- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name is Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud
- 0:04Speaker 1: or the Order Kerni Whaltbury and a waddery woman. And
- 0:08Speaker 1: before we get started on She's on the Money podcast,
- 0:11Speaker 1: I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the
- 0:13Speaker 1: land of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it. She's on the Money. She's on
- 0:36Speaker 2: the Money. Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the podcast that makes personal finance fun, especially on Fridays.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It's our favorite day of the week because we get
- 1:05Speaker 2: the team together and we get to celebrate you, our
- 1:08Speaker 2: incredible She's on the Money community. Miss Jesse Ricci is
- 1:11Speaker 2: here as always to share our favorite money wins from
- 1:14Speaker 2: the week that was. Beck is here to share her
- 1:16Speaker 2: favorite broke tips, and we're going to be helping to
- 1:18Speaker 2: answer money dilemma, which this week is all about protecting
- 1:21Speaker 2: yourself from scams, which is very timely as I myself
- 1:26Speaker 2: almost fell victim to a scam recently and something that
- 1:29Speaker 2: you slid into our teams about. We're chatting about navigating
- 1:33Speaker 2: an extended unemployment break, which can be really hard and
- 1:36Speaker 2: often unforeseen. So I feel like this episode is going
- 1:39Speaker 2: to be really fun and very diverse, from like getting
- 1:42Speaker 2: scammed to being unemployed, to talking about money wins and
- 1:45Speaker 2: confessions I broke tea. I just feel like there's going
- 1:47Speaker 2: to be a lot of juicy stuff in this week.
- 1:50Speaker 2: But before we get there, my friends, jess Beck, how
- 1:54Speaker 2: are your weeks?
- 1:54Speaker 3: Go?
- 1:55Speaker 2: First? Please? My week's been good. What have I been doing?
- 1:58Speaker 3: Not much planning for I'm throwing outdoor movie night at
- 2:01Speaker 3: my house.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Oh my god, I've seen it on TikTok on my
- 2:04Speaker 2: tax treat to myself.
- 2:05Speaker 3: I think I told the potty last year was I
- 2:07Speaker 3: bought a projector and I was like, oh, the weather
- 2:09Speaker 3: is so nice, like it would be really fun. And
- 2:10Speaker 3: then I found this like vintage looking popcorn machine on
- 2:13Speaker 3: Facebook marketplace for twenty dollars, I bought.
- 2:15Speaker 2: A proper like it looks like one of those it's
- 2:17Speaker 2: like mini but like one of the ones that the
- 2:19Speaker 2: movies had. That's cool.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You know how I feel about movie popcorn an investment,
- 2:25Speaker 3: but yeah, I want to make it like a whole
- 2:26Speaker 3: big thing, like all themed and cut. See I want
- 2:28Speaker 3: to throw like a again. I feel like I've told
- 2:30Speaker 3: you guys this by last year.
- 2:32Speaker 2: One of my goals.
- 2:32Speaker 3: You don't even like events or themes at all. I
- 2:36Speaker 3: want to throw a themed dinner every month. Last year
- 2:38Speaker 3: and I did not throw a single one good shirt.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So I carried it over to this year.
- 2:44Speaker 2: That's what I thought.
- 2:45Speaker 3: So I'm starting with like Dina movie night, but that
- 2:48Speaker 3: is so what.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Else is on the menu? We have to know? So
- 2:51Speaker 2: we've got the popcorn. Well, this is what I'm trying
- 2:52Speaker 2: to figure out.
- 2:53Speaker 3: So I wanted to do like vintage diners feel, so
- 2:55Speaker 3: I went hot dogs fries, but I'm still trying to think.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Of what else.
- 3:01Speaker 4: This is actually a really weird time, just because literally
- 3:03Speaker 4: tomorrow I'm having a movie thing as well, but with
- 3:06Speaker 4: pizza buffet ice cream, like you know how they have
- 3:09Speaker 4: the jelly, the brownies, the sprinkles.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna do all that. That's so fun. So maybe
- 3:15Speaker 2: could like you need to get chop tops. I imagine, yes,
- 3:19Speaker 2: I think a banana split, like you have to have
- 3:22Speaker 2: a just feel like yeah, but like Dina vibes, like
- 3:27Speaker 2: a banana split like station so you can like decorate
- 3:30Speaker 2: your own. Yes, yes, yes, the station would be I
- 3:32Speaker 2: don't even think that would be expensive because you'd like
- 3:34Speaker 2: to get some bananas, some tuber Neapolitan ice cream, and
- 3:38Speaker 2: then like some sprinkles and chips cream or the spray
- 3:42Speaker 2: whipped cream. It has to be the spray definitely. Now,
- 3:45Speaker 2: I don't know what your budgets looking you like, but
- 3:46Speaker 2: you get a big.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Red drape outside something to hang it on.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Is the annoying thing? Really good idea that's cute? That
- 3:54Speaker 2: was very cute. Milkshakes like spiders Friday milkshakes. You could
- 4:01Speaker 2: do like, oh my gosh, could you find I'm just
- 4:04Speaker 2: going to take this to the next level. Could you
- 4:05Speaker 2: find on Amazon, like the old vintage milkshake glasses. I
- 4:09Speaker 2: have a few.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Stress Yeah, I have red and white striped straws. Yeah,
- 4:14Speaker 3: I bought a little you know what what's gonna sayd
- 4:17Speaker 3: like that? I promise, I promise you guys. Not the
- 4:19Speaker 3: reject shop. You know we always talk about the regis
- 4:21Speaker 3: such good stuff they had, Yeah, they had little like
- 4:25Speaker 3: you know, the plastic baskets that they put food in
- 4:27Speaker 3: a diners and stuff.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Like a little red Yes, oh my gosh, yeah, I
- 4:31Speaker 2: think you should.
- 4:32Speaker 4: When everyone walks in, give people their ticket and then
- 4:35Speaker 4: be like okay, can you line back up, and then
- 4:37Speaker 4: be like and you look at it, you rip it and.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Say number seven down the hall or whatever. I think
- 4:42Speaker 2: you should fully be. You need a commit the whole.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Day and everyone's like, oh, just like it's funny, but stuff.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Now you're like no, You're gonna like yeah with your
- 4:52Speaker 4: flashlight and you're gonna be looking at you know, don't
- 4:56Speaker 4: be only friind make sure no one brings in their
- 4:57Speaker 4: own snacks.
- 4:58Speaker 2: You're gonna be very very strict. Maraschino cherries to go
- 5:01Speaker 2: on top of the banana. Oh yes I did. And
- 5:04Speaker 2: those wafer straws. Yeah, like the wafer I love a Corinthian.
- 5:13Speaker 2: They actually only available at Christmas time. I hope you
- 5:17Speaker 2: get usually, I think because I have been known to
- 5:20Speaker 2: buy and eat a whole tup by myself. Also, you
- 5:24Speaker 2: don't have a cost Co membership, but I know that
- 5:26Speaker 2: your friend does. And I'm assuming your friend's going to
- 5:29Speaker 2: be invited to the party, so you could ask to
- 5:30Speaker 2: borrow it. They have many corn dogs at a cost cot,
- 5:36Speaker 2: so you could like do the corn dog thing. And
- 5:37Speaker 2: I feel like that's got Imagine a little corn dog
- 5:40Speaker 2: and a little like tub of sauce in one of
- 5:43Speaker 2: your little baskets. You you know what. I had one
- 5:47Speaker 2: and it broke. It's very sad. What are you doing
- 5:50Speaker 2: with a bay Marie.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I led it to a friend that came back and
- 5:53Speaker 3: then I put in my cupboard for months and then
- 5:54Speaker 3: I it just disused or something and it just doesn't work.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I feel like that's it. Also, could you turn it
- 5:59Speaker 2: into a sleepover. Oh, that would be quite cute because
- 6:02Speaker 2: you could have a sleep and then in the morning
- 6:03Speaker 2: you could do like a diner breakfast, pancakes and stuff.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Excited really racking up this the course of this, Yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 2: one hundred percent. But like when Jess commits to a theme,
- 6:15Speaker 2: Es commits to a theme, Yeah, you'd be a made
- 6:17Speaker 2: So you can buy a secondhand to hats hats you
- 6:19Speaker 2: need the little paper diner house. Oh my god, I'm
- 6:22Speaker 2: sure you could like fold them out of some newspaper paper. Yeah,
- 6:26Speaker 2: but like anyway, we'll move on. Oh yeah, it turns
- 6:29Speaker 2: out just is having better week than everybody. So I'm sorry,
- 6:31Speaker 2: what movie you watching that? I haven't picked the movie
- 6:34Speaker 2: that Smile too. If you haven't watch Smiled one, then
- 6:36Speaker 2: more Smile one.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Sorry, continue to know these are but I'll put them consideration.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I'm very excited. How's your week being? Has it been
- 6:44Speaker 2: as good as Corinthians? I don't like, I don't think
- 6:47Speaker 2: there's anything as good ass and I'll bring some in soon.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I'm going to find.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Them, please, I'm obsessed with Corinthians and there really is
- 6:54Speaker 4: like a withdrawal period after Christmas. I'm glad that they
- 6:58Speaker 4: to know that they sell them b.
- 6:59Speaker 3: W that anyway.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I don't know if this really not miss spreading innovation.
- 7:05Speaker 2: It's very hard months. That's a podcast.
- 7:08Speaker 4: It's been really good oding with a friend, but we
- 7:09Speaker 4: both came from sharehouses and so we don't have any
- 7:12Speaker 4: furniture literally nothing, Like we're like like buying oven trays and.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Cutlery to buy.
- 7:17Speaker 4: It. It does add up, but just these things and
- 7:19Speaker 4: I'm like, I've never thought to buy so I'm like,
- 7:21Speaker 4: where do you even get them from?
- 7:23Speaker 2: Like I actually don't know where to buy an oven? Trade?
- 7:25Speaker 2: Like not all camar?
- 7:27Speaker 4: Do you need them to be like because I'm thinking
- 7:29Speaker 4: they need to be pre rusted, but they just pre rusted.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Do you know what? You could probably go to an
- 7:34Speaker 2: op shop and find a lot of these things. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 2: that's why I feel like people often donate their surplus,
- 7:40Speaker 2: so it's not even like, oh, this one's broken off
- 7:43Speaker 2: get rid of, Like I feel like there's lots of
- 7:44Speaker 2: kitchen stuff. Yeah, I shop, but then also I found
- 7:49Speaker 2: that sometimes op shops are getting a bit expensive, so
- 7:52Speaker 2: like they maybe they are. Yeah, like maybe have a
- 7:54Speaker 2: look at the prices and stuff that came up before
- 7:57Speaker 2: you go in to the op shop, because you might go, oh,
- 8:00Speaker 2: four bucks for a like ove and trade, that's a
- 8:02Speaker 2: really good deal, Like they must be like fifty or
- 8:05Speaker 2: something in your head, like maybe you just don't know
- 8:07Speaker 2: how to price it, and then they're actually like three
- 8:09Speaker 2: dollars that came out or something. You would be a
- 8:10Speaker 2: pretty annoyed human being. Oh my god. Totally. I'm really noticed.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Even with Marketplace, I'm noticing that people are like twenty
- 8:16Speaker 2: dollars for this side table, and then I like, go
- 8:17Speaker 2: on k Marts, is fifty dollars a kmart for the
- 8:20Speaker 2: same exact ones, you know? But anyway, so it's been vigilance.
- 8:25Speaker 2: You could give it slammed, vigilate, subtle foreshadowing.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I think we need to hear a bit more about
- 8:31Speaker 3: this scam that you almost fell victim to.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I hit the jackpot, I did, so I was telling
- 8:37Speaker 2: you off air about how obviously I am a finance
- 8:41Speaker 2: crime girlie, Like I love crime. I have, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 2: pipe dream one day to have my own like crime podcast.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Who knows if that'll ever happen, Like that's just a
- 8:51Speaker 2: pipe dream. As I said, I listen to true crime everything,
- 8:55Speaker 2: So like you best believe your girl knows a fair
- 8:57Speaker 2: bit about like skimming devices and how to scare people,
- 9:00Speaker 2: because like I fall onto that side of TikTok, and
- 9:03Speaker 2: if I'm not on that side of TikTok, I'm probably
- 9:04Speaker 2: watching a documentary on it. Like I don't know what
- 9:07Speaker 2: is wrong with me or what type of trauma I
- 9:10Speaker 2: went through to make me so obsessed with this type
- 9:12Speaker 2: of content. So like in the back of my head
- 9:15Speaker 2: every time I go to get cash out, I just
- 9:17Speaker 2: like have this dream that maybe one day I'll like
- 9:20Speaker 2: spot as skimming device or something I did. I did.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I did find a skimming device and I ripped it
- 9:27Speaker 2: off the ATM and I got the cops involved. It
- 9:30Speaker 2: sounds very dramatic.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I know.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Okay, so what like? So you went? So we went
- 9:35Speaker 2: to the ATM. One of my most asked questions on
- 9:38Speaker 2: Instagram when I said I found this was like, v
- 9:40Speaker 2: why are you getting cash out? I was gonna say, Also,
- 9:43Speaker 2: what do you buy a vape or something? Whose business
- 9:45Speaker 2: is that? No? I wasn't buying a vape. Everybody who
- 9:49Speaker 2: lives where I live knows that the good Fish and
- 9:52Speaker 2: Chip Shop is run by Peter, who doesn't take card.
- 9:56Speaker 2: He only does cash. Just kidding. Cash is King and
- 9:59Speaker 2: Peter live love laugh. I will pay cash, and I
- 10:02Speaker 2: will not question your business ethics because you do provide
- 10:06Speaker 2: the good chippies. Like in anyone who gives you a
- 10:09Speaker 2: good chippy.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Do what ever they say, literally whatever they say exactly
- 10:13Speaker 4: like you.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Know who we love the most at the pub, the
- 10:16Speaker 2: person who buys the chippies for the table. Yes, so true.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So anyone with a good chippiees no question, no questions,
- 10:23Speaker 2: no questions. That's why I was getting cash out. For
- 10:25Speaker 2: those of you who are pervy. But I'm at the ATM,
- 10:27Speaker 2: I'm in my bikini, I'm looking at the ATM suspiciously,
- 10:31Speaker 2: as they always do, because I kind of want to
- 10:33Speaker 2: manifest finding a scamming device because it would be peak
- 10:37Speaker 2: life for me. And the plastic around the keypad looks suspicious.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It was a little bit raised, and I was like,
- 10:43Speaker 2: that doesn't look right, Maybe this is a crap ATM.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And then I like look upside down and I'm like, oh,
- 10:50Speaker 2: that light looks a little bit like not the plastic
- 10:53Speaker 2: around the light didn't look fitted, and I was like,
- 10:56Speaker 2: what the hell? And there was enough room in the
- 10:58Speaker 2: light well air, you know, the light that shines onto
- 11:01Speaker 2: the keypad. Yeah, to stick my finger probably a bad idea,
- 11:04Speaker 2: could have been full of spiders. I don't think Jessica
- 11:08Speaker 2: would have done it. I think she would have just
- 11:09Speaker 2: been like, oh no, absolutely not. But I did. I
- 11:11Speaker 2: chucked my finger in there and realized that it was
- 11:14Speaker 2: like a little bit loose, like you know when you
- 11:16Speaker 2: pull on something and it's like got double sided sticky
- 11:18Speaker 2: tape on the other side, so you know it could
- 11:20Speaker 2: quote easily come off, but you're not feeling like it's
- 11:25Speaker 2: clipped in or anything. You're like getting that like resistance
- 11:28Speaker 2: that's like this would come off with a little bit
- 11:30Speaker 2: of force. Yeah, So I'm like, I could go to
- 11:33Speaker 2: jail for like vandalizing this ATM, or I could achieve
- 11:39Speaker 2: a life goal. Yes, so obviously I pulled it off.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And I pulled it off, and the split second after
- 11:45Speaker 2: it like actually like ripped off, I was like, oh
- 11:48Speaker 2: my god, I've actually broken the ATMIC, like the panic
- 11:52Speaker 2: of being like, oh, that actually worked, like I didn't
- 11:55Speaker 2: mean that. And then I flipped it around and was like,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I was right, it was a skimming device, but it's
- 12:01Speaker 2: no attached to the plastic. Well, it just looked suspicious
- 12:04Speaker 2: back And the more that I stared at it, the
- 12:06Speaker 2: more I realized it was not actually like it was
- 12:08Speaker 2: sticking a little bit up and like you wouldn't have
- 12:10Speaker 2: noticed because it had been custom molded for this ATM machine.
- 12:14Speaker 2: But anyway, pull it off and I flip it upside
- 12:16Speaker 2: down to look at this piece of giant plastic that
- 12:18Speaker 2: I've pulled off. There's Instagram pictures all over my Instagram
- 12:21Speaker 2: of this if you want to see. I flip it
- 12:24Speaker 2: over and there's two phone batteries hot glued to the
- 12:28Speaker 2: back of this plastic piece. There's some wires, an SD card,
- 12:32Speaker 2: and some other wires that went to a hidden camera,
- 12:34Speaker 2: and I was like, what the heck. I didn't know
- 12:37Speaker 2: what to do. Obviously, I ended up working out what
- 12:40Speaker 2: to do, pulled it off, took a whole heap of
- 12:41Speaker 2: videos of it. At the start, I wasn't even taking
- 12:43Speaker 2: videos to post on social media. I was taking videos
- 12:46Speaker 2: because I was like, I probably should give this to
- 12:49Speaker 2: the police, and I probably should explain how I found
- 12:51Speaker 2: it and why I was attempting to vandalize an ATM machine,
- 12:55Speaker 2: because what are you going to do walk into the
- 12:56Speaker 2: cop shop and be like, hey, policeman, So I actually
- 13:00Speaker 2: found something that's helpful for you, but it was because
- 13:02Speaker 2: I was vandalizing something I was trying to sell somebody. Yeah, like,
- 13:05Speaker 2: but that's not what I was doing anyway. So found
- 13:07Speaker 2: that got the police involved. Turns out it is obviously
- 13:10Speaker 2: very serious crime. They're very interested in it because these
- 13:14Speaker 2: things don't come up as often as I thought they
- 13:16Speaker 2: might have. Just you were saying that one was in
- 13:19Speaker 2: your area recently, which is literally like.
- 13:21Speaker 3: The week before, I got posted in like a local
- 13:23Speaker 3: you know, Facebook community group, someone saying they'd found one
- 13:26Speaker 3: in like the main strip near me, which I think
- 13:29Speaker 3: I think it was from memory, out near a supermarket.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Like it wasn't out the front of a bank.
- 13:34Speaker 2: It was right, No, so ours was out the front
- 13:36Speaker 2: of a supermarket as well. And it was a standalone ATM,
- 13:39Speaker 2: not run by one of the banks. Yeah, so like
- 13:41Speaker 2: it wasn't bank affiliated. It was like one of those
- 13:44Speaker 2: like quick ETM things that charge you exorbitant fees to
- 13:47Speaker 2: use it, but it's in a very convenient location. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:50Speaker 2: which is so interesting.
- 13:51Speaker 3: It's scary because I agree, I feel like you heard
- 13:54Speaker 3: a lot about them, but like I've never I've never
- 13:56Speaker 3: known anybody or anyone near me or anything to find one,
- 13:59Speaker 3: and then all one in me and then you find one,
- 14:01Speaker 3: and I'm.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Like, whoa, this is crazy. Yeah, because I think a
- 14:04Speaker 2: lot of us, like we talk about, you know, how
- 14:06Speaker 2: to protect yourself if you're traveling overseas, like we always say,
- 14:08Speaker 2: don't use your bank card, like use your travel card
- 14:11Speaker 2: and only transfer money to that card because skimming is
- 14:13Speaker 2: so popular internationally, you just don't think it would happen
- 14:17Speaker 2: on your own doorstep. And like anyway, that was really
- 14:20Speaker 2: spicy and good to find. And I mean if you
- 14:22Speaker 2: find something on an ATM that looks suspicious. At the
- 14:26Speaker 2: end of a day, a ATM has been built to
- 14:29Speaker 2: not be broken into. Like it's there, it's full of
- 14:32Speaker 2: thousands of dollars. I believe on average an ATM holds
- 14:35Speaker 2: about fifteen thousand dollars in rash because obviously every day
- 14:39Speaker 2: people come and get fifty dollars out, one hundred dollars out,
- 14:41Speaker 2: maybe like five hundred bucks to pay someone. Like, lots
- 14:44Speaker 2: of money goes through an ATM on a daily basis,
- 14:46Speaker 2: So like, you don't want to make it easy to
- 14:48Speaker 2: break into. So if it looks like it could come
- 14:50Speaker 2: off an ATM, it's usually a bit of a sign
- 14:52Speaker 2: that maybe it shouldn't be there. If the lights look
- 14:54Speaker 2: a little bit off, if the keypad looks a little
- 14:57Speaker 2: bit off, just be vigilant. There's lots of tiktoks you
- 15:00Speaker 2: can look up, have a look at. But yeah, I
- 15:03Speaker 2: would be vigilant. Yeah, this is a silly question.
- 15:06Speaker 4: But when you were explaining that, I was like, I wonder,
- 15:09Speaker 4: I gather that they have the card details from the
- 15:11Speaker 4: skimming and then do they make purchases or do they
- 15:14Speaker 4: take money out somehow of that.
- 15:15Speaker 2: So just a backtrack, because I just realized I hadn't
- 15:18Speaker 2: explained it properly, so a skimming device could could be
- 15:22Speaker 2: lots of different things. The one I found was a
- 15:25Speaker 2: two part so it was the piece of plastic that
- 15:28Speaker 2: I found that I pulled off the keypad that had
- 15:31Speaker 2: a hidden camera in it that recorded you putting your
- 15:34Speaker 2: pin code in to the machine. Okay, the other piece
- 15:37Speaker 2: of plastic I was unable to remove. I could see it.
- 15:40Speaker 2: I took videos of it. I showed the cops did
- 15:42Speaker 2: all of that, and it has since been removed, So
- 15:44Speaker 2: don't stress. But they would have quote skimmed your credit
- 15:47Speaker 2: card details as you went in and went out. They
- 15:50Speaker 2: like capture that magnetic information from the magnetic strip on
- 15:53Speaker 2: the back of your ATM card. They then take blank
- 15:57Speaker 2: ATM cards and copy over your ATM card to a
- 16:02Speaker 2: blank card. They then time match the time that you
- 16:05Speaker 2: put your pin code in and watch the video and
- 16:08Speaker 2: go oh Beck's pink codes one, two, three, four. They
- 16:10Speaker 2: take the blank version of your card to an ATM,
- 16:13Speaker 2: pop it in, put your pin code in, and withdraw
- 16:15Speaker 2: all your cash. Oh, which is why.
- 16:18Speaker 3: And I didn't even realize I still did this until
- 16:20Speaker 3: you post about it. But my mum always do and
- 16:23Speaker 3: just to have it I picked up, but like having
- 16:24Speaker 3: your wallet over like or your hand or something when
- 16:27Speaker 3: you type in an ATM. It's literally it's like a
- 16:30Speaker 3: reflex for me because it's just something my mum always in.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I'm sure she probably told me to do it, but
- 16:34Speaker 3: I didn't even think about it until I think you
- 16:36Speaker 3: said on your stories, make sure you cover it with
- 16:37Speaker 3: your hand or whatever. So just a reminder, cover your
- 16:40Speaker 3: hand when you put your pin.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And I mean it does stop everything. Like that's not
- 16:44Speaker 2: going to stop you being completely scammed, but if it's
- 16:46Speaker 2: one of these types of skimmers, they actually need those
- 16:49Speaker 2: two pieces of information and you're kind of stopping them.
- 16:52Speaker 2: And I think because I found one, you guys might go, oh,
- 16:55Speaker 2: you just have to look like they are purpose built
- 16:59Speaker 2: for the machines, purpose built to look like a piece
- 17:02Speaker 2: of the machine that you wouldn't question. I think mine
- 17:05Speaker 2: was lifted. I don't know if I would have seen
- 17:07Speaker 2: it if it was perfectly installed, So you're not necessarily
- 17:11Speaker 2: going to be able to see it. But yeah, there's
- 17:13Speaker 2: a lot of things you could do, so covering your
- 17:15Speaker 2: hand with your pin, making sure that you know someone
- 17:17Speaker 2: can't see you put that number in, making sure you're
- 17:20Speaker 2: not using a dodgy ATM. If there is the option
- 17:22Speaker 2: to get cash out at the supermarket or at the bunnings, like,
- 17:25Speaker 2: do that instead of getting it out at the ATM,
- 17:28Speaker 2: using ATMs that are bank affiliated. So if it's like
- 17:31Speaker 2: on the front of the bank, I can almost guarantee
- 17:35Speaker 2: that that ATM is checked on a daily basis by
- 17:37Speaker 2: the tellers at that bank for skimming devices. But the
- 17:41Speaker 2: standalone ATM down at the local shops where you and
- 17:44Speaker 2: I often frequent beck, no one's there to check it.
- 17:47Speaker 2: It's all on its own. That's why it's usually a
- 17:50Speaker 2: bigger target than the bank one which the bank staff
- 17:56Speaker 2: are checking consistently. Yeah, so I think staying vigilant also
- 17:59Speaker 2: never putting into your ATM the card that has your
- 18:02Speaker 2: life savings on it, like having a separate bank card
- 18:05Speaker 2: that you know, you keep maybe a couple of dollars
- 18:08Speaker 2: on so that when you need to get cash out
- 18:09Speaker 2: you just transfer it over, is gonna essentially safeguard your
- 18:14Speaker 2: life savings. And it doesn't mean that you absolutely have
- 18:18Speaker 2: to do these things and you know, be worried about
- 18:20Speaker 2: absolutely everything, but at the end of the day, could
- 18:23Speaker 2: have protected a lot of people that had their financial
- 18:26Speaker 2: information skimmed the day that I found that device, and
- 18:29Speaker 2: from what the cops said, they've obviously reviewed all of that,
- 18:32Speaker 2: and I was like, I've been a little bit pervy,
- 18:34Speaker 2: and thankfully they've been forgiving and like kept me in
- 18:37Speaker 2: the loop. About two hundred people went to that ATM
- 18:40Speaker 2: on the day that I found it. That's crazy, isn't
- 18:43Speaker 2: that insane? Yeah? And like right as I had to
- 18:46Speaker 2: like queue up to use the ATM, there was like
- 18:48Speaker 2: an older guy who got his cash out and went inside.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Not the wiser, stop my heart, But he didn't get scammed.
- 18:54Speaker 2: He's all good. But like he like got his cash
- 18:56Speaker 2: out and went inside, he did not have any clue
- 19:00Speaker 2: that someone had literally just stolen his bank information. Did
- 19:03Speaker 2: you find him? No, not the do. I didn't need
- 19:05Speaker 2: to find him because I pulled out the skimmer and
- 19:07Speaker 2: it had the SD card and all the information, and
- 19:09Speaker 2: I gave it to the cops. So now there's crims.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Like the criminals aren't going to get that old man's details,
- 19:14Speaker 2: and like they're not going to be able to take
- 19:16Speaker 2: his money out. But like had I not found that,
- 19:18Speaker 2: And later that evening they had returned to the ATM
- 19:21Speaker 2: taking their skimmer device, taken it home. They absolutely would
- 19:24Speaker 2: have taken his cash. Y. Isn't that insane?
- 19:27Speaker 1: I know?
- 19:28Speaker 2: It actually makes me so and that's I guess why
- 19:30Speaker 2: I've been posting about it. It makes me so angry. How
- 19:33Speaker 2: does anyone do that makes me feel like sickly to
- 19:35Speaker 2: be in the middle of a class of living crisis,
- 19:37Speaker 2: And like, you know, I dodn't want to get too
- 19:39Speaker 2: deep into it, but I have not been sleeping over this,
- 19:41Speaker 2: not because I'm stressed about I just can't stop thinking
- 19:44Speaker 2: about it. Even the location that it was in, like,
- 19:48Speaker 2: wasn't in a high net wealth suburb, Like lots of
- 19:51Speaker 2: people that go to the ATM where we were are
- 19:53Speaker 2: just average mums and dads. There's a lot of people
- 19:56Speaker 2: in that area who are on Centerlink. There are a
- 19:58Speaker 2: lot of people in that area who would be living
- 20:02Speaker 2: paycheck to paycheck, and I'm just like they would have
- 20:05Speaker 2: been absolutely dreamed. Like it makes me so angry, Like
- 20:10Speaker 2: and I was lucky. I was just getting some fish
- 20:12Speaker 2: and chips cash out.
- 20:13Speaker 3: But the idea be vigilant everybody, Yes, as aware as
- 20:19Speaker 3: you can. It's not to put it on people, but
- 20:22Speaker 3: when there's horrible people out there, Like, we've got to
- 20:24Speaker 3: do the best we can, right.
- 20:25Speaker 2: And if you're suspicious on it, there's often numbers on
- 20:28Speaker 2: the ATM that you can call, so you could call
- 20:30Speaker 2: the company and like, see something, say something. Yeah, Like
- 20:35Speaker 2: I'd prefer you to have called someone and wasted their
- 20:37Speaker 2: time then finding out a Facebook group like jes did.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Oh there was a skimmer on this ATM. Like if
- 20:44Speaker 2: you see something, say something, even if you're just suspicious
- 20:47Speaker 2: and you call the company and go, I don't know,
- 20:48Speaker 2: but there's something real suss about your ATM machine at
- 20:51Speaker 2: the moment. Not a professional, I'm a nurse, but if
- 20:54Speaker 2: you could just check, that would be great. They're probably
- 20:56Speaker 2: going to thank you because ultimately that's their responsibility and
- 21:00Speaker 2: a lot of the time, if you have been scammed,
- 21:02Speaker 2: the ATM company might have to pay you back. Yes, true, true. Anyway,
- 21:06Speaker 2: let's move on because I can talk about scams literally,
- 21:08Speaker 2: and I'm going to do a whole episode on it soon.
- 21:10Speaker 2: I think it so excited. Beck is coming is coming.
- 21:13Speaker 2: But before we get there, and we also dive into
- 21:15Speaker 2: our money wins. Do you want a five star review
- 21:18Speaker 2: from the community please? Okay, this one is from Alexis.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Alexis says five star review, Thank you. Alexis Becksayed is
- 21:29Speaker 2: the unsung hero of this podcast purely for human reasons.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I literally just enjoyed listening to her sprinkling of personal
- 21:42Speaker 2: experiences and stories, where the undertone is always valuing relationships, connection,
- 21:47Speaker 2: enjoying life, bringing light to other people's lives, and resilience.
- 21:51Speaker 2: She makes all of the other finance and money stuff
- 21:53Speaker 2: softer and grounds it in a perspective that feels warm.
- 21:57Speaker 2: I love you all, of course, though that I remember
- 22:00Speaker 2: the day it was not it was only a few
- 22:02Speaker 2: days ago. Just just sent me this.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Because it was just like such a beautiful and I
- 22:07Speaker 4: sent it to every single person I know, and I
- 22:09Speaker 4: was like, I need to find Alexis.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I want I want Alexis to be in my life.
- 22:12Speaker 2: This like completely rolled me in the best way, Like
- 22:16Speaker 2: it isn't it the best, the best thing I've but
- 22:18Speaker 2: like anyone's ever said to me, And do you know
- 22:20Speaker 2: what about me? Somebody has managed to put into words
- 22:24Speaker 2: exactly how I feel about it totally. It's also true,
- 22:28Speaker 2: so true. Oh my gosh, this is actually exactly what
- 22:32Speaker 2: you do.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Oh my god, that is so mind blowingly nice, Like
- 22:37Speaker 4: I feel so so warm right now.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I think the five star reviews just like the beck
- 22:43Speaker 2: fan clubs. So just like, if you haven't left us
- 22:45Speaker 2: a five star review, or you haven't left us, like,
- 22:48Speaker 2: go on to Apple and you can leave a message
- 22:51Speaker 2: for the Bech fan club. I'll get us. I'll make
- 22:53Speaker 2: us a T shirt, a.
- 22:55Speaker 4: T shirt, just even if it's just a Lexus And
- 22:58Speaker 4: and honestly, and this is what I said to friends
- 23:00Speaker 4: when I sent it to them. I was like, if
- 23:02Speaker 4: these are the last words I ever read, that would
- 23:05Speaker 4: be fine, that would be more than enough.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 23:10Speaker 4: If I were to perish, or if I were to
- 23:12Speaker 4: like just be lost in the bush for the rest
- 23:13Speaker 4: of my life, and those are my last.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah, perfect, We're calling Alexis phone. It's about to run
- 23:19Speaker 2: out of boundery. Beck Is calling Alexis.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Alexis is the last ones I'm calling.
- 23:26Speaker 2: I thank you, Alexis. Yes, let's move into the rest
- 23:31Speaker 2: of the community, your money, wins and confessions. If they
- 23:34Speaker 2: got to share this week, all right.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I sure? But sweet one firstly from Jordan, who said
- 23:37Speaker 3: I paid off my Carlogne nine months early. Oh my god,
- 23:41Speaker 3: well done, Jordan, it's actually incredible. Next, I've got money
- 23:45Speaker 3: in from April, who sins you're on the same kind
- 23:47Speaker 3: of vibe as asked with the op shopping, she said,
- 23:48Speaker 3: money and environmental win. I've decided that I'm in at
- 23:52Speaker 3: my gift basket making erar. I'm using fines from Facebook,
- 23:55Speaker 3: Marketplace and the op Shop. There's heaps of unwanted Christmas
- 23:58Speaker 3: presents there at the moment, that's true, and she's collecting
- 24:01Speaker 3: them up and putting them aside and using these gifts.
- 24:03Speaker 3: She put a really cute little photo of anyone's thread.
- 24:06Speaker 3: But she's got baskets that I'm thinking maybe she's also thrusted.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Those are so cute.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Super cuteness, Like there's one there that's obviously for a kid,
- 24:14Speaker 3: because there's book and some toys and things. There's one
- 24:16Speaker 3: with maybe housewarming stuff. I just think it's such a
- 24:19Speaker 3: good idea, give things a second line door. Next, I've
- 24:22Speaker 3: got a money win from Alicia, who said it was
- 24:25Speaker 3: her son's third birthday on the weekend and they decided
- 24:28Speaker 3: to get an ice cream cake. Love Wendyes do ice
- 24:31Speaker 3: cream cakes that start at eighty dollars Peter's original the
- 24:35Speaker 3: classic from Woolies eighty dollars, yeah.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Crazy and ice cream Like, I'm not undervaluing the energy
- 24:42Speaker 2: and effort and stuff. I'm shocked for a lot of money, definitely.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Well, instead, they opted for a Peter's original from Wooli's
- 24:48Speaker 3: fourteen dollars gorgeous. They had to get too because the
- 24:51Speaker 3: grown ups also want an ice cream cake. She said,
- 24:53Speaker 3: it's not really instagram worthy, but it is a money
- 24:55Speaker 3: win that Peter's ice cream cake is my baby type
- 24:59Speaker 3: of cake. It's so I know there's a lot of
- 25:01Speaker 3: debate Fredo or Peter's.
- 25:02Speaker 2: I don't hate the Freddo's, but you got to go.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I like Peter's a little bit more. You got to gog.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I hope your son had a good birthday. I think
- 25:10Speaker 3: that's such a good gift. Next, I've got a money
- 25:13Speaker 3: win from Chelsea who said I wanted to buy a
- 25:16Speaker 3: desk calendar to put in my bills and expenses to
- 25:19Speaker 3: keep track of it over the year, but she ended
- 25:21Speaker 3: up making one during work time on Canva using work supplies.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Great, just starting not your business. Triple money win.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Well done, Chelsea. And then lastly this week I have
- 25:34Speaker 3: one from Sky who said money win our family of
- 25:37Speaker 3: four spent three weeks in a beautiful home in another state, completely.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Free of charge.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Great We looked after altpackers, chickens, a dog, and a
- 25:46Speaker 3: cat during our stay. Housitting is such a great way
- 25:49Speaker 3: to explore new places without the cost of accommodation. The
- 25:52Speaker 3: kids loved it, and the experience was far more engaging
- 25:55Speaker 3: and fun when compared staying in an expensive hotel. And
- 25:58Speaker 3: she put a really cute photo of her I'm assuming
- 26:01Speaker 3: her daughter feeding an out packer.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I'm sorry, that's so cute. It looks like a tiny
- 26:06Speaker 2: baby out package. It looks like a little farm. It
- 26:09Speaker 2: looks like a dream. Sorgeous. Good a little tip for everybody.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I love that so much. That was a good little
- 26:14Speaker 2: wrap up, jess Beck. Yes, it is your turn. What
- 26:18Speaker 2: broke tips you're bring into the table this week? Okay, So,
- 26:22Speaker 2: because I've moved, I'm probably gonna have like a lot.
- 26:24Speaker 2: I'm won't use them all today, but I'm gonna have
- 26:26Speaker 2: a lot of broke tips coming in out of the now.
- 26:30Speaker 4: This one comes from Maddie who says, and this is
- 26:34Speaker 4: very interesting one and one I will be using this year.
- 26:36Speaker 4: So energy companies will often offer sign up credits to
- 26:40Speaker 4: new and moving customers. Every couple of months. Maddie moves
- 26:43Speaker 4: companies based on whoever has the best offer at the time,
- 26:46Speaker 4: and that's like.
- 26:47Speaker 2: You don't have to move. You don't have to actually move.
- 26:49Speaker 4: You just like just do a little shop around and
- 26:51Speaker 4: see if you know, new customers get one thousand dollars
- 26:54Speaker 4: off or something. I'm sure that does not exist, but.
- 26:56Speaker 3: Sometimes they do, Like you get free like I saw one,
- 26:59Speaker 3: so I was like, you get six months free binge
- 27:01Speaker 3: access or something, which is cool if you actually do,
- 27:04Speaker 3: then you don't have to pay for streaming services or
- 27:06Speaker 3: something like that.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Excittly only valuable if you actually needed that item, Yes, exactly,
- 27:11Speaker 2: Like if you're like, oh, sign up because I would
- 27:13Speaker 2: love six months of free binge access, but I've never
- 27:15Speaker 2: actually used binge all night. I don't even want teaving
- 27:18Speaker 2: on there. That is not a good deal.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 27:21Speaker 4: This section comes from Emma, who says I've been using
- 27:24Speaker 4: the Pass app to pay for things at my local
- 27:26Speaker 4: pub that I go to for dinner. You get points
- 27:28Speaker 4: every time you buy something, which ends up being around
- 27:30Speaker 4: ten percent back in credit to use at any of
- 27:33Speaker 4: the venues in the app. We've been saving them up
- 27:35Speaker 4: and now we have enough for free dinner and drinks
- 27:37Speaker 4: for our family of four. They also, I know, how
- 27:39Speaker 4: good is that they also give away bonus credit sometimes
- 27:42Speaker 4: and they have drink specials each month. This month the
- 27:44Speaker 4: beer we drink is discounted through the app, so we're
- 27:47Speaker 4: saving eight dollars on each round for me and my houseband.
- 27:50Speaker 2: That's such a good deal. I've never even money. And
- 27:54Speaker 2: there's over two hundred venues on there around Australia. Apparently incredible,
- 27:57Speaker 2: ka very nice. So that's the wrap from the community.
- 28:01Speaker 2: It's wrap from the community that past that I've never
- 28:03Speaker 2: heard of that I'm going to look it up now
- 28:06Speaker 2: and I brake tip.
- 28:08Speaker 4: I feel like it might always a little bit of
- 28:09Speaker 4: common knowledge. But anyway, so you know, knowledge is not
- 28:12Speaker 4: that common back.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Well, no, that's very true. Like sharing is important. That's
- 28:15Speaker 2: so true.
- 28:16Speaker 4: So recently I've been like on a real video, I
- 28:19Speaker 4: think we're kind of similar, Like you know, when you're like,
- 28:21Speaker 4: as you're saying with the scam thing, like it's all
- 28:22Speaker 4: you're thinking about, Like right now when I'm focused on
- 28:25Speaker 4: something like that is consuming my world right now.
- 28:26Speaker 2: It's because adhd thing diagnosing her she has an official youth.
- 28:35Speaker 2: We're not just making it up. That is so interesting.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I never, I never like put the two together until
- 28:40Speaker 4: it like you know, well, you just you just.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Tell me enough to remind you that most of the
- 28:44Speaker 2: things that you think are part of your personality are
- 28:46Speaker 2: actually ADHD and it becomes quite depressing. It's called hyperfixation. Iye,
- 28:50Speaker 2: a fixation like the current what is it? Tell me
- 28:54Speaker 2: share currently? It's lamps and in particular.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I really like I'm looking for a particular a
- 29:00Speaker 4: vibe and style, So lighting wise, I would I really
- 29:03Speaker 4: want like a dark red or orange room. I know
- 29:06Speaker 4: if you've been a pitt of pippot in Fitzroid's I
- 29:08Speaker 4: had and night time, I see the moment.
- 29:11Speaker 2: I yes, yeah, you can do that with like just
- 29:14Speaker 2: a light globe. Yes.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Well, but this is the thing is that I already
- 29:16Speaker 4: had the light globes and I literally just painted them orange.
- 29:19Speaker 2: And I think you have to be careful to make
- 29:20Speaker 2: sure they eat resistant. Oh yeah, do you know what?
- 29:24Speaker 2: I actually follow it back on Instagram. It is a
- 29:26Speaker 2: very weird concept, but Beck does share everything she gets up.
- 29:30Speaker 4: To a story to me and thank you for remembering.
- 29:33Speaker 4: So that's one way to save money. But no, the
- 29:35Speaker 4: main thing was that I have you guys sort of dentist,
- 29:37Speaker 4: did it? They have those beautiful orange mushroom lamps, and
- 29:39Speaker 4: they also have all these gorgeous lamps that I've always
- 29:42Speaker 4: been like, oh, one day, one day, one day when
- 29:44Speaker 4: I'm rich enough. I'm never rich enough, and so this
- 29:46Speaker 4: time I was like, I've got a new house me
- 29:48Speaker 4: or buy myself something nice beautiful. Denis did a lamp
- 29:51Speaker 4: that looked exactly like what I wanted, but I didn't
- 29:53Speaker 4: have one hundred fet dollars to spend what that is
- 29:55Speaker 4: expensive for a lamp exactly, So I went to kmart
- 29:58Speaker 4: and got like a very similar look base yeah, and
- 30:01Speaker 4: just painted at orange with a three dollars acrylic paint,
- 30:04Speaker 4: so it was thirteen dollars instead of hundred fifty dollars.
- 30:06Speaker 4: You weren't painting the globe, you We're just painting the lamp,
- 30:09Speaker 4: checking the globe. Yeah, but like we don't endorse that.
- 30:11Speaker 4: But we don't endorse that because you must make sure
- 30:13Speaker 4: it's heat resistant paint and something else. Just google it first,
- 30:16Speaker 4: I would say.
- 30:17Speaker 2: But like you did a diy to achieve the same outcome. Yes,
- 30:21Speaker 2: exactly proud of you. Thank you so much. That's so exciting.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 30:24Speaker 4: So I would recommend googling identical or like similarish kind
- 30:28Speaker 4: of things if you if you know something, google reverse
- 30:32Speaker 4: image search.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yes, if you take a screenshot of something and you've
- 30:35Speaker 2: got the Google app on your phone, not just going
- 30:37Speaker 2: to Google. I find they don't have that. But like
- 30:39Speaker 2: the Google app, you can literally search by image and
- 30:42Speaker 2: it will often come up with similar looking things that
- 30:45Speaker 2: might be much chickier exactly exact.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Love that.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Yes, what a good tip. But I feel like you've
- 30:52Speaker 2: you've got a really good round up this week back,
- 30:54Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you much. An Alexis stroke. Your ego
- 30:58Speaker 2: actually still high, like and like my legs are taking
- 31:01Speaker 2: next week. I love this for us. Let's go to
- 31:03Speaker 2: a really quick break on the flip side. I cannot
- 31:05Speaker 2: wait to dive into protecting yourself from scams and also
- 31:09Speaker 2: something you've slid into our DMS about. We're chatting about
- 31:11Speaker 2: navigating an extended unemployment break, so guys don't go anywhere.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 31:22Speaker 3: money dilemma.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma? You just
- 31:27Speaker 2: can't solve the Sheese on the Money team is here
- 31:30Speaker 2: to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 31:33Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 31:36Speaker 2: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 31:39Speaker 2: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 31:41Speaker 2: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 31:44Speaker 2: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 31:49Speaker 5: High Seas on the Money. I have noticed at my
- 31:52Speaker 5: work an increasing number of people, especially younger people, falling
- 31:58Speaker 5: for really not very nice scams. There's been a really
- 32:02Speaker 5: big influx in them, and a lot of them the
- 32:05Speaker 5: bank can't get their money back for different reasons. I
- 32:09Speaker 5: thought it would be awesome if you and the team
- 32:11Speaker 5: could maybe have a chat about scams and what to
- 32:13Speaker 5: kind of look out for, because it seems to be
- 32:16Speaker 5: on the rise and these people are absolutely horrible and
- 32:20Speaker 5: I want them to stop, but I can't. So we've
- 32:22Speaker 5: got to get everyone all that She's on the Money
- 32:24Speaker 5: guys to know what to do. Thank you.
- 32:27Speaker 2: It's really sweet that she thinks we'll know what to do.
- 32:30Speaker 2: It is a good question. This happened like a couple
- 32:32Speaker 2: of weeks ago, where people just kept someone just kept
- 32:34Speaker 2: signing into my Facebook and my Outlook accounts and then stop,
- 32:38Speaker 2: what yes, fifty dollars from you.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I got it back eventually, but I was like, well
- 32:44Speaker 4: that's it for me. I literally can't exist anymore. Tip
- 32:46Speaker 4: Number one for everybody. Two factor authentication on literally everything.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Almost everything these days does have it. You're banking app
- 32:54Speaker 4: to all of your social media, your emails. You might go, well,
- 32:57Speaker 4: how am I getting scammed from my emails? Well, have
- 33:00Speaker 4: to my boyfriend. They go into your emails and then
- 33:02Speaker 4: they find like if you've paid for something, they'll then
- 33:06Speaker 4: contact the company or they'll find a way to reverse it.
- 33:09Speaker 4: Because he had the same thing happened. He had his
- 33:11Speaker 4: identity stolen.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Basically, we've had something happen recently to someone we know
- 33:17Speaker 2: and it has been heartbreaking to watch, like genuinely absolutely cooked,
- 33:24Speaker 2: same thing happened. They somehow must have clicked a phishing
- 33:28Speaker 2: email which allowed them to get into their emails and
- 33:32Speaker 2: see what they were going on, and they started sending
- 33:35Speaker 2: fake emails that felt like real emails because they'd reviewed
- 33:38Speaker 2: the previous stuff, and they ended up transferring a lot
- 33:41Speaker 2: of money to somewhere. It has now been lost to
- 33:45Speaker 2: It's so sad. It's horrific.
- 33:46Speaker 3: So yeah, almost every platform you can think of you
- 33:49Speaker 3: can switch to factor authentication onto.
- 33:52Speaker 2: These days, I think it's bare minimum two factor authentication
- 33:56Speaker 2: or nothing. Yeah, it was so annoying and now it is.
- 34:00Speaker 2: It is, but like, you know what's more annoying not
- 34:02Speaker 2: having the money that you saved. Yeah.
- 34:04Speaker 3: I got an email that's like, oh, someone tried to
- 34:06Speaker 3: look into you account, like if it was you, Bubba,
- 34:08Speaker 3: and I like went to an outlook. You can go
- 34:10Speaker 3: and it will show you every attempted log in.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Yes, and there was thousands, like someone in some country
- 34:17Speaker 2: trying but they can't because it's like my Gmail account. Yeah, crazy,
- 34:22Speaker 2: your outlook. It was my outlook. I'm like, God, it's
- 34:24Speaker 2: so weird.
- 34:24Speaker 3: And it's like they must have some machine or something
- 34:26Speaker 3: because it's like every two minutes for two weeks straight
- 34:29Speaker 3: or something and it's not working because I have the
- 34:31Speaker 3: two factor on. So everyone right now poured the episode.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Go turn it on for everything, even things you think
- 34:36Speaker 3: you shouldn't. Your PayPal, your bank, your Instagram.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Your social media. And we've all had a friend that
- 34:41Speaker 2: starts posting weird cryptocurrency stories scam like and also exactly.
- 34:48Speaker 4: I literally sent my best friend Live every single one
- 34:52Speaker 4: of my card details in one of our chats because
- 34:55Speaker 4: she was like, oh, can I use this for whatever subscription?
- 34:58Speaker 4: And I was like, yeah, try this, trade this, trade this,
- 35:00Speaker 4: then every single detail and then they look into my
- 35:02Speaker 4: Facebook and so maybe that's how the three dollars got someone.
- 35:05Speaker 4: But this is another one that I want to mention
- 35:07Speaker 4: because it kind of scared me. And I might have
- 35:09Speaker 4: mentioned it before, but I keep getting emails in my
- 35:12Speaker 4: junk but one ended up in my regular inbox. I
- 35:15Speaker 4: was like, hey, Rebecca syed date of birth. We have
- 35:19Speaker 4: been watching your Internet history, Yes we have. And then
- 35:22Speaker 4: so I just want everyone to know that's not real
- 35:25Speaker 4: Hunter money.
- 35:27Speaker 2: And and I don't know if someone emailed me and
- 35:31Speaker 2: said Victoria to buy and we have your nudes, will
- 35:33Speaker 2: post them or you have to pay us post them?
- 35:38Speaker 2: Yeah I know, I'm like, post that's fun.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Day.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Yeah, day it looks worse on you. Yeah, Like that's
- 35:44Speaker 2: probably not a very good photo. I've never taken nudes,
- 35:46Speaker 2: and it's because I'm too conservative and scared that something
- 35:49Speaker 2: would happen.
- 35:50Speaker 3: But like, it's sad that we live in a world
- 35:52Speaker 3: where we have to think consider that the front to
- 35:55Speaker 3: prevent other people's evil.
- 35:58Speaker 2: So in terms of resources though, so ScamWatch dot gov,
- 36:01Speaker 2: dot au is a fantastic location. In twenty twenty five,
- 36:05Speaker 2: scams are looking more and more believable, like they're able
- 36:09Speaker 2: to you know, there are even scams that exist where
- 36:12Speaker 2: they might go to your social media, collect all of
- 36:13Speaker 2: your personal information, work out your partner's name, and then
- 36:16Speaker 2: email both of you like it is insane. So we
- 36:19Speaker 2: are always checking any financial institution, so your bank, your
- 36:25Speaker 2: mortgage broker, your solicitor, anyone that is in the financial
- 36:30Speaker 2: services industry, a real estate agent. They will never ever,
- 36:34Speaker 2: ever ever email you asking for bank details. It does
- 36:38Speaker 2: not happen in our industry. So I would never email client.
- 36:41Speaker 2: I don't even care if they're settling on their house
- 36:43Speaker 2: tomorrow and they're not answering their phone. I will never
- 36:46Speaker 2: give a BSB an account number in writing. It just
- 36:50Speaker 2: doesn't happen. We call our clients, we crosscheck it, we
- 36:53Speaker 2: are I can see it on my screen, but I'd
- 36:55Speaker 2: never put it into an email form because I don't
- 36:58Speaker 2: know what's going to happen. I know what my ccurity
- 37:00Speaker 2: looks like, but I don't know what your security looks
- 37:02Speaker 2: like Beck, I'm not going to email it and then
- 37:03Speaker 2: have that be scammed. I'm not going to have that
- 37:06Speaker 2: be intercepted, which can happen. And a scammer put their
- 37:10Speaker 2: bsb inn account number into an email that looks like
- 37:13Speaker 2: it's from me. I would never email you financial information,
- 37:17Speaker 2: and nobody else who's legitimate would either. So if you
- 37:21Speaker 2: see that red flag, do pay attention to your Gmail
- 37:26Speaker 2: notifications as well, so like at the top of your email,
- 37:29Speaker 2: it might have like a little orange banner that says
- 37:31Speaker 2: this looks like a phishing email. Believe them. If your
- 37:35Speaker 2: bank calls you and says, hey, like, there's a weird
- 37:38Speaker 2: transaction Jess, and you go, no, no, no, I was
- 37:41Speaker 2: just transferring money to my friend. Usually that's because they've
- 37:45Speaker 2: picked up that there's something dodgy with the bsb in
- 37:47Speaker 2: account number, but they can't tell you that. They have
- 37:49Speaker 2: to go, oh, did you mean to do that? Like
- 37:51Speaker 2: did you triple check? Because I mean you might be
- 37:53Speaker 2: friends with the scammer? Right, go back check, triple check
- 37:57Speaker 2: with your friend, cancel the transaction. What's the word. Thing
- 38:00Speaker 2: that can happen? You have to go and just redo
- 38:02Speaker 2: the transaction. Oh sorry, bank, like I did actually have
- 38:05Speaker 2: it right the first time. I'd prefer you to do
- 38:07Speaker 2: that than not, like it might be a little bit
- 38:10Speaker 2: more of a waste of time, But at the end
- 38:12Speaker 2: of the day, scamming is definitely on the rise, and
- 38:17Speaker 2: I don't know, just stop. Never give out your personal information.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Nobody is ever gonna ask for that. Banks. You guys
- 38:25Speaker 2: should know that your bank would never call and be like, Hi,
- 38:28Speaker 2: is that Jessica, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah it is Jessica. Hi,
- 38:32Speaker 2: sorry Jessica. To continue this conversation, we need your like
- 38:35Speaker 2: your birth to Haiti and your account number. They're never
- 38:38Speaker 2: going to call you and ask for that personal information.
- 38:41Speaker 2: They might ask you, oh, hey, jess what's your You've
- 38:43Speaker 2: called us. But also you know what you can do.
- 38:47Speaker 2: You can say, hey, thanks so much, bank man, would
- 38:49Speaker 2: love to continue this conversation. Feels very legitimate. What's your landline?
- 38:53Speaker 2: I'll call you back so that you can guarantee that's
- 38:56Speaker 2: not a dodgy phone number. At the end of the day,
- 38:59Speaker 2: you need to be consistently checking, like as in, just
- 39:03Speaker 2: check yourself, be like could this be fake? Be vigilant,
- 39:06Speaker 2: always think everything's a scam. Like me, you might find
- 39:09Speaker 2: your ATM is bugged and it would be a fun
- 39:12Speaker 2: social media piece of content. And then if you ever
- 39:15Speaker 2: feel like you have been scammed, whether you have been
- 39:17Speaker 2: or not, contact your bank immediately. The sooner you can
- 39:20Speaker 2: intercept that payment, the sooner that you can get on
- 39:23Speaker 2: it and the bank is able to pull it back
- 39:25Speaker 2: or cancel the transaction, the better because if you leave
- 39:29Speaker 2: it a week because you're like, oh, I don't know,
- 39:30Speaker 2: let's just see how it goes, it could be gone.
- 39:34Speaker 2: It could be gone. So I think that's a laundry list.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Three I would love for you just like the more
- 39:41Speaker 2: the merrier.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Things that I've seen. So things to be vigilant off
- 39:44Speaker 3: when you get emails asking always click and look at
- 39:48Speaker 3: the email because you know, when you get an email
- 39:50Speaker 3: it to say from Jessica Ricky and then if you
- 39:52Speaker 3: click it, it will say you got the inmitual email.
- 39:55Speaker 3: It's very common for it to stay from I don't know,
- 39:57Speaker 3: Bendigo Bank and then you click on it and at
- 40:00Speaker 3: from XYZ two three form blah blah blah blah.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Then it has like Bendy Go Bank in the username still.
- 40:06Speaker 3: And you're like, hold on, yeah, So always look at
- 40:08Speaker 3: the actual email links will never come to you from
- 40:11Speaker 3: tech via tech from your financial institution, Like they'll never say.
- 40:15Speaker 2: I'll click this link to verify your bank details. Yeah,
- 40:18Speaker 2: it looks like suspicious activity on your account. Click this
- 40:20Speaker 2: link to confirm whether or not it was you. So
- 40:22Speaker 2: don't like, always go directly through your banking app, go
- 40:25Speaker 2: directly through your banking website. Don't click those links and
- 40:29Speaker 2: then the other one. Someone DMB the other.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Day and ask me about this. They're like, you do
- 40:32Speaker 3: a lot of Facebook marketplace stuff. Can you tell me
- 40:35Speaker 3: there's a common thing at the moment where people will
- 40:37Speaker 3: ask to pay you via card or direct debit, and
- 40:41Speaker 3: then they'll charge back the payment so that the payment
- 40:44Speaker 3: then bounces back to them.
- 40:46Speaker 2: So rude, How do you stop that?
- 40:48Speaker 3: It's really hard to do, Like you, there's not a
- 40:51Speaker 3: lot you can do, so like your options are only
- 40:54Speaker 3: take cash, although I understand if you're selling a couch
- 40:56Speaker 3: like five hundred dollars, you might not want five hundred
- 40:58Speaker 3: dollars in cash.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I would prefer that then having some random be able
- 41:02Speaker 2: to charge back. Yeah, totally.
- 41:04Speaker 3: The other thing is look at reviews and stuff. So
- 41:06Speaker 3: even a lot of people don't realize this when you
- 41:08Speaker 3: sell stuff on Facebook marketplaces, you can rate like the
- 41:10Speaker 3: transaction the seller. So even just if you're buying something
- 41:13Speaker 3: from someone you know and you want to check that
- 41:15Speaker 3: they're not selling fake or that they're not kind of dodgy,
- 41:17Speaker 3: just like click on their profile and it will usually
- 41:19Speaker 3: list if they've sold stuff before, they'll have a rating.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's also worth just looking at that.
- 41:24Speaker 3: It's not a perfect system because selling stuff on marketplace
- 41:27Speaker 3: or gum Tree or whatever is you're in it. It's
- 41:29Speaker 3: a very personal. There's no system in place to really
- 41:32Speaker 3: prevent that. But just again being like super hyper vigilant
- 41:36Speaker 3: or a good one is PayPal transacting through PayPal, so
- 41:38Speaker 3: say hey, like sorry, not happy to do direct via
- 41:41Speaker 3: the bank, but PayPal has really fantastic systems in place
- 41:45Speaker 3: to protect buyers and sellers, So you may have to
- 41:48Speaker 3: pay a few dollars in transaction fees, but for peace
- 41:51Speaker 3: of mind, I think that.
- 41:52Speaker 2: That's really worth it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I love
- 41:54Speaker 2: that regular people are doing this, like the I think
- 41:56Speaker 2: so like I think people are selling stuff on Facebook
- 41:58Speaker 2: market play or going to buy stuff on Facebook Marketplace
- 42:01Speaker 2: and then being like yeah, so sorry, can I just
- 42:03Speaker 2: transfer you the cash and then they're trying to charge
- 42:06Speaker 2: it back. Really that is so mean, which is awful,
- 42:09Speaker 2: But again, I'm so angry about that on everybody.
- 42:13Speaker 3: That Yeah, it just seems like and I mean, I
- 42:15Speaker 3: know that times are tough and people get desperate, but
- 42:17Speaker 3: I think that the moral of the story is you
- 42:19Speaker 3: do have to just kind of be a little bit
- 42:21Speaker 3: suspicious and a little bit aware and do whatever you
- 42:23Speaker 3: can to protect yourself. And sometimes that means taking more steps,
- 42:26Speaker 3: but better that than you know, losing three hundred and
- 42:29Speaker 3: fifty dollars, right, yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Like, and if it's a little bit more life, I mean,
- 42:32Speaker 2: I get it, but at the end of the day,
- 42:34Speaker 2: it's protecting you. Yeah, that's invaluable. Should we get into
- 42:38Speaker 2: the DM we should? Oh my gosh, I want to
- 42:40Speaker 2: keep talking about scam. I'm not going to you can
- 42:43Speaker 2: do a whole week, okay, okay, okay. I will talk
- 42:45Speaker 2: to Emma off air. Emma is our producer for those
- 42:47Speaker 2: of you following along at home, and we will do
- 42:49Speaker 2: a deep dive into scams, the most common ones. What's
- 42:52Speaker 2: going around. Oh, it's going to beat you. Ready, beg,
- 42:55Speaker 2: I'm so ready? Okay, are we ready for the DM?
- 42:57Speaker 2: Of the week, though, Yes, okay, here's the DM we got. Guys.
- 43:00Speaker 2: My partner has been out of work for about nine
- 43:03Speaker 2: months and is really struggling to find a new job,
- 43:05Speaker 2: not even getting interviews, even though they've been looking in
- 43:08Speaker 2: diverse fields and roles. I've held with their resume and
- 43:12Speaker 2: everything's in order, and I'm stumped as to why they've
- 43:15Speaker 2: been given no job offers and only one interview this
- 43:19Speaker 2: whole time. I know communication is key, and I've tried
- 43:22Speaker 2: several times to have conversations about it, but as it's
- 43:26Speaker 2: a sensitive topic, I don't want to push it, and
- 43:28Speaker 2: my partner says they'll reach out with any updates instead
- 43:32Speaker 2: of me bringing it up. There've actually been very few updates.
- 43:36Speaker 2: We've been together for about four and a half years
- 43:38Speaker 2: and don't live together yet, and I feel like our
- 43:41Speaker 2: lives are currently on pause and we're getting further away
- 43:44Speaker 2: from being able to buy a house, which is a
- 43:46Speaker 2: shared goal because of his unemployment. I want them to
- 43:49Speaker 2: feel confident and successful, and I feel very helpless and
- 43:52Speaker 2: scared at how long this has gone on. As savings
- 43:56Speaker 2: don't last forever. What can I do in this situation
- 43:59Speaker 2: without being too pushy? What would you guys do well,
- 44:04Speaker 2: as you guys know, obviously, I was maybe redundant last
- 44:07Speaker 2: year and I was with Jess at the time, and
- 44:10Speaker 2: I still am, but I sugar mama, Yeah, sugar MoMA.
- 44:13Speaker 2: She really was a sugar mama for a little while,
- 44:15Speaker 2: and I suges we appreciate it. And I couldn't find
- 44:20Speaker 2: work for ages, but I was actively looking. So I
- 44:23Speaker 2: feel like there's two different things like if if if
- 44:24Speaker 2: this partner is actively looking. And some time when Jess
- 44:29Speaker 2: was like sticking by me and being really nice and patient,
- 44:34Speaker 2: I was like almost feeling this weird, like inferiority sort
- 44:39Speaker 2: of thing. I was just like, oh, I don't want
- 44:41Speaker 2: you to feel that. Thank you. Well, I think that's
- 44:43Speaker 2: like there's there's a part of it that like if
- 44:45Speaker 2: if your partner is actively trying and really is trying
- 44:48Speaker 2: to get a job and cannot because that is literally
- 44:51Speaker 2: what happened to me, And it's not because I wasn't
- 44:53Speaker 2: trying whatever. I sent hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of
- 44:56Speaker 2: couple letters and resumes and and kept changing them and
- 45:00Speaker 2: you know, all these things that I was trying and
- 45:02Speaker 2: then couldn't find a job. So I was like kind
- 45:04Speaker 2: of at a point where I was like, I was
- 45:05Speaker 2: almost like to that to just like I was like,
- 45:08Speaker 2: you can you know, there's no no pressure to like
- 45:11Speaker 2: hang around if you you know, I was like, and
- 45:13Speaker 2: then she was like you what I know? And she
- 45:16Speaker 2: was like, I'm not going to I'm not going to
- 45:17Speaker 2: break up with you because you don't have a job.
- 45:19Speaker 2: I happened to like you as a human band because
- 45:22Speaker 2: you earn money totally, and so in this moment, it
- 45:25Speaker 2: was like that was so meaningful. And so I think
- 45:27Speaker 2: for your partner if and I say again, like I
- 45:30Speaker 2: really want to clarify, like if they actually like really
- 45:32Speaker 2: really genuinely trying to find a job, if I'm like
- 45:36Speaker 2: putting myself in your partner's shoes, I'm like, the only
- 45:39Speaker 2: thing I needed was that reassurance that no one was
- 45:42Speaker 2: angry at me, everyone still loved me, I still was valued,
- 45:45Speaker 2: and I'm still a functioning member of society. I'm not
- 45:49Speaker 2: going to be like banished.
- 45:51Speaker 4: From everyone's lives because I can't find a job, because
- 45:53Speaker 4: that's like I can't find a job, I don't have money,
- 45:54Speaker 4: I'm losing my savings. Everyone hates me, no one loves me.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I don't.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Don't you're not worthy of job and you just viral.
- 46:00Speaker 4: And so they could be the case that your partner's
- 46:02Speaker 4: actively trying or maybe just like really really low and
- 46:05Speaker 4: isn't like trying as hard as they once were. But
- 46:08Speaker 4: either way, I think that the person who is you know,
- 46:11Speaker 4: has lost their job and is looking definitely needs support
- 46:13Speaker 4: and there's no rush really, like I understand like people
- 46:16Speaker 4: have different you know, goals, and it's like, oh my god,
- 46:19Speaker 4: we're so close, like we're going to buy a house
- 46:20Speaker 4: at the end of this year, but really connection and
- 46:22Speaker 4: love is way more important, and if you love each other,
- 46:25Speaker 4: then I think just keep being patient, which I know
- 46:28Speaker 4: sucks to because if you're in it, it's like I
- 46:30Speaker 4: under totally understand the fear. But then on the flip side,
- 46:33Speaker 4: if your partner's like just not communicating and not trying
- 46:36Speaker 4: and not you know, anything, then that definitely needs a
- 46:39Speaker 4: very very serious conversation. That's probably symptomatic if something bigger.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Maybe they don't you know, maybe they don't actually care
- 46:46Speaker 4: about this financial goal. Maybe that maybe that means that
- 46:48Speaker 4: they they're not respecting you as much as they should
- 46:51Speaker 4: and all these other things. So I'm like if that's
- 46:53Speaker 4: the case the case. If it feels more like that,
- 46:55Speaker 4: then that's definitely you definitely need to talk about your
- 46:59Speaker 4: future together. In your future financially, communication is key.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Shuger, I agree.
- 47:06Speaker 3: I think that it's hard because your partners obviously tried
- 47:08Speaker 3: to draw a boundary in saying they'll come to you
- 47:11Speaker 3: with updates. But at the same time, if I was
- 47:13Speaker 3: in our listener's shoes, I think that I also would
- 47:15Speaker 3: probably be stressing. And I think, as you said, maybe
- 47:17Speaker 3: communicating to them and saying, hey, like, I understand that
- 47:19Speaker 3: you're probably under a lot of stress because you're, you know,
- 47:22Speaker 3: not feeling like you're being able to get a job
- 47:24Speaker 3: and validate them, and I understand that you're trying.
- 47:28Speaker 2: I see that.
- 47:28Speaker 3: But from my end, I also would really appreciate being
- 47:31Speaker 3: kept in the loops so that I can have an
- 47:33Speaker 3: understanding of what's going on because we are in this together,
- 47:36Speaker 3: particularly if we're sharing goals and finances. The one piece
- 47:39Speaker 3: of actionable advice I would give is that if you've
- 47:42Speaker 3: been applying and applying for nine months, and you know,
- 47:45Speaker 3: our listener said that he was applying across a range
- 47:48Speaker 3: of industries, I would suggest that maybe he needs to
- 47:51Speaker 3: be applying for lower level roles. Like if you're applying
- 47:56Speaker 3: over nine months and you're still not having any luck
- 47:57Speaker 3: and you're getting to the point where you're stressed about money,
- 48:00Speaker 3: as hard as it is, you might just have to
- 48:02Speaker 3: go I'll take what I can get totally. I'll pick
- 48:05Speaker 3: up an evening shift at the pub, or I'll you know,
- 48:08Speaker 3: instead of being a senior manager of marketing, I'll take
- 48:11Speaker 3: a marketing manager or a marketing assistant. And it sucks,
- 48:16Speaker 3: but there's no shame in just taking what you can
- 48:19Speaker 3: get to keep yourself afloat.
- 48:21Speaker 2: Until we keep you on track to get your goals correct.
- 48:24Speaker 3: You can still interview for jobs, like you can keep applying,
- 48:27Speaker 3: keep applying, keep interviewing, but it sounds like you're at
- 48:30Speaker 3: the point where you just kind of or your partner
- 48:32Speaker 3: just needs a job to have some money coming in
- 48:35Speaker 3: to maybe fill the gap on the resume, to make
- 48:38Speaker 3: sure that you guys are able to achieve your goals.
- 48:40Speaker 3: And I think, as hard as it is, sometimes you
- 48:43Speaker 3: do just have to take a step backwards to take
- 48:45Speaker 3: a step forwards, you know, take a slightly lower role
- 48:48Speaker 3: so that you can progress within that company, or take
- 48:50Speaker 3: a slightly lower role so that you can work on
- 48:52Speaker 3: building your skill set or study or do whatever. But
- 48:56Speaker 3: nine months is a really long time and it's definitely
- 48:58Speaker 3: not always the fault of the app can but it
- 49:01Speaker 3: sounds like you're getting to the point where you just
- 49:03Speaker 3: need to be able to do something, and that would
- 49:06Speaker 3: probably be That's what I would do personally.
- 49:08Speaker 2: I think that's great advice, Like that's it's just kind
- 49:11Speaker 2: of like, get out there, get a job because do
- 49:15Speaker 2: you know what? It obviously is much harder done than said,
- 49:20Speaker 2: but being employed is going to make you more employable
- 49:23Speaker 2: to your dream job as well. Yeah, oh, I've actually
- 49:25Speaker 2: got a job at the moment, Like I want to
- 49:27Speaker 2: step up into this or do you know what? The
- 49:30Speaker 2: work ethic? I remember, and I've said this before on
- 49:32Speaker 2: the podcast about you, Jess, I remember when I hired you,
- 49:35Speaker 2: you'd been made redundant, were going through COVID I in
- 49:37Speaker 2: order and I was like, what are you doing at
- 49:39Speaker 2: the moment? And you were like, I'm working in a
- 49:41Speaker 2: warehouse and I was like doing what And You're like
- 49:42Speaker 2: packing boxes and I was like great, Like I adored
- 49:46Speaker 2: that work ethic. That's the type of person that I
- 49:47Speaker 2: want working for me, But the contrast would have been, Oh,
- 49:52Speaker 2: I'm just waiting to find my perfect job. I got
- 49:54Speaker 2: made redundant and I want to like it spoke volumes
- 49:58Speaker 2: about your character that you were like, I'll just do
- 50:00Speaker 2: anything actually to fill my time, to keep money coming
- 50:02Speaker 2: in and food on the table. I was like, mad, respect,
- 50:05Speaker 2: that's the type of person I want to surround myself with.
- 50:07Speaker 2: And I literally didn't even take it much further. I
- 50:10Speaker 2: was like, I don't think I even cared about qualifications.
- 50:13Speaker 2: It was all about work ethic And I was like,
- 50:14Speaker 2: that is who I want on my team. Yeah, and
- 50:17Speaker 2: I think that that's really important to remember. Not because
- 50:20Speaker 2: I'm like gold standard employer, but like that's how most
- 50:24Speaker 2: people would see it. Like, and it's not a bad thing.
- 50:27Speaker 2: I guess updating your resume. I know you've had a
- 50:29Speaker 2: look at it, but like, would it be worth getting
- 50:31Speaker 2: somebody external to have a look at it and tailor it?
- 50:34Speaker 2: Are you using targeted cover letters?
- 50:36Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 50:37Speaker 2: Big one. So like you're just submitting your resume on Seek.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Like because if you're just going on Seek and hitting apply, Apply, Apply,
- 50:42Speaker 2: like there's no tailoring, there's no personality, Like it is
- 50:46Speaker 2: hard to get a job at the moment, and tailored
- 50:48Speaker 2: cover letters do stand out, and I know that a
- 50:51Speaker 2: lot of people, and like, we've had this heat before.
- 50:53Speaker 2: You've probably seen it, just I don't know if you've
- 50:55Speaker 2: paid attention to it on TikTok beck because I don't
- 50:57Speaker 2: think we've done a lot of employment stuff recently. But
- 51:00Speaker 2: people when I say, oh, write a tailored cover letter,
- 51:03Speaker 2: They're like, I shouldn't have to do that. My experience
- 51:06Speaker 2: should speak for itself. It's like, I totally agree with you,
- 51:09Speaker 2: but like I'm not the one hiring, it's other people,
- 51:12Speaker 2: and I'm giving advice that hopefully puts you ahead of
- 51:15Speaker 2: the curve, that puts you ahead of the other applicants.
- 51:18Speaker 2: And a tailored cover letter where you've clearly done your
- 51:20Speaker 2: research and you understand, you know the company and the
- 51:24Speaker 2: values it brings. Like people see that and go, wow,
- 51:27Speaker 2: that's a lot of effort. I love someone who puts
- 51:29Speaker 2: that effort into my business. I would be optimizing your LinkedIn. Yeah,
- 51:34Speaker 2: so like not always the best thing for your industry.
- 51:38Speaker 2: I don't know what industry you're in, but like making
- 51:41Speaker 2: sure that your LinkedIn is up to date, has all
- 51:43Speaker 2: of your current stuff, your degrees, like all of those things,
- 51:47Speaker 2: so that if someone is looking you up, they're getting
- 51:49Speaker 2: a really clean experience of what you do, how you
- 51:52Speaker 2: do it. Also cleaning up your online presence. No, it's
- 51:56Speaker 2: a relevant thing.
- 51:57Speaker 3: Like in this day and age, people are looking people
- 52:00Speaker 3: on Facebook and Instagram and whatever to see who they
- 52:02Speaker 3: might be hiring.
- 52:03Speaker 2: I don't think anyone in our community is going to
- 52:05Speaker 2: have a presence that is negative. But like if there
- 52:09Speaker 2: are things online like I don't know, you love to
- 52:14Speaker 2: blast your current boss on Twitter or something, and like
- 52:17Speaker 2: it's quote anonymous, but it's under your government name, and
- 52:21Speaker 2: then I somehow google you and find that I don't
- 52:24Speaker 2: want you working for me. That's weird. So I think
- 52:26Speaker 2: that just making sure that you're dotting all your e's
- 52:28Speaker 2: and crossing all your t's, and yeah, I think professional
- 52:32Speaker 2: help could help. Like I know you're chewing three savings
- 52:35Speaker 2: at the moment, but like sitting down and maybe talking
- 52:37Speaker 2: to a career coach, maybe talking to someone who does
- 52:39Speaker 2: a professional resume. Like not the worst idea in the
- 52:43Speaker 2: entire world, because I'm not saying that you don't know
- 52:45Speaker 2: what you're talking about, but like, clearly something's got to change.
- 52:48Speaker 2: True and maybe your partner. I don't know. I don't
- 52:51Speaker 2: like getting advice from my partner. Yeah, I don't want
- 52:53Speaker 2: to be told by him that, oh, yoursmey is not
- 52:56Speaker 2: good enough whatever. Maybe like an external doing that would
- 52:58Speaker 2: feel a little bit nice, I'm sure. So it feels
- 53:00Speaker 2: can sometimes feel like, oh my god, I'm already.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that's anything, Like don't they are probably feeling embarrassed.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Like I know that when I took a job that
- 53:09Speaker 3: was not there's anything wrong with working a warehouse like it, but.
- 53:12Speaker 2: It was just not work done before.
- 53:14Speaker 3: But it was not like Youurine, I'd been a career girly,
- 53:17Speaker 3: and I was like, wow, like I feel a little
- 53:18Speaker 3: bit like I'm taking a step in that doesn't a
- 53:21Speaker 3: differentiation to the direction that I want to be going,
- 53:24Speaker 3: and that felt really embarrassing. And not finding a job
- 53:27Speaker 3: for such a long period of time can also feel
- 53:29Speaker 3: really embarrassing.
- 53:29Speaker 2: So and I was literally the opposite. When I looked
- 53:32Speaker 2: at you from the outside, I was like, whoa, Like
- 53:35Speaker 2: that's ilite ye, So like people, I promise looking at
- 53:38Speaker 2: you from my perspective, not the way that you're seeing
- 53:40Speaker 2: yourself in that moment.
- 53:42Speaker 3: So like reminding him that that's the case, but also
- 53:45Speaker 3: there's nothing to be embarrassed about, like you've got it.
- 53:47Speaker 3: Sometimes you just got to do what you gotta do
- 53:48Speaker 3: and whatever that looks like, that's okay.
- 53:50Speaker 2: I was just gonna say, I use I use recruitment agencies,
- 53:53Speaker 2: and I don't know if that's the thing. That's a
- 53:55Speaker 2: great ideas. Use those because they're like they're kind of
- 53:57Speaker 2: like out there and they're doing the work for you,
- 53:58Speaker 2: and let's play. I love those places. We did ask
- 54:01Speaker 2: the community. We were like, we have your two cents please.
- 54:04Speaker 2: We said, if you were our community member, what would
- 54:07Speaker 2: you do. Nineteen percent of you said, try and help
- 54:10Speaker 2: with the job hunt, twelve percent said I'm going to
- 54:12Speaker 2: give them space to figure it out, and sixty nine
- 54:14Speaker 2: percent said I'm going to need to have a serious
- 54:17Speaker 2: conversation about next steps. We then asked, have you or
- 54:21Speaker 2: have you had a partner that has experienced extended unemployment.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Thirty one percent said, yep, it was really hard it
- 54:27Speaker 2: would be. Thirty one percent beck yeah, sixty five percent
- 54:31Speaker 2: said no. Luckily enough. Four percent of you said I'm
- 54:34Speaker 2: actually in the same boat right now. I'm so sorry.
- 54:37Speaker 2: You has tough spot to save that so next we said,
- 54:41Speaker 2: all right, give us your actual two cents, type out
- 54:43Speaker 2: how you're feeling. Someone said, as the partner who was unemployed,
- 54:48Speaker 2: please just give them space. They feel guilty enough already
- 54:51Speaker 2: that's been reiterated in the way that you were saying
- 54:53Speaker 2: you for feeling Beck. Yeah, and I just I totally
- 54:58Speaker 2: respect that, but it's often not a reflection on news
- 55:00Speaker 2: softa to reflection of the market. Someone else said, make
- 55:04Speaker 2: it a fun night activity. Why not have a pizza,
- 55:06Speaker 2: some drinks and do some team job searching together.
- 55:09Speaker 3: Cute.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's nice. It's also just a really nice idea.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Like imagine if Jess turned around and said, Beck, I
- 55:14Speaker 2: don't judge you for not having a job, but do
- 55:16Speaker 2: you want to get a pizza and just like deep
- 55:18Speaker 2: dive one evening? True, I feel really supportive.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Someone else said. The other thing is what are they
- 55:24Speaker 2: doing while not working right now? That's a big one.
- 55:28Speaker 3: Are they helping picking up slack around the house or
- 55:30Speaker 3: are they playing video games in their pjs all day?
- 55:33Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 55:33Speaker 2: And I mean you did say that they weren't living together,
- 55:35Speaker 2: but surely you could get a good idea of what
- 55:38Speaker 2: they're doing in their sharehouse or what they're doing in
- 55:39Speaker 2: their parents' house or what that looks like. Someone else said,
- 55:43Speaker 2: hr here, try applying for temporary roles first, more immediately
- 55:47Speaker 2: available and recruiters will actually help you. That's a great
- 55:51Speaker 2: a suggest Someone else said, there is an element of
- 55:56Speaker 2: who you know. Maybe attend some networking events or reach
- 55:59Speaker 2: out to your network also really good, depending on what
- 56:02Speaker 2: industry you Yeah. Someone said, shared financial and life goals
- 56:06Speaker 2: mean you do get input into the other person's life.
- 56:09Speaker 2: That's a that's and that's kind of how I feel.
- 56:11Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 56:11Speaker 3: I was like, I understand, and you should respect somebody's boundary.
- 56:15Speaker 3: But at the same time, I can also understand that
- 56:17Speaker 3: if it affects you as the partner, you have a
- 56:21Speaker 3: right to at least have a seat at the table
- 56:23Speaker 3: for a conversation. How much you're entitled to is to
- 56:25Speaker 3: be decided between the two of you, but once you
- 56:27Speaker 3: are working towards things together, you're at.
- 56:29Speaker 2: The same table. Yeah. Yeah, I like that idea. I
- 56:32Speaker 2: haven't really thought about like what entitles you to have
- 56:35Speaker 2: a opinion, but it's nice to have some I guess boundaries.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Someone else said, totally get it. The job market is
- 56:43Speaker 2: really hard right now. My partner applied for more than
- 56:45Speaker 2: two hundred jobs last year and got two interviews. That
- 56:50Speaker 2: is crell it's happening. It's so weird. That is awful.
- 56:54Speaker 2: But also thank you for sharing, because I know that
- 56:59Speaker 2: so many people are in this situation, and I think
- 57:01Speaker 2: that the person that might have written in is like,
- 57:03Speaker 2: is there something wrong. It's like, it's actually hard for
- 57:06Speaker 2: so many people at the moment, and you can start
- 57:09Speaker 2: to think it's you. It's not like, more often than not,
- 57:11Speaker 2: it's absolutely not. Someone else said, sounds like the partner
- 57:15Speaker 2: needs to apply for temporary jobs outside of his field.
- 57:18Speaker 2: So similar to your advice, yess, and also similar to
- 57:20Speaker 2: that advice from HR and then the last one because
- 57:23Speaker 2: I won't go on and on said tell them they
- 57:25Speaker 2: could like do Nightville or cleaning or uber It's or
- 57:28Speaker 2: any other job to keep them away from a dog
- 57:31Speaker 2: GMLM so much. Yeah, an MLM is not an option.
- 57:38Speaker 2: It'll actually end up probably costing you more than what
- 57:41Speaker 2: you would make, so that's not a good opportunity. Anyway,
- 57:45Speaker 2: That's a great place to leave it. I love you guys.
- 57:48Speaker 2: You are so funny. Have a good week. We'll see
- 57:51Speaker 2: you bright early Monday morning from Money Diary. Until then,
