Sam: Hey, welcome to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're digging into Advice Not Given by Mark Epstein. It's this fascinating book that takes the Buddha's Eightfold Path and reframes it as a psychological framework for understanding why we suffer. Sophie, I have to ask, what was your first reaction when you realized this wasn't going to be a typical self-help book?
• 0:25
Sophie: Hey there Sam. Honestly, my first thought was relief. Epstein is a psychiatrist who's spent decades blending Buddhist wisdom with Western therapy, and he's not interested in giving us another five-step plan to fix ourselves. The whole premise is that our relentless attempts to manage our experience are actually what's causing the deepest suffering. It's such a counterintuitive starting point for a book about wellbeing.
• 0:52
Sam: Right, and the title itself is a clue. Advice Not Given. It's almost like he's saying the best guidance isn't a set of instructions you follow. It's more like a shift in how you see things.
• 1:04
Sophie: Exactly. And the first step of the Eightfold Path, Right View, is all about that shift. It's not about having the correct opinions. It's about seeing clearly that the self we're so busy protecting isn't actually a fixed, solid thing. It's more like a process, a constantly shifting collection of thoughts and feelings and sensations.
• 1:26
Sam: That's the part that really got me. I mean, we walk around feeling like we're this stable entity, right? But Epstein says if you look closely, there's no permanent core behind all those thoughts. And that's not a depressing conclusion. It's actually liberating.
• 1:41
Sophie: Yeah, because when you stop trying to prop up this fictional self, you become available to life as it actually is. He shares stories from his own life, like when he was a young man drawn to Buddhism while studying medicine, and also from his patients. You start to see how much energy we spend fortifying an illusion.
• 2:01
Sam: So then we get to Right Intention, which is the second step. And here he talks about the three poisons. Greed, hatred, and delusion. I love how he names them.
• 2:12
Sophie: Right. And those poisons fuel so much of what we do. We reach for pleasure and push away pain. We grasp at what we want and resist what we don't want. But Epstein points out that this strategy is doomed because the world doesn't conform to our desires. So Right Intention is about cultivating a different motivation, one rooted in kindness and compassion and renunciation.
• 2:38
Sam: Renunciation sounds so grim, though. Like you're giving up everything you love. But he reframes it as just letting go of our attachments because we see that holding on causes suffering. That's not deprivation. That's freedom.
• 2:52
Sophie: Exactly. And he shares these beautiful stories of patients who learned to release their grip on old grievances or impossible expectations. In each case, letting go didn't lead to loss. It led to a greater sense of freedom.
• 3:08
Sam: Then we get to Right Speech, which might be the most immediately practical part of the book. I actually pushed back on this a little when I first read it, because I thought, okay, so I just have to be nice all the time? But it's deeper than that.
• 3:22
Sophie: Yeah, it's not about being brutally honest or saying everything that comes to mind. It's about being aware of the impact of your words. Epstein says our speech is often a weapon or a shield. We use words to manipulate or defend or impress. Right Speech is about speaking in ways that are truthful and helpful and connect rather than separate.
• 3:45
Sam: He tells this story about his own father, who struggled to express love directly. And through their conversations, Epstein came to see that even imperfect speech, when it's offered with genuine intention, can be a form of healing. That really stuck with me.
• 4:02
Sophie: Right, and that flows into Right Action. Which is about behaving in ways that don't cause harm. The traditional precepts are not killing, not stealing, not lying, not engaging in sexual misconduct, and not intoxicating the mind. But Epstein shows how these apply to modern life, like a lawyer who struggled with the pressure to be aggressive in the courtroom.
• 4:25
Sam: Right Action isn't about being perfect. It's about being honest about your imperfections and committed to reducing harm wherever you can. I love that. It's so much more realistic than a list of rules.
• 4:38
Sophie: Then there's Right Livelihood, which is about how we spend our time and energy. Our work isn't just a way to make money. It's a reflection of our values. He tells a story about a businessman who felt empty despite his success, and through therapy and meditation, he started to see that his drive for achievement was a way of avoiding his own vulnerability.
• 5:00
Sam: And as he connected more authentically with people, his work became less about winning and more about contributing. That's such a powerful shift.
• 5:10
Sophie: It really is. Then we get to Right Effort, which sounds like a call to try harder, but Epstein offers a more nuanced take. It's about finding the middle way between indulgence and repression. Not forcing yourself to be calm, but gently and persistently returning to awareness.
• 5:28
Sam: He uses the analogy of a musician practicing scales or an athlete training. It's sustained, patient, and kind. That's the quality of effort that's neither too tight nor too loose.
• 5:40
Sophie: Exactly. And then Right Mindfulness, which is probably the most familiar step because of how popular mindfulness has become in the West. But Epstein cautions against reducing it to a stress-reduction technique. True mindfulness isn't about relaxing or feeling better. It's about seeing clearly, even when what you see is uncomfortable.
• 6:01
Sam: He describes a woman with chronic anxiety who learned to observe her anxious thoughts without being consumed by them. And a man with a history of trauma who began to feel safe enough to explore his memories. Mindfulness isn't a cure, but it's a way of relating to your experience that opens up new possibilities.
• 6:23
Sophie: And then the final step, Right Concentration, which is the least discussed in popular Buddhism but Epstein argues is essential. It's about developing the ability to focus the mind in a sustained way. Through meditation, we train the mind to be stable and clear, and that stability allows us to see through the illusions of the ego.
• 6:44
Sam: He's honest about his own struggles with meditation, the restlessness and boredom. But he also describes these moments of profound peace when the mind settles. It's not about escaping the world. It's about being fully present in it.
• 7:00
Sophie: One of the most powerful themes in the book is how therapy and meditation complement each other. Therapy helps us understand the stories we tell about ourselves, the wounds from our past, the patterns that keep us stuck. Meditation helps us see through the stories altogether, to touch a place of awareness that isn't defined by our personal history.
• 7:22
Sam: And he doesn't dismiss therapy at all. He knows many patients need to work through trauma before they can sit quietly with their minds. But therapy alone can become an endless process of analyzing the self without ever transcending it.
• 7:38
Sophie: Right. And another key theme is the role of the body. Epstein emphasizes that the Buddha's teachings aren't just about the mind. They're about the whole person. Our bodies carry the memory of our experiences and the tension of our unprocessed emotions. Meditation is a way of inhabiting the body more fully, feeling the breath and the sensations.
• 8:01
Sam: He also addresses suffering directly. Buddhism begins with the recognition that life is marked by suffering, but that's not pessimistic. It's realistic. When we stop running from our pain, we discover it's not as solid as we thought. It's a passing experience, like a cloud in the sky.
• 8:20
Sophie: And when we're no longer consumed by our own pain, we become more available to the pain of others. Compassion arises naturally when we see that everyone is struggling with the same basic predicament.
• 8:33
Sam: Epstein is also really insightful about how our culture reinforces the patterns that cause suffering. We're taught to value achievement and productivity and positivity. We're told happiness is something we can attain if we work hard enough. But that relentless pursuit often makes us miserable.
• 8:53
Sophie: Instead of chasing happiness, he suggests we can learn to be content with what is. Not settling for less, but opening to the fullness of our experience, including the difficult parts. When we stop trying to control everything, we find that life is already complete.
• 9:11
Sam: The title Advice Not Given really comes together when you understand that the Buddha's path isn't about following instructions from an external authority. It's about discovering your own wisdom. Epstein writes that the best therapists don't give advice. They create the conditions for patients to find their own answers.
• 9:29
Sophie: And the eight steps aren't a checklist. They're a description of how a wise person naturally lives. When you see clearly, your intentions shift. When your intentions are clear, your speech and actions follow. When you live with integrity, your work becomes meaningful. The path isn't something you follow. It's something you become.
• 9:52
Sam: That's beautiful. So the one thing I'm taking away from this is that freedom isn't about getting what I want. It's about relaxing the grip of wanting itself. That feels like something I can actually practice, not just read about.
