- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Today, I'll talk about that John plays basketball against some
- 0:09Speaker 2: teenagers and finds out that George Lucas was making Star
- 0:12Speaker 2: Wars up as he went along. Meanwhile, I evict my
- 0:16Speaker 2: uninvited bird guests and complain about fast food prices like
- 0:19Speaker 2: an old man shouting at the clouds. Plus a conversation
- 0:23Speaker 2: about why negativity is so easy and why hope takes courage.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Today's episode is not sponsored by Oranges Now one hundred
- 0:30Speaker 2: percent Pulp, but first award from our actual.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Sponsor, Johnny. The long Dark Night of the Soul is over.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Let's talk about that.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Maybe maybe it's over for you, John, but I'm still
- 0:48Speaker 2: in the middle of my Maybe travails.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Maybe overselling the episode a little bit, But travail's.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Is a word I wish had survived.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I think you just brought it back.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think I'm bringing back travail's. Yea tribulation. Tribulations is
- 1:02Speaker 2: always associated with, like the end times, the tribulation, But
- 1:07Speaker 2: it tribulation. You're going through trials and tribulations, right, You
- 1:12Speaker 2: usually saw those together. You never saw tribulations without trials.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Now it's if you see tribulation by itself, it means you.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Know whatever, patology alone, Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But travails. We got to get in back into travails.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and you need to prevail over your trivails.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Yeah, some of y'all out here.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I thought of words of the day because now I
- 1:32Speaker 1: grew up. Sadie is. Sadie is, like, dude, I mean,
- 1:36Speaker 1: how many Bibles she has, and the kind of the
- 1:38Speaker 1: way her brain works is she will hyper focus. Right,
- 1:43Speaker 1: She's been hyper focused for months now, and she's like annotating.
- 1:48Speaker 1: She's she's gone through all four Gospels, the Book of Acts, Romans,
- 1:51Speaker 1: she's an Ecclesiastes, like she's going in and she's using
- 1:54Speaker 1: commentaries and writing notes and she color codes everything. She's
- 1:58Speaker 1: very artistic. And I was so I talk to her
- 2:00Speaker 1: about Bible translations and stuff. And I grew up reading
- 2:03Speaker 1: The New King James. Okay, my dad didn't want me to.
- 2:06Speaker 1: He wants to read the Living Bible. But I was
- 2:09Speaker 1: I was pretentious.
- 2:10Speaker 2: You were like, that's a paraphrase, Dad.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah, come on, dad, I think I'll I think I
- 2:15Speaker 1: think I know, I'll take.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It and make a paraphrase and I'll preach that, right.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I got it from here, guys.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I know what he meant, and I.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Think that I think that my ministry speaks for itself
- 2:26Speaker 1: in terms of the results anyway, Yeah it does. But
- 2:31Speaker 1: New King James, I realized, gave me a whole lot
- 2:33Speaker 1: of words in my vocabulary that kids my age. I
- 2:38Speaker 1: don't know if I used them all the time, but
- 2:40Speaker 1: like I realized, like you know, when I would read
- 2:43Speaker 1: other things I have, I still I will go to
- 2:46Speaker 1: this cache of words in my head that you only get,
- 2:49Speaker 1: like you perpitiation from the Bible. Yeah, it's it's it's
- 2:53Speaker 1: it's the Bible or Nothing. Sure so, And that's the
- 2:55Speaker 1: title of our next podcast, the Bible or Nothing.
- 2:58Speaker 2: The Bible or Not. The Travail of two Men. Sometimes
- 3:01Speaker 2: you need to if you don't listen, if you fail
- 3:04Speaker 2: to plan, you plan to fail in your travails and
- 3:07Speaker 2: you won't prevail.
- 3:09Speaker 1: That's right. Come on now, am I right? I don't know? Seriously?
- 3:13Speaker 1: Am I right?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Seriously? I don't know if I'm right. You were at
- 3:16Speaker 2: camp last week. That's why we didn't have an episode. Yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 2: it was your fault this time. It wasn't my big travels.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It was my fault.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I wasn't I was here, I was home. Yeah, I
- 3:23Speaker 2: had one show that weekend.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Why didn't you come to camp?
- 3:26Speaker 2: I don't know, I just didn't. It was like across
- 3:28Speaker 2: the states because I'm fifty two and fifty two yearls
- 3:31Speaker 2: don't go to camp. Dude.
- 3:33Speaker 1: We were in a cabin that slept fifty two. Okay, yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and you tell me that wasn't perfectly made for you
- 3:40Speaker 1: to come bring your white.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Feels like a warehousing situation.
- 3:45Speaker 1: No, it was awesome. Everyone had their own bed, like
- 3:47Speaker 1: their own late queens. Well, I hope so at fifty two. Yeah,
- 3:50Speaker 1: how many people were there? I think we took counting adults,
- 3:54Speaker 1: probably took twenty to twenty three. Okay, so it is
- 3:57Speaker 1: there's room play racketball in there, so there's always room
- 4:01Speaker 1: for you. It was. It was great. Actually had a
- 4:05Speaker 1: good time. I didn't really have any responsibilities except so
- 4:08Speaker 1: they wanted a camp nurse handy, So right, Laura was there.
- 4:12Speaker 1: If something went.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Wrong, Well that, how does that your responsibility?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Exactly?
- 4:14Speaker 2: You're just taking credit for that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Just driving her, you know. Sadie wrote up with the kids.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So me and Laura went up and had her own
- 4:21Speaker 1: kind of area down below. Andrew and Julie came. They
- 4:24Speaker 1: did all the food and everything. So we help with that,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and I kind of did dishes and trash. That was
- 4:28Speaker 1: kind of my thing.
- 4:28Speaker 2: We just spent the week hitting on the camp nurse creep,
- 4:33Speaker 2: What a Creep?
- 4:34Speaker 1: And writing She worked and I worked too, but sweet
- 4:36Speaker 1: her computers out.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I sure you got a lot done.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I was very productive.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Everything's about achievement with John. If you didn't know by now.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So Andrew came in one day. This was on your birthday.
- 4:48Speaker 2: This is our senior pastor.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Andrew Wor came in one day. I was in there working,
- 4:51Speaker 1: so I do, put your computer down, We're going to
- 4:53Speaker 1: go play basketball.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah, And I was like, you're like, it's been a while.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I'm ready to get hurt again.
- 4:58Speaker 1: It's been a minute.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I'm ready to hurt myself.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Because it has been about five years since I broke
- 5:01Speaker 1: an ankle. So I mean it has been since before
- 5:06Speaker 1: I was saying the last time to play basketball, didn't
- 5:07Speaker 1: mean you go out to the gym, place out eleven
- 5:11Speaker 1: one day and play a little bit. Went ou from.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I think we played racketball, but I think I went
- 5:15Speaker 1: there and shots and I don't know, it's been it's
- 5:16Speaker 1: been a while.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, we did shoots ball that were old. But that's
- 5:19Speaker 2: a long time ago.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So we're going to these outside courts in this really
- 5:22Speaker 1: nice park and he's got a ball he bought. We
- 5:25Speaker 1: go in and we're just kind of playing around, Like, dude,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I've not touched the ball probably eight years.
- 5:29Speaker 2: You know, Like okay, yeah, it all came flooding back.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Didn't that That was crazy? All of a sudden, I
- 5:34Speaker 1: hit two, three, four threes in a.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Row, like all the y are gone.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I could shoot again. I was like, this is great.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Then these two boys walk over, how old fourteen and seventeen,
- 5:45Speaker 1: oh man, both about six foot two, six foot three.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Oh boy, Andrews about what five foot two? I mean
- 5:52Speaker 1: he's in shoes. Yeah, I'm five to nine. So it's
- 5:56Speaker 1: not like yeat and they're come over and they're like
- 5:59Speaker 1: trying to hustle us. We all should play.
- 6:01Speaker 2: It was like we're not really good sandbagging.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yeah. I was like, guys, well we'll shoot. It was
- 6:07Speaker 1: like oh really, you know.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I mean, so they didn't say, hey, let's just do
- 6:10Speaker 2: they'll team up with each other. Well whatever. It was
- 6:13Speaker 2: like us against you.
- 6:14Speaker 1: They wanted to play us. I was like, dude, And
- 6:17Speaker 1: finally they they asked enough. You know, it's just like,
- 6:19Speaker 1: what this is gonna be a good story when we're
- 6:21Speaker 1: another Yeah, you know, so I said yes, and uh.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I heard you told me this story and because we
- 6:27Speaker 2: called you, you prevailed. Well, somehow we played a long game.
- 6:32Speaker 2: What peop don't understand about this is Andrew is fifty two.
- 6:35Speaker 2: No sixty two, sorry, sixty two. That's a difference.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Andrew is like top in the state.
- 6:41Speaker 2: He is in the best cardiovascular shape of his life.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Probably he's in the best cardiovascular shape of my life.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Yeah, right now.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I mean he's quick, and so I was like, well,
- 6:49Speaker 1: so immediately we just kind of whal, guys, we're not
- 6:52Speaker 1: very good and we're not you know, but okay, But
- 6:54Speaker 1: I also know Andrew short. He's also a post player.
- 6:57Speaker 1: He doesn't play outside. Yeah, he posts up on big
- 6:59Speaker 1: guys and it drives crazy because that he they can't
- 7:01Speaker 1: do anything about it. He just pushes you, you know. Now, Yeah,
- 7:05Speaker 1: we immediately Andrew stole like three passes two balls, and
- 7:09Speaker 1: we were like we went up big. Immediately They're like,
- 7:12Speaker 1: these old guys are fast. So that to feel good, Yeah,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I did for a second, and then yeah, I think
- 7:20Speaker 1: I played them for about an hour and then it
- 7:23Speaker 1: all went away.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah you said you guys went a long time without
- 7:26Speaker 2: making a basket.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, well we got them up to like and some
- 7:28Speaker 1: of their family gathered on the sidelines. It was like
- 7:30Speaker 1: a big thing. Okay, we had like a crowd music playing.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It was like this thing, and and the family was
- 7:36Speaker 1: on our side. A slow clap were really yeah, they
- 7:39Speaker 1: were like, yeah, there were dad's they were.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, they're rooting for the old guys.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Come on, man.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It's like, at some point Tom Brady became not a
- 7:46Speaker 2: villain to me. He became like like, I.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Don't know, they're not tearing his achilles right now.
- 7:51Speaker 2: He became aspirational. You go, he's running away from guys
- 7:55Speaker 2: who are trained to kill him and are half his age.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yea and our three hundred pound and he is forty two. Yeah,
- 8:02Speaker 2: go tom Brady. At some point Tom Brady. I rooted
- 8:05Speaker 2: for Tom Brady.
- 8:06Speaker 1: We all couldn't stand He's not had a stood but
- 8:07Speaker 1: ice cream in thirty years.
- 8:10Speaker 2: You got a root for that guy.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Do you know that?
- 8:12Speaker 2: I said? It's in his biography. He eats avocado ice cream. Oh, come,
- 8:16Speaker 2: that's his treat. He eats like savory ice creams. His
- 8:19Speaker 2: trainer is like, he's so he still does like if
- 8:21Speaker 2: you see him on TV now, he still looks chisel,
- 8:23Speaker 2: he looks better than ever, and you go, this is
- 8:25Speaker 2: a man who's never enjoyed anything.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Well I was. I was with it till the ice cream.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and it gross. I was like, it's like savory
- 8:32Speaker 2: ice cream.
- 8:33Speaker 1: If I'm gonna live, I want to live.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I want to live.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, anyway, go ahead, So the teen family's rooting for you.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Long story short, we got to fourteen playing the fifteen.
- 8:40Speaker 1: We were up and they too late for it to
- 8:41Speaker 1: be a short story. And literally I couldn't move. I
- 8:46Speaker 1: mean could move, but I couldn't shoot. I can't get
- 8:47Speaker 1: my arms up, couldn't. And also that ball I was
- 8:49Speaker 1: hitting all these threes with Andrew bought a girl's ball.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Oh okay, So it was twenty eight point five. So
- 8:55Speaker 1: when we were down there were playing with So I
- 8:57Speaker 1: was like, oh, no, wonder I could hit shots. You
- 8:58Speaker 1: know that fill. Oh they're playing with different now we're
- 9:00Speaker 1: playing with We have this whole games without guys, so
- 9:02Speaker 1: it's all lamps for us. Like I can't shoot anymore.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I cannot because you can't just go eight years.
- 9:07Speaker 2: It's like if you ever played with one of those
- 9:08Speaker 2: youth footballs and then you get a real like football
- 9:11Speaker 2: that you can't even get your hand all the way around,
- 9:12Speaker 2: You're like, oh, you need big, huge hands to throw
- 9:15Speaker 2: this ball properly.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and they were kind of worried that we're going
- 9:17Speaker 1: to beat him now they were feeling it. Yeah, and
- 9:19Speaker 1: so they were there all of her stuff because just
- 9:21Speaker 1: pick and roll the whole time. They called us like
- 9:23Speaker 1: white Bill Russell's is what they said.
- 9:25Speaker 2: It's so funny that they even knew who the Bill
- 9:27Speaker 2: Russell was.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and so Andrew and I was like, dude, I'm dying.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Like I had a towel. I couldn't see anything because
- 9:33Speaker 1: I had to go wipe my eyes because the sweat.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Was Like, dude, I'm dying. I cannot get this last point.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's twenty five minutes to get the last point. And
- 9:40Speaker 1: so literally I was just like, we gotta do something.
- 9:43Speaker 1: So and Andrew took the ball down the left, left
- 9:46Speaker 1: handed behind the back pass to me. They collapse on me.
- 9:50Speaker 1: No one expected the other old guy right handed behind
- 9:53Speaker 1: the back pass back to Andrew, who's open under the goal,
- 9:57Speaker 1: he shoots, it rolls around in the rim for about minutes, falls,
- 10:01Speaker 1: and the crowd goes wild. And Andrew and I retired
- 10:03Speaker 1: as champions after.
- 10:04Speaker 2: That, So rematch you.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I can't fils it was bad. Yeh, it was fun.
- 10:11Speaker 2: You beat the kids.
- 10:13Speaker 1: That was a camp experience. I mean, that's like the
- 10:14Speaker 1: old days. Man.
- 10:15Speaker 2: And now they have a story too. You wonder, I
- 10:17Speaker 2: wonder if they're telling I don't think version they're going
- 10:19Speaker 2: to tell.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I don't think they're telling it really. Yeah, I think
- 10:21Speaker 1: their dads are telling it. Yeah, that's true.
- 10:24Speaker 2: They take the love. They had to take heat at
- 10:26Speaker 2: the dinner table from the family.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Oh that was great. Crazy thing was the guys have
- 10:30Speaker 1: been recording some of it and they did not get that.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Last place they had it, we'd be putting it on
- 10:34Speaker 1: the podcast. Oh yeah, my profile somewhere. I don't even
- 10:38Speaker 1: post anymore. Gosh.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I just put it in super slow mo some inspiration.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Charriot's a fire on it.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, it would have been great. I did
- 10:46Speaker 1: tell it Sunday. It was one of those funny things.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I'm preaching on justice, but I had to tell the story.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So I just somehow, somehow, awkwardly. Well, because the Sunday
- 10:56Speaker 1: is about you can't say that. It's the proverb about
- 11:00Speaker 1: those who act like we didn't know, you know what
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm saying, And you know, kind of the Nazi Germany
- 11:06Speaker 1: folks who act like they didn't know after the fact,
- 11:08Speaker 1: you know, and how God knows if you knew or not,
- 11:10Speaker 1: those kinds of things. I was like, you know, the
- 11:12Speaker 1: one thing the boys can't say is that they didn't.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Know because we told that's how you drew it into.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I was like, and the guy people looked at me
- 11:17Speaker 1: like crickets. Yeah, guys, you know, I just want to
- 11:19Speaker 1: tell you yeah, I just want to tell that story.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Anyway, these kids were Nazis turning your Bible. Go ahead,
- 11:27Speaker 2: let's go to proverbs. John That was you know what's
- 11:30Speaker 2: inspirational to me? Though? What's that advertisers? Oh yeah, not really,
- 11:35Speaker 2: but we do appreciate them and they keep us, help
- 11:37Speaker 2: us keep the show going, and we appreciate them for that.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Let's take a minute, Johnny, you are a few words
- 11:42Speaker 2: from our find sponsors.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Well, we missed you, and also happy birthday.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I know we called you there, we did. I appreciate that.
- 11:57Speaker 2: That was very nice. Yeah, I'm old, really old. I
- 12:02Speaker 2: have a couple of things, a little bits of news
- 12:05Speaker 2: before we do the segments of the show. I have, Well,
- 12:09Speaker 2: i have Johnny and Friends tonight, but it's too late
- 12:11Speaker 2: for people to get tickets to that, and I think
- 12:13Speaker 2: it's sold out anyway. But I'm doing that my local show.
- 12:17Speaker 2: But I'm doing the opera again next Wednesday. Oh wow,
- 12:22Speaker 2: they invited me last minute, so that's really cool, pretty cool.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And for the listeners July eighth, and the.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Tickets are available on my website johnnyw dot com. The
- 12:31Speaker 2: other thing that's news is we are planning tentatively to
- 12:38Speaker 2: add a second show to my BJU show because the
- 12:41Speaker 2: first one sold out so fast.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Nice.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like seve hundred and fifty seats theater in
- 12:46Speaker 2: BJU Theater in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is my hometown. So
- 12:48Speaker 2: we sold it out so fast and we're sixty days
- 12:53Speaker 2: out from the date August twenty ninth. But we're thinking
- 12:55Speaker 2: of adding a matinee and just taping, like trying to
- 12:59Speaker 2: tape new special get us a new content so that
- 13:04Speaker 2: by the time this goes live, that ticket link should
- 13:06Speaker 2: be up on my website. Go look for it. If
- 13:07Speaker 2: it's not there, that means I have pulled the plug
- 13:10Speaker 2: on it. But I think it's happening. That's why I
- 13:12Speaker 2: say tentatively. But with the first the second show is
- 13:15Speaker 2: definitely happening. The seven o'clock show is just that it's
- 13:16Speaker 2: sold out, but I know some more people wanted tickets
- 13:19Speaker 2: to that because it was a lot of demand for
- 13:20Speaker 2: those tickets. I was so surprised when it sold out.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I'm never I'm never like, well, of course it's sold out.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I'm amazing. I'm like what, I couldn't believe it.
- 13:27Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 13:27Speaker 2: So I'm very excited, and we're going to try to
- 13:29Speaker 2: fill up another one. So there'll be a hard full
- 13:32Speaker 2: court press speaking of basketball term, so we have full
- 13:34Speaker 2: court press to try to sell those seven hundred tickets
- 13:38Speaker 2: to the mattin a show if it happened, So look
- 13:41Speaker 2: for those tickets. Tell a friend come to Knoxville and
- 13:43Speaker 2: see me record my new special.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Johnny w j O NNIW dot.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Com dot com, August twenty nine, and we love you. Yeah, John,
- 13:52Speaker 2: let's do your segment.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's my it's my segment. We call what they
- 13:55Speaker 1: talked about that William Lonsdale Watkinson born in eighteen thirty eight, English,
- 14:17Speaker 1: Wesleyan Methodist minister, editor and prolific author. Yeah, I think
- 14:21Speaker 1: i'd call him Lonnie.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he likes Lonnie.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Yeah, sounds like a guy from England would like that.
- 14:27Speaker 1: He says, but denunciatry rhetoric is so much easier and
- 14:34Speaker 1: cheaper than good works and proves a popular temptation. Yet
- 14:38Speaker 1: it is far better to light the candle than to
- 14:41Speaker 1: curse the darkness. That's good stuff, denuncia tory rhetoric. I mean,
- 14:47Speaker 1: you think about a guy writing, you know, one hundred
- 14:50Speaker 1: years ago and yeah.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah, he didn't even know how bad it was. Really
- 14:55Speaker 2: good with with social media.
- 14:56Speaker 1: And so the series we're doing is called Justice and
- 14:59Speaker 1: the Proverbs, and I told the church it's something I
- 15:02Speaker 1: struggle with, is the tension between thinking and saying the
- 15:08Speaker 1: right thing and then also doing the right thing and
- 15:11Speaker 1: not knowing what all to do that you know, Lonnie
- 15:15Speaker 1: couldn't have understood what it was like to have a
- 15:17Speaker 1: device in your hand that let you know what was
- 15:21Speaker 1: going on in every remote part of the world. And
- 15:25Speaker 1: that's good in terms of meeting the need. And it's
- 15:27Speaker 1: also like really overwhelming. You don't know where to start.
- 15:32Speaker 4: And I think, and you have to choose a side
- 15:36Speaker 4: on everything, and like you said, you're getting the negative
- 15:39Speaker 4: denouncing take that's so easy.
- 15:42Speaker 2: The dunking. We just dunk on each other now in
- 15:45Speaker 2: social media, it's not even about And if you stay
- 15:49Speaker 2: silent on an issue, that's wrong too. If you go, well,
- 15:51Speaker 2: I don't know enough about it, well you should know, right,
- 15:54Speaker 2: and you should have known to speak up against.
- 15:56Speaker 1: This all that it takes, what all it takes for
- 15:58Speaker 1: evil to prevail, for good men to stay silent and something.
- 16:02Speaker 2: And that's fine, but I doubt they meant a tweet, right.
- 16:06Speaker 1: They had to come to that conclusion. You know. When
- 16:08Speaker 1: I wrote the book with Reggie on racism, it was
- 16:13Speaker 1: such an interesting like it's almost like a science experiment
- 16:16Speaker 1: of how people either view you or or you know,
- 16:19Speaker 1: think of you. After that, and somebody would ask me, like, oh,
- 16:22Speaker 1: you're the racism guy now like that, I was going
- 16:24Speaker 1: to make my whole ministry about that, and I was like,
- 16:28Speaker 1: I don't, I don't even know. No, I'm not, And
- 16:29Speaker 1: I'm glad we have civil rights activists and others. And
- 16:34Speaker 1: but it's also one of those things of like, Okay,
- 16:39Speaker 1: when could I ever say enough or do enough? And
- 16:41Speaker 1: I need to stay consistent, right, I need to be
- 16:43Speaker 1: consistent on this also that things are going to change
- 16:46Speaker 1: and language is going to change, and you know, we
- 16:49Speaker 1: really tried to get to the place of, hey, be
- 16:52Speaker 1: willing to change the way you think is what the
- 16:54Speaker 1: gospel really cause you to do? And repentance itself in
- 16:57Speaker 1: the original language is a lot about turning your mind
- 17:01Speaker 1: a different way. And I think it's when we are
- 17:04Speaker 1: not curious or we consider certainty to be almost as
- 17:10Speaker 1: important like a fruit of the spirit. I mean, I
- 17:13Speaker 1: read the fruits of the spirit of the Church of
- 17:14Speaker 1: the day is like a certainty is not in here right?
- 17:16Speaker 2: Right? It's not well, that's what social media is, and
- 17:20Speaker 2: it's what kind of politics is ready fire aim right?
- 17:23Speaker 2: You know, it's like not even don't steady yourself, don't
- 17:28Speaker 2: even make sure you have the right information. Just find
- 17:31Speaker 2: an enemy and shoot at him and then we'll figure
- 17:34Speaker 2: out the rest later. We'll figure out a narrative to
- 17:36Speaker 2: craft around it.
- 17:37Speaker 1: You know, that same idea. We learn to talk about
- 17:39Speaker 1: how the kids date these days, and it's a similar concept.
- 17:44Speaker 1: They rarely go on dates, especially in their like mid teens.
- 17:49Speaker 1: When we were kids, if you wanted to get to
- 17:51Speaker 1: know somebody then you wouldn't know her. You just know
- 17:54Speaker 1: of her and met her at school or whatever. You'd go, hey,
- 17:57Speaker 1: do you want to go to a movie Friday night? Yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 1: to dinner in a movie. And the idea was, we're
- 18:02Speaker 1: gonna get to know each other in that experience. We're
- 18:05Speaker 1: gonna sit and talk at dinner, and we're gonna go
- 18:07Speaker 1: do whatever. And if he's like that didn't go well
- 18:09Speaker 1: or that went well, determine whether you yep, second date
- 18:11Speaker 1: or not. Now they don't really start going out till
- 18:14Speaker 1: they're already like quote unquote boyfriend girlfriend almost or.
- 18:16Speaker 2: At least you've done recon There's a million things you
- 18:19Speaker 2: can do to find out and know that person.
- 18:21Speaker 1: So they're terrified to just go do the experience. They're
- 18:24Speaker 1: not the curiosity of it all, which is supposed to
- 18:26Speaker 1: be the fun part. They in fact, you have to
- 18:29Speaker 1: keep it secret because if anyone at school finds out
- 18:31Speaker 1: because of the phones, even that you were thinking about it,
- 18:34Speaker 1: it ruins. I can't tell you any kids I've seen
- 18:37Speaker 1: say you'd be like, yes, someone likes someone, and then
- 18:40Speaker 1: next day she's like, well that ended because everyone found
- 18:42Speaker 1: out about it, and now one of them is embarrassed,
- 18:44Speaker 1: and it's like it's like and I think that was
- 18:47Speaker 1: always the case with us as well, but now just
- 18:48Speaker 1: imagine that if when we went home it was all
- 18:51Speaker 1: over the digital airwaves as well. Through between our.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Fat they were talking about that, about the birth rate plummeting,
- 18:55Speaker 2: and they attributed a lot of it to that of
- 18:58Speaker 2: like people aren't having like casual sexual encounters, which that's
- 19:03Speaker 2: probably good, but it's not even that. It's like, like
- 19:06Speaker 2: you said, they're afraid to be put in any cringey
- 19:09Speaker 2: moment where they might fall in love and then get
- 19:13Speaker 2: married and guitar. Yeah, and then you know, so it's like, yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 2: of course everything is gonna like social interaction is plummeting,
- 19:19Speaker 2: so yes, the birth rate will also plummet. When social
- 19:21Speaker 2: interaction plummets, everything is going to be a cascading effect
- 19:24Speaker 2: from that.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's far better to light the candle, meaning do something, Yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 1: because like the bonfire light candle.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Some proverb like that too, that said something like any
- 19:39Speaker 2: old mule can kick a barn down. It takes you know,
- 19:42Speaker 2: fix someone special to build a barn. Any old mule
- 19:45Speaker 2: can kick a barn down, you know, and it's like
- 19:46Speaker 2: the same kind of thing. It's like it's so easy,
- 19:48Speaker 2: and I mean, and I have a lot of friends
- 19:50Speaker 2: who are like we get together and we gossip and whatever.
- 19:52Speaker 2: It's like the whole what's the great quote about average minds?
- 19:57Speaker 2: Average minds discuss h Evan, it's simple minds discuss people.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Brilliant minds or deep minds discuss ideas. So if you're
- 20:07Speaker 2: going to really have a conversation, let's talk about ideas.
- 20:09Speaker 2: But most people stay about people, and they're just that's
- 20:12Speaker 2: why we stay on this level because it's so much
- 20:14Speaker 2: more fun to talk about people. It's like, can you
- 20:17Speaker 2: believe they did that?
- 20:19Speaker 1: Just talking trash about people? Man, it's proverbs.
- 20:21Speaker 2: It's addictive.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Proverbs calls it dainty Morsels. Right, well, look there's a
- 20:26Speaker 1: party or your podcast right there, Dainty Morsels with John
- 20:28Speaker 1: Johns dot com. Because it's it does it tastes good
- 20:32Speaker 1: right to God to have something negative to say, yeah, yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 1: it feels like you have Well, it's it's control and
- 20:39Speaker 1: it's also deflection away from you.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Right, you can say, like I can make this person
- 20:43Speaker 2: a little bite sized thing and I can rule, I
- 20:45Speaker 2: can lord over that. Well, at least I'm not that right, Like, yeah,
- 20:49Speaker 2: it's a it's fascinating, but yeah, it's way easier. And
- 20:51Speaker 2: we see that with mud slinging and politics and all that,
- 20:53Speaker 2: because it's just wayser to denounce and create a boogeyman
- 20:57Speaker 2: that we all can agree as a boogeyman versus like,
- 21:00Speaker 2: what are we building? Right, You'll be judged by what
- 21:02Speaker 2: you build in the end. I hope, I hope We're
- 21:04Speaker 2: not going to have all generation. It's like, look at
- 21:06Speaker 2: all this stuff and you tore down what a great dude? Like,
- 21:09Speaker 2: I hope we're literally never gonna settle for that. Yeah,
- 21:11Speaker 2: as far as a legacy, that's not a legacy. No
- 21:14Speaker 2: legacies are about building.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And building requires staying put. It requires consistency. It requires
- 21:22Speaker 1: not checking out of relationships or out of commitments just
- 21:27Speaker 1: when they're hard.
- 21:28Speaker 2: It requires feel like you're talking to.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Men Nuance, Johnny, I think you know, I think like
- 21:33Speaker 1: the I think the you know, the thing I told
- 21:36Speaker 1: the church on in terms of matters of justice or
- 21:39Speaker 1: fairness or poverty and things that we affect. So one
- 21:44Speaker 1: like you got to find your compassion again. We read
- 21:46Speaker 1: a lot about Jesus who had compassion on the people.
- 21:48Speaker 1: They look like sheep without a shepherd, and they were harassed,
- 21:50Speaker 1: and they were you know, he saw them, and or
- 21:54Speaker 1: the blind man who was crying out for help and
- 21:56Speaker 1: everyone told him to be quiet and shut up, and
- 21:59Speaker 1: Jesus heard him. It's noticing with these phones in our hands,
- 22:02Speaker 1: it's noticing.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Just looking up. Yeah, somebody said that at the other day.
- 22:06Speaker 2: They were like, the greatest gift you can give someone
- 22:08Speaker 2: nowadays is attention. Your attention, your attention, because we have
- 22:14Speaker 2: so many distractions for our time and so many it's
- 22:16Speaker 2: so splintered. All of our attention span is so splintered. Yeah,
- 22:19Speaker 2: it's good. Yeah, John, let's do my segments. Let's start
- 22:23Speaker 2: with old jokes. We call it joke about that John.
- 22:31Speaker 2: My wife yelled from upstairs and asked, do you ever
- 22:33Speaker 2: get a shooting pain across your body like someone's got
- 22:35Speaker 2: a voodoo do all of you and they're stabbing it?
- 22:37Speaker 2: I said no. She said, how about now you know
- 22:43Speaker 2: what's coming because it's happened to You've had that conversation, John,
- 22:47Speaker 2: John as he watched his mother trying on a new
- 22:51Speaker 2: fur coat, Little Johnny remarked, Mom, do you realize this
- 22:53Speaker 2: coat is the result of the terrible suffering of a poor,
- 22:56Speaker 2: unfortunate animal. The mother looked sternly at little Johnny and said,
- 22:59Speaker 2: how can you speak that way about your own father?
- 23:03Speaker 2: That's good these jokes have a similar tone. I think. Finally,
- 23:07Speaker 2: John Twson, you'll like this one. Two psychologists walk out
- 23:10Speaker 2: of a bar. After walking a while, they see a
- 23:12Speaker 2: man lying on the sidewalk. He's unconscious, badly beaten, bleeding
- 23:15Speaker 2: onto the street. It's clear he's been attacked. One of
- 23:17Speaker 2: the psychologists looks the other alarmed and says, dear God,
- 23:20Speaker 2: we need to find the man that did this. He
- 23:21Speaker 2: clearly needs our help. Psychologists taking ahead on that one.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Not a psychologist, and we appreciate our psychologist listeners. Yes
- 23:34Speaker 2: out there, We sure you're doing a lot of good.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And John will be at his three pm appointment today. Yes, yes, please, John,
- 23:40Speaker 2: Let's do this week in history to close the show.
- 23:42Speaker 2: We call it talk about then, John? Did you know?
- 23:49Speaker 2: This week? Eighteen seventy four, the first US zoo opened
- 23:54Speaker 2: the Depth the Philadelphia Zoological Society. Open admission was just
- 24:00Speaker 2: twenty five cents, and it housed a thousand animals. There
- 24:03Speaker 2: were the picture of it, and it literally.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Was a house. It was a house.
- 24:07Speaker 2: It housed a thousand animals, including buffalo, deer, wolves, fox, foxes, bears, monkeys,
- 24:12Speaker 2: sixty seven bird species, and fifteen reptiles. I don't know
- 24:17Speaker 2: how they kept all this from Maybe there was maybe
- 24:20Speaker 2: these the yards.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Only fifteen reptiles in a house of a thousand animals,
- 24:24Speaker 1: I'm telling you what, what are the other animals?
- 24:26Speaker 2: They had to be a ranch because the picture had
- 24:29Speaker 2: a picture of like a house, so it must have
- 24:31Speaker 2: had like there's property behind the house that where they
- 24:33Speaker 2: kept because you can't put buffalo in a house with
- 24:36Speaker 2: a reptile. I don't know what you did. Buffalo and
- 24:39Speaker 2: a reptile, sixty seven birds walking around. I mean, it's
- 24:42Speaker 2: just crazy.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:43Speaker 2: By the way, my birds are back, you know, and
- 24:46Speaker 2: you're gonna be in trouble. Hey now, hey, now, my
- 24:47Speaker 2: birds are back. No, we've talked before on the show.
- 24:50Speaker 2: But I have a little ledge under my As you
- 24:53Speaker 2: walk into my front door, and there's a ledge there,
- 24:55Speaker 2: and birds just they the word is out. The bird
- 24:58Speaker 2: is the word, and the word is out, and they
- 25:01Speaker 2: know that this is the place to build a net
- 25:03Speaker 2: every season, and then if we don't get to it
- 25:05Speaker 2: soon enough, they lay eggs. And now I'm not going
- 25:07Speaker 2: to kill the babies. I'm not moving this nest, and
- 25:11Speaker 2: so we have to wait it out. And I'm telling you,
- 25:13Speaker 2: they come in and they fly, and then the poop, John,
- 25:16Speaker 2: the poop Amazon packages are just getting People are scared
- 25:19Speaker 2: to come to my front door, so I send them
- 25:21Speaker 2: to the garage. Anyway, Curry took down the nest today.
- 25:25Speaker 2: She said it was empty. I climbed the ladder. It
- 25:27Speaker 2: was empty. I took it down. I think we're good.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I go. She goes, no eggs, everything's good. I go.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Or she just wants you to think that, oh she's
- 25:36Speaker 1: a little squeamish one.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Well, no, I mean my wife at this point is
- 25:39Speaker 2: volunteering every day at the Humane Society. She's going to
- 25:42Speaker 2: the dog shelter, like walking dogs in the heat. Let's
- 25:46Speaker 2: just cover for her bird birds, to get the birds
- 25:49Speaker 2: out of there. She's feeding these birds to these dogs
- 25:52Speaker 2: as a snack. We're on to you, Curry. It's diabolical,
- 25:55Speaker 2: it is. It's the perfect crime. John. This week, nineteen
- 25:59Speaker 2: sixty two, the future retail giant Walmart opens its first store,
- 26:04Speaker 2: Walmart Discount City in Rogers, Arkansas. It was started by
- 26:08Speaker 2: Sam Walton, of course, who had previous success with his Bentonville,
- 26:11Speaker 2: Arkansas five and dimes store, and that five and dime store,
- 26:15Speaker 2: I believe is still in Bentonville. Like it's a museum
- 26:18Speaker 2: basically the first kind of Walmart like thing Bentonville. I
- 26:23Speaker 2: don't know if you've been to Bentonville, but I think
- 26:24Speaker 2: we talked about it when I did a comedy club
- 26:26Speaker 2: in Lowell, which is the nearby town.
- 26:27Speaker 1: They have redone the whole city, basically in the belt area.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Well, the story that I heard was that the family
- 26:33Speaker 2: after Sam Walton died, they inherited so much money that
- 26:35Speaker 2: it was either pay this billions of dollars in capital
- 26:38Speaker 2: gains or you could reinvest it, and they reinvested it
- 26:41Speaker 2: in the town. And so Bentonville is now this like
- 26:45Speaker 2: go to place. People vacation there because it has like
- 26:48Speaker 2: the most biking trails of any major American city. It's
- 26:53Speaker 2: got an art museum that is free to attend. It's
- 26:57Speaker 2: called the Crystal Rivers Art Museum, I think American reseum.
- 27:00Speaker 2: It has a billion dollars of heart in it. Wow,
- 27:03Speaker 2: all American art, and uh, it's an incredible place. So
- 27:06Speaker 2: Bennville's like this course and of course there's a million
- 27:08Speaker 2: places where you get Uh there is an airport. Yeah,
- 27:12Speaker 2: there's an airport like just south of there. But it's
- 27:14Speaker 2: not like it's not it's an international but it's you know,
- 27:16Speaker 2: it's not a direct from here. But anyway, it's like
- 27:19Speaker 2: one of those things where there's a million places where
- 27:21Speaker 2: you can get a twenty dollars Hamburger too, because it's
- 27:23Speaker 2: just what happens in cities like that. So it's very
- 27:25Speaker 2: there's no chains, it's very you know, yeah Bob's Biscuit.
- 27:28Speaker 1: House, Eastville.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's very cool place to go now. But
- 27:32Speaker 2: all that said, like the the the Waltons made a
- 27:35Speaker 2: lot of money, and I you know Walmart. Do you
- 27:38Speaker 2: go to Walmart? Are you a Walmart person or are
- 27:39Speaker 2: you one of those people that swears off Walmart?
- 27:41Speaker 1: No, And we do Walmart, but we do mostly Walmart
- 27:44Speaker 1: orders to the We let them deliver, spend eight bucks
- 27:48Speaker 1: and get it all sent eight bucks by not buying
- 27:51Speaker 1: other things there the USU you do.
- 27:52Speaker 2: But also like they go, hey, we didn't have avocados,
- 27:55Speaker 2: so here's a canal over, here's a here's a tennis ball.
- 27:59Speaker 2: This is not the same.
- 28:00Speaker 1: And I'm like, I can't believe I have people delivering
- 28:02Speaker 1: these things and they can't even do it right. My
- 28:05Speaker 1: butler died to get out of my bed and walk
- 28:08Speaker 1: to the porch. I get it. I got birds pooping
- 28:11Speaker 1: on me.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Anyway, Walmart and not a sponsor. We don't think maybe
- 28:13Speaker 2: they were, could be they're rolling back prices. John this week,
- 28:19Speaker 2: seventeen seventy six.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Okay, I know what's this?
- 28:22Speaker 2: Continental? This has got some facts that you may not
- 28:24Speaker 2: know though, That's why I included it.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Okay.
- 28:26Speaker 2: The Continental Congress voted to an adopt a resolution of independence.
- 28:30Speaker 2: The vote was unanimous except for hold on, do you
- 28:33Speaker 2: know which state they abstained?
- 28:36Speaker 1: New York?
- 28:37Speaker 2: New York, New York would vote to accept the resolution
- 28:40Speaker 2: on July ninth. This was July second, so it took
- 28:43Speaker 2: them a week to be convinced. I guess. Thomas Jefferson
- 28:46Speaker 2: was selected to compose the original draft, which was to
- 28:48Speaker 2: be edited by Congress. It was adapted adopted on July fourth.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Of course, pretty certain that there were like thirty two
- 28:56Speaker 1: thousand troops in New York Harbor at the time waiting
- 28:59Speaker 1: to come. So I mean New York had some pressure. Yeah, okay,
- 29:04Speaker 1: oh wow, but that was had a lot of loyalists.
- 29:06Speaker 1: New York fell early. I mean you you've watched Hamilton,
- 29:10Speaker 1: you know, but I mean Washington, you know, defending Brooklyn.
- 29:12Speaker 1: You don't think about all these things. But these battles
- 29:14Speaker 1: were there, and then New York fell early and remained
- 29:17Speaker 1: a loyalist stronghold basically for the whole war, the whole war.
- 29:20Speaker 2: And they and they've never recovered. Yeah, they still love
- 29:23Speaker 2: a bunch of loyalists. Uh uh, Yeah, I was.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I told you.
- 29:28Speaker 2: I was in Yorktown, Virginia. Yeah, and we went down
- 29:31Speaker 2: by like the Peer or whatever, and it was just
- 29:33Speaker 2: like it's its own little historical there's a million little
- 29:36Speaker 2: places to see that were, you know, because that's a
- 29:38Speaker 2: crazy part of the war and all that revolutionary war.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Do you feel like I fought The fourth of July
- 29:43Speaker 1: should not be Independence Day? Okay, I'll tell you why.
- 29:48Speaker 1: It's the day we declared independence and then we fought
- 29:50Speaker 1: a war for like five years.
- 29:52Speaker 2: The day that we won won the war, what is
- 29:54Speaker 2: that called Armistice's Armistice Armist's Day's World War two. W
- 30:00Speaker 2: you can't remember which one.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I think it's called the Treaty of Paris that ended
- 30:04Speaker 1: the war. And I don't know what you think.
- 30:07Speaker 2: That should be the day.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I think that should be victory day, the day you
- 30:09Speaker 1: declare it's great.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Well, I think it kind of speaks to the thing
- 30:13Speaker 2: of like that set it in motion.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, they did. Also again and do what we've been doing. Sorry, guys,
- 30:21Speaker 1: start to change the date. Also. This is just something interesting.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I can't think about the declargement Independence without thinking about
- 30:28Speaker 1: Lincoln because if you read John Meachen's book on Lincoln,
- 30:34Speaker 1: he talks so much about how so much of what
- 30:37Speaker 1: Lincoln did, especially with the Emancipation Proclamation, and you know, eventually,
- 30:41Speaker 1: you know, freeing the slaves, which was a military necessity
- 30:45Speaker 1: for certain and all those things, but that Meecha really
- 30:47Speaker 1: felt like he had a that he evolved in that time. Obviously,
- 30:51Speaker 1: at the beginning it was not he promised he wasn't
- 30:53Speaker 1: going to set the slaves free in the South and
- 30:54Speaker 1: all the things, but by the end he did. So
- 30:56Speaker 1: you can debate that. Historians debated it for years, but
- 30:59Speaker 1: what we eacham really talks about is how he was
- 31:03Speaker 1: seemingly as or more influenced by the words of the
- 31:09Speaker 1: of the Declares of Independence, which is really not law.
- 31:13Speaker 1: It's not the Constitution. It's like a great like mission statement.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Really yeah, it's a statement.
- 31:19Speaker 2: They took it to heart of like allmen are creative.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Credit egal and like you can't really enforce that because
- 31:24Speaker 1: it's not it's not a litigious thing to go do.
- 31:28Speaker 1: It's just a declaration. But that how Lincoln really took
- 31:31Speaker 1: Jefferson's words to heart and kind of let that be
- 31:35Speaker 1: his guiding star.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Well, I think, well, I think it's a good document.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I don't care what you say, John this week. Dave
- 31:43Speaker 2: Thomas was born in nineteen thirty two, passed in two
- 31:46Speaker 2: thousand and two. Nice long life. Do you know who?
- 31:49Speaker 2: Dave Thomas was the founder of wendy s Hamburger's. He
- 31:53Speaker 2: was an American restaurant tour and he founded Wendy's Hamburger
- 31:58Speaker 2: restaurant in nineteen sixty nine, named it after his daughter.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I think I just watched the food that built America,
- 32:05Speaker 1: and I think that he was the first fast food restaurant.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I think to open up a dining area inside because
- 32:13Speaker 1: originally it was a walk up.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Right, you walk up, that's all The McDonald's were speedy. Yeah,
- 32:17Speaker 2: they turn around, hand you a thing from a conveyor belt.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Here's your burger, But you'd go sit on a park.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Being Before that, it was like, you know, drive through
- 32:23Speaker 1: would not drive Well, maybe it was a drive through
- 32:25Speaker 1: he put in. Because drive throughs, McDonald's refused.
- 32:28Speaker 2: To do drive interesting.
- 32:29Speaker 1: They wouldn't do it for years.
- 32:30Speaker 2: You think, now they got two lanes, you have e merging.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Everyone thinks McDonald's like, you know, spearheaded that they did
- 32:35Speaker 1: not yea, and they thought.
- 32:37Speaker 2: I don't like the two lanes in a drive through.
- 32:39Speaker 2: To you, I always feel like I have a panic attack,
- 32:41Speaker 2: thinking like is this guy really gonna let me in?
- 32:42Speaker 2: It's my turn, but he can just take it if
- 32:45Speaker 2: he wants.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I always wonder for the guy at the window. Really
- 32:47Speaker 1: then those from yeah, how is.
- 32:49Speaker 2: It not out of order? Somehow? It's a mess anyway.
- 32:53Speaker 2: The main thing about fast food, if we're really going
- 32:55Speaker 2: to be old men right now, is it's a million
- 32:57Speaker 2: dollars deep fast food. And that used to be like
- 32:59Speaker 2: fast food was the option when you did it you wanted,
- 33:02Speaker 2: you didn't want to cook, but you don't have the
- 33:03Speaker 2: money to eat out, So let's just go to Wendy's.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Let's go to McDonald's. Let's get a bag of food
- 33:07Speaker 1: for five dollars.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Yeah, now that ain't happening, bro a Wendy's like combo
- 33:13Speaker 2: is eleven bucks.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Yeah, you know we ordered Chinese the other night for
- 33:18Speaker 1: the four of us from not like an upscale, just
- 33:23Speaker 1: like a it was seventy dollars. I don't know, man,
- 33:26Speaker 1: I mean it's crazy. We're in a lot of trouble. Yeah,
- 33:29Speaker 1: can I say this one?
- 33:29Speaker 2: When I can't get Chinese food for less than can I.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Say, what's a bigger issue than that?
- 33:34Speaker 2: To me? Though?
- 33:35Speaker 1: Tiny straws, Tiny straws that just collapse.
- 33:41Speaker 2: About paper?
- 33:42Speaker 1: No, like again, I have I have a seven bread
- 33:46Speaker 1: that's good.
- 33:47Speaker 2: That's a good size straw. But you know what I
- 33:49Speaker 2: really love is the big Boba tea. Yeah, like piece
- 33:52Speaker 2: of pizza sea type. I want a straw that and
- 33:55Speaker 2: my wife at draws are crazy. I'm just always gonna
- 33:57Speaker 2: do it. I take the straw and I hit it
- 33:59Speaker 2: on the table, Yeah, and it breaks and then the
- 34:01Speaker 2: f brig straw.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I'm like, that's the straw's fault because straws and McDonald's still.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Has Can I tell you my theory that this is
- 34:10Speaker 2: going to be a conspiracy theory. I think it's true.
- 34:12Speaker 1: You heard it here first.
- 34:13Speaker 2: I think restaurants that you sit down and you get
- 34:16Speaker 2: free refills they give you smaller straws because they don't
- 34:20Speaker 2: want you to be able to Sometimes they don't even
- 34:21Speaker 2: offer you a straw because they know you're not going
- 34:23Speaker 2: to drink as much without a big straw, because you're
- 34:25Speaker 2: not able to just gulp it down. They don't want
- 34:28Speaker 2: to keep giving you free refills. A big a restaurant
- 34:30Speaker 2: that you're driving away with a cup, they're like, whatever,
- 34:32Speaker 2: give this guy.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Whatever, he's gone.
- 34:34Speaker 2: You know.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Wow, guys, huh, it's about the refills. Let me tell
- 34:37Speaker 1: you something. Johnny sees through. He sees through.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Through big Soda. They're not getting myesh, john. Finally, this
- 34:45Speaker 2: week nineteen eighty five, a little movie called Back to
- 34:48Speaker 2: the Future premiered, starring Michael J. Fox, Christoph Lloyd, and
- 34:52Speaker 2: Lea Thompson. Filmed on a budget of just nineteen million,
- 34:55Speaker 2: and earned three hundred and eighty eight point eight million
- 34:57Speaker 2: dollars at the box office. The project was initially rejected
- 35:00Speaker 2: by more than forty various studios. Wow, isn't that crazy?
- 35:04Speaker 1: Wow?
- 35:06Speaker 2: Rejected more than forty times by various I.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Think Michael J. Fox wasn't the original actors. They're pitching
- 35:11Speaker 1: him on name records. That's true, Eric Stoles. They actually
- 35:14Speaker 1: shot for like six weeks with Eric Stollson shot a
- 35:17Speaker 1: good portion of the movie with Eric Stolls and then
- 35:19Speaker 1: we're like, something's not right. Yeah, he was playing the
- 35:22Speaker 1: character a lot differently. Yeah, less whimsical more. Have you
- 35:24Speaker 1: seen that?
- 35:25Speaker 2: If you see the clips of him, you see it,
- 35:27Speaker 2: And honestly, it's crazy too, because if I was him,
- 35:29Speaker 2: I'd be bitter. He went on to have a pretty
- 35:31Speaker 2: great career, Like Eric Stills is a really real respected
- 35:33Speaker 2: artist and an actor, and he's done a lot of
- 35:36Speaker 2: like what you would call like smaller films. But yeah,
- 35:39Speaker 2: I mean, Eric Stoles had a good career.
- 35:40Speaker 1: I saw a clip the other day that must be
- 35:42Speaker 1: why of behind the scenes of Michael Jackson with so
- 35:47Speaker 1: Michael Jackson, Lord Michael J. Fox, behind the scenes different people.
- 35:51Speaker 1: They are different guys with a guitar player. And I
- 35:54Speaker 1: forgot that Huey Lewis was the principal.
- 35:57Speaker 2: No, he was. He yes, yeah, because they were the
- 36:00Speaker 2: Talent Show. Yeah, and he'd got on the megaphone. You're
- 36:03Speaker 2: just too darn loud. Yes, they're playing a Huey Lewis song.
- 36:05Speaker 2: So Huey Lewis is in costume and Michael Michael J.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Fox is practicing his solo and he is wailing, and
- 36:11Speaker 1: Huey Lewis is so impressed. He's like, is this okay?
- 36:14Speaker 1: He was like, you're doing great, It's really great. It
- 36:16Speaker 1: was really because you could tell he was trying to
- 36:18Speaker 1: impress him, because.
- 36:18Speaker 2: You know he was really playing though.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Yeah, No, he played. He played those solos. He played
- 36:22Speaker 1: Johnny be Good.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I don't know. I always thought that that he didn't
- 36:25Speaker 2: play then, but then he learned to play for a
- 36:27Speaker 2: movie he did called Light of Day. I think I
- 36:29Speaker 2: read that the other day, but maybe I'm wrong.
- 36:30Speaker 1: No, he was playing.
- 36:31Speaker 2: He was playing this.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Because he had someone working with him. The guy had
- 36:33Speaker 1: his own guitar attacker with him on it, and he was,
- 36:36Speaker 1: I mean killing it.
- 36:37Speaker 2: I was like, Wow, there's a guy who does videos
- 36:40Speaker 2: of movies where actors are playing the guitar as a
- 36:42Speaker 2: character and they look at where they are on the
- 36:45Speaker 2: fret board and play actually what the solos they would
- 36:48Speaker 2: be playing, and it's really funny. There's a channel where
- 36:50Speaker 2: there's a movie Ralph Macchio did. I cannot remember what
- 36:52Speaker 2: it was. I'm albun to butcher it. I can't remember
- 36:54Speaker 2: the name. But anyway, Ralph Macchio plays this guy who
- 36:56Speaker 2: plays in these roadhouses and he's just ripping. But the
- 36:59Speaker 2: guy's playing what he would actually be playing, and it's
- 37:01Speaker 2: over dubbed and it's just nonsense. It's just gibberish on
- 37:05Speaker 2: the guitar basically, and it's just so funny. But as
- 37:07Speaker 2: you watch it, your brain fools you. You go, this
- 37:09Speaker 2: guy's ripping.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Yeah, but I watched people do it with piano and
- 37:11Speaker 1: movies and stuff, and I'm always shocked how no one
- 37:14Speaker 1: in the room could have walked over. And it's like, guys, okay,
- 37:17Speaker 1: it's eighty eight keys. If it's it's got to be low.
- 37:21Speaker 1: It's up here, it's got to be high. If he's
- 37:23Speaker 1: playing in the middle and it's high, yeah, I mean,
- 37:25Speaker 1: surely you can tell he's not playing.
- 37:27Speaker 2: What about Tom Hanks and Robert Loja and big when
- 37:29Speaker 2: they're doing the thing on the big rollout keyboard, do
- 37:31Speaker 2: you really do you have some continuity issues there. When
- 37:33Speaker 2: they do chop sticks, they really did that. You don't
- 37:37Speaker 2: think that was dubbed in. I don't that was dubbed
- 37:39Speaker 2: in after the fact that there's no way they were
- 37:41Speaker 2: really doing it. We need to find out it.
- 37:43Speaker 1: We're finding out you want to find out right now,
- 37:45Speaker 1: Right now, we're gonna ask Claude, did they really play?
- 37:49Speaker 1: Did they really play? What are you gonna call that thing?
- 37:54Speaker 2: The big keyboard on the movie Big.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Big keyboard on the movie Big. I will tell you this,
- 38:05Speaker 1: Claude is just Claude is superior in terms of it
- 38:09Speaker 1: bothers me?
- 38:09Speaker 2: How all in on AI you are? I'm only in
- 38:13Speaker 2: you know it's going to take your job eventually.
- 38:14Speaker 1: No, maybe, but I'm getting older anyway by the time
- 38:18Speaker 1: that happens.
- 38:19Speaker 2: So you want to close the door behind you the
- 38:20Speaker 2: next guy's problem. Yeah, closed the door right behind you?
- 38:23Speaker 1: Wasn't Claude needs me to write it? Still you still
- 38:27Speaker 1: have too, I mean for now, claud a good. I
- 38:30Speaker 1: don't use claud to write. I used Claude to research.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Are you being paid to say? All?
- 38:33Speaker 3: This?
- 38:33Speaker 2: Be honest?
- 38:34Speaker 1: Short answer? The piano was real and they really performed
- 38:37Speaker 1: the scene themselves, but the music you hear was cleaned
- 38:39Speaker 1: up and postprit That's what I thought. So they did it.
- 38:40Speaker 2: If they had a bad note or two, it got cleaned.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Up, so their exact footsteps aren't literally producing the notes
- 38:46Speaker 1: on the scene.
- 38:47Speaker 2: That's what I had a feeling, though.
- 38:48Speaker 1: The instrument was a genuine working one. It's called the
- 38:49Speaker 1: walking piano or big piano created by.
- 38:53Speaker 2: You can get one of those. I bought one from
- 38:54Speaker 2: my niece one time, didn't you really, Yeah, you can
- 38:56Speaker 2: buy They're not that expensive. I mean, she probably didn't
- 38:59Speaker 2: have a nice version that they had. Hers was like
- 39:01Speaker 2: a little matt It rolled out.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Tom and Robert did the dance themselves rather than handing
- 39:06Speaker 1: it off the doubles for the playing, and Hanks has
- 39:09Speaker 1: proven this repeatedly, including a twenty thirteen performance on The
- 39:11Speaker 1: Jonathan Ross Show where he hopped at a giant keyboard
- 39:13Speaker 1: and knocked out hard and soul and chopsticks from memory
- 39:16Speaker 1: decades later, what.
- 39:17Speaker 2: In the world, well, then, never mind, maybe he didn't
- 39:19Speaker 2: know it.
- 39:19Speaker 1: He did do it. It's just that probably yeah, yeah, well,
- 39:22Speaker 1: and they probably did to clean up they hit a
- 39:24Speaker 1: bad note.
- 39:24Speaker 2: You're like, all right, it's take five. We're just gonna finish.
- 39:26Speaker 1: But those things lit up.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it I still think I think I think they
- 39:30Speaker 2: fixed it in posts. I don't think it lit up,
- 39:32Speaker 2: did it. I think you're thinking of more. I think
- 39:34Speaker 2: you're thinking of the Uh.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I thought it did Billy Jean video or Cubert the Catches.
- 39:41Speaker 1: The audio if you watch closely, the notes on the
- 39:42Speaker 1: soundtrack don't line up perfectly with which keys his feet
- 39:45Speaker 1: are actually hitting. The music was polished and added in
- 39:47Speaker 1: post production, which is clearly standing for a musical set
- 39:50Speaker 1: piece like this, so it's not raw footage of two
- 39:51Speaker 1: guys feet producing a clean rendition of heart and soul
- 39:53Speaker 1: in one life tape formed the choreography for real on
- 39:56Speaker 1: a real instrument. The pristine tune you Hear was finished
- 40:00Speaker 1: the ending Room.
- 40:00Speaker 2: I need to watch Big again. Uh. It's one of
- 40:02Speaker 2: those movies where in the back of the future. The
- 40:04Speaker 2: reason it made the list is because it's a movie
- 40:06Speaker 2: that I still feel like. All three of those really
- 40:08Speaker 2: still hold the hold, and I feel like even Sadie
- 40:11Speaker 2: would enjoy them.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I tried with her.
- 40:12Speaker 2: She didn't think. She didn't like Young. Okay, you gonna
- 40:14Speaker 2: try again.
- 40:15Speaker 1: We'll try again, try Big I have a list of
- 40:17Speaker 1: movies I wanted to watch for she graduated.
- 40:18Speaker 2: They could get a little creepy though, because Elizabeth Perkins
- 40:20Speaker 2: falls in love with this basically fourteen year old boy.
- 40:23Speaker 2: It's kind of it's.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Not it's weird at the end when he turns back
- 40:26Speaker 1: into a boy and then.
- 40:27Speaker 2: She's just like in her car like oh, and it's
- 40:29Speaker 2: like she didn't sit being like oh and running home
- 40:31Speaker 2: and showering right and just being like, get this, this
- 40:33Speaker 2: is gross? Am I a gross person?
- 40:35Speaker 1: That it's a little it doesn't think like Luke and
- 40:37Speaker 1: Leah kissing, and no one ever talks about it, you
- 40:39Speaker 1: know what I'm saying.
- 40:39Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, well, you know why that happened is
- 40:42Speaker 2: because in the beginning, he didn't write Darth Vader as
- 40:44Speaker 2: his father, and then Lucas Lucas Luke wasn't originally Leya
- 40:48Speaker 2: is gonna be Lay's twin. That was all like they
- 40:51Speaker 2: were writing it on the fly. So they wrote them
- 40:53Speaker 2: as love interests because they were gonna be love interests.
- 40:56Speaker 1: When did we learn about it?
- 40:57Speaker 2: Empire strikes Back?
- 40:58Speaker 1: So second movie, Yeah, the first movie, he didn't know
- 41:00Speaker 1: they were He.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Did not know he was not the plan originally was
- 41:03Speaker 2: not to make Darth Vader Luke's father.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Or Layah his sister. No, okay, so that's the whole thing. Yeah, yeah,
- 41:10Speaker 1: that's the whole point. Yeah. Like so, wow, that's a
- 41:13Speaker 1: lot that happened in the second movie.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Yeah, because if you look at the original poster, that's
- 41:17Speaker 2: the poster is like them embracing like love interests. Yeah,
- 41:20Speaker 2: like it's not like, well, here's a brother and sister yeah,
- 41:22Speaker 2: side hugging.
- 41:23Speaker 1: No, it's a So then he had to reconcile his mind, like, listen,
- 41:27Speaker 1: if I'm wrong.
- 41:27Speaker 2: If I'm wrong, some Star Wars people are going to
- 41:29Speaker 2: get onto me. But I swear to you, I think
- 41:30Speaker 2: I've seen and read this that are you gonna look
- 41:32Speaker 2: this up to chime? We're running out of time here, Leiah.
- 41:35Speaker 1: How do you spell Layah l E I A E
- 41:39Speaker 1: I E I?
- 41:39Speaker 2: Oh? Were they originally love interests?
- 41:42Speaker 1: Originally intended to be.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Brother and sister's time?
- 41:47Speaker 1: That's good wording for Clawdne and Claude is our producer now, yeah,
- 41:55Speaker 1: thinking Claude, it takes ay just pipe it into chat.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Let him raised.
- 42:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna bet. I'm gonna bet you're right, because that
- 42:08Speaker 1: makes sense now, Yeah, there.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Was a lot of stuff that they were like, oh,
- 42:11Speaker 2: because it's some of it they had to fix continuity errors. Yeah,
- 42:14Speaker 2: because like Jaba, the Hutt was an originally a blob.
- 42:16Speaker 2: He was a dude in a fur coat.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Really.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Yeah, if you watch the old the original which they
- 42:20Speaker 2: edited him out and they put Jaba in.
- 42:23Speaker 1: You're correct. Not when the first films were made. The
- 42:25Speaker 1: sibling relationship was a later decision, and the evidence for
- 42:27Speaker 1: that is baggd writing in the movies. If Lucas had
- 42:29Speaker 1: planned from the start the romantic tension between them, the
- 42:31Speaker 1: love triangle set up with Han and especially Leah's good
- 42:34Speaker 1: luck or for luck kiss Empire strikes back, Oh, would
- 42:37Speaker 1: be bizarre to leave in. Lucas himself never really pretended
- 42:40Speaker 1: otherwise in this point, But there's a genuinely interesting wrinkle
- 42:43Speaker 1: that makes the answer more than a flat no. The
- 42:45Speaker 1: concept of Loup having a secret sister did exist early.
- 42:49Speaker 1: That's what Yoda's cryptic know. There is another line an
- 42:52Speaker 1: Empire's pointing to the catch is that this sister was
- 42:54Speaker 1: originally conceived as a completely different character, not Leah. So
- 42:58Speaker 1: first draft script for Empire, Luke had a long lost
- 43:00Speaker 1: sister named Nelleth and Luke was to learn about her
- 43:03Speaker 1: from the forced ghost of his father, who in the
- 43:05Speaker 1: draft was not Darth Vader at all. They described the
- 43:08Speaker 1: plan the sister was someone on the far side of
- 43:10Speaker 1: the galaxy. He wasn't going to appear until a later episode.
- 43:13Speaker 2: So I'll just keep listening. I think if the lesson
- 43:15Speaker 2: of the show today is sometimes your first draft, you
- 43:18Speaker 2: just gotta keep rolling.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe you're gonna make a classic. We don't know,
- 43:21Speaker 1: you never know, you never know. And if even if
- 43:24Speaker 1: it involves someone kissing their sister, and even if.
- 43:26Speaker 2: It turns out that the worst person in the universe
- 43:28Speaker 2: is your father, yeah, there's still hope, right all, maybe
- 43:31Speaker 2: he'll change his mind at the end.
- 43:33Speaker 1: It turned down because he did, even though in later
- 43:35Speaker 1: movies though he was redeemed, his grandson went on to
- 43:39Speaker 1: commit the same atrocities and then eventually he was redeemed.
- 43:43Speaker 1: But could we just skip the atrocity part?
- 43:45Speaker 2: Yeah, let's guys, if we could say anything today, it's
- 43:47Speaker 2: please skip the atrocities.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I think that that that's sort of our mantra in
