- 0:10hypnotherapist, demanded by celebrities, CEOs and even
- 0:14royalty. Adam Cox.
- 0:16These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:19world famous Harley Street. This podcast features powerful
- 0:23hypnosis, so do not listen while driving or operating machinery.
- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. And in today's episode of The
- 0:42Hypnotist, you're going to be listening to a hypnosis session
- 0:47about alcohol reduction. And sometimes I work with people
- 0:50who they just want to go cold Turkey, they want to quit
- 0:54alcohol for good, they never want to see it again.
- 0:56And that's fine. But my outcome as a
- 0:59hypnotherapist is to help my clients achieve whatever their
- 1:02goals are. And this particular client felt
- 1:06that they were drinking too much and too frequently.
- 1:10And the goal wasn't to stop drinking altogether, but to find
- 1:15an element of balance of moderation.
- 1:17They wanted to not drink during the week, to drink on weekends,
- 1:22but not drink too much. And what was interesting is that
- 1:26the area of their life where they felt like they had that
- 1:29kind of balance was when it came to coffee.
- 1:33So they would have one or two very nice cups of coffee, but
- 1:36they would only have it in the morning, never after midday.
- 1:40And they wouldn't have any more than two cups of coffee.
- 1:42So they got the balance just right.
- 1:44They got the upside of this high quality coffee, but without it
- 1:49negatively affecting the quality of their life, like sleep or
- 1:53some people get fidgety or triggered or, you know, a little
- 1:58bit on edge if they have too much caffeine.
- 2:02So for them, they found a way that one or two cups was just
- 2:06right. And it's highly likely that one
- 2:09or two glasses of wine on a Friday or Saturday would be just
- 2:14right for alcohol. So we do an element of a
- 2:17metaphor, sowing the seed of priming.
- 2:20There's a lovely phrase that I like in psychology, which is
- 2:23neural networks that fire together, wire together.
- 2:26So we want to activate the coffee neural network before we
- 2:30talk about alcohol. So the brain knows how to map
- 2:34those strategies across. And then there's an element of
- 2:38disassociated timelines. So seeing what happens if
- 2:42nothing changes, seeing what happens if something does
- 2:45change, and then connecting to the emotion of that change.
- 2:49Feeling how good it feels to experience more of a glow, more
- 2:54vitality, more health, more confidence, and all of these
- 2:57things. And a lot of the time, by the
- 3:00way, alcohol, because it is something that people habituate
- 3:05and become dependent on. Actually, when you have less,
- 3:10actually it's highly likely that their body will recalibrate so
- 3:14that when they do have just one or two glasses, that has the
- 3:18same impact as if they were have 3 or 4 glasses.
- 3:21If they're drinking less because their body isn't sensitized and
- 3:25habituated to it. So it's not even that they're
- 3:29going to enjoy the alcohol less, it's probably they're going to
- 3:32enjoy it more because of all the other upsides that they're
- 3:35getting. Obviously, this client just
- 3:38wanted to reduce alcohol. They didn't want to remove it.
- 3:41Your goals might be different. It might be that you don't want
- 3:44to change anything about alcohol, but there's another
- 3:46area of your life that you want to reduce.
- 3:48Again, it's always good to think of what change do you want to
- 3:51make before listening to the hypnosis session so that it it
- 3:56links across to that positive intention.
- 3:59And of course, if you do want a private session with me to work
- 4:03on a specific area in your life that might not relate to alcohol
- 4:07at all, there will be a link in the show notes where you can
- 4:10schedule that free consultation call.
- 4:12For now, though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you
- 4:15won't be disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 4:56Take a deep breath in and as you breathe in, breathe in a slow,
- 5:06long, relaxing breath and as you exhale, that's it.
- 5:12Just allow your eyelids to close, and as they close, notice
- 5:20a sense of relaxation rippling from your eyelids all the way
- 5:25down your face down into your body, as you give yourself
- 5:32permission in this moment to just let go, to release any
- 5:41tension and worries. So as you breathe in, imagine
- 5:46breathing in a feeling of resourceful relaxation.
- 5:52Imagine it going into your nose, into your lungs, and as you
- 5:56exhale, just feel like tension is leaving your body.
- 6:03Breathing in what your body needs and exhaling anything that
- 6:10might be affecting your mood or your ability to manage emotions.
- 6:20That's it. And notice that the deeper you
- 6:24breathe, the more relaxed you become, and the more relaxed you
- 6:29become, the deeper you breathe. As your body relaxes, your
- 6:42imagination awakens and I want you to imagine what it would be
- 6:49like to walk towards a balcony. Not just any balcony, a specific
- 6:59balcony with views over a mountain range, orange and
- 7:07almond Groves, blue skies and sunshine.
- 7:13I don't want you to imagine how good it would feel to be on that
- 7:19balcony, in a comfortable chair, looking out across a wonderful
- 7:28view, connecting with that feeling of calm, tranquility or
- 7:36relaxation. And maybe there's certain things
- 7:49you notice there in that place, Maybe the warmth of the sun on
- 8:01your skin, or perhaps a gentle breeze.
- 8:10Or maybe it's just that your breathing changes when you feel
- 8:15relaxed in that place. Slower, longer breaths.
- 8:29I want you to get a sense then. You're feeling a form of mental
- 8:37escapism, a wonderful feeling of pure relaxation, and I want you
- 8:47to imagine there is a smell of fresh coffee brewing nearby.
- 9:02I want you to get a sense then the smell of that coffee reminds
- 9:08you of what it's like to have balance, to not overindulge but
- 9:20not deprive, to get the balance just right.
- 9:29When you think about that coffee, I want you to get a
- 9:34sense that the the enjoyment comes from discernment and
- 9:44boundaries. You are discerning with the type
- 9:51of coffee that you have when you drink it, how quickly you drink
- 9:59it, and when you choose to no longer drink.
- 10:06I want you to get a sands then. If this discernment and
- 10:12boundaries weren't there, then coffee would no longer enrich
- 10:19your life. I want you to get a sands then.
- 10:26The same coffee at a different time may affect your sleep.
- 10:31The same coffee in more quantities might affect your
- 10:38anxiety or make you jittery. I want you to get a sense that
- 10:43when it comes to coffee, just like Goldilocks, you found
- 10:49something that was just right. So allow that part of your mind,
- 11:01the part that gets it just right with coffee to be activated and
- 11:09start to wonder what your life would be like if it was just
- 11:15right. When it comes to alcohol, allow
- 11:23a seed to be planted in your subconscious mind.
- 11:28Some things or better with boundaries.
- 11:33Sometimes less is more. Sometimes it's quality over
- 11:40quantity to allow these seeds to be planted.
- 11:45As you imagine looking out over that balcony, seeing those
- 11:54orange Groves, perhaps blossoming almond Groves, and
- 12:02just allow your body to feel like it's going deeper and
- 12:07deeper, relaxed. I'm going to countdown from
- 12:1312:50 and in your imagination, I want you to imagine there is a
- 12:19staircase. A staircase that leads to your
- 12:25own private cinema. But with each step down the
- 12:30staircase, you will imagine that you're drifting towards your
- 12:37subconscious mind deeper and deeper to a place where change
- 12:44can happen easily. Standing at the top of that
- 12:50staircase, taking that first step, 10, feeling a wave of
- 12:55relaxation in your forehead. Nine, feeling that relaxation
- 13:01now going into your jaw. That's it.
- 13:06Letting go of any tension. 8 As you breathe in and breathe out,
- 13:12just feel a sense of freedom. The breathing is effortless.
- 13:21And then seven, feel that relaxation going down into your
- 13:24neck and your shoulders, each time taking another step down
- 13:29the staircase towards your own private cinema.
- 13:36Neck and shoulders relaxing now and then six, just imagine your
- 13:41arms feeling so limp and loose and relaxed, almost like they
- 13:50were just floating on water. And then and five.
- 13:54Just imagine your internal organs all relaxing at exactly
- 13:59the same time. Your lungs relax, your heart
- 14:05relaxes your stomach. And then five becomes four.
- 14:09And just imagine your gut releasing any echoes of anxiety,
- 14:15any tension. Feel it completely relaxing now
- 14:21is you give yourself permission to let go of any pent up stress,
- 14:27worries, frustrations. Just allow it to leave your body
- 14:31in that outward breath. And then three, just imagine
- 14:35your legs feeling limp, loose and heavy, so relaxed. 2 down to
- 14:41your calf muscles. Notice you're getting towards
- 14:45the bottom of that staircase, a staircase to your own private
- 14:50cinema one, feeling that relaxation in your toes and then
- 14:56rippling all the way up to the top of your head and then back
- 14:59down to your fingertips. That's it, zero.
- 15:03Now on the bottom of the staircase and make your way to a
- 15:07comfy chair, looking into your own private cinema screen.
- 15:16I want you to get a sense that first of all, you're going to
- 15:20play memories of your past. I want you to see memory after
- 15:25memory of the negative consequences of too much
- 15:33alcohol. I want you to see those times
- 15:39where there was big hangovers, how it led to food choices that
- 15:50were less than beneficial. I want you to see those times
- 15:57where you were sluggish, all those things you missed out on
- 16:04that you could have done if you either weren't drunk or
- 16:09hangover. I want you to get a sense that
- 16:15this is a trajectory, and I want you to follow this trajectory
- 16:22into your future. If nothing changes, you need to
- 16:27see perhaps more weight gain, more sluggishness, more bad
- 16:37choices, more missed opportunities.
- 16:42And if you get a sense then that future is just not desirable.
- 16:49Knowing what you now know, let me know by nodding your head.
- 16:56But I want you to step into this future 1st 10 years from now of
- 17:01drinking in this way. Step into that version of you 10
- 17:07years from now, drinking most nights, drinking during the
- 17:13week, drinking to excess, waking up with hangovers, missed
- 17:20opportunities and bad choices, and imagine staring in a full
- 17:25length mirror. Perhaps you could imagine
- 17:29yourself naked or in a swimming costume and just see what 10
- 17:33more years of drinking in this way.
- 17:38What impact it would have on your body, your emotions, your
- 17:43confidence. I want you to get a sense that
- 17:50maybe this version of you is even more sluggish, more
- 17:54overweight, less vitality. And if this feels that this
- 18:00should has become a must and you get to go back in time and make
- 18:06a change so this future never happens, just let me know about
- 18:10nodding your head. Just imagine being in that body
- 18:17and rewinding everything all the way back to the present moment
- 18:24so the future has never happened.
- 18:28And then imagine being in that private personal cinema looking
- 18:32at the screen. And I want you to see a version
- 18:36of you that makes decisions with alcohol in a very similar way to
- 18:48the decisions you make with coffee.
- 18:53There is a boundary with coffee, you only drink at a certain time
- 19:01of the day. So imagine seeing yourself on
- 19:06that screen, only drinking alcohol perhaps on a Friday
- 19:12evening or on a weekend, and already you can see that version
- 19:18of you that is more in control. I want you to get a sense that
- 19:26this version of you not only reduces when they drink, they
- 19:36reduce how much they drink. I want you to see a version of
- 19:42you that even if it is a Friday or a weekend with just one or
- 19:50two glasses spread over a nice long time, like a whole evening
- 19:57or a day. And because you're drinking
- 20:01less, I want you to see that version of you savouring the
- 20:08wine. Noticing the taste, the aroma,
- 20:17the subtlety is that maybe before you've missed.
- 20:23I want to see a version of you mindfully drinking, but I also
- 20:30want you to see that this version of you knows when enough
- 20:36is enough. I want you to see yourself
- 20:43calmly, confidently saying no thanks when offered a refill or
- 20:49another glass, and notice how it makes you feel to see that
- 20:55version of you in control. I want you to see that version
- 21:04of you where quality is more important than quantity.
- 21:12Maybe because you're drinking less, you're drinking better
- 21:17quality than ever before. And notice that version of you
- 21:25doesn't feel like you're missing out on anything.
- 21:30You get to drink nice wine and still have all the energy you
- 21:37would want the next day. I want you to see this version
- 21:41of you waking up hangover free because there's no hangover.
- 21:51The energy levels are there. This version of you doesn't need
- 21:56starchy carbs and processed food for energy.
- 22:01See yourself already with energy.
- 22:07I want you to see this version of you on a weekday, maybe a
- 22:13Tuesday or Wednesday. And I want you to see that
- 22:17version of you having a cool drink of maybe good quality
- 22:25bottled water, perhaps iced tea or maybe a cold alcohol free
- 22:37lager. See that you can enjoy that and
- 22:43it's enough that there is no need to drink alcohol during a
- 22:47weekday. Or maybe you see yourself making
- 22:53a herbal tea to maybe even imagine that version of you is
- 23:04having a fresh juice or a smoothie.
- 23:07The kind of things that would make you glow, make your eyes
- 23:14sparkle and your skin beam with energy and vitality.
- 23:25I want you to see that this version of you is not missing
- 23:28out on anything. This version of you gets the
- 23:32balance just right, and as time goes on, I want you to see
- 23:39yourself with a sober glow. Imagine it like everything about
- 23:48you is glowing. You're smiling more, spring in
- 23:53your stab, bright eye energy levels.
- 23:58See yourself being more active, whichever country you happen to
- 24:03be. See yourself with more energy,
- 24:07more of a lust for life, a desire to live life to the full
- 24:14and knowing you can do that because the less alcohol you
- 24:19drink, the better your quality of life becomes.
- 24:26See that version of you looking slimmer, healthier, brimming
- 24:30with confidence, glowing with energy.
- 24:37And if this future seems desirable, let me know by
- 24:42nodding your head. And then step into that version
- 24:47of you feel. Maybe it's a year or two from
- 24:51now. You've been like this way for a
- 24:54while. And I want you to imagine it's
- 24:57some random weekday, like a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
- 25:01And it has been stressful. There has been something that
- 25:06has triggered you in some way and yet feel no desire to drink
- 25:12alcohol. Because after doing this for a
- 25:16year or two, you now know that alcohol is not needed to manage
- 25:24your emotions. Maybe it can be good for social
- 25:31situations on a weekend, but you don't need it during the week.
- 25:36And in doing so, feel that sense of self-control, self-care, sky
- 25:46high self esteem, but more importantly, feel this glow of
- 25:51energy and vitality that comes from getting the balance just
- 25:57right. I want you to mentally rehearse
- 26:02that if you were to ask someone to go and get you some wine,
- 26:09they would just remind you that that's not you anymore.
- 26:15They would look at you like you're out of character, you
- 26:21know? And they know the drinking one
- 26:25or two glasses on a Friday or Saturday or a Sunday lunch is
- 26:31totally fine. But drinking more than that not
- 26:37only comes with diminishing returns, but triggers your body
- 26:42into feeling sluggish and lousy. And you're too smart for that.
- 26:49You don't want that anymore. So if this future version of you
- 26:55feels desirable, appealing, the kind of future that a few small
- 27:04changes can lead to this place, let me know by nodding your
- 27:07head. Feel like you're returning to
- 27:11the present and start to think about what you will do
- 27:17immediately. A letter you will write to
- 27:22yourself, or a message you will record, or a conversation with
- 27:30someone important that used to facilitate alcohol during the
- 27:35week, and you want to turn them into an ally, not an enabler.
- 27:45Imagine doing those things. Imagine how good it would feel
- 27:49on a Sunday evening to pour any leftover wine away, knowing that
- 27:56this solidifies this new identity, the version of you
- 28:00that simply glows. And if you get a sense of what
- 28:07not you could do next, but you will do next, let me know by
- 28:09nodding your head. It's time to leave this cinema.
- 28:16But you leave with a clear pathway, knowing that you could
- 28:22choose to carry on as you have been, but knowing it takes you
- 28:28to a place where you don't want to go, to feel like you've laid
- 28:33the tracks for a new path, that the train is already in motion.
- 28:39It's just about turning a thought into a behaviour that
- 28:47you do for the first time. And the more you do it, the more
- 28:51it builds a habit that takes your life into a healthy future
- 28:56of vitality and a lovely glow. So as you leave the cinema, get
- 29:04a glimpse of that version of you in the future, glowing with
- 29:09energy, vitality, slim and confident, knowing that you did
- 29:17that. So imagine walking up a
- 29:20staircase, a staircase that leads to a balcony, and imagine
- 29:27being on that balcony, looking out over a wonderful view,
- 29:33knowing that now is the time to return to the present, but with
- 29:38a change that takes your life in a wonderful direction.
- 29:44So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 29:49nose. Just wiggle your fingers and
- 29:53wiggle your toes. Connect fully into the here and
- 29:55the now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 30:00You will awaken feeling resolute in your intention to be the
- 30:07healthiest, happiest, glowing version of you.
- 30:11Starting to count 123, waking up 456 more alert. 7-8.
- 30:20Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910 Wide awake,
- 30:24Wide awake. Wide awake.
