- 0:00Speaker 1: Mending wall. Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
- 0:05Speaker 1: that sends the frozen groundswell under it and spills the
- 0:09Speaker 1: upper boulders in the sun and makes gaps even two
- 0:13Speaker 1: can pass abreast. The work of hunters is another thing.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I have come after them and made repair where they
- 0:19Speaker 1: have left not one stone on a stone, but they
- 0:22Speaker 1: would have the rabbit out of hiding to please the
- 0:25Speaker 1: yelping dogs. No one has seen them made or heard
- 0:30Speaker 1: them made, but at spring mending time, we find them there.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I let my neighbor know beyond the hill, and on
- 0:37Speaker 1: a day we meet to walk the line and set
- 0:39Speaker 1: the wall between us once again. We keep the wall
- 0:42Speaker 1: between us as we go, to each the boulders that
- 0:45Speaker 1: have fallen to each. And some are loaves, and some
- 0:48Speaker 1: so nearly balls, we have to use a spell to
- 0:51Speaker 1: make them balance. Stay where you are until our backs
- 0:54Speaker 1: are turned. We wear our fingers rough with handling them. Oh,
- 0:58Speaker 1: just another kind of outdoor game, one on a side.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It comes to little more. There, where it is, we
- 1:05Speaker 1: do not need the wall. He is all pine, and
- 1:08Speaker 1: I am apple orchard. My apple trees will never get
- 1:11Speaker 1: across and eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
- 1:14Speaker 1: He only says, good fences make good neighbors. Spring is
- 1:19Speaker 1: the mischief in me, and I wonder if I could
- 1:21Speaker 1: put a notion in his head. Why do they make
- 1:24Speaker 1: good neighbors? Isn't it where there are cows? But here
- 1:27Speaker 1: there are no cows. Before I built a wall, I'd
- 1:30Speaker 1: ask to know what I was walling in or walling out,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and to whom I was like to give offense. Something
- 1:37Speaker 1: there is that doesn't love a wall, that wants it down.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I could say elves to him, but it's not elves exactly,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and I'd rather he said it for himself. I see
- 1:48Speaker 1: him there, bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
- 1:52Speaker 1: in each hand, like an old stone savage armed. He
- 1:56Speaker 1: moves in darkness as it seems to me, not of
- 1:58Speaker 1: woods only and the shade of trees. He will not
- 2:02Speaker 1: go behind his father's saying, and he likes having thought
- 2:05Speaker 1: of it so well. He says again, good fences make
- 2:09Speaker 1: good neighbors.
