Latest / Libido Lounge / The Link Between Infertility and Low Libido with Dr. Aumatma Simmons
Transcript
- 0:04Welcome to the libido lounge where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido.
- 0:09We believe that fabulous sex is important to health as exercise and good food.
- 0:23Hey, everybody.
- 0:24Welcome back to another episode of the lounge.
- 0:27I'm your host libido expert, doctor Diane.
- 0:29And I'm so excited about introducing to you my friend, my colleague, another naturopathic
- 0:36doctor, doctor Amatma Simmons.
- 0:38He's doing this amazing online event coming up talking about fertility and libido and how
- 0:45these things really intersect is what we're talking about today.
- 0:49Mhmm.
- 0:49So I'm so excited to have you, doctor Imatma.
- 0:51Thank you for joining me.
- 0:52Thanks for having me, doctor Diane.
- 0:55Well, let's jump in.
- 0:56So because we love to talk about libido on the lounge, can you tell us initially some of the
- 1:03things you see kinda relating libido to infertility?
- 1:08And I think, you know, connecting some of the thing that we see around this vicious cycle
- 1:14that people get in.
- 1:15Right?
- 1:15Where it's like, okay.
- 1:16We're trying to conceive and maybe it's hard.
- 1:19And then all of this pressure goes on sex, and it goes on intimacy in the relationship.
- 1:25So
- 1:26Mhmm.
- 1:26Can we just dive in?
- 1:28Just let's get right to it on talking a little bit more about that that vicious cycle that
- 1:33people get into.
- 1:34Yeah.
- 1:34I I feel like a lot of people go into fertility thinking it's gonna be fun and exciting, and
- 1:42we're gonna have lots of sex.
- 1:45And then they get into the reality.
- 1:47And the reality is what we're being told is that we should time our sex, that we should
- 1:58only do every other day during the fertile window.
- 2:02We're because of the pressure of it, it becomes almost the antithesis of what we want, which is
- 2:13this easy, fun, lively experience, and then, boom, we're in the fertility world.
- 2:21And everyone's transition is different.
- 2:24Right?
- 2:24Like, some people go into it and they're like, oh, we're gonna have fun, and we have all this
- 2:28energy, and we're, like, we're having fun, and we're doing this.
- 2:31And that energy will last last max twelve months max.
- 2:38And that's literally the amount of time that doctors want you to be trying before they will
- 2:45do any testing.
- 2:47So the problem is it's almost a conflict of interest because doctors are like, well, try
- 2:52for twelve months.
- 2:54And in reality, people knew going into it that the max amount of time and bandwidth and kind
- 3:01of energy that I can put into this is about twelve months, you would wanna be doing things
- 3:07way sooner as far as testing and understanding what's happening.
- 3:10And are there any blocks?
- 3:12And should we work on stuff?
- 3:13Because if your timeline is twelve months, you're really setting yourself up for failure
- 3:20if you don't get pregnant in those twelve months.
- 3:23Because now every month after that point where you've reached your internal limit is gonna be
- 3:29extra.
- 3:30It's gonna be, oh my god.
- 3:32I can't do this.
- 3:32I can't do this anymore.
- 3:34And it's both partners.
- 3:36Right?
- 3:36Like, we often assume, oh, it's always the the women that are giving up and don't really wanna
- 3:41have sex and all that.
- 3:43No.
- 3:43In this case, it it often fill flips the script.
- 3:46And, honestly, I feel like men have a shorter bandwidth than women.
- 3:52Right?
- 3:53They're like, I don't wanna feel this pressure for twelve months.
- 3:56I don't even know if I wanna feel this pressure for three months.
- 4:00So you'll feel like the male partner is kind of disengaging and is finding himself being
- 4:07distant and is like, oh my god.
- 4:10Here she goes again.
- 4:11Like, calling me at work, trying to come home and have sex.
- 4:15Like, it's just not what I wanna be doing with my time.
- 4:19So it and it's not that they don't wanna have a child.
- 4:22They just don't wanna do it under this circumstance of pressure.
- 4:26And I'm on her timeline, and she I'm, like, at her beck and call.
- 4:31You know?
- 4:32And yeah.
- 4:33So there's just so many, like, contradictions that I feel like if we cleared up the
- 4:39misconceptions from the beginning and if people had more awareness about what they're getting
- 4:45into, the pressure just wouldn't be there.
- 4:48And we would have a whole different dynamic in our sex lives if we didn't have that pressure.
- 4:55Yeah.
- 4:55You're I love this intro to this conversation because, obviously, we're talking about
- 5:00fertility here.
- 5:00And, also, I think this is just so easy to, like, extrapolate out and be like, oh, this is,
- 5:06like, fertility or not fertility.
- 5:08Sometimes this is just what happens with, you know, with libido and with intimacy in general
- 5:13is, like, various things in life put pressure on or performance on and
- 5:17Yeah.
- 5:18You know, and things change.
- 5:19But my question question for you is this, because one of the things I talk a lot about in
- 5:23my work and then on this podcast is the concept of scheduling sex around, like, even, say, post
- 5:30having children or just being busy.
- 5:33Right?
- 5:33It's so easy for that novelty dopamine and all those feelings of young love to wear off.
- 5:39And then without prioritizing sex in some ways, like scheduling it like our gym time
- 5:45Mhmm.
- 5:45Oftentimes, then it's, it doesn't happen.
- 5:49Right.
- 5:49So my curiosity is, like, interesting of, like, okay.
- 5:53So scheduling sex, and we do this in a way when we're not trying to conceive in a way of, like,
- 5:59fun, you know, and playful and prioritizing.
- 6:03But it's interesting then that oftentimes, like, what I'm hearing is, like, when we
- 6:08schedule it because of trying to conceive and needing to meet that ovulatory window, then all
- 6:14of a sudden, that schedule becomes pressure.
- 6:17So is there my question for you is, like, is there, like, a mindset shift that people can
- 6:22begin to make to still, you know, have to find that, of course, you know, that ovulatory
- 6:28window if we are having, you know, non, help with, like, IVF or any of those other
- 6:33mechanisms, you know, needing to find that I ovulatory window to conceive, can we do that
- 6:37and schedule that and switch our minds so that it becomes almost like this scheduled sex
- 6:44that's done in this playful way without that intention.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:48I I feel like the biggest shift is, like, a small shift, and that shift is instead of
- 6:54scheduling sex, schedule intimacy.
- 6:58Schedule, like, we're gonna be naked and sexy together, and it may or may not be sex.
- 7:04It may be just like playing or flirting or, like, cuddling or whatever.
- 7:13There's so many things besides sex that can lead to sex, but they don't have to.
- 7:20And I feel like that's the big one, is the we have to have sex.
- 7:26And I feel like our culture has created this pressure, but science is not it was not based
- 7:33in our physiology.
- 7:34Right?
- 7:35Like, if you have sex during your fertile window, and I define that by actually, like,
- 7:43multiple days before you ovulate, if you're having sex in that window, somewhere in that
- 7:50window, and you've optimized the egg and optimized sperm health, the sperm are gonna
- 7:57stick stick around for five or six days.
- 8:00Matter of fact, they're gonna be more available if you had sex before your egg was released
- 8:08because they need to swim all the way upstream and find that egg.
- 8:12So if they're hanging out there already, it makes it a lot easier.
- 8:16A lot, lot, lot easier.
- 8:18So, really, like, if you're during that window, you don't have to be like, oh my god.
- 8:25It's positive.
- 8:26It's positive.
- 8:26It's positive.
- 8:27LH is positive right now.
- 8:29And it's like, okay.
- 8:31Really, like, let's back off.
- 8:34And if the sperm are there, they're gonna be there.
- 8:38It's okay.
- 8:39Like, there's no pressure.
- 8:41And, like, the number of times, I would say the majority number of times that women will come
- 8:49back after everything is optimized, the number of times couples come in, and they're like, we
- 8:54didn't even expect to get pregnant in this cycle because we didn't actually have sex when
- 8:58she was ovulating.
- 8:59And I'm like, yeah.
- 9:00But you had sex three days before that.
- 9:02So all good.
- 9:04You're pregnant.
- 9:06And they'll and they'll try to fight it.
- 9:08They'll be like, oh, but no.
- 9:10Like, it couldn't have happened that time.
- 9:13And it's always the case.
- 9:16And, like and I say always in, like, not every single time, but a lot of the times, that's the
- 9:22majority of our stories.
- 9:25And I feel like it's because there wasn't the pressure.
- 9:29It's because, oh, we're feeling we're feeling each other, and we're wanting to be intimate,
- 9:36and it's that's driving the sex equation more than it's the right time.
- 9:43Right?
- 9:43And it's like yeah.
- 9:46So if we can just separate those two, we get a lot more.
- 9:51And then it once those are separate, then really we're focused on, okay, like, what are
- 9:57the things that are gonna help build intimacy?
- 10:00What are the things that we talked about this on, in your interview, the oxytocin.
- 10:05Like, what's gonna get that oxytocin release?
- 10:08How do we get that bonding going?
- 10:10Or how do we get that oxytocin in men is amazing for sperm health.
- 10:15Like, let's get you oxidized.
- 10:18Oxitocized.
- 10:20I don't know what the word is.
- 10:21We're gonna work on that.
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:23That would be cool.
- 10:26So if we can really focus on something different, something else besides the sex, the
- 10:36physical act of sex, then everything else that comes after is bonus.
- 10:42It's like, we're not focused on that.
- 10:43We don't even care if you have sex.
- 10:45And they're like, what?
- 10:47We need to have sex if we're gonna have a baby.
- 10:49Yes.
- 10:50But your body knows what to do.
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:53And you're, like, if you're in tune, if you're feeling connected, if you're feeling that
- 10:58emotional bond, you couldn't wanna have sex.
- 11:01Like, sex is the outcome of that.
- 11:03It's not the action that creates the intimacy.
- 11:07And I know it's a little different for men.
- 11:09Like, men need physical sex to feel connected.
- 11:13But I think that driver for the desire for connection is not gonna be pressure.
- 11:19Like, you're not gonna pressure your man into wanting to have sex with you.
- 11:23Like, it just doesn't work that way.
- 11:26And if you do wanna pressure him, seduce him, don't force him into it.
- 11:31Right?
- 11:31Like, pressure him.
- 11:33Like, if you leave his house, he'll never have a child.
- 11:35Like, that's not gonna help him feel sexy.
- 11:38Right.
- 11:38Yeah.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:40That is super useful.
- 11:43Yeah.
- 11:43And I I appreciate what you're saying too.
- 11:45I've been calling, like, sex dates.
- 11:46I've actually been calling them intimacy escapades and, you know, talking about, like,
- 11:50this isn't just about sex.
- 11:52It's about intimacy.
- 11:53It's about you know, you have your emotional intimacy escapade.
- 11:56You have your cuddle intimacy escapade, and you can have your sex intimacy escapade.
- 12:00But
- 12:01Mhmm.
- 12:01Yeah.
- 12:01So much of what I hear in that too is like, alright.
- 12:04So if it is, you know, in this ovulatory fertile window time period, even if it's days
- 12:10before, you know, some days after, and you, you know, you are trying to conceive, can you even
- 12:15set that time but take the pressure off and just be like, pretend that this is just like a
- 12:20normal intimacy escapade.
- 12:22Right?
- 12:23And flirt and tease and do all the fun things, and and eventually, you'll get there.
- 12:28And wear the sexy lingerie.
- 12:30Yeah.
- 12:30And do do the things that you would do when you first met.
- 12:36Right?
- 12:36Like, when sex was still hot, do those things.
- 12:41Because I feel like it's it's really easy to get into the groove of, like, oh, we just need
- 12:46to have sex.
- 12:46Like, just have sex.
- 12:48Just come on.
- 12:48Just do it.
- 12:50And, like, that just feels it doesn't feel good ever.
- 12:54But specifically around fertility, it's not great.
- 12:58The other thing that I found really helpful is for women to stop monitoring their ovulation
- 13:05and let the partner do it instead.
- 13:09And the male partner in charge of monitoring the fertile window, they're really good at it.
- 13:17Once they learn how to do it, they're really good at it.
- 13:22And it puts him back in his masculine driver's seat to initiate sex.
- 13:28So now she's no longer the one that's like, time's ticking.
- 13:32Let's go.
- 13:33Now is the time.
- 13:34Instead, he is initiating, and he doesn't need to mention anything about your it's your time.
- 13:42Like, I just wanna have sets.
- 13:44And I'm initiating it, and I'm in the driver's seat.
- 13:48So now he's empowered to be in his masculine instead of the woman being in her masculine
- 13:55while trying to be feminine.
- 13:57I that is, I think, my favorite thing we've said today so far.
- 14:01I love like like, there's so many layers of that.
- 14:04Like you said, it's like not only taking the pressure off, but putting the man in his
- 14:09masculine and giving him that power to provide and letting a woman soften into her feminine
- 14:14and not have to worry and strut.
- 14:15There's layers upon layers.
- 14:17So ready.
- 14:18But the gym, I love
- 14:19it so much.
- 14:21Yeah.
- 14:21What about so are there any sort of, like, myths around fertility and and conception that
- 14:28you feel like are really important to break down while we're having this conversation?
- 14:34I think we've talked about quite a few of them, the ones specifically around sex.
- 14:38And I think the timing piece is really key because I feel like we drive that home so
- 14:44frequently.
- 14:45You go to your OB.
- 14:47The first thing you're gonna hear is, well, are you timing sex?
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:50It's like the worst advice ever.
- 14:53Like, should you only have sex when you have the LH surge?
- 14:56That seems so ridiculous to
- 14:58me.
- 14:59Right.
- 15:00And, like, it's putting all of your eggs into that one basket that is the LH surge.
- 15:07And, unfortunately, LH surge doesn't always mean ovulation.
- 15:12It is literally one hormone out of the many hormones that are happening.
- 15:18So I think that's the first myth.
- 15:20The second one is around the age piece, and I I think that that adds to the pressure.
- 15:27It's the whole, like, oh, the latest is at 32, our fertility starts going downhill.
- 15:33So it's not 35 anymore.
- 15:35It's 32.
- 15:36And you're too old.
- 15:40Your eggs are too old.
- 15:41It's like so many things around aging that we're just not a culture that likes aging,
- 15:48period.
- 15:49But when it comes to fertility, we have all these myths that are truly myths.
- 15:53The the idea that fertility declines at 35 came out of churches in France in the eighteen
- 16:01sixties that observed that women were not coming in to get children baptized after the
- 16:08age of 35.
- 16:09So they created this idea that at 35, fertility must go to shit because women don't come in to
- 16:17get their kids baptized after that age.
- 16:19Wow.
- 16:19Eighteen hundreds.
- 16:22And, like, eighteen hundreds in France, what was happening?
- 16:25A lot of stuff that was killing women before the age of 35.
- 16:29So that's why or even around that much after 35.
- 16:34So there's a whole, like, issue that I have with where that came from.
- 16:39Science has actually not verified this.
- 16:42Yeah.
- 16:42Yes.
- 16:43IVF outcomes tend to go down.
- 16:45Yes.
- 16:45Our hormones are shifting.
- 16:47There's a yes.
- 16:48Yes.
- 16:48Yes.
- 16:48Yes.
- 16:48Yes.
- 16:49I'm not the person that's gonna be like, oh, you can get pregnant in your fifties.
- 16:53I'm not saying that.
- 16:54I'm saying, like, be realistic, but really have an analysis that is based on your body and your
- 17:01hormones and your aging profile, your ovarian aging profile, which now we have tests for.
- 17:09So do that first instead of, oh, I'm 37, so now it's gonna be really hard for me.
- 17:16Like, who knows what that I I was 30 I I got pregnant at 37 on our first try, and it was a
- 17:24first try, quote, unquote, after a year of prepping my body.
- 17:29Right.
- 17:29A year of him working on his stuff.
- 17:32Like, it wasn't like, oh, we magically got pregnant.
- 17:35It was literally like, let's click all of these things into place before we even start trying.
- 17:42And my expectation wasn't that we got pregnant right away.
- 17:45Like, I was like, oh, this is gonna be so hard.
- 17:49You
- 17:49know?
- 17:49Like,
- 17:50stepping for those twelve months.
- 17:53But I think it really goes to say, like, if we're able to prep our body and we come out of
- 18:00this mindset of the age and I don't have enough time, and I'm running out of time.
- 18:09So every cycle is that much more pressure.
- 18:13Right?
- 18:13That just adds to all of what we're talking about as far as pressure goes, and it it's just
- 18:18not worth it.
- 18:19So I think that's a really that's the second big myth.
- 18:23And the third one that's kinda mixed in with all of this is testing and really knowing
- 18:28what's happening with your fertility.
- 18:31Is your sex drive affect is is it a reflection of stress, or is it a reflection of hormones,
- 18:40or a little bit of both, which happens often?
- 18:43And being able to navigate that with without the shame and guilt and, like, anxiety around
- 18:52all of it, but instead being like, hey.
- 18:54Your testosterone is over converting to estrogen.
- 18:57That's a problem, and let's just do something about it.
- 19:02And it's okay that at at, like, the number of women that are like, you fixed my sex drive.
- 19:07I feel amazing.
- 19:09And it's, like, it's so simple sometimes.
- 19:12And it is it's gonna go a long ways in supporting your fertility because those
- 19:19hormones are interdependent, and they're they're influencing what's happening in your
- 19:27body through every part of the fertility cycle.
- 19:31We don't talk about it often, but testosterone increases two to three days before estrogen
- 19:37spikes before the l eight surge.
- 19:39Right.
- 19:39So the instant like, if your sex drive, your cervical fluid, and your ovulation surge are
- 19:48all synced, that's optimal fertility.
- 19:52Yes.
- 19:52Right?
- 19:53Like, all of it is happening in sync in synchrony with each other.
- 19:59That's telling me you are in an optimal state because all of your hormones have clipped into
- 20:05place.
- 20:06And very infrequently when people have that, do they not get pregnant?
- 20:12But if they don't have that or if they're trying to override it, the number of women that
- 20:16are like, oh, I don't ever have cervical mucus.
- 20:19Like, yeah, that's a problem.
- 20:20Yeah.
- 20:22We're not gonna just shove that under the rug and move on.
- 20:25It's like, that's a major indicator that things are not quite where they should be, and we can
- 20:31do something about it.
- 20:33Well, that's why I'm so excited about your upcoming Beyond Infertility Summit is because I
- 20:38know this is, like, you know, only, like, the tip of the iceberg.
- 20:41Like, what's what we're gonna be talking about.
- 20:43Right?
- 20:43So it's, like, you know, the hormones, the cervical mucus, all these things and and and
- 20:48and and and.
- 20:49And I and I wanna make sure that everybody knows that this this is a online event that
- 20:54doctor Matt must know.
- 20:55It's coming up basically about a week from when you guys are listening to this.
- 21:00So there'll be information in the show notes about how to register.
- 21:04And I I would really encourage people.
- 21:06Remember, it's called Beyond Infertility because we're gonna be talking about I'm gonna
- 21:10be on there talking about libido.
- 21:12We're gonna be talking about all sorts of different things beyond infertility.
- 21:15It's also about your health, your well-being, these sorts of things.
- 21:18So even if you're like, well, it's not really where you're at right now as far as
- 21:23infertility, there's gonna be so many gems that you will pick up like like we did today.
- 21:28Is there anything else you wanna let people know about as far as that event is concerned?
- 21:33I love it.
- 21:34It's gonna be free.
- 21:36It's 49 plus experts just like doctor Diane, and there's, like, master class series going
- 21:45alongside of it.
- 21:46There's just so much that we have spent time building.
- 21:51It's it's gonna be incredible, and it's just a big old party.
- 21:56Yes.
- 21:56Yeah.
- 21:57Come on over.
- 21:58Yes.
- 21:58Come party with us.
- 21:59That's right.
- 22:00We're gonna have so much fun.
- 22:01And I wanna also encourage you guys, please remember that the end of this year, we're

- 22:16to download it, to share it, because that's going to rate doctor Amatma high, and then I
- 22:21get to invite her back for more time.
- 22:23So
- 22:24Oh, that's fun.
- 22:27That's fun.
- 22:28Yeah.
- 22:28Super fun.
- 22:29And thank you so much for being here with me and with us today.
- 22:32It's been always, just like always, a pleasure and a joy chat chatting with you.
