- Alex: Welcome to another edition of the Unsexy Podcast where we're talking about the unsexy side of everything. Today we are talking about something incredibly unsexy, which are the most overrated exercises ever. I was nervous about this because when Aaron proposed the idea, I thought it was weightlifting exercises specific to like things that you do at the gym. Like, man, it's hard for me to like find five exercises that I'm just like, this can't do anything for you. And then he said it was any exercise, and it became incredibly easy for me to find those five overrated exercises. So gonna go f five from worst to worstest for lack of for lack of a better term. And then we will Aaron: Yeah, yes, yes, exactly. To to the worstest. Alex: I th I I'm a little I think we'll have two crossovers, and then I think our other three will be different. I do wanna just do a really quick honorable mention that I was thinking of before I realized it was all whatchamacallit. Aaron: It'll be f it'll be funny if it'll be like number one. Alex: It's no, no, like it's like I don't think you'll have this. It's anything bad form related. So any exercise where someone is executing poor form is an overrated exercise because you're not Aaron: Yes. Alex: gonna get the benefits of it. And regular I have to do my fat guy who doesn't come to the gym anymore. regular lackluster Aaron: Yes. Alex: effort where you're just sitting, sitting down and taking up space. So those are the just want to get those two out of the way. But my number Aaron: I think you were talking about just overrated people in general. Alex: Right. Yeah. It's it's been fascinating and I know that's not what this this is about. So a quick tangent. Now going almost four straight months to the gym, you just people come and go a lot quicker than I realized. Or just like, like you were the person a staple here for thirty days and then you just disappeared. But anyways, I digress. Aaron: It is weird. I've had there is there was one person to keep us off track. it was like a chick and her husband, and they were there for like a like a year and a year and a half, and then they just disappeared for like six months. And then they came back. And I always like I don't care enough to ask them where they were for six months 'cause I just don't care. 'Cause it could be like, we started working out at night for a while because of our schedule and now we're back to where like it could be something like that. And then I just look like a weirdo was like, I noticed you haven't been here for six months. Where where where'd you go? Alex: No. Aaron: but Yeah. I was like, I I just I just always I'm just a curious person. We should get an apartment together. Alex: I just missed you. I miss you so much. I miss your musk. So number five for me, little bit interesting. S squat rack squats. And Aaron: Okay. Alex: this is why. I think it requires way too high level of technical form for efficacy. So you have to be a bodybuilder for it to be not overrated. And that is 0.001% of the population. Even people who I know who have been going to the gym regularly still experience bad form, which leads to not getting the best results as possible. I can I hope people listen to this and I hope people criticize every single one of the things that I have. But the squat rack squat, number five. For me. Aaron: Well, what's funny about that is spoiler alert, that's actually my number one. the well, Alex: wow. Wow, crazy. Aaron: bec the main reason is because and this is like I mean, like the I how I put this list together is like what my most overrated ones are. And of course, like, yeah, it's your list. So it's gonna be like, but no, like personally for me, these exercises doing them for me suck. and I don't like them. and so and so for someone who's like into powerlifting. Like you have to barbell squat. You have to, because that's part of what you're going to be doing. So obviously they're gonna be like, well, you're an idiot. I have to barbell squat, and that's what you want to get strong in. That's what like whatever, good for you. For me, and kind of what you listed is the same reason is like the the risk of injury i is not worth it for me. Like when the if we're just doing the math on that, like there's a it's a high level of risk of injury, just for like your lower back, and just if you just don't do it. perfect if you don't execute it perfectly, you could just completely fuck your back up. And then there's so many alternative exercises that do pretty much the exact same thing. And we're talking about you're building your quads, your your glutes, your hamstrings, like you're there's just other exercises that can do it way more safely and and I would rather do those. So I complete obviously completely agree with you because that's my number one. And like I so there are quotes from Alex: Finally, payback. Aaron: There are quotes from famous. I actually went to because I wanted to like justify mine. So of course I'm gonna find quotes from people that agree with me. Alex: Yeah. Aaron: let's see, Dorian Yates, who's one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. he said at this point in my development, I think squats are a bit overrated. So it's true Alex: Ha ha ha. Aaron: he said they're a bit overrated. and there's just a lot of a lot of bodybuilders. I mean, I think a lot of people have moved away from doing squats to machine work. So like hack squats, leg press and stuff like that. So well, we're gonna talk about these for a long time. Alex: So another s another another quote from one of our favorite people. I've never done a squat in my life. Donald J. Trump. All right. Let's move on from there. I think that's I think that's as all Aaron: 'Cause you don't have to squat when you go like this. Alex: he's just doing. He's he's just doing No It's just Aaron and Alex laughing for the last 15 seconds of of of doing the the masturbation dance. Aaron: The double jump. Everybody knows what the John the the Trump dance is. Everyone knows. You take two hands and you, you know, you start start partying. Alex: Good. Aaron: my number five, Alex, is the barbell. That's funny, like they're almost all barbell. barbell upright row, but I'm just saying upright row in general. So that's this movement. So you're you're if you don't know what an upright row is, you're Alex: Yep. s standing straight up. Aaron: standing straight up and you can use it. I mean you can use like a cambered bar or whatever it is, but it's like this. I used to do those and my shoulder got actually you wanna know what? Every single one of these exercises I have experienced pain with, and so probably why I don't like them. but they it just puts it puts like unnecessary load on your on your shoulders. Like it's just like it's just a crappy exercise. If you're trying to like get your shoulders big and it turns it kind of like a trap exercise too. So are you are you trying to build your traps? Are you trying to build your shoulders? Do one or the other one or the other. there's really no unique hypertrophy benefit to doing these. And like I said, it just it just can ag aggravate like impingements. And and that's what happened to me. Like I I had a nice pinch feeling when I was doing these. And I was like, this is here's a lesson for everybody. If you're doing an exercise and you get like a pinch or a whatever, just stop doing that exercise. Like just maybe not forever, but like that day, put it down, do something else. I was doing even so an exercise that I love. I was doing a leg press. And on my last, it was my second to last set. I was going up and I just like like my lower back kind of got didn't hurt, but it was like, And I just saw and I was like, all right, I'm done. I'm done with those for today. And I went back to it the next week and I was fine. But just if like something feels off when you're doing an exercise, don't push through it. I I learned the hard way and how to get shoulder surgery. So just don't do that. So mine. barbell upright rope. Let's see. Dorian Ray Dorian Yates also said this is a Alex: Yeah. Aaron: nothing exercise. A nothing exercise. Alex: that's actually the one that I would that would hurt me the most. It's like I actually do like the exercise a lot. Like I like it, but it would hurt the shoulder every time I did it. Would you Aaron: Yes. Yes. Alex: say I I put you on the spot here, the best exercises are the ones that require the least amount of movement for the centralized muscle that you're trying to target. Aaron: If it depends on that's how I like to do it. So you're talking about you are you're talking about you're talking about either isolation or compound movements. Alex: Like you should like 'cause you're Yeah. Aaron: So I prefer mostly isolation if I'm trying to focus on that. But there are compound movements, especially when you're talking about like a lot of your back stuff. You're gonna be doing lots of different, you know, if you're doing like a like a rack, not a rack pole, but you're doing any sort of like row, you're gonna be engaging like your biceps. Alex: Ever yeah. Aaron: You're gonna be engaged and then like everyone's like, Yeah, every exercise you're gonna be engaged in different like, yeah, no shit. But like we're just talking about like actual, like kind of what people would label as compound movements to isolation. I actually probably do mostly isolation movements than compound movements. So Alex: Just just curious. number four for me, I have a feeling our lists are actually gonna be like I know that we had that one. I think I did my list a little bit different. Box jumps. Box jumps are are number four. Why? None of us are none none of us are gonna be in the NBA or play professional volleyball. There's no reason for you to do box jumps. Like I I know I'm coming at this from a very building muscle type way, but this box jumps. Will build your muscles somewhat, but not nearly as well as other going back to compound movement versus what was the other word? Aaron: Mm-hmm. Isolation. Alex: Versus isolation, like just isolating the calf. And once again, the likelihood of injury, the number of times that I've seen people rip off this shit their shin in Aaron: my. Alex: high school. Just makes me realize like it wasn't like every single day, right? But like three Aaron: No. Alex: times was enough. And I'm just like, that's that's doesn't seem great. Let's not do that anymore. Yeah. Box jumps, box Aaron: Once would be enough if I saw that. Yeah. Yes. Alex: jumps and like Achilles, like there's a million different things that can go wrong with doing box jumps. And once again, unless you are be a professional athlete being trained by a professional, more harm than good will come of it. Aaron: Yeah, and especially when there's like way better, like you said, there's better exercises to do. And I think a lot of these are like people of our age or around our age. Like, why are you doing box jumps still? Like, are you just trying to fuck Alex: Seriously. Aaron: your knees up? Like, what do we what are we doing here? Why do we, what do we what what why do why do I keep saying what do we, what are we? Like, it's like Alex: Didn't even think of that one. Joints too. like I what Aaron: it's just like insane. Like, why would you do box I I did box jumps back in the day, and then probably you did too, when I was trying to be able to slam dunk a basketball, do different forms of like Alex: Trying to touch the net over here. Aaron: box jumps and whatever. Yeah. yeah, I agree. Yeah, I d I haven't done box jumps in a long time. And if you're like, well, it's good for cardio, dude, there's a million other things that are great for cardio. Go go on a, you know, go on a bike. Go on a treadmill. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Alex: Go yell at your kids. There's a lot of stuff there's a lot of things you can do for your heart. Aaron: Yes. And that that's aren't gonna screw up your screw up your knees or your ankles. You're just you're one misstep away from breaking your ankles. all right. So mine my number four is the barbell deadlift. Again, these are all gonna be pretty similar as far as like there's just a high risk of injury when you're doing these. And unless you're a power lifter or you are in all honesty, I would just say if you're a powerlifter, if you're a powerlifter or you're like a a world's strongest man competition, there's no reason you should be doing barbell deadlifts. Like, sorry. Alex: You know what? You know why people do it? Because then they can write into Ryan Rasilla's show and they can say they're part of the Thousand Club. Like Aaron: yeah. Alex: I I like I'm obviously being somewhat facetious there, but I do think that there are people who are just like, I want to tell people I lifted a shiz ton of weight. Aaron: Yeah. Yes. Yes. But like when you and like every time I watch someone do it, I I just especially heavy weights, I just I just imagine their spine snapping. Not because I want it to happen, but it's because it just the Alex: Yeah. Aaron: amount of pressure that they're like putting on their like their back while it's I'm just like, God Alex: Thanks for adding the caveat that you don't want people's spines to snap in half. We got Scorpion over here. Finish him. Aaron: but I do wanna say so barbell deadlifts. This is what Phil he has said about it. all seven time, Mr. Olympia. For me to have to go all the way down and do it for what? So he's talking about having to reach all the way down and go up. He d he actually preferred one of the other exercises that I'm not a huge fan of either, but you know, whatever. they're called rack poles. So essentially it's up higher. It's on the on a rack and you're you're You're using you're not going you're not starting from the floor. You're starting from like, I don't know. I don't do them, so I don't know exactly where how to set these up, but I think it's from like knee height, maybe, or maybe mid-thigh. And then you're just going up. So it's a lot it's a lot smaller range of motion and a lot less likely to get injured just because there's less range of motion. So Phil, he says not to do and I'll say I'll do anything that he says that I agree with. Alex: Number number I hope there's a quote for this one. Number three. Aaron: Ha ha. Alex: Running Running is one of the most overrated exercises. I speak from experience on this one. Like th I understand if like What I'm saying here is like the people are like, I go running every single day. Are you gonna get sponsored anytime soon? Are you gonna get sponsored anytime soon? If you're gonna get sponsored, great. Keep running every single day and become a professional athlete that's getting paid for running. I ran like 10 miles a day for over a year's time and did very little muscle work and have nothing to show for it. Ten miles is like an hour to an hour and a half of of day. And maybe people be like, well, your heart is like incredibly strong now because of that. I doubt it. I I doubt that that is the case, but hey, we'll find out. The amount and injury, injuries aside, because obviously you can get injured doing anything. The amount of pressure that you're putting on your joints, so for the longevity of your body, plus the amount of time that it takes to do, I think it's one of the worst things you can do. And I know there's people who be like, didn't you guys just do a run a 13 mile half marathon, then go do a marathon and like go do this. I think that's dumb too. Like I've just I I'm I'll be kind on call. I'll be kind when like we have people on with us, but I will be much more direct here where it's like, I think those are dumb. You are paying money. Listen to me clap. You are paying money to go and run. You're giving money to a corporation to set up this thing for you to go. And guess what? I won I don't know why I'm so enraged about this. I ran a marathon, so that's twenty-six miles, twenty-six point two miles. Aaron: Yeah, yeah. Alex: When our power went out at our apartment complex. So no internet. No, no, no. Sorry. No internet. We had no internet. We did have power. it's like, well, there's nothing to do because we don't have the internet. I went and ran a marathon, Aaron: Well, just gotta go run a marathon. Alex: because just like I have nothing to do. And I realized they're scams. I was like, cause anyone can go run twenty-six point two miles, but you're only doing it for two reasons, to tell people that you did it. And then maybe just to have like some sort of goal that you have. So running is my number three most overrated exercise. There's so many other ways to do cardio. So many other ways. Aaron: Did I tell you when I ran it? Did you did I tell you when I ran a marathon? So I'm in Hawaii and in Honolulu. Alex: This is going. Aaron: I walk out of my hotel and there's a marathon going on. And I just walk into it and start running. I took a picture and then I left. Alex: Didn't pay didn't pay a single dollar to do I mean, didn't pay a single dollar to be in the actual marathon. Aaron: I w I gotta find that picture. I just got in and I started running. I just like took a picture, like a selfie in like in the middle of Alex: So Aaron: everyone that I just went out. I was like, I could tell anyone that I ran at this marathon because I have proof. I'm I'm there. This was before AI. This is a long time ago. but yeah. I'll give you a quote for this one, Alex. Dave you know who David Goggins is? I bet you do. Who'd like the ultra Alex: I do. Aaron: endurance athlete who runs constantly? If for he this is what he said it was never about running. Why do you think I run? It's the worst thing. I hate Alex: Okay. Aaron: doing it more than anything. It's the one thing I hate the most to do. And I do it like I love it. So even he knows it sucks. He's just a masochist. And the only reason he does the writing all the time, because he he loves hating himself or hating what he what you know what I mean. so yeah. Alex: My favorite quote from him is the if you listen to music while you work out, you're a pussy. That's my favorite one. Aaron: Hahahaha Alex: That's that's that's my favorite. Aaron: And this is why I agree with him on all the stuff that I agree with. I do not agree with that one. All right, I gotta roll where I gotta pull up my list. Where'd my list go? I had to find that. I knew there'd be a good, a good one. All right, my next one is military press. and so that is for your shoulders as well. And that's usually what it's usually done with a barbell. I I would say with dumbbells, these aren't as as bad, but barbells, not great. and the reason again, again, it comes back to hurt your shoulders. There's like a necessary, unnecessary risk to reward ratio on all of the things that I'm talking about in my list. Like it just it's hard on your shoulders. And I actually just for me, in all honesty, I'd say like pressing movements. I I don't want to say you don't you don't even need a lot of pressing movements to build big shoulders. I don't do a ton of pressing and my shoulders are f like you know I'm freaking comes with. Hey bro, relax your shoulders. I'm not saying my shoulders are humongous, but I think you could build Alex: Compared to ninety nine percent of the world's population they are, right? You know what mean? Aaron: But I would s I would say like like the the best way to build like shoulders and stuff is gonna be you know lateral raises. I would say just a lot of more isolated movements as opposed to a compound military. Yes. Actually, Alex: So is yours primarily the barbell? Or the Aaron: if you look at it, it literally says barbell at the beginning of every single one of them. Fuck barbells. Alex: Fr So dumbbells. Aaron: I'd say dumbbells are fine. Like, because you can like the the reason I like dumbbells when I would when I do my presses, you can you can like change the angle of where your shoulder and so you could do it in an angle that feels better on your shoulders. You could also like supinate it. So you're going like this. and so that's that can be easier on your shoulders. but you are locked into this one position where you're not gonna be able to bend the bar and then go like that. If you can, you are very strong. So it's just Alex: Yeah. Aaron: locks you display. All right let's see and let's see barbell our free weights presses the key, yes and no. After a while again, the risk factor. Okay. So he was just talking about he someone is asking about for military press. This is Phil Heath, seventh time Mr. Olympia. if he likes the barbell or dumbbells and he's just like, you know, for the essentially what we've been saying the entire time. Like the risk to reward ratio isn't worth using a barbell. Like use a dumbbell. Like that's the that's kind of the best way to do it. So there you go. Alex: Number two, burpees. Cause they're stupid. I don't have to go too super crazy on this one. I don't Aaron: Just the name. The name's stupid. Alex: I don't have to go this long on this one. Most of the time I see p and I the chick that I hate that flaps her wings at the gym, like does them. I'm just like, what are you what are we doing here? Like what are what what body part? I was like, wh why Aaron: Is this why you hate him? Is this why you really hate him because you hate the chick? Alex: 'Cause I'm watching her do them, but then also like I put that in as one of like I like, Why are burpees bad? Like I just asked Google, like, why are burpees bad? I'm just like, Yeah, that is a reason why burpees are bad. Like, it's it's primarily just an exhaustion exercise and the Aaron: Yes. Alex: amount and the muscle part of it, it always comes back to like the muscle part of it. Like you can work out your muscles so much better not doing burpees. There are so Aaron: Yes. Alex: many other exercises that are going to One, because you start to see people as they're getting more and more tired, the form gets worse and worse and the thus the muscle is getting less and less exercise, for lack of a better term, resistance put put towards it. and so I hate burpees. I've always hated burpees, and she just made me hate them more because I'm just like Aaron: you wanna know what I got a good quote for you, Alex? This is actually kind of funny. Alex: Just Aaron: So it's Patrick Murphy. He's like a he's like a celebrity trainer. And his he's burpees aren't good for the human body. You who you know what burpees are good for? They originated in the military as a way of dodging bullets. They're good for dodging bullets. Alex: not come up in my research. That's funny. That's I didn't realize that like that I didn't realize that that was that's crazy that it was created for that. If that's like the real reason it was created, that's wild. It's good for dodging bullets. that's funny. Well you know with all the Aaron: Yeah. We'll run with it. Might yeah, it's great for dodging bullets. What are you gonna dodge bullet well like if Alex: gun violence going on right now I'm like I'm not going to protest. I'll be fine. Aaron: Yeah, exactly. And I I already went to Paris. my number two is the Barbell Bench Press. Fuck barbells. obviously because every single one of mine are barbells. but the bench press, overrated, overrated. there's a million different ways you could build your chest other than doing that. And again, I don't like it because and you wanna I can blame I'm blaming myself. Maybe I just never had the proper form for doing bench press. I did bench press for years, and I got up to like a decent amount of weight. And it just eventually I that is what I attribute to screwing up my shoulder. Like that helped with what messed my shoulder up to have to get an injury. another thing is too like if you want to really push yourself, you have to find a spotter. So you have to go with someone to the gym or go bother somebody to like, hey man, can I do I know you that there's safeties that you could put on to whatever, whatever. but I just like dumbbells. Dumbbells for me, just like the range of motion you can get from dumbbells is so much more. Like, you have that you have the bar that comes, it hits you in the chest. What if I want to go b even deeper range of motion than that? What if have to concave my chest in order to get that real range of motion? And shut the fuck up. The people like they make bars that actually make it so you can't get like I've never seen one at my gym. They don't have that that weird that weird like chest Alex: Ha ha ha Aaron: one f at at my gym. So no, shut the hell up. Like, you what you could do that with? dumbbells. Dumbbells are the best, and that's what I use. And Alex: And are at every single gym. Aaron: Exactly. Every gym and every hotel. Like you you're always gonna be able to find dumbbells. I just hate barbells. I that's what's that's my main thing, and whatever people can can handle. If you listen, if you love barbells and that's what you want to use, good for you. Make your own fucking list. This is my list, Alex: Yeah. Aaron: and my list says it's number two worst exercise. Barbell bench press. Amen. Alex: The one that I've hurt myself on. So the number one for me and should be, it should Aaron: Is the lady that flaps her arms. Alex: be for everybody. Elaine at the gym. No, I was kidding. It is CrossFit. CrossFit is the number one most overrated exercise of all time. And let me tell you why. I looked up before and after pictures of people who do CrossFit. I noticed something. Almost all of the people who have like significant changes to their body already had a physical or athletic type of body. Now I don't mean that this person was yoked or like really strong, but you can just look at some people's body where like, you're an athlete. Like you've played soccer, you've played this, you've done this like throughout your life. So weightlifting was already a part of your life. I don't know a s and I I know people who do CrossFit. I don't know a single person. In my sphere, who does CrossFit, who has gone from being disgusting body to looking extremely jacked doing CrossFit. And that is why I think it's one of the most overrated exercises, because it is essentially the community side apart, which I'm sure is fantastic and if you're part of that community, but incredibly annoying if you're not a part of that community. I don't see anybody actually have actual results for that from that or stick to it. It's for whatever reason, it's one of those exercise things where people like it the people who do it and don't like get strong from it, like they ebb and flow. Like they'll come back to it and they'll leave it. They'll come back to it, they'll leave it. Aaron: Yes. Alex: Like I've been going to the gym for four months and I guarantee the person who I'm thinking of who does CrossFit has started and stopped CrossFit probably three or four times in that four month span. Because you know what's really easy about about a gym? You just go show up, there's some weights You do some resistance to your body, and then you go home and you call it a day. You have these very athletic mo movements that you have to do for CrossFit that are also dangerous for beginners, which is why I think you see people who were previous athletes doing it because they already have that coordination. So for lack of a better term, fuck CrossFit. I haven't sworn a lot in this podcast recently, but I think it's one Aaron: I have Alex: of the worst exercise communities ever created. Aaron: It's not only that, but like the sorry, to let you finish. What are you gonna say? You say something Yes. It's funny. I have a great Alex: And it's a cult. Aaron: quote for you. the the I'd say the main reason is like the level of like the intensity that they put you through a lot of these exercises, isn't great. Like I'm all about like pushing yourself, pushing yourself, pushing yourself. But there like there has to be a statistic. I obviously didn't look this up because this isn't my number one, of like injury ratio with people that do CrossFit. Because well okay, but I don't want to say that. it was something we we had on, but I I was gonna that doesn't matter. Okay. Anyways. each it it is. And like it's one of those things where you you you push yourself so hard that you get what's that called? I I I looked this up actually. it's a severe medical condition. It's r rhabdomyel miles myelsis myolysis? Rhabdom is essentially where you start like Like your body starts like eating, breaking down the muscle tissue, and that releases protein into your blood and harms your kidneys. Alex: sorry yeah, you're yeah, yeah. Aaron: So it can kill you. So that's what we're saying is if you do CrossFit, it's gonna kill you, and not in the good kind of kill you way, in the bad way. Here's a quote for you, Alex. I'll let you I'll I'll you won't guess who did it, so I won't make you guess. But the quote is the most important part of any CrossFit workout is posting about it endlessly on social media. How about you just brag about all the kettlebell burpees you did to the other wackos in your cult? Alex: Was this you? Is that your quote? Aaron: Daniel Tosh. Daniel Tosh. No. That is a Daniel Tosh quote. Alex: That's funny. Aaron: And it's not wrong. that's like the same thing about vegans. how do you know if someone's vegan? they will tell you. How do you know if someone does CrossFit? They will let you know. Alex: Man. Looking at the injury rates, like I everything that it's comparing it to is like professional sports. So it's like, it's actually way like the the injury rate is Aaron: really? It's safer than football. Alex: is way lower than professional Olympic weightlifting, Olympic gymnastics. I'm just like, but normal people are doing this. Like there's aren't normal people that are doing gymnastics. These Aaron: Yes, I done. Alex: aren't like trained athletes, anyways. Ugh. Aaron: that's hilarious. and then obviously my number one was we already talked about it is the the barbell squat, which is bunch bunch of malarkey. Don't like it, hate it, get hurt, don't do it, do something else. but yeah, I think I Alex: It's it's Aaron: think we've offended a lot of people today. Alex: I hope so. That was the goal. I like what was funny about doing this list was realizing how important it is to find something that you do enjoy doing. Cause sure there are people who love doing running, who love doing who love doing cross-it, who love doing all of these things that we say. But I'm just like, man. I used to run so much and I have been been enjoying life so much more since I started just weightlifting.
