divorce threat.
- 1:46We know a woman who threatened divorce every time she and her husband got into an argument.
- 1:51Outside of fights, she said she didn't mean it. But it cut him each time she
- 1:54did it, which is probably why she kept doing it.
- 1:57All this is about winning an argument.
- 1:59But if you win, that means your spouse loses.
- 2:02And if either of you loses, your marriage loses.
- 2:05Each argument you have of your spouse is an opportunity to move closer together.
- 2:09But to achieve that, you have to get rid of your tactics and your desire to
- 2:13win. The next time you argue, don't try to win.
- 2:16Honestly express your thoughts and feelings as non-confrontationally as you can.
- 2:21Listen to your spouse and ask for clarification when you don't understand.
- 2:25Then work towards understanding and look for a way to move forward that allows
- 2:29both of you to feel heard and respected.
- 2:31This is Paul, and both of you winning is Doing Marriage Well.
