- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Hi there, and welcome to another episode of Rise Up, Live Joy Your Way.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, I just want to say thank you for taking some time out of your day to spend with me.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Today I want to talk a little bit about mental clarity.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes, with the go, go, go of the world that we live in, we can feel a little bit dissociated or we can feel just foggy, just not really sure what we're doing or why we're doing it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And so some habits in order to improve mental quality is something that I just wanted to touch on today.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: One of the things that we can do first and foremost is to pay attention and identify where the biggest distractions are for you specifically.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And when I'm talking about distractions, I'm not just talking about external distractions, but also internal distractions, because both of those are a huge obstacle to mental clarity.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: External distractions, of course, can involve anything in your environment that might be grabbing your attention.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So whether those distractions are if you're in the workplace, perhaps, maybe it's colleagues, even if you're working from home with the with the constant um pinging through instant messaging and you know different tools that are out there, it that could be an external, an external distraction.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Um in terms of just even being in your own house, you know, sometimes you'll be a bit in the middle of something and family will come into the room and start asking you a question, and so that can be a distraction.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Um, social media can be a distraction, watching TV can be a distraction.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: These are just examples of external distractions.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: However, when I'm talking about internal distractions, what I'm really referring to is your own thoughts can be an internal distraction.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: That overthinking, that rumination can be an internal distraction.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Getting overly anxious and getting caught up in an anxiety cycle can be an internal distraction.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: False beliefs about self, uh limiting beliefs, self-judgment, that inner critic can be an internal distraction.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So just paying attention and bringing to the awareness what does distract you throughout the day can start moving you towards mental clarity.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: You know, oftentimes we're not even aware of how our own self-judgment or self-judger, I should say, uh, creates an internal distraction because we'll be in the middle of something, then we start talking negatively to ourselves and suddenly we can't focus on the thing that we want to, that we're trying to work on.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: So it's paying attention to just um to not just the external distractions, but the internal ones as well.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: We've all heard it before, but nutrition is really important.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Eating that balanced, brain-healthy diet is really important.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Um while I am not gonna, you know, definitely, if you feel like you need to speak to a nutritionist or a registered dietitian, absolutely, I wholeheartedly support that, but just paying attention to what it is you are eating, making sure that you're uh bringing certain things into your diet, um, berries and fruits can can have help with memory.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: That's um through science and research that's been sort of documented over the years.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Vegetables can um, you know, especially the orange vegetables and leafy green vegetables can absolutely help.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Eggs are a great source of omega th omega-3 fatty acids and the protein and vitamins A, E, and D.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Whole grain products are really great for us.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Nuts can also keep our mind um sharp.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, I know that in my family I have one kiddo who is uh allergic to nuts, so that's not really an option, so you have to find other things that you can bring into the diet.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Um, paying attention to just eating lean meat, seafood is really healthy for you, lentils.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And of course, I'm not saying go ahead and eat all of these things.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: You obviously have to pay attention to what works for your body and what doesn't, but just having that balanced diet will absolutely help with that mental clarity.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Taking some time to uh decompress and maybe even take a walk to clear your head, you know, getting out into nature, walking, um, not quote unquote being on, allowing yourself to take that break allows you to settle your nervous system down and allows you to clear your head, which leads into giving yourself a break.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Um now, while I'm talking about in taking a walk and just decompressing, that's actually physically taking a break and also a mental break, but also giving yourself a break.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Paying attention to how often you're trying to multitask, or you're trying to get things perfect, or you're trying to stay on top of things to the detriment of your own health.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Give yourself that ability to slow down, you know, maybe learn to limit the amount of times that you're trying to multitask.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Because when we are trying to multitask, we're not really paying attention to any one thing full blast.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: We're kind of split between many different things.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: So just slowing that down, that can contribute to mental clarity.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, drinking water is a huge one.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So kind of leaning back to the healthy and balanced nutrition, it's also drinking water because poor hydration can absolutely affect your mental clarity.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: It can affect your energy levels and it can affect your mood.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: So keeping your body well hydrated is really important.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Um, as well as is you know, just physical movement that can help with your mental clarity as well.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, maintaining your own clear your own clear goals, but also recognizing what your values are.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: So, this is from the mental emotional standpoint is identifying what's important and meaningful to you.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: That can help keep the mental clarity, keep the mental focus around what it is that brings you a sense of purpose in your own life.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, the big one that that I know that working even with my clients can be really tough is just getting it enough sleep.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: You know, so often we think that that's the one thing that we can compromise on, but our body and our brain really does need enough sleep.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I know this is something that I continue to can push myself to get better about, having that clean, healthy sleep, because if we don't get enough sleep, it's difficult to concentrate and it's difficult to have the energy we need throughout the day.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: When we think about, you know, the productivity that we're trying to work towards.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So as I said at the beginning of this, so often our our worlds are just go, go, go, go, go.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Well, at the end of the day, having that mental clarity is one of the key elements that we need in order to feel like we can continue to go, and it's also part of our own well-being.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: So take pay taking time, excuse me, as I stumble on my words, taking time to slow down and to pay attention to how you can improve your mental clarity can absolutely have an effect in a positive way on other things that are going on in your life, in a positive way in your relationships, maybe where you're headed in your your work or your career.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: These are things to slow down and just take note of.
