CA, home, speculation was rife over what could have led someone

to murder the beloved Hollywood director and his other half, a

charismatic photographer and producer.

That speculation reached a fever pitch when it became clear

authorities suspected the Reiner's middle son, Nick, of

killing his parents and was further fueled by rampant

interest in his past struggles and addictions.

I'm like, I on this very channel, we, we tried to get

inside the mind of Nick Reiner, right?

We're like, what is it? Because while a prosecutor does

not have to establish a motive in order to prove all of the

different pieces of the parts and pieces of murder, usually a

jury wants to know why. Why do juries want to know why?

Because we are human. We all want to know why.

And so of course, yeah, we, we wanted to get into the head of

So on Wednesday, three days after his parents were found

dead, Nick Reiner stood before a judge in a Los Angeles courtroom

accused of their murders. The 32 year old has been charged

with fatally stabbing his parents in the early morning

hours Sunday, and his appearance in court, while brief, marked

the first time Nick Reiner spoke publicly about the incident.

He said only three words. Yes, your honor, he said,

acknowledging he was willing to waive his right to a speedy

arraignment on the murder charges.

By the way, he is likely going to waive his right to a speedy

trial as well. Just judging from what Mr.

Jackson said, this is a complex case.

This is going to need to be litigated.

There are many circumstances, lots of, lots of moving parts.

Those were not his words, but you know my interpretation of

what he said. That means that there will be a

lot of work on this. That means that it's not going

to be a speedy trial. So buckle in.

We're probably three years out from finding any resolution in

this case. Now my question at this point

is, and it's probably too early to be asking questions like

this, but I always want to know, are we going to make it to a

trial here or is there going to be some sort of plea?

Odds are it'll plea out, right, Either pleading directly to the

court or bargaining with the District Attorney.

The the overwhelming odds are that that is what will happen.

It just boils down, I guess, to what Nick Reiner believes he

might be able to get away with if if he goes to court, if he

goes to trial, I mean, if convicted, continues the

article, he could face life in prison without the possibility

of parole or the death penalty. Indeed, California does have the

death penalty, though it has not been used in almost 20 years.

It was January of 2006 the last time it was used, and I don't

see it being implemented in the Golden State anytime soon.

Rob Reiner, who had long cemented his place among

Hollywood's comedy set with his affable nature and signature

observational humor, fit right in at O'Brien's festivities

Saturday night. But according to a source

familiar with the incident, the holiday cheer that typically

forms the soundtrack to the celebration was ruptured when an

argument broke out between Rob Reiner and his son.

The source did not share details of the argument, but they say

Rob Reiner's wife, Michelle, had also attended the party.

Nick Reiner drew the attention of some partygoers earlier in

the evening because of his scruffy appearance and how

little he engaged with the other attendees, another source told

We have learned, we've learned about Romy Reiner's, I guess,

discovery of of her parents. We understand that.

Well, let's just read it. Romy Reiner lives across the

street from her parents home. The 27 year old went to check on

her mom and dad around 3:00 PM. Sunday, according to an

individual close to the situation.

That's when she discovered their bodies, the source said.

Now, this is a little detail that we've got some conflict and

I want to be as sensitive as I can to the the Reiner's family

and to their friends and everybody who know them and care

about them deeply, because this is not entertainment to them,

right? This is this is tragedy writ

large on their hearts. On the on the other hand, I

mean, this is something that we do for, for our education, our

own understanding of crime, right?

We, we have to be sensitive to the family, but we also have to

have to get to the bottom of this.

And I think that we will over time.

But the the conflicting information that we have here is

that she found her father and then she went outside and asked

the friend to call 911. And it was later paramedics who

said her mother had died as well.

But again, these are just reports from unnamed sources.

And by the way, I did see video on Brian Enten's program that

Alan Jackson had been out to the crime scene.

Brian pointed out that Alan Jackson often does do his own

investigation, which is typical. I mean, that is very, very

typical of a defense attorney, right?

You can't just, you can't just go on the police's investigation

and, and the discovery that you receive.

But Alan Jackson is known to conduct thorough investigations.

He was out of the crime scene over the last day or two.

Romy Reiner fled the home, found a friend, asked them to call

911. A source familiar with the

incident told CNNLAPDA officers arrived at the house in

Brentwood around 3:40 PM where the bodies were discovered in

their bedroom. The Los Angeles County.

It makes me wonder how big that bedroom was it if she found her

father but not her mother. Doesn't have to necessarily be

square foot house. That's a big house.

The DA's office said the Reiners were fatally stabbed, and a

report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office

cited their cause of death as multiple sharp force injuries.

Now, we don't know that. This is another one where we're

Sharp force injuries we know from studying other cases, for

Sharp force injuries can be slicey and they can be stabby.

they can be pointy stabby. So early reports that there was

a throat or throats cut may be accurate, they may not.

According to a gas station employee, around 8:20 PM on

Sunday evening, surveillance video captured Nick Reiner

ambling across an Arco gas station parking lot near the

University of Southern California, nearly 15 miles from

his family's home. He appeared to be wearing a

baseball cap, jeans and a jacket, and as he entered the

store, he was carrying a red backpack slung over his

shoulder. Inside, he begins to make his

way toward the gas station's refrigerators before pivoting

and immediately walking back out about 12 seconds later. 12

seconds later. He re enters again, walks to the

back to grab a drink from the cooler, and stands in line at

the register. Video obtained by CNN shows him

swaying and pacing slightly and occasionally glancing over his

shoulder as he waits for his turn in line.

paranoia, some kind of schizophrenia or something as

our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived

sort of mental health break, some kind of psychotic episode,

wasn't, he didn't apparently try to hide if, if all those police

officers were like staged to arrest him, then they had been

watching him for a while. And that's interesting to me
