- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for April 13, 2026 Sex After 50, Closing the Knowledge Gap
- 0:07Sex does not end at 50, or 60, or even 70.
- 0:12At least, it need not. This week, I want to talk about keeping sex good.
- 0:17These podcasts are aimed at folks over 50, but if you've not reached that milestone,
- 0:21I suggest you listen along.
- 0:23Some of this will be relevant as you get older, and if you tuck it in your brain
- 0:27now, you will have some awareness of solutions when one of these problems occurs.
- 0:30Most of us are not nearly as informed about sex as we need to be.
- 0:34Most of us are pretty clueless about our spouse's sexual organs and how they function.
- 0:38And some like basic information about their own bodies and how they function.
- 0:42No one taught us this stuff when we were young, and it's not like the public
- 0:45library is offering a course on this for adults. When problems occur,
- 0:49many turn to their doctor.
- 0:50Now, I'm a fan of doctors, but most get almost no education about sexuality.
- 0:55A recent survey of graduating medical students found 80% had received less than
- 0:595 hours of dedicated sexual health education.
- 1:02When asked, they said they felt completely unprepared to deal with most sexual issues.
- 1:07If you get to a gynecologist or urologist, the situation is better,
- 1:11but you have to get to them first.
- 1:13Beyond this, I find most doctors won't bring up the subject of sex.
- 1:18Because of a stroke, a blood condition, and turnover at the clinic we use for
- 1:22primary care, I've seen more than a dozen doctors in the last six years.
- 1:26Not one of them has asked if I have any sexual issues. This despite the fact
- 1:30that two conditions I have cause sexual issues.
- 1:33The other place folks turn for help is the internet.
- 1:36There is some great information out there. There's also information that is
- 1:40wrong and some that could be harmful.
- 1:42Verify and re-verify what you read. The same is true for books,
- 1:46as anyone can put one out today.
- 1:48The rest of this week, I will touch on some common issues for couples having
- 1:52sex after 50. I will give some medical information, but I am not a doctor.
- 1:57Take what I say to your doctor. If your primary care physician does not seem
- 2:01to have a good understanding of the issue, ask for a referral.
- 2:04Most couples can continue to be sexual well past retirement.
- 2:08Don't let a speed bump end sexual intimacy.
- 2:11This is Paul, and age should not keep you from doing sex well.
