- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi, it's Adam here. And in today's episode of The
- 0:43Hypnotist, you could be listening to a fear of flying
- 0:46hypnosis session. And it was created for a client
- 0:50that when they were reasonably young, travelling on their own,
- 0:55they had a bit of a panic attack.
- 0:56They felt very, very anxious on a plane and they were given a
- 1:00choice. They could either stay on the
- 1:02plane and take the flight or they could leave the plane.
- 1:05And in that moment they left the plane.
- 1:07And from that point onwards, flying triggered this feeling of
- 1:11anxiety, sometimes panic. And yet they had a career that
- 1:16they were taking lots of flights anyway.
- 1:19But some of these flights that were longer or unexpected would
- 1:24create more anxiety. So they really wanted to just
- 1:27banish this fear rather than have a life of carrying on with
- 1:31this fear. But sometimes the brain is a
- 1:34little bit tricky and it kind of keeps this thing that even if a
- 1:38flight was totally fine, it has this idea of but but what if you
- 1:42were lucky? What if the next time it's
- 1:43worse? You also get this strange thing
- 1:46where it doesn't become about the flying anymore.
- 1:48It becomes about the fear that you feel while you're flying.
- 1:51And then that becomes an element that even if you try and help
- 1:54that with medication like Xanax or alcohol, you don't even get
- 1:59the full benefit of saying, well, I I beat that fear because
- 2:03you can attribute it to whatever was helping you to get through
- 2:08that. So you get this weird thing
- 2:09where sometimes doing things to help actually keep you trapped
- 2:12in the very thing you want to avoid.
- 2:16This uses the level of an expanding and contracting
- 2:20comfort zone. It also has an analogy of video
- 2:23games. A lot of video games have this
- 2:26kind of idea of a boss level that when you get through
- 2:29certain things, you have to defeat the boss before you get
- 2:32to the next level up. So there's a few metaphors and
- 2:35analogies here designed to almost gamify the experience and
- 2:40to treat it like, OK, you're going to get some benefit of
- 2:44desensitization from travelling with someone else under the
- 2:47influence of medication on a short flight.
- 2:50But you would get way more benefit if it was a longer
- 2:52flight that was unexpected, that you're flying on your own
- 2:56without any assistance from alcohol or medication
- 2:58whatsoever. And under those circumstances,
- 3:02that's going to be more of a victory.
- 3:03That's going to expand your comfort zone even more and the
- 3:07more you believe it, the truer it becomes.
- 3:10Obviously it was created for a specific client and they had a
- 3:13couple of flights they knew they'd be taking in the next
- 3:16year. One, the longer one was going to
- 3:18be 14 hours. We really wanted to kind of
- 3:20frame this 14 hour flight as kind of like a boss level, this
- 3:24kind of element that once you defeat that, then anything below
- 3:28that feels easier in comparison. And again, the more you believe
- 3:32it, the truer it becomes. It might be that you have a fear
- 3:36of flying, but require a different approach, different
- 3:39metaphors, different analogies, different direct suggestions.
- 3:42In which case there will be a link in the show notes where you
- 3:44can schedule a free consultation call to explore working with me.
- 3:48For now, though, you might get some benefit from this session,
- 3:50even though it was created for someone else.
- 3:52So find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be
- 3:55disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 5:04Yeah. Take a deep breath in and as you
- 6:01breathe in, breathe in a wonderful feeling of calm and
- 6:07relaxation. And as you relax, just allow any
- 6:16feelings of worry, stress, or tension.
- 6:21I feel like it's melting away, it's diluting and dissipating.
- 6:28And imagine feeling it. Leave your body in that outward
- 6:33breath. As you breathe in, breathe in
- 6:43deeper than the previous breath. And as you exhale, exhale for
- 6:52longer, allowing more of that unresourceful tension or concern
- 7:05to feel like it's leaving your body.
- 7:09And when you breathe in, breathe in that deep breath of pure
- 7:13relaxation, a wonderful feeling of getting more and more
- 7:21courageous and confident, relaxed and optimistic.
- 7:33The deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you become, And the more
- 7:37relaxed you become, the deeper you breathe.
- 7:41And as your body relaxes, your imagination awakens as your body
- 7:51begins to relax even more. Maybe you've already noticed
- 7:59your breathing settles into a smooth and steady rhythm, and
- 8:06with each breath, each moment, your conscious mind, that
- 8:11overactive part of your mind begins to rest while your
- 8:17subconscious mind becomes more alert, more receptive, and more
- 8:27ready to embrace a powerful truth.
- 8:33The truth that you are becoming free.
- 8:41And in this calm, open space within your mind, I want you to
- 8:50imagine your comfort zone as a shape.
- 8:57Many people think of a circle. Some people make it 3
- 9:02dimensional, like a sphere. Whatever it is, make it glow.
- 9:09A glowing circle, a glowing sphere that surrounds you.
- 9:15I want you to get a sense that this sphere, this circle can
- 9:21expand or contract. Every time you do something
- 9:28outside of this comfort zone, it expands proportionately in every
- 9:33direction, and every time you avoid or rely on a substitute to
- 9:44help, it contracts. But this means the power to
- 9:56change and adapt. This comfort zone is within your
- 10:01control because it grows not just from doing something new,
- 10:11but from doing something challenging, daunting, perhaps
- 10:18even undesirable. What if you've already expanded
- 10:26it more than most ever will? Many people in your situation
- 10:32would have avoided flying, and yet you've been on hundreds of
- 10:40flights. This shows a level of resolve,
- 10:47of courage, of dedication and determination.
- 10:56It's time to banish echoes of fear for good.
- 11:02I want you to imagine traditional weighing scales, the
- 11:12kind of ones that used to be made of brass.
- 11:20You would put weights on one side and something else on the
- 11:24other to measure the weight of that thing.
- 11:30But this time, rather than weights made of metal, I want
- 11:37you to imagine on one side you place fear, and on the other
- 11:42side of the scales you place freedom.
- 11:48And the heavier the fear, the smaller the comfort zone
- 11:53becomes. Very small comfort zone becomes
- 12:02almost like a prison cell. You have freedom, but only
- 12:07between the four walls. But other people, the planet is
- 12:16their space. Because each time you take a
- 12:22flight, especially when you do it on your own or without
- 12:28medication, the weight shifts, the scale tips freedom gains
- 12:38strength. Your comfort zone expands.
- 12:45Every flight you take is like lifting A heavier weight at the
- 12:49gym. Short flights add strength, but
- 12:55longer flights even more. Flying with another person adds
- 13:01strength. Flying on your own adds more.
- 13:08Even flying with medication gives you something.
- 13:12Flying without medication gives you so much more, and each time
- 13:19your comfort zone stretches, grows, opens up the sky a little
- 13:26more. What if the world is your
- 13:31playground? You're becoming someone who
- 13:36chooses growth over comfort, and every time you fly, you are
- 13:43proving it. I wonder if you could imagine
- 13:49yourself the gate of a great adventure, like a warrior about
- 13:55to enter battle. And not just any battle, but a
- 14:01battle that has lasted years. And this time you're ready.
- 14:10Because this is more than just a flight.
- 14:15This is the final level boss battle, a level in the game of
- 14:22life that you are now ready to defeat, and you carry with you
- 14:32the memory of every flight you've ever taken.
- 14:36Victories. Every single one.
- 14:43There was only one time you got off that flight, but if that
- 14:50just proved that avoidance creates more weight on the
- 14:58balance of fear. From that point onwards, anxiety
- 15:06never defeated you. It tried, but you boarded
- 15:10anyway. It pushed, but you sat in your
- 15:15seat. It whispered lies, and yet you
- 15:20landed. Feel now, in this adventure
- 15:25within your imagination, that you hold the sword of defiance
- 15:31because you're no longer fighting the flight.
- 15:35You're fighting the idea that you were ever powerless, and
- 15:41that was the lie. Think about another powerful
- 15:49truth about a flight years ago, the one time you backed away
- 15:56from. And if you could go back and
- 16:00live that day again with what you now know, you would take the
- 16:07flight even if anxious, because doing so back then would have
- 16:16saved you many anxious moments that then followed.
- 16:25And if that was true then, it's true now.
- 16:31So you don't go timidly into battle, you go courageously into
- 16:39battle. You no longer need anxiety to
- 16:44decide for you, because you're the one levelling up.
- 16:51You're the one collecting the winds.
- 16:55You're the one walking into every airport with your head
- 16:58high. Not because the fear is
- 17:01completely gone yet, but because you've learned to keep moving
- 17:08courageously despite it. You embrace the flights, Seek
- 17:14out the flights. Choose to go longer and further
- 17:17than ever before because each flight expands your territory.
- 17:24Each take off is a flag you plant in the skies.
- 17:34And from this point forward, every time you feel even a
- 17:39flicker of doubt or anxiety, you'll remind yourself this is
- 17:47just the boss music playing. I've already beaten this level
- 17:52before. I can do it again.
- 17:55And I'll do it better this time. Because your comfort zone
- 18:01doesn't shrink anymore. It grows.
- 18:04It stretches, it expands to fit the skies.
- 18:10And you, You were made to fly. Now, as you begin to come back
- 18:18to the here and now, you come back with a new perspective, a
- 18:26new attitude, a desire to win more battles, to shift the
- 18:35weight of fear and freedom, to expand your comfort zone.
- 18:43Think of perhaps the ultimate level.
- 18:48A long flight, 14 hours, no medication, and flying solo.
- 18:57You are looking forward to vanquishing that level because
- 19:05in doing so, every flight less than that will feel like a walk
- 19:11in the park, like a computer game.
- 19:15When you complete an advanced level, the levels that preceded
- 19:20it feel easy in comparison. It is true in a game.
- 19:25It is true in your life, so you relish taking on those
- 19:32challenging levels, knowing it is the key to expanding your
- 19:38comfort zone and a future of more freedom.
- 19:46It's time to return to the here and now.
- 19:47So take a deep breath in through your nose and down through your
- 19:52nose. Just wiggle your fingers and
- 19:54wiggle your toes. Start to connect and calibrate
- 19:56into the here and the now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00.
