- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to Five Minute Parenting.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Today we're talking health and fitness with a twist for little ones with Kimberly Payne.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Kimberly is a Jesus lover, OMA, and an eclectic author.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Her books boost faith, help readers face difficult challenges, and draw closer to God.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: As a mother, health advocate, and woman of faith, Kimberly is on a mission to help her readers live fuller, healthier lives.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Kimberly, thanks for being here today.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Karen.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It's a pleasure to be here.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, we're glad to have you.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: And you know, I remember the days when my girls were young and it seemed near impossible to get in a full workout.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Um, but yet we know that regular exercise is so important for us and our kids.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm just excited to hear what you have to share with parents today.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: So please jump right in.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Sure, yeah.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Well, my background is um as a personal trainer, and so I had a very strong, you know, obviously in the fitness field.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: But when I became a Christian, um, I learned that prayer and Bible study are to the spirit, what exercise and healthy eating are to the body.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So um I've always been an advocate of health, and it's hard to get children interested in activities, I find, especially nowadays.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Um, now that I've I've my two children are grown and I have my granddaughter.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: There's things that I do with her to ensure that she's you know being active when she's with me.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And there's five main things that I did with my kids, and I also do with my granddaughter now.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Um, the first one being that I make sure that she has the activity that she most enjoys.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: So when I was growing up, I played volleyball and um soccer and things like that, baseball, softball, but I never really enjoyed them.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And I thought, oh, I am so not an athlete.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And so I never really was into kind of fitness and and stuff like this as a child myself.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: But as I learned that I I'm a I'm an introvert, and the activities that I really enjoy are the single activities like biking and walking and you know, those sorts of things I can do on my own.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So with my with my granddaughter, um, I you know, I focused in what was her genuine interest, where was she interested in?
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And you know, I I learned of gymnastics, that's her thing that she likes to do.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: So, you know, that's the the the area that we pursue.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Like I know that team sports are great and you can learn a lot through them, but for a child to have a love of health and fitness, they really have to find something that they that they enjoy.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that brings me to my second point, and that is that you know, as a parent, as a grandparent, um, we need to be a role model.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I I did have my parents themselves as role models.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: My dad used to bicycle to work, you know, and my my mom took us always for swimming lessons and you know, hiking all the time every weekend.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So I think that you know it's important for us to kind of not only, you know, say that it's important, but but to show the the kids that yes, you know, we do it too.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Um, third thing that I that I I have as a tip is to encourage what I call purposeful fitness.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So again, you know, really knowing what it is that your your child is interested in, if they're kind of like interested in the environment, what you can do is maybe go for uh a walk where you clean up the street, you know, you pick up garbage along the way.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps they're very crafty children.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Um, you might want to say, okay, let's go out into the fields and pick some flowers and make some neat craft gifts, that sort of thing.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Or um my personal favorite, which I did with my daughter all the time, was going on a prayer walk.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: So we would walk around the neighborhood and we would pray for the neighbors in each house and um you know any other sort of concerns that came up as well.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So we, you know, I I like to encourage purposeful fitness.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll say to my granddaughter, okay, let's go pick up the mail.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, she'll take her scooter and and I'll walk sort of thing.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So purposeful fitness kind of goes along with the right activity, but it has a different sort of slant to it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: The the first fourth one is um, I don't know if anyone reads the uh Calvin and Hobbes comics.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: That's by far my favorite, but there's a thing in there that Calvin calls Calvin ball.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And so he makes up the rules as he goes.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And I think that that's really important for kids to have unstructured free play where they decide the rules, they get to make up, you know, what it is.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: And again, that works, you know, very well with children who have ADHD, you know, ADD, those sorts of things that, you know, it it they don't have to be put into a box, but that they can do any sort of movement and they can combine things, badminton with with floor hockey and make a game of it and and just have a lot of fun with the unstructured free play.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: The uh the last sort of thing that I and I kind of laugh about this one because I think back in the day, you know, I might have liked hockey a little bit more, um, or skating for that matter, if I had a good pair of skates.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: I uh I had some hand-me down from a neighbor, and oh my goodness, they didn't really fit, and my feet were always cold.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And so I just said, you know, I hate skating.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I don't like skating.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: But then as an adult, uh, my husband bought me some, you know, real skates that actually fit me, that were warm.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And I thought, oh my goodness, this is this is kind of nice.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: I enjoy this.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: So I think, you know, the right equipment can go a long way.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not saying that secondhand equipment is a bad thing because it isn't, it's great, especially for kids who are growing and that, but just making sure that they're that they are that they fit well and that you know they work for the child.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: You know, if you're doing baseball, make sure the glove fits them.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: It's not too small or too big, that sort of thing.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So just those five things, you know, picking the the right activity for your child, being a role model, encouraging purposeful fitness, having unstructured free play, and having the right equipment.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Those would be my tips for having a good, healthy uh childhood and and with exercise.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: This is great.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: These are great tips, fantastic ideas.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's it's not an option, right?
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, if we want to be healthy, if we want our kids to be healthy, we have to move more and we need to exercise.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: And so I love the points you've made, including the ones about just parents being an example and finding ways to keep moving with your kiddos.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Well, Kimberly, thank you so much for being here and sharing.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm gonna list your website address in the show notes.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and and listeners, be sure to check that out.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, you've written quite a few books.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Uh how many books have you written?
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Um over 20 now, but a lot of them are smaller.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: They're journals, prayer journals, gratitude journals, bible studies, that sort of thing.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: So they're a little bit smaller.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: And I believe you do have a book on um that's more uh health and fitness focused.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Is that right?
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: I have a whole series um that you know, there's fit for faith, women of strength, jumpstart, get the skinny, and healthy body, healthy spirit.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And um they all are a little bit different and tailored to different kinds of interests.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: The the get the skinny is is one that you know answers all the the questions that people might have about healthy um living and and uh all the there's so much misinformation that's out there, you know.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: And so I I yeah, I get to the basics and and uh help kind of get through those.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Well, good.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Well, again, Kimberly, thank you so much for being here and sharing.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: And listeners, thank you for joining us.

- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Until then, have a blessed week.
