- 0:00Oh, God.
- 0:05Oh, my God.
- 0:22Speaking of hot and fresh,
- 0:23I kind of half expected you to show up with like a bag of chicken.
- 0:26Yeah, kind of sad.
- 0:28Oh, no, I had shepherd's pie for dinner.
- 0:29Oh, nice.
- 0:30Yeah, I went to Costco today, so it was a very low effort.
- 0:35Still sounds good. Yeah.
- 0:37Oh, man, I feel like
- 0:39kind of melancholy about this episode for some reason.
- 0:42I think because we're you know, it's episode 29 of season two.
- 0:47And there are only 31 episodes.
- 0:49So we're almost there.
- 0:51And we never have to speak to each other again.
- 0:54Yeah. I mean, that part rules.
- 0:56But I'm also kind of sad about it.
- 0:59After 31 episodes, we get to speak to each other.
- 1:01We don't have to.
- 1:03That's true. We can opt in or out.
- 1:06I don't know.
- 1:06He's still got so many movies we haven't touched,
- 1:09and he's going to make so many more.
- 1:11Plus, you know, G Force to G Force three.
- 1:14Three force because, you know, the mole is going to be a recurring character
- 1:18and all of course, absolutely.
- 1:22Well, Speckles didn't like die.
- 1:24He didn't throw him in a fucking volcano.
- 1:26He was serving time.
- 1:28What was he doing at the end?
- 1:28Was he making license plates?
- 1:30Did they all say nodes?
- 1:32Nudes.
- 1:35This is a bit of a cram session for me this time.
- 1:38I just got back from a trip and had to speed run the two movies
- 1:43last night and tonight and literally fast forwarded some of it.
- 1:48Yeah, as is my
- 1:51general design.
- 1:52I got to say the oh, man, the club scene at the end of Vampire's Kiss,
- 1:56like the last like 20 minutes of it, that music sped up.
- 2:00I went back and I listened to it slow because I was like,
- 2:03what does this even sound like?
- 2:04And I realized that I think three out of four times that I've watched this movie,
- 2:08I've watched it at at least one and a half speed.
- 2:10Yeah, I can't imagine.
- 2:12I can't imagine either of these movies. Benny Hilde.
- 2:15Oh, they're pretty good.
- 2:15It just seems like such an insane way to like experience either of these films.
- 2:20Welcome to my brain, John.
- 2:21Yeah, I'm glad I don't have kids.
- 2:23I can watch movies at normal, normal speed, normal volume.
- 2:26Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:27Normal boobs just out and about both films.
- 2:31Good boobs.
- 2:32At one point, I can't remember which one it was.
- 2:34I think it was leaving Las Vegas.
- 2:37Cora like looked over my shoulder at the computer and she was like,
- 2:40I want to see Dancing Nipples again.
- 2:44Yeah, the other day when she was just staring at me and saying, boobies, boobies.
- 2:49Boobies, boobies, boobies, boobies.
- 2:52Like, what the fuck is happening here?
- 2:54There are some great things about having kids.
- 2:59Man, we went to Thunderdome today and it was fucking wild.
- 3:02It's the craziest.
- 3:03I've seen it in there.
- 3:05Kids were just crawling on the kegs and like falling all over the place.
- 3:09Like Barry got kicked in the head at one point, but was like, whatever.
- 3:12I'll still never get over the time that
- 3:17Matt's kid got bit in the middle of the back.
- 3:21Just like, how do you bite a child in the middle of the back
- 3:24and leave like teeth and friends?
- 3:28That's a good bite.
- 3:29That's a flat surface.
- 3:31Somebody with a little mouth.
- 3:33I had a kid bite me on the arm once at a Chuck E.
- 3:35Cheese. Yeah.
- 3:37How old were you?
- 3:39To.
- 3:39I was an appropriated.
- 3:40To be a Chuck E. Cheese. I will answer no further questions.
- 3:43Fair enough.
- 3:44I don't think there's an inappropriate age to be at a Chuck E.
- 3:46Cheese. I took my high school prom date.
- 3:49The Chuck E. Cheese still exist.
- 3:51Yeah, it still exists.
- 3:52They went out of business for a little bit.
- 3:54I think they had a bankruptcy issue and then somebody bought them up again
- 3:58and relaunched it because then Chuck E. Cheese was like, cool.
- 4:01Chuck E. Cheese. Oh, yeah.
- 4:03And now he's like backwards hat, like skateboard Chuck E. Cheese.
- 4:06Yeah, he's like what people thought cool was supposed to be in 1996.
- 4:11Yeah, I'm glad they're staying behind the curve.
- 4:13Yeah, I mean, at this point, 1996 is probably fucking cool again.
- 4:17So maybe they're ahead.
- 4:19Well, what was what was big in 1996?
- 4:21Don't don't Google it. I'm going to Google it.
- 4:23You you guess.
- 4:24Um, but E.R. was a cool show still.
- 4:28Probably. Yeah, you are was probably hot.
- 4:30I want you to try and finish this thought that Google has given me in 1996.
- 4:34Popular culture included.
- 4:41Gargoyles.
- 4:43Oh, probably.
- 4:44Might be.
- 4:45According to Google, I in 1996, popular culture included movies,
- 4:50music, TV shows and news stories.
- 4:53Really? Wow.
- 4:55God, I is fucking so smart.
- 4:58The English patient was big.
- 5:00Lame. The Macarena.
- 5:02That was that was a big one.
- 5:03Fuck, yeah. OK.
- 5:05Uh, hey, E.R. E.R. was definitely still big.
- 5:08Yes, you nailed it.
- 5:10E.R. was dominant for a long time in the 90s, though.
- 5:12Seinfeld Friends and Suddenly Susan.
- 5:16I forgot about that one.
- 5:17What the fuck was Suddenly Susan?
- 5:18The name sounds familiar.
- 5:19It's just a show about Susan Sarandon.
- 5:21Oh, oh, Beanie Babies.
- 5:23Beanie Babies were a thing.
- 5:24OK. Past guest Brian Kim McCormick
- 5:27sold Beanie Babies for like big time profit for a while.
- 5:31I vaguely remember him talking about that.
- 5:33Yeah.
- 5:35The average price of gas was a dollar twenty three a gallon.
- 5:38What a rip off.
- 5:39I know my my dad still would have driven many miles to go get the dollar 21.
- 5:45Slang words of choice included Booyah Word, Psych and Fly.
- 5:50Fuck, yeah.
- 5:53Psych.
- 5:56Yeah, I feel like that was a turning point in terms of like
- 5:59paying attention to what the news was saying about dumb fucking social shit.
- 6:04And then we got like the Internet and it just became that forever faster.
- 6:09Oh, we saw Bill Clinton as president.
- 6:12Mm hmm. That was one.
- 6:13Yeah. When did the Monica Lewinsky thing?
- 6:15This was pre-beige, pre-beging.
- 6:19Or at least pre-perjury.
- 6:21Also in 1996, the movie The Rock came out.
- 6:26That's right. This is a Nicolas Cage podcast.
- 6:28Boom. Bring it home, Sean.
- 6:30Welcome back to Cage, Matt Colen, around about way of meeting Nicolas Cage.
- 6:33I'm your host, Sean, here with my co-host Nick.
- 6:37Sorry.
- 6:41I'm Nick.
- 6:42I finally get it. I finally get it.
- 6:43You fuck it up.
- 6:45God damn it.
- 6:46We'll fix it in post.
- 6:47I've got him saying Nick so many times.
- 6:50And I'm just I'm Jack.
- 6:53God damn it.
- 6:54And our producer, Peter. Hello.
- 6:56And this is Cage, Matt.
- 6:59I said that we're almost done with this thing.
- 7:01I can I can finally I can soon stop pretending like I care.
- 7:05I think everyone knows.
- 7:08Yeah, we're going on three solid years of this.
- 7:11It's a lot of time spent with Nicolas Cage.
- 7:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:15I feel like I really know the man at this point, which is kind of crazy.
- 7:19Is that Stockholm syndrome?
- 7:21Kind of.
- 7:22I was I was here from I was here from the word Jiu Jitsu.
- 7:26I was in. I was.
- 7:30Episode one.
- 7:31Oh, God, you did.
- 7:34That was, you know, as a as a exercise in this process,
- 7:38I really felt like we made a bad choice.
- 7:44I don't think I can do this.
- 7:46And then episode two army of one.
- 7:49And then it all came together.
- 7:51Yeah. And then we all came together.
- 7:53Yeah. In Hayden's room.
- 7:57The only time that's ever happened.
- 8:01Well, what are you guys drawn to right now between the two movies?
- 8:05Let's get on with.
- 8:06Well, I just watched a wild at heart this morning, so
- 8:10take it off. All right.
- 8:12I am always just like
- 8:15thrilled with how this movie opens
- 8:18with just the fire and then the title
- 8:22like slamming into place like with airplane noises as it comes in, like
- 8:27as if this was going to be one of the big action films.
- 8:31It kills me.
- 8:32And then you just get like that intro with like
- 8:36I think it's like some rock and roll and no.
- 8:39And I'm still talking about the fire credits.
- 8:41Yeah.
- 8:41It'll just the fire over everything.
- 8:44It sets a tone for the film for sure.
- 8:48It does.
- 8:49Yeah. I love the David Lynch enos of it all.
- 8:52Every just like weird.
- 8:55Pause or motion like sometimes somebody just walks kind of funny.
- 8:59And I'm like, that's so David Lynch.
- 9:01I think that's my big thing with this movie is that like,
- 9:04I don't think I like David Lynch.
- 9:06So everyone's well.
- 9:08Very fair opinion.
- 9:10I mean, I watch these and I'm just like,
- 9:12I think he would be better for me in like a long, slow procedural
- 9:16like Twin Peaks if I really gave it another go.
- 9:19I think I would really enjoy it more.
- 9:21And we talked about it with Tank a little bit to where it's like,
- 9:23I really feel like I want more backstory and I know like
- 9:26who gives a shit about Mr.
- 9:27Reindeer, whatever. It doesn't matter.
- 9:29But like all these characters, all this random shit
- 9:31that comes up in a David Lynch movie, like the fast talking guy
- 9:34talking about pigeons spreading diseases.
- 9:36Like, what the fuck is that about?
- 9:38Doesn't matter. David Lynch.
- 9:40Yeah, it's just the world you're in now.
- 9:42But in like a 90 whatever it is, 100 minute movie.
- 9:45I'm like, what?
- 9:47Yeah, this is a lot is a hundred and forty minutes.
- 9:51Oh, shit. It's a long boy.
- 9:53That's a long boy. Yeah.
- 9:54I've never been the biggest Lynch fan.
- 9:58I like I love this movie.
- 10:00Like, I'm glad we saw this movie in the theater.
- 10:01I'm glad we had that option.
- 10:04Peter, you and I have had this conversation about like,
- 10:06sometimes it's good to see a movie in a place
- 10:08where you just have to engage with it.
- 10:11Totally. We went and saw Green Night right after the pandemic.
- 10:14That was like our first theater experience.
- 10:16And we both walked and Rachel, we the three of us walked out of that movie.
- 10:19And I think the consensus was.
- 10:21I don't think I liked it, but I'm glad I watched it.
- 10:24Yeah, exactly.
- 10:25I feel happy that I did that with people, but also what?
- 10:30Yeah. But and I said, like, if I had had the option to watch that at home,
- 10:34I would have been on my phone the whole time.
- 10:36Yeah, that's a good, good way to put it.
- 10:38I'm glad I was able to engage with this film for the first time
- 10:42in a theater with people because I really do enjoy it.
- 10:45And I don't think I'd enjoy it as much if I didn't have that.
- 10:49If I wasn't like locked in, if I wasn't committed.
- 10:52Yeah. Yeah, that was a really great experience.
- 10:55And I'm glad that SIF was putting on that David Lynch. Absolutely.
- 11:01I know I'm kind of sad that I missed out on that
- 11:02because I think that that would have made a big difference for me
- 11:05in that sort of like shared experience kind of aspect,
- 11:08because I think I have not watched Wild at Heart with anybody
- 11:14this entire time.
- 11:15It's always just been me watching by myself.
- 11:18And I think that I would enjoy it more with someone else,
- 11:21even if it's just going like, what? Yeah.
- 11:25Well, having somebody else to point out things
- 11:27that are just nonsense and ridiculous is. Yeah.
- 11:30Pretty, I'd say, important when watching David Lynch.
- 11:34Yeah. I just watched Mulholland Drive the other day
- 11:39for the first time.
- 11:40And what do you think?
- 11:42How did you enjoy the lesbian love scene?
- 11:45Did you watch it with your parents?
- 11:47That's how it's designed.
- 11:49No, they couldn't make it up.
- 11:50But I took photos and I sent them to my dad.
- 11:54Of the scene or of you watching the same.
- 11:57Both. I was really close to the scene.
- 12:02I thought it was, you know, good.
- 12:03I definitely didn't understand it when it made the change.
- 12:07And I was like, OK, hold on.
- 12:10Then I had to like watch it twice as hard.
- 12:13And then I had to Google it.
- 12:15Yeah. I don't really love a movie that I have to then like
- 12:18look up the deep wiki on. Yeah.
- 12:20It was so much.
- 12:22I was like, what the fuck just happened?
- 12:24OK, so what are the tiny people?
- 12:26What about the trash guy? Yeah.
- 12:30Is this a Dark Souls podcast now?
- 12:32Yes. Always has been.
- 12:36But I, you know, I enjoy this film.
- 12:39It's it's just so weird.
- 12:42It does get slow.
- 12:44It gets so slow because I feel it feels like it's just
- 12:47two different stories stitched together to make a film length.
- 12:51Them getting away from jail and like breaking parole feels like one story
- 12:57and then like everything from Big Tuna feels like a whole nother story.
- 13:00Totally. But I really like Big Tuna.
- 13:03Yeah, there's a lot of things in Big Tuna.
- 13:05It's just like a reset
- 13:08where you have a whole new influx of characters brought in.
- 13:11It does kind of have that stage set up
- 13:14where like there is kind of a halfway point.
- 13:17That is where you go out and get drinks from the intermission
- 13:22intermission and then you come back and it's like, let's all go to the lobby.
- 13:26And then you come back and then, yeah, there's a whole there in a new place.
- 13:29There's a whole there's like the end to a new antagonist in it.
- 13:33Kind of. Yeah, it is its own like separate thing in a lot of ways.
- 13:38Teeth get smaller.
- 13:39You know,
- 13:41teeth get smaller, hogs get bigger.
- 13:43Yeah. That's how it goes with Willem Dafoe.
- 13:45Ladies, just the horny just asking for it.
- 13:49Oh, my God. Bobby Peru is so disgusting.
- 13:52Definitely my favorite character and so repulsive.
- 13:54I was talking to someone recently about the foes hog.
- 14:00His troubling hog.
- 14:01Was it somebody on the on the Max?
- 14:04Because you shouldn't just be approaching people on the Max
- 14:07to talk about Willem Dafoe's wang.
- 14:10I mean, that seems like the ample place to have that conversation.
- 14:13It's an ample way.
- 14:14You've seen where I lived.
- 14:15It's kind of interesting because Wild at Heart.
- 14:18I mean, it's hard to say that anything had a easy or tough path,
- 14:23because if you're a great movie or a great movie,
- 14:25you're going to fucking slam through it.
- 14:27But it did have kind of an easy path, given the stuff it went up against,
- 14:30which was knowing Willy's Wonderland and Wicker Man,
- 14:34which like all of those are great for dumb fucking reasons.
- 14:38But, you know, it's not like a murderer's row of great movies
- 14:42that it fucking slayed to get here.
- 14:44Mm hmm.
- 14:45Willy's Wonderland, I think of those three,
- 14:48I have the most actual fondness for looking back on like Wicker Man.
- 14:52I think is great for some really specific, stupid moments.
- 14:56But like that movie sucks.
- 14:58Yeah, it's not a movie that I enjoy watching.
- 15:01There are scenes from it that I enjoy.
- 15:04Yeah. Engaging with.
- 15:06And knowing just gets weird, like great disaster.
- 15:12You were clapped, but that's about it.
- 15:15That's not knowing, isn't it?
- 15:16No, no.
- 15:17Knowing is the one where is that's the airplane one, right?
- 15:22He sees the future through math.
- 15:24Yeah. God, I hated that one.
- 15:26Yeah, never mind.
- 15:28I thought we at least got one good thing from that.
- 15:30God, what's that one now?
- 15:31The one where the Inuit between worlds between worlds.
- 15:35Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:37We're reading from Nicholas Cage's poetry book or whatever.
- 15:41Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 15:43Knowing was really shitty.
- 15:45Yeah. That was another Darryl one.
- 15:47Yeah. Yeah. Good job, Darryl.
- 15:49Because Darryl was on for Wicker Man, too.
- 15:50Yeah. But I did like Willie's Wonderland.
- 15:54That was definitely a fine film.
- 15:58The crazier the pinball dance gets, the better.
- 16:02True. Well, the sparkles.
- 16:04I think we just left alone.
- 16:05Do you think Nick Cage was just left alone in a room with cameras?
- 16:08And they were just like, we'll be back in 20 minutes.
- 16:11Do you mean he was left behind?
- 16:13I meant for the pinball scenes.
- 16:16I understood.
- 16:18So wild at heart.
- 16:21The David Lynch of it all is kind of the entire fucking thing.
- 16:25Right. Like I cannot imagine a different director doing this movie.
- 16:29Be so much straighter.
- 16:30Like, yeah. Yeah.
- 16:32Well, it would just be a like a pulp novel story.
- 16:36Yeah. Because that's really all these where they were shorts.
- 16:39Well, not shorts, but like, you know, little novellas.
- 16:42Yeah. Pulp gas station stories.
- 16:44Which I still think I would enjoy more.
- 16:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:48Just like little quick 30 minute films or whatever.
- 16:53That's episodes. Yeah.
- 16:57Yeah, I don't know.
- 16:57I mean, there's stuff like the Elvis stuff that just doesn't hit for me.
- 17:02Oh, I love the Elvis stuff.
- 17:04Okay. Convince me.
- 17:06I don't know, man.
- 17:07Nicholas Cage just goes so hard on singing
- 17:12these Elvis songs and I mean, for Nicholas Cage,
- 17:19that's pretty fucking great.
- 17:21Yeah. OK. I'll give you that.
- 17:23It is. It's so weird.
- 17:24Backflip out of the car.
- 17:26Yeah, that seems great.
- 17:28Just pulling over.
- 17:31I can't do this anymore.
- 17:33You find me some music on that radio.
- 17:39I love that Power Mad is just always on our song.
- 17:42Somewhere else somewhere.
- 17:43That is the band, middle of fucking Big Tuna, or even just Poweroren.
- 17:48Yeah. A band that never got like any real popularity, even in the eighties.
- 17:55But yeah, like, I don't know.
- 17:56There's just something about those Elvis scenes that are also just like.
- 18:05like, you guys have a real
- 18:09E energy, like big energy.
- 18:13Tell me you know this one and then just like starts it and then they just go with it.
- 18:16It's like, OK, of course, they know that.
- 18:19Well, like there's and have practiced it. Yeah.
- 18:23There are times where I'm like, this movie needs to pick a lane.
- 18:24Is it like a gritty crime drama or is it magical realism?
- 18:27Like, where where are we with this?
- 18:31Well, I think with Lynch, that's exactly the fucking middle of the road
- 18:34that he hits, right?
- 18:35Yeah, it is always kind of that like crazy magic world,
- 18:40but also like crime drama, you know, like.
- 18:43But this one is and isn't like it's I'd I feel like it needs to
- 18:48just go slightly harder either direction.
- 18:51Yeah, I mean, like all the Wizard of Oz shit doesn't really do much
- 18:55to light my candle, but yeah.
- 18:57Yeah, those are weird additions for me, too.
- 19:00But they don't it doesn't really fit.
- 19:02And it's really just there so we can have the fucking Glinda scene at the end.
- 19:07So like we can have a Deus Ex Machina poorly act
- 19:12poorly acting, tell him, you know, to like go get the girl.
- 19:17But it also gives us that Diane Ladd
- 19:20like evaporating photo at the end, which is pretty hilarious and good.
- 19:25Yeah, I do like the way they just kind of hit these mediocre
- 19:29references all the way through and then just end it with her photo
- 19:33evaporates because it got wet.
- 19:38That is pretty good.
- 19:39I do like that.
- 19:40I mean, I fucking love the performances in this.
- 19:42I think every weirdo character in the entire thing is still putting in a great,
- 19:46great job. It's like I always just love I just die
- 19:51when that old guy is vacuuming at the hotel.
- 19:55He takes those steps and then like going backwards,
- 19:58he takes little old man steps backwards.
- 20:03Very Lynch.
- 20:04Yeah, the the background characters are terrifically handled.
- 20:09Everything from vacuuming guy to the porn stars
- 20:15to the guy at the gas station, like snapping off the beat.
- 20:17Yeah. You know, just the world building of the entire of Lynch's mind.
- 20:23I mean, that's the part I might not like the structure of the films,
- 20:26but I definitely love like the worlds they inhabit because they are
- 20:30barely well realized.
- 20:32Yeah, there's a pretty good vision for what he wants
- 20:37and it's pretty consistent, I feel, with his other films, too.
- 20:41Yeah. What year did this come out again?
- 20:43Oh, 1990. God, Harry Dean Stanton just like fucking always looking fucking.
- 20:49So old.
- 20:50That dude has looked the same for so long.
- 20:54I mean, he's dead now, right?
- 20:55Yeah, he died not that long ago.
- 20:58Yeah. But he looked 44.
- 21:02So what he was 56 in this film.
- 21:05Forty six.
- 21:08Fifty six.
- 21:09Fifty six. No, ninety forty.
- 21:11Forty six. Oh, he looks like a bad forty six.
- 21:14Yeah, that's pretty rough.
- 21:15I think shit.
- 21:17Who sat on this podcast like, well, we used to be able to smoke inside.
- 21:20People used to smoke inside.
- 21:22Well, yeah, smoking inside was awesome.
- 21:24It was awesome.
- 21:26Everyone looked like dog shit all the time.
- 21:28Yeah. Dog shit and cool.
- 21:31Well, sorry. Excuse me.
- 21:33Like cool dog shit.
- 21:35Like a turd with a cigarette.
- 21:36A turd that you would definitely take home to meet your mom.
- 21:41Absolutely.
- 21:42Hey, I look back at my like at being a child
- 21:45and I think about all of the stuffed animals that my parents
- 21:50definitely bought me with like points from cigarettes.
- 21:55Like I had several
- 21:58Joe Camel plush toys.
- 22:00See, that's just good parenting.
- 22:02Yeah.
- 22:04It's not like taking your kid down to a fucking baby fight club,
- 22:08letting them bite on other kids and generally.
- 22:12Yeah, bite him in the back.
- 22:16Maybe like right on a cheek.
- 22:18Dealer's choice.
- 22:20I bit my brother on the cheek in a library when I was like sub one years old.
- 22:25Nice. Really chomped him.
- 22:27And my brother went over to my mom and was like, Peter, bit me.
- 22:30She was like, OK, whatever.
- 22:31And she looked and it was just like a full dental definition on his cheek.
- 22:38I got that motherfucker. Yeah.
- 22:41Kind of it for wild at heart, right?
- 22:42Yeah. Those are my favorite things about it is just the world that he creates.
- 22:46The yeah, the characters.
- 22:49And I don't know, it's just
- 22:50Nicolas Cage looks so cool in that snake skin jacket.
- 22:55Undeniable.
- 22:56He's got crazy good chemistry with Laura Dern throughout the whole thing.
- 23:00For sure.
- 23:01Yeah, the performances are great.
- 23:02They're weird, which is what we're here for.
- 23:06Yep. I thoroughly enjoy the movie.
- 23:08It gets a little slow, but it feels the length.
- 23:12I don't know that I have much more to add to
- 23:15this conversation that, you know, nothing that I haven't said before.
- 23:19Like, it's a good film.
- 23:20So I realized where I fucked up earlier.
- 23:23Vampires Kiss took out Between Worlds.
- 23:26So Nic Cage poetry still in play for this episode.
- 23:30Good. Yeah.
- 23:33It took out Between Worlds, Color Out of Space and Mandy. Yeah.
- 23:38This one had probably like Vampires
- 23:41Kiss probably had the hardest track of any of these movies, I think.
- 23:45Yeah, it was just all bangers all the way through.
- 23:49Right. I mean, like Between Worlds is the weakest of those, but also like
- 23:52it's so fucking weird to do that.
- 23:54Like remember this bracket so much.
- 23:56That was such a fun one to talk about.
- 23:59Like that one from the word go is so just fucking out there
- 24:03that I'm like, we're going to have fun with this. Yeah.
- 24:07Well, those, you know, relatively early on in us having guests,
- 24:09that was Gary and Rocks, you know, and like they go hard.
- 24:13So like they knew their shit with that movie and it was a lot of fun to talk about.
- 24:17Do you remember them, the the sex in the bathroom or whatever it was?
- 24:22And then he's like choking her out after they sex
- 24:25so that she can see her kid or whatever.
- 24:29Yeah. What a fucking like movies are wild.
- 24:31Can you imagine meeting up with somebody and they're like, I love to fuck.
- 24:34And it's like, yes.
- 24:35And they're like, I can see the dead, but only when I'm like halfway dead.
- 24:40And really, right edging on that line of death and life. Yeah.
- 24:45That's how fucking David Carradine died. You shouldn't do that.
- 24:48I think a lot of people have died riding that line.
- 24:51But I just like I just like mentioning David Carradine.
- 24:56Also, the guy from an excess.
- 24:58Tell me more people who have auto asphyxiated themselves.
- 25:02I mean, those are the two I know.
- 25:04I think Chris Cornell just hugged himself.
- 25:06I don't think that was a sex thing.
- 25:07Mm hmm. Same with Bourdain. Yeah.
- 25:12No, I'm sad.
- 25:14Let's talk about edging again.
- 25:16That's so good.
- 25:17Yeah, it's great. Keep riding that wave.
- 25:19No, this will be
- 25:21a man like the second I put it on in the like dumb music comes on.
- 25:25I was like, fuck, yeah.
- 25:27Yeah. Vampires Kiss brings me so much joy.
- 25:30I love the the visuals of the film.
- 25:34And going back to, you know, our conversation with Gary and Rocks,
- 25:38what Gary said about like just those shots,
- 25:41those establishing shots in the credits, you have all the traffic coming in
- 25:46and out and kind of like pulsing like blood in the veins.
- 25:49Or to your little flow. Yeah.
- 25:51Yeah, it hits really good.
- 25:53It's the subtlest part.
- 25:55My is that even subtle?
- 25:56I don't know if it's subtle, but I don't know.
- 25:59I honestly had this movie is subtle.
- 26:01Had he not said that, though,
- 26:02I don't know that I would have paid attention to that being sort of like
- 26:05a blood flowing kind of concept, but it really is there.
- 26:09Like the more I watch it, the less I'm like the more and more I like.
- 26:13I know I like when we started this process, I was very much just like, no,
- 26:16that's like, I don't know why people think this movie is so crazy.
- 26:19Like it's the acting is crazy, but like it's a pretty simple plot.
- 26:23And the more and more I watch it, the more I'm kind of like
- 26:26going down like the rabbit hole of like, wait, what is real?
- 26:30What is reality? Yeah.
- 26:32You try to pick it apart and it's like, when does the psychiatrist
- 26:36become a figment of his imagination? Right.
- 26:39Why would he ever not go on those dates with Jackie?
- 26:43Like, I know he was hot.
- 26:45She was great. Yeah.
- 26:47Because he's in the thrall. Yeah.
- 26:49Yeah, man.
- 26:50I think the weakest point of this entire movie is
- 26:54Jennifer Beals as the like vampirist as Rachel.
- 26:58She just is like kind of nothing.
- 27:00And like you can tell that they don't have chemistry.
- 27:02Yeah, she is not like sultry or like, I don't know.
- 27:08Yeah, like her just writing on top of him is not hot.
- 27:11Yeah. I mean, that kind of works.
- 27:14I run with Jackie and fucking around with Jackie was hotter.
- 27:16But yes, that kind of that kind of works for me in terms of like this character,
- 27:21because like it's a figment of his imagination
- 27:25and he clearly isn't that into himself.
- 27:28So like true.
- 27:30Even the people he imagines are like
- 27:33not that into like they're kind of bad at it.
- 27:36I mean, they clearly don't have chemistry.
- 27:37I that is true.
- 27:39Like that is part of the problem with that performance.
- 27:41But that lack of chemistry kind of works for that character in my mind.
- 27:47Yeah. I mean, he had more chemistry with the imaginary girl
- 27:50at the very end of the film, too,
- 27:53especially when she's not there and he's just like yelling at the wall. Yeah.
- 28:01Oh, I do.
- 28:02I just I love I love the fucking when he finally just fucking snaps
- 28:06and he's just like disheveled, like shuffling down the street
- 28:10with a bit of a palette, the palette.
- 28:15When he snaps those plastic teeth in and then just crawls away.
- 28:20Yeah. I'm just like, oh,
- 28:22I think what this movie does for me is no matter how many times I've seen it,
- 28:28there's going to be performance moments that will just surprise me every time.
- 28:34Yeah, I always forget about the crawling away until he does it.
- 28:39And the like frantic way he catches that like stink bug to eat it.
- 28:44Oh, yeah. And.
- 28:47The drugged pigeon he has to catch. Yeah.
- 28:53Well, it's just like, OK, because this movie was shot
- 28:56without a union crew, without like proper like
- 29:00through the proper channels, like how much of that again,
- 29:03it's how much of that is just like just let Nick Cage loose in a park.
- 29:08Like how much of this are we just not getting multiple
- 29:10like takes of or is this just a no note situation?
- 29:13Yeah, it is. I mean, it's kind of that like world of guerrilla filmmaking,
- 29:17but it didn't have that background.
- 29:19You know, it just was like kind of low budget.
- 29:20So they were like, I don't know, do this in off hours.
- 29:23Just run down the street and be crazy.
- 29:25It's like, I love that shit.
- 29:27And like, what a perfect character actor to pull into that in that moment, too.
- 29:32It's like he is the ideal like just do your thing, dude.
- 29:36Like, yeah, give us what you got.
- 29:39Like, I cannot imagine that director being like, oh, Nick,
- 29:42that's a little too much.
- 29:44You know, I don't think anybody ever dialed it back down.
- 29:47Yeah, they might be like, hey, that was pretty good.
- 29:51Explore that a little bit.
- 29:52What more can you give me?
- 29:54What if you crawled off screen like a dog? Yeah.
- 29:57No, that was definitely Nick Cage taking taking some liberties
- 30:00in the moment, I have to imagine.
- 30:04He's so fucking over the top in this movie and I love it so much.
- 30:07It's like touching the mirror. Oh, Christ.
- 30:09Oh, yeah. The way it like burns him when he touches the mirror.
- 30:12Like and this goes to like, I mean, I probably been saying this.
- 30:17I probably said this a million times at this point, but like,
- 30:20it always goes to people things like Nick Cage is such a bad actor
- 30:22for performances like this. Like, no, these are choices.
- 30:24These are amazing choices.
- 30:26Yeah. Like if you were a bad actor, like if if he were the bad actor,
- 30:31one thing he has every performance would be this.
- 30:34Right. True.
- 30:35Or he never could have achieved this.
- 30:38Like, I don't think Kevin Sorbo has it in him to do this.
- 30:41I cannot imagine Sorbo in a movie like this.
- 30:48Just Kevin Sorbo does Frankenstein's monster.
- 30:54But he does it in the most wild Nicolas Cage performance ever.
- 30:59How much do you think we can get Sorbo for?
- 31:02How much do we think we could get Sorbo?
- 31:03Do you want him to come to the the double feature?
- 31:06All we have to do is tell him that he can talk all sorts of alt right nonsense.
- 31:11Yeah. And he'd probably show up, but we'll give him a microphone.
- 31:15I wouldn't mind platforming him so we can just like fucking rotten egg him. Yeah.
- 31:20At what age does that happen to the human brain?
- 31:24A sorbofication.
- 31:26Yeah. Dean Cain went through it to Dean.
- 31:28He went fucking hard.
- 31:30When does like when does this happen to the human brain?
- 31:33Well, I think you have to be bit by a vampire bat. OK. Yeah.
- 31:37Yeah. You have to be a little bit drunk, a little bit horny, a little bit horny.
- 31:42It was also pretty horny.
- 31:44Yes, that's what happened.
- 31:46He's a little bit drunk, a little bit.
- 31:48It is the accent, the his accent in this movie.
- 31:51It's one of the better Nicolas Cage accents. It's so good.
- 31:56And that he maintains it.
- 31:57Yeah. Now, Alva,
- 32:00what's your favorite like this movie?
- 32:04Fucking rules. I know.
- 32:06What part of Alva?
- 32:08God, there's so much Alva that we just haven't even talked about yet.
- 32:11I do.
- 32:13God, do I like the masculine admission more or like
- 32:19the fact that she's just ironing clothes in front of a window with no drapes
- 32:25or with the blinds open
- 32:27and he comes with like a little packet of soup mix.
- 32:30I know just like waving it around like it's drugs.
- 32:33She's going to she's technically in a bra, but it's like huge.
- 32:38It's like, you know.
- 32:39Well, they were different times. Yeah.
- 32:41Shoulder pads were big in the NFL and bras were really weird and pointy.
- 32:45Man Alva's shoulder pads in the beginning of this film, too, are just enormous.
- 32:50That's where you get the David Byrne confusion again. Yeah.
- 32:54I guess this David Byrne, I'm not so sure anymore.
- 32:56I think my two favorite moments with him for sure are the too late, too late, too late.
- 33:04That's just like terrifying monster, but also hilarious at the same time.
- 33:08And then just him slowly like being pulled from the dead,
- 33:13just shouting her name and then running out and leaping onto her desk.
- 33:17Like, there you are.
- 33:18Credible. I mean, that's like that standing jump.
- 33:22That box jump is impressive.
- 33:23Even if you take like the athleticism out of this entire thing, it's like
- 33:26just imagine being in an office space and you hear that from like three doors down.
- 33:31You're just like, Oh, God.
- 33:33Oh, my fucking boss.
- 33:35He's going to I got to go in there and talk to him.
- 33:36And it's like, Oh, no.
- 33:38But he's like he's a middle manager, right?
- 33:40He's not like he's not he's like nothing. Yeah.
- 33:44And like he just gets away with all of that.
- 33:48Yeah. Running around in the women's restroom. Yeah.
- 33:51Like the screaming and shouting all the time.
- 33:55Nobody takes her seriously until it's too late, which I mean, that's fucking.
- 34:00That's too that's real.
- 34:02I don't I don't know why that I keep getting hung up on that,
- 34:04as if that's not a fucking real thing in this world. Yeah.
- 34:09His speech about like how he would like no matter what,
- 34:14he would always give her the shittiest job.
- 34:16Oh, that's a brutal one.
- 34:18He just cuts it right there.
- 34:20Not not an Alva scene, but just like my favorite is Nick Cage part scene.
- 34:25Just his weird inflections is when like he's freaking out
- 34:29and he's like going into his office like, Tell him I'm in a meeting.
- 34:37Yeah. Oh, man.
- 34:38No, Peter Lowe is just what a like wild character.
- 34:44I mean, it is definitely one of like the most stand out
- 34:48Nicholas Cage characters.
- 34:51Mm hmm. Absolutely.
- 34:52I mean, yeah, we've we've talked about like the memeification of him and everything.
- 34:56And it's like so many of them are from this movie.
- 34:59And like it's just such like a wild, interesting, good, bad performance.
- 35:05I don't know. It's very hard to put your finger on it because like you could look at it
- 35:08and be like, this is so over the top.
- 35:11But then you can also think about like when you're talking to Lauren
- 35:13and she was saying, like, you know, this is being opera ish, you know,
- 35:18it's these old timey black and white movies where everything has to be so big
- 35:22because of what you're producing and presenting.
- 35:25Yeah. And he's doing that.
- 35:26He's channeling something different in a weird way.
- 35:29But like it fucking works.
- 35:31Yeah. It's the modern Nosferatu.
- 35:33Yeah. And I like I do love that arc of he loves those movies
- 35:37and that era of filmmaking so much and how from as we tracked his career
- 35:42from like Peggy Sue got married and like the murder fingers
- 35:46to to this to him eventually just playing fucking Dracula.
- 35:51Yeah. Renfield was so fun.
- 35:54That is a fun one.
- 35:56I just I mean, I could just talk about this movie forever and just I like.
- 36:00I know it almost feels like it's something I want to watch again tonight.
- 36:04And it's like, I don't have time.
- 36:07I probably put it on my iPad and watch it while I drive to Portland tomorrow morning.
- 36:14Like, this is definitely one that has grown with me
- 36:17as I've watched this, like my first view, like the first time through the bracket,
- 36:21like I was viewing everything trying to, you know, from a critical lens
- 36:24because, you know, how I interact with art.
- 36:27But like as we've gotten through it more and more now,
- 36:29we're just watching the movies we like and I can just watch these films.
- 36:32My God, this movie just is so good because like the first time I watched it,
- 36:36I was kind of like, this is this is bad, but I'm enjoying it.
- 36:40Now I'm just like, now this is fucking genius.
- 36:42Yeah, I mean, it is still kind of bad.
- 36:44Like, it's still campy. It's still stupid.
- 36:46Yeah. But like overall, I think like it's not the most well directed movie.
- 36:52It's not the best music.
- 36:53It's not the perfect cinematography, but like it's fucking great.
- 36:58Yeah. All the elements come together and make quite the cosmic gumbo.
- 37:01Yeah. Well, I think if it were a bad film, there would like
- 37:06if it were truly just a bad film, you wouldn't have the little like touches
- 37:12like when he bites the woman, when he kills the woman in the club, him,
- 37:17like the little scene of him like sneaking the teeth back into his mouth.
- 37:20Like you wouldn't have had those little touches where clearly
- 37:23someone was paying attention.
- 37:25OK, those teeth like do.
- 37:28I haven't put one of those in my mouth in a really long time.
- 37:31Do does it really like extend your face as much as it seems to do to him?
- 37:37Well, it is just all plastic right up front.
- 37:40So you wouldn't like you can't close your mouth all the way.
- 37:44It's always like kind of open a bit.
- 37:46Yeah. And they definitely don't go all the way back. Yeah.
- 37:49I also didn't notice the first couple of times that she was just like
- 37:52absolutely doing coke in that.
- 37:54Oh, yeah. Back room. Yeah.
- 37:55Oh, OK. Now I get it.
- 37:57One of the random shit vending machines at a bar here in Portland
- 38:01had one of those one night and I was trying to like
- 38:04buy myself a two dollar pair of those plastic teeth.
- 38:07And the machine just took my money and I wasn't going to spend
- 38:10another two dollars on that bit.
- 38:12Yeah. Yeah. If I see it again, I'll try.
- 38:14Good call.
- 38:16All right. So what do you guys want to set in stone for this one?
- 38:18Who's the winner?
- 38:20I think it's got to be a vampire's kiss.
- 38:22Like, clearly, we're all much more like just
- 38:25enthused by that film.
- 38:27Yeah, it gets the people going, man.
- 38:30It's a good film.
- 38:31It's a great.
- 38:32By my own metric in terms of like how I've been handled in this round,
- 38:36what's the one I can recommend to anyone?
- 38:41Vampires kiss.
- 38:42I can't recommend a Lynch film to just.
- 38:47Yeah, it's not for everyone.
- 38:48Yeah. Go look at Bobby Perru's teeth.
- 38:51I feel like I think both of these films like
- 38:55come with a fairly decent sized caveat in terms of like
- 38:59who I could recommend this to or if I recommend it, I'm like.
- 39:03OK, just stick with it.
- 39:06You'll get it. You'll get there.
- 39:09Like this isn't a set it and forget it movie.
- 39:11Like I think there's going to be a little preamble to getting
- 39:15anyone invested in any of these movies if they're not already like.
- 39:19Into the idea.
- 39:20Yeah, I think it's just more consistent throughout its run
- 39:24that it is just always going to be giving you something.
- 39:29So really like sink your.
- 39:31Bite down on. Yeah.
- 39:33Nice. Well done.
- 39:34Both of you.
- 39:35Yours was better.
- 39:38But yeah, vampires kiss, man.
- 39:40It's it's a fucking banger, dude.
- 39:43Yeah, I'm glad this isn't a tiebreaker situation in contentious
- 39:46because it's 100% vampires kids for me.
- 39:49Love wild at heart.
- 39:50Love the stupid snake skin jacket and all that shit.
- 39:53But like vampires kiss rules. It's so good.
- 39:57Welcome to the final foreskin, Peter Lowe.
- 39:59Yes. God pig versus vampires kiss.
- 40:02That's a fucking that's a matchup.
- 40:05It will make no sense at all in a head to head kind of concept, but still great.
- 40:11Conair versus Raising Arizona.
- 40:14It's going to be interesting.
- 40:16We did a weird thing.
- 40:18That means there's only like three official episodes left.
- 40:21Yeah, I said that earlier.
- 40:24Weird.
- 40:27Yeah, this whole experiment's been wild at heart and weird on top.
- 40:31Weird on top.
- 40:32Oh, thanks, Lula.
- 40:35Also, thanks to our Patreon supporters,
- 40:38Josh, Sean, Josie, Rico, Matt, Adam and Bill
- 40:42and to our cage dancers, Ira, John Freeman, Lance, Nathan and Cameron.
- 40:48If Peter missed your name, let us know.
- 40:49He'll say it twice next week.
- 40:52Did you say Bill? Bill.
- 40:54You said Bill. Bill. Bill. Bill.
- 40:57Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill.
- 41:02Bill, Bill.
- 41:05Bye bye.
- 41:13Nick, I have a question for you.
- 41:14OK.
- 41:16Are you watching burn notice or is this just a Josie thing?
- 41:19Just Josie.
- 41:20Oh, she just is watching for notice.
- 41:22Josie just put on burn notice.
- 41:24Why did she like text you about it?
- 41:26Yeah, she texted me about it. She's like, I see why you like the show.
- 41:28And then we talked about how we talked about like nice things about burn notice.
- 41:34No, I've been in the room for like parts of episodes, but I'm not watching it.
- 41:38Yeah, I don't doubt you that burn notice is fine.
- 41:41I just I don't have time.
- 41:42Yeah, I'm not pulling up like a serialized show from 30 years ago
- 41:49or whatever the fuck came out.
- 41:54Because I could I could get in on that.
- 41:55I have opinions on Dark Souls.
- 41:57Oh, I just started a new Elden Ring playthrough this morning.
- 41:59Let me tell you about it.
- 42:00No. OK. No.
- 42:04You, Sean, the signal canceled.
- 42:08We've got enough Sean audio.
- 42:10We'll see something. It'll be fine.
- 42:11That's true.
- 42:12And just be slurs.
- 42:15All the slurs we've recorded over the years.
- 42:18Sean, no, don't say that.
