- 0:17SPEAKER_00: The game was about to come on, and my mom, who is well into her 80s, was about to have a birthday party that involved coloring.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: He looked at me like I asked him to move to another country.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I'm Lisa Nicole, and this is Heart Copy Journal.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Today, a birthday, a box of coloring pencils, and how 45 minutes became something else.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: It was my mom's birthday, and I told my dad, We're going to have a coloring party.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And he said, A what?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And I said, just 45 minutes.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Just give me 45 minutes to an hour.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna play her like favorite music and we're color.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: He for the most part threw a fit because the game was coming on, right?
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So I kept it simple.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You can commit to 45 minutes, Dad.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Can you just please commit to 45 minutes?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And he grumbled and then moved on.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: We had our favorite meal.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: We had our favorite cake.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And if you're from Texas, you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And then we brought in the gifts.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: A coloring devotional journal for my mom, pages that I had printed for me and my dad, and a good set of coloring pencils.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I put on my mom's favorite singer, Mickey Gyden, because mom likes country.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I sat there and I just took it in.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Both my parents at the same table in the same room.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Delighted, engrossed, consumed by this activity of coloring.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: My parents were seasoned saints, it's not like a lot of people their age, they're worried.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: You know, sometimes they're worried about like what happens to the mind.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: They do brain games and word searches and solitaire, crossover puzzles.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So I told them that the myoclinic says, like while we're coloring, right?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Coloring helps calm the brain and the body.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: And the study said that people in their 80s found that those who kept up arts and crafts were less likely to develop like memory problems.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: There was this thing that was happening inside of them that was producing some good.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: It's an association, not a promise.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: So then the tussle was over.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Who got which color?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Then came the tussle over who got which color.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: You need to share.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: What are you coloring?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Share this with me.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Thirty minutes passed.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: An hour passed.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: An hour and a half.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Two hours.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: By this time, mom had gotten up to go to bed, and my dad was still coloring one page I gave him.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Thoughtfully, looking at the colors and which one he would add and use.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: So I sat there with photos and video of how absorbed he was.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: When he finished, I said, Now I need you to sign it and say happy birthday.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: He signed it, held it up to his chest, and gave me this big Chester Cat smile.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And I took the photo and took the page to my mom, who had been waiting for it.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: All I can think of was Lord was on this.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: He was just there, established in our presence.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: It was such a precious moment.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: One I cherish and I can't wait to do again.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And I kept doing it.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And I started giving friends coloring pages and coloring devotionals and copy work.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And there's something there.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Something that requires us to slow down and just enjoy his presence.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: So this is a love letter from my Heavenly Father that I now give to you.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: This week, color and write the verse side by side.
