- 0:07Restored feels different. Welcome to another episode of
- 0:14the Modern yen Podcast. I'm your host, Kimberly Roberts
- 0:18of Soulful yen Yoga, and I'm really happy you're here today.
- 0:25So today I want to talk about why restored feels different.
- 0:31Because there's a big difference between coping and being
- 0:35restored, and sometimes we confuse the two.
- 0:44We often think we're restored because, oh, I took a break.
- 0:49I slept in an extra 30 minutes today because I distracted
- 0:56myself really well. But sometimes you're not
- 1:03restored. Sometimes you're just less
- 1:07activated. Sometimes you're just a little
- 1:13less exhausted than you were before.
- 1:16Sometimes you're coping just a little bit better.
- 1:23And coping better is not the same as being regulated,
- 1:28restored. It feels different.
- 1:31So let's talk about that. The illusion of fine.
- 1:38Remember that just fine for so many women over 40, especially
- 1:45high functioning women, Fine or just fine becomes the baseline.
- 1:51It becomes the norm. We're productive, we're showing
- 1:56up, we're meeting deadlines, we're holding space for
- 2:00everybody else. So guess what?
- 2:03We assume I'm OK, I'm fine. But internally, that jaw is
- 2:12tight, that breath is shallow. The thoughts, they're racing to
- 2:19solve imaginary emergencies. You know, that imaginary bear
- 2:24that's always standing in front of you?
- 2:28You're not collapsing here. You're bracing and bracing.
- 2:34It can look very competent from the outside, but that's not
- 2:38restoration. So let's talk about, well, what
- 2:44does restoration actually feel like?
- 2:48Because restored feels different.
- 2:53Your breath, it deepens without you even forcing it.
- 3:00Those shoulders of yours, they drop naturally.
- 3:06Your jaw, It softens without you reminding it to do so.
- 3:13And your mind, it stops scanning for threats, not because your
- 3:20positive thought your way there, you know, toxic positivity, woo
- 3:25Hoo Hoo, but because your Physiology shifted.
- 3:32This drop isn't mindset, it's Physiology.
- 3:39Let that land for a minute here. When your nervous system moves
- 3:47out of chronic engagement, the body reorganizes itself.
- 3:54Clarity returns, energy stabilizes.
- 3:59You stop reacting to everything like it's urgent AF.
- 4:06This is what modern yin is all about.
- 4:12Where stillness does the real work.
- 4:18Not dramatic, not sweaty, not loud, but powerfully bold in a
- 4:26quiet way. Now I want to share a little
- 4:32personal story here, just to give a little bit more context.
- 4:39There was a season where I thought I was doing better.
- 4:44I was functioning, working, showing up, wasn't in crisis.
- 4:51So I told myself I was fine. But my jaw was still a little
- 5:00tight every once in a while, my shoulders sometimes still a
- 5:07little too close to those ears. My thoughts, they were
- 5:15constantly scanning ahead of time, and even in quiet moments,
- 5:23I wasn't resting fully. I was still in preparing mode,
- 5:29preparing for the next task, the next problem that I thought
- 5:33would show up, the next thing that needed my attention.
- 5:40And then there was this moment, and I don't exactly recall.
- 5:48Maybe it was after I had been sick, maybe it was during the
- 5:53pause from recording my podcast, maybe it was even when I was
- 5:58lying on the floor after a yen practice.
- 6:02But I remember noticing my breath drop without me even
- 6:09trying. My body, it felt heavy in such a
- 6:16good way, like not fatigued, settled my thoughts.
- 6:24They weren't solving anything. They weren't rehearsing, they
- 6:29weren't anticipating. There was just this space.
- 6:34And I realized, whoa, this is what restored feels like.
- 6:42I hadn't been restored fully like this before.
- 6:47I had just been coping more efficiently.
- 6:51I had just been optimizing my burnout.
- 6:56Yeah, I nailed the art of optimizing burnout because I was
- 7:03coping more efficiently. But here's the thing that kind
- 7:12of restored that kind of coping more efficiently, actually felt
- 7:18really different. And here's the insight around
- 7:25that. When we've been engaged for too
- 7:29long, we just normalize bracing. That's what becomes our
- 7:35baseline, our norm. And you know what?
- 7:39High functioning women, especially women over 40, are
- 7:47very good at bracing beautifully.
- 7:50They've nailed it. But restoration is not just the
- 7:56absence of crisis. Because here's the thing, life
- 8:01is going to life you. Restoration is the presence of
- 8:06regulation. It's when your system stops
- 8:10scanning, when your breath deepens without command, when
- 8:17your jaw softens without you reminding it to do so.
- 8:24And this drop. It's not mindset, it's
- 8:28Physiology. That's why yin, modern yin
- 8:35especially, matters because it's stillness that's not indulgent,
- 8:43it's corrective. It teaches the body that it's
- 8:47safe to stop bracing. And here's the really super cool
- 8:55part that a lot of women ask well, if I know all this, then
- 9:00why do I avoid being still? And I'll tell you the real
- 9:05reason, the simple reason why women avoid true restoration,
- 9:14It's because when the body finally slows down, what's
- 9:18underneath becomes visible. You know, all the stuff that you
- 9:22sweep under the carpet and you're like, oh, it's not there
- 9:25anymore. But then one day you lift the
- 9:27carpet and then all of a sudden everything is exposed.
- 9:32So when we do the same with our body, the grief shows up that's
- 9:38been stored underneath the carpet.
- 9:40The fatigue, the resentment, the truth.
- 9:46So instead of restoring, we want to distract because we're like,
- 9:51Nah, don't want to deal. So we scroll, we stay busy, we
- 9:59over schedule, we tell ourselves we're just fine.
- 10:05And here's the thing. You can say that all you want,
- 10:09but your nervous system knows better.
- 10:12Your nervous system knows the difference.
- 10:16You can feed your mind whatever you want, but your nervous
- 10:22system doesn't lie. So if your system has been
- 10:29engaged for too long, it doesn't need any more motivation.
- 10:34It already knows how to do that. It needs safety and safety.
- 10:42It's not created through intensity.
- 10:46It's created through consistent, gentle, regulated practice and
- 10:51stillness. This is why the work inside the
- 10:59Soulful Yan Yoga app and even some of my Deeper Mindset
- 11:03programs and seven and 14 Day Yin Yoga series are all about
- 11:13less pushing, more softening, more stillness.
- 11:20It's about recalibrating. It's about doing less, but done
- 11:27well. So if you've been listening and
- 11:33realizing, oh, I actually have been coping, I've been managing,
- 11:40I've been just fine. Notice your breath right now.
- 11:46Is it low or is it high in your chest?
- 11:51Notice your jaw, your shoulders. And again, this isn't an
- 11:58exercise in judging yourself. It's about awareness.
- 12:04And this is one thing that I say all the time.
- 12:07You cannot change what you are not aware of because you cannot
- 12:15restore what you refuse to notice.
- 12:24In the Soulfully in Yoga app, the practices that I have
- 12:28designed and curated are for this exact shift.
- 12:35Nervous system regulation, awareness.
- 12:39Not intensity, not sweat, not performance, not track, not
- 12:46check off a box, but consistent, grounded recalibration.
- 12:54Because restoration is built. It's built quietly and restored.
- 13:03It feels different. It feels steady.
- 13:09It feels spacious. It feels unhurried.
- 13:15It feels like you don't have to hold everything up anymore.
- 13:20You've been there. You've done that.
- 13:22You have the T-shirt to prove it restored.
- 13:29That feels different. This is modern yin, where
- 13:33stillness does the real work. So thank you so much for
- 13:41pressing play on today's episode.
- 13:45I hope this gave you some insight, some clarity, some
- 13:48awareness, and I'd love to see you inside the Soulfully in Yoga
- 13:53app Stay tuned for the next episode.
