- 2:07Hi creepy people. Hi, this is pan W Hants and Homicides.
- 2:13It is Yeah, yeah, confirmed, Yeah, can confirm, can confirm.
- 2:20This case is definitely going to repay you for sapporo. Oh. Thanks,
- 2:28You're so welcome. I've been working on it for a while. Yeah.
- 2:31Yeah, it's almost like I knew that I would need to really bring
- 2:36it. You knew I was gonna pull something scary out of my ass.
- 2:40Uh huh? Okay, I think I pulled something scarier out of my ass.
- 2:49Oh, Unfortunately I pulled this from somewhere other than my ass. And
- 2:58yeah, I think you'll be not super happy with where I pulled it from.
- 3:02Okay, Well, I mean at least it wasn't out of your ass,
- 3:07I guess. Yeah. No, I'm comfortable with this coming from elsewhere.
- 3:14Okay, do you like the Gilmore girls? Yes? Do you even
- 3:20know me? Ken? All right? I just had to ask you before
- 3:25we before you bash them? Is that what you're trying to say? No,
- 3:29you'll see. Are you gonna ruin? Are you gonna ruin? Are
- 3:32you gonna ruin Gilmore Girls for me? I don't know. We'll see,
- 3:38Kiley, I officially found the crime that, according to my notes, could
- 3:46ruin the Gilmore Girls for even the most diehard of fans. I hate you,
- 3:53I know, Please don't unsubscribe. I'm obviously angry too. And trust
- 4:02me when I say the name is just the tip of the iceberg, not
- 4:10in terms of the Gilmore Girls per se, but I mean you'll see.
- 4:15Can we go back to the Titanic references that made me more comfortable? I
- 4:20don't think I have any for this one. Well, you just said the
- 4:23tip of the iceberg? Oh yeah, that's yeah, iceberg right ahead?
- 4:31Oh we are charging forward? Okay, all right, let's go hit me?
- 4:36Fuck up? I mean, okay, if you haven't heard the news
- 4:43yet, I regret to inform you that a dangerous serial rapist is about to
- 4:51be released in Moltnomah County. I don't like it. I didn't think you
- 4:58would. Well't. No, My county is right on the edge of basically
- 5:05the counties where Cassie and I both reside. Yeah, as well as a
- 5:11lot of other people. But you know, selfishly, it's our our own
- 5:15self interest is Portland? Well, no, my county. Yeah, I
- 5:20was just making sure I was. Yeah, you're like, am I?
- 5:24Portland is what I was getting at. Yeah, yeah, the big city.
- 5:29So that kind of informs why you guys, I'm mm hmmm shaking with
- 5:36rage and maybe a little bit of fear, because the truth is, this
- 5:44man is a clear and present danger right in our neck of the woods.
- 5:49And no, I am not kidding.'tis not April. No, No,
- 5:56she don't fuck around the only thing that I can say here to lighten
- 6:00the mood is that, if it makes anyone feel better, this man spells
- 6:05Richard Gilmour differently. Okay, Now, for those of you that aren't fans
- 6:14of the show Gilmour Girls, because I guess there could be some of you,
- 6:19but also that didn't immediately tune out. Richard Gilmore is the beloved grandfatherly
- 6:28figure in the classic mother daughter throwback from this elder millennial's youth rip. Also,
- 6:38how are things under that rock? Is it nice under there? Patrick?
- 6:46That's a SpongeBob reference, I know. Well be warned though. That's
- 6:54almost certainly the last laugh. Okay, certainly the last laugh. If you
- 7:01got a hearty laugh out of that, Okay, you better have Yeah.
- 7:08In all seriousness, we try not to overdo it with you know, trigger
- 7:14warnings, because we think most of you know that true crime can be a
- 7:17rather gnarly genre. However, I also know what absorbing this type of content
- 7:26did to me throughout the course of my research, and I think if you
- 7:30feel safe enough to listen to content about sexual assault right now, it's a
- 7:35very important story. But for those of you that might be getting ready to
- 7:42go back to a spooky episode to pass the time instead, I think it's
- 7:46really important for you to be aware that this does pertain to a dangerous criminal
- 7:53that will be rejoining the public in the Portland metro area before the end of
- 7:59the year. Oh, I just got chills, Like it just got freezing
- 8:03in here. It's really funny because that's I know this, and it's still
- 8:11giving me the chills. And then you said it and I was like,
- 8:13that's real. Apparently it is real. So I'm not happy about it.
- 8:20I think it goes without saying I'm not even sure his mother seems thrilled.
- 8:26In all honesty, I would hope not. I mean, I'm not gonna
- 8:33talk bad about people's mothers. So all right, we're going to get into
- 8:39it now though, because I think we've done our due diligence and all of
- 8:45the PSAs, So tune in, tune out. You know, that's everybody's
- 8:52decision based on what they feel like they can kind of tackle this week.
- 8:58Maybe at least check out the show description so you know who we're talking about.
- 9:03Yeah, I do think, just from the aspect of public safety,
- 9:09if nothing else, people just need to know about this. So and I'll
- 9:13try to include as many of the links that I think will be informative without
- 9:20necessarily being quite as triggering. Okay, and the pace bin will have I
- 9:24think it. I think I'm up to about just shy of maybe fifty different
- 9:31resources. Geez. Yeah, wow, she went all out. Oh,
- 9:39I went real wild on all of the resources. So okay. Richard Gilmour
- 9:46was born November eighth of nineteen fifty nine. We're about a just a little
- 9:52over a week away from his birthday right now. Yeah, sort of seems
- 9:56like his date of birth has been all but redacted from the Internet, and
- 10:01I thought that seemed odd since you could probably look up first and last names,
- 10:07along with tons of personal information about his victims. Hm, but not
- 10:13about him. I had to look through several copies of different official public record
- 10:24documents regarding his parole hearings, his trials before I could find one that didn't
- 10:33redact his birthdate. I wonder, why do they say because they really wanted
- 10:37to anger me, let's piss off Caitlin today redacted. Yeah, there is
- 10:46sort of a brief explanation because, as per usual, when it comes to
- 10:50the kind of some of the reasoning behind some of those things, when it
- 10:56comes to law enforcement, a lot of times Chris is able to give me
- 10:58a little bit of insight there. I still thought it was stupid, so
- 11:03I didn't include it. So it was important to me. I really wanted
- 11:11to share it with you, guys. It's very important to include his date
- 11:16of birth in this story. I'm glad that you found it. Yeah,
- 11:20me too. There will be links to both. I believe I have a
- 11:26copy of a redacted version and an unredacted version of some of the court documents
- 11:31that I found. So, okay, have fun with that, kids,
- 11:35I'm not reading them. You've done the hard part for me. Yeah,
- 11:39I wow. Yeah. Richard Troy Gilmore's Clever Criminal alias coined by the media
- 11:48coverage was the jogger rapist. That's unpleasant, deeply. Okay. Was he
- 11:56the jogger or he was the jog and actually this is a very important aspect
- 12:03of his m O. Okay, so he wasn't attacking joggers, which is
- 12:11kind of common, right, exactly, that's exactly what you would think of,
- 12:15right, Yes, I'm so glad that you said that. Yeah,
- 12:18I passed the literal next sentence, and I took a huge sigh of relief
- 12:26because all I have to do is not take up jogging. Right. Wrong,
- 12:31my next sentence. Wrong, You cannot make this. I can read
- 12:37her mind to everybody. It's so much more insidious than that. Unfortunately.
- 12:45Oh okay, I mean you did kind of warn everybody. Yeah, you
- 12:50see, Richard, I'm guessing was something of an avid jogger, at least
- 12:56based on our victim count. Okay, he didn't attack women that were out
- 13:05on their regular jogging route. He found victims while he was jogging, and
- 13:11they were doing any number of things that don't necessarily lead to a heightened state
- 13:16of awareness or alertness. Just being a person out in the world, just
- 13:24people and around m Richard or Dick as I more often refer to him is
- 13:33a tough not to crack. It's a bit more difficult to find information outside
- 13:41of the latest news related to his parole hearings and his upcoming release. But
- 13:48don't worry, we'll get there. But as is true in most of these
- 13:52cases, he stated that he was abused by his father as a child,
- 13:56which, if true, it sounds like it was pretty horrific. He has
- 14:03reportedly described being beaten with an electrical chord. Oh ouch, yeah, and
- 14:09that's prior to his father eventually abandoning the family. Okay, so if it's
- 14:16true, not a great start in life. No, I didn't come across
- 14:22much that would help me to substantiate those details of his earlier life. Got
- 14:28a few things out there floating in the world, So I may come back
- 14:33with an update. We'll see, yay, Come on, foy. There's
- 14:41another detail about Richard Gilmore I couldn't initially substantiate as well. Apparently he wanted
- 14:50to become a cop weird and as you might have guessed, it was far
- 14:58to select facious a thread to just drop it. So I dug in deep
- 15:03and we're going to come back to that. Okay. The first victim that
- 15:09we'll talk about is referred to as Mallory in the limited source material regarding her
- 15:16assault because she never shared her real name and story publicly. Okay, On
- 15:24January eighth of nineteen seventy nine, she was a twenty two year old woman
- 15:31simply going about her evening cooking dinner in her Moltnoma County home when she saw
- 15:37someone in the apartment hallway. At first glance, she thought it must have
- 15:43been her roommate, but unfortunately, her evening was about to take a dark
- 15:48turn as the realization that this was not her roommate settled in. The intruder
- 15:56beat her pretty badly before being her, leaving her with two black eyes and
- 16:03a broken nose from the attack. Jesus, it's funny that choice of words,
- 16:11she recalled. The fact that she recited the Lord's prayer angered her assailant.
- 16:18Oh my god, No, I know. I just was like,
- 16:22not that we don't ever say it, but the fact that Jesus was your
- 16:26yeah, oh my gosh. Still, she was determined to survive because her
- 16:33brother had passed away the previous year from drowning. This was also why she
- 16:40said she kept the information regarding the assault, even from her mother who was
- 16:45really struggling emotionally still from his passing. Oh my god, I can't even
- 16:51imagine, because of course this had to be a multi layered tragedy. And
- 16:57you, guys, I'm so sorry, because I needed to talk about this
- 17:03case and make sure that literally everyone everywhere in the world that listens to us
- 17:08would know that this is happening. But obviously there's more. I spoke to
- 17:17a woman named Danielle Tudor. During the time that I spent chatting with her,
- 17:22I came to know her as an incredibly kind, intelligent, motivated and
- 17:27compassionate woman. She was attacked on November eleventh of nineteen seventy nine. She
- 17:37is believed to be the third victim in a series of rapes, many of
- 17:41which happened in the neighborhood area around her home. At the time when she
- 17:47spoke to the police following her assault, another nearby woman had been attacked already
- 17:52just over a month later, on the day after Christmas in nineteen seventy nine.
- 18:03There was no way that anyone could have known that Gilmore had already made
- 18:07a mistake roughly a year prior that would play a significant role in him eventually
- 18:12losing his freedom. Oh nah, We don't have a lot of information about
- 18:18a number of details in that specific case, but what we do have is
- 18:22one very important piece of the puzzle, no doubt. In nineteen seventy eight,
- 18:29an unnamed woman was assaulted in the neighborhood where both Danielle and the woman
- 18:34who were referring to as Mallory lived. It wouldn't be long before it would
- 18:40become apparent that it was likely the start of a series of brutal crimes against
- 18:45the young women in and around the Portland metro area. Okay, it's just
- 18:53so close to home. Yeah. Danielle Tutor, who is now an advocate
- 19:00for victims of sexual assault as well as for better legislation around those crimes,
- 19:07was just seventeen years old when Gilmore attacked her in her Southeast Portland home seventeen.
- 19:17She was also the only victim to see Gilmore's face well enough to describe
- 19:22it in any detail. Wow. With her recollections of his appearance, law
- 19:29enforcement was able to have an artist produce a composite sketch that helped lead to
- 19:33his arrest in nineteen eighty six. That's awesome. That's a lot of responsibility
- 19:38for a seventeen year old though, My god, Yeah, by that time,
- 19:45Gilmore had sexually assaulted eight other women in the late nineteen seventies and early
- 19:52nineteen eighties. That's what police would later learn. When we spoke back in
- 19:56October, she shared a terrifying memory from the days following her attack. Oh.
- 20:07She worked at fred Meyer through the holidays. Her father worked at fred
- 20:11Meyer at the time, a fact that likely helped to put both of their
- 20:15minds at ease to some degree in the difficult days immediately after her sexual assault.
- 20:22But the relief quickly faded when none other than Richard Gilmour himself came through
- 20:29her checkout line. No, she described knowing immediately at the sight and the
- 20:38smell of him, Oh, that he was the man that had attacked her.
- 20:45She felt completely frozen. She knew it was him, she said.
- 20:51At the time, she tried to act as if she had no idea who
- 20:55he was, just to get him out of the store. And I'll reveal
- 20:59some insight that Danielle shared about Richard Gilmour that might paint this encounter with a
- 21:06very dark brush. After we go through some additional facts of the case.
- 21:11Okay, that sounds so fucking scary. Yeah, and the smell you don't
- 21:18forget, you know, yeah. Never. This next section focuses on Alisa
- 21:27Warner, who had since moved to Anchorage at the time that her story was
- 21:33told by The Oregonian. She was raped on March second of nineteen eighty in
- 21:40the backyard of her boyfriend's Southeast Portland home. Oh my god. On that
- 21:45night back in nineteen eighty, she was a sixteen year old Gresham Union High
- 21:51School student. Wow. While at a female friend's house, the two had
- 21:57been listening to music and drinking beer. Pretty typical night for a lot of
- 22:02teenagers. Yeah. That night, she argued with her boyfriend before he stormed
- 22:07off. Around three am, she walked to his house, hoping to wake
- 22:14him by banging on the bedroom window. Nothing good happens after midnight kids.
- 22:23When she didn't have any luck waking him, she sat in the front yard
- 22:27because, as she put it, I thought I'd better not walk home because
- 22:33I could get raped. Oh my god, that thought was literally in her
- 22:37head. I just luck, fate or just unfortunate circumstances, whatever it was,
- 22:49was about to fail her a second time. That night. As a
- 22:55hand clamped over her mouth, she started to turn and was immediately met with
- 23:00a punch. The man said, scream, and I'll kill you. When
- 23:07she tried to stand, he pushed her down, holding her hands behind her
- 23:11back. And this is wearing when they just let you guys know it.
- 23:18I'm going to try really hard to give you as many of the facts of
- 23:22the case without going out of our way to be too graphic, but there
- 23:29is going to be a description of sexual assault. Okay, I'll be rubbing
- 23:36my crystal. As he began forcing her into the backyard and lifting up her
- 23:42shirt, covering her face with it as he did, she decided it was
- 23:48best not to challenge him. She thought back to a class at school and
- 23:52what she had learned about stranger rape, because women have to think about these
- 24:00things, and it's clear that so many of these women and girls had very
- 24:08distinct thoughts about what they would or wouldn't do, or how something like this
- 24:15would affect them, and it just is so heartbreaking, it's crazy. And
- 24:21then you talk to a man and they're like, they've never had those thoughts,
- 24:25you know. I Mean, I'm sure some men do, but the
- 24:27majority of them don't have to think about that. Yeah, it's her Initial
- 24:37attempts to play along were unsuccessful. She began yelling for help, but no
- 24:44one heard her and no one was coming. That horrific realization settled in as
- 24:51he forcibly removed all of her clothes except her shirt before raping her. She
- 25:00tried to stand after he was finished, but he hit her in the face
- 25:03and kicked her in the stomach. God, before threatening to cut off one
- 25:08of her breasts as a souvenir. Oh my god, like that one guy,
- 25:17Jerry Brutos. I think fucking Jerry. Fucking Jerry. Oh. He
- 25:22instructed her to count to one hundred and then took off. After the attack,
- 25:27she sat crying before gathering herself enough to cover herself up with her t
- 25:33shirt. Then she began pounding on the window again. It was her boyfriend's
- 25:41mother that finally woke up to find her in that horrific state. How is
- 25:49anyone sleeping that heavily? Did they have age boys? And I mean yeah,
- 25:55does he have a sound machine and airplugs in an he's storing? I
- 25:59don't know, Wow, I don't know. It's just that kind of blew
- 26:04my mind because she's pounding on the window. Yeah, I hope it wasn't
- 26:10purposefully ignoring her, you know, not that I'm like accusing him of that.
- 26:14No, but you know, if you get in a fight, Yeah,
- 26:18and you don't realize how something like that could really result in obviously something
- 26:26far more harmful than he intended. Even if he was ignoring her like he
- 26:30couldn't have known no exactly. The woman brought her inside, providing her with
- 26:37a blanket and some clothes. Though the woman wanted to call the police,
- 26:41Warner refused. Looking back on that night, she'd said, I was scared.
- 26:48I was outside after curfew. Oh, so she thought she'd get in
- 26:53trouble yep, I mean just classic, you know, the victim blames themselves
- 27:00too often. Yeah. Eventually, when the woman returned her to her friend's
- 27:06home, they called the rape crisis hotline. Police were also notified, and
- 27:14to her dismay, they of course told her that she needed to call her
- 27:18mother. Hm. She remembered that call where she cried to her mother.
- 27:22As she explained, her mother and I'm going to try to say this delicately,
- 27:29her good for nothing piece of ship boyfriend arrived to pick her up at
- 27:36the hospital. Oh would you look at that? I guess I wasn't feeling
- 27:40that delicate. After all, this is the boyfriend that wouldn't wake up.
- 27:44Yep. Okay, yeah, but we're all about to find out why.
- 27:48Okay. I was just gonna ask. Yeah, nothing up to this point
- 27:52was his fault. Okay. He yelled at her all the way home what
- 28:02Alisa said? Sure enough, he laid into me, telling me it was
- 28:07all my fault, that I was a tease and had asked for it.
- 28:11Can I find it? This guy, I'm gonna cut his fucking dick off.
- 28:15I don't even care allegedly allegedly listen, in this instance, there may
- 28:22be a more important dick at the head of the line. I want to
- 28:26take all the dicks off, I mean, well, the bad ones.
- 28:30Yeah, okay, Oh god, that makes me so mad. Just like
- 28:37in Mallory's case, a lot of tragedy had been lain at the feet of
- 28:41a struggling young woman. You see, Alisa had lost her father just three
- 28:48years prior, when he died by suicide after hanging himself. No, though
- 28:55I'm sure it wasn't easy, Alisa made it out alive. She finished high
- 29:00school, then went on to marry and have a daughter. At the time
- 29:04of her interview, she was married to her third husband. Even though she
- 29:10still has family in the state of Oregon, she rarely visits because of the
- 29:14attack all those years ago. I don't blame her, listen, Alaska is
- 29:21beautiful, but I never want something to happen to someone that's so ugly that
- 29:27they flee their home state, regardless of what state it is. And the
- 29:33next best thing is to move to Anchorage and never come back. Yeah,
- 29:41kind of seems fucked well, especially now that he's getting out, Like fuck.
- 29:47I mean, she'll never want to come back, is my projection.
- 29:52Nineteen eighty was a busy year for Gilmour, it seems, yes, though
- 29:59it wouldn't be until decades later that two other victims' names and stories would be
- 30:04revealed. There's Colleen Kelly, who was just thirteen years old in nineteen eighty
- 30:12when she was assaulted by Gilmore thirteen, he broke into her Southeast Portland home.
- 30:22He raped her in October of that year, on her mother's birthday.
- 30:27Oh come on, yeah. She would later become a very strong voice amongst
- 30:37many advocating for victims of sexual assault. So good for her. I love
- 30:45when holy fuck women take their pain and suffering and turn it into good. Yeah.
