- 0:00Well, hello, and welcome to the Modern Ian podcast.
- 0:05I'm your host, Kimberly Roberts of Sulfian, and I am so glad
- 0:08you're here. I want to take a moment to help
- 0:11you understand what this space is all about, especially if
- 0:15you're new here, and how this podcast can support you.
- 0:20This podcast is really geared for busy women, especially over
- 0:25the age of 40, who feel like they're constantly on the go,
- 0:29taking care of everything and everyone.
- 0:32But you know what? Not taking care of themselves.
- 0:36And over time, that can start to look like feeling burnt out,
- 0:40overwhelmed, tense, tired, but wired or just disconnected.
- 0:47What I share here is a different approach.
- 0:51Instead of pushing harder or doing more, we focus on slowing
- 0:56down, supporting your nervous system, and creating a sense of
- 1:00safety in your body. Because here's the thing, when
- 1:05your body feels safe, everything starts to shift.
- 1:09Your energy improves, your mind becomes clear, your body
- 1:13softens, and you begin to feel more like yourself again.
- 1:19Inside this podcast, you'll find simple practices using in yoga,
- 1:23acupressure, reflexology, breath work, mindfulness.
- 1:28These are all designed to fit into what I call real life, even
- 1:33when you only have a couple of minutes.
- 1:36And if you're looking for more support, you can come and join
- 1:39me inside my Patreon. That's where I share full yen,
- 1:43yoga classes, guided practices for emotional support, nervous
- 1:47system reset, and even nourishing recipes to support
- 1:51your overall well-being. It's really a space where you
- 1:56can go deeper at your own pace and in a way that feels
- 2:00supportive, not overwhelming. So whether you're listening
- 2:05while walking, resting, or just taking a moment for yourself,
- 2:10I'm so glad you're here because you've landed in the right
- 2:12place. Take a deep breath, let those
- 2:16shoulders soften, and let's begin.
- 2:18Well, if you were here for last week's episode, I dove in deep
- 2:23about anxiety and menopause. This week, I want to shift gears
- 2:29a little bit. I want to talk about what really
- 2:32happens during perimenopause. So this is the part before
- 2:37menopause happens. OK, So grab yourself a bevy of
- 2:42choice. Maybe sit on the couch.
- 2:45Maybe you're outside walking as you listen to this episode.
- 2:49But let's get started. So there's a moment many women
- 2:56experience in perimenopause where they're thinking, what the
- 3:01heck is happening to me? Like suddenly it's like, OK, I
- 3:07slept well last night, but the night before I slept like crap.
- 3:13My anxiety, I didn't have any problems with what happened
- 3:15yesterday, but two days ago I got anxious for I don't know
- 3:19why. And let's talk about frustration
- 3:24or impatience that just like, bruise out of nowhere and your
- 3:31overall energy just becomes like less predictable and stable.
- 3:39And even things that never used to bother you before, suddenly
- 3:44you're like, this is pissing me off or this is overwhelming me.
- 3:51And so many women assume that, uh oh, like there's something
- 3:55wrong with me. But what I want to talk about
- 4:00today is this. I've said this before about
- 4:04menopause. Menopause is not just a hormonal
- 4:07transition. It's a nervous system transition
- 4:11too. So is perimenopause.
- 4:16And once you start to understand that, everything starts making a
- 4:22lot more sense. And if you go back to one of my
- 4:26older episodes where I talk about why high functioning women
- 4:33over 40 are still in survival mode, like this is going to make
- 4:38so much sense when we start talking about nervous system
- 4:42regulation. All right, OK, so let's get
- 4:46started here. So perimenopause is officially
- 4:52that transition that leads up to menopause.
- 4:57It's the beginning years before a woman's final menstrual cycle
- 5:02happens, right? And for some women, it can start
- 5:06late, like late 40s, early 50s. For some women it can start in
- 5:13their late 20s or early 30s. I know for me it started in my
- 5:17mid 30s. I started to notice shifts like
- 5:20with my sleep, energy levels, digestion even.
- 5:27And As for my nervous system being regulated, yeah, I was
- 5:31nowhere in near that zone back then.
- 5:35There was not a whole lot of nervous system regulation
- 5:37happening. But this is the time when your
- 5:42estrogen and progesterone start fluctuating.
- 5:45Now it's typically progesterone kind of starts to decline first,
- 5:51and that's why women often notice like the sleep
- 5:54irregularities. OK.
- 5:56But it's not like a straight linear path.
- 6:00It's not like, oh, well, estrogen declines this amount
- 6:02and progesterone declines that amount.
- 6:04Like, no, it's very unpredictable and it's different
- 6:09depending on the woman. And I will tell you, if I hadn't
- 6:12known what I know now, back when I was in perimenopause, I would
- 6:18have paid way more attention and been far more diligent about
- 6:25regulating my nervous system. Because I will tell you that
- 6:31your hormones can wreak havoc in your body if you're not
- 6:37regulating your nervous system. And I want to say that your
- 6:41hormones affect so much more than just your period.
- 6:45Like they influence your mood, your sleep, your stress
- 6:49resilience, brain function, emotional regulation, nervous
- 6:54system itself. Like a lot of women associate,
- 6:59you know, menopause and perimenopause with the physical
- 7:02changes in the body that happens.
- 7:05But it's not always that it's there's so much more.
- 7:08OK. And when all of these hormones
- 7:11start shifting during perimenopause, this is when your
- 7:17nervous system starts becoming more sensitive to.
- 7:21This is the beginning of like real transition in your nervous
- 7:25system and why regulating your nervous system is so important.
- 7:33So why does everything feel so much more intense?
- 7:38Like the anxiety, the irritability, the overwhelm, the
- 7:42emotional sensitivity? Like this is not weakness, it's
- 7:49literally Physiology, OK? It's the buffering system is
- 7:55changing. OK?
- 7:57Your nervous system has less tolerance for chronic stress,
- 8:01overstimulation and constant pushing, which again, for women
- 8:06over 40, especially if they're in a high functioning state.
- 8:12This is why regulating their nervous system is so important.
- 8:19And honestly, when women start to hit perimenopause, they
- 8:23realize, you know what, like this way that I've been living
- 8:28like this is just not sustainable anymore.
- 8:30Like I just can't do it. You don't have the energy, you
- 8:33don't have the patience, you don't have the drive.
- 8:36You don't even have the ambition to be like, keep pushing
- 8:39forward. You're like, I'm done.
- 8:42Like there's got to be something.
- 8:44And this is when often the high functioning woman crashes.
- 8:50OK, she's been in. Just think about it.
- 8:52She's been in survival mode for decades.
- 8:56OK, I can totally relate to that.
- 8:58When I was married to an alcoholic, I spent decades high
- 9:03functioning but not emotionally stable and certainly not
- 9:08regulated in my nervous system. So when these women have spent
- 9:14decades holding everything together, pushing through
- 9:19exhaustion because let's face it, you're a little bit younger
- 9:22than so you kind of have the energy to push it even though
- 9:26you really shouldn't be. This is where you're still
- 9:29prioritizing everybody else and you're overriding your own
- 9:34body's needs. So when perimenopause hits,
- 9:39finally the body says, yeah, we need a different approach here
- 9:45because what we've been doing for the last several decades is
- 9:48just not working anymore. And the body is always
- 9:57communicating with you, always 365247.
- 10:03So sometimes the way that the body communicates with you
- 10:08during this transition is anxiety heightens, sleep
- 10:12disrupts, you're more tired, fatigued, you burn out a lot
- 10:19faster, and there's a whole lot of emotional volatility, right?
- 10:26Like that one tiny little thing just makes you snap.
- 10:31And that's not all because your body is failing.
- 10:35It's because it's trying to tell you, hey, we need to regulate
- 10:39here. This is not sustainable way of
- 10:41living anymore. This is why nervous system
- 10:49regulation matters so much. Once you hit perimenopause and
- 10:54you start shifting to menopause. I'm telling you because I've
- 10:58already been through perimenopause and I'm in
- 11:00menopause now. Learn from what I made mistakes
- 11:07about. I did not prioritize nervous
- 11:13system regulation enough. I did at times, but I certainly
- 11:19didn't make it something regular or consistent when honestly, I
- 11:24hate to use the word should, but I should have given the
- 11:28situation and the climate I was in at the time.
- 11:33So let me say this really clearly, This is the time when
- 11:36nervous system regulation is foundational and it has to be
- 11:43that way, not optional, not whenever you feel like it.
- 11:48It has to be consistent and foundational in your life if you
- 11:53want to start to coast perimenopause in a much better
- 11:57way. And I will tell you this, and
- 11:59again, this is based on my own experience, If you don't start
- 12:05taking care of yourself during perimenopause, when you hit
- 12:09menopause, it's not going to be a fun roller coaster ride.
- 12:17And for me, and again, every woman is different, every
- 12:21woman's body is different. Everyone's lifestyle is
- 12:24different for, but for me, during perimenopause, I ended up
- 12:28having to go on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and
- 12:32I really didn't want to go on it.
- 12:35But I didn't have a choice given the situation that I was in at
- 12:40the time. But I will tell you that if I
- 12:44had made my nervous system a higher priority, I can guarantee
- 12:51you because I know myself very well, I can guarantee you that I
- 12:55would not have had to go on bioidentical HRT.
- 13:00But again, we learn, right? So it is what it is.
- 13:05But you see, when your nervous system is already so stressed
- 13:08out, your hormonal fluctuations are more intense.
- 13:16But the body is like, well, it needs support.
- 13:22But then the symptoms, once you get, once the support starts
- 13:26being layered in regularly, consistently, the symptoms start
- 13:34to soften. This is why things like rest,
- 13:40making sure you're getting enough sleep, proper
- 13:44nourishment, OK, proper balance of protein to fiber to carbs, so
- 13:51important breath work, acupressure, meditation, just a
- 13:57slower rhythm to life. And of course, yin yoga.
- 14:01These become so important during during Menopauna perimenopause.
- 14:06Now when I was in perimenopause, I definitely did yin.
- 14:10I didn't do as much breath work as I do now.
- 14:13And I wish I had of because I just I there's nothing better
- 14:18for me then 5 minutes of breath work in the morning and 5
- 14:22minutes of breath work at night before I literally close my
- 14:25eyes. I certainly didn't get enough
- 14:28rest. I should have prioritized my
- 14:31sleep a lot more. Nourishment.
- 14:34I was, I was pretty good in terms of like I ate clean, but
- 14:38my ratio of protein to fiber was not the best.
- 14:45SO all of these things, they're not luxuries, they're nervous
- 14:53system support. I want you to start to think of
- 14:55it that way. This is why on my Patreon, I
- 14:58have nourishment included there. Like I put up free posts every
- 15:08week on food so recipes, but I also give you the why.
- 15:14Like why is this good to eat? What does this do for you?
- 15:17How does this help your nervous system?
- 15:19Because this is the type of stuff that I wish I would have
- 15:21had back when I was in perimenopause.
- 15:25I also have like insightful posts, you know, three times a
- 15:29week where it's like, you know what?
- 15:30Try this little tip and try this little technique.
- 15:36I even have like an entire free program called Ground and Glow.
- 15:44It's a menopause, 10 day menopause program.
- 15:46But I'm going to be honest with you, if you're in perimenopause,
- 15:49I would go and hop on that program anyway because it's
- 15:54foundational for supporting your nervous system and it's free and
- 15:57it's 10 days. And this is, again, why I'm so
- 16:03passionate about helping women over the age of 40.
- 16:08Because as you get older, what you can tolerate and what you
- 16:12can navigate really starts to shift.
- 16:17And also what women start to realize is that what they used
- 16:22to do that worked for them before, no longer does.
- 16:27And here's why. It's not that what you might be
- 16:30doing is wrong, it's not that it's because your body is asking
- 16:35for more force or push, it's actually asking for more
- 16:40support. So don't ditch anything that you
- 16:44might be doing currently, but start to think about layering on
- 16:49more things that help now. This is why the modern yin
- 16:55perspective for me, it's so important because it's really
- 17:00about learning how to work with your body during this transition
- 17:06in your life. Not trying to fight it, not
- 17:12trying to push through it, because we've all been there and
- 17:16we've all done that. And not because we're trying to
- 17:21treat symptoms like they're an inconvenience.
- 17:24They're not. They're communication, just like
- 17:27your emotions. Your emotions are indicators of
- 17:32where you were at. And we have to start listening
- 17:37more. We have to start pausing more to
- 17:41be able to listen. Because when you're just running
- 17:44around like a hamster on a wheel, guess what?
- 17:49There's no space for you to listen.
- 17:52So you got to pause and listen and start supporting and start
- 17:57regulating because you know what a lot of women start to think,
- 18:04oh, perimenopause, it's like the beginning of the end.
- 18:10It's the end of my vitality. No, it's not.
- 18:15It's just a recalibration season.
- 18:19And it's often an invitation into a more sustainable, stable
- 18:27way of living. And let's face it, when we start
- 18:32getting over 40, like we don't want to be on the emotional
- 18:37roller coaster ride anymore. We don't want to be physically
- 18:41up and down like a yo-yo. Like we want a slower pace.
- 18:50We want more time for ourselves, without the guilt, without the
- 18:56shame, without the punishment. And this is the kind of support
- 19:04that I focus on inside my Patreon.
- 19:07It's literally devoted for women over the age of 40.
- 19:13I am very much a proponent of nervous system regulation, if
- 19:18you haven't figured that out yet by either this podcast episode
- 19:22or several of my podcast episodes, because I'm all about
- 19:27that. I'm all about deep sleep.
- 19:29Like when I was younger, I could push through getting a crappy
- 19:32night's sleep, but now I don't have the patience for that.
- 19:36Like, sleep is my number one priority.
- 19:40Emotional balance, because again, I don't like being on an
- 19:44emotional roller coaster. Yes, I'm going to get angry.
- 19:47Yes, I'm going to worry. Yes, I'm going to be scared, but
- 19:50I don't want to live in those emotions all the time.
- 19:55I want to have some resilience there.
- 19:58And of course, Ioffer lots of yin yoga.
- 20:02I even have acupressure and reflexology to help you as well
- 20:06with balance. And again, let's talk about the
- 20:10food. Because I feel like, you know
- 20:14what nervous system regulation very much includes how you eat
- 20:20because what you put in is what you get out.
- 20:23And I, I'll be honest with you, you're probably going to laugh
- 20:27at this because I still laugh about this part.
- 20:29But when I was in high school, I remember like it was the year
- 20:34where, OK, we start taking home economics, right?
- 20:37Like that's cooking and cleaning and sewing.
- 20:40And I was like, I remember saying to my, one of my
- 20:44teachers, I was like, I don't want to take home act.
- 20:48What do I want to do that for? I, I think this is useless.
- 20:54I didn't want to take it. Of course I had to take it and I
- 20:57failed. I failed home act.
- 20:59I couldn't sew a button to save my life and I burnt everything
- 21:03that I made. But now I will tell you that,
- 21:09you know, you're probably wondering, well, how the heck
- 21:11have you survived so long? Well, I'll tell you that when I
- 21:15met my husband, he was a chef. So guess who did all the
- 21:19cooking? He did.
- 21:22And we had, we hired a cleaner. But when I moved out on my own,
- 21:29I very quickly realized I got to learn how to cook, and I got to
- 21:38learn how to cook well and inexpensively.
- 21:42But I want to be able to cook nutritious food like I was
- 21:45having before. So I learned.
- 21:48Did I make lots of mistakes? Did I burn lots of things on the
- 21:51stove? Absolutely, at first.
- 21:53Did I make some stuff that I tasted afterwards and went, oh,
- 21:56my God, this is disgusting. This didn't work.
- 21:59Yeah. But now I will tell you, I'm
- 22:01going to pat myself on the back here.
- 22:03I love to cook. And what I cook is absolutely
- 22:06phenomenal. So This is why I'm so passionate
- 22:11about food. If you wonder why else I have
- 22:14that on my Patreon. And I wanna say to you that this
- 22:21transition in your life, it's natural.
- 22:26You can't avoid it, but it needs support.
- 22:30It doesn't need silence and it doesn't need ignoring.
- 22:39So if perimenopause has made you feel like your bodily body is
- 22:43suddenly changed overnight, I want to tell you something.
- 22:47First of all, it didn't just change overnight.
- 22:49It's been changing for a while. It's just maybe you haven't been
- 22:52noticing so much, but you're not imagining any transitions and
- 22:58your nervous system is adapting to a major transition.
- 23:02Perimenopause is a major transition, and then menopause
- 23:05is even a greater transition. And so perimenopause requires
- 23:15you to be a little softer, a little steadier, and find a more
- 23:20supportive way of living. And that means more rest, more
- 23:26regulation, more compassion for yourself.
- 23:30OK. This is why I call it modern
- 23:33yin, because it's where stillness does the real work.
- 23:40And perimenopause, it's often the season where the body stops
- 23:45tolerating the life that the nervous system was already
- 23:49struggling to carry for so long. And I'm going to leave you with
- 23:55that and let that sink in, and I'll see you in the next
- 23:59episode. Today's episode supported you in
- 24:03any way. The next best step is to come
- 24:06practice with me. Inside my Patreon.
- 24:09I share simple yin yoga, acupressure, reflexology, and
- 24:14nervous system practices designed for busy women who want
- 24:18to feel calm, grounded, and back in their bodies without needing
- 24:22a ton of time. You'll also find full classes,
- 24:26guided practices, and even nourishing recipes to support
- 24:30your well-being. Until next time, take a deep
- 24:34breath, slow things down, and take care of you, and I'll see
- 24:38you in the next episode. Thanks so much for pressing play
- 24:43today.
