Latest / Health Unscripted / Ep. 46 - What you NEED vs. What you WANT
Transcript
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: All right, y'all.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to another week of Health Unscripted with Dr.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: D.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I am Dr.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Ashley Dwyer.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And this week, oh my gosh, it's crazy saying that because we have had a hiatus, as you guys know.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And I just had our welcome back episode, if you will, from like seven months ago.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: I think my last episode was, I want to say it was September or November, but I really think it was September.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: That's just, you know, I moved to Austin.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And then what is a podcast?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: What even is a podcast?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: So I wanted to bring this back and I wanted to do solo episodes mixed in with guest episodes.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: So this is just going to be a nice little short and sweet solo episode for you guys to kind of just dive into a specific topic.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: And then I will get more guests on here and just make it more of an interactive podcast.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And I still don't want it to be any more than 45 minutes.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I like these nice little digestible pieces for you guys.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: So let me know in the comments or in the DMs if you want to jump in my DMs and let me know what you'd like to hear about, what topics if you like the show, what you'd like to change, et cetera.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Because I want to start doing these full time, y'all, and rolling these out at least twice a month.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So without further ado, let's dive into this week's topic, which is what you want versus what you need.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I think this is so, so, so important because it is so relevant to every area of life.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: But for health and fitness, I think there are the results we want versus the results we need, the actions we want versus what we really need to do, the foods we want to eat versus the foods we need to eat.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: That really, really changes as we get older, right?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Especially the exercises we want to do versus the exercises we need to be doing for functional movement and health.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So I want to really dive into this topic because I went to an awesome conference in Vegas in March called the Real Coaches Summit.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Aram.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I don't think he listens to these, but we're going to give a little shout out to him anyway.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: If you are a coach listening to this, check that out next year, Real Coaches Summit.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: It is awesome.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Um, but one of the speakers was very much touching on, you know, what I ate in my 20s versus what I ate in my 30s and what I wanted to eat versus what I need to eat.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And I was like, yo, this is brilliant.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Like this is genius.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And I do not remember who was talking about eating in your 20s and 30s.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I talk about that a lot now when it relates to your metabolism.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Like I can't eat what I ate in my 20s, in my 30s, because my metabolism is slower.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And now if I even look at a cookie, like I'll gain weight.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: That is how it's transitioned from that point of view.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: But what I think is also really, really, really important is to, you know, when we're in our 20s and when we're younger, we can eat whatever we want.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And our body's like, whatever, because we're moving more, we're generally moving more.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: So we were able to eat what we wanted in our 20s without much consequence.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Usually that was the case.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: I know that was the case for me, um, a little bit.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I did gain like a freshman 10 with the food halls and the drinking and the late night pizza, but I was doing all those things, right?
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And then when we get into our 30s, 40s, 50s, and above, we actually have to start caring about our body and what we put into it because it makes so much more of a difference as we get older.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Uh, years upon years of just compounded living takes place.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Um, our metabolisms start to shift.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: It doesn't slow down until the age of 60.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: But, you know, if we're not moving as much, if we're not putting on muscle mass, if we're losing muscle every year that starts in our 30s, you know, a lot of these food food choices can have major consequences now.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: So back when I used to want to eat a whole sleeve of Finmints when it was Girl Cookie, Girl Scout cookie season, now I need to enjoy maybe one or two at a time to quench that craving and then save the rest for later.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: I don't need to be eating a whole sleeve.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: What I need is to actually be eating nourishing food so that I feel good, my gut feels good, I'm not bloated, I'm not fatigued, I'm not dragging because we have a lot more life demands now in our 30s and 40s, especially if you have kids or families to take care of, right?
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Like you are go, go, go with your job, with a dog, with with everything, right?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So we need the energy to sustain that and to keep our hormones healthy for childbearing or just to feel good.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: A lot of people don't understand how much our hormones play into our energy and how we feel.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Um, same with fuel.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: If you're constantly under-eating, you're not gonna feel at your best.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: If you're constantly overeating, you're not going to feel at your best, right?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: You're gonna feel sluggish and tired, probably in both of those scenarios.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: So what we want versus what we need is a very fine line.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And I see very, very, very, very, very many clients who come wanting to work with teen BDN, still wanting to do all the things they want, which I hear you.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I totally hear you.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: But we need to shift more into what do I need to do to feel my best, and then make those our lifestyle choices, shift those into our lifestyle habits so that we continue to feel good and age well and just be our healthiest selves, no matter where we are in our life and what we are doing.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: So what we want can be balanced out with what we need.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it even morphs into, you know, what we need morphs into what we want.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, like for example, for me, we need daily movement, right?
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: We need weightlifting.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: When we're vacationing or traveling or doing all of that, not many people want to work out on vacation.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: I like finding gyms in different cities and going to check those out.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I like still getting in movement while I'm traveling.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So that is something I need to do.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: And it's also something I now like doing that I didn't do before, right?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I also now need salads and nutrients and you know, good foods and fruit and fiber to have not only a constant bowel movement, as you know, if you're listening to this and you travel and you're like, I haven't pooped in two days because I'm on vacation, it's because your food choices are much, much, much different and you need fiber and you need those fibrous foods.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: So what I need now I crave berries.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Like I love raspberries.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I'm always getting like a, you know, I ask if they have fruit bowls um at the table and what the fruit is.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Cause if you tell me melon, I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna say no, you know.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: But I went to a place in Dallas last week that had a bowl of berries, like raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and like done.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Order that, right?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Like I want berries, I want salads because I feel good on them.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: So eventually it will gravitate towards what you need, is what you want.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And I love that when that happens, but that's not always possible at the beginning.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: That's not always how the shift starts.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: You don't hear what you need to do, like I need to eliminate dairy because I'm actually highly lactose intolerant.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: That's not what you want to do.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: You want all the cheese, right?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Everyone wants the cheese and ice cream, but you feel like shit every time you have it.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: So why do you keep having it?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: It's just like we are our masochists in our own right, that we just barrel through the symptoms.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, can it be worked on?
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Sure, but probably not by downing an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: That's not how we slowly introduce more dairy to get our bodies used to it again, or slamming down a whole pizza.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: So we can do this in incremental ways, but that is not how I suggest doing it.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: So, what you need to do is definitely not always going to be what you want to do, but it can morph into something you want to do.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: So, right now, I talked about this on my stories today.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: It's Wednesday when I'm recording this.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: This podcast will come out on Thursday.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: So tomorrow, uh, hopefully, fingers crossed.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Um, you, you know, I talked about it on my stories, how I really want to go back to squatting and deadlifting.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Like I see that bar and I'm just like, man, I would like, love anything than to just like pull this and be able to just deadlift again.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: But that's not what I need right now.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: If I do that right now, my body's going to be pissed off and I'm likely to re-injure myself because I haven't really fully worked on the fundamentals and the cueing that I need in order to do a deadlift successfully.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: So instead, what I need to do is focus on the small movements to help me get the cues right, to help, you know, get my spine stable, take away the anterior pelvic tilts, get my feet really, you know, feet stronger.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: I think I talked about this in my stories before that my medial foot strength is not really where it needs to be.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: So my feet tend to gravitate laterally than where they're supposed to be, where all 10 toes are on the ground.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, so fixing these little things all make a huge difference in your ankle, your knee, and your hip stability and how they line up.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So we're trying to do these little things so that I can then do the movements I want to in the future.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: So, what I need to be doing is paying attention to these movements and these rehab things that I'm doing.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: It's not where I want to be right now.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: It's not what I want to do, but I need to do it.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: And so that's what I want everyone to take away from this like little podcast today is that, you know, you want to lose 30 pounds or you want to have more energy.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: You want to look good in a bikini this summer.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, we always say like a bikini body is anybody, right?
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: But maybe you just want to feel more confident in your swimsuit over the summer on your vacation, and no one's gonna fault you for wanting to feel like your best self, you know, like we all have aesthetic goals and non-aesthetic goals.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Like, do whatever you got to do, no judgment.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: But maybe that is what you're gravitating towards.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And so do you want to give up your wine every night after work?
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Probably not.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Should you?
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Probably so.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we have to do the things we need to do in order to actually get the results we want.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot of wants and needs here, y'all.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Um, but I will 1000% say you will absolutely not regret doing the things you need to do to get what you want long-term.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Do not let what you want in short-term gratification, instant gratification, cloud your long-term wants because those little tiny wants are nowhere near the giant goal that you have for yourself towards the at the end of the day.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And so if you let anything get in the way with those tiny little wants, it's gonna be it's gonna be tarnished.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: So do what you need to do, do those needs, block out those little wants and those cravings and that instant gratification.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Do what you need to do to get your long-term goal and to get you where you want to be.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Um, and you will not regret that at all.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: You won't even remember the cookie you didn't eat.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: You won't even remember the glass of wine you said no to.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, you may remember not waking up with such a crazy hangover the next day, like usual, because you said no to that, you know, extra drink or even drinking at all and went with a mocktail, right?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: So sometimes we really need to make these hard decisions.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: We need to say no in order to get to our long-term goals.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: So if you are struggling with what you want and what you should be doing, what you need to know, let us know.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Again, pop in my DMs.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Um, I do want to say that I want to remind everyone, I am hosting a macro webinar next Wednesday, May 22nd at 7 p.m.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: CST.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Do you need to track macros?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: No, no one needs to track macros, okay?
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: But if you want efficient and fast weight loss, if you want efficient and faster muscle growth, if you want to get to your goal faster, you will track macros because it is such a great tool to be as efficient as possible with your goals and where you want to be.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: That honestly, how do you budget for a house?
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: You buy or how do you how do you buy a house?
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: You budget for it, you fight you watch your finances, what's going in, what's going out.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: And then you finally get to your goal, right?
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: You know how much you need to save each week, each month in order to get to that down payment goal to buy that house and whatever you'll need for your mortgage.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: That is what you do with macros.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: You're tracking your intake and your outtake and you're seeing your biofeedback to get to your goal.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: You know how much you need to eat to get to your goal, whether that's gaining or losing.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: It's it's literally not a diet, it's just a tool.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: So do you need to do it?
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: No.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: But if you want to do it, you will get to your results faster.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: This is a short and sweet episode, y'all.

- 13:21SPEAKER_00: I will see you next time.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Ciao.
