- 0:14royalty. Adam Cox.
- 0:16These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:19world famous Harley Street. This podcast features powerful
- 0:23hypnosis, so do not listen while driving or operating machinery.
- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi. It's Adam here, and you're about
- 0:43to listen to a hypnosis session all about reducing alcohol,
- 0:49particularly in two specific situations.
- 0:53So we're not talking about social drinking and we're not
- 0:56talking about celebratory drinking.
- 0:58What we're talking about here is mindless drinking or emotional
- 1:03drinking. And I would say that the average
- 1:05person that drinks alcohol, this is about 70 or 80% or higher of
- 1:11the kind of drinking that they're doing.
- 1:13So mindless drinking is the opposite of mindful drinking.
- 1:18Mindless is that you're watching TV, you're having a
- 1:22conversation, and you're drinking without even realizing
- 1:26that you're drinking. No attention to the taste or
- 1:29really the experience. It's just happening on autopilot
- 1:33and quite often you see people doing that.
- 1:35They're lost in conversation or they're immersed in watching ATV
- 1:39show, but the drink goes up to the lips and they're drinking
- 1:43completely on autopilot. So mindless drinking could be a
- 1:48way that people have excess alcohol and all of the
- 1:51consequences, health and emotionally that that incurs.
- 1:55And then the other side is emotional drinking, and it's
- 1:59very different if you're enjoying a glass of wine or a
- 2:02beer in good company on a good occasion, celebrating something
- 2:07or just really enjoying the time.
- 2:09But a lot of people use alcohol to deal with stress, to deal
- 2:13with overwhelm, to deal with frustration.
- 2:16If they're annoyed or angry or upset, then they'll have a drink
- 2:20to kind of calm their nerves. Some people do it if they are
- 2:24really nervous or anxious. And it's that Dutch courage.
- 2:28The problem is, is that alcohol does kind of work in those kind
- 2:32of situations. It just doesn't work for very
- 2:35long. And that creates the very
- 2:37foundation of an addictive loop because if it feels like it's
- 2:41working, you're going to do it again when you're in a similar
- 2:44situation. So if someone feels very, very
- 2:47stressed, you know, and a couple of drinks helps, they're like,
- 2:50oh, this works. And then that creates that
- 2:53automatic habit or pattern in the future.
- 2:57So this hypnosis session is designed to deal with that type
- 3:01of drinking. So this is useful for the kind
- 3:05of people that don't want to be teetotal.
- 3:07It's not that they want to quit alcohol, they just want to drink
- 3:10less. Now here's the interesting
- 3:12thing. If you were to reduce the amount
- 3:14of mindless drinking and emotional coping drinking and
- 3:19keep the drinking that isn't that, well, actually your
- 3:23enjoyment of drinking would remain the same for the drinking
- 3:28that you have, but you would be losing the emotional drinking
- 3:31and mindless drinking that isn't giving you that much pleasure
- 3:34anyway. So you could reduce your amount
- 3:37that you're drinking by about 70 or 80%, but not reduce the
- 3:41pleasure connected to drinking at all.
- 3:44Obviously, this session was created for a client that I was
- 3:47working with, so some of the suggestions might be perfect for
- 3:50them and not quite right for you.
- 3:52So if you do like the idea of working with me directly, look
- 3:56at the link in the description and you can schedule a free
- 3:59consultation call so that we can explore what that would be like
- 4:02to work together. For now though, find a quiet,
- 4:05comfortable place where you won't be disturbed.
- 4:07Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 4:50you breathe in, breathe in that slow, long breath of relaxation.
- 4:59And as you exhale, just allow any feelings of stress and
- 5:08tension to slowly feel like it's leaving your body in your
- 5:13outward breath, breathing in that relaxation.
- 5:18And as you exhale, just allow your eyelids to close.
- 5:25That's it. And the moment they close,
- 5:32become aware that you can listen to the sound of my voice even
- 5:37more intently. The deeper you breathe, the more
- 5:43relaxed you become. And the more relaxed you become,
- 5:49the deeper you breathe. As your body relaxes, your
- 5:56imagination awakens and I wonder if you could imagine a trail
- 6:05that leads to a secret garden. Just imagine a sunny day, blue
- 6:13skies, a gentle breeze. Imagine perhaps a path that is
- 6:23surrounded by trees seems to be taking you somewhere, somewhere
- 6:32important and allow that trail to take you to a garden.
- 6:44And in this garden is various vegetable patches for all
- 6:52different things to grow. I want you to think of all the
- 6:59seasons being condensed in this one garden of your imagination.
- 7:06Some things are just seeds and other things are fully ripe,
- 7:13ready to harvest. You intuitively know that if you
- 7:21plant a pumpkin seed, only a pumpkin can grow.
- 7:26That what you reap you will sow, and what you sow you will reap.
- 7:34And I want you to get a sense that that is as true in your
- 7:37life as it is in a garden. And I want you to imagine that
- 7:48long, long ago, a seed was planted deep in the soil of your
- 7:56unconscious mind, a seed of an idea that took root, that
- 8:06perhaps alcohol or a glass of wine was useful, was necessary,
- 8:17was helpful in certain situations.
- 8:23And for many children, that seed is planted when they see someone
- 8:29they love or respect drinking alcohol.
- 8:33In those kind of situations, the seed is planted.
- 8:40And maybe you know when that very first seed was planted for
- 8:44you, or maybe you don't. Maybe the seed was planted
- 8:50without you even knowing it. I want you to get a sense then.
- 8:59Sometimes there is a big difference between our
- 9:06intentions and the strategies we use to meet those intentions.
- 9:13I want you to get a sense then your intentions all along have
- 9:20been positive. Your mind, your unconscious, has
- 9:26been trying to protect you, to help you.
- 9:34They give you more good feelings and less bad ones.
- 9:40But what if the intentions are wonderful and the strategy just
- 9:46not quite right? As you stare into the soil of
- 9:52that vegetable patch, I want you to think of a seed that was
- 9:57planted perhaps 18 years ago. And maybe that was someone else
- 10:09drinking more. And you feel perhaps a
- 10:16expectation, an obligation, or just drifted into a habit of
- 10:23drinking more and more. And I want you to think that
- 10:30knowing what you now know, if you could go all the way back to
- 10:35that moment, you might give yourself a boundary.
- 10:46And that boundary probably wouldn't be no alcohol.
- 10:51It would be alcohol when you desire it, perhaps alcohol when
- 11:00it enhances inexperience, not just to fit in or keep up or
- 11:10because it's there. Don't need to get a sense that a
- 11:14boundary would have kept you in that perfect equilibrium of
- 11:24moderation and not dependency. Stare into a different part of
- 11:32that vegetable patch, see something growing, and think
- 11:37back to three years ago at a time when you were going through
- 11:43difficult moments. I want you to get a sense that
- 11:48perhaps knowing what you now know, a boundary would also have
- 11:54been useful. A boundary that would stop you
- 12:00drinking to numb difficult emotions.
- 12:06Perhaps it wouldn't mean that you stop drinking altogether,
- 12:12but what if you refuse to drink? If it felt like it was self
- 12:18medication, maybe that would be a useful boundary, but you get
- 12:26to decide what boundaries would have been useful for your past
- 12:32in order to figure out a useful boundary for you now as you
- 12:40breathe in and breathe out there in that garden of your mind.
- 12:45I want you to get a sense then if a boundary would have helped
- 12:5018 years ago and a boundary would have helped three years
- 12:54ago, it's highly probable that a boundary will help you right
- 13:01now. And there's a Chinese proverb
- 13:09the best time to plant a tree is 10 years ago, and the second
- 13:14best time is right now. And if knowing what you now
- 13:19know, you would have been forced or introduced a boundary in your
- 13:23past and didn't, then it probably makes sense to
- 13:29introduce a similar boundary now.
- 13:35And just imagine the idea of a boundary being a seed that you
- 13:39plant in that soil and imagine it taking root.
- 13:46A new way to find the right balance for you and the future
- 13:51you desire. I want you to get a feeling that
- 14:01you're going deeper and deeper, relaxed.
- 14:03And I want you to imagine that there is a chair, a comfortable
- 14:09chair in that garden, the garden at the end of the trail.
- 14:18Make yourself comfortable in that chair.
- 14:20Maybe a comfy chair, declining chairs, something you can deeply
- 14:26relax while looking at the incredible plants growing in
- 14:34this garden of your mind. I want you to get a sense.
- 14:45Then you're beginning to discover there's a new way, a
- 14:55better way to honour those unconscious positive intentions.
- 15:05You might find it easy now to recognize the difference between
- 15:10drinking consciously and mindfully and drinking
- 15:16automatically. Because when you are celebrating
- 15:22with friends, laughing and connecting, or perhaps on a
- 15:27special date night, feeling the magic or the connection of that
- 15:31evening, or maybe when you're on a trip or a vacation, relaxing,
- 15:40just enjoying the richness of life, having a glass of
- 15:46Chardonnay becomes a conscious choice, a moment of joy and
- 15:52presence that enhances your life.
- 15:56Not to numb pain, not to regulate your emotions.
- 16:02Because it consciously and discerningly adds value.
- 16:08And that can feel good, and it can feel right.
- 16:14Because it's a choice made with awareness and with love.
- 16:22I'm talking about something on the other side of that boundary,
- 16:27perhaps a familiar urge to drink, that habitual drinking,
- 16:35autopilot drinking, perhaps from a need to numb, to escape or to
- 16:42cope. I want you to get a feeling that
- 16:46in those moments, just imagine finding it easy or at least
- 16:53possible to pause, to breathe, to listen to your true needs.
- 17:05I want you to get a centered in the same moments that you used
- 17:10to drink. You realize that you have so
- 17:16many beautiful options and alternatives.
- 17:24I want you to imagine feeling that overwhelming sense of
- 17:33stress or anxiety and feeling that you've got different
- 17:43choices. I want you to imagine being in
- 17:48the same situation that you would have drunk before, but
- 17:51this time imagine stepping outside, feeling the fresh air
- 18:01the sky wide above you, or listening to music that just
- 18:07resonates with your frequency, your vibe, either at home on
- 18:14speakers or through headphones, wherever you are.
- 18:19What if you can find release at the elevation and the frequency
- 18:23of sound and what it just wants? That works better than a glass
- 18:29of wine ever would. And the more you practice this
- 18:35pause, this loving reflection, the easier it becomes.
- 18:45What if the autopilot of the past fades away, the automatic
- 18:50drinking becomes a thing of the past and new autopilot responses
- 18:58are introduced? Feel that you are activating
- 19:04your neuroplasticity, your ability to form new neural
- 19:10pathways or awaken old ones, the ones that know how to feel good
- 19:17with no need for alcohol. What if your future is more
- 19:24conscious, joyful celebration, discerning drinking of wine, not
- 19:32dependent drinking of wine. Because you're not giving up
- 19:38anything you truly love, you're protecting it, preserving it so
- 19:48that sooner or later it will be the case that when you do drink
- 19:56a glass of wine, it's part of something desirable, wonderful,
- 20:04something that enhances your life, something chosen,
- 20:07something that enriches your experience and you can honour
- 20:15the intention behind. What you used to do what you
- 20:20used to do. But what if you meet your real
- 20:25needs with better strategies and gifts that you can give
- 20:30yourself? Every healthy choice you make?
- 20:37Maybe a long walk, time in fresh air, time spent with friends or
- 20:46listening to music. I want you to feel that there
- 20:49are so many different things that you can do that are ways to
- 20:53regulate your emotions, to feel that you are being kind and
- 21:00loving to yourself. Things that make you feel in
- 21:08control. And I wonder if you might
- 21:15already imagine, in the days and weeks ahead, a moment where you
- 21:23lean into the emotion, to pause, to reflect, to choose
- 21:28consciously an alternative. And you can enjoy wine when it
- 21:38fits the moment. A celebration, a connection, a
- 21:42memory in the making. The boundary is to protect you
- 21:48from those mindless drinking. Not the mindful drinking, the
- 21:54coping, the numbing, the distraction.
- 22:00If it feels like you're doing it to self medicate, to numb, to
- 22:08change your state rather than enhance it, consider it on the
- 22:14other side of that boundary and you can picture that boundary
- 22:17like a brick wall or an electrified fence or the other
- 22:24side of a river that you can't reach.
- 22:29Turn the metaphorical boundary into a physical boundary and
- 22:35know what is on your side of the boundary that you want to keep
- 22:39and what is on the other side. Then knowing what you now know
- 22:45you feel is a better boundary to keep the pleasure and reduce
- 22:53that mindless drinking that wasn't really helping anyway.
- 22:58Because so many other things would work more effectively.
- 23:04Because you have so many ways to care for yourself now, so many
- 23:09ways to live fully and well. And each conscious choice
- 23:15deepens your confidence, your joy, your sense of living with
- 23:20heart and meaning. Because you are learning, you're
- 23:25growing, and you are taking your life in a wonderful new
- 23:32direction. The direction where you keep the
- 23:36good stuff and enhance those things that were leading to
- 23:43loops of dependency. As you think about your future,
- 23:50look at these moments that would have led to a glass of wine or
- 23:55even poured into a paper club as an opportunity to dry up old
- 24:03streams and introduce new ones to reawaken the rivers in your
- 24:08mind that enhance the quality of your life.
- 24:15I want you to imagine leaving that comfy chair in that garden
- 24:20of your mind and see that seed of an idea of a new boundary
- 24:28already starting to sprout. And you will nurture this new
- 24:33habit with sunshine and rainwater by taking the
- 24:39opportunity to nurture this new boundary.
- 24:48A delicate, vulnerable plant needs support.
- 24:52And a delicate, vulnerable new habit needs your nurturing and
- 24:57protection until it gets to a certain size that it doesn't
- 25:02need protecting at all. It can just grow and grow until
- 25:09that's just the way it is. You start to leave the garden
- 25:16back down the trail. I want you to notice two or
- 25:18three weeds and allow these weeds to represent something
- 25:25from your past that is still connected to an emotion.
- 25:29And imagine pulling these weeds out by the roots, and in doing
- 25:36so feel that you can remember certain moments of your past
- 25:41without being emotionally connected to them.
- 25:44You retain the wisdom, but not the pain.
- 25:50And you leave that garden, walking down the trail all the
- 25:55way back to the here and the now.
- 25:56So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 26:01nose. Wiggle your fingers and wiggle
- 26:04your toes. Connect and calibrate into the
- 26:06here and the now. That's it.
- 26:10As I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 26:12Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 26:21Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910 Wide awake,
- 26:26Wide awake. Wide awake.
