- 0:00Do you like scary movies? Get away from her, you bitch.
- 0:07Classic. He was in the Amazon with my mom
- 0:10when she was researching spiders right before she died.
- 0:14No. I thought you can't prostitute
- 0:20your dog at it? I used to love doggy chow.
- 0:24I used to love doggy chow too. Podcasts don't make psychos.
- 0:29Podcasts make psychos more creative.
- 0:31I'm Crystal. I bet you want to know what my
- 0:34insights look like. I mean you can find it on the
- 0:38Internet, it's not a hard search.
- 0:40I'm baby lame. It's not even behind a paywall.
- 0:43No, in fact I'm the opposite. I put I paid to promote it.
- 0:48And welcome to Camp Classics. I was going.
- 0:52To say a thoughtful podcast about stupid movies, but a weird
- 0:56podcast about my insides, apparently.
- 0:58Oh. Gross.
- 1:01I mean, that does have legs in it I think.
- 1:03A weird podcast about my insides.
- 1:05Yeah, because I just think if you add weird to it, then you've
- 1:08already broken the framework of what people are expecting.
- 1:11So you can kind of go anywhere and then I just think, you know,
- 1:15there's, you know, lots to discover inside of my body, so.
- 1:19She's a disgrace to humanity. Well, we're, we're all meant to
- 1:22be keeping like a stool diary, aren't we?
- 1:24Oh. Are we, Is that, is that a
- 1:25thing? I think, I think that's like,
- 1:27yeah, the new, the new thing should.
- 1:28We introduce that onto the gate shown.
- 1:30Yeah. How was your How was your stool
- 1:32today? Do you really want to know or
- 1:35no? I promise if you answer, I'm
- 1:38cutting it. And she's a disgrace to women.
- 1:42What do we do here? This is a podcast where we
- 1:44explore camp movies. Every two weeks.
- 1:46We're here discussing and rating some of the campus of Camp
- 1:49Classics. Raspberries, some new comments
- 1:54on Spotify, Cara says. When I was outed at 16, my
- 2:00girlfriend just wordlessly put on But I'm a cheerleader and
- 2:03told me, OK, everyone knows now, which means you have to watch
- 2:07this. I love queer education.
- 2:10That's cute. I feel like we must have had
- 2:12this conversation before. Did you have like a gay movie?
- 2:14That someone was like, you're gay now watch this.
- 2:17I don't think I did actually, no.
- 2:19I've said it on the podcast before and me and my other queer
- 2:22friends were all in like, denial and too scared.
- 2:24So like, none of us communicated.
- 2:27So it might be subliminal. Although to be fair, me and one
- 2:30friend were like, Oh my God. Have you seen the new Britney
- 2:33Pepsi Cola advert? Yeah.
- 2:35What do we think of Christina's Coca-Cola?
- 2:37So there was a lot of Britney and Christina chat, which is
- 2:39obviously the F word. What kind of faggot?
- 2:45What about you? Did you What?
- 2:47About what? About me, Yeah, I think so.
- 2:48But they're like from different points in my life.
- 2:50Definitely. Showgirls got showed to me by a
- 2:52boyfriend who was like, I think you might like this kind of
- 2:56thing. I mean, he knows you.
- 3:00You see, darling, you are a whore.
- 3:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. And I remember like my first gay
- 3:08friend being like, you've never watched AB Fab.
- 3:11And like we watched the whole series and that was also very
- 3:13formative, so. I mean, yeah, I was watching
- 3:14Absolutely Fabulous when I was at primary school.
- 3:17Right. And I remember sort of quoting
- 3:20like, oh, third degree Burn sent me to the Betty Ford Clinic and
- 3:25saying stuff like that and not knowing what any of those things
- 3:27meant. Fetch A knitting needle.
- 3:30A knitting needle. A knitting.
- 3:31Needle we also have a Gatreon where you can get a bonus
- 3:35episode every month. I know you people listening or
- 3:38they're dirty little freaks who like to pay for it sometimes.
- 3:42So why don't you go over there and sign up.
- 3:44We've got new member Tilly and also two people who signed up on
- 3:49Apple Podcasts and that means I don't know who you are I.
- 3:53Love the cockers though, I'm into them.
- 3:55I'm like, they're just watching and listening, aren't they?
- 3:57Yeah, we don't know who you are, but we can tell you're sexy.
- 4:00You like that, don't you, that we don't know who you are?
- 4:02Oh my God, are you watching me now?
- 4:04Oh my God, are you at the window?
- 4:05Are you going to kill me? What was I going to say?
- 4:08We had any unsubscriptions? Because I quite liked there was
- 4:12someone that like unsubscribed and then came running back to
- 4:15us. Like do you keep a tally on that
- 4:16as well? I I only if they come back
- 4:19because otherwise I find it very dark.
- 4:21And then I'll start to be like, what did I do?
- 4:23What did I say? Or maybe they died.
- 4:26Well I'm, you know, I'm glad that you realized it would have
- 4:27been something you would have said to have lost the content
- 4:30and not question anyone else. I think I really would like
- 4:33listeners to realize we are such fucking egotistical maniacs.
- 4:37So if you do just give us any praise on any of these comment
- 4:41boxes, it goes a long, long way. More than money, I'd say I could
- 4:45dine out on a good comment for at least two weeks.
- 4:47Validate me, daddy. Show me to me, please.
- 4:52Send it to me, Rachel. I know we're officially in
- 4:55Halloween season now with this. I think we've been in Halloween
- 4:58season for a while now. Yeah, we have.
- 5:00This is like prematurely. Yeah, we've been like in spooky
- 5:03territory for a while. We did vamp, we did weapons, we
- 5:08did Van Helsing. So we've, we've basically we're
- 5:10ticking all the boxes. We're just a horror podcast now,
- 5:13OK? Kooky witches, vampires,
- 5:15werewolves, and today, men with knives.
- 5:19Yes. Is that Is that the alternative
- 5:22title for this movie? But we ran a poll, didn't we, to
- 5:26find out what what we were going to cover.
- 5:28So this is. And they failed us.
- 5:30They failed us. I still haven't watched.
- 5:33I've never seen Paris Hilton in House of Wax.
- 5:36And I was like, this is the perfect opportunity to and I was
- 5:40like, that will that's Bates that will get them in.
- 5:42I don't know. No.
- 5:44Yeah. So I did a poll on Instagram
- 5:46asking what movie we should cover Scream, House of Wax,
- 5:49Freddy versus Jason and Urban Legend.
- 5:52Hundreds of votes. 45% voted for Scream.
- 5:56No one's fun anymore. Wow, so we really can't go
- 6:00against. We can't, we can't, we can't go
- 6:02against it. I have three.
- 6:04I have access to three different Instagram accounts and I voted
- 6:08all of them. That's really funny.
- 6:14I also like tried to massage the numbers because I was like, if I
- 6:18post a photo of Paris Hilton, people will remember that she's
- 6:20in House of Wax. And and that actually worked.
- 6:23It took like the voting from like 20% for House of Wax to
- 6:2736%. I was like, Oh my God, House of
- 6:29Wax is making a late, late poll comeback.
- 6:32But Even so, whatever happened to fun?
- 6:36God, we really should. You know, this is where we need
- 6:38to pay attention to people like Nigel Farage.
- 6:40Or maybe we don't. But like, yeah, how did they
- 6:43swing the votes? They've got lots of awful ways.
- 6:47Not oh, I thought you meant how like he's very popular, but he's
- 6:52the bad choice because like, I think this is the real crux of
- 6:55the problem with our podcast, which is.
- 6:57Oops. A year in.
- 6:59Are we a year in? Yeah.
- 7:00Yeah, nearly, I think. Yeah, the fact that we've got
- 7:05like popular movies which people want to hear us hear people talk
- 7:08about don't tend to be camp movies.
- 7:11Well, as. We did learn something from a
- 7:13previous episode, and that is that Neve Neve Campbell,
- 7:17whatever her name is, inherently is not camp.
- 7:21Which one was that? It was at the craft.
- 7:23The craft. OK, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 7:27So this is kind of the problem. It's like people are most
- 7:30listened to episodes are the episodes about movies that are
- 7:33incredibly popular, but those it's a hard there aren't that
- 7:36many incredibly popular movies that are also incredibly camp
- 7:40because as we know, being an underdog flop is part of the
- 7:44criteria. So.
- 7:46Oh, so this is the floor of the podcast.
- 7:48But that's fine. I think we just, I think we
- 7:50should just keep ricocheting between obscure like Bridget
- 7:54Nielsen, 80s superhero movies and big budget blockbusters.
- 7:59Yeah, there we go. But that's not saying that we
- 8:01have an answer yet for this episode.
- 8:03That would imply that we have already come to an answer and we
- 8:05have an. I'm open.
- 8:07I'm open to, I'm open to actually, and I think that
- 8:10really does take us on baby. Why don't you let people know
- 8:13what makes a camp classic? Well, a camp classic is
- 8:16something that unlocks queer joy.
- 8:18In the words of Megan Fox, you give me such a wedding.
- 8:22We need an ongoing legacy, something that will make you
- 8:25come back for more and also feeds into queer pop culture.
- 8:29It needs to be so stupid. It's genius.
- 8:31If it makes sense, it's probably not camp.
- 8:33And it needs flaccid energy. So a flop.
- 8:37Rejected by the mainstream, Resurrected by the gays.
- 8:41We are today, of course, covering Scream from 1996.
- 8:45It's the audience pick. We'll see whether or not we live
- 8:49to regret asking for your opinion.
- 8:52But yeah, it's, I mean, I'm, I'm really actually quite excited to
- 8:55talk about this movie. What's your history with it?
- 8:58Well, I feel like I'm of a certain age where this was one
- 9:01of the key films of my like, teen hood.
- 9:04This like represents being bang in the middle of secondary
- 9:07school. And it was just like everyone
- 9:09was talking about it. I don't think anyone was quite
- 9:11old enough to watch it, but it was the kind of thing that like
- 9:14is, is it 18 or 15? It was our SO 15 I think.
- 9:18Oh, OK, it's nice. We did all watch it.
- 9:20Maybe we were slightly too young, but we could get in the
- 9:22cinema kind of vibe. So yeah, I just remember it
- 9:25being one of those like, Oh my God, have you watched Scream?
- 9:27It's such a cool film. And then obviously it it was the
- 9:31start of like that new wave of teen slasher movies, wasn't it?
- 9:35It was the one that urban legend.
- 9:37I know what you did last summer. All of the other screen movies.
- 9:40I mean, there was a real difficulty.
- 9:41There was so many films that sort of came off of this.
- 9:44So yeah, I kind of kind of remember being really into it.
- 9:47How about you? I was the opposite because I was
- 9:51way too scared and a pussy for this kind of movie, so I
- 9:56remember people talking about it.
- 9:57I was like, well, I'm never seeing that movie that looks
- 9:59scary. And I guess at some point in my
- 10:0220s, someone made me watch it and it's.
- 10:04In your 20s? Probably.
- 10:06Yeah, probably. Did peer pressure not exist in
- 10:09Canada? I didn't have any friends.
- 10:19If you can't tell by my personality, I didn't have any
- 10:22friends. Both of the both of the way we
- 10:25laughed then was just a little bit too long that there was a
- 10:29hard truth for it for both of us that was like, you know.
- 10:34Oh God, yeah, I hear that. Okay, yeah.
- 10:39Yeah. So basically I missed it even
- 10:41though I knew the idea. I probably had seen Scary Movie
- 10:45multiple times by the time I watched Scream so I knew the
- 10:48plot also because it is the exact same plot.
- 10:52Yeah, and like that so. And I was about to say because
- 10:54Scary Movie obviously was such a big thing as well, because it
- 10:56was so ingrained in pop culture, wasn't it?
- 10:59All of that and I've got that awful.
- 11:01Was it the bud advert? Was that God?
- 11:05Oh yeah. No, that's what they did in
- 11:07Scary Movie, wasn't it? Because they had like the
- 11:08stones. Right.
- 11:09You're right. You're right.
- 11:12Oh, weird, weird time. But yeah, I hadn't seen it.
- 11:15I I mean, I only watched I Know What You Did Last summer like a
- 11:19month ago for the first time. Oh, you're pure, I was about to
- 11:22say. You're so pure, aren't you?
- 11:23Yeah, and but so I watched obviously Scream again this week
- 11:27to prep for this episode. I really, really enjoyed
- 11:29watching it. And then I was like, well, now I
- 11:31want to know what happened. So then I watched Scream two and
- 11:33three this weekend too. Oh, OK.
- 11:35And I'm, I'm like, I'm in. I can't wait to watch 4-5 and
- 11:38six. I mean, it's, it's a real roller
- 11:40coaster ride. Sure, the screams because there
- 11:42are some highs and some deep deep lows.
- 11:45I love scream too. Just because.
- 11:48Jackie from Roseanne, the mom at the end.
- 11:51Laurie. Metcalf Yeah.
- 11:53Yeah, she's Roseanne's sister in Roseanne.
- 11:55I don't know if you remember that sitcom, but yeah.
- 11:57Yeah, yeah, I remember the second.
- 11:58I don't remember her. She's like, she's like, not
- 12:00quite Jamie Lee Curtis, but doing a great.
- 12:03Wanna be a passion? Yeah.
- 12:05Her wide eyed craziness as she's holding that gun is really good.
- 12:10Sorry, spoilers for Scream 2 and then obviously Scream three.
- 12:14Well that was just a camp fest. It was a fucking mess and I
- 12:17loved it. Also, Carrie Fisher was there.
- 12:19I saw the most recent one and the General Ortega one.
- 12:23Yeah, in New York again in the 4D cinema.
- 12:26I recommend it anyway. And it was brilliant because,
- 12:28like, you kept on getting stabbed in the back and it felt
- 12:32like someone was pushing something through your chairs.
- 12:34Every time there was a stab you're like bam bam and the
- 12:37back. Oh, that's quite good.
- 12:38Which? Was really good fun actually.
- 12:40But yeah, but that the franchise has gone to shit, hasn't it?
- 12:43Well, I think it's still making a shit load of money.
- 12:46But they're doing it again now with Neve Campbell.
- 12:49But General Tiger and the other actress that all got ditched,
- 12:54didn't it because of her views on Palestine.
- 12:56Yeah, it's a real, real, real shame.
- 12:58So Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream 6 because she wasn't
- 13:02getting paid enough, which we can, you know, support.
- 13:05Obviously. She's like, I'm the head of this
- 13:07franchise. If I was a man, I'd be getting
- 13:09paid much more than I'm getting offered for this.
- 13:12Pay me more. So she didn't do it.
- 13:14And then Scream 6 came out. I think it was pretty
- 13:16successful. And then, yeah, Melissa Barrera,
- 13:20who was like the new lead alongside Jenna Ortega, she made
- 13:25some pro Palestine statements and she got dropped.
- 13:27Wow. Just so shit.
- 13:29And so then Jenna Ortega kind of quit in solidarity.
- 13:33I know Neff Campbell's back, which I find a little bit
- 13:36troubling. Yeah, but I also don't know
- 13:39enough to really comment. Sure.
- 13:40I think the only thing I have a problem, well outside of this
- 13:43huge thing that we've just been talking about, but it was going
- 13:46in a really interesting direction, the film.
- 13:48And I thought it was really smart because it was kind of
- 13:50like she's the daughter of one of the killers that we'll talk
- 13:55about in a bit, isn't she? But, and you kind of don't know
- 13:57if she is a killer, if she's got that sort of side to her or not.
- 14:01And she's kind of going through some mental health issues that
- 14:03imply that she might also be the killer in the future.
- 14:06And I just, I thought that was a really clever way of taking this
- 14:10franchise because a lot of the time in the screen movies, they
- 14:13do just repeat the same format, digging out another person.
- 14:16Oh, it's you again. And it's it all gets a bit
- 14:18Scooby-doo doesn't. It the third movie is so
- 14:22Scooby-doo, like the way the the way they dial up the slapstick
- 14:28and like, because a lot of it takes place on a mansion with
- 14:31hidden rooms, it's like so scooby-doo, like a spooky
- 14:35mansion. Oops, I've fallen through a
- 14:37bookcase. Oh, there's a killer.
- 14:40Anyway, these movies are a trip, but I've really enjoyed like
- 14:46getting into the the lore of them this weekend.
- 14:48It was so fun. Whatever happened to fun?
- 14:51Let's get into the context. Yeah.
- 14:53So it's 96 and the slasher was just done.
- 14:59There hadn't been like a really successful slasher in a really
- 15:02long time. The writer, Kevin Williamson, he
- 15:06was broke, took a punt on writing this.
- 15:10Wes Craven, who ended up directing, was also kind of
- 15:12washed up. Basically this entire production
- 15:15was in that Christina Aguilera tweet.
- 15:18Christina was at her lowest. Fat, nasty and broke, career in
- 15:21shambles. She came on this bitch mad as
- 15:24hell. I feel like I've been that tweet
- 15:27for like a few years now. I'm waiting for like the
- 15:31Renaissance element. Yeah, what's going to hit?
- 15:33But yeah, this movie went into production with a $15 million
- 15:37budget, and people had pretty low expectations, which probably
- 15:39say here that it was produced by the Weinstein Company.
- 15:42Oh. Jesus Gross.
- 15:45Specifically Bob Weinstein. And yeah, fuck them, yeah.
- 15:50Totally. Fuck those guys.
- 15:56But yeah, when it opened, it opened in fourth place with $6
- 15:59million and was basically written off as a flop.
- 16:03But the audiences coming out of the cinemas who were polled
- 16:07really liked it. And so the studio increased
- 16:10their marketing spend. And instead of dropping in the
- 16:13second weekend, it actually maintained its position.
- 16:15And then on the third weekend, it grew to $10 million.
- 16:18And then it grew again the 4th weekend.
- 16:20So it basically like was a sleeper hit.
- 16:22It went on to gross $173 million worldwide, was one of the
- 16:27highest grossing slashers for like 20 years, and it ended up
- 16:32launching, as we've discussed, a giant franchise which has
- 16:36grossed nearly a billion dollars over 6 films so far.
- 16:40Isn't it really satisfying when anything is a sleeper hit?
- 16:43Yeah. Just the fact that these huge
- 16:45corporations haven't, with all of their data, worked out what
- 16:49the masses are going to spend their money on.
- 16:51And it's just like a bit of a fuck you, isn't it?
- 16:53Like you said, like people that like pretty low parts of their
- 16:56career all taking. Apart, it's really satisfying.
- 16:59It's not landing and then it's like the quality of the work has
- 17:03connected with people. I just like find that so
- 17:05brilliant. Yeah.
- 17:07And it launched, Yeah, it launched the careers of
- 17:09basically everyone in this movie.
- 17:11Like, Neve Campbell was pretty unknown.
- 17:13David Arquette was unknown. Skeet Ulrich had done the craft
- 17:17with Neve. Matthew Lillard.
- 17:20I mean, it didn't. Matthew Lillard's career never
- 17:22really went anywhere, did it? But he had a moment.
- 17:25Who's Skeet Ulrich? I don't know who this man is.
- 17:28He plays Billy. I thought he was called RIP Torn
- 17:31for some reason. Sorry to this man, no RIP Torn.
- 17:37Wow. Why did you think he was called
- 17:40RIP? Torn.
- 17:41I remember him having a stupid name.
- 17:43And then I think it's because, like, everybody fancied him.
- 17:47Yeah. And then I was just like, RIP
- 17:49Torn. Well, why has he been called
- 17:50that? And you know, maybe he's because
- 17:55he's so well endowed as what I'm implying.
- 17:57What, He's given you a fissure? Oh.
- 18:01Jesus. Gross.
- 18:02Or maybe it links to childbirth. I don't know.
- 18:04But his name's not OK Skeet or Rich, which is a horrible name,
- 18:08and in the world of Hollywood, why you wouldn't have changed
- 18:11that name? Skeet.
- 18:13Especially the way he looks. He's, you know, clearly like he.
- 18:16Looks like a skeet. Yeah, but also he's meant to be
- 18:18like the candy, the eye candy of it, even though it's got a bit
- 18:21Weasley for me. But you think they would have
- 18:24just changed his name to something a bit more?
- 18:26Yeah, because he's basically cosplaying as Johnny Depp,
- 18:28right? Yes.
- 18:30It's very bad, but again, you're right, because of the way
- 18:33culture has moved on and because Scary Movie was so ingrained
- 18:36with this movie at the time, you can't quite work out if you're
- 18:39watching the original screen movie or if it's the parody with
- 18:42the actors. But it's so funny.
- 18:44It's so weird. And like, because the tone of
- 18:46this movie is all already like 50% satire, it's like a scary
- 18:52movie didn't need to do that much to make it a parody of
- 18:54itself. It's just, it's confusing when
- 18:57you're watching it, like watching Scary, watching Green 2
- 19:02and that scene with Jada Pinkett Smith, I'm like, I actually
- 19:06don't know if I've seen this before because I've obviously
- 19:08seen it parodied. And it's the.
- 19:09It's basically the same, Yeah. It's yeah.
- 19:13Anyway, Scream 7, as you said, is coming out next year.
- 19:16Speaking of ongoing legacy, and the writer Kevin Williamson went
- 19:20on to Do I Know What You Did last Summer?
- 19:23He got Dawson's Creek as a result, which is why they all
- 19:26sound kind of the same, actually.
- 19:28That's a really good point, Yeah.
- 19:30It's very coded, isn't it? Yeah, there it's like teens
- 19:34talking like therapist adults. Yes, Oh my God, it is so that it
- 19:38is so that because as I was watching it, I watched it last
- 19:42night and I was just like, yeah, there's something about the
- 19:44dialogue here that I'm like not quite connecting with.
- 19:47And that's, and I never connected with Dawson's Creek.
- 19:50Like side note about Neve, respect to her for knowing her
- 19:53worth. And you know, saying I'm coming
- 19:54back now, give me the money, blah blah, blah.
- 19:57Also very ballsy because I couldn't name a Neve Campbell
- 20:00film that's been made other than Scream since about 25 years
- 20:05before. So to be like, hey.
- 20:09I'm the big dog around here. This is my movie and I'm going
- 20:12to be the head of it. It's kind of like what?
- 20:15All right, Floppy over there. Do you know what I mean?
- 20:17To quote Faye Dunaway and Mommy Dearest, I'm the biggest female
- 20:20star he's got. Biggest female star he's got.
- 20:25Yeah, you're kind of right. You're going to write.
- 20:26And yet she is. She really is the franchise in
- 20:31so many ways. I mean, I guess they proved they
- 20:32could do it without her, but it did.
- 20:34It was missing her. I think she never really wanted
- 20:37to do Scream. She doesn't like horror movies
- 20:39so so I guess from her perspective.
- 20:41Is she Canadian? Yeah.
- 20:43It's just a Canada thing then, because it's like you didn't
- 20:46want to watch them. She doesn't want to work.
- 20:47On them, I guess, yeah, if you're like, I'm going to be
- 20:51stuck doing this fucking job I don't want to do for the rest of
- 20:54my life, I'm going to get fucking paid for it so.
- 20:57Do you think she said it was such venom like that?
- 21:01I'm going on her IMD. I'm going to go on her IMDb now
- 21:03to see what she has actually been in since these last films
- 21:06because yeah, how dare she, quite frankly.
- 21:11Oh, she's in ATV series called The Lincoln Lawyer.
- 21:15Another TV series called Twisted Metal.
- 21:18Twisted Metal like the video game?
- 21:20Yeah, I mean, listen, flop, flop, flop.
- 21:25She's not done anything. She was in ATV miniseries called
- 21:30Titanic Blood and Steel. Blood and Steel.
- 21:36Wow. OK, go off bitch.
- 21:40I was going to say maybe these are like real passion projects
- 21:43and she's like, I'm using my screen millions to just do
- 21:45things that I think are good work.
- 21:47But yeah, as I as I suspected, Twisted Metal is post
- 21:51apocalyptic action comedy television series based on the
- 21:54video game series so. But also as well, of course,
- 22:00we've talked about her on in Wild Things as well, another
- 22:04film that isn't camped. You've got a lot of heavy
- 22:07lifting to do, Miss. I'm the head of the franchise.
- 22:11This is our third Neff Campbell movie then.
- 22:13Yeah, and we still have never done Bette Midler.
- 22:19I don't think we've ever actually done a Liza film.
- 22:22But oh, we'll go through the filmography of Neve Campbell.
- 22:28That is camp. Yeah, that is camp.
- 22:32It's very, you know what? It's very meta camp, just like
- 22:35this movie. Only other thing to say about
- 22:38context is that this movie has a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and
- 22:41critics pretty much loved it. They loved the performances, and
- 22:44they loved the fresh take on the slasher genre.
- 22:48We'll get into the plot in a second, but I do have two pieces
- 22:50of trivia I wanted to leave you with.
- 22:53One, obviously, basically everyone from the 90s was like,
- 22:59in some way. Rumored, attached, Auditioned,
- 23:02approached classic. Lion DB, yeah.
- 23:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, name a person from the
- 23:0790s, anyone you can think of. They were probably, like,
- 23:09considered for a role or whatever.
- 23:11But the one thing I saw that I really enjoyed was the person
- 23:14who auditioned for GAIL Weathers, Elizabeth Berkeley.
- 23:19Different places. Now wouldn't that have been
- 23:23something special? That yeah, I can see it now.
- 23:26Yeah. Or fuck it, get Elizabeth
- 23:29Elizabeth Berkeley as Sydney and get Gina Gershon as go as now
- 23:33we're talking. I am in this movie.
- 23:38It's amazing what painting a surgeon can do.
- 23:41If only. OK, so let's get into the plot.
- 23:45If you're interested in revisiting, it has come to my to
- 23:48know that all three of the first screen movies are available on
- 23:51BBC iPlayer right now if you live in the UK, so you can watch
- 23:54them for free. That's my BBC plug considering
- 23:57they've done so much for me. I love the BBC.
- 24:02Thanks Syphilis. So opening scene.
- 24:04I almost feel like it doesn't need to be described.
- 24:07I don't think there's a person in the world who doesn't know
- 24:09what happens in this scene. But we've obviously got Drew
- 24:11Barrymore wig. Wig, Wig.
- 24:15Wig. What is Wig?
- 24:17What is wig? No, it's not your language.
- 24:19It's just for us. Wig.
- 24:21What would we call it? Pageboy.
- 24:26Yes, it is very nice. But it's kind of hot.
- 24:29Have you dressed up as this as Drew Barrymore in Scream?
- 24:32Before so I has Is there a drag queen alive who hasn't done this
- 24:35luck? Well, no, that has to be because
- 24:37I I did. I'd reenacted the full thing.
- 24:40Yeah. That's what I mean.
- 24:41I don't think there's anyone alive, any drag queen alive, who
- 24:44has not parodied this scene. Like, how many times do you
- 24:48think the scene has been parodied?
- 24:49Oh, hundreds of thousands. And it's artistically, it never
- 24:54gets any more interesting or any better.
- 24:56It's still the same phone call, lip sync.
- 25:00Oh and then it goes into a song. I think mine went into sheep
- 25:05shots. Sheep song by Cher and I think I
- 25:08ended up dancing with the killer.
- 25:10Oh, yeah, I think that was quite good.
- 25:13I mean, in terms of like, if we're going to plot that on
- 25:17like, list of references, it's probably like somewhere, you
- 25:20know, solidly in the middle. Yeah, it's been, it's been, it's
- 25:22been done worse. Yeah.
- 25:24But. Also maybe done that better.
- 25:26Probably done better. Now you say it, it's just really
- 25:30funny with your paint and the scale and size of wigs I'm used
- 25:36to seeing you in, to see you in a really small flat wig.
- 25:39It's just always a little. Pageboy wig.
- 25:41Yeah, it's. Always a treat.
- 25:45What happens in this scene? Well, she over acts for her
- 25:48life, doesn't she? Yeah.
- 25:50I mean, is she bad acting or is she meant to be?
- 25:53I wrote down Is Drew Barrymore awful?
- 25:58And then I maybe changed my mind by the end of this quite long
- 26:01scene. It's like 12 minutes long.
- 26:03Yeah, I don't know. Because it's weird, it's weird.
- 26:05What are they trying to achieve with this scene?
- 26:08Because it's like, I mean, I guess what?
- 26:10And we'll get to it. I guess it's to show that Neve
- 26:13Campbell has got the smarts about her a bit more right?
- 26:17Because when she gets the phone call, the killer calling up, she
- 26:21deals with it in a slightly more proactive manner.
- 26:25But the division isn't enough to suggest that it's a spoof.
- 26:28What Drew Drew Barrymore's doing.
- 26:31So for those of you that haven't seen it, Drew Barrymore is doing
- 26:33a lot of well, she's kind of starting a bit of sort of sexy
- 26:39talk with this weird voice, isn't she?
- 26:41It's. Kind of porny, actually.
- 26:44It kind of could turn into a porn parody of itself.
- 26:47And pretty easily because he doesn't have a sexy voice.
- 26:49That weird voice is not sexy. And she's, you know, have you
- 26:52got a boyfriend? And she's like, no, do you want
- 26:55to maybe be my boyfriend or something?
- 26:57I'm like, what the fuck are you doing, girl?
- 26:59And what? None of the doors are locked as
- 27:01well. None of the doors are locked.
- 27:03She locks the doors so far into the scene, it's very annoying.
- 27:06I mean, I know we know we're watching something and she's
- 27:09about to die, but it's it's hard.
- 27:12The reason they did it like this partially is because Drew
- 27:15Barrymore was the biggest name in this movie.
- 27:17And they wanted people to think they were watching a movie with
- 27:21her as the lead and then to shock them by killing her and
- 27:25saying like, you don't know anything about this movie.
- 27:27Anything could happen. Which I think is a fun concept.
- 27:30I think, and we'll get into this maybe more later.
- 27:33One of my problems is like, this movie is quite feminist and does
- 27:39a lot of subversion, but this opening scene doesn't really
- 27:41have any of that. It's actually kind of incredibly
- 27:44trophy. And it's kind of, even though
- 27:46the movie's trying to say like, we're doing something really
- 27:48fresh and different, actually, this opening scene isn't, isn't
- 27:51that. Yeah.
- 27:52And it doesn't really feel like a comment on it either.
- 27:54It's like, I don't know. It's also the I think the
- 27:57hardest scene to watch in some ways because her murder is
- 28:00fucking brutal. Yeah, it gets really nasty and
- 28:03it's interesting, isn't it? Because especially when it's
- 28:06like setting up a new sort of wave of slasher films, it's like
- 28:10we're starting with the scene and we're saying what, what are
- 28:12we trying to say with this movie?
- 28:13And as you've just pointed out, we can't quite tell.
- 28:17I mean, in a very base way, it is always enjoyable to watch
- 28:21these films to be like screaming at them, being like, you stupid
- 28:24idiot, close the door. Don't do that.
- 28:27So you kind of want them to be a bit shit because you're the
- 28:30whole thing is you're like fighting what you would do and
- 28:33you want to like kind of be like, don't do that.
- 28:35Oh my God, why are you doing that?
- 28:37That's a good point, but. There are still ways to do that
- 28:40in a more interesting manner. And it's just, yes, it's just
- 28:43really like a real bimbo. And I mean, it's just funny
- 28:48because like nowadays I'm just like, I would never answer the
- 28:50phone anyway. So just.
- 28:55Kill me. Like I definitely can't do that.
- 28:57Like I'm not capable of being able to talk and talk to someone
- 29:01on the phone. Yes, I like repeatedly.
- 29:02Like she kept to going back to it, didn't she?
- 29:05That's so true. That's so true.
- 29:08That's really funny. I think the other thing to keep
- 29:10in mind with the scene, and it's hard to remember because we live
- 29:13in like such a post Scream world, but the fact that they
- 29:17were discussing scary movies in a scary movie was so original
- 29:22and fresh that hadn't been done before.
- 29:25The idea that these characters were fans of horror and were
- 29:28there for like. Influenced by it, yeah.
- 29:32Like you watch those bits and I don't know, it's hard to feel
- 29:36like that's revolutionary, but I think it was at the time too.
- 29:39So I guess maybe that's the statement this scene is trying
- 29:41to put across is like we're living in a post horror movie
- 29:45world in this movie. Yeah, I mean, it's also got the
- 29:48great chat up line. I'd like to cut you like a fish.
- 29:51Yeah. Don't threaten me with a good
- 29:52time. I want to see what your insides
- 29:57look like. So yeah, it goes.
- 29:59It starts campy. She looks campy.
- 30:02It's cheesy. She's a bit of a bimbo.
- 30:05You know, the jock boyfriend's been caught outside on the
- 30:08patio, he's about to be killed. But then, like you said, there's
- 30:11a real nastiness that happens and it doesn't quite sit in the
- 30:15right place for me. Yeah, tonally, it feels
- 30:19different to the rest of the movie somehow.
- 30:22I think this movie is constantly trying to decide if it's like a
- 30:25campy satire or a brutal slasher.
- 30:28And sometimes it's one and sometimes it's the other.
- 30:31And that's one of the things that kind of takes me out of it.
- 30:34Sometimes I'm like, how much am I supposed to care about the
- 30:38people involved? How much am I supposed to care
- 30:40about the stakes like? Yeah.
- 30:43And it's like, because I think it's just that thing of like
- 30:46she's been stabbed and then her parents come home awful.
- 30:49And then they're on the phone and then they can just hear her
- 30:52like last breath. And I think I just think it's
- 30:56like that violence feels very real.
- 30:58That feels like a very real thing.
- 31:00Not not necessarily the setup of hearing it on the phone, but
- 31:02just it just felt like real. And like you said, like those
- 31:06kind of, I love all horror films.
- 31:07So I'm kind of not against any kind of violence in the genre of
- 31:11horror. I think it can be interesting.
- 31:12But yeah, it's a sit. It just sits.
- 31:14It's just like, oh, look at big titted Blondie now.
- 31:18She's just now we're really enjoying her, just like slowly
- 31:21dying and then that last shot of her where it's like a really
- 31:25nasty shot of her being hung. In the tree, yeah.
- 31:29I mean, the only thing that does make up for it is the like 90s
- 31:32graphics that come in. It's like, wow, we're definitely
- 31:36in the 90s now, guys. It's so funny that you say that
- 31:40because I was really ready for you to tell me I was being a
- 31:43worse, that I was being too sensitive about all of this.
- 31:46But yeah, that was definitely my take away, too.
- 31:49I was like, this is so brutal for the campy tone that we're
- 31:52setting up with the first couple of minutes.
- 31:55Yeah, maybe that's the point. Maybe the shockingness is the
- 31:57point. Maybe.
- 31:58But I also think it's interesting.
- 32:00I just think it's the way you frame these things because like
- 32:03the way the boyfriend, you know, the lights are turned off and
- 32:06they turn the lights back on and then literally his intestines
- 32:09are hanging out of his stomach. There's something about that.
- 32:12Seemed funny, right? Do you know what I mean?
- 32:15Call me crazy, but that that kind of was still like, whoa,
- 32:18we're in a horror movie. Yeah.
- 32:21And then I also think if you are going to go down the route of
- 32:23like adding a bit more realism to it, the film needs to have
- 32:28more weight to it to kind of be able to get away with that.
- 32:31And again, it felt very throw away and it it didn't feel like,
- 32:35as I said before, like we later see other people in those same
- 32:38sort of situations and how they deal with it.
- 32:41It it didn't seem like there's a big enough leap.
- 32:44Like, oh, so that's how like the old school final girls would
- 32:48deal with these things. This is where we are today.
- 32:51It's like, Oh no, they're still the same basically.
- 32:54Yeah. So yeah.
- 32:55I think it's, I think it's hard in 2025.
- 32:59Even if a movie is aware of the trope, I think it's still very
- 33:02hard to watch a woman experience violence, like male violence,
- 33:07and for that to feel anything other than like, a little
- 33:09upsetting. Unless, yeah, unless it is
- 33:12properly subverted. And I think this opening scene
- 33:14doesn't really properly subvert it, because whenever a man dies
- 33:17in this movie, I'm like, I don't care.
- 33:19I don't believe in the glorification of murder.
- 33:22I do believe in the empowerment of women.
- 33:25But it's also funny. And I mean, I know it's just
- 33:271996, they wouldn't have done that.
- 33:28But it's funny when like you get a vibe that Gayle Weathers might
- 33:31be responsible for the killing as well.
- 33:32It's like, why do our killers always have to be gendered?
- 33:35Like like let's get let's get like non binary killer that we
- 33:40don't know. Oh, actually, let's not go down
- 33:45that route. You can imagine trans women.
- 33:48The killer is screened. No right.
- 33:49Let's just keep it a CIS man. Have you have you seen that
- 33:53TikTok of that person? Like parodying the right wing
- 33:57media trying to find a trans person to blame for Charlie
- 34:00Kirk's. Oh no, I haven't, but I can.
- 34:03Oh, yeah, she's like, so the killer was oh, no, the killer
- 34:06wasn't trans. OK.
- 34:08Or the bullets, the bullets with the bullets trans like, oh, no,
- 34:11no, the bullets are says OK, well, what about the house?
- 34:14What about the house? Was the house trans?
- 34:16The house he grew up in the house was trans, right?
- 34:18No, no. What?
- 34:19Oh, did he get transport to the people?
- 34:22Aside, you know, but you're right, that's a digression.
- 34:26But what I will say is true, Barrymore certainly makes an
- 34:30impression. But the other thing is as well
- 34:31as it's like we're still in like my, my idea of what like good
- 34:35Drew Barrymore is even even if she's not acting very well, I'm
- 34:39like, Oh yeah, she's really cool.
- 34:41It's not like chat show host Drew Barrymore.
- 34:44Now imagine her on the phone to a killer.
- 34:47She'd be like, Oh my God, I love, I love scary movies.
- 34:51Oh my God. I just, I really just resonate
- 34:53with all scary. Movies.
- 34:55Yeah. Like, Oh yeah.
- 34:56You literally, that's what this is, what the new scary movie
- 34:59would be. It'd be the killer stabbing
- 35:01themselves dead having to listen to her.
- 35:07You're so right, yeah. I mean, she'd be the killer,
- 35:09wouldn't she? It'd be her on her chat show.
- 35:11She's. I just wanted to be your
- 35:13friends. You will stay with me whenever
- 35:18you. Can go out into the rain.
- 35:21Do not miss the opportunity. Well, she's dead now, isn't she?
- 35:25So bye, bye Drew. Yeah, then we meet Sydney
- 35:29Prescott at home, and that's obviously Neve Campbell.
- 35:32And we also meet her skeezy boyfriend, Billy, who has turned
- 35:36up at her window and is pressuring her for sex.
- 35:38Wow. What a great I mean, talk about
- 35:42red flags, yeah. Honestly.
- 35:45And it's like, hey. Window and tells you you're not
- 35:47giving it up. Yeah, like why aren't you giving
- 35:49it up? And then it's basically like,
- 35:51why don't we do stuff over the underwear?
- 35:54It's like, oh wow. Because that's not problematic
- 35:57at all, is it? Yeah.
- 35:59But again, in Scary Movie, I've. I still love this scene because
- 36:04he ejaculates at one point, doesn't he?
- 36:07And she gets stuck to the ceiling.
- 36:09Yeah, because he's been building it up.
- 36:10Yeah, we should have done a scary movie instead of this.
- 36:16I think that movie is probably really fucking problematic.
- 36:18Really problematic but. Yeah, I think I would.
- 36:21I don't think I would have been able to enjoy it.
- 36:23I don't know, Maybe I would have.
- 36:24But I just think it's mostly gay jokes, isn't it?
- 36:26Yeah, Yeah. Well, actually brings me into
- 36:29Did you ever sneak into anyone's room when you were younger?
- 36:34It's a very American thing to do, isn't it?
- 36:35Yeah. Do you remember how I said I had
- 36:37no friends? OK, because I did, but I was a
- 36:40bit older. I went into someone's living
- 36:42room and gave. Them a blowjob?
- 36:44Oh wow. And then they hurt they because
- 36:46it was like, you know, we don't live, we don't live in America
- 36:49in these like film houses where they're huge.
- 36:51It was like really small semi detached house and like the dad
- 36:55upstairs heard something and came down and I had to hide
- 36:57behind the sofa. And I've never felt so fucking
- 37:00scared in my life. Did you get away with it?
- 37:02Yeah, they didn't. They didn't.
- 37:03They came down and sort of checked the room, but there was
- 37:06no one. They didn't.
- 37:07I didn't think they heard the blowjob going on, but they had.
- 37:14It definitely wouldn't have been very good.
- 37:16It probably me wearing a brace then.
- 37:20Honey, honey, wake up. Do you hear a dry rasping coming
- 37:23from the living room? Think I can hear something
- 37:25really toothy going on? Were you there?
- 37:30You were there, weren't you? You actually right at me though,
- 37:33I I have had that exact same situation.
- 37:35I went like to my friends, my boyfriend's this is probably at
- 37:3919 or something, but I went to my boyfriend's family home and
- 37:42he wasn't out to them or they were like not cool with him
- 37:44being gay and yet he'd brought me.
- 37:46So we were staying in separate rooms and then he snuck into my
- 37:49room in the night, which was like definitely not going to be
- 37:52cool. And then we were having sex and
- 37:54his mom started bounding on pounding on the door and was
- 37:56like Julian get out of there. So and then I had to have
- 37:59breakfast with him the next day. I mean, you look back and you're
- 38:02like, could I have done without that for one night?
- 38:05Yeah, just for that situation too.
- 38:06Turns out I was that desperate. Unless you were into it.
- 38:10Oh, it's very Sharon Stone of you, isn't it?
- 38:12You wanted them to listen to you fucking their son.
- 38:16When you think about me fucking your son.
- 38:21And that's what you said over orange juice and toast in the
- 38:23morning. How do you picture it, Doctor?
- 38:28Oh my God. OK, we're still not.
- 38:29Everyone fancied Billy at school though when I was at school
- 38:32everyone fancied him. He was like, which says a lot
- 38:36about kind of toxic Society of what an attractive man is.
- 38:40He's got the 2 little Johnny Depp strands.
- 38:43And that's how we knew someone was hot in the 90s.
- 38:46Yeah. So the next day, Sydney goes to
- 38:48school and finds out about Casey's murder.
- 38:52That's Drew Barrymore. We meet Tatum, played by our gal
- 38:55Rose McGowan. Great.
- 38:57Amazing. Yeah.
- 38:59If you want to know all of the behind the scenes T that Rose
- 39:03told us, well, you can go back and listen to that episode.
- 39:05But she spills some great things about, like, for example, dyeing
- 39:07her hair blonde so she'd get the part.
- 39:09We also meet GAIL Weathers, played by Courtney Cox, and
- 39:13she's in an iconic look. This is camp.
- 39:16This is camp. And it's like, thank God,
- 39:18because like, she basically Courtney knew that she was going
- 39:21to be in a film with Neve Campbell.
- 39:23And she's like, oh fucking hell. OK, well, she's not going to
- 39:26wear any color or have any kind of color to the scene.
- 39:29So I need to step up and chew the scenery up a bit here.
- 39:32And that's what. She does.
- 39:33How much you hate Neve? Campbell, she just does the same
- 39:35character. It's all like, slightly
- 39:38intellectual, very kind of, yeah, just a bit like, oh God,
- 39:44give her a slap at least. I appreciate with Courtney Cox,
- 39:47though, because, like, she's coming from like, such an
- 39:50annoying sitcom. I hate Friends so much and like
- 39:56Monaco is such an annoying character and I like that she
- 40:00excuse my friend she's playing a complete cunt in this and I'm
- 40:02like yes go for it. And she was excited.
- 40:05She lobbied the studio to get this part because she's like, I
- 40:08need to play something other than Monica.
- 40:12Let me play a bitch. Please, God, let me play a
- 40:15bitch. And I love that for her.
- 40:17And she chews it up. She does such a good job.
- 40:19I think she's fabulous in this movie.
- 40:21Actually, you know what? I think basically everyone is
- 40:24pretty fabulous in this movie. I think everyone is hitting
- 40:26their marks. I know Nevada is giving Drab,
- 40:29but I think she's doing a really good job of being leading lady
- 40:31in this movie. But also it's because, you know,
- 40:34she's had a hard time because her mom's a slut.
- 40:37That's what we learn, isn't it? Wow, they love, they love
- 40:40calling her mum a slut. Don't know.
- 40:42That's, that's, that's the take home I've got from this film is
- 40:45that Sydney's mother was a slut and she deserved to die.
- 40:48That's the message. Yeah, I mean it.
- 40:51And it carries on for two more movies.
- 40:53I'd say that's the overarching message for Screams 1-2 and
- 40:56three. I mean, we love.
- 40:57Slutty, slutty mum. We love all sluts here at Camp
- 41:01Classics, but it does make you wonder like how slutty was she?
- 41:05Because she don't like to be calling her a slut?
- 41:07Did she just sleep with someone's, you know, husband the
- 41:11ones? Or was she really like a proper
- 41:15sort of cock destroying slut that was really just like
- 41:18causing havoc around the town? Because part of me would.
- 41:21I don't think she deserves to be killed for that, but part of me
- 41:24loves the idea that actually wow since his mother was a real
- 41:29slut. I think that's a running joke in
- 41:32the Scary Movie movies too, isn't it?
- 41:34But yeah, you're so right. If it was 2025 she'd just have
- 41:36an Instagram pic called like the Smoking housewife and it would
- 41:39just be videos of herself in latex skirts just smoking and
- 41:43stepping on men. Yeah, where in reality, I think
- 41:46she's just had one affair with someone, hasn't she, by the
- 41:50sounds of it? I think we find out two.
- 41:52Oh, OK. Yeah, 2 because Cotton weary.
- 41:55So at least we know she's had sex with at least three men and
- 41:58I'd say that's. Oh my God, what a slut.
- 42:01That's far too many for a woman to live.
- 42:04Your mother sucks cocks and hell yeah.
- 42:06Satire. Joke, joke, joke.
- 42:08I think that's problematic, by the way.
- 42:12Is that OK here for me to say? I think I fancy David Arquette.
- 42:15Yeah, Yeah. Even here it's something, you
- 42:18know, in the words GAIL Weathers.
- 42:21I mean you look like a 12 year old.
- 42:24He doesn't. He doesn't look like a 12.
- 42:26She's coming on to him and that's part of her chat up line.
- 42:29You look like a 12 year old but you're torso is different.
- 42:32It's like what the fuck are you talking about?
- 42:35Well, this is a Weinstein production.
- 42:37Oh OK, so then we meet the whole friend group.
- 42:41We've got the Fonzie as well that we meet.
- 42:43Oh yeah, we've got The Fonz again.
- 42:45He feels like he's in a different movie to everyone
- 42:47else. I hate these additional friends
- 42:50who like the movie Buff Geeks. I hate them so much, Randy.
- 42:53Yeah, I hate them. Yeah.
- 42:56Randy's annoying. I think Matthew Lillard is doing
- 42:59amazing work in this movie. I know the character is awful
- 43:03and he's like a toxic, disgusting man, but I just think
- 43:05it's cool watching someone perform this hard.
- 43:09And I kind of respect it. Yeah.
- 43:11But we meet the whole friend group, and they're discussing
- 43:13who could have killed Casey. And this is where we learned,
- 43:15yes, that Sydney's mother was killed a year ago.
- 43:17And basically, she should probably get over it by now
- 43:20because it's been a whole year. I want my girlfriend back, yeah,
- 43:24so I can fuck her. Yeah, Come on, Sydney.
- 43:27We're just going to make jokes about a girl who's been
- 43:29disemboweled from our class. Why are you being so sensitive?
- 43:32It's your mom. Died a whole year ago.
- 43:35Very similarly. Like, grow up.
- 43:37Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's really fucking weird.
- 43:40Tonally, it's weird. The people in this movie don't
- 43:41care about death. It's like, it's like we're in a
- 43:44parallel universe where that's just how life is.
- 43:47It will happen to all of us, so maybe you don't want to, I
- 43:49guess. So, well, when you die, I'm
- 43:51going to just tell everyone to get over it.
- 43:56That is such a punchy move just to say get over it.
- 43:59Like I'm here for it. Listen, you've got things to be
- 44:02doing. We can't be like, moping about
- 44:04Boo, you whore. Then Sydney gets a call from the
- 44:07killer while she's at home and she's attacked and we see that,
- 44:11yeah, she's, she's not like Drew so much.
- 44:13Yeah, she's. Got the smarts about her.
- 44:15Hasn't. She and she's a bit more ballsy,
- 44:17isn't she? She calls this bluff, she goes
- 44:18out onto the porch. She like.
- 44:20She thinks so when she gets chased up to her bedroom about
- 44:24going on a live messenger channel with the police.
- 44:28I'm sorry. She knows what she's doing.
- 44:30I have the mind of a mastermind. What's that?
- 44:33I don't know. But this was, yeah, quite a fun.
- 44:37Did you know in 96 you could call the police from a from
- 44:39APCI? Also feel really, I mean, do I
- 44:43feel something for the police? But like because I feel like
- 44:46they wouldn't have the technology to track it like they
- 44:48would do now. So the amount of people that
- 44:50would be like help my assholes on fire or.
- 44:56I love that's where your brain goes because it's just what you
- 44:58wanted, Yeah. Hello, is this the cocksucker
- 45:04residence? But yeah, the killer taxer, she
- 45:09manages to, like, shake him off. And then Billy turns up and so
- 45:14is immediately arrested as a suspect.
- 45:16And yeah, this is where we we've met Dewey, played by David
- 45:19Arquette. He's the bumbling police.
- 45:21They'll say, wouldn't you just be like, I'm not cool with you,
- 45:23Just keep on climbing through my window whenever you want to.
- 45:26Like even if we are seeing each other like there's a killer on
- 45:29the loose. And also it's just, it's scary.
- 45:32Could you just not do that anymore?
- 45:34My mother was murdered, so let's, like, use the door.
- 45:39Yeah, just let's ring the doorbell.
- 45:42Use the door. Maybe give me a call to let me
- 45:44know that you're coming over, like, yeah.
- 45:47I've I've got a small amount of trauma because of the grisly
- 45:49murder of my mother one year ago.
- 45:52Could you, you know, modify your behavior slightly?
- 45:54Also my mother, you know, I've spent, you know, since my
- 45:57mother's death, I've had to kind of listen to like lots of people
- 46:00there are strangers talk to her about how much of A slut she is
- 46:04and therefore associate having sex with like negative comment
- 46:07connotations. So losing my virginity to you
- 46:09doesn't seem to be like on the top of my list right now.
- 46:12It's like, fuck it, girl. It's.
- 46:14So true, so true. OK, so Sydney goes to the
- 46:19police, police headquarters and then she has a run in with GAIL.
- 46:24GAIL is sensationalizing Sydney's mom's murder and also
- 46:29believes that Sydney helped put away the wrong man.
- 46:31Well, that's the thing. Like she's made some coin out of
- 46:33this situation. But she listen, she's giving a
- 46:36bit more insight into the storyline, isn't she, with her
- 46:38research? Yeah.
- 46:40And so Sydney Dex, GAIL, And that's quite fun.
- 46:43And what does what does GAIL say to her cameraman?
- 46:48Move your fat tub of lard ass now.
- 46:51It is the 90s and we will be slut shaming and fat shaming.
- 46:56But yeah, we this is where we hear about Cotton Weary, who is
- 46:59the man who's been put away and is on death row for Sydney's
- 47:03mom's murder. I want to shout out the name
- 47:05Cotton Weary. I think it's great.
- 47:07Shout out the name GAIL Weathers.
- 47:08I think it's great. I love the names in this movie.
- 47:10They're so weird. What?
- 47:11Sydney Prescott, Yeah. Yeah, they're great.
- 47:14They're really memorable. Yeah, they've like managed to
- 47:16create. I can guarantee no one in the
- 47:19world is called Cotton Weary. And it's like Sarah Michelle
- 47:23Gellar and I know who know what you did last summer.
- 47:25Helen Shivers, great name. This guy has a gift for names,
- 47:29basically. So then Sydney stays at Tatum's
- 47:32house and she gets another call from the killer, which means it
- 47:36couldn't have been Billy because he's in jail.
- 47:39So he's released. Some more stuff happens.
- 47:44Sydney's attacked again at school, the principal gets
- 47:47murdered, school gets cancelled. Billy is a douche bag.
- 47:52He has more sex pressure and then everybody has a party at
- 47:57Stu's house. Yes, and then we get a really
- 48:00brilliant deaf scene, don't we? From our mate we.
- 48:04Sure, we sure do. So, yeah, Randy just explains
- 48:10the rules of surviving a horror movie.
- 48:11He says don't have sex, don't do drugs or drink.
- 48:13And don't say I'll be right back.
- 48:15But then our girl, Tatum Rose McGowan, goes to get some beers.
- 48:19This scene is camp. It is really camp, but again,
- 48:22it's kind of like because of the scary movie thing, like they do
- 48:25some of the lines that she's already done, like when he's
- 48:28there, oh, what do you want me to be?
- 48:30You know, the scared, you know, girl, and you're going to kill
- 48:34me. And then that's when he like
- 48:35scares her. So it's like, it's so tongue in
- 48:38cheek, isn't it? It's kind of like.
- 48:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. The lines are already so, so
- 48:43much satire that like, yeah, the Scary Movie just had to turn the
- 48:46dial very slightly in order to, like, make it extreme.
- 48:49Yeah. It's it's it's strange.
- 48:51I feel like I know I'm not just saying it's Brown who knows her
- 48:54because she's been on the podcast.
- 48:55I feel like roses. I feel like she's underused in
- 48:58this movie. I would like to have seen more
- 49:00of her character in general. Yeah, yeah, I know what you
- 49:03mean. But I think she's actually great
- 49:05in it. Like, I think she does a really
- 49:06good job. This is up there with Drew as
- 49:09like one of the most iconic deaths in the series I'd say.
- 49:13But again, it's like it's interesting about where they're
- 49:15placing it, isn't it? Because it's like you're seeing
- 49:18her ass in a short skirt, yes, through a cap blap, and then
- 49:22you're seeing her incredibly hard nipples through her like
- 49:25cardigan. It's like Azealia Banks, Anna
- 49:28Wintour. Yeah.
- 49:28Of nipple edge. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:32And it's like, yeah, she gets killed, but that is kind of
- 49:35like, oh, she's hot and she's been killed and there's not
- 49:38another layer to it or another. I guess the other layer to it is
- 49:42that she is it that she fights back and is kind of doing quite
- 49:46well. Yeah.
- 49:47But it's kind of sort of I think maybe I think again, it's 1996,
- 49:51but I think we're used to seeing more of a fight back now, aren't
- 49:56we? If if that's going to be the
- 49:57case, it's still. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 50:00I'm what I guess I wonder in 96 if it felt really fresh the way.
- 50:05She but The thing is as well, it's like if we're looking at
- 50:08this purely from like an entertaining slasher thick, it's
- 50:10a campy setup. It's a nice creative way to die.
- 50:13I mean, listen, no one wants to be killed.
- 50:17So actually is it just better? At least that's a memorable way
- 50:20to go. Do you know what I mean?
- 50:22Yeah. Oh, you know, I was stabbed with
- 50:24many at the house party. Or well, I got caught in a cat
- 50:27littered a cat flap. Oops.
- 50:29And I was hanging there. It's kind of yeah, I think.
- 50:32And I think because it is like a creative and kind of implausible
- 50:35way to die it, it softens the brutality of it a bit.
- 50:40Unlike Drew, who just gets like gutted and hung.
- 50:43And it's really horrible. Like, yeah, this this death kind
- 50:47of fits in sort of with the rest of the deaths in the movie where
- 50:51I don't feel like the emotional weight of it in the same way.
- 50:54Yeah. But I agree.
- 50:55It's still yeah, like hot girl dies, but I guess that's gonna
- 50:59happen in a slash. Yeah, and listen, I guess hot
- 51:01girls can die as well. Like, I guess everybody, we're
- 51:06all up for grabs. If there's a serial killer, any
- 51:09of us can get it coming to us. Meanwhile bit Billy and Sydney
- 51:14make up from their fight and she initiates sex with him and they
- 51:19have sex and then I don't know, I might just kind of yadda
- 51:22yadda. It gets a bit gets a bit
- 51:24complicated, but lots more fights, chases, murders and then
- 51:28we get the reveal that they're actually 2 killers and they're
- 51:31it's Billy and Stu. Billy confesses that they killed
- 51:36Sydney's mother because of the discovery of her.
- 51:39Her mother's affair with his father led to his mother
- 51:42abandoning them. And can I just say the way he
- 51:45says that as a motive, because they have all of this chat about
- 51:48like motives. Oh, you know, it's like it's the
- 51:5190s. You don't need a motive anymore.
- 51:53That's so like predictable. But then then he's like, but
- 51:55hey, how's this for a motive? And the way he sort of says
- 51:59like, your slut mom slept with my dad, which means that he, you
- 52:04know, left me. I was like, is that all you've
- 52:07got? Yeah.
- 52:08Oh. To be like a child in a broken
- 52:12home, that is literally all you've got.
- 52:14Imagine if being in a broken home was enough to justify being
- 52:18a serial killer. How many serial killers would be
- 52:20rife in the country right now? But I think that's kind of what
- 52:23I like about it because it's this movie does feel like it's
- 52:26really pointing at male fragility.
- 52:28Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a really good point.
- 52:30It's like it's really showing these boys to be just like
- 52:34pathetic boys who don't have a good reason, who are just
- 52:38sadistic, who are blaming other people for their problems and
- 52:42who are using it to like using their rage and enacting it on
- 52:46other people because they have no way of processing it for
- 52:49themselves. It's like they're it's they're
- 52:51very childish once they get revealed.
- 52:53And I kind of like that for them.
- 52:55They're not like these unstoppable horses, these, like
- 52:59beyond the grave killing machines.
- 53:01They're just like douchebags. Yeah.
- 53:03Douchebags, Yeah. And the movie seems to be really
- 53:06clear to, like, point that out. Yeah.
- 53:09Yeah, actually it's yeah, that's a very true description.
- 53:12It's interesting. I wonder if it would have felt
- 53:14like that as much in the 90s though.
- 53:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know.
- 53:19Yeah. Because we weren't really having
- 53:21like big conversations about toxic masculinity in the 90s
- 53:24where we. Yeah.
- 53:25Whereas now it feels even more loaded the way you've just sort
- 53:28of framed it. Yeah, totally.
- 53:30It's also kind of interesting because Stu doesn't seem to
- 53:32really have a motive. So like they've kind of got to,
- 53:35they've got like the peer pressure kid and Billy who's got
- 53:39his like, quote, UN quote motive.
- 53:41But yeah, their plan is to kill everyone and then frame Sydney's
- 53:46father and make it look like they're also victims who
- 53:48survived. But Sydney manages to turn the
- 53:51tables on them. It's very satisfying.
- 53:53She gets away. She uses the voice box and the
- 53:56math and the costume to like, scare them, which is really
- 53:59satisfying. She kills Stu with a TV which is
- 54:03a fun death for a villain and then GAIL appears and shoots
- 54:07Billy and then Billy comes back for one last scare and Sydney
- 54:10shoots him in the head. I don't believe in the
- 54:12glorification of murder. I do believe in the empowerment
- 54:17of women. That's a nice little campy
- 54:19stupid. And again, that's when it kind
- 54:21of you're like, oh, this is all very knowing.
- 54:23It's very tongue in cheek. Because I think a lot of the
- 54:25thing was when it was released was it was, it's taking the piss
- 54:28out of the genre as much of it as it's moving it forward.
- 54:32So it's really nice to have those moments.
- 54:34But yeah, there's just a few tonal bits in it where you're
- 54:37like, oh, that's a bit shit on women, isn't it?
- 54:40But. Yeah, Yeah.
- 54:41Well, should we talk about the the feminism or not of this
- 54:45movie? One thing I liked about it is
- 54:48that it doesn't have a lot of male gaze issues.
- 54:52Like probably Rose Mcgowan's character is the one who's the
- 54:56most sexualized and even her it's it's not like she's ever in
- 55:00the shower naked. Like female nudity is treated
- 55:04pretty respectfully I would say in this movie.
- 55:07It doesn't feel like it's as salacious.
- 55:11And like ultimately at the end you've got 2 strong women out
- 55:16winning out, gunning the killers, showing themselves to
- 55:18be really resourceful. Putting aside their differences,
- 55:22they're both like quite different characters.
- 55:24They've got complexity and layers.
- 55:27I mean, obviously this movie talks a lot about like the
- 55:29legacy of the final girl and how it she needed to be pure and
- 55:33virginal. Virginal.
- 55:37Clearly a word you don't know. Boo, you whore.
- 55:42And it's neat that this movie subverts it.
- 55:44It's kind of really taking place in this like girl power era,
- 55:47isn't it? Where it's like, you can be a
- 55:49girl, you can have sexuality, you can have this, but it
- 55:52doesn't necessarily mean you can't also be a feminist or
- 55:55strong. I mean, totally.
- 55:57And that's represented in us seeing GAIL Weathers running in
- 55:59hills. It's very Jurassic Park, isn't
- 56:03it? Yeah, that's so true.
- 56:05Hey, do you know how much these hills cost me?
- 56:07I'm not taking them off. They match my outfit, goddamnit.
- 56:10I'm going to run in them. But like also, if you think back
- 56:15to like Ripley, Sigourney Weaver and Alien, like that movie
- 56:19really had a good look at her body.
- 56:21Do you know what I mean? Like, yes, she was tough, she
- 56:24was badass. But like the movie definitely is
- 56:26like, and also we're going to look at her Bush and that it's
- 56:31interesting that this movie doesn't really do that.
- 56:34So I'll give it that for its credit.
- 56:36I mean, you know, and what Neve Campbell has has had to go
- 56:40through to kind of avoid being too much of that male gaze, you
- 56:44know, the layered feathered hair that she's got at one point she
- 56:48has it and then up doing it looks like she's going to prom.
- 56:50And it's like, wow, the hairdresser hates you or you
- 56:54hate hair fashion. I can't decide where it is but
- 56:58like. How do you feel about Gail's
- 57:00hair? Because it's like.
- 57:01Oh, she's did you. It was like Sun in a big thing
- 57:03for you in the 90s. It's very Sun in.
- 57:06So for some listeners might not know what Sun in is because I
- 57:08don't know if it's still a used thing because people are adults
- 57:11and get their hair dyed properly now.
- 57:12But Sun In was a product that he's just put sprayed in your
- 57:15hair. And then by being exposed to the
- 57:18sun, the bleach would activate, wouldn't it?
- 57:20So yeah, it was meant to give you like, blonde streaks, but
- 57:23everyone would end up with like a kind of rancid orange because
- 57:26everyone would put in way too much for way too long as well.
- 57:29I never saw it ever, ever hit the way it was meant to.
- 57:33But she's got like these kind of copper streaks.
- 57:35Super chunky, yeah. Copper and blonde.
- 57:38I love it. And her little like wispy
- 57:41fringe. I think it's wonderful.
- 57:44No notes. No notes.
- 57:47Here. God damn here.
- 57:49Well, I also talked about the, like, killers being driven by
- 57:52their misogyny, by their hatred of women, which has kind of led
- 57:56them to become murderers. I think that's an interesting
- 57:58comment. But yeah, as we also said, like
- 58:01I think this movie is saying, oh, we're so aware of, like,
- 58:04misogyny and these problematic tropes.
- 58:05And yet it also kind of does still replicate some of them,
- 58:09especially in that opening scene.
- 58:10So it's kind of like an interesting moment in time, I'd
- 58:13say. Yeah, definitely.
- 58:14It's and that's the thing I think we've seen with like the
- 58:17more recent screen franchises they've, you know, to varying
- 58:21levels of success, they have definitely moved away and
- 58:24progressed with the way the final girls are represented in
- 58:29those films. And like, yeah, I just think,
- 58:33yeah, it's just it's the time capsule of like a lot of things,
- 58:36this movie. Yeah, yeah, it's, it's, it was
- 58:40really fun to revisit and like to try and place it in that, in
- 58:44that 90s context. I think 496, I think it's
- 58:47really, it is genuinely really progressive in lots of ways,
- 58:52yeah. And you're right.
- 58:53And I think it's so obvious. Like the Dawson's Creek person
- 58:56wrote it. Yeah.
- 58:58Because I think that's the thing that jars with me slightly is
- 59:00it's just there's something that is, you know, there's so much
- 59:04going on. The dialogue does sort of slow
- 59:07it down and bog it down a bit. And it does all just feel a bit
- 59:10like serious and a bit like, and actually it should be fucking
- 59:14wild and frantic. And they just don't seem like
- 59:17young people I want to hang out with.
- 59:19Yeah, you're so right. You're so right.
- 59:21A couple things about that. Yeah.
- 59:23So the writer is gay, which I think explains like a lot of the
- 59:27subversion. I think it explains, like, the
- 59:29criticism of men. It feels like he's very
- 59:32pointedly being like, these are the fuckers who, like, bullied
- 59:35me in school. I also love that there's like a
- 59:37bit of gay subtext in in their relationship.
- 59:40Like, it definitely feels like Stu's got a thing for Billy.
- 59:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 59:44I think that's really fab. And I think, I think that gay
- 59:46sensibility is what leads to a lot of the subversion, the,
- 59:50like, feminist sensibility that comes through.
- 59:54But yeah, in terms of his writing, I think it's like you
- 59:56say, there. It does just, like, seesaw
- 59:59between, like, really can't be funny satire and then, like,
- 1:00:03overly wrought dialogue and, like, real emotional beats.
- 1:00:08And so you're left being like, wait, am I supposed to care
- 1:00:11about Sydney's trauma and her mother's murder?
- 1:00:14Or am I supposed to be laughing at Ghostface falling down the
- 1:00:17stairs? Totally.
- 1:00:19Yeah, Yeah. It's like, where do we sit?
- 1:00:21Yeah. Am I supposed to find it
- 1:00:23traumatic watching Drew Braymore get gutted?
- 1:00:25Or am I supposed to be like? Like, yeah, stop at it.
- 1:00:28Like where are we meant to be? Yeah, Yeah, it's hard from that
- 1:00:32perspective. And I think that actually that
- 1:00:34totally stays throughout all of the Scream movies I've watched.
- 1:00:37Like I remember even watching Scream 6 when it came out, yeah,
- 1:00:40a couple years ago. And people get stabbed like 30
- 1:00:43times and survive. And you're like, am I supposed
- 1:00:46to care if someone gets stabbed or not?
- 1:00:49Does it matter or does it not matter?
- 1:00:51Yeah, because this movie cannot decide.
- 1:00:54Yeah, and they will. They will come back anyway,
- 1:00:56don't they? Like, oh, you know, you thought
- 1:00:58I was dead last movie. Oh, no, I'm back again.
- 1:01:00Like, yeah, spoiler alert. But Dewey, the police officer,
- 1:01:05like, gets like his spine ripped out in the last screen movie,
- 1:01:09doesn't he? It's like there's a really.
- 1:01:11I don't think I've seen that one.
- 1:01:12Oh, OK, I'll spoil it with that. But yeah, I think yeah.
- 1:01:15But basically it happens and Gail's like trying to find him
- 1:01:20and it's a really like sort of tense, her trying to save him
- 1:01:24situation and then he like brutally gets killed.
- 1:01:27But like it state it's not like, oh, you see him get stabbed and
- 1:01:30then it goes to something else. It's like repeatedly and
- 1:01:33something like his spine is ripped out, right.
- 1:01:35But I'm sure he'll be back in the next one.
- 1:01:38Hey, guys, it's all right. Don't worry.
- 1:01:41I'm a police officer. It's fine.
- 1:01:44Bit of pressure, but I'm sure it'll be fine.
- 1:01:47I'm going to smash it. One thing I liked is all of the
- 1:01:49Easter eggs. Like it's just it's quite fun.
- 1:01:53I don't know if you caught more than this but just shout out
- 1:01:56some few like Wes Craven cameos as himself playing Freddy
- 1:02:02Krueger. Yeah, I can see that.
- 1:02:04That was really funny. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:02:06What kind of? Faggot runs around in a
- 1:02:08Christmas sweater. Linda Blair has a cameo as one
- 1:02:12of the reporters. All of the references to horror
- 1:02:15movies. I love all of the celebrity
- 1:02:17references. Like, though, Tori Spelling is
- 1:02:20going to play me in this in the movie version, and then Tory's
- 1:02:24billing does play her in the sequel.
- 1:02:26Like, they talk about Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock.
- 1:02:28They talk about Richard Gere and gerbils.
- 1:02:30It's like, I love how pop culture the movie is.
- 1:02:34Yeah, it's deliberately designed for that teen market, isn't it?
- 1:02:37But I found it really effective. I think I think the ultimate
- 1:02:40problem I have with like 90s teenagers AKA this era of film
- 1:02:46is because it was all about the grunge.
- 1:02:48It was like emo vibes. It was the Dawson's Creek.
- 1:02:52Everyone's kind of like psychoanalyzing themselves in a
- 1:02:55very dark way and it's just not a very camp time to be alive as
- 1:03:01in that in that part of the 90s. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:03:03It's like a very serious. Yeah, you're so right.
- 1:03:06And and actually, like, looking back, they had no idea how good
- 1:03:09they had it. The world hadn't really started
- 1:03:13to fall apart yet. There was optimism, I'd say, in
- 1:03:16politics. It felt like, you know, progress
- 1:03:18was coming for everyone and we hadn't started this disgusting
- 1:03:22backwards slide into the collapse of the world.
- 1:03:24And. And yet they're all maudlin.
- 1:03:26Yeah. Now here, I mean, here we are
- 1:03:28making a Camp Classics podcast because we're just desperate for
- 1:03:31a bit of joy. I.
- 1:03:31Know clinging back to it. I mean, all they've got to worry
- 1:03:34about is oh the Y 2 came Millennium bug might get us all
- 1:03:38like that's it. Yeah, yeah, you're so right.
- 1:03:43Well, what about this movie is camp?
- 1:03:46What are the camp moments? I think I've kind of talked
- 1:03:48about them going through it. I'd say like, overall this movie
- 1:03:53doesn't feel camp. I think it's a good movie that
- 1:03:56like isn't particularly campy but there are moments of camp
- 1:04:01queer joy like Gale's suit just galed.
- 1:04:04Yeah, I think it's, I think a lot of it is like singular items
- 1:04:08in this. Yeah.
- 1:04:08Like, yeah, like a Gale suit does a lot of heavy lifting for
- 1:04:11me. Yeah.
- 1:04:12Drew Barrymore's wig Tatum's death scene I think is quite
- 1:04:16camp. I think there's something camp
- 1:04:19about telling someone to get over their mother's murder.
- 1:04:22Boo you. Whore.
- 1:04:23Something about Dewey, the way he eats that ice cream.
- 1:04:26Quite camp. Yeah, I mean.
- 1:04:27Yeah, there is. There was just lots of sprinkles
- 1:04:30of camp, isn't it? But like the foundations of this
- 1:04:32movie, just like I agree with you, I enjoy this movie.
- 1:04:35It's been a huge part of my like teen years into an adult.
- 1:04:39But it's not like the sprinkles, isn't it?
- 1:04:42So it's more like an ice cream topping.
- 1:04:44Yeah, you're so right. I get a lot of queer joy from
- 1:04:48like, the feminism of the movie, like the way the women win at
- 1:04:52the end. Like I get real like, yeah, fuck
- 1:04:56them up. Like it's really satisfying, but
- 1:04:58it's it's kind of not that camp. It feels cathartic and like,
- 1:05:02vengeful and like deserved, but it's like.
- 1:05:05Yeah, you're right. There, I can kill him, yeah.
- 1:05:07Totally. But I think the interesting
- 1:05:09thing is like when this film came out, it was doing lots of
- 1:05:11new things, like you said, like the way it was referencing other
- 1:05:13films. Loads of like new exciting
- 1:05:16things happened with this movie. But I think it's interesting
- 1:05:20when you have a film like that that's that's about sort of
- 1:05:23setting new trends and doing stuff that then influences other
- 1:05:26stuff. It's hard to take it with you
- 1:05:28because there have been so many interesting horror films that
- 1:05:32are like comedic, more feminist in like the last 10 years that,
- 1:05:37you know, have happened because of films like Scream.
- 1:05:39But it's hard then to go back and to get the same excitement
- 1:05:42that it would have caused in the 90s because there's just, you
- 1:05:45know, like you said, like fucking up the killer and really
- 1:05:48fucking them up. But it's just like now they
- 1:05:50would it's like next level. I'm going to really fucking make
- 1:05:53you pay. So it kind of just, yeah, it it,
- 1:05:57it did something that was really important and it's like
- 1:05:59nostalgic and enjoyable, but it's, it's obviously like lost
- 1:06:03its punch because of what it was meant to be doing at the time.
- 1:06:05It just doesn't have it for me in the way lots of newer horror
- 1:06:08films do. Totally, totally.
- 1:06:10And yet like I really enjoyed rewatching it.
- 1:06:12I think it's a really like well made movie.
- 1:06:16It would be so fun to watch this movie again for the first time
- 1:06:19and like not know who the killers were.
- 1:06:20For example. Exactly, yeah.
- 1:06:22And I think and also not know the rules of these kind of
- 1:06:25movies that we're going to play around with who could be the
- 1:06:27killer in so many different ways.
- 1:06:29So I think that was something that was quite clever.
- 1:06:31It really was like a who you'd done it.
- 1:06:33And I don't think I can't think of lots of films like that
- 1:06:36before the, I mean the horror genre like this so.
- 1:06:39Yeah. Like from a plot perspective, it
- 1:06:40kind of it makes things not make a lot of sense sometimes.
- 1:06:44But the way that they make everyone in this movie feel like
- 1:06:47a suspect is really fun because like, there's a moment where
- 1:06:50you're like, oh, it could be Tatum because she was late
- 1:06:52picking Sydney up, or it's, oh, maybe it's the principal.
- 1:06:54It's when they're back at, you know, when she's back at the
- 1:06:56house and they're both come to the door and they're like, he's
- 1:06:58he's the killer. He's the killer.
- 1:07:00And then she's just, oh, for fucks sake.
- 1:07:01And she shuts the door on both of them.
- 1:07:03Like, all of that is so fun. And again, I think it's like
- 1:07:05these films are designed primarily to excite teenagers
- 1:07:09and like, you just want to be shouting at the screen.
- 1:07:11And I think that's what they're made for, aren't they?
- 1:07:13They're just lots of bad decisions, lots of craziness
- 1:07:16that you're like, oh, no, it's not that one.
- 1:07:18Don't go with there. And then, yeah, what was I going
- 1:07:21to say? That it's interesting, though,
- 1:07:22because, yes, there's lots of things it ticks, but it's kind
- 1:07:26of got lost along its way for me because we talked about Carrie.
- 1:07:30And yet when I watched that and I was like, wow, Carrie still
- 1:07:33really hits hard. And it's so watchable.
- 1:07:37And it's so, like, heartbreaking and scary.
- 1:07:40And yeah, you get like a real sense of like, what's the word?
- 1:07:47Catharsis. Yeah, you get a catharsis
- 1:07:49reaction to. So it's just interesting to me
- 1:07:51because I don't think it's necessary when a film was made
- 1:07:53that you can do that. But I think like Carrie is an
- 1:07:56example of a horror film that can still punch is compared to
- 1:08:00this. That's true.
- 1:08:01Do you think that's maybe partly because this movie is a satire?
- 1:08:05Partly. And so, like, satires tend to,
- 1:08:09like, not age as well. Yeah.
- 1:08:11I think. Something serious like.
- 1:08:13But actually Even so, there are moments of Carrie that like feel
- 1:08:17really dated and like you're like, well, this is can't be in
- 1:08:21an unintentional way. Like the amount she gets
- 1:08:23slapped. Yeah.
- 1:08:24For example. You're like, I'm laughing at
- 1:08:27this movie. I am not like experiencing this
- 1:08:29the way it was intended. Yeah.
- 1:08:31But yeah, like this movie, Scream doesn't really have that.
- 1:08:34I wasn't. I was rarely laughing at the
- 1:08:37movie. As you say, it does feel, it
- 1:08:40does feel dated. I think it was really important.
- 1:08:43It really did something special. But like there's there's a piece
- 1:08:48missing now when watching it in 2025 IA. 100% agree with that,
- 1:08:51it is a classic. And it still goes down really
- 1:08:54easy. Well, let me segue a bit there
- 1:08:58because I I thought it was quite good, but it is a classic.
- 1:09:02But is it a camp classic? Well, should we rate this movie?
- 1:09:09Yeah, let's rate it. Cute.
- 1:09:11So we need to give this movie a score on our campo meter.
- 1:09:14One to 10 Merrells for the quality of the movie and one to
- 1:09:1810 Lyses for the camp factor. So I'm going to mark this on
- 1:09:23Merrill's within the horror genre, So not just like, I'm not
- 1:09:27going to say out of all films that have ever been made, if you
- 1:09:30know what I mean. I think it's really important
- 1:09:33within the horror genre and I think it did a lot of really
- 1:09:36exciting things at the time. So I'm going to give it an 8,
- 1:09:39right? But then I don't think if I was
- 1:09:41thinking of every single film in the world, it would be an 8.
- 1:09:43I think it'd be lower down. But I think it's just important
- 1:09:45to see where it sits within the horror genre.
- 1:09:48Yeah, I think that's totally, totally correct.
- 1:09:51And I was going to give it an 8 too, so.
- 1:09:54Groundbreaking. I think it's like a really
- 1:09:56solid, fresh, fresh for the time, exciting landmark movie.
- 1:10:01And as I say, it's still it's still really watchable.
- 1:10:04So that means it was well done too.
- 1:10:05Yeah. OK.
- 1:10:06But Liza's how camp is this movie?
- 1:10:12It's tricky, isn't it? We've been sort of scraping the
- 1:10:14barrel trying to find the camp. There is queer joy to be found
- 1:10:18here. It is really satisfying watching
- 1:10:22a woman kill a fucking douchebag.
- 1:10:26I get queer joy from that. I will enjoy that forever.
- 1:10:30The empowerment of women. I don't know how camp.
- 1:10:32It is, but it's like a legacy of camp because it's like it has
- 1:10:35influenced so much stuff like as we said, you, you know, every
- 1:10:38single drag queen of a certain age has, has done this has, you
- 1:10:42know, people have bought the screen masks, they've done, you
- 1:10:46know, they dressed up as slutty versions of it.
- 1:10:49And it has sort of influenced so many more funny, you know, camp
- 1:10:54films, like whether it's music videos, all sorts of stuff.
- 1:10:57So it is like a legacy of camp to it.
- 1:10:59But when you just watch it, dissecting it, Neve Campbell is
- 1:11:03not camp. She's not camp.
- 1:11:06Yeah, I think she's I'm, I'm going to defend my Canadian
- 1:11:10sister and say I think she's great in this movie.
- 1:11:13I think she does a really good job.
- 1:11:15I care about her characters, like back story.
- 1:11:19I care about her surviving. I'm invested in her.
- 1:11:22But I agree with you, she's not camp.
- 1:11:25See, I don't care about her. I want had to die and I want
- 1:11:28Gayle Gayle to carry on the franchise or I want a prequel
- 1:11:32and I want to get to know her mom.
- 1:11:33That's who I want to get to know.
- 1:11:35You'd think that would happen, yeah.
- 1:11:38The slutty mom. I mean, yeah, so it's really
- 1:11:42hard, but there are camp moments in it.
- 1:11:47But as an entire film, I'm going to sit right down the middle and
- 1:11:50just give it a five, OK? For me personally.
- 1:11:56I think taking into account it's like queer legacy, I think that
- 1:12:00makes sense. I was going to go for like a
- 1:12:05four, but. Oh, were you?
- 1:12:07Yeah, but I feel there's something about that that
- 1:12:11doesn't feel right because it's just such an important piece of
- 1:12:15media. I'll meet you at A5.
- 1:12:20Yeah, OK. Oh, good.
- 1:12:21I think this is like the first time we've agreed on both.
- 1:12:24Basically, I think what we're saying is if you haven't watched
- 1:12:28this movie, like you should absolutely check it out because
- 1:12:31it's like a real timepiece. And it's it's there's a lot of
- 1:12:34good stuff about it. But if you're looking for like
- 1:12:37something to watch with your friends, having a few drinks
- 1:12:40around Halloween and you want to have a laugh?
- 1:12:43Watch Scream Three Yeah. All of the other films on the
- 1:12:47list that we are now not allowed to talk about.
- 1:12:51And if you little shits think that we're going to talk about
- 1:12:54Spice World the movie when you're not voting for the right
- 1:12:56movies, then you've got another thing coming.
- 1:12:59That's all I have to say. House of Wax was there for the
- 1:13:03Take It. I've not even seen it.
- 1:13:04Yeah, I know it's going to be unparalleled levels of camp.
- 1:13:08I know it. I can feel it in my bones.
- 1:13:11I think urban legend has a lot of possibility too, because it's
- 1:13:14basically like a low rent scream with Rebecca Gayhart.
- 1:13:17Like I think it's, I think it's got some real potential, so.
- 1:13:22Nightmare on Elm Street too. I mean, I basically, and I think
- 1:13:24there's millions of films. Yeah, we've, we've gone straight
- 1:13:28to the middle. Can we make a promise here and
- 1:13:30now? I do not want to for the next 6
- 1:13:33months discuss Neve Campbell ever again.
- 1:13:38This is her third movie and we still haven't done Liza
- 1:13:40Minnelli. I hate her.
- 1:13:43That is so fair. That is so fair.
- 1:13:46Never. If you're listening, I'm so
- 1:13:48sorry. I'm not.
