- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to another episode of In Case of Emergency Press Play.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: This is Adrian.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Before we get into the meditation today, thank you so much for following us over to our new feed along with We Didn't Plan for This and People Be Peopling.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: And if you just found us here for the first time, welcome.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: We are so glad you're here.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: My hope is that somewhere in all of these stories, the funny ones, the heartbreaking ones, the completely what the fuck ones, you hear something that makes you feel a little less alone in whatever you didn't plan for.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: So today, this one is for the people who work with people: hairstylists, massage therapists, aestheticians, trainers, yoga, Pilates, fitness teachers, even doctors, nurses, and therapists.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Basically, anyone whose work requires you to stand close, listen closer, pay attention, care, touch, encourage, reassure, or simply be present when another human being is humaning all over the place.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Because when you work in service of other people, you don't just do the service.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: You hear things and you feel things.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: People sit in your chair, lie on your table, step onto your reformer, or walk into the space carrying their entire day with them.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And sometimes they unpack it right there.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Whether it's divorce or diagnosis, they'll talk about a terrible boss, their kid, or their mother, their relationship.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes you'll know the entire family history before you've even finished the shampoo.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And because you care, you listen.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: But listening doesn't mean you have to carry it.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So today, we're practicing something very simple: being present without absorbing.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: So when your nervous system has heard enough tea for one day, press play.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome to your practice.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Take a moment to settle into a comfortable place where your feet are on a flat surface.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: You may sit in a chair with your feet beneath you, lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet grounded, or if it's available, start standing.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Take a deep breath in, and a long exhale out through your nose or your mouth.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Again, take a deep breath in and a long exhale through your nose or your mouth.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Draw your attention to your feet.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Feel where your feet touch the surface beneath you.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Wiggle your toes a little.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Then gently press your toes down.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Rock to your heel Rock to the sides of your feet, the inside arch, the outside edge, and press the center of your heels down.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Notice the support underneath you.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Take a slow breath in and let your exhale become a little longer.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Now quietly remind yourself.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: This is my body.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: This is my breath.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: This is my energy.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Simply notice where you begin.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Grounding isn't about shutting other people out.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: It's staying connected to yourself while you're connected to someone else.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Before your first client or before the next one, take one breath.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Feel your feet.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Notice your body.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And remind yourself I can be here without carrying this.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Just a few seconds.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Nobody even needs to know you're doing it.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And when the client leaves, give yourself another few seconds.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Breathe in and scrunch your shoulders up by your ears.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: As you breathe out, release the scrunch of your shoulders and drop them down away from your ears.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Maybe shake out your hands and feel your feet again.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Mentally say to yourself, I release what isn't mine.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Because their story belongs to them.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Your nervous system doesn't need to become the lost and found department for everybody you encounter today.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Take a deep breath in and exhale through your mouth.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Feel the boundary of your body Your head arms hands Chest and belly legs and your feet.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: This is you And whatever happened, wherever you spent your day you don't have to take all of it with you.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Keep your connections and the conversations that mattered Keep the moments that made you laugh.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Know that you helped someone today.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Everything else can stay where it belongs.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Right on the other side of your boundary.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Take another breath in and a really long breath out.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: You are allowed to care deeply without carrying everything.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: You are allowed to serve people without taking other stuff on.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: And you are allowed to walk out of work completely you.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: When you feel ready.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Bring your attention back to your breath.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Back to the place and space you're in.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Blink open your eyes.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: From my heart to yours.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Wherever you are right now, take a breath.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Loosen your grip a little.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Be bold.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Listen and be impeccable with your words.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Do meaningful work and leave things better than you found them.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: We didn't plan for this.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: But we're here.
