- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land

- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming through.
- 0:23Speaker 1: As this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and
- 0:27Speaker 1: the storytelling of you to make a difference for today
- 0:31Speaker 1: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Mune, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. Welcome back to another
- 1:04Speaker 2: one of my favorite episodes, the Money Diaries, where we
- 1:07Speaker 2: get to talk with one of our incredible Shees on
- 1:10Speaker 2: the Money community members all about their money story and journey.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Let's jump straight into this one because this week I
- 1:16Speaker 2: got a message and it went like this, Hi, Victoria.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Three years ago, I had one bank account and very
- 1:23Speaker 2: poor spending habits, no savings, and I wouldn't talk about money,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and I couldn't bear to look at our joint finances.
- 1:29Speaker 2: My husband had to beg me to make a spreadsheet
- 1:32Speaker 2: and budget as I completely refused. I left studying a
- 1:35Speaker 2: health degree to pursue my dreams of becoming an artist.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Fast forward to now, I have now been a full
- 1:41Speaker 2: time artist with staff for two years. I have no debt,
- 1:45Speaker 2: tax savings, three assigned bank accounts for my business. My
- 1:49Speaker 2: mindset around money has changed hugely. I am across all
- 1:53Speaker 2: our finances now and would love to discuss becoming a
- 1:56Speaker 2: business owner during the pandemic and how talking about money
- 1:59Speaker 2: and getting on with our finances has changed absolutely everything
- 2:04Speaker 2: money diarist, Welcome to the show. Hi, How exciting is that?
- 2:07Speaker 4: Oh, I'm so excited.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Such a flex Thank you.
- 2:10Speaker 4: So I'm so tough to be here.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I am so excited to have you imagine. I don't know.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I just think it's one of those things. To like
- 2:18Speaker 2: take your your passion full time is bloody terrifying, Let's
- 2:22Speaker 2: be honest. But as I'm sure you can attest the
- 2:26Speaker 2: best thing you'll do in your whole entire life, but
- 2:29Speaker 2: to not only have done that, but to also go
- 2:31Speaker 2: I'm not only a full time artist, guys, I'm an
- 2:33Speaker 2: artist with stuff like that's a flex.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Well, to be fair, she's on matt leave, but she
- 2:39Speaker 4: still counts.
- 2:40Speaker 2: No, she still counts, she still counts. She's I mean,
- 2:43Speaker 2: she's on matt leave from some business where she is employed. Yeah,
- 2:47Speaker 2: how good? All right, before we get into the nitty
- 2:49Speaker 2: gritty of all the questions, I want to ask you.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I want to know what grade would you give your
- 2:53Speaker 2: money habits on a scale of A through F.
- 2:57Speaker 4: I have been mulling over this and I'm gonna say
- 2:59Speaker 4: I'm gonna sit in B A B.
- 3:01Speaker 2: All right. Well, we're just going to save that one
- 3:03Speaker 2: for later, and we'll have a chat about that at
- 3:05Speaker 2: the end of the episode. But I'm so excited to
- 3:08Speaker 2: learn more about you. Can you tell me a little
- 3:10Speaker 2: bit more about your money story and journey?
- 3:13Speaker 1: Oh?
- 3:13Speaker 4: Yeah, of course. So I was challenged to my husband
- 3:16Speaker 4: because I wanted to actually pinpoint when we sat down
- 3:19Speaker 4: and we had our big chat. So it was the
- 3:21Speaker 4: Christmas of twenty nineteen, just the start of twenty twenty,
- 3:24Speaker 4: so I would have been twenty five. I was very
- 3:29Speaker 4: head in the sand, very just don't tell me how
- 3:32Speaker 4: to manage my money. I'll figure it out myself.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I don't need nobody.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Yep, pretty much. I was just very weak by week
- 3:39Speaker 4: the money that would come in, I would just address
- 3:41Speaker 4: what was immediately in front of me and I wouldn't
- 3:43Speaker 4: think much past that. So I'd be like, Okay, my
- 3:46Speaker 4: car bills are coming in this week. I'll just deal
- 3:48Speaker 4: with that, and I wouldn't think of anything else. It
- 3:50Speaker 4: was very I had my little binoculars on, but not
- 3:53Speaker 4: in a good way.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like that's really relatable to a lot
- 3:56Speaker 2: of people in our community. Is that how you grew
- 3:59Speaker 2: up around money? What was it like as a child
- 4:01Speaker 2: talking about money?
- 4:02Speaker 4: Again, very head in the sand. So I really didn't
- 4:05Speaker 4: know much about my parents' finances. They owned their own business,
- 4:10Speaker 4: and I was I don't know if it was my
- 4:11Speaker 4: own doing just not wanting to learn about it, or
- 4:14Speaker 4: if they didn't speak about it. But I was really
- 4:17Speaker 4: unaware of what, yeah, of how their finances were.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It's pretty common. And then becoming an adult, I want
- 4:23Speaker 2: to know how old were you when you got married.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Was that something that you talked about then or was
- 4:28Speaker 2: like there a particular moment that you were like, oh, okay,
- 4:31Speaker 2: well now we're going to have to talk about finances,
- 4:34Speaker 2: or was it literally after you were married, and you
- 4:36Speaker 2: were like, all right, being told off by my husband
- 4:38Speaker 2: one too many times, I guess I'll do this budget.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, we had been saying that we were saving
- 4:43Speaker 4: for a house for quite some time, and it just
- 4:45Speaker 4: felt very loose, like, oh, yeah, we're saving for a house,
- 4:49Speaker 4: but we didn't really have much to show for it.
- 4:51Speaker 4: We didn't really have any plans in place, and we
- 4:54Speaker 4: didn't you know, didn't have a savings account for our house.
- 4:57Speaker 4: It was kind of this just this thing that we
- 4:59Speaker 4: said we would do, but we didn't really have anything
- 5:02Speaker 4: to show for it. So I think it kind of
- 5:04Speaker 4: got to the point where my husband was like, no,
- 5:07Speaker 4: like we need to make this happen. How can we
- 5:10Speaker 4: make this happen? And can we please talk about this?
- 5:13Speaker 4: And then yeah, that's when I started listening to Shees
- 5:17Speaker 4: on the Money because I was like, Okay, well, in
- 5:19Speaker 4: my time, I'll come around to it.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I'll do it on my own terms. I'm not going
- 5:24Speaker 2: to listen to my husband, but I will listen to Victoria.
- 5:26Speaker 2: That's good. That's good. I like her. You can keep
- 5:28Speaker 2: that up.
- 5:29Speaker 4: I felt quite equipped when I came to the chat
- 5:31Speaker 4: because I said to him and I remember this so clearly.
- 5:33Speaker 4: It was his Christmas holidays and I was like, I'm
- 5:35Speaker 4: not doing it any sooner. We have this week allotted
- 5:38Speaker 4: and I will come prepared. And then we sat down
- 5:40Speaker 4: and then.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Ah, so sweet. Yeah, yeah, I am obsessed with that.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So obviously you are now a full time artist, which
- 5:48Speaker 2: is so beautiful.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I want to know tell me the pervy stuff though.
- 5:52Speaker 2: What money are you earning from being a full time
- 5:54Speaker 2: artist and can you tell us a little bit more
- 5:56Speaker 2: about what that role entails, because obviously being an artist
- 5:59Speaker 2: is super broad. Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Yeah, So I'm an artist in the way that I'm
- 6:04Speaker 4: a painter. So I create original artworks, I do prints.
- 6:08Speaker 4: I sell the licensing to some of my artworks.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, what you sell licensing? That's big dog energy.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Thank you, thank you. I've mentored artists in the past,
- 6:18Speaker 4: I've run workshops and things like that, so it's super diverse,
- 6:21Speaker 4: which is something that I love. I'm also in the
- 6:24Speaker 4: process of getting an ADHD diagnosis, so I think that
- 6:27Speaker 4: has explains why I have, like, I love wearing so
- 6:30Speaker 4: many hats in my business.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like and it's all really novel and exciting.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But in saying that if you're in the process of
- 6:37Speaker 2: getting an ADHD diagnosis as a business own, you'll also
- 6:41Speaker 2: probably be aware that there are some parts of your
- 6:43Speaker 2: business so you're like, per, I'm not going to work
- 6:45Speaker 2: on that at all. That's not engaging, that's not exciting.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Absolutely not. Is that something that you resonate with.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Oh, it does. But fortunately I love being involved with
- 6:55Speaker 4: my finances and it seems to be a good focus.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Like I love my graphs, I love my spreadsheets, I
- 7:01Speaker 4: love my color coding. So that seems to me a
- 7:03Speaker 4: part that it's benefited.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, how good, because I feel like I've
- 7:08Speaker 2: gotten to the point where I love helping you with
- 7:10Speaker 2: your finances talk about mine. Oh no, thank you, that's okay,
- 7:14Speaker 2: no worries, no worries. My accountant can do that, and
- 7:16Speaker 2: he can just tell me if I need to give
- 7:18Speaker 2: him more money for tax or not. That's just I
- 7:20Speaker 2: need to be better at it, because I'm definitely at
- 7:23Speaker 2: this point in time and do as I say, not
- 7:25Speaker 2: as I do. Kind of money gal, like, I'll give
- 7:27Speaker 2: you all the tips, but I'd prefer to talk about
- 7:29Speaker 2: your business.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Oh yes, I've just circled back. I realized I didn't act
- 7:32Speaker 4: to answer your questions. So the nitty gritty. So this
- 7:34Speaker 4: year I'm looking at a turnover of about one hundred
- 7:37Speaker 4: thousand dollars.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, yes, queen.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Yeah, which is really exciting. But then I've also registered
- 7:43Speaker 4: for GST, which hurts, yes, and then obviously saving for
- 7:48Speaker 4: tax and expenses. I pay myself anywhere, so I draw
- 7:52Speaker 4: a wage, which is really exciting, and I pay SUPER.
- 7:54Speaker 4: So I pay myself anywhere from about eight hundred to
- 7:58Speaker 4: nine hundred dollars a week and about anywhere between, say
- 8:01Speaker 4: fifty to eighty dollars a week in SUPER.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Oh how good. I'm so glad that, as a young
- 8:06Speaker 2: artist you're prioritizing that it is so important.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Yeah, so you can definitely understand the pull as to
- 8:14Speaker 4: why people don't want to pay their SUPER because it's
- 8:17Speaker 4: not that sexy.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Let's be honest, out of sight, out of mind a
- 8:19Speaker 2: lot of the time.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yeah, yep. So every Friday, I have my little SUPER
- 8:23Speaker 4: contribution that comes out of my account, my little salary
- 8:26Speaker 4: that comes out of my account to pay myself. And
- 8:29Speaker 4: then yeah, I spend about two and a half thousand
- 8:31Speaker 4: dollars a month on expenses and materials and subscriptions, you know,
- 8:35Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Hey, that's not too bad. And I think as a
- 8:39Speaker 2: business owner, fellow business owner, I really struggle when I
- 8:43Speaker 2: don't know what my expenses are. Like I could tell
- 8:46Speaker 2: you right now exactly what my payroll costs, what my
- 8:48Speaker 2: super costs, what my tax is looking like in all
- 8:51Speaker 2: of that. And I know that I'm saying that I've
- 8:53Speaker 2: got my head in the sand. I absolutely do. I'm
- 8:54Speaker 2: in the very privileged position where I now can just
- 8:56Speaker 2: pay an accountant to give me a monthly summary of
- 8:59Speaker 2: like where it's at, like feel in control without having
- 9:01Speaker 2: to do all of the time that I used to.
- 9:04Speaker 2: But it's actually not that common for business owners to go, yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 2: it's about two and a half grand of operating expenses
- 9:09Speaker 2: per month. Like I feel like so many of us
- 9:12Speaker 2: just fly by the seat of our pants and have
- 9:14Speaker 2: no idea what that's going to cost, or no idea
- 9:16Speaker 2: what that actually looks like because they haven't spent the
- 9:19Speaker 2: time to sit down and quantify it, which is so important.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Please do it.
- 9:23Speaker 4: I have a bit of a running joke that everything
- 9:25Speaker 4: goes through zero.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I just love zero.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Oh zero is so good. My account is very happy
- 9:30Speaker 4: about that. But I also have Excel as well, where
- 9:33Speaker 4: I like I double check zero, and I also can
- 9:36Speaker 4: have the pretty color coordinated you know, graphs and things
- 9:39Speaker 4: like that I really like. Like to me, it's really
- 9:42Speaker 4: satisfying watching particularly my income. I like tracking, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 4: like what percentage of my income is coming from prince,
- 9:49Speaker 4: what percentage is coming from artworks, And I find it
- 9:52Speaker 4: really helps me guide my business.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:55Speaker 2: No, I love that, and I feel like it's all
- 9:57Speaker 2: about the tools that can help us. For some people,
- 10:00Speaker 2: they'd be like, that's double dipping. I don't like that,
- 10:03Speaker 2: But for you, obviously that's what's going to keep you
- 10:05Speaker 2: engaged and empowered in feeling like you're on top of things.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I'm exactly the same, Like I love a good spreadsheet,
- 10:11Speaker 2: and I don't care how many times my accountants tell
- 10:14Speaker 2: me that you can just generate a similar report on zero.
- 10:17Speaker 4: It's not same.
- 10:18Speaker 2: It's not same, it's not same. I would like to
- 10:20Speaker 2: build it myself, and then I want to cross check
- 10:23Speaker 2: it and feel like I've actually gone through every single
- 10:26Speaker 2: line item, because an output sometimes just for me, isn't enough.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I want to feel like I've built that myself, and
- 10:32Speaker 2: I know that I'm in complete control. But that's the
- 10:35Speaker 2: I guess, the inner treasurer in me.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Yeah, and I can really relate, Like I like analyzing
- 10:41Speaker 4: and seeing where my cash flow is going and how
- 10:43Speaker 4: I'm spending my money, and I do find it really empowering,
- 10:46Speaker 4: which I think is something that's changed and that you know,
- 10:47Speaker 4: looking back, definitely was not on me, Like, was not
- 10:51Speaker 4: what I was doing a few years ago.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 10:54Speaker 1: All right.
- 10:54Speaker 2: You obviously had this chat with your husband because you
- 10:57Speaker 2: wanted to buy your first home. I want to know
- 11:00Speaker 2: right now what your big money goal is, like what
- 11:02Speaker 2: are you working towards in business and in your personal life.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Yeah, so the personal one be to buy a house.
- 11:09Speaker 4: So we'd love to have forty to fifty thousand dollars
- 11:12Speaker 4: towards our first home, and we're sitting in about twenty
- 11:15Speaker 4: three twenty four thousand dollars, which is.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Exciting tracking well, thank you.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And my biggest goal in my business'd be to have
- 11:24Speaker 4: my own gallery slash studio slash shop shopfront, which is
- 11:29Speaker 4: just yeah, we can come all things in my art basically.
- 11:34Speaker 2: How beautiful would that be. I know it's going to happen,
- 11:36Speaker 2: it's just when it's going to happen. What kind of
- 11:39Speaker 2: planning you're doing to get to achieving that goal.
- 11:43Speaker 4: That's a really funny question because I think I'm going
- 11:45Speaker 4: to have to set up maybe another bank account, so
- 11:48Speaker 4: to preface, so personally, we have a bank account for everything.
- 11:52Speaker 4: So we have like a bank account for our dog,
- 11:55Speaker 4: our petrol, our personal medical, our groceries.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Like you're the Jessica RICKI right, I'm on it. She
- 12:01Speaker 2: does the same thing I could never.
- 12:03Speaker 4: So I reckon what I will do. And what I've
- 12:05Speaker 4: actually done is I've set up a high interest savings account,
- 12:08Speaker 4: which next financial year I'm going to start popping some
- 12:11Speaker 4: money into that. I kind of forget that it's there,
- 12:13Speaker 4: but I know that it's growing money towards that big goal.
- 12:17Speaker 2: How good. I love this and I feel like it's
- 12:19Speaker 2: going to happen soon. How much are you contributing on
- 12:22Speaker 2: average to your home savings? And I guess what's the
- 12:25Speaker 2: split between your contributions versus your husband's contributions.
- 12:29Speaker 4: So I guess it's like a little bit of the
- 12:31Speaker 4: bucket analogy that we put it all into one account,
- 12:34Speaker 4: then it splits out. So at the moment he is
- 12:35Speaker 4: putting in eight hundred and fifty a week and I'm
- 12:38Speaker 4: putting in eight hundred and of that, we are putting
- 12:42Speaker 4: three hundred and fifty five dollars towards our savings a week.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Oh how good is that?
- 12:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really satisfying to watch it grow.
- 12:50Speaker 2: How are you managing that? I feel like that's a lot.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Yeah. We are really on top of analyzing our spending.
- 12:58Speaker 4: So like, for example, he just got to pay increase
- 13:01Speaker 4: two weeks ago, so that extra hundred dollars that he
- 13:04Speaker 4: was putting in, we really sat down and we were like, okay,
- 13:06Speaker 4: where can it go? You know, our dog vet bills
- 13:10Speaker 4: like she's getting older, so we put away like seventy
- 13:12Speaker 4: dollars a week for her, which we joke is rent,
- 13:14Speaker 4: like we're paying to rent her. Yeah yeah, fair fair,
- 13:18Speaker 4: And we don't have as much fun money as we
- 13:20Speaker 4: would like.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Everybody would like a little bit more fun money. But
- 13:24Speaker 2: it sounds like you're really knuckling down to get these
- 13:26Speaker 2: goals happening. And that makes me so proud and so excited.
- 13:31Speaker 2: How long do you think it'll be before you're able
- 13:33Speaker 2: to start looking at purchasing your first home next year? Exciting?
- 13:37Speaker 2: And you know what it sounds like I'm just going
- 13:39Speaker 2: to take a stab in the dark. You mentioned zero,
- 13:42Speaker 2: you mentioned how good you are at bookkeeping. I don't
- 13:44Speaker 2: think it's going to be an issue at all as
- 13:45Speaker 2: a business owner to actually get finance for that, because
- 13:48Speaker 2: the biggest sticking point for small business owners who want
- 13:52Speaker 2: to get loans is that they don't have good bookkeeping
- 13:55Speaker 2: and they're not keeping track of their finances and they
- 13:57Speaker 2: can't show, you know, year on year profit. And if
- 14:00Speaker 2: you can't do that, well, the bank's not going to
- 14:02Speaker 2: lend to you. But it sounds like you're not in
- 14:03Speaker 2: that position at all. My friend, Oh, thank you, And
- 14:05Speaker 2: it's really nice.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Like we met with a mortgage broker a couple of
- 14:08Speaker 4: weeks ago just to kind of see where we were at.
- 14:10Speaker 4: And my mom's actually a book keeper, which is the
- 14:13Speaker 4: hilarious part of all this, and she looked at my
- 14:15Speaker 4: books and she's like your mother's daughter.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Ah, You're like, yes, but don't tell mum because I'm
- 14:20Speaker 2: taking the credit. Don't give it to her. Don't give
- 14:22Speaker 2: her the credit. Pretty much, All right, let's go to
- 14:25Speaker 2: a really quick break on the flip side. I want
- 14:27Speaker 2: to talk about debt's investment and what your best and
- 14:29Speaker 2: worst money habits are, guys, don't go anywhere. All right,
- 14:37Speaker 2: money diarist, we are back. I am so excited to
- 14:40Speaker 2: be talking to you. Before we get into the structured questions, though,
- 14:44Speaker 2: I want to know you were an occupational therapist but
- 14:48Speaker 2: didn't enjoy it, and now you are a full time artist.
- 14:52Speaker 2: What was that trigger point to go, you know what,
- 14:55Speaker 2: I'm just going to go all in on this. I'm
- 14:56Speaker 2: going to start doing art as my full time job.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I feel like for so many people that's just a
- 15:01Speaker 2: pipe dream, like they might be working in a different
- 15:04Speaker 2: area and going, Oh, I'm so passionate about this, but
- 15:06Speaker 2: I don't know if doing paintings is gonna you know,
- 15:09Speaker 2: pay the rent. How does that work for you?
- 15:12Speaker 1: Like?
- 15:12Speaker 2: Where was the turning point of you know what, I'm
- 15:14Speaker 2: going boots and all in, I can do this.
- 15:16Speaker 4: So I never actually graduated that degree, So that is
- 15:22Speaker 4: probably one of the biggest points in that I knew
- 15:24Speaker 4: that if I had finished my degree, I would have
- 15:26Speaker 4: followed through with it and I probably would have practiced
- 15:29Speaker 4: in it. And I think it was the decision to
- 15:32Speaker 4: opt out and not finish the degree and kind of
- 15:34Speaker 4: give myself that breathing space to be like, Okay, so
- 15:37Speaker 4: I knew that wasn't for me. Kind of what now
- 15:40Speaker 4: and that's yeah, And that's kind of how I fell
- 15:43Speaker 4: back into it. Like I just started painting. I was
- 15:45Speaker 4: just working in my casual, part time job that I had,
- 15:47Speaker 4: and then I just started painting. And then I was like,
- 15:49Speaker 4: all right, well, it was never the intention to get
- 15:52Speaker 4: back into this, but then it just kind of started happening.
- 15:54Speaker 4: People started buying, and I thought, well, I haven't really
- 15:57Speaker 4: got anything to lose. I'm covering my bill of living.
- 16:01Speaker 4: What if I try and make this work?
- 16:04Speaker 2: How did you start selling your art? I have so
- 16:07Speaker 2: many friends who are beautiful artists, and I feel like
- 16:09Speaker 2: I'm jumping down their throats all the time, being like,
- 16:13Speaker 2: charge more for your art, charge more for your time.
- 16:16Speaker 2: You are worth this, and they just don't seem to
- 16:19Speaker 2: see it. How have you known? How do I guess
- 16:21Speaker 2: charge your worth and know what to do? Because let's
- 16:25Speaker 2: be honest, if you're creative, that doesn't usually lean into
- 16:30Speaker 2: being really good at the business side of things. And
- 16:32Speaker 2: that's not me saying that that's a bad thing. It's
- 16:35Speaker 2: just as a creative human being, like you don't really
- 16:38Speaker 2: lean into that type of role very easily, and it's
- 16:41Speaker 2: not something that you find really sexy. You seem to
- 16:43Speaker 2: be a unicorn though. You're obsessed with zero and with painting,
- 16:46Speaker 2: which I adore, but a lot of us who are
- 16:49Speaker 2: a bit more creative, we're just not that good at it.
- 16:52Speaker 2: How did you structure this so that it could become
- 16:55Speaker 2: a successful business, I think.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Because I enjoy the business side of it as well.
- 17:00Speaker 4: And I think that's something like I put so much
- 17:03Speaker 4: time into my social media and I consider it a
- 17:06Speaker 4: part of the job. It is not an afterthought. It
- 17:09Speaker 4: is how I communicate my art to people. It is
- 17:12Speaker 4: how I connect to my customers, and that's how I
- 17:14Speaker 4: engage with them. And I think that can be the
- 17:16Speaker 4: real downfall that people are just like and you know,
- 17:18Speaker 4: they say to me, oh, I just so got on
- 17:19Speaker 4: social media, and I'm like, yeah, but guys, it's for me.
- 17:22Speaker 4: This is part of my role.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I couldn't agree more. Like that's how you're
- 17:27Speaker 2: going to connect with your community. That's gonna be, I guess,
- 17:30Speaker 2: the ticket to getting into people's homes and into people's hearts.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And I think that we get that a lot too.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Ache's on the money. People will say, oh, you guys
- 17:38Speaker 2: are so good at it. I'm like, yeah, Jess does
- 17:40Speaker 2: that full time as a job. And I did so
- 17:42Speaker 2: many hours of that before Jess started to make sure
- 17:45Speaker 2: that it was building properly. It was never an afterthought.
- 17:48Speaker 2: It was always something where I went, all, right, what's
- 17:49Speaker 2: the strategy, what's going on, how's this going to work?
- 17:52Speaker 2: What types of content are we posting? How often are
- 17:54Speaker 2: we posting that, How present are we going to be
- 17:57Speaker 2: on our stories? What's appropriate to be on our stories
- 18:00Speaker 2: versus what's not. And I think that through trial and error,
- 18:03Speaker 2: you learn what your community likes and then you overlay
- 18:06Speaker 2: that over the top of the strategy. But I think
- 18:08Speaker 2: a lot of people just assume it's about waking up
- 18:10Speaker 2: in the morning every morning, I'm just thinking of something
- 18:13Speaker 2: good to post, and that's not it is it?
- 18:16Speaker 4: It's not? And I think like Instagram is such a
- 18:18Speaker 4: beautiful thing, and I think that has changed recently that
- 18:21Speaker 4: suddenly collectors have an immediate way to connect with the artists.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Where is it used to be going through galleries or
- 18:26Speaker 4: going through stockers, Whereas it's a really beautiful thing now
- 18:29Speaker 4: that people can actually speak with directly with the artist,
- 18:32Speaker 4: which I think is.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Really, really actually one of my favorite things. I follow
- 18:37Speaker 2: a lot of artists online, and there are a few
- 18:39Speaker 2: artists that I follow because I'm obsessed with them, but
- 18:43Speaker 2: I can't afford a piece of their work yet, and
- 18:46Speaker 2: I think that that is, you know, even one of
- 18:49Speaker 2: the best ways to support them, by showing them that
- 18:52Speaker 2: not only Okay, I might not be in a position
- 18:54Speaker 2: to purchase your artist yet, but I'm going to like
- 18:56Speaker 2: your content, follow your content, and give you the engagement
- 18:59Speaker 2: so that hopefully you find more people like me who
- 19:01Speaker 2: might be ready to buy, and at some point they
- 19:04Speaker 2: kind of like goal pieces, Like I feel like art
- 19:07Speaker 2: for me is something that I buy to really recognize
- 19:10Speaker 2: a certain part of my life or an achievement that
- 19:13Speaker 2: I have gone through. It's not really a frivolous purchase,
- 19:16Speaker 2: but that's why interacting with the artist as you go
- 19:21Speaker 2: it makes it even more special. Like it's as though
- 19:23Speaker 2: I get to follow your journey and see where you've
- 19:25Speaker 2: been up to before I make that purchase, and it
- 19:27Speaker 2: can be so special, so I can see exactly why
- 19:31Speaker 2: that would work so well for you. But also, I
- 19:34Speaker 2: guess just change the dynamic because you're right. It used
- 19:36Speaker 2: to just be artists going into galleries, and then it
- 19:39Speaker 2: would only be people who were interested in taking the
- 19:42Speaker 2: time to go to a gallery. Now I'm watching the
- 19:44Speaker 2: batchie and I'm also checking out what my favorite artist
- 19:47Speaker 2: is doing, and I get the best of both worlds,
- 19:49Speaker 2: you know.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know what the artist wins because they're
- 19:52Speaker 4: not losing you know, anywhere between thirty to fifty percent
- 19:55Speaker 4: commission exactly.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It's genius. I love it all right. I want to
- 20:00Speaker 2: talk about money again, which I don't think you're going
- 20:02Speaker 2: to be mad about. I want to know do you
- 20:04Speaker 2: have any investments. If so, what are they.
- 20:06Speaker 4: We have an investment portfolio that's sitting at one thousand dollars.
- 20:10Speaker 2: How cool? How did you decide to start investing on
- 20:13Speaker 2: the platform you chose?
- 20:15Speaker 4: So we're currently investing with Vanguard. So my husband is
- 20:19Speaker 4: more of the cautious type, so he felt very secure
- 20:23Speaker 4: and that was kind of he kind of pictured it as,
- 20:26Speaker 4: you know, like a safe kind of investment. And to
- 20:29Speaker 4: be fair, it's not something that I have looked totally into,
- 20:34Speaker 4: whereas I think for me a little bit, my blinkers
- 20:36Speaker 4: are on investing in my business. But investment portfolios. That's
- 20:39Speaker 4: where we're currently sitting at.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's very cool when it comes to being conservative.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I can see why maybe Vanguard was a choice that
- 20:46Speaker 2: you made. It's one of the biggest investment houses in Australia,
- 20:50Speaker 2: very well known internationally. They do, you know, from my understanding,
- 20:54Speaker 2: very good investment portfolios. But what led you to that decision?
- 20:58Speaker 2: What research did you guys do before or was this
- 21:00Speaker 2: something that your husband just said, all right, well I'm
- 21:02Speaker 2: going to put the money in a Vanguard and you're like, yep, cool,
- 21:04Speaker 2: focused on the business, have fun, honey.
- 21:07Speaker 4: A little bit of Columbine, a little bit of columbe.
- 21:09Speaker 4: I had done, you know, very little research. I had
- 21:14Speaker 4: heard the word Vanguard thrown around and that kind of thing,
- 21:17Speaker 4: and I said, yeah, look that's fine. I said, I
- 21:18Speaker 4: would rather just us start investing in something and then
- 21:21Speaker 4: I will have a look later. Like I've said to him,
- 21:23Speaker 4: you know, I do want to start, you know, maybe
- 21:25Speaker 4: having slightly risk your investments. I said, I would like
- 21:28Speaker 4: something with a higher return. And it's funny, he goes, yeah,
- 21:30Speaker 4: He's like sure, it's like, do your research, pitch it
- 21:32Speaker 4: to me. And then he's like, of course, we can
- 21:34Speaker 4: do it, and I was like, yeah, that's fair.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I love that. I feel like they're the sexiest conversations
- 21:38Speaker 2: between married couples, like what are we going to invest
- 21:40Speaker 2: in next? Yes?
- 21:41Speaker 4: Get it?
- 21:42Speaker 2: Love it? Yeah, I want to know. Now, obviously you're
- 21:45Speaker 2: saving for your first home, but do you have any debts?
- 21:48Speaker 2: If so, what are they?
- 21:49Speaker 4: Yeah? So the only debt that I have at the
- 21:52Speaker 4: moment is my hex stet.
- 21:54Speaker 2: And what is that sitting at And how do you
- 21:56Speaker 2: feel about it? Given that? How do you feel about
- 21:59Speaker 2: the indexation going up in June?
- 22:01Speaker 4: Oh, it's painful. It's it is the one reminder of
- 22:04Speaker 4: the degree that I didn't finish, and it's just growing.
- 22:08Speaker 4: It's yeah, it's frustrating.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I mean, it got you to where you are today
- 22:12Speaker 2: and taught you exactly what you wanted to know. So
- 22:14Speaker 2: it's not the biggest waste of money. So you've just
- 22:17Speaker 2: got hex and that is it.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Yeah, yep. So like we own our cars, I've got
- 22:22Speaker 4: no debt for my business. And that's something that I'm
- 22:24Speaker 4: really conscious of because I know that there are so
- 22:27Speaker 4: many things that I could go out and buy tomorrow
- 22:29Speaker 4: that would be wonderful for my business, that would put
- 22:32Speaker 4: me into debt, and I just at this point in time,
- 22:35Speaker 4: I just can't justify the mental load that would come
- 22:37Speaker 4: with that.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's absolutely fair. I feel like you over the
- 22:43Speaker 2: last few years. I mean we've only spent nearly half
- 22:45Speaker 2: an hour together, but I already know this is going
- 22:47Speaker 2: to be true. You've changed your money mindset and probably
- 22:50Speaker 2: adopted a lot of good money habits. I feel like
- 22:53Speaker 2: everything about your financial journey has changed. But I want
- 22:57Speaker 2: to know, what do you think is your best money habit.
- 23:00Speaker 4: I think my best money habit would be consciously staying
- 23:04Speaker 4: on how our money is being split up, so like
- 23:07Speaker 4: checking if our bills have changed, so like we've just
- 23:10Speaker 4: moved recently and we have solar now, so like our
- 23:13Speaker 4: power bill went down, so we were like, okay, we
- 23:15Speaker 4: don't have to put as much away for bills. How
- 23:17Speaker 4: can we use that? My husband just changed phone company,
- 23:20Speaker 4: so his power, like his phone bill is less. Like,
- 23:23Speaker 4: I think that would be our best money habit. And
- 23:25Speaker 4: staying within our means, so like we have a set
- 23:28Speaker 4: budget per week for our groceries, and we're really conscious
- 23:30Speaker 4: to be like, this is how much money we have
- 23:32Speaker 4: this week. We will work within that.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah, how cool. I don't want to bring the mood down,
- 23:38Speaker 2: but I also want to know your worst money habit,
- 23:40Speaker 2: my friend, what is it?
- 23:42Speaker 4: Coffees, brunch and buying paint that I probably did not need?
- 23:47Speaker 2: The first two completely resonate with We're going to be
- 23:50Speaker 2: best friends. Can't say I've ever bought paint I'm not
- 23:53Speaker 2: going to need, But can say I've invested in a
- 23:55Speaker 2: lot of audio gear that I definitely didn't need. Was
- 23:59Speaker 2: it shiny? Yes? Do I think that I would look
- 24:02Speaker 2: cool with that set of headphones on? Absolutely, We're going
- 24:04Speaker 2: to need them.
- 24:06Speaker 4: It's funny because I will buy the same paint twice
- 24:09Speaker 4: and will have clearly had the same thought process, Like
- 24:11Speaker 4: I'll be at the shops like, oh, French blue, that
- 24:14Speaker 4: sounds great, and then I'll come home and be like,
- 24:15Speaker 4: clearly had that thought last week.
- 24:17Speaker 2: I thought this before. I mean, I'm not a doctor.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I can't diagnose you. But that's very adhd of you,
- 24:23Speaker 2: my friend.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm very like I'm in the process of the
- 24:26Speaker 4: diagnosis of this look, and it's pretty much like I'm
- 24:29Speaker 4: ninety five percent there. I'm waiting for the final tick.
- 24:32Speaker 2: It's actually very funny. On the weekend, I went shopping
- 24:35Speaker 2: with one of my girlfriends and I saw this pair
- 24:38Speaker 2: of pajamas that I was like, Oh, I love these.
- 24:40Speaker 2: They're like a navy pair of long sleeve pajamas. And
- 24:43Speaker 2: I was trying to convince myself. I was like, you
- 24:45Speaker 2: know what, I do need new long sleeve pajamas because
- 24:48Speaker 2: obviously winter's coming. Genius. And then I said to her, no,
- 24:51Speaker 2: I'm going to put twenty four hours between this. I'll
- 24:53Speaker 2: come back and get them if I really want them, Like,
- 24:55Speaker 2: it's not too far. I need to be better at this.
- 24:58Speaker 2: She was staying at my house for the weekend because
- 25:00Speaker 2: it was over the Easter Long weekend, and I came
- 25:03Speaker 2: out that night to grab a glass of wine after
- 25:05Speaker 2: my shower in a pair of long sleeve, maybe blue pajamas,
- 25:08Speaker 2: and she said, Victoria, I thought you didn't buy those,
- 25:11Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, no, these are my old ones
- 25:13Speaker 2: I forgot I had, and she said they're identical to
- 25:15Speaker 2: the ones you were trying to buy today, and I said, yep,
- 25:18Speaker 2: that's exactly why I need to put twenty four hours
- 25:20Speaker 2: between me and my spending, so that I can remind
- 25:22Speaker 2: myself you already have that at home, babe.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Yeap. Oh so so relatable.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Like it's like I'm a goldfish. I'm like, oh, blue pajamas,
- 25:31Speaker 2: that's wild. I would like though, that's new, that's new,
- 25:35Speaker 2: that's shiny.
- 25:37Speaker 4: I've literally done that with like two or three colors
- 25:39Speaker 4: that I looked at last week. I was like, oh,
- 25:40Speaker 4: I'm going to try that. Yeah, had that thought two
- 25:42Speaker 4: weeks ago. But anyway, Glass not just me.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Oh no, you need a better system. You need a
- 25:47Speaker 2: better filing system. I find that taking photos of everything
- 25:52Speaker 2: and keeping it in my album so that I can
- 25:54Speaker 2: look back on it and go into my phone. You
- 25:56Speaker 2: could even have like a little album called paint Colors
- 25:59Speaker 2: and you can flip through check if you've got it,
- 26:01Speaker 2: so that you don't double up and buy again, because
- 26:04Speaker 2: I'm the worst at that as well. The amount of
- 26:06Speaker 2: white dresses I have is obscene.
- 26:09Speaker 4: But I bet they're all stunning.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but they're all the same. They're all the same,
- 26:15Speaker 2: all stunning, but all the same. All Right, Now that
- 26:18Speaker 2: we've had a chat, I feel like you are such
- 26:20Speaker 2: a vibe. I am loving this. I love that you
- 26:23Speaker 2: have your own business. I love that you're so passionate
- 26:25Speaker 2: and vibrant about it. I love that you are saving
- 26:28Speaker 2: up to buy your first home, You're investing, you're saving.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I'm so excited with the fact that
- 26:34Speaker 2: you're a business owner paying yourself super like that's queen behavior.
- 26:37Speaker 2: But you said you're a B. So I want to
- 26:39Speaker 2: know two things. Firstly, do you still think after our
- 26:42Speaker 2: chat that you're just a B? And what would it
- 26:45Speaker 2: take for someone like you to get to an A.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Look, I just think cut back on the unnecessary branches,
- 26:51Speaker 4: and I think your tips are actually just checking what
- 26:53Speaker 4: I need to buy and rolling with that. And I
- 26:55Speaker 4: think it would like upgrade me to an A.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so like a few small steps and actually
- 27:00Speaker 2: make a really big impact. I think that's not bad.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, money Darist. This has been such a
- 27:05Speaker 2: fun episode to record and so fun like I feel
- 27:09Speaker 2: like knowing where you've come from and where you're going
- 27:11Speaker 2: our shared lovers spreadsheets like this is going to be
- 27:14Speaker 2: a fun episode for everyone to listen to. Thank you
- 27:17Speaker 2: so much for spending time with us. I'm so grateful.
- 27:19Speaker 4: Oh no worries. Thank you for having me. And I
- 27:21Speaker 4: really hope that my story resonates with other people and
- 27:24Speaker 4: people that feel overwhelmed by spreadsheets and that can just
- 27:28Speaker 4: listen to this and see that there is light on
- 27:32Speaker 4: the other side.
- 27:33Speaker 2: What would be your number one tip? Obviously you can't
- 27:36Speaker 2: just decide, Okay, I'm going to be good at spreadsheets today.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Where would you recommend people start if they're feeling overwhelmed
- 27:44Speaker 2: and not ready to have budget and cash flow conversations?
- 27:48Speaker 4: Set a date, Set a date, and like have someone
- 27:51Speaker 4: hold you accountable and then kind of do whatever you
- 27:54Speaker 4: need to feel ready to have that chat.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I love that.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Like, whether if it's you know, listen to some Shees
- 27:59Speaker 4: on the Money episode, whether it's buying a book, whether
- 28:01Speaker 4: it's sitting down and having looking through your bank accounts,
- 28:03Speaker 4: like you do what you need to do in that
- 28:05Speaker 4: time to prepare yourself to get really hands on with it.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Oh how good? I love that. That is perfect advice
- 28:13Speaker 2: to end this episode on. Thank you so much for
- 28:15Speaker 2: your time. It has been an absolute pleasure.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Oh no, Wrris, thanks for having me, and yeah, thank you.
