- 0:00If your tremors suddenly spike or you're just having a rough
- 0:03Parkinson's day with stiffness, anxiety, or that overwhelm
- 0:06feeling, well then this episode is for you.
- 0:09I'm going to walk you through 5 surprising techniques that you
- 0:13can use right in the middle of that bad moment to help calm
- 0:16things down and calm them down fast.
- 0:18And these aren't the same techniques that you've heard
- 0:21anywhere else. These are brand new and some of
- 0:24them are going to absolutely surprise you.
- 0:27Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 0:31and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 0:35community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 0:40Well, welcome back, friends. Now, if you're new here, my name
- 0:43is Bryce, and this is Living with Parkinson's, The good, the
- 0:47bad and the reality. And this is where we tell the
- 0:50truth about living with Parkinson's.
- 0:52We share real stories and we make sure that nobody ever feels
- 0:56that they're doing this alone. And a great big welcome to all
- 1:00the new subscribers who joined up this week.
- 1:02And there were a lot of you Now. If you're watching for the first
- 1:05time, drop a doing life today in the comments so that I can say a
- 1:09special hello to you. OK, Tremor spikes, those lovely
- 1:14little surprise moments when your body like just goes like,
- 1:17you know what? Let's just make this harder,
- 1:20right? And they never happened.
- 1:21When the pressure is low, it's always when you're holding on to
- 1:25something or you're signing something or just pretending to
- 1:28be a common adult in society. Well, let's get into these
- 1:32techniques because they've helped me in real moments,
- 1:35they've helped me in public moments, and they've helped me
- 1:37in those private, you know, are you kidding me moments.
- 1:41And you know what? They're going to help you too.
- 1:43OK, technique #1 is the jaw drop trick.
- 1:47And I know it sounds weird, but stay with me because this one
- 1:50works fast. You know, research, research
- 1:53shows that when your jaws tight even a tiny bit, it increases
- 1:57tension through the nerves in your face and your neck.
- 2:00And that tension spreads throughout your upper body.
- 2:03And the more tension you have, the stronger your tremor or your
- 2:06symptoms are going to get. And when you drop your jaw
- 2:09slightly, it actually releases the tension chain.
- 2:13It signals to your nervous system.
- 2:14We're safe. And the tremor or those symptoms
- 2:17that you're experiencing right then, they often settle down.
- 2:21Now in plain English, tight jaw, big tremor, relaxed jaw, calmer
- 2:26tremor. And I learned this one the, the,
- 2:29the loud way in public, of course.
- 2:31Because you know what, I always say that Parkinson's loves
- 2:35having an audience. All right, I was at the pharmacy
- 2:39and the pharmacist handed me that tiny little signature pad.
- 2:41You know the one. You know, the pen weighs like a
- 2:44feather and the screen is designed to humiliate anybody
- 2:47who has shaky hands. It really is.
- 2:49So she hands it to me and boom, of course tremor starts spiking.
- 2:53My hand turned into a loose car part that desperately needed
- 2:56replacing, and the more I tried to control it, the worse it got.
- 3:01People behind me were watching, and out of pure panic my jaw
- 3:05just dropped open a little and the tremor eased almost
- 3:08instantly. It was like, whoa, what just
- 3:10happened here? So I kept trying it.
- 3:12I kept trying it, and it actually it works.
- 3:14So try it with me. Drop your jaw just a little.
- 3:19I let those muscles go soft and breathe.
- 3:24It really works. It does.
- 3:25So if you you know what right then if you even felt a tiny
- 3:29shift, drop a drop like a it works in the comments.
- 3:34OK, now why does this matter long term?
- 3:38It matters because every time we reduce tension during a tremor
- 3:42spike, we protect our energy, our joints, and our fine motor
- 3:46control. And those little winds add up.
- 3:49They really do. OK, let's move into the next
- 3:52technique. And this one is really powerful.
- 3:53It really is. Technique #2 is the opposite
- 3:57movement trick. Now, most people freeze when
- 3:59their tremor spikes, right? They try to hold still, they try
- 4:02to grip harder, they try to clamp down.
- 4:04But research shows that this actually lets the tremor take
- 4:07over. Instead, when you give your
- 4:10hands a slow controlled movement, like gently touching
- 4:14each finger to your thumb, your brain switches focus.
- 4:18The movement becomes the new main program, and the tremor
- 4:22program gets pushed into the background.
- 4:25Yeah, interesting. Well, how about in plain
- 4:27English? Well, your brain can't run both
- 4:30at full power. The controlled movement wins.
- 4:35OK, so a real moment. I was texting the other day, and
- 4:39my hand suddenly decided to do to do the the Macarena.
- 4:42Right? Like right then just did his own
- 4:44thing. I couldn't hit a single letter.
- 4:46So I stopped fighting it and I tapped my finger slowly, thumb
- 4:50to index, thumb to middle, and within seconds the tremor eased
- 4:54enough for me to finish the message without autocorrect
- 4:58turning it into a crime scene in there.
- 5:03Hashtag crime scene in the comments, but try that.
- 5:06That one works. So when you start your tremor or
- 5:09any symptom starting to get out of control, just start doing
- 5:12that, OK? And how about a solo spotlight
- 5:16right here? If you're doing Parkinson's
- 5:18alone, this is your moment. You don't have someone at home
- 5:22noticing your tremor spike. You don't have someone to hand
- 5:24something to you. But this technique, you can use
- 5:28it anywhere, anytime without needing help.
- 5:31It's something that gives you back a piece of control.
- 5:35So if you're solo today, drop a heart in the comments and let me
- 5:39know. OK, so which one hits harder so
- 5:43far? Drop a one or two in the
- 5:45comments. Just solely no, we're not alone
- 5:48and moving on. And the next one, this might be
- 5:51the most practical one of all technique #3 is the weighted
- 5:55object trick. Now, research shows that when
- 5:59you add a small amount of weight, even the weight of a mug
- 6:02like a coffee cup or a phone or a water glass, it gives your
- 6:06nervous system something steady to organize around.
- 6:10It changes the rhythm of the tremor just enough to help it
- 6:13settle. OK, plain English.
- 6:17A little weight gives your brain something to hold on to.
- 6:21And this happened to me this week.
- 6:22It was my son's 31st birthday. Yes, I know I don't look old
- 6:27enough to have a 31 year old son, you know, And please
- 6:29continue to keep telling me that in the comments.
- 6:32But anyway, we were at dinner and the server handed me the
- 6:36debit machine and right on cue, tremor spike.
- 6:39Right? And a big one.
- 6:40And the kind where the machine starts wobbling and you're
- 6:43praying you don't accidentally launch it into the next table.
- 6:47It's like, Oh my gosh, this can't be happening.
- 6:49So I grabbed my glass and I held it for a second, just a little
- 6:53bit of weight and boom, my tremor eased enough for me to
- 6:56slide my card in without turning it into a magic trick.
- 7:01So if you ever had a public tremor spike like that, drop a
- 7:06bin there, Bryce, in the comments and let us know about
- 7:08it. Tell everybody about it because
- 7:10the whole part of this channel, this community is to everybody
- 7:14to realize that we're not alone and these things aren't unique
- 7:17to us. And people read the comments.
- 7:20So somebody will be scanning the comments today and they'll read
- 7:23something you put in there and they'll be able to relate to it
- 7:25and it's going to help them. So you be that person today.
- 7:29OK, on to the next technique. And this one works shockingly
- 7:34fast. Technique #4 is the temperature
- 7:38reset The research Research shows that cold sensations
- 7:43activate a different set of nerves that compete with the
- 7:45tremor signal. Your brain can only focus on one
- 7:49thing at a time, and temperature grabs the spotlight.
- 7:53Plain English cool takes over. Trimmer backs off.
- 7:57So touch a cold glass of water, a bottle, the fridge door, the
- 8:02metal railing, whatever's nearby.
- 8:05I use this constantly because I live in Winnipeg and it's bloody
- 8:08cold out here. But you know if my tremor spikes
- 8:12while holding something, right? I touch something cold for a
- 8:16second or two and it usually gives me just enough control to
- 8:19finish the task. Oh, so if that's new to you,
- 8:23drop freezing in the comments. Or or move me to Winnipeg.
- 8:28No, don't do that. OK, final technique, and this
- 8:31one is hilarious but it works. Technique #5 is the visual
- 8:38fixation trick. OK, so research shows that when
- 8:41your eyes lock onto something 1 still object.
- 8:44It helps calm down the part of your brain that gets overwhelmed
- 8:47during a tremor spike. Your brain resyncs your body to
- 8:51the stillness that you're seeing.
- 8:54Plain English. Find one thing, stare at it, and
- 8:59your brain will follow. So I once stared so intensely at
- 9:02a salt taker in a restaurant that the server probably thought
- 9:05I was trying to season my food with my mind.
- 9:08But guess what? The tremor eased.
- 9:11Like you got to stare down this this non moving object, right?
- 9:16Find a non moving object and stare it down like it owes you
- 9:19money. And I'm telling you what, it
- 9:22just calms everything. Your brain just follows suit.
- 9:25It's like trying to like monkey see monkey do.
- 9:28All right, did I just call you a monkey?
- 9:30I don't know. I probably call myself a monkey.
- 9:33OK, shifting gears, it is time for Carmen's care partner
- 9:37corner. So when my wife writes some
- 9:39things down for all the care partners out there, and this is
- 9:42what she had me say to you today.
- 9:45When your tremor suddenly spikes, we see everything that
- 9:49you're trying to hide. We see the frustration.
- 9:52We see the embarrassment. We see that moment where your
- 9:55confidence dips for just a second.
- 9:57And I want you to know you never have to hide that from your care
- 10:01partner. Let us step in.
- 10:03Let us hold the cup. Let us study your hand.
- 10:06Let us give you a second to breathe.
- 10:09Supporting you isn't a burden, it's a privilege.
- 10:12And you don't have to. You don't have to do every
- 10:15tremor spike alone. Wow, that was that was really
- 10:19good. Carmen, thank you for that.
- 10:21And if you felt that, drop a big heart in the comments for all
- 10:25the care partners out there. OK, so that's it.
- 10:28Those are the five surprising techniques that you can try the
- 10:31next time your tremor spikes or you're just having one of those
- 10:35off overwhelming Parkinson days. Draw drop to release tension,
- 10:41opposite movement to give your brain a new job, a little bit of
- 10:44weight to stabilize the chaos, cold to override the signal and
- 10:49fixation to anchor your brain. And no, they won't fix
- 10:53Parkinson's, but they give you a moment of control in a moment
- 10:56where Parkinson's tries to take it away.
- 10:58And some days that's everything. Which one are you going to try
- 11:04first? Drop a number in the comments,
- 11:06one through 5, and let me know. And thank you for joining me
- 11:12today. But if you made it this far,
- 11:14you've unlocked the Brycism of the episode, and here it is.
- 11:19Here is your Brycism for today. With Parkinson's, A tremor spike
- 11:25can sometimes feel like there's a tiny intern inside your arm
- 11:28who just drank 6 espressos, panicked, and started pressing
- 11:32random buttons like he's trying to reboot your entire nervous
- 11:35system. Buddy, it's time to go home,
- 11:41Little jaw drop. All right, hit that like button
- 11:45and share this with somebody who you might need, who might need
- 11:47to hear this today. And again, just let me know
- 11:51which one you're trying first. Some of the stuff could sound
- 11:53crazy, but it actually works. It really does.
