Latest / Sidekick's What Just Shipped / HubSpot Customer Agent: where should it go live first? | Shipped Aug 2026
Transcript
- Dana (AI host): Your customer agent might be live on the easiest channel, not the one where customers are actually waiting. Rob (AI host): HubSpot now reads your conversation data and recommends which channels to deploy it on first. Dana (AI host): A channel needs real traffic to qualify, and the one setting that skews every number is your office hours. Narrator (AI voice): This is Sidekick's What Just Shipped, presented by Sidekick Strategies. Narrator (AI voice): Your hosts, Rob and Dana, are AI. Narrator (AI voice): The voices are synthetic, the research is real, and humans check every claim before it reaches you. Dana (AI host): Worth saying: Rob and I are AI hosts. Dana (AI host): We haven't deployed a customer agent, and we're reading HubSpot's help article, updated September third, 2026. Rob (AI host): For the record, today I'm playing a support director with chat, email, and a Facebook page, and no evening staff. Dana (AI host): Then you're the target. Dana (AI host): HubSpot's customer agent can now give you personalized deployment recommendations: the channels where it can add the most value. Rob (AI host): Based on what? Dana (AI host): Your conversation volume, response time, unassigned conversations, SLA adherence, and historical conversation trends. It's generated automatically. Rob (AI host): Give me the real-world version. Dana (AI host): HubSpot's example is Sprocket Co., which misses nearly half its live chats when the team is away. Dana (AI host): The recommendation: deploy the customer agent on chat with fifty percent coverage, to answer routine questions after hours and free up reps for complex issues. Rob (AI host): That's my evenings. Nobody's online after six, and the chat widget just sits there. Rob (AI host): Which subscriptions does this come with? Dana (AI host): Professional or Enterprise on Marketing, Sales, Service, Content, Data Hub, Smart CRM, or Revenue Hub. Dana (AI host): You need customer agent editor permissions and an assigned seat. Rob (AI host): And what does it cost? Dana (AI host): Deploying the agent to channels needs HubSpot Credits, and they're only used when a conversation is resolved. Rob (AI host): Which channels qualify? Dana (AI host): A channel needs at least thirty conversations a month to get a recommendation. Dana (AI host): Channels where the agent is already live are left out. Rob (AI host): So my quiet Facebook page might not show up at all. Rob (AI host): And my chat, where the agent already runs on weekends? Dana (AI host): If it's already deployed there, that channel drops off the list. Dana (AI host): The recommendations are for where it isn't yet. Dana (AI host): Right. Now, where to find it. Go to Service, then Customer Agent. Dana (AI host): In the left sidebar, click Deploy, then Channels. Rob (AI host): And what's on that page? Dana (AI host): Six numbers per channel. Total volume, the average conversations per month over the last ninety days. Dana (AI host): After-hours traffic. Dana (AI host): Conversations unassigned, meaning it took more than ten minutes to assign or never got assigned. Dana (AI host): Response time to the first human reply. Recommended coverage, the share the agent could handle. Dana (AI host): And SLA adherence. Rob (AI host): Wait. After hours according to whom? Dana (AI host): Your configured office hours. Dana (AI host): If you haven't set them, HubSpot uses Monday to Friday, nine to five, in your local time. Dana (AI host): And without SLAs, it benchmarks against four hours for email and ten minutes for chat. Rob (AI host): So if my office hours are wrong, the after-hours number is wrong. Dana (AI host): That's the setting that skews everything. Fix it first. Rob (AI host): What are the colored badges? Dana (AI host): Each recommendation gets one. Dana (AI host): Risk means a problem the agent may help with, like slow after-hours responses or lots of unassigned chats. Dana (AI host): Opportunity means something it can build on, like high volume. Rob (AI host): And then I deploy? Dana (AI host): Click a channel for the full breakdown, then Impact breakdown to compare your current setup with the recommended one. Dana (AI host): To go live, enter the working hours, conversation coverage, and assignment rules, then click Deploy. Rob (AI host): So nothing goes live until I click. Rob (AI host): Good, because my boss will ask why we picked chat over email. Dana (AI host): And you'll have the answer on screen: the metrics, the badge, and the comparison from Impact breakdown. Dana (AI host): Right. Dana (AI host): Why it matters: the first channel you pick is backed by your own numbers, not a hunch. Rob (AI host): Who should run this first? Dana (AI host): Our research points to support operations leaders who own the customer agent setup, RevOps admins who need to check routing before a new channel goes live, and growing companies with an after-hours gap. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Hey, it's George B. Thomas from Sidekick Strategies. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Full honesty, this is my AI voice clone, made with my permission. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): The hard part of Breeze isn't capability. It's getting your team to actually use it. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): In our AI for HubSpot Teams workshop, I work onsite with your revenue team to build role-by-role Breeze playbooks and wire real AI workflows into your live portal. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): You also leave with an honest map of what's free and what's gated. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): It's under workshops at Sidekick Strategies dot com. Rob (AI host): Dana, what's changed since we first covered this in August? Dana (AI host): A few things. Dana (AI host): Our August write-up listed four signals: volume, after-hours traffic, unassigned conversations, and response time. Dana (AI host): HubSpot's help article now shows six, adding recommended coverage and SLA adherence. Dana (AI host): And our research in October covers asking Breeze Assistant about deployment by agent name, which HubSpot's September product updates confirm, with coverage estimates and estimated resolutions. Rob (AI host): Is there anything in our August write-up you'd hold loosely? Dana (AI host): Our August write-up says the default is a "Start Small" recommendation. Dana (AI host): We couldn't find that phrase on HubSpot's current pages, so go by the coverage the recommendation actually shows you. Rob (AI host): Then give me the plan, for the support director with no evening staff. Dana (AI host): Step one: set your office hours and your SLAs, so the after-hours and adherence numbers mean something. Rob (AI host): Step two: open Deploy, then Channels, and note which channels show Risk and which show Opportunity. Dana (AI host): Step three: click your top channel and open Impact breakdown. Compare today with the recommended coverage. Rob (AI host): Step four: before you deploy, check your ticket routing, so the conversations the agent hands off still reach a human. Rob (AI host): Our October research is blunt here: automations built for an all-human team need a review. Dana (AI host): Step five: deploy on one channel, at the suggested coverage, with clear working hours. Dana (AI host): Then watch resolutions, since that's what uses credits. Rob (AI host): And step six: after a month, come back to the Channels page, see which channels now qualify, and decide whether the next one earns a deployment. Dana (AI host): One more from our October research: Breeze explains and recommends, but it doesn't deploy for you. Dana (AI host): You still make the call. Rob (AI host): Which is how I'd want it. And accurate office hours are a prerequisite, not an afterthought. Dana (AI host): My skeptic has gone quiet. Rob (AI host): Because the evening chats finally have a plan. Dana (AI host): One last thought: fix your office hours before you trust the numbers. Rob (AI host): All our sources are linked in the show notes, and more of our research is at Sidekick Strategies dot com. Dana (AI host): Thanks a ton for your time. Rob (AI host): Let the data pick the channel. Narrator (AI voice): Sidekick's What Just Shipped is presented by Sidekick Strategies, with AI hosts Rob and Dana and AI-generated music.
