Mending Wall

"Mending Wall" by Robert Frost opens each spring with two neighbors walking their shared property line, restacking the stones that winter has tumbled down. As the speaker questions why the wall exists at all — there are no cows, no real threat — his neighbor retreats behind his father's old saying: "Good fences make good neighbors." The poem quietly tensions the human instinct to question inherited boundaries against the stubborn comfort of unexamined tradition, all wrapped in the physical labor of a stone wall rebuilt year after year.
