- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for August 29, 2026 Arousal and Non-Concordance When the
- 0:06Body and Brain Disagree I'm doing an extra post this week because something
- 0:10that has been on my mind more or less fits.
- 0:13I want to talk about arousal and non-concordance. Arousal and non-concordance
- 0:17means the brain and the genitals are not in sync with one experiencing arousal while the other is not.
- 0:22One version of this happens to men regularly. Anytime a man has a dream, he gets an erection.
- 0:27So if he wakes during or just after a dream, he is erect.
- 0:31His penis is aroused, but his brain is not, unless his dream was sexual.
- 0:35Being erect may make him think of sex, getting his brain going,
- 0:39especially if it's the weekend and morning sex is a thing for him and his wife.
- 0:43On the other hand, if it's a weekday and he has an important early meeting,
- 0:46he ignores the erection and it goes away without his mind ever being aroused.
- 0:50This happens often for many men, and it's not a big deal or a problem.
- 0:54It's also possible for the brain to be aroused while the body is not,
- 0:57which we will explore shortly.
- 0:59Arousal non-concordance can happen when a couple is together,
- 1:02and this can lead to confusion and hurt feelings.
- 1:05The first scenario is when a man finds his wife wet and assumes it means she wants sex.
- 1:09But if her body is aroused and her mind is not, his assumption can go wrong.
- 1:14If he suggests sex and she says no, he may feel hurt.
- 1:17She's aroused and she still won't have sex. If he just goes for it,
- 1:21assuming she is all about it, she may get upset.
- 1:24If she lets him keep going, she may have an orgasm she doesn't want to have.
- 1:28And yes, guys, that's a real thing.
- 1:30A wife can make the same mistake, taking her husband's erection as an indication he's aroused.
- 1:35If his brain is not aroused and he says no to sex, she may worry he doesn't
- 1:39desire her, is looking at porn, or is cheating on her.
- 1:42If she wants more sex than he does, his refusal can hurt just as when the genders are reversed.
- 1:47The opposite, when the brain is aroused and the body is not,
- 1:50can also cause problems.
- 1:51He does something that gets her going mentally, but when she suggests sex,
- 1:55he finds she is not wet. He thinks maybe she is offering mercy sex.
- 1:59If he tells her she is not aroused, that can cause an argument that kills the moment.
- 2:03There's a major gender difference here. A man knows when he has an erection,
- 2:07but it's possible for a woman's body to be aroused and her not be aware of it,
- 2:11especially if it's moderate arousal or she is not thinking about it.
- 2:15So, while both men and women experience arousal non-concordance,
- 2:18men are almost always aware of it while women may not be.
- 2:21It has been suggested women's bodies respond to the arousal easily To keep them
- 2:25from pain or injury from unwanted sex.
- 2:28So how should this information affect your marriage? First, you both need to
- 2:32understand that arousal non-concordance is a thing.
- 2:35Second, you need to agree that neither erections nor wetness communicate arousal.
- 2:39Arousal is communicated by saying you are aroused.
- 2:42In practical terms, how does this play out? If she says she wants sex,
- 2:46but he doesn't find her body aroused, using some lube and going slow at first
- 2:50allows him to do what she wants.
- 2:52This might get her mind going, or she might orgasm without her brain kicking
- 2:56in to the last moment, if at all.
- 2:58Hubby could say, your body is not there yet, how do you want to proceed?
- 3:02And then go with what she suggests.
- 3:04On the other side, you should never see her physical arousal as an invitation or an obligation.
- 3:09It makes sense that God would design the generally lower-drive spouse to be
- 3:12easily aroused physically, but what a woman does with that is her choice.
- 3:16She should lean toward generosity, but it's up to her.
- 3:19This is Paul, and understanding arousal non-concordance helps you do sex well.
