- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Today, I'll talk about that John wants his friends to
- 0:09Speaker 2: be honest even if it hurts, and gets hungry hearing
- 0:11Speaker 2: about a tornado in England. Meanwhile, I learn exactly how
- 0:15Speaker 2: many roller coasters it takes to make me nauseous and
- 0:18Speaker 2: make a joke at a general Baptist convention. Well, it's
- 0:22Speaker 2: a conversation about whether compromise is always a bad thing.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Today's episode is not sponsored by message in a bottle.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's the least reliable way to mail something and also littering.
- 0:32Speaker 2: But first, a word from our actual sponsor.
- 0:42Speaker 1: What's up out there? I'm John, This is Johnny us.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Talk about that your favorite podcast? We hope that, if
- 0:48Speaker 1: not a maybe top five? Were talking?
- 0:53Speaker 2: We wait, we chart.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I wonder how many podcasts most people who listen to
- 0:58Speaker 1: us listen to?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, because you really say, like they're my favorite? And
- 1:03Speaker 2: what else do you listen to?
- 1:03Speaker 3: Do?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Nothing?
- 1:04Speaker 2: I don't, Yeah, the only.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Like my wife listens to a lot of podcasts, okay,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and we're still her favorite. She says, she would tell
- 1:11Speaker 1: me like she's not no, she would tell me honest
- 1:15Speaker 1: things all the time. I don't want to say any
- 1:17Speaker 1: more than that I trust her. I trust her. I need.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Here's the thing.
- 1:24Speaker 1: When you're an Inneagram six, you don't want people telling
- 1:26Speaker 1: you things that aren't true. Yeah, like you want people
- 1:30Speaker 1: if it hurts, you'd rather it hurt.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah. I guess maybe I'm not a six then, because
- 1:36Speaker 2: I do feel like I because there was a video
- 1:37Speaker 2: I saw about that about like you if if people
- 1:42Speaker 2: are super careful with criticism around you, you have trained
- 1:45Speaker 2: them to be that way because you've shown that you
- 1:47Speaker 2: can't take real criticism. Yeah, and so you're training people
- 1:51Speaker 2: how to behave around you.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Well, I know it's today. I was talking through something
- 1:56Speaker 1: with my best friend and I said, I just don't
- 1:59Speaker 1: want my friends to lose her respect for me, and
- 2:01Speaker 1: you just stayed silent. I was like, Okay, well that's
- 2:09Speaker 1: where we are, I guess.
- 2:10Speaker 2: And then I was like, and go, let's start the
- 2:12Speaker 2: show and let's talk about it. No, John, I could
- 2:15Speaker 2: never lose respect for you.
- 2:17Speaker 1: That is not true.
- 2:18Speaker 2: You tell me, what would I tell you?
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm losing respect for you because of your decisions or whatever.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Good Lord, this is all I think you should do better.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I tell my wife that dads like. My fear is
- 2:29Speaker 1: that my friends do think my friends think probably that
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'm so much harder on myself than they could ever be,
- 2:36Speaker 1: that I'm afraid they won't be hard on me when
- 2:37Speaker 1: they need to be.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I think I'm pretty hard on you.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you're pretty honest.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It's a little bit I got on you today because
- 2:48Speaker 2: you relate for lunch.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I already ate it. Listen, not lunch. I ate the mistake.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I literally I was at a volleyball private.
- 3:02Speaker 2: You set these times, you go, hey, Johnny noon, I go, sure, go, yeah,
- 3:06Speaker 2: I can make it there by noon. I go, okay,
- 3:08Speaker 2: this was two nights ago. Like, all right, so today
- 3:10Speaker 2: I text you before I leave my house. Are we
- 3:12Speaker 2: still on for noon? No response, Hey, I'm not leaving
- 3:15Speaker 2: my Finally I go, I'm not leaving my house until
- 3:17Speaker 2: I know that you're going to be there at noon
- 3:18Speaker 2: and tell me where we're going. Then finally you go, uh,
- 3:22Speaker 2: twenty fifteen work, let's go. And so I was like, okay,
- 3:25Speaker 2: So I leave my house and then I'm halfway there,
- 3:28Speaker 2: twenty minute drive. I'm ten minutes into the drive, and
- 3:31Speaker 2: you go, dude, I'm an idiot. I thought it was eleven.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I did. I thought I was I thought it was
- 3:35Speaker 1: a different time.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So how do you think that you're in a did
- 3:38Speaker 2: you switch time zones? How could you think that.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I was talking to a coach and a private lesson
- 3:46Speaker 1: for my daughter about a bunch of stuff.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Sounds very privileged. I was shooting, so that's just private
- 3:50Speaker 2: lesson for my daughter. Next thing, I know, my gee
- 3:55Speaker 2: ten dollars Swiss watch has given me a wrong time.
- 3:59Speaker 1: No, I'm like, I'm shooting videos and out trying to
- 4:02Speaker 1: you know, I'm talking recruiting. I'm paying for stuff with
- 4:06Speaker 1: my phone because to pay for the lesson again privilege.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I just see you thought, Johnny, I'll understand what I
- 4:14Speaker 2: guess I'm saying, is I get.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I didn't think you'd understand. I thought Johnny's gonna never
- 4:20Speaker 1: let me leave this down because I tell my daughter,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I said to Sadie, I'm one time everywhere unless Uncle
- 4:26Speaker 1: Johnny's involved. And something seems to go wrong every time,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and that's on me. I don't know what it is.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I think because you save the worst parts for your
- 4:33Speaker 1: best friends.
- 4:34Speaker 2: That something I'm saying, could you not could you please
- 4:38Speaker 2: mask for me? Could you hide that part of yourself?
- 4:41Speaker 1: I don't mean to, it's want to want the good John,
- 4:44Speaker 1: today was one hundred and it was.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Only only fifteen minutes later or so, I mean from
- 4:48Speaker 2: the original time. You were thirty minutes later.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Well, you'd already agreed to the new time I had.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Are you still like emotionally holding to the old time.
- 4:55Speaker 2: As if you were just saying you set the time.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And then I was fifteen minutes late. I think what
- 5:00Speaker 1: we should do is every minute late is a dollar.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I paid towards your meal. Okay, today you'd have got
- 5:06Speaker 1: fifteen dollars.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I got the cheapy too. They let me get the
- 5:08Speaker 2: kids meal. It at Cheddars, Yeah, which it says twelve.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It says twelve, and it's a quarter pounds burger, yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 2: with fries for like six and a half bucks. I
- 5:19Speaker 2: was trying to eat. It's the best value at Cheddars.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Not a sponsor.
- 5:22Speaker 1: No, I went and ordered the loaded broccoli. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 1: of course, of course. The guy said, nobody knows what
- 5:28Speaker 1: loaded BROCOLI no, no.
- 5:29Speaker 2: No, no, no, no no, no, you explain, you explained it.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I didn't call it loaded broccoli.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Now you said loaded up, like.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Like a baked potato. He's like, oh, yeah, of course,
- 5:37Speaker 1: of course. And I was like so that means broccoli
- 5:40Speaker 1: with butter, sour cream, bacon, and cheese.
- 5:43Speaker 2: He brought you plain broccoli and a loaded potato which
- 5:47Speaker 2: you then took your broccoli and dipped in and then
- 5:49Speaker 2: ate the potato too. Now trying to do trying to
- 5:51Speaker 2: do low car.
- 5:52Speaker 1: This is the straight devil right here. You know what
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like, I didn't order this. I ordered I intentionally.
- 5:58Speaker 2: You think the waiter was the devil.
- 6:00Speaker 1: No, I think that. I think the devil used the waiter.
- 6:06Speaker 1: He was just an innocent.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I think it's fine. You're just fine.
- 6:12Speaker 2: But the volleyball went okay though, it's okay.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, she did a really good, really good deal.
- 6:16Speaker 2: That's good. She got the best parts of you, and
- 6:18Speaker 2: that's good that you should give that to your daughter.
- 6:20Speaker 1: That is true. If I had to choose when you and.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Her, Uh huh, you've already you've made your joys.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, it's not even that's fine, that's one
- 6:27Speaker 1: of my.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Uh maybe if I was better at volleyball, that would help. Yeah. Yeah,
- 6:33Speaker 2: I have a terrible vertical in the shorts. Even before
- 6:36Speaker 2: the scooter accident, I have a terrible vertical.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, but you're tall.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's true.
- 6:42Speaker 1: He used to play basketball a lot too, on two
- 6:44Speaker 1: and me and you'd be on a team and you
- 6:46Speaker 1: don't how tall are you? Six four?
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah? That six four?
- 6:49Speaker 1: You don't play like a six four guy. You play
- 6:51Speaker 1: like you play a finesse fadeaway game unless you're playing
- 6:56Speaker 1: one on one with me and then and then you
- 6:57Speaker 1: just like you, which why can't just do that? We're
- 7:01Speaker 1: playing two one too.
- 7:01Speaker 2: It's boring, really, yeah, it's boring.
- 7:04Speaker 1: We could have won so many championships.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I don't know, championship.
- 7:07Speaker 1: We did win one championship, didn't we Yeah, I remember that.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It was five and five.
- 7:10Speaker 2: It was five on five. Yeah, that was not our
- 7:13Speaker 2: finest hour of the Church League. It was carpet or something.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Probably did one of us have.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Significant free throws in the game at the end that
- 7:23Speaker 1: we had to hit to win.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I can't remember, but that sounds about right.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, like the whole game comes down to this. Yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and for once we didn't choke. I don't remember who.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It was like a Disney movie.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, our wives are watching. Maybe was that our finest hour?
- 7:38Speaker 2: I don't think so. I don't think our wives were watching.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I think that was our best moment.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I've had pretty good moments since then. I'll just be real.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Joy pulls out his picture from the Grand Ole Operay, which,
- 7:49Speaker 1: by the way, I have that picture.
- 7:51Speaker 2: You still you have to hang it up and it
- 7:52Speaker 2: hurts my feelings a little bit.
- 7:53Speaker 4: You know.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I paid like fifty five bucks for that. Why, that's what.
- 7:56Speaker 2: That's what those places that do these they take your
- 7:58Speaker 2: digital photos and they put them in a frame, and
- 8:00Speaker 2: it's the thing. That's what they cost to get one
- 8:02Speaker 2: that big.
- 8:04Speaker 1: But the frame where you get a frame with that
- 8:05Speaker 1: from Dollar Tree and you can get the photo printed
- 8:08Speaker 1: at Walgreens. No, you paid fifty five dollars for that.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Why do you think that it's less important to me?
- 8:18Speaker 2: I even tried. I even tried to put it in
- 8:19Speaker 2: AI and take the shine off your head a little bit,
- 8:21Speaker 2: which a lot of the shine is gone. It's a
- 8:23Speaker 2: small shine still because you're right under a light. Yeah,
- 8:26Speaker 2: but there's a little shine there.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I haven't shine stuff on there too.
- 8:28Speaker 2: That night, did you really off?
- 8:34Speaker 4: No?
- 8:34Speaker 1: Listen, I put it there because it's directly in my eyeshot,
- 8:39Speaker 1: Like that's where I that's It's like, if.
- 8:41Speaker 2: You're really proud of it. I think you'd want it
- 8:42Speaker 2: on camera, and h it's my feelings a little bit.
- 8:45Speaker 1: You want to put one picture on this whole wall.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I mean I want you to put a bunch of
- 8:49Speaker 2: pictures out. I'm going I'd be one of them.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I own all the frames, a bunch of the frames.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Do you know how many photos I have in my
- 8:56Speaker 2: house I haven't put up on my wall. Dozens? Yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 2: you know when it's going to happen. When I get
- 9:01Speaker 2: some free time. That's where I am when I prioritize it.
- 9:07Speaker 2: What time do you think it is? Right now?
- 9:10Speaker 1: What is this?
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:13Speaker 1: I didn't have a few times last few weeks where
- 9:15Speaker 1: I was like, wait is today Saturday?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Like I totally it felt like one of those weeks
- 9:19Speaker 2: for me too.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I know you've got a lot going on, but I
- 9:23Speaker 1: am in a book project. I mean, you're always in
- 9:28Speaker 1: a book project though I like two, but that's your life.
- 9:31Speaker 1: And I wrote for a grant in the middle of
- 9:33Speaker 1: this general grant. I wrote for general grant this was
- 9:39Speaker 1: we had to break some the is there.
- 9:41Speaker 2: A general grant you can go for?
- 9:43Speaker 4: Like?
- 9:43Speaker 2: This is a general It's like I did this one
- 9:47Speaker 2: event for a church. You know these denominations come out
- 9:50Speaker 2: of the blue. You get off of the other words
- 9:52Speaker 2: the such and such, or we're open Bible. Yeah, I
- 9:54Speaker 2: didn't want it was open Bible was the name of
- 9:56Speaker 2: the dominant. I don't even know what that is. Yeah
- 9:58Speaker 2: I do.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I remember this.
- 9:59Speaker 2: You were like, I don't know sure, and then I
- 10:01Speaker 2: go do it and I go, I think we maybe open.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I try to look at their beliefs. I was like,
- 10:04Speaker 2: I think we may be open Bible, and.
- 10:07Speaker 1: They're way different than the closed Bible.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I mean closed Bible. Don't want to hang around those.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I don't care what the money pays.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just a shelf to these people. It's like
- 10:17Speaker 2: a coaster. But uh, I did one. It was called
- 10:21Speaker 2: General Baptist, the General Baptists Convention, and I was like, so,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you guys don't believe anything specific, you just say. They
- 10:31Speaker 2: didn't like it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I didn't like it.
- 10:34Speaker 2: They did not like that at all.
- 10:35Speaker 1: If you say the word general, yeah, in Dane Allen's
- 10:38Speaker 1: Presence and Staff meeting.
- 10:39Speaker 2: H huh, he'll salute you, okay.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Or if you say any or major major, A major's
- 10:45Speaker 1: the only ones that come up. Or I guess if
- 10:47Speaker 1: you said private to private meeting. He'd be the colonel
- 10:50Speaker 1: of an idea private meeting. Yeah, he does it ever,
- 10:53Speaker 1: I mean, he never misses it. It's pretty impressive. And
- 10:56Speaker 1: if all the things we taught Dane.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I saw Dane, our friend Dame was made in a
- 10:59Speaker 2: fish member of Disciple, Yeah, which is good. He's been
- 11:02Speaker 2: he's been playing with them and touring with them for
- 11:05Speaker 2: ten years or so. Yeah, but he's officially their bass
- 11:08Speaker 2: player now and background vocalist.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I thought it was really cool hearing the whole he
- 11:11Speaker 1: did his background story of music, which we were present.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Out of that.
- 11:16Speaker 2: We were a little piece of it.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Yeah, him talking about five Swing Stones, Oh yeah, which
- 11:20Speaker 1: was the name of our first band.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Uh huh. He said that was the name of his
- 11:23Speaker 2: first band.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So they made have the name of their first band,
- 11:25Speaker 1: just like it was ours. They were paying some serious
- 11:28Speaker 1: homage to us back then.
- 11:29Speaker 2: We're paying some dues, is what they were paying, and
- 11:31Speaker 2: we all nobody was paying them to play.
- 11:34Speaker 1: That's right, just like us. You'll notice that he, just
- 11:36Speaker 1: like us, regretted the name immediately.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Huh. But that all happened.
- 11:40Speaker 1: How did the name we regret get passed down to
- 11:43Speaker 1: someone else who could also regret it.
- 11:45Speaker 2: We regret, we regret Reggy. Yeah was well. Anyway, congrats
- 11:52Speaker 2: to Dane. I think I'm doing a festival with them
- 11:55Speaker 2: in September. No uprise, uprise sounds more violent. Yeah, you
- 12:02Speaker 2: don't want to, but yeah, we're we're doing that together.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I think Reggie Dabs is gonna be with that one.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Oh that's in September, so take It's available at JHNNYW
- 12:11Speaker 2: dot com. It's in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, shoving upstate PA.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I have shipped books to Shippensburg.
- 12:19Speaker 2: That's what they're known for.
- 12:20Speaker 1: That'd be a fun thing to go to. You know,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Gang is going to be there.
- 12:24Speaker 2: You know what else a fun thing to go to
- 12:26Speaker 2: would be John.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 12:28Speaker 2: A fine word or two from a few of our
- 12:31Speaker 2: sponsors who help us keep the lights off. Let talk
- 12:33Speaker 2: about that.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Let's hear from them.
- 12:45Speaker 2: What a pro And we're back. So this weekend was
- 12:49Speaker 2: a big test for my foot, you know, because I'm
- 12:50Speaker 2: still working on old sprained foot from the old scooter mishap,
- 12:54Speaker 2: and I'm a little gampy still but hobbling around. And
- 12:58Speaker 2: I did five arena shows Nate Bergazzi and so it's
- 13:03Speaker 2: just like you can't get where. What's funny is the
- 13:05Speaker 2: best way to get where I was going would have
- 13:07Speaker 2: been one of his scooters, and I'm not gonna get
- 13:09Speaker 2: on one until I totally I made my mind. I'm
- 13:11Speaker 2: gonna get back on it. Counterphobic. You gotta gotta tackle
- 13:15Speaker 2: get back on the horse. But I'm gonna wait till
- 13:19Speaker 2: because you don't want to be that guy. That's like
- 13:20Speaker 2: he got back on and he fell off again, and
- 13:23Speaker 2: then now the nose is completely shattered.
- 13:26Speaker 1: It would be hard to live it down. It wouldn't
- 13:27Speaker 1: a second time. Yeah, the second time.
- 13:29Speaker 2: It's like if you get a speeding ticket on vacation,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you go slow the rest because you can't get two
- 13:33Speaker 2: tickets in a row. You don't want to be that guy,
- 13:36Speaker 2: so you just drop your legal man for the next
- 13:38Speaker 2: month because you can't get two tickets in the same
- 13:40Speaker 2: calendar month, because then you've got a problem. Anyway, they
- 13:45Speaker 2: were so fun. But one of the things we did
- 13:47Speaker 2: and I did sometimes I don't tell stuff about Nate's world,
- 13:51Speaker 2: but he had an article come out about this while
- 13:54Speaker 2: we were on tour, so I think it's a pretty
- 13:55Speaker 2: fair game. But Nate is starting a theme park. He's yeah,
- 13:59Speaker 2: he is. I've been talking about it for a long
- 14:01Speaker 2: time papers and stuff, and now it's in Wall Street
- 14:03Speaker 2: Journal did an article about this man wants to become
- 14:05Speaker 2: the next Walt Disney. He may just pull it off.
- 14:07Speaker 2: That was the title of the article. Wow. And so
- 14:09Speaker 2: it was all about his his dream. And so the
- 14:13Speaker 2: third day of the tour, we were in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
- 14:17Speaker 2: We were driving from Albany, and they go, Hey, just
- 14:19Speaker 2: you know in the morning, we're going to get up
- 14:22Speaker 2: at nine, because sometimes we just sleep in a little
- 14:25Speaker 2: bit and get up whenever and go get coffee and whatever,
- 14:27Speaker 2: and you just wander into the arena, go find your
- 14:29Speaker 2: dressing room, and you have a really long day of
- 14:30Speaker 2: waiting to do my dumb eight minutes and Nate's show.
- 14:34Speaker 2: But that day they were like, hey, we're going to
- 14:36Speaker 2: get up at nine. If this van is going to
- 14:37Speaker 2: pick us up, well, we're right next door. The arena
- 14:39Speaker 2: he was doing is right next to Hershey Park, which
- 14:42Speaker 2: is a theme park. I had no idea it was
- 14:44Speaker 2: a thing. I'd heard about it, like, Oh, there's all
- 14:46Speaker 2: Hershey Museum and that's where I make the chocolate. And
- 14:48Speaker 2: I was like, oh, they probably have a dumb like
- 14:50Speaker 2: roller coaster or two. No, it's like a huge, like
- 14:53Speaker 2: Dollywood sized park. Wow, it's one hundred and twenty four
- 14:56Speaker 2: acre theme park with gigantic coasters and other cool rides.
- 15:00Speaker 2: So Nate is like scouting and some of the guys
- 15:03Speaker 2: who were helping with his park evidently helped with that park,
- 15:06Speaker 2: the ride designers and builders, and so they were like,
- 15:09Speaker 2: come see these rides and see So he's really like shopping. Wow,
- 15:13Speaker 2: which is so funny to think about. But so we
- 15:16Speaker 2: got up at now he goes everybody that rides, you know,
- 15:20Speaker 2: you know, we want your feedback, so we'll all get
- 15:22Speaker 2: in this van. So before people were let into the park,
- 15:24Speaker 2: we're taking a van to one ride. Then the next
- 15:27Speaker 2: ride we did six. Well that's fine, and it's actually
- 15:30Speaker 2: pretty cool because you're just on these roads that the
- 15:32Speaker 2: people are just normally just walking on. You're just But
- 15:34Speaker 2: here's what happens. If you're fifty one, like I am.
- 15:37Speaker 2: The first one, You're like, well that was fun. I'm
- 15:40Speaker 2: a little disoriented, but whoa coast. I like roller coasters.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I like them a lot, not spinning roller coasters.
- 15:46Speaker 2: The ones I don't like are the VR that messes
- 15:48Speaker 2: with my equilibrium. But I'm like, I like roller coasters
- 15:51Speaker 2: and so then but normally you walk around for ten
- 15:55Speaker 2: minutes to get to the next one, you wait in
- 15:56Speaker 2: line for thirty minutes. We got in a van and
- 15:59Speaker 2: we were there, so now it's like number two, number two.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I was like, about it go different, it's different. The
- 16:05Speaker 2: third one was one of those like hammer style rides
- 16:07Speaker 2: where it swings back and he goes ho hey, like
- 16:11Speaker 2: the old ship thing. And I got off of that
- 16:15Speaker 2: one and I wanted to throw up. I felt like
- 16:20Speaker 2: I could have thrown up. If I had just coughed hard,
- 16:22Speaker 2: I could have thrown up in front of everybody. And
- 16:25Speaker 2: then I was like, oh boy. And then he goes
- 16:26Speaker 2: come on, and then we all got in the van
- 16:28Speaker 2: again and we're going to this next roller coaster, and
- 16:30Speaker 2: it was a It was a one that Nate was
- 16:32Speaker 2: the most excited about because it's the most It's designed
- 16:34Speaker 2: by the guy who did the Wabash cannon ball. It's
- 16:38Speaker 2: exactly like the Wabash cannonballs. It's got all these corkscrew
- 16:43Speaker 2: dipsy do turns. And that's where Nate worked, was his
- 16:45Speaker 2: first job, and so he's very, very nostalgica, but that's
- 16:48Speaker 2: why he wants to do the park.
- 16:50Speaker 1: And it's Nashville.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Yes, So we get off, we get on this ride
- 16:54Speaker 2: and it's a wooden roller coaster, wooden and iron.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Which is just herckey jerky all over the place.
- 17:00Speaker 2: And Buddy, we did all these sudden corkscrewed dipsy doos,
- 17:05Speaker 2: and I mean I had to go find a spot
- 17:09Speaker 2: to just be. If I could have found a private
- 17:11Speaker 2: place to throw up after that one, I would have
- 17:13Speaker 2: done it. I would have felt better. And then so
- 17:16Speaker 2: I called it. I called it. The next two I
- 17:18Speaker 2: did not ride. I just said, I'm gonna, oh, go
- 17:21Speaker 2: away from that. There was a lot of guys in
- 17:22Speaker 2: Nate's crew that did not ride, by the way, like
- 17:24Speaker 2: big dudes, like guys who you would think, like, roller
- 17:27Speaker 2: coasters are my thing. They were like, not for a
- 17:29Speaker 2: thousand dollars would I do this? They go, it's not
- 17:33Speaker 2: my thing. I hate them. I hate the feeling of them.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I can't do it. I go, that's weird. I mean,
- 17:38Speaker 2: he was like, this guy's like twenty two or something.
- 17:40Speaker 2: I'm like, dude, this is like your best life. You're
- 17:42Speaker 2: gonna ride roller coasters for your job. No, No, this
- 17:45Speaker 2: is my worst nightmare to be like pressured into this
- 17:47Speaker 2: thing that I'm terrified of. Okay, man, So we just left.
- 17:50Speaker 2: So I joined them after the fourth one because I
- 17:52Speaker 2: was like, I can't do so I didn't ride the
- 17:53Speaker 2: last two. But it was such a funny thing to like,
- 17:57Speaker 2: just you're watching a guy who's like getting to it's
- 18:01Speaker 2: not just that he's living his dream. He's trying to
- 18:03Speaker 2: like build something to where there's gonna be an infrastructure
- 18:06Speaker 2: for people to have jobs and people to have a
- 18:08Speaker 2: place to bring their family. Like it's such a cool thing.
- 18:11Speaker 1: No, I think it's amazing. And I think again, our
- 18:13Speaker 1: city is has a and that's what I love about
- 18:16Speaker 1: what he's doing. Our city has a rich history of it.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Even it went away, you know, And I think that's again,
- 18:22Speaker 1: Stephen Kris Chapman.
- 18:23Speaker 2: What was the reason was it doing poorly when they
- 18:25Speaker 2: pulled the plug on it, man, from what I remember,
- 18:28Speaker 2: or was it just a thing of like we can
- 18:29Speaker 2: make we can more.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Money doing them? All I think is what it was.
- 18:33Speaker 1: And I don't even know. You know, you were getting
- 18:35Speaker 1: into the really litigious part of American history right then
- 18:39Speaker 1: in late twentieth century, if it was just like liability
- 18:42Speaker 1: getting too high and maintaining all these things. But my understanding,
- 18:47Speaker 1: and forgive me.
- 18:48Speaker 2: There's a documentary about it, by the way on YouTube
- 18:51Speaker 2: that somebody did about losing opry Land and people people
- 18:54Speaker 2: being so nostalgic for it and remembering remembering, like I
- 18:56Speaker 2: can't remember when they announced it. We couldn't believe it,
- 18:59Speaker 2: and they're just still gutted by it.
- 19:01Speaker 1: It was right before I went to college, I think.
- 19:03Speaker 1: But again, yeah, they would. My parents would dropped me
- 19:05Speaker 1: off after church on a Sunday, my brother and I
- 19:07Speaker 1: and some friends, and we were just roam the park,
- 19:10Speaker 1: I mean all summer because we had the summer pass
- 19:12Speaker 1: or sometimes Saturday and Sunday, you know, and we just
- 19:16Speaker 1: slept in the petting zoo.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It was great, No, but I mean it was so
- 19:21Speaker 1: much fun. And I'm trying to think I've ever met
- 19:24Speaker 1: a girl there. I think, so I was pretty young.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I think I took a lots if you didn't meet them,
- 19:32Speaker 2: but yeah, it was great.
- 19:35Speaker 1: They were the screaming Delta Demon remember that one, the Chaos,
- 19:41Speaker 1: which is one of the first big It was the
- 19:43Speaker 1: first indoor roller coaster, so chaos.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I never went dopul Inn' that funny East Tennessee, like
- 19:48Speaker 2: Nashville felt like a million miles away from me. We
- 19:50Speaker 2: were dolly with people.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Yeah, was like Nashville's Space Mountain. So it was like
- 19:56Speaker 1: this indoor in the dark with lights and other stuff
- 19:58Speaker 1: thing you waited for ever in that line, you know,
- 20:01Speaker 1: it was all kind of like feel you know, and
- 20:04Speaker 1: strobe you know, kind of right of course, then the
- 20:07Speaker 1: arcades back then you go playing an arcade, man, you
- 20:10Speaker 1: just love to just play the games and ride the train.
- 20:14Speaker 1: They had a train like Dollywood.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and they hold up the train. They have the
- 20:17Speaker 2: gunslingers and hold up the train.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And then do that.
- 20:20Speaker 2: They did So City. That was a big thing.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Then they had the sky almost like the ski lift
- 20:25Speaker 1: sky thing where you could ride from one side of
- 20:26Speaker 1: the park and the Yeah, you know.
- 20:28Speaker 2: So I was asking Nate if he was going to
- 20:29Speaker 2: do that in his park. He didn't. They they were
- 20:31Speaker 2: talking about it. But I mean, I do think that's
- 20:33Speaker 2: pretty cool. But again, it's like it's like a ride
- 20:35Speaker 2: that's not really a ride. You're just like a convenience ride. Yeah,
- 20:38Speaker 2: but I don't know what the plan is but they
- 20:40Speaker 2: have a plan. I mean it's it's pretty cool. Yeah,
- 20:43Speaker 2: It's just it's fun to watch him. He gets so
- 20:46Speaker 2: wide eyed just thinking about like, oh, I want one
- 20:48Speaker 2: of those, and you just got like he gets to
- 20:50Speaker 2: go get one of those.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Like it's pretty cool.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yeah, And just the cool thing that it's going to
- 20:54Speaker 2: create jobs. Like I said, it's gonna it's gonna bring
- 20:57Speaker 2: something that's just bigger than him. And I think that's
- 20:59Speaker 2: what he wants to point in his career.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Well, Nashville, I mean, he can leave a real legacy here.
- 21:04Speaker 1: It's it's a you know, by the way, we just
- 21:06Speaker 1: got to prove the Super Bowl twenty thirty. Yeah, I mean,
- 21:09Speaker 1: so Nashville is already kind of the It's town.
- 21:12Speaker 4: You know.
- 21:13Speaker 2: We can Ward's third in a row.
- 21:15Speaker 1: That's right, that's from that one. We're gonna.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Have you seen our stadium, Like the outside of it
- 21:20Speaker 2: it's pretty ugly right now. Maybe the facade of it's
- 21:22Speaker 2: going to be amazing, but it looks like a big
- 21:24Speaker 2: square brick of I don't.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Think they're going to make an ugly stadium.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I don't think they're allowed anymore. I mean, thing's going
- 21:31Speaker 2: to cost two billion, it's going to be awesome. But
- 21:33Speaker 2: I'm telling you what it looks like now because I
- 21:34Speaker 2: was downtown yesterday. Yeah, it is gross looking.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Well it's being built.
- 21:39Speaker 2: It's just a blob, you know. If it's so square,
- 21:43Speaker 2: it's not got any positz to it like the Convention
- 21:45Speaker 2: Center does has all those undulations and stuff.
- 21:48Speaker 1: This looks The one thing I don't understand a star
- 21:51Speaker 1: about the new stadium is that it's smaller than the
- 21:55Speaker 1: old stadium. And we're trying to host the Super Bowl.
- 21:57Speaker 1: We've made it smaller. Oh, I don't know about man
- 22:00Speaker 1: arrangement or seating capacity. That is interesting, but that whole
- 22:03Speaker 1: like you know, I guess development down by the river
- 22:07Speaker 1: is going to be apparently just unbelievable.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So I live in a development down by the room.
- 22:15Speaker 1: And now think is about that time, John, it's my segment.
- 22:18Speaker 1: They talked about that, not to not to steal anything,
- 22:35Speaker 1: but I don't speak Latin per se. Yeah, but the
- 22:41Speaker 1: original quote here is in Latin. It's a obsequium amicos
- 22:48Speaker 1: veritas odium parit.
- 22:49Speaker 2: I need it'd be a veritas in there somewhere.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Which you know what that is?
- 22:53Speaker 2: No truth?
- 22:54Speaker 1: Yeah, translation, this is from Terrence.
- 22:57Speaker 2: By the way, vino veritas. I know that's the one
- 22:59Speaker 2: Latin saying on those which is uh in wine. There's truth, right,
- 23:03Speaker 2: there's a whole thing about like when you're being when
- 23:05Speaker 2: you're drunk, you're being your real self. That was the old,
- 23:07Speaker 2: like the old the ancients thought that right, and why
- 23:10Speaker 2: there's truth.
- 23:10Speaker 1: This is Terrence, also known as Publius Tarantius Afer, who
- 23:14Speaker 1: was a Roman play right during the Roman Republic. According
- 23:17Speaker 1: to tradition, he was born in and near Carthage in
- 23:19Speaker 1: North Africa, brought the Romans a slave by the senator
- 23:23Speaker 1: Tarentius Lucanus, who was impressed by his abilities, educated him
- 23:27Speaker 1: and later freed him. He became a part of a
- 23:31Speaker 1: literary intellectual group, wrote a bunch of plays, and six
- 23:34Speaker 1: of his comedies survived today, all adapted from different language
- 23:38Speaker 1: of the time, so around one ninety five BC. Anyway,
- 23:43Speaker 1: translation translation, compliance produces friends, Truth produces hatred. Huh, compliance
- 23:51Speaker 1: produces friends and truth produces hatred. You know, and I think,
- 23:56Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to. I don't want to
- 23:58Speaker 1: get into culture wars, and all of a sudden, it's
- 24:00Speaker 1: just funny how we say that now when like we
- 24:04Speaker 1: don't want to just address blatant elephants in the room.
- 24:08Speaker 1: If there's one thing that drives me crazy, it's like
- 24:12Speaker 1: the obvious thing that we're not talking about, you know.
- 24:16Speaker 1: But even then, I'm not going to talk about some
- 24:17Speaker 1: of the obvious things we're not talking about. But I
- 24:19Speaker 1: do think we can talk about the obvious principles at
- 24:22Speaker 1: all times. In fact, I believe pastorally, it's really important
- 24:26Speaker 1: what we that we rightly believe certain things. And I mean,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I'm thinking about AI. I'm thinking about sort of the
- 24:38Speaker 1: assault on the press and media to the point that
- 24:45Speaker 1: if you don't like what somebody writes, now, instead of
- 24:48Speaker 1: like checking their sources or finding out if it's real
- 24:51Speaker 1: or going back to the original clip or whatever and
- 24:54Speaker 1: finding out what said, you can just say that's not real.
- 24:57Speaker 1: And that's getting dangerous to thought. And then I think
- 25:01Speaker 1: about the teenagers that I talked to in their perception
- 25:06Speaker 1: of what truth is in that I have to tell
- 25:11Speaker 1: my daughter all the time, like, listen, there's going to
- 25:13Speaker 1: be a nuggetive truth, but if you got it from TikTok,
- 25:15Speaker 1: there's a good chance it's not reliable. So it's okay
- 25:19Speaker 1: to start there, but you need to learn to go
- 25:21Speaker 1: other sources to verify or to look. But like this
- 25:26Speaker 1: idea of and I do believe this, and I think
- 25:29Speaker 1: this is even true from Jesus, Like the scriptures say
- 25:32Speaker 1: that you shall know the truth, and the truth will
- 25:34Speaker 1: set you free, right, And we'd love to quote that,
- 25:39Speaker 1: but there's a lot of context to that idea that
- 25:43Speaker 1: actually many people hear the truth that doesn't set them free.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Just wasn't like just a truth automatically sets free. And
- 25:49Speaker 1: I think that Terrence was maybe right on some things.
- 25:53Speaker 1: There's a lot of times that truth produces hatred, and
- 25:55Speaker 1: it certainly did in Christ's life, where he would speak
- 25:57Speaker 1: truth in a way that they crucified him for it.
- 26:01Speaker 1: And I think also it causes you to go, well,
- 26:04Speaker 1: if I'm well liked, or I have friends, or I
- 26:06Speaker 1: have I seem to have no like the way I
- 26:10Speaker 1: am in the world, the way I believe, what I
- 26:12Speaker 1: what I say, what I do, is not producing any pushback.
- 26:15Speaker 1: And it goes back to our conversation. I want friends
- 26:17Speaker 1: who push back, Like I want friends to say, hey,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I know what your heart is, but here's maybe where
- 26:22Speaker 1: you're off or whatever. Like I long for that guidance
- 26:24Speaker 1: and that maybe maybe to a fault. But man, when
- 26:32Speaker 1: when nothing's pushing back in your life, then I think
- 26:35Speaker 1: it should cause you to stop and go hmm, like
- 26:38Speaker 1: I'm not. I'm not sure that's where I should be.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Am I complying?
- 26:41Speaker 4: Right? Am?
- 26:42Speaker 1: I am? I just conforming to a more comfortable way
- 26:49Speaker 1: of thought. If everything I see just reinforces only what
- 26:54Speaker 1: I already believe, and especially to its most extreme place,
- 26:58Speaker 1: and especially when that extreme place it removes the humanity
- 27:06Speaker 1: or the human value of another or completely discounts their argument,
- 27:13Speaker 1: then I need to beware.
- 27:15Speaker 2: So there is a.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Podcast I was telling you about this yesterday.
- 27:17Speaker 4: I thing.
- 27:21Speaker 1: So I wrote a book from mister Jim haslm the
- 27:22Speaker 1: second he's ninety four ninety five now, who founded Pilot
- 27:26Speaker 1: Corporation and got to kind of chronicle his life and
- 27:29Speaker 1: journey and through the fifties and with General Neelan from Tennessee.
- 27:32Speaker 1: He played football for him, and it was just it
- 27:34Speaker 1: was a great University of Tennessee kind of thing. And
- 27:37Speaker 1: so mister Haslam's one of his sons was Governor Bill Haslam,
- 27:42Speaker 1: who was the two term governor of Tennessee. And I
- 27:44Speaker 1: got to meet him a lot and get to know him,
- 27:46Speaker 1: and he was known very much for being someone who
- 27:50Speaker 1: worked with everybody. You know. He wrote a book called
- 27:54Speaker 1: Faithful Presence with Thomas Nelson about how to express your
- 27:59Speaker 1: faith in the public square. And again, there's no politician
- 28:01Speaker 1: or anyone you're going to have out there that you
- 28:02Speaker 1: agree with everything they do, or if you do, again,
- 28:05Speaker 1: then beware of what Terrence is saying. Right, I mean,
- 28:07Speaker 1: at some point you should not agree with that. There
- 28:10Speaker 1: should not be anyone besides Jesus Christ himself, and even
- 28:12Speaker 1: then us what Jesus says, you may have a hard
- 28:15Speaker 1: time agreeing with that. That's when you obey it right
- 28:17Speaker 1: against what you want to do, or what we call
- 28:19Speaker 1: it obedience. But their governor Haslam is doing a podcast
- 28:25Speaker 1: with Governor Brettison, Phil Bretison, who is a two term
- 28:29Speaker 1: Democratic governor, and it's called you Just Might Be Right,
- 28:34Speaker 1: And I think they're gone on like five seasons and
- 28:35Speaker 1: it's like wildly popular. But a democratic, a two term
- 28:39Speaker 1: Democratic Tennessee governor and a two term republic Tennessee governor
- 28:42Speaker 1: sit down and they discuss issues in the way that
- 28:45Speaker 1: we're supposed to not just an American society, but they
- 28:49Speaker 1: also come from a place of how their faith would
- 28:52Speaker 1: inform the way they respect their opponents. And it's a
- 28:56Speaker 1: reason the reason is so wildly popular is it's so
- 28:58Speaker 1: rare now, like that we would do that, and compromise
- 29:01Speaker 1: has become Compromise is a word you can use in
- 29:03Speaker 1: two different ways. You've compromised your morals or hey, man,
- 29:06Speaker 1: let's find a compromise. And we only think about the
- 29:08Speaker 1: first way. Now, we never think about compromises being a
- 29:11Speaker 1: good thing. But the reason they say you might be
- 29:15Speaker 1: right is there they're quoting senator right. There was a
- 29:22Speaker 1: senator who also was in Reagan's cabinet named James Baker,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and there's the James Baker School or Center for Public
- 29:33Speaker 1: Discourse or whatever the University of Tennessee now. And it
- 29:35Speaker 1: was one of mister Haslam's kind of mentors and heroes.
- 29:38Speaker 1: He's back in the seventies sixty seventies, And that was
- 29:42Speaker 1: something said, is, hey, the reason you listen to your
- 29:44Speaker 1: opponent is and you actually take to heart what they
- 29:47Speaker 1: say is there's a chance that they might be right
- 29:49Speaker 1: and you're wrong. And that's how public discourse is supposed
- 29:53Speaker 1: to happen. It's how relationships work. Right, if you enter
- 29:56Speaker 1: into something where you think there's no chance that this
- 30:01Speaker 1: person could say anything. And I sometimes we'll start a
- 30:04Speaker 1: conversation like that, like, hey, before we say anything about
- 30:06Speaker 1: this this debatable topic, to be truthful with me, is
- 30:10Speaker 1: there anything I could say? Anything I could say you
- 30:13Speaker 1: think that would change your mind at all in any
- 30:15Speaker 1: minute way? And if you go no, there's nothing you
- 30:17Speaker 1: could do, then what are we going to talk about?
- 30:19Speaker 1: And I will say to them, there are things you
- 30:21Speaker 1: could say I would love to hear. I want to
- 30:23Speaker 1: be open, you know, to this thing. So I think
- 30:27Speaker 1: that people may wonder, and I'm not trying to mix
- 30:31Speaker 1: politics with a religious conversation on this, but the point
- 30:35Speaker 1: is not that our politics should look like our religion
- 30:39Speaker 1: at all, because I think those things constitutionally.
- 30:44Speaker 2: There.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Whether the phrase separation of church and state ever exists,
- 30:48Speaker 1: certainly in practice, the idea was, Hey, we want to
- 30:51Speaker 1: make this a place where regardless of what you believe,
- 30:53Speaker 1: you're allowed to believe. That that's you know, in the
- 30:56Speaker 1: Bill of Rights, you protect those things. But I think
- 31:00Speaker 1: that what we missed inn is that whatever your faith is,
- 31:03Speaker 1: it's supposed to inform the way you show up in
- 31:06Speaker 1: government or politics or public service, and that means being
- 31:12Speaker 1: willing to speak truth even if you know someone's going
- 31:16Speaker 1: to disagree with you because of it, or possibly even
- 31:19Speaker 1: hate you for it, and knowing that if we're all
- 31:21Speaker 1: just complying with something in order to not lose, we
- 31:25Speaker 1: may have a lot of friends, but we may not
- 31:27Speaker 1: be really dealing with truth in the way that we could.
- 31:33Speaker 1: So I get that there's political realities. I totally understand that.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I get that everything that can be said doesn't have
- 31:38Speaker 1: to always be said. I understand I'm not naive about it,
- 31:43Speaker 1: but I think that we've gone so far down the
- 31:44Speaker 1: slope the other way now that it's pretty much a
- 31:47Speaker 1: game of compliance on all sides, just trying to keep
- 31:50Speaker 1: as many friends so that we can keep power and influence.
- 31:53Speaker 1: When a little bit of truth might produce some hatred,
- 31:54Speaker 1: it also might might just save the country.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Johnny Oscar Wilde said, if you want to tell people
- 32:00Speaker 2: the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Is that why you do what you do?
- 32:07Speaker 2: That's because listen, am I a truth teller? I don't
- 32:10Speaker 2: want to am I hero?
- 32:12Speaker 1: That's for you to decide, But yes, Terence Publius, Tarantius Roman.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yeah, John, let's do my thing. Let's start with Johnny's
- 32:27Speaker 2: old jokes. We call it joke about that a few
- 32:35Speaker 2: old jokes today, John. A woman who speaks Spanish walks
- 32:39Speaker 2: into a department store. She walks over to the clerk
- 32:41Speaker 2: and says, don't das don los chlctines. Clerk doesn't understand Spanish.
- 32:47Speaker 2: She tries to help her anyways. He holds up a
- 32:48Speaker 2: T shirt and says, this what you need. Shakes her head, frowning.
- 32:51Speaker 2: He holds up a pair of pants. She shakes her
- 32:53Speaker 2: head again. After five or six attempts, he holds up
- 32:54Speaker 2: a pair of socks with an exasperated look. The woman
- 32:58Speaker 2: smiles and says, yes, so c ks. The clerks gets
- 33:00Speaker 2: a surfaces is if you knew how to spell it,
- 33:02Speaker 2: why don't we just start with that a Spanish joke.
- 33:06Speaker 1: It's a Spanish joke, it is, and your pronunciation was exquisite.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Thank you. Look Calcatines like Lord Calcatine from the Star
- 33:15Speaker 2: Wars movies. Dun't dance downal little Calcatines. Is it Calcatines
- 33:18Speaker 2: or count?
- 33:19Speaker 1: I don't remember how pronounced socks.
- 33:20Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 33:23Speaker 2: I thought it was done.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Day.
- 33:25Speaker 2: A woman John on one walks into a pharmacy. My
- 33:28Speaker 2: husband is constantly complaining about chest pains, difficulty to breathe in,
- 33:31Speaker 2: cramps and nausea. Have you got any earpucks? Finally, John,
- 33:37Speaker 2: an old woman goes to the news. But there's a
- 33:40Speaker 2: lot of women in these jokes. An old woman goes
- 33:42Speaker 2: to the newspaper office after her husband dies, says to
- 33:44Speaker 2: the person at the front desk that she needs to
- 33:46Speaker 2: get an obituary published for her husband. She gets brought
- 33:49Speaker 2: into an office and that is asked what she wants
- 33:51Speaker 2: the obituary to say. She thinks and says, Fred Smith died.
- 33:55Speaker 2: The reporter looks at her and says, miss you can
- 33:57Speaker 2: have it, save more than that if you want so.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Little lady things for a second, says Fred Smith died.
- 34:02Speaker 5: Boat for sale, dish poor Fred, the institution of marriage.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Well, I mean maybe they just maybe she just was
- 34:15Speaker 2: maybe she hated that boat, but she was ready, ready
- 34:18Speaker 2: to cash in on poor Fred.
- 34:19Speaker 1: That's great.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Poor Fred's untimely to mind. John. Let's do this week
- 34:23Speaker 2: in history, we call it talk about then, John, did
- 34:30Speaker 2: you know this week nineteen fifty a tornado passed over
- 34:34Speaker 2: a chicken coop in lynnslate England. It caused a sudden
- 34:40Speaker 2: dropping pressure so severe that it plucked the feathers off
- 34:43Speaker 2: all the chickens. The chickens survived. It's like a Looney
- 34:48Speaker 2: Tunes cartoon.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Yeah, featherless chickens.
- 34:50Speaker 2: It's just the tornado come and they're all like running
- 34:53Speaker 2: around covering themselves. Oh my, like demure Southern ladies.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I think I feel a draft.
- 35:04Speaker 2: They were plucked. They lived, but you know.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Now think about it, you really want to cook them
- 35:11Speaker 1: and eat it. Yeah, now you're like skipped to the
- 35:12Speaker 1: hard part.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it really did. Yes, tough. Well, I mean it
- 35:16Speaker 2: says they survived, but it didn't say for how much longer.
- 35:18Speaker 2: I mean, they're chicken, So it's not a great life,
- 35:21Speaker 2: no John. Speaking of foul, The NBC Peacock debuted this
- 35:29Speaker 2: week nineteen fifty six. It aired its feathers, making its
- 35:34Speaker 2: first on air appearance. NBC used the peacock to promote this.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I did not know. This is very savvy. They used
- 35:40Speaker 2: the peacock to promote their color programming and encourage viewers
- 35:43Speaker 2: to buy color TV sets because NBC's owner RCA manufactured
- 35:47Speaker 2: those color TVs. So this choice of a Peacock was
- 35:52Speaker 2: a boy moved to sell. So you'd be looking at
- 35:55Speaker 2: your dumb black and white TV and be like, man,
- 35:58Speaker 2: be nice if I could see the color.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Mom, Yeah, She's like, No, we're poor. You're not
- 36:09Speaker 1: spending fifty dollars on the TV.
- 36:11Speaker 2: I mean, I don't I think the first TVs were mother,
- 36:13Speaker 2: Were they?
- 36:14Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I mean, but Today's money Go Nicholson.
- 36:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but that is interesting to me that they chose
- 36:21Speaker 2: it specifically because of the anyway, John, this.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Week that had a hint by the way of like
- 36:26Speaker 1: conspiracy in it. When you told it, I just think
- 36:28Speaker 1: that's good.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I can't money well, I mean money's honey.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Hey, you know how much we make on this podcast.
- 36:38Speaker 1: They're doing pretty good.
- 36:39Speaker 2: John. How would you find more episodes of the podcast?
- 36:41Speaker 2: If you wanted to do such a thing.

- 36:52Speaker 2: a sponsor, a patron or A sponsor or, a sponsor,

- 36:58Speaker 2: support the show, we give you add free content and uh,
- 37:01Speaker 2: you know, so listen, that's not we don't. We do
- 37:04Speaker 2: it out of the goodness of our Yeah, John, This
- 37:07Speaker 2: week nineteen o three, by television, This week nineteen oh three. Yeah,
- 37:11Speaker 2: they're like twelve dollars now for an eighty inch This
- 37:14Speaker 2: week nineteen oh three, John, The first automobile crossed the
- 37:18Speaker 2: US under its own power.
- 37:22Speaker 1: What did it do? I don't know that I had
- 37:24Speaker 1: automobiles pulled by animals or something. I don't know animal.
- 37:27Speaker 2: But the trip began by departing from San Francisco headed
- 37:30Speaker 2: for New York City. The automobile was a nineteen o
- 37:32Speaker 2: three two cylinder twenty horsepower Winton touring car driven by
- 37:37Speaker 2: doctor Horatio Nelson Jackson with his mechanics Sewell Crocker, and
- 37:42Speaker 2: a bulldog, bulldog named Bud that they picked up along
- 37:45Speaker 2: the way. Why is this not a Disney movie?
- 37:47Speaker 4: Wow?
- 37:47Speaker 1: That was a long trip.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Picked up a bulldog and like there was a photo
- 37:51Speaker 2: with this listing and it showed showed Bud the bulldog.
- 37:55Speaker 2: The trip was undertaken.
- 37:56Speaker 1: How did they know the bulldog's name?
- 37:57Speaker 2: They named it Bud? Told him the trip was undertaken
- 38:03Speaker 2: on a fifty dollars seventeen hundred and fifty dollars in
- 38:05Speaker 2: today's money. Bat And proved that automobiles were a viable
- 38:09Speaker 2: form of long distance transportation. Their journey took sixty three days,
- 38:15Speaker 2: arriving in New York City on July twenty sixth and
- 38:18Speaker 2: using over eight hundred US gallons of gasoline. After the trip,
- 38:23Speaker 2: Bud became a celebrity in his own right and was
- 38:25Speaker 2: used in advertisements or Winton Automobiles advertisements. Huh is that
- 38:30Speaker 2: how you say advertisements? Advertisements? Advertisements is a proper pronunciation
- 38:35Speaker 2: if you live in England. Well, we had just done
- 38:39Speaker 2: the whole thing about being plucked alive in England, and
- 38:41Speaker 2: so I felt like, well, well, how would the chickens
- 38:44Speaker 2: pronounce this?
- 38:46Speaker 1: Do you say? Did you say prestigious or prestigious?
- 38:49Speaker 2: Prestigious?
- 38:50Speaker 1: See you say I say prestigious.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Well let's call it.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Let's call the whole.
- 38:54Speaker 2: Thing, John this, I don't see vitamins or anything or
- 38:57Speaker 2: schedule or not that far gone John. This Week seventeen
- 39:03Speaker 2: eighty five, Benjamin Franklin writes a letter describing his design
- 39:06Speaker 2: for what he called quote double Spectacles.
- 39:09Speaker 1: Now no, as I'm sorry, sorry, hold on has lost
- 39:14Speaker 1: the name.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Plow and you're wearing them. Probably no bifocals. His invention
- 39:18Speaker 2: consisted for pair of glasses in which the upper part
- 39:20Speaker 2: of the lens and lower part of lens had each
- 39:22Speaker 2: had different focusing powers. This allowed Franklin to focus on
- 39:24Speaker 2: distant objects when looking up and near objects when looking down.
- 39:28Speaker 2: I can't get used to them, so I still have
- 39:30Speaker 2: I only wear glasses when I drive and h or
- 39:33Speaker 2: when I'm in an airport and I need to see
- 39:34Speaker 2: signs far away. I'll wear them sometimes, But other than that,
- 39:37Speaker 2: I don't wear them because I just because now all
- 39:39Speaker 2: close up stuff looks blurry to me, and I could
- 39:42Speaker 2: just get bifocals or whatever whatever they're called progressives. Yes, can't.
- 39:45Speaker 2: I can't get I can't imagine getting used to it.
- 39:47Speaker 2: So I just need to bite the bullet and do it.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Don't it just be a glazy guy.
- 39:50Speaker 1: My wife hates it. She won't do it either.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't. I don't like the way they
- 39:53Speaker 2: look on my face.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I don't mind on my face, but I wear only
- 39:58Speaker 1: reading glasses. But now I can't see hardly any thing,
- 40:00Speaker 1: like on my table or whatever without little glasses so
- 40:03Speaker 1: or like at meals, I have to see that to
- 40:04Speaker 1: see the other person. Well, it's bad. My eyes have
- 40:07Speaker 1: gotten worse. Podcast about Edging Dark.
- 40:11Speaker 2: End of the show. Yeah John. Finally, this week, sixteen
- 40:14Speaker 2: twenty six, the island of Manhattan was purchased from the
- 40:18Speaker 2: Indians by Peter Minuittt for the Dutch for goods valued
- 40:22Speaker 2: at cost cost of Manhattan.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Fifteen dollars twenty four dollars.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Wow, and uh, now you can buy a sandwich in
- 40:33Speaker 2: Manhattan for about twenty four dollars. Yeah, just a a
- 40:38Speaker 2: waffle cone ice cream is twenty four dollars in Manhattan.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Yeah that sounds good.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Park your car for five minutes. Yeah, it's an expensive place,
- 40:48Speaker 2: is what we're way.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, you're not catching on. It's uh, but.
- 40:52Speaker 2: They did the right thing because now it smells like
- 40:54Speaker 2: hot garbage all the time. I actually like New York.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I don't think I could live there, but it is
- 40:58Speaker 2: a very high energy. Like being there is a very
- 41:01Speaker 2: it's a very specific energy.
- 41:02Speaker 1: My wife and I want to live there for three months.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Three months, I think like a sabbatical. Maybe one time
- 41:06Speaker 2: we like have.
- 41:07Speaker 1: That experience and then we'd be ready.
- 41:08Speaker 2: I think to what if it didn't What if it
- 41:10Speaker 2: didn't fade. You know, we're people.
- 41:12Speaker 1: What if like I got a job as an executive
- 41:15Speaker 1: at RCA.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Square foot efficiency, Yeah, it could be.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. Don't think I'm big.
- 41:22Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 41:23Speaker 2: I'm not cut out for the big city. I like
- 41:24Speaker 2: traveling to big cities, and then I like getting back.
- 41:27Speaker 2: I always feel good getting back home. I like a
- 41:29Speaker 2: home base.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I love to travel, but yes, I want to
- 41:34Speaker 1: go home. But I don't know almost where you hang
- 41:37Speaker 1: your hat, it's wherever my family is, Johnny. It's true, actually,
- 41:41Speaker 1: but I'm not. If my family's with me out traveling,
- 41:44Speaker 1: then I'm good, you know what I'm saying. But like
- 41:46Speaker 1: if they're not, then I'm like, yeah, I want to
- 41:47Speaker 1: go home. I think that's like the whole that I
- 41:50Speaker 1: have to take care of them thing, so have to,
- 41:53Speaker 1: john Well, yeah, it's duty and honor.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Is that? How about get to.
- 42:00Speaker 1: To take care of and fun?
- 42:04Speaker 2: Well?
- 42:04Speaker 1: God, well, you know, Johnny, we learned a lot today
- 42:08Speaker 1: we did. I think that people walk.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Along the chicken. Honestly, I'm craving chicken.
- 42:13Speaker 1: And craving that featherless chicken. Yeah, and almost ran over
- 42:19Speaker 1: a turkey yesterday in the road.
- 42:22Speaker 2: I hope no, just.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Funny story. I think Johnny's got a lot of shows
- 42:30Speaker 1: coming up that you guys need to be I do.
- 42:32Speaker 2: In fact, I don't know when this will. This will

- 42:52Speaker 2: Telling the story, and you know, we may have some
- 42:53Speaker 2: visual aids that were whipping up for everybody. Because I
- 42:57Speaker 2: feel like I owe him an explanation these crowds, Are
- 42:59Speaker 2: you making a joke?
- 43:00Speaker 1: Says you got it?
- 43:00Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. I feel like these people are owed an
- 43:02Speaker 2: explanation more than the others because they had tickets and
- 43:05Speaker 2: all that they had to wait and get the dumb
- 43:07Speaker 2: rescheduled dates.
- 43:07Speaker 1: What if they're like, I just wanted the hits.
