- 0:25Join me, Click follow, like and subscribe and let's see where
- 0:29this leads. This past weekend was
- 0:34Valentine's Day and for a lot of people that day carry some
- 0:39weight leading up to it. During and after.
- 0:45There's a lot of hope, a lot of what if thinking and for some
- 0:51let down. And let's not forget the people
- 0:54that aren't in a relationship and are confronted with this
- 0:57day. When I was little, my dad, he
- 1:01used to always show up for me on Valentine's Day.
- 1:04He would give me and my mom the same thing, flowers and
- 1:07chocolate. But then I got married and my
- 1:10husband, he didn't care for Hallmark holidays so we didn't
- 1:16do much. I don't remember getting flowers
- 1:18or chocolate, maybe a dinner here or there, till eventually I
- 1:24stopped caring about Valentine's Day too.
- 1:28Maybe that's for the best, because now that I'm single, I'm
- 1:32reminded of Valentine's Day. I'm also reminded of something
- 1:35else, a type of love that I don't think we talked about
- 1:40enough, especially on Valentine's Day.
- 1:44And that is the art of loving yourself.
- 1:48Sounds a little hokey, even cheesy, but that's where I'm at.
- 1:53Basking in the cheese for so long I didn't really consider
- 1:59what mattered to me. I kind of just went along for
- 2:03the ride, doing whatever people do, getting to whatever next
- 2:08milestone there is to get to, and forgetting about myself
- 2:12along the way. Forgetting to check in and ask
- 2:15myself, am I still doing this or staying in this for the right
- 2:19reasons? Is this serving me?
- 2:23Do I even like the way I feel in this situation or in this
- 2:26relationship? And when I speak to people, a
- 2:30lot of people forget where they fit in, or they fit in.
- 2:35In relationships that is. It makes me think of a friend.
- 2:40She'd been in a relationship for not that long.
- 2:43It was a few months and she saw the relationship was slowly
- 2:47dissolving in front of her, but she just tightened her grip.
- 2:51She wanted so badly for it to last, last till Valentine's Day.
- 2:57Because like so many, she thought maybe on Valentine's
- 3:01Day, everything's going to change.
- 3:04He's going to wake up and live up to his potential.
- 3:08He's going to be the guy she wanted.
- 3:12But in those few weeks leading up to Valentine's Day, something
- 3:16shifted inside of her. She started seeing the
- 3:19relationship for what it was. Not something worth holding on
- 3:23to, even if it meant that she wasn't going to find out what
- 3:27she was going to get on Valentine's Day.
- 3:30So she did something. Something different for her.
- 3:33She let go. She walked from that
- 3:36relationship. She didn't wait for it to
- 3:38implode or explode. She just realized this isn't
- 3:43what I'm looking for and no matter how much I'm trying, it
- 3:47doesn't matter. And maybe I won't get that
- 3:51Valentine's Day trip that I was hoping for, or the jewelry or
- 3:56the nice dinner. Maybe I was never going to get
- 3:59it. Maybe I'm holding on for no
- 4:02reason. When she let go, she got
- 4:06something in return, a better gift.
- 4:11She walked because of self respect.
- 4:14She had lost that along the way in that relationship.
- 4:18She had lost her value in herself, AKA herself worth.
- 4:24But what she got from walking was more valuable.
- 4:28It was a step towards herself and self love.
- 4:33When I think about these things and relationships where you just
- 4:38want so badly for somebody to show up for you in ways that
- 4:41they haven't or no longer do, it reminds me of a poem.
- 4:48When I was 17, a friend of mine shared a poem with me.
- 4:52I don't know, maybe she shared it because she liked it, or
- 4:55maybe she saw something lacking in me.
- 4:57I'll never know. But nonetheless, at the time I
- 5:01read the poem, it didn't resonate with me at all.
- 5:04I didn't want to embody this idea that it was up to me to
- 5:08take care of myself, that I had to look out for myself, that I
- 5:12couldn't wait to be saved. I couldn't wait for somebody to
- 5:15bring me flowers. I think I always had this idea
- 5:20that somebody was going to want to love me and cherish me and
- 5:25take care of me and that I was going to be able to exhale a big
- 5:29exhale and let them just do everything for me, know me and
- 5:35my needs better than I know my own.
- 5:39So when it was time for me to design my yearbook page, by then
- 5:42I was 18 and I guess my 18 year old self must have known where I
- 5:48was heading because I included that poem in my yearbook.
- 5:53I think it was the only thing I included other than my name.
- 5:57I don't think I had photos. I can't recall.
- 6:01The poem is called After a While by Veronica A Schoffstall.
- 6:07After a while, you learn the subtle difference between
- 6:10holding a hand and chaining a soul, and you learn that love
- 6:15doesn't mean leaning and company doesn't mean security.
- 6:19And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts and
- 6:23presents aren't promises. And you begin to accept your
- 6:27defeats with your head up and your eyes open with the grace of
- 6:31a woman, not the grief of a child.
- 6:35And you learn to build all of your roads on today because
- 6:38tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans and futures
- 6:42have a way of falling down in mid flight.
- 6:46After a while you learn even sunshine burns if you get too
- 6:50much. So you plant your own garden and
- 6:52you decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone
- 6:55to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really
- 6:58can endure, that you really are strong and you really do have
- 7:02worth. And you learn.
- 7:04And you learn with every goodbye you learn.
- 7:10For me, it took over 20 years to learn that lesson and to embody
- 7:16all that was written. But I got here after enough time
- 7:21had passed and my friend had accepted her breakup.
- 7:24We were inching closer and closer to Valentine's Day.
- 7:28And she asked, do you think I'm going to get anything for
- 7:31Valentine's Day? Do you think he's going to send
- 7:35me flowers, call me, write me? I told her no, but I reminded
- 7:42her of what she did gain, and that was taking one step closer
- 7:46to loving herself. That only comes with walking
- 7:50away from something that isn't right for you, even when you so
- 7:54badly want it to be right. If you're curious, he did text.
- 8:00He basically said all the great things about her and then
- 8:04reiterated that they weren't right for each other.
- 8:06I'm not really sure what purpose that tech served and who it
- 8:10served more, but I guess it was nice that she got to receive it.
- 8:13On Valentine's Day. I mentioned that my journey to
- 8:17self love took a long time, and that's completely true.
- 8:22I don't know why it took so long for me to kind of see things for
- 8:25what they were, allow acceptance in to situations where maybe I
- 8:30didn't want to accept the truth. But the interesting thing is my
- 8:35journey to self love didn't start with me recognizing people
- 8:38and accepting things as they were.
- 8:41Instead it started a few years back with gifts I got myself
- 8:46when I had my own company with my friend I worked so much.
- 8:50I talked about that in the episode called Burnout, and
- 8:53after working so hard, I felt like I didn't have enough to
- 8:56show for it. Specific stuff, stuff that I
- 8:59deemed important. Whether or not it is didn't
- 9:02matter because I finally recognized that it didn't matter
- 9:06what other people valued. It mattered what I valued.
- 9:10So when I took on the second job, a second full time job that
- 9:14is, I decided I was going to dedicate part of my second
- 9:17salary to buying some of this stuff that I thought I should
- 9:21have and recoup some of the losses, Perceived losses that
- 9:26is. At the time, it was just a
- 9:29fantasy. It was an idea of what could I
- 9:31do with the money. But then it became a reality
- 9:35when I was on vacation in Florida.
- 9:38I'd just gotten out of the swimming pool.
- 9:39My hair looked all unkempt, I was wearing very casual clothes,
- 9:44and I asked to be dropped to the mall.
- 9:47I wasn't familiar with this mall, but I thought I had time
- 9:50to kill, so why not do a little shopping?
- 9:54I got dropped in the section, that's the luxury part of the
- 9:57mall, and I was looking at Cartier and I thought, yeah, why
- 10:02not? I'll go in.
- 10:04Maybe check out some earrings from the Love Collection.
- 10:06They were little studs, probably the most affordable things
- 10:09there. They didn't have them.
- 10:12Then I thought about the bracelet, also part of the same
- 10:15collection. The woman looked me up and down.
- 10:19I guess I was having a real Pretty Woman moment at that
- 10:21time. I'd like to say people don't
- 10:24judge, but who am I kidding? We all judge even if we don't
- 10:29want to admit it. I asked her if I could see the
- 10:31love bracelet. She checked my size and she had
- 10:36it. She put it on me and the way to
- 10:39put it on someone is you have to actually screw it on somebody.
- 10:43It's like a commitment to love bracelet.
- 10:46I looked at it and I said yeah, this feels right.
- 10:50I said I'll take it. I chose not to remove it,
- 10:54instead I wanted to keep it exactly where it was.
- 10:58She asked me who was getting it for me and I said me.
- 11:02Then she said what's the occasion and I said it's
- 11:06Tuesday. I hadn't planned on buying this
- 11:09so there really was no reason other than the fact that it was
- 11:11for me and today is as good as any day.
- 11:15She smiled and I left. This one single purchase marked
- 11:20my ME era, an era that I think everyone needs to indulge in
- 11:26just a little or maybe a lot. A time to figure out what's
- 11:31important to you and then seek it out.
- 11:34When I returned back to Los Angeles, the bracelet was kind
- 11:37of scratching me, so I took it into the Cartier in Beverly
- 11:41Hills, and that's when I found out that I could get the inside
- 11:44of my bracelet engraved. I didn't know what the options
- 11:47were, so I wanted to explore them all.
- 11:51So I looked at the fonts. I figured out how many
- 11:53characters I could have, and then I just needed to figure out
- 11:57what it should say. So I sat there and I thought and
- 12:04I thought about myself, love, and what this bracelet meant to
- 12:09me. And then I had the word.
- 12:15I told the woman, let's do a heart, then this word.
- 12:18All in lowercase script followed by another heart to bookend it.
- 12:24She said, can I ask you about the word?
- 12:27Why'd you choose it? And I said, oh, because my love
- 12:34for myself is that so before I share the word that I engraved
- 12:39on my bracelet, let me first tell you my wish for you.
- 12:45My wish is that you pay attention to yourself and what
- 12:49you care about and that you care for yourself even when caring
- 12:53for others. That you check in with yourself
- 12:58and you ask yourself when you're in a relationship that doesn't
- 13:01feel right, should I still be in this?
- 13:05Or you ask yourself why it is that it's so hard to let go and
- 13:08you remember that it's just small steps towards yourself
- 13:14that'll bring you self love and yourself love.
- 13:19Well, I hope it's like mine. The word I engraved was
- 13:25limitless. Thanks for listening.
- 13:31These episodes are unscripted. They're my free flowing thoughts
- 13:34as I reflect back on past conversations, experiences, what
