- 1:03Speaker 2: Welcome back to another one of our money daries.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Where I get the absolute pleasure of sitting down with
- 1:08Speaker 4: one of our She's on the Money community members to
- 1:11Speaker 4: talk all about their journey. Let's jump straight into it,
- 1:14Speaker 4: because this week I got a message and it sounded
- 1:17Speaker 4: like this, Hi V. I have a pretty unique career
- 1:21Speaker 4: in a male dominated industry and live an island life
- 1:25Speaker 4: in a very remote part of Australia. I have a
- 1:27Speaker 4: lot to say about the inflated cost of living due
- 1:30Speaker 4: to my location. But I've worked my way up and
- 1:33Speaker 4: negotiated a forty thousand dollars pay rise in the last
- 1:36Speaker 4: six months. I'd love to share my less than average
- 1:39Speaker 4: lifestyle with the community.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Same. Welcome to the show.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Hah, thank you so much for having me while you
- 1:44Speaker 5: make my life sound pretty interesting.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You wrote that.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Oh no, Analisa, our producer, wrote that, So I told
- 1:51Speaker 4: you she was a good egg.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Before we were.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Recording, I was talking about how great she is. But
- 1:55Speaker 4: that is it, though, Like, where is the lie, my friend?
- 1:59Speaker 5: Yeah, it's true. That is my life at the moment.
- 2:01Speaker 4: I'm so excited to learn more about it before we
- 2:04Speaker 4: get there. Could you give us a little bit of
- 2:06Speaker 4: an idea. What grade would you give your money habits
- 2:09Speaker 4: from A three to F if I asked you to
- 2:11Speaker 4: grade them?
- 2:12Speaker 5: Yeah, so I was thinking a B plus I think
- 2:15Speaker 5: with some of your money habits at the moment.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Well, let's learn more about it.
- 2:19Speaker 4: You said you have an island life in a very
- 2:21Speaker 4: remote part of Australia, and I want to know more
- 2:24Speaker 4: about your money story.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So tell me where you come from and now why
- 2:28Speaker 2: you're on an island.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Yeah. So I live in a really remote island in
- 2:32Speaker 5: the north of Australia, which is about as north as
- 2:34Speaker 5: you can get. Actually, it is a beautiful lifestyle, you know.
- 2:38Speaker 5: It's a very slow lifestyle, and I've managed to fall
- 2:41Speaker 5: into a career up here that I never thought i'd
- 2:43Speaker 5: fall into. But it's going very well and I'm really
- 2:45Speaker 5: enjoying it and feeling very blessed to have this job.
- 2:48Speaker 5: So yeah, island life is absolutely incredible, but it doesn't
- 2:51Speaker 5: come without its difficulties. You know. Cost of living up
- 2:55Speaker 5: here is definitely felt a little bit more just because
- 2:59Speaker 5: we're so remote and things are shipped in from very
- 3:02Speaker 5: far away.
- 3:03Speaker 2: How did you grow up around money.
- 3:05Speaker 5: I was raised in a single parent family, so there
- 3:08Speaker 5: was definitely never a lot of money while I was
- 3:10Speaker 5: growing up. But in saying that, my mum is incredible.
- 3:13Speaker 5: She's always managed to provide everything that myself and my
- 3:17Speaker 5: brother needed, so I definitely learned a lot of my
- 3:20Speaker 5: money habits from her. She was a great saver and
- 3:23Speaker 5: instilled those beliefs around money and me and my brother.
- 3:27Speaker 5: So after school, I went to university and I lived
- 3:29Speaker 5: the university life, which is never a very wealthy life.
- 3:33Speaker 5: I was living out a home in Melbourne and working
- 3:36Speaker 5: to support myself through that, and after graduating UNI, I
- 3:39Speaker 5: kind of thought, well, an office job isn't for me,
- 3:43Speaker 5: So I led Melbourne and I came to Queensland and
- 3:46Speaker 5: I've been working on boats ever since.
- 3:48Speaker 2: On boats. That's interesting. I love this.
- 3:52Speaker 4: So tell me a bit more about the decision to go.
- 3:55Speaker 4: You know, I don't want to live an office job.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I want something else going you.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Know, what is for me a boat?
- 4:02Speaker 4: Like how did you go from you know, making that decision,
- 4:05Speaker 4: from being in UNI, which is relatively structured, let's be honest,
- 4:09Speaker 4: to having obviously a much quieter life, but also working
- 4:13Speaker 4: in that space.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Yeah. So I was actually working hospitality when I was
- 4:17Speaker 5: in university, and when it came towards my graduation, I
- 4:21Speaker 5: was like, you know, I didn't see myself growing straight
- 4:24Speaker 5: to an office role. So I was thought, well, I'm
- 4:26Speaker 5: going to go work in a hospitality venue somewhere a
- 4:28Speaker 5: bit more tropical. So I actually applied for a job
- 4:31Speaker 5: on Hamilton Island and I was unsuccessful getting that job,
- 4:35Speaker 5: and I was like, well, actually, maybe hospitality isn't for me.
- 4:38Speaker 5: So I started applying for some sail boat jobs in
- 4:41Speaker 5: the with Sundays. They hired me. So I started off
- 4:45Speaker 5: as a hostess on one of the tourism boats up there.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Oh very cool.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Yeah, there was about five years ago now and so
- 4:51Speaker 5: it's just progressed from that.
- 4:52Speaker 4: So tell me a bit more. I need to know
- 4:54Speaker 4: what do you do for work? How much money do
- 4:56Speaker 4: you actually earn?
- 4:57Speaker 5: So I work in marine pilotice. Oh yeah, bit of
- 5:00Speaker 5: an unusual job. I at the moment am earning just
- 5:04Speaker 5: over one hundred k year.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 5: We drive boats and we go out to the middle
- 5:09Speaker 5: of a shipping channel where we run into the side
- 5:11Speaker 5: of a big ship that's still moving.
- 5:13Speaker 2: We run into the side of a big ship moving, Yeah, exactly.
- 5:16Speaker 5: We kind of just smash into the side. If there's
- 5:19Speaker 5: a bit of a bang, it's all right. And then
- 5:22Speaker 5: we put a very experienced mariner onto that ship so
- 5:25Speaker 5: he can navigate it through the reef.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I've heard of this.
- 5:28Speaker 4: They're good pilots, but they've never been through that territory
- 5:31Speaker 4: and you need someone who's like really familiar with it
- 5:33Speaker 4: to like just get on for a short period of
- 5:35Speaker 4: time navigate through that and then they get off right.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that is cool. So how did you fall
- 5:42Speaker 2: into that.
- 5:43Speaker 4: I mean, it's a bit of a jump to go
- 5:44Speaker 4: from a hostess on a boat to being in marine pilotage. Like,
- 5:49Speaker 4: what's the segue there, my friend.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Yeah, it was quite random how it happened. I moved
- 5:54Speaker 5: to the island where I'm living now, and I met
- 5:56Speaker 5: up with a friend that I'd known previously from the
- 5:59Speaker 5: marine industry, and she was working for this company already,
- 6:02Speaker 5: and so she got me a job. And I started
- 6:04Speaker 5: out as a casual decand that was almost two years
- 6:08Speaker 5: ago now, and now I'm the assistant manager two years later.
- 6:12Speaker 2: No, you're not, I am. That is so cool. Congrats.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Tell me a bit more about island life though.
- 6:19Speaker 4: I want to segue back to this because living remote
- 6:21Speaker 4: full stop is expensive, but then I feel like it
- 6:24Speaker 4: might be super expensive living remote, but then also on
- 6:27Speaker 4: an island.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So can you tell me a.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Bit about I guess your living situation. How do you
- 6:32Speaker 4: rent and pay for housing or do you pay for housing?
- 6:35Speaker 4: And you know what's food like because I'm assuming you
- 6:38Speaker 4: can't get any roots.
- 6:40Speaker 5: There's definitely no overeats. So that does help with my savings. Yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 5: so living on an island, it is very expensive. I
- 6:47Speaker 5: do want to say that you know, in my situation
- 6:50Speaker 5: with my work, I am very privileged because I do
- 6:52Speaker 5: have some things provided with my job. Food is probably
- 6:57Speaker 5: the biggest expense that I see. To be fair, I'm
- 7:00Speaker 5: probably a little bit of out of touch with mainland prices.
- 7:03Speaker 5: I mean, I understand that prices have gone up all
- 7:06Speaker 5: over Australia, but yeah, you know, living up here, for instance,
- 7:09Speaker 5: we're paying two dollars eighty five for a liter of fuel.
- 7:13Speaker 5: I went to a supermarket the other day and I
- 7:15Speaker 5: paid three dollars fifty for a tin of chopped tomatoes.
- 7:17Speaker 2: No, you didn't.
- 7:18Speaker 5: It's quite ridiculous.
- 7:20Speaker 2: That's like ninety nine cents. It colds for me.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Sorry, it's ridiculous. But everything that comes to the island
- 7:26Speaker 5: is brought up on a barge, so that just adds
- 7:29Speaker 5: a huge freight cost to all the products that are
- 7:31Speaker 5: brought to the island.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it would.
- 7:33Speaker 5: And also sometimes those products are just not available. Quality offecially,
- 7:38Speaker 5: fruit and vegetables can be quite low sometimes. I think
- 7:41Speaker 5: I paid ten dollars the other day for a very
- 7:43Speaker 5: average bunch of silver beat.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Of silver beat.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Yeah, that's not even like an expensive, exciting vegetable.
- 7:50Speaker 2: That's silver beat.
- 7:51Speaker 5: I know, but you still have to get your greens.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Oh I'm not disagreeing, Like, I actually really love a
- 7:56Speaker 4: bit of silver beat. I grew up on a farm,
- 7:57Speaker 4: and I feel like that stuff grows like wee there,
- 8:00Speaker 4: but paying ten bucks for it would give me the inck.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Yeah. Probably my largest expense is my grocery bill. Yeah
- 8:06Speaker 5: at the moment, Like I said, I am very lucky
- 8:09Speaker 5: in my job that things are provided for me. For instance,
- 8:12Speaker 5: I have a work car, so I don't have to
- 8:14Speaker 5: pay for my own car or fuel. Oh very nice,
- 8:16Speaker 5: And I understand that everybody on the island is not
- 8:19Speaker 5: privileged to that like we are.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 5: My rent is also subsidized by work, so I think
- 8:24Speaker 5: work subsidizes it by about three hundred dollars a week
- 8:27Speaker 5: and I still end up paying one seventy a week.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Okay, that's pretty good because that would be expensive rent otherwise.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it's really lucky to live on the island without
- 8:37Speaker 5: rent supplied by your work. It would be almost impossible
- 8:40Speaker 5: just because there is no accommodation available.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Work also covers most of my bills, so they pay
- 8:46Speaker 5: for my gas and my water and my internet and
- 8:50Speaker 5: the only bill I have to pay for myself is
- 8:52Speaker 5: my electricity.
- 8:53Speaker 4: This is becoming very appealing. Like I wasn't so sold
- 8:56Speaker 4: on remote work, but now you're.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Like, all of this stuff is covered.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Also, I'm earning just over one hundred thousand dollars per year.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Does that put you in a very attractive savings position?
- 9:06Speaker 5: It does. I had never earned money like this before
- 9:09Speaker 5: falling into this role. So I have hit some pretty
- 9:12Speaker 5: incredible saving goals this year.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about them. What are your big money goals?
- 9:18Speaker 5: Ah, My biggest money goal this year is to buy property.
- 9:21Speaker 5: So I'm just going through the process at the moment
- 9:24Speaker 5: of preapproval.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Looking to purchase an investment property, hopefully in the next
- 9:30Speaker 5: month or two.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Oh that's so exciting. That so soon?
- 9:34Speaker 4: And so have you got your deposit together in all
- 9:36Speaker 4: of the balls in the right places.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Yes, I have my deposit ready. I have gone through
- 9:41Speaker 5: this process once before. But also living on the island,
- 9:44Speaker 5: it makes it very difficult to view properties. Of course,
- 9:47Speaker 5: it has slowed me down a little bit in my
- 9:49Speaker 5: search for properties, but I think I've reached the point
- 9:52Speaker 5: where I may just have to purchase without viewing the
- 9:54Speaker 5: property first.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Yeah, right, are you purchasing remotely or are you purchasing
- 9:58Speaker 4: back like we're your mummy, or like what's the plan
- 10:01Speaker 4: with location for this property purchase?
- 10:03Speaker 5: At the moment, I'm looking at Cans in Far North Queensland.
- 10:08Speaker 2: And is that because you want to live there at
- 10:10Speaker 2: some point or is this a good investment opportunity or
- 10:13Speaker 2: what does that look like for me?
- 10:14Speaker 5: I think it is a place where you can buy
- 10:18Speaker 5: a good investment opportunity. Also, if things were to fall
- 10:21Speaker 5: through with renting it out and I did have to
- 10:23Speaker 5: move there, I would have access to employment. Yeah, and
- 10:27Speaker 5: I have lived there previously, so it's a place that's
- 10:29Speaker 5: just familiar to me.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Great, Cans is gorgeous as well, so like I would
- 10:33Speaker 4: not be mad if I had to go and live there, Like,
- 10:35Speaker 4: oh no, I have to live in Far North Queensland.
- 10:38Speaker 2: How bad is that?
- 10:40Speaker 5: I know it's tropical paradise there minus the crocodiles.
- 10:43Speaker 4: It is so beautiful all right, So property purchase, what
- 10:46Speaker 4: are your other big money goals?
- 10:48Speaker 5: I don't have too many what I would call short
- 10:51Speaker 5: term money goals at the moment. I think once I
- 10:53Speaker 5: take off buying a property, then I'll start to look.
- 10:57Speaker 5: But yeah, for long term. You know, I'm not a
- 11:00Speaker 5: person who particularly wants to work a full time job
- 11:03Speaker 5: for the next thirty years forty years fair, So I
- 11:06Speaker 5: would really like to find myself in a position down
- 11:09Speaker 5: the track where I can work less.
- 11:12Speaker 1: You know.
- 11:12Speaker 5: If that looks like paying off property so that I
- 11:16Speaker 5: don't owe anything on it as quick as possible, you know,
- 11:19Speaker 5: those are probably my goals down the track.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I love that. What does not working full time look
- 11:23Speaker 2: like to you?
- 11:25Speaker 4: Is it just vibing out during the day, Like, how
- 11:28Speaker 4: many days a week are we talking that you would
- 11:30Speaker 4: actually work? Like, give me an idea of what this
- 11:33Speaker 4: goal lifestyle looks like.
- 11:34Speaker 5: So I think my perfect rosstar would be four days
- 11:39Speaker 5: a week or three days a week. You know, I
- 11:41Speaker 5: have a lot of things that I would like to
- 11:43Speaker 5: do on the side, and maybe that could also include
- 11:48Speaker 5: my own business as well.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Fun.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know what my own business would be,
- 11:54Speaker 5: but I would really like to be able to support
- 11:56Speaker 5: myself and work for myself. I think that's probably my
- 11:58Speaker 5: ultimate goal.
- 12:00Speaker 4: I love it. It is a lot of stress, but
- 12:01Speaker 4: it is definitely worth it. All right, let's go to
- 12:04Speaker 4: a really quick break, because on the flip side, I
- 12:06Speaker 4: want to ask you.
- 12:07Speaker 2: I guess about.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Investments, about debt and your best and worst money habits.
- 12:10Speaker 4: So guys, don't go anywhere, all right, money dirist. We
- 12:17Speaker 4: are back and you are living an island life in
- 12:20Speaker 4: a very remote part of Australia, which now you're telling
- 12:23Speaker 4: me about it, I'm kind of envious of.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Like I just look at it and go.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, what on earth this is so far
- 12:30Speaker 4: from what my reality is.
- 12:32Speaker 2: What do your days off look like? If you're stuck
- 12:34Speaker 2: on a very remote island, what do you get up to?
- 12:37Speaker 5: Well, the only thing you can do on an island
- 12:39Speaker 5: is go on a boat.
- 12:40Speaker 2: That's okay. You like boats, I've heard.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I do like boats, even on my days off. I
- 12:44Speaker 5: drive them. So we will go around the islands, go bakeboarding,
- 12:50Speaker 5: to slay on the beach, go through a bit of
- 12:52Speaker 5: a snorkel, try and get away from the crocodiles is
- 12:55Speaker 5: my ultimate goal.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, thank you.
- 12:58Speaker 5: But to be fair, I actually don't have a whole
- 13:00Speaker 5: lot of spare time because I do work two jobs.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Two jobs.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Yes, I do work a second job, so I often
- 13:06Speaker 5: use my days off and also my annually to fit
- 13:09Speaker 5: my second job in.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Tell me more what is this second job?
- 13:12Speaker 4: You didn't mention that when I said what do you
- 13:14Speaker 4: do for work and how much money do you earn?
- 13:16Speaker 5: I work for a not for profit in the environmental sector.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, how did you forget that?
- 13:23Speaker 5: It is just a casual job and the hours are
- 13:25Speaker 5: very varying. Some weeks I may not work at all
- 13:28Speaker 5: and then others will do thirty hours a week. So
- 13:31Speaker 5: that job looks like a lot of computer time as well.
- 13:35Speaker 5: But I also do get to go out into the
- 13:37Speaker 5: field quite often and work with traditional owners and rangers
- 13:41Speaker 5: on country.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, gorgeous.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Yeah, so I work on different islands and back on
- 13:46Speaker 5: the mainland doing that as well.
- 13:48Speaker 4: So what kind of income are you earning from that
- 13:50Speaker 4: in addition to your one hundred grand in your job
- 13:53Speaker 4: in marine pilotage.
- 13:55Speaker 5: So that is a casual job, so I'm paid on
- 13:57Speaker 5: an hourly basis. As I mentioned, it's very sporadic the
- 14:00Speaker 5: hours last tax yere. I think I earn an extra
- 14:05Speaker 5: twelve grand with that, and I'm probably earn about the
- 14:08Speaker 5: same this year.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that honestly is so cool.
- 14:11Speaker 4: And the fact that you get to, I guess, connect
- 14:13Speaker 4: so much with the land I'm assuming you're learning a
- 14:16Speaker 4: lot as you, you know, do the work that you do.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I feel like that's a dream that is very very cool.
- 14:22Speaker 4: So tell me now about investment. Do you have any investments?
- 14:25Speaker 4: If so, what are they? If you don't, do you
- 14:27Speaker 4: have a plan.
- 14:28Speaker 5: So I've been doing a little bit of listening to
- 14:30Speaker 5: Shoes on the Money.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, great idea. Can't recommend it more highly.
- 14:35Speaker 5: I also have a Raise account, which I've had for
- 14:37Speaker 5: about three years. Yeah, and with downloading and joining up
- 14:43Speaker 5: with Chasi's, I now have started a plan to let
- 14:48Speaker 5: my raise get up to five hundred dollars, and once
- 14:51Speaker 5: it reaches five hundred dollars, I'm withdrawing that and putting
- 14:53Speaker 5: into my Chazia's account.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Oh.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I love this idea.
- 14:56Speaker 4: And I don't mean to buddy in and tell you
- 14:58Speaker 4: how to suck eggs. That's not what I'm But did
- 15:00Speaker 4: you know that Chaz's has just introduced roundups, so you
- 15:04Speaker 4: could like do that inside Chazi's and not change from
- 15:07Speaker 4: one investment platform, sell down an asset that might decrease
- 15:10Speaker 4: in value, and then transfer it to another one.
- 15:13Speaker 5: I did not know that, and this is why I listened.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Well, there you go. Hot tips. Love the strategy.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Obviously, if we're exposing our money to the share market
- 15:22Speaker 4: for a short period of time, there could be some volatility,
- 15:24Speaker 4: and so that might be another way to protect yourself.
- 15:27Speaker 4: But I'll let you look into that and make.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Your own decision. It's just a little idea, my friend.
- 15:31Speaker 5: That's perfect take out the middleman.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Yeah, but I mean it's a genius idea though, Like,
- 15:36Speaker 4: have you found that having roundups has meant that there's
- 15:39Speaker 4: just like money there that you're like, wow, I really
- 15:40Speaker 4: didn't feel like that came out, or wow, that hit
- 15:43Speaker 4: five hundred dollars way quicker than I thought it might.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't notice the money going out of my
- 15:48Speaker 5: account at all. I've had it for so long that
- 15:49Speaker 5: it's just been a part of my account and budgeting
- 15:52Speaker 5: all the time. I really enjoy the roundup.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I do too.
- 15:56Speaker 4: It's what I do because I like to think of
- 15:58Speaker 4: myself as a relatively lazy investment. Like I've just like
- 16:01Speaker 4: direct debited everything else, so that happens, and then I've
- 16:03Speaker 4: got my roundups, and sometimes I log in, I'm like, oh,
- 16:06Speaker 4: look at me, that's so nice, Like I did all
- 16:08Speaker 4: this work, but I didn't. That's my favorite. I want
- 16:12Speaker 4: to know next, do you have any debts? If so,
- 16:14Speaker 4: what are they? If not, can I know a little
- 16:17Speaker 4: bit more pervy detail about the debt that you might
- 16:19Speaker 4: take on for this property purchase You're about.
- 16:21Speaker 5: To make sure? Well, the only debt I have is
- 16:24Speaker 5: my hextet. I am feeling quite disheartened at the moment
- 16:30Speaker 5: about how large my hextet is. It's up to about
- 16:32Speaker 5: fifty five thousand dollars.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Yeah, fair, I would feel stressed, But at the same
- 16:37Speaker 4: time it makes sense.
- 16:39Speaker 5: I think going through university and even high school, hextet
- 16:44Speaker 5: was always kind of sold to me as an interest
- 16:46Speaker 5: free loan, which in the last year particularly, is certainly not.
- 16:50Speaker 5: I think my hex stet was raised by about four
- 16:53Speaker 5: thousand dollars last financial year. That is my only debt.
- 16:57Speaker 5: I do also have a credit card, but I pretty
- 17:00Speaker 5: much just use it for points on larger purchases and
- 17:03Speaker 5: then pay it off immediately. With the property that I'm
- 17:07Speaker 5: looking to buy, Cans is still quite reasonably priced, so
- 17:11Speaker 5: I'm looking at apartments in about two hundred thousand dollars range. Yeah, cool,
- 17:17Speaker 5: of which I have quite a large deposit to put
- 17:20Speaker 5: towards whether I use all of my money as a
- 17:23Speaker 5: deposit or not. That has a rental return on it
- 17:26Speaker 5: of about between three hundred and three hundred and fifty
- 17:29Speaker 5: dollars a week.
- 17:30Speaker 2: That's pretty good.
- 17:31Speaker 4: And when you look at that and go all right, well,
- 17:34Speaker 4: you know it's a two hundred thousand dollars apartment, I
- 17:36Speaker 4: can get good rental yield. Would you look at putting
- 17:40Speaker 4: less of a deposit down and potentially putting money into
- 17:42Speaker 4: like an offset account? Is that something that you've spoken
- 17:44Speaker 4: to your broker about. I guess structuring to make sure
- 17:47Speaker 4: it works really well for you.
- 17:49Speaker 5: Yeah, that is something that I have spoken to my
- 17:51Speaker 5: broker about, and I will be putting it in an
- 17:54Speaker 5: offset account.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Love, we're all on the same page. I love that.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Tell me, now, what do you think your best money
- 18:00Speaker 2: habit is?
- 18:02Speaker 5: I think I am a really good saver.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I know you're a really good saver.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Yeah, which I will also discuss seeing my worst money habits.
- 18:11Speaker 5: But yeah, I think I'm a really good saver. I
- 18:14Speaker 5: was thinking about this. I also purchase a lot of
- 18:16Speaker 5: my clothes, furniture, you know, most things secondhand. My main
- 18:22Speaker 5: priority behind doing that is probably because it's the most
- 18:25Speaker 5: sustainable option, but it's also led me to like be
- 18:28Speaker 5: able to save a lot more money by doing that.
- 18:30Speaker 2: How does that work if you're remote?
- 18:32Speaker 4: Like, is it still easy to I guess, get access
- 18:35Speaker 4: to that market? You could say, like, I feel like
- 18:39Speaker 4: you would have less options.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Yeah. So living up here, everything in my house is
- 18:44Speaker 5: actually provided by work, so I don't need to go
- 18:46Speaker 5: out and buy furniture plates, that kind of stuff. When
- 18:50Speaker 5: it comes to clothes, I am a big sucker for Deepop.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Oh.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I love Deepop same.
- 18:55Speaker 5: I love to be able to support people as well
- 18:58Speaker 5: and selling the clothes that they no longer use rather
- 19:00Speaker 5: than bigger companies.
- 19:02Speaker 2: It's genius. I love it.
- 19:03Speaker 4: I feel like I checked Deepop before I make any
- 19:05Speaker 4: purchase nowadays as well, because I'm like.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Oh that's cute. Someone might have put it on Deepop
- 19:09Speaker 2: and half the time they.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Have exactly yeah. And that's quite easy. To get things
- 19:13Speaker 5: sent up in the mail. It does take about three
- 19:15Speaker 5: weeks to arrive. There's no instant gratification.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Oh I would suck up there.
- 19:20Speaker 4: I would forget that I'd ordered things and then they'd
- 19:22Speaker 4: turn up and be like oh yeah, yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 5: I do end up at the post office quite a
- 19:25Speaker 5: lot off.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Here, and segueing from that, what do you think your
- 19:29Speaker 4: worst money habit is?
- 19:31Speaker 1: So?
- 19:31Speaker 5: Yeah, As I mentioned, I think I quite a good saver.
- 19:34Speaker 5: I think my attitude towards money has shifted quite a
- 19:38Speaker 5: lot lately, So I think my worst money habits are
- 19:42Speaker 5: based on decisions that I had made previously. I'm feeling
- 19:45Speaker 5: quite annoyed that I haven't prioritized investment earlier on in
- 19:49Speaker 5: my life, whether that investment looked like contributing extra to
- 19:53Speaker 5: my super or buying a property sooner, or also making
- 19:58Speaker 5: voluntary payments on my I feel annoyed because I did
- 20:02Speaker 5: have the ability to do that sooner and I haven't.
- 20:04Speaker 4: But you didn't have the tools and resources and knowledge
- 20:07Speaker 4: that you did. Now, you can't be too harsh on yourself.
- 20:09Speaker 4: I feel like so many times we look back and go, oh,
- 20:11Speaker 4: my god, I would be so good if I X
- 20:13Speaker 4: Y Z.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Well, you know what, I'd be so good if I
- 20:15Speaker 2: started investing the day I was born. But I didn't, did.
- 20:18Speaker 5: I You're right, it is a terrible game to play,
- 20:21Speaker 5: the hindsight game. I think. Also one of my worst
- 20:24Speaker 5: money habits is I have always been a good saver,
- 20:28Speaker 5: as I mentioned, but typically before I moved up here,
- 20:31Speaker 5: that savings was always put towards travel. Yeah, so I would,
- 20:35Speaker 5: you know, get enough in my bank account to go traveling,
- 20:38Speaker 5: go traveling, deplete it and then come back and start
- 20:40Speaker 5: from scratch. Yeah okay, And so that is what I'm
- 20:44Speaker 5: trying to resist the urge to do these days. I'm
- 20:46Speaker 5: a little bit more grown up now, So if I
- 20:47Speaker 5: can just resist that urge to not quit my job
- 20:50Speaker 5: and go on a trip around the world, that would
- 20:52Speaker 5: be great.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I mean, it sounds pretty cool, Like I think you
- 20:55Speaker 4: could convince me. I think we could all do those things.
- 20:58Speaker 4: But if that's your worst money, have it. Like you're
- 21:00Speaker 4: a very interesting person, Like that is very very cool.
- 21:04Speaker 2: We've talked a lot.
- 21:05Speaker 4: I feel like you are absolutely killing it and also
- 21:08Speaker 4: living your best life at the same time, Like marine
- 21:11Speaker 4: pilotage sounds slay, Like.
- 21:13Speaker 2: That sounds so cool.
- 21:14Speaker 4: But then also getting to work in an NFP in
- 21:18Speaker 4: the environmental sector like that would nourish you. Like I
- 21:21Speaker 4: am assuming you're not doing it for the money, because
- 21:23Speaker 4: you obviously earn a lot in your bigger role, but
- 21:26Speaker 4: it just sounds like that is so cool, And you
- 21:29Speaker 4: live on an island, and yes, groceries are expensive, but
- 21:32Speaker 4: everything else kind of is subsidized, so maybe it works
- 21:35Speaker 4: out a bit. But now that we've talked, what do
- 21:39Speaker 4: you think it would take to get you from a
- 21:41Speaker 4: B plus to an A or an A plus.
- 21:43Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely just needs to prioritize the investing. So if
- 21:47Speaker 5: I can achieve my money goal of buying a property
- 21:49Speaker 5: this year, and once that's accomplished, move on to the
- 21:53Speaker 5: next thing, whether that's property or a different investment, that's
- 21:58Speaker 5: definitely what I would need to take me to.
- 22:00Speaker 2: That is so cool.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I love that because we know what's going to happen,
- 22:04Speaker 4: Like you are getting into property, and you will be
- 22:07Speaker 4: able to leverage that one into the next one. Even
- 22:10Speaker 4: just knowing that you've got a bigger deposit than you
- 22:12Speaker 4: need for your first property is going to be so constructive.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Like I am obsessed and I can't wait to see
- 22:17Speaker 4: where you go money, Darist. Unfortunately, that is all we
- 22:20Speaker 4: have time for today. But I have loved getting to
- 22:22Speaker 4: know you, getting to know a bit about your story.
- 22:25Speaker 2: It makes me want to go live on an island.
- 22:27Speaker 4: I'm not sure my husband or my impending baby is
- 22:30Speaker 4: going to like that idea. But like, I'll pitch it
- 22:33Speaker 4: to them and see what they say. But thank you
- 22:36Speaker 4: so much. I think our community is going to love
- 22:38Speaker 4: this story because it's just so different and so pervy.
- 22:41Speaker 2: So thank you.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Yeah, no worries, thank you so much for having me.
