- 0:34Hello and welcome back. This is the More Carbs podcast.
- 0:37We are a team of dietitians and we talk every Thursday about
- 0:40sports nutrition for the girlies.
- 0:42My name is Jenna and I host this podcast.
- 0:44And my name is Riley. You'll also see me on this
- 0:46podcast. I am the owner and founder of
- 0:48Steady State Performance Nutrition.
- 0:50We specialize in helping female athletes recover from low energy
- 0:53availability and together along with Lily Rhymer, we are team
- 0:55steady state. Before we get into today's
- 0:57episode, we are going to do our high and low.
- 0:59So sharing just a little bit about our week, the good and the
- 1:01parts we wish we got a little bit differently.
- 1:03We do have a guest on today's episode too, which I'm really
- 1:05excited about. But Riley, can you kick us off
- 1:07with your high and low? I'm so.
- 1:08Excited about this episode when we have like an athlete on it,
- 1:12just I don't know, our athletes are so special to us and then
- 1:15when we get to share them with the world, like it has a special
- 1:17place in my heart. My high and low have to do a
- 1:19little bit of the same story. I feel like I've been doing this
- 1:22a lot lately, but I feel like there's so many like highs and
- 1:24lows of certain situations in life.
- 1:26A big low right now for me and Jenna, you know this, we've
- 1:29talked a lot about this off the podcast is my childcare
- 1:33situation. I'm laughing because if I'm not
- 1:35laughing, I'm crying. 2026 has just been a year for me in
- 1:40childcare. We have had some issues over the
- 1:43last couple of months with care. We were doing a nanny share.
- 1:46It was going well and then it kind of our nanny quit
- 1:49unexpectedly. It was rough waters kind of
- 1:51leading up to her quitting. And then we've just like been
- 1:53piercing things together the last couple of months.
- 1:56I don't know, it's just really stressful and I know all of the
- 2:00individuals who are listening who are moms, like understand
- 2:03this. It's just something that is so
- 2:06stressful. I would imagine that it feels
- 2:07quite stressful because like I feel like every morning and
- 2:10being on Pacific Time versus Eastern Time, I feel like I get
- 2:12a message from you at either like 5:00 AM or something like
- 2:15that. And you're like, we have care
- 2:16today or we don't have care today.
- 2:18And I just like want to say thank you to all of like the
- 2:20clients that work with steady state who have been so like
- 2:22understanding of Riley's kind of ever changing availability.
- 2:25And like also like a big shout out to Lily because I know that
- 2:27she stepped in and helped out a lot with things just because
- 2:30like we've needed her for the podcast and things like that.
- 2:33When Riley doesn't have care, she's really kind of stepped in
- 2:36and like helped out a ton. So big shout out to Lily, but
- 2:39also like my heart is with you and your family because I know
- 2:42that's really hard, not just for you, but like for everybody.
- 2:44Well, you just stole my high because that was my high because
- 2:47I feel like everybody has been so great and like understanding.
- 2:51If you're a client listening to this right now, you know that I
- 2:54probably rescheduled with you and I just want to say thank
- 2:56you. Even with like our discovery
- 2:58calls when we're like meeting new clients for our tier one
- 3:02program, they have been like so understanding people are like
- 3:04just bring your daughter to the call.
- 3:06Like we would love to meet Char and I'm like, no, she is like
- 3:09way too excited. But like thank you.
- 3:11And I just, I'm so thankful for you, Lily.
- 3:14Like all of our clients, everybody that supports steady
- 3:17state performance nutrition because it's just been a couple
- 3:20of months. It has been, but you've handled
- 3:22it really well. So like, I just want to like
- 3:24give you a big shout out too, because I know that a lot of
- 3:26that falls on you for like figuring that out and piering
- 3:28that together because we do work from home and you are in the
- 3:31role of mom and also business owner.
- 3:34And that's not an easy thing to balance.
- 3:35So like, I just want to give you credit too, because I think that
- 3:38like a lot of times, like you're, you're always so quick
- 3:41to like thank everyone around you.
- 3:42But like you've done a lot to make sure everybody around you
- 3:44is still taken care of. And yeah, we just love you.
- 3:47And we hope that child care works better for you here soon.
- 3:49And by we, I mean myself and the rest of the team.
- 3:51Steady state. Well.
- 3:52You're going to make me cry. Thank you.
- 3:54She goes to school, she's starting like her two class
- 3:58August 12th. So I keep joking that like on
- 4:01August 12th, I'm going to go to Bruzy brunch by myself.
- 4:03I don't even drink and I'm like, I'm going to go to brunch by
- 4:07myself after I drop her off and be like Hallelujah.
- 4:10I freaking made it. Yeah, sometimes you just need
- 4:13that though. Yes.
- 4:14How was your week going? Might sound so lame in
- 4:17comparison to such a heartfelt high and low that you just had
- 4:20in such like AI mean like this has been going on for a couple
- 4:23of weeks now that this has been happening for you guys so like
- 4:26mine just seems so silly, but of course it has to deal with bugs
- 4:29because that's the theme of my Arizona experience.
- 4:33I don't know what happened. We don't have an HOA in the
- 4:35neighborhood that we live in. That's not a problem but like
- 4:38people have chickens, they have beehives, things like that that
- 4:42they have as hobbies and that's fine.
- 4:44It's not personally a hobby of mine but if that's your damn
- 4:46like cool. I love it but I think someone's
- 4:48beehive got like knocked into or something like that because we
- 4:52went out walking yesterday. We were walking through swarms
- 4:55of bees, and I was terrified that I was going to get stung
- 4:59because there were so many of them.
- 5:01And it was just wild that there were so many of them, but just
- 5:04in like, concentrated pockets around like a couple of houses.
- 5:07So I feel like it was coming from that area.
- 5:09But yeah, we have a bee problem in our neighborhood.
- 5:12I'm cackling it not because you and the the bugs of Arizona, but
- 5:16just because like, you live in a very nice neighborhood and like,
- 5:20it sounds like you live in the middle of nowhere.
- 5:23Like, oh. Well, I know, I know.
- 5:24You live in. Like a very nice part of Phoenix
- 5:27and you have a very nice house and I'm just laughing.
- 5:30You're like a tarantulas in my house and like I gotta attack my
- 5:31bees and grasshoppers and. Yeah, no, it's it's a great
- 5:35neighborhood, don't get me wrong, and I love my neighbors.
- 5:37The neighbors here are fantastic, but they do have some
- 5:39hobbies that, you know, they wouldn't necessarily be my
- 5:42hobbies. And I don't know if that
- 5:43attracts more things perhaps or what the deal is.
- 5:46But I think it might just be part of like living in Arizona
- 5:49too and like growing up in Colorado, like there aren't
- 5:51bugs. Like it's a new thing for me.
- 5:53All of my clients that listen who live in Florida are just
- 5:55shaking their heads at me right now because I know that they
- 5:57deal with this like tenfold so. Jenna I went for a run when we
- 6:01were in Orlando for Disney World.
- 6:03I saw three alligators, 3 on one run.
- 6:06It was like a five mile run. It took me like what, 45
- 6:09minutes? I saw three alligators.
- 6:11I was like, the nature of Florida is just unmatched.
- 6:13I can never move there with me and whatever is not right with
- 6:16me and nature not compatible with that.
- 6:19Oh, my word. I can't believe that.
- 6:22Well, my high was gonna be that I didn't get stung by bees
- 6:24because like, I felt like that was definitely perhaps in the
- 6:27cards what we would have happened.
- 6:29You know what I'm laughing about right now?
- 6:30Because I thought that that might have been related when you
- 6:33got pooped on by a bird like 2 times in a week or two days in a
- 6:38row. Yeah, that hasn't happened.
- 6:40So maybe that's my high too. Like I've seen a lot of animals
- 6:43and like insects and things, but like nothing bad has happened to
- 6:47me. So that's also a big high.
- 6:48Right now we're on a two week streak.
- 6:50I think we both needed that two week streak for you, but.
- 6:53I did. Oh, man, my other high, if I had
- 6:56to pick another high, was that again, with my neighbors whom I
- 6:59love so much, there's a neighborhood book club.
- 7:01It's just so much fun to have like a group of girls that I go
- 7:05and chat with like after work every month or every other
- 7:07month. And we could talk about books
- 7:09and we just get to hang out. We all have dogs, and that's
- 7:11kind of how we all have got to know each other is just by
- 7:13walking our dogs through the neighborhood.
- 7:15And I'm just so thankful to have more of a community within the
- 7:18neighborhood that I live in here, more so than I have in
- 7:20other places. And that's my high, is that I
- 7:22have a great book club. I love that.
- 7:25Are you reading anything like as a group right now, or do you
- 7:27just like talk about the books you're reading?
- 7:29We pick a book as a group and we read it and everybody votes on
- 7:32it. Everybody gives, like, a summary
- 7:33or recap. But if there are people who
- 7:35haven't read the book, like, it's not a big deal either,
- 7:37which it's like very chill book club.
- 7:38Like, no one's like looking at you being like, you didn't read
- 7:40it. That's the nice thing about it.
- 7:42I love that reading has really, like, made a comeback.
- 7:45Yeah. Reading and running.
- 7:46I love it. I am.
- 7:48And both of those are spaces right now.
- 7:49So I am. I'm very easily influenced by
- 7:52the people. No, you're just a trendsetter.
- 7:55That's it, I'm ahead of the game.
- 7:57Let's go with that. Welcome.
- 7:59Today's episode we are talking about an athlete that Riley
- 8:01actually worked with and I'm so excited for her to be here and
- 8:04share her story. Today's guest is an athlete of
- 8:06many talents and even more miles.
- 8:08From four years of collegiate soccer to the high intensity,
- 8:11grit testing world of high rocks, she is obsessed with how
- 8:13the body moves, heals, and performs under pressure.
- 8:15She's currently a student at Sherman College of Chiropractic,
- 8:18where she's bridging the gap between elite level athleticism
- 8:20and clinical recovery. Whether she's prepping for her
- 8:22next competition or out walking her dog, Sammy, she's always
- 8:25looking for her next challenge. Please welcome to the podcast,
- 8:27Emily. Thanks, guys.
- 8:29Emily, thank you so much for being on this episode.
- 8:31We really appreciate you being here and kind of talking a
- 8:33little bit about like your journey.
- 8:34Do you mind sharing just a little bit of background about
- 8:36like how you got into like the world of sports, how you got
- 8:39into soccer, high rocks, all of that?
- 8:40Yeah, for sure. So I mean, I grew up playing
- 8:42sports. My dad was a three sport athlete
- 8:46when he was growing up. So I pretty much as soon as I
- 8:48could hold a ball, catch a ball, that's what we were outside
- 8:51doing. So my dad definitely had a big
- 8:53impact on that. I actually started out playing
- 8:55basketball and then I didn't grow much anymore, so that kind
- 8:59of halted that. A bunch of my friends convinced
- 9:01me to go out for soccer and then I fell in love with that and
- 9:04just continued on with that. Ended up playing four years in
- 9:07college at Southern Wesleyan University.
- 9:09Had a blast. It was a lot of fun.
- 9:11And then after I graduated, I kind of felt a little sad that
- 9:15it was over with and I missed competition, but I wasn't really
- 9:18sure like what I was exactly looking for.
- 9:20And then just fell into high rocks and loved it so much.
- 9:24Loved the competitive of it. And I've met a lot of great
- 9:27friends along the way. So super blessed to have found
- 9:29that. The student athlete, the
- 9:31hierarchs pipeline that is happening, I feel like it is
- 9:34such a retired with air quotes student athlete activity and I'm
- 9:39I love it. Yeah, take some brain power to
- 9:41do hierarchy. None.
- 9:42I feel like there's so much community in hierarchs as well,
- 9:45and so like going from being a student athlete and having your
- 9:48team all the time, you still kind of like get that
- 9:50camaraderie aspect of it too. Or at least that's my
- 9:52understanding, not having kind of ever been in the world sky
- 9:55rocks. But that's what I understand.
- 9:56Yeah, definitely. Like, I mean, once you finish, I
- 9:59think everybody just realized how much suffering they went
- 10:01through and you just kind of hug it out.
- 10:03So that's great. And then of course, like with
- 10:05double S competitions, you do have a teammate and they even do
- 10:08the like team relays now, which is for people.
- 10:11I haven't participated in either one of those, but I definitely
- 10:14want to. But even when you compete as an
- 10:16individual, the camaraderie afterwards is just amazing.
- 10:19I've met so many great girls through it, and we still keep in
- 10:22touch and chitchat and ask each other, hey, are you doing this
- 10:26one? Hey, are you going to DC?
- 10:27How you going to New York? Just to try to see if we'll run
- 10:29into each other again. So it's really nice to be able
- 10:31to keep in touch with everybody even though you don't see them
- 10:34every single day, just to know that, you know, you can always
- 10:36reach out and just say hey, and what's going on and stuff.
- 10:39That's nice. High Rocks is a relatively new
- 10:41sport, so for our listeners who might not be super familiar with
- 10:45High Rocks, do you mind giving us like a kind of a quick
- 10:47rundown of the event and what goes into it?
- 10:49Yeah, for sure. So I think a lot of people
- 10:51prejudge it as like a CrossFit competition, which is just
- 10:54anything but that. But it is a functional fitness
- 10:57race. There are 8 different stations
- 11:00and in between each station you're going to do a 1K run,
- 11:03which into miles that's like .6 miles.
- 11:06So the stations are going to be your ski erg, A sled, push sled
- 11:10pull, a burpee, broad jumps, which it's just awful.
- 11:14You just hit the pain cave so fast on that one.
- 11:17And then rowing farmers carries sandbag lunges and then you
- 11:21finish with wall balls. And so like, it's so tough
- 11:24because you're running under fatigue after every single
- 11:27station and then going into the stations, your heart rate is so
- 11:30elevated because you just came off a run.
- 11:32So it's just a lot of, there's a lot of grip for sure.
- 11:35But I think the biggest thing is like knowing how to run under
- 11:39fatigue and just like pushing your body like more than you
- 11:42thought it was capable of. I think we have a good guess of
- 11:44what your maybe least favorite station is, but do you have a
- 11:47favorite part of competition? Well, this past time in November
- 11:51when I compete in Atlanta, I think the runs were my favorite
- 11:54part. I was so much faster than I
- 11:57expected and I was just I was running and gunning.
- 12:00So running was definitely my favorite part this time.
- 12:03But other than that, I think the ski is always my favorite.
- 12:06I love the ski and it's the first one.
- 12:08So that's kind of sad because the rest of it just kind of goes
- 12:11downhill from that for me. Thank you for sharing a little
- 12:14bit about like your athletic background.
- 12:16I would love for you to kind of share a little bit about your
- 12:19nutrition background to your relationship with food and how
- 12:22that's developed and changed over the last couple of years.
- 12:24Yeah, when I started, you know, as a kid, I never really had any
- 12:27issues. Like I grew up, you know, kind
- 12:30of an only child. I had an older sister, but I we
- 12:33were so far apart in age that I basically grew up an only child.
- 12:35But you know, like dinners with my mom and dad were super
- 12:37normal. Like I never had any issues like
- 12:398 after practice, 8 before practice, you know, and then it
- 12:42was even really normal, I guess normally you could say in
- 12:45college until I hit my junior year, I guess.
- 12:47And then I think I just started to really look at other girls
- 12:51and start judging myself. And I was like, wow, these girls
- 12:54are tiny. Like what the heck, is there
- 12:56something wrong with me? And then I started really
- 12:58developing a pretty poor relationship with food,
- 13:01honestly. And I just felt like I needed to
- 13:03be smaller so I could be faster because I played outside back in
- 13:06college and like speed is such a big thing on the outsides.
- 13:09That's what I thought. And then going into my senior
- 13:12year, I'd I'd lost a good bit of weight and honestly, like my
- 13:16senior year, I didn't play to any high standards.
- 13:19I was probably a worse athlete, honestly.
- 13:22So my senior year was kind of a big let down for me as far
- 13:25performance goes, and I felt awful going into games.
- 13:28I was so tired, my legs were so heavy.
- 13:30So really in the long run, it didn't help whatsoever as far as
- 13:34like losing weight and not eating enough.
- 13:37And then even after I graduated, I think it was hard to kind of
- 13:40break out of that mold. I guess I'm still not eating
- 13:42enough, not feeling my body properly.
- 13:44And it really wasn't until I found Riley that, like, I was
- 13:47able to mentally get over that and I realized how much better I
- 13:52felt fueling my body with proper carbs, proteins, fats, fats,
- 13:57especially. We love fats.
- 13:58And then my performance in the gym started to just get better
- 14:02and better. My legs were fresh, My recovery
- 14:05was so much better. And just, I mean, overall, my
- 14:08performance just I wish I had Riley when I was in college
- 14:10because I probably would have been a way better soccer player.
- 14:12So she was just instrumental and helping me become, you know, a
- 14:16better athlete. I love that.
- 14:18Thank you so much for sharing about that.
- 14:20Riley is incredible. We love Riley.
- 14:22Was there any point in your journey that like you realized,
- 14:25recognize that underfueling was contributing maybe to like the
- 14:28lack of performance that you were experiencing?
- 14:30Or was it just like kind of coming across Riley's page and
- 14:33maybe picking up on some things that she was saying that maybe
- 14:35applied to you? Yeah, it was really random.
- 14:38Like one night I was just like, you know, doing my doom
- 14:40scrolling on Instagram before going to bed and like Riley
- 14:43popped up and I was like, wow, this like really resonates with
- 14:46me. Like, do you feel XY and Z?
- 14:48And I'm like, yeah, that's me. And then I kind of started
- 14:52looking at the website and I was like, obviously, like I, I
- 14:55hadn't had my period naturally since high school, I guess,
- 14:58because I got on the pill when I was in college to have the, the
- 15:02fake period, the placebo period, I guess.
- 15:04But I didn't know any better at the time.
- 15:06You know, I'd been having my period with the pill.
- 15:09And then once Riley and I'd met, we said get off the pill, see
- 15:12what happens. And I wasn't having it,
- 15:13obviously. But you know, like reading
- 15:15through Riley's page and stuff, I was like, this is me.
- 15:18Like, I think I need help, but I don't think I can do this on my
- 15:20own. Like, like I need a coach.
- 15:22Like I always respond better to a coach and somebody to just
- 15:25kind of like guide me through it.
- 15:27I needed that and I knew I did. And looking back on it, like I'm
- 15:30so glad I did because I have changed so much the past couple
- 15:34months working with Riley, like performance wise, but also like
- 15:37mentally wise, like mentally like I'm so much happier.
- 15:40My mind is so much clearer, which is obviously like super
- 15:43important for me going back to school.
- 15:44Like a carbs fuel my performance, but they also fuel
- 15:48me in school too. So having the pregame or pre
- 15:52exam snack helps so much. So it's been great working with
- 15:56Riley and I'm so thankful for her.
- 15:57Make me. Cry.
- 15:58Sorry. I'm like, you know?
- 16:00I'm like about to cry. Listen, no crying here.
- 16:04There's no crying in baseball. Yeah, or in period recovery,
- 16:07except we probably both cried at one point, so.
- 16:09Oh my God, tears of joy when I had my period.
- 16:12Like Riley knows this but Jenna doesn't.
- 16:14So I was at the gym, middle of workout, stopped and I was like,
- 16:17I think I just had my period. So I ran to the bathroom, went
- 16:20into the stall literally like had my period at the gym.
- 16:23I started crying in the stall because it was so happy and I
- 16:25was like, thank God, nobody's in here because I'd probably think
- 16:28I'm absolutely insane, but I'm like in my mind, I'm like
- 16:30screaming like, Oh my God, I just started my period like this
- 16:33is insane. So I did finish my session.
- 16:35I was like, OK, all right, proceed as normal.
- 16:37Now we're good. And then I went to my car had
- 16:39another like little like happy like freak out session.
- 16:42I messaged Riley told her and then I called my mom because my
- 16:45mom has been like on this journey with me too, because she
- 16:48just my mom loves me so much. I love her so much.
- 16:50And she knew that like I needed help too.
- 16:52So, so she's been a huge part of this as well.
- 16:55I called my mom and we had our little like happy session in the
- 16:58car and then and yeah, it was great.
- 17:00It was good. Good times, good times.
- 17:01I absolutely love that. I also love that you had such a
- 17:04strong like, support system through period recovery because
- 17:07I think that's such an important piece that a lot of people like,
- 17:10don't really think about. But like, if you have people in
- 17:12your corner that know what you're going through, that can
- 17:14encourage you because like, it definitely gets tough.
- 17:15Like there's a reason why I was so emotional when you got your
- 17:18period back because it's something that like you worked
- 17:20so hard for. So I love that your mom was
- 17:22invested in another cheerleader for you.
- 17:25Oh yeah. Now, my mom's always been my
- 17:26cheerleader ever since I was a kid.
- 17:28I mean, she was picking me up from practice at all my sports
- 17:31games. And you know, even after I
- 17:33graduated, she's been with me. She was with me for both my high
- 17:37rocks competitions. My biggest cheerleader.
- 17:39You know, I think I kind of black out a little bit during my
- 17:42high rocks competitions and I don't know, like I can't hear
- 17:45anything. I don't really see anybody but
- 17:47the one person that I usually do see, and here is my mom, and she
- 17:50is just the biggest cheerleader. Even though the first time she
- 17:53had no idea what was going on, she was like, I have no, I like,
- 17:56this was so new to me. And then it was so funny.
- 17:59The second time she was like, she's like, oh, my gosh, when
- 18:01you went into the rowing, you look so good.
- 18:04And I was like, wow, who is this?
- 18:05I was like, you know your stuff now, Mom, she was great.
- 18:08She's hilarious. But yeah, she's been my rock
- 18:11since I was a kid with sports. And she's awesome.
- 18:13Love her. She's probably going to listen
- 18:15to this and start crying too. So, you know, it's fine.
- 18:18It's fine. We're just all crying today.
- 18:20We're not all proud. Of you, I want to kind of touch
- 18:22on something that you skated over because you talked to about
- 18:25high Rocks, but I think you're not giving yourself enough
- 18:27credit because you don't only just do high rocks, you win high
- 18:31rocks. So can we please talk a little
- 18:34bit about High Rocks 2024 and then High Rocks 2025, both of
- 18:38those events being in Atlanta. Can we please talk about these
- 18:41events? Yes, we can.
- 18:43I'm humble. I'm sorry.
- 18:44So the first time I competed in high rocks, I won third overall
- 18:47in my age group, but that was before I had started my journey
- 18:50with Riley. Like honestly, like I'm
- 18:52surprised I did that. Well, like under fueling and
- 18:55everything, you know, I guess I just, you know, I had grit and
- 18:57everything, but I think after that I realized how much better
- 19:00I could have done if I had just felt better.
- 19:02Because I mean, I went into that competition with tired legs,
- 19:05heavy legs and just still under fueling.
- 19:08And obviously Riley and I connected and we've been working
- 19:11together for a while on my nutrition and she gave me a rock
- 19:15solid plan going into it. My second competition in
- 19:18Atlanta. I don't think I've ever been so
- 19:20nervous for a competition before.
- 19:22I was so nervous. Like, I wanted to like, puke,
- 19:24honestly, but my mom and I stayed in Atlanta that night,
- 19:27had a great little carb or meal with some pizza, and then woke
- 19:31up in the morning and Riley and I had my nutrition ready to go
- 19:34for the morning. And then in addition to that, I
- 19:36had two shots of espresso, which was phenomenal.
- 19:40But yeah, I was so nervous going into my second competition, but
- 19:42I felt so good. Like, I mean, woke up really,
- 19:45really early because I had the first heat.
- 19:47Of course, that's all right. Wasn't mad about it, was what it
- 19:50was. First run, I felt so good, felt
- 19:53so fresh. But I was like, Oh my God, I
- 19:54think I went out too hot. Like I think I'm going to tank.
- 19:57I think I'm going to tank. I just, I mean, I just kept
- 20:00going. It was crazy.
- 20:01And then I did end up winning that one.
- 20:03First overall women in Atlanta. I think the biggest difference
- 20:06was my running from the first one to my second one.
- 20:09Just for reference, like in the first competition in Atlanta, my
- 20:12average run was about a about a 410 to a 4:15.
- 20:16And then this in November in Atlanta when I won, my average
- 20:20KM was about 3:45 to 3:48 which. I wasn't even expecting like I
- 20:27told Riley, like I'm like, I think I'm just aiming for like
- 20:2935352. And then I did that
- 20:31consistently. I was like, who is she?
- 20:34And I think that just goes back to the prime example of like
- 20:36smaller doesn't equal faster because I had gained weight on
- 20:39my period journey and I was so much faster and I was so much
- 20:43better. All of my stations improved like
- 20:46tremendously and I was shaved almost 5 minutes off my time
- 20:50from my first tie rocks. It was amazing.
- 20:52Like I couldn't believe it. And a lot of it was my nutrition
- 20:57and just being fueled for my training sessions and then being
- 21:00properly fueled for my actual competition overall.
- 21:03Just it was crazy. I still can't believe it and
- 21:06it's been what, like 5 months now since I won?
- 21:09I'm sorry to put you on the spot.
- 21:10I just I really wanted to like highlight your success.
- 21:14And I also think that sometimes when we're under fueled and
- 21:18we're still having athletic success, that under fueling
- 21:21really gets swept under the table.
- 21:23Like, right, you did your first high rocks and you got third
- 21:25place. Like you made it onto the
- 21:27podium. Like what an amazing
- 21:28accomplishment. But like, you knew that you had
- 21:30more. Like you knew that wasn't your
- 21:32ceiling. And I think sometimes we think
- 21:34everything's OK because we've been successful, but like we can
- 21:37do more. Yeah, I'm glad that I knew that
- 21:40I hadn't reached my potential yet.
- 21:42Even though I placed third and I got on the podium, I still felt
- 21:45like I had more in the tank. But coming in third was great
- 21:48and everything. But I was like, I don't.
- 21:49I was like, I want the white flag.
- 21:51I was like, I want that. And I think that's what like
- 21:53pushed me over the edge to, to, you know, like reach out to
- 21:56Riley and partner with her, get me like on the right track.
- 21:59And I went from a Black Flag 3rd place to a white flag first
- 22:04place. And I think a lot of it was
- 22:06because I got my nutrition dialed in and I had great
- 22:10support for it. So no crying again, no.
- 22:14Crying. We're all gonna cry.
- 22:16No crying. First of all, I just wanna say
- 22:17congratulations on like so much success not only in the world of
- 22:21high rocks, but like also with your fueling because like
- 22:23fueling changes can be challenging.
- 22:25What do you feel like? We're maybe some of like the key
- 22:27things that Riley helped you do in between your first
- 22:30competition and your second high rocks that like really, really
- 22:33helped you specifically with those energy changes that you
- 22:37felt during competition. Yeah, I think, you know, once we
- 22:40had kind of taken a look at like what my diet was like before we
- 22:42started working together, Like I definitely wasn't getting enough
- 22:45fats in which I think that's just such a bad, like people
- 22:48just think fats are bad and like, no, they're so great for
- 22:50your hormones. Amazing.
- 22:52My favorite is goat cheese. I had to throw it out there.
- 22:54Riley knows. And then just making sure that I
- 22:56was having enough carbs to go into my heavier sessions was
- 23:00like super big. And then I think another thing
- 23:02that helped a lot was definitely like my post training fuel.
- 23:07I'm sure I'd do like my chocolate milk, absolute goat
- 23:10status chocolate milk because it was easy.
- 23:12I could take it with me and I always had it afterwards.
- 23:15And then like having and for my heavier or longer sessions, I
- 23:18was having a snack like during my session, which I think helped
- 23:21a lot. Just something that I could get
- 23:22down, something that was easy. And I think that played a huge
- 23:25role in it because I was like my body just like felt constantly
- 23:28safe that I was constantly feeling it.
- 23:31And I think that helped a lot. And then it was also like, I
- 23:34think Riley helped me change my mindset from like fearing food
- 23:38to like, like what I'm eating is helping me train.
- 23:40And like, it just kind of like came like almost like full
- 23:43circle that I'm like, what I'm putting into my body is helping
- 23:46me become a better person and a better athlete.
- 23:49Like not just a better athlete, but like going back to a better
- 23:51person. Like mentally, I was in a bad
- 23:53headspace and a lot of it was because of food.
- 23:55And then now, like my relationships have just improved
- 23:59like drastically. Like I'm constantly like hanging
- 24:01out with my classmates, going to study sessions, whereas like
- 24:04before I'm like, well, I don't know what we're doing.
- 24:07I can't control. Like, what if they like, what if
- 24:09they start eating? Like, what am I supposed to do?
- 24:11Like this and this and that and the other and so dumb.
- 24:13Like, I'm like, no, like, I want to go study with my classmates.
- 24:16I want to go hang out. I want to have a good time.
- 24:17Like, OK, we're going to go study at a coffee shop.
- 24:20Yeah, All right, cool. I get a latte and maybe a
- 24:22croissant. That's cool.
- 24:23And it's just stuff like that that you don't really realize.
- 24:26You don't realize how much food has an impact over you until you
- 24:30stop letting it. And you're like, I would never
- 24:32have done this, you know, two years ago, three years ago.
- 24:35And I'm like, wow, I've benefited not just as an athlete
- 24:38from this, but as a person, too. So that's great.
- 24:42Think there's so many benefits and you've just shared that.
- 24:44You've seen so many benefits of fueling your body properly, but
- 24:48taking that step and committing to this journey is something
- 24:51that's really, really scary. So for those athletes who are
- 24:54listening and resonate with what you're sharing, what advice do
- 24:57you have for them on getting started?
- 24:59Just start because you need to take the jump.
- 25:01Know that when you work with Riley or Jenner or Lily, it's so
- 25:05gradual that you're taking like you don't just start like
- 25:09jumping all in, like head first. Like they really do a great job
- 25:12of taking from you from like a zero to like gradually like
- 25:16A1A2A3 and like making small inclemental changes that you can
- 25:21continue on. I think that was the biggest
- 25:23part for me because I think I would have been, think I would
- 25:25have been a little bit more hesitant if Riley was like, all
- 25:28right, we're changing literally everything.
- 25:30I think I would have been like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, time
- 25:32out. That's too much, too much all at
- 25:34once. It's like small changes and then
- 25:36those small changes get to be bigger and bigger, bigger.
- 25:40And now the like the full picture is here and I have
- 25:43everything that I need me to continue to better myself.
- 25:47So I think that was was the biggest thing is it's not all at
- 25:51once guys. It's not like they literally
- 25:53just like shove you into the the deep end and you can't swim.
- 25:56Like they put the floaties on 1st and we, you know, we doggy
- 26:00paddle for a little while. They take the floaties off, but
- 26:03they're still with us and helping us and making changes.
- 26:06And then next thing you know, you know, you're like Katie
- 26:08Ledecky out here. It's great.
- 26:11I love the swimming reference you just had, like that was
- 26:14incredible. That was not planned whatsoever.
- 26:16I don't know where that came from to be honest.
- 26:19Katie Ledecky is amazing though. I will say one of my favorite
- 26:22female athletes. Ridiculous.
- 26:24And I guarantee you she loves carbs.
- 26:26Her feeling is actually one that we reviewed on the podcast,
- 26:29like, quite a while ago, like leading into the Summer
- 26:31Olympics. What was that almost two to
- 26:33three years ago? And she does.
- 26:35And she does chocolate milk. So you and Katie Ledecky have
- 26:38that in common. Chocolate milk.
- 26:39I'm telling you specifically the Horizon chocolate milk that has
- 26:43the straws if you're curious. Guys, I'm almost 27 and I love
- 26:47the chocolate milk with the straws.
- 26:48Sometimes the vessel really does change it.
- 26:51It's like a Capri Sun. Like are you telling me when it
- 26:53gets hotter outside you don't want to just stab a straw into a
- 26:57Capri Sun and sit outside? Like Oh my gosh that's just
- 27:00nostalgic. I might have to have to make a
- 27:02Publix run and see if I can find some.
- 27:04That sounds pretty good right now.
- 27:05You 2 with your Publix making me jealous.
- 27:07Well, actually, rather than I had also ventured a Harris
- 27:10Teeter quite frequently. Harris Teeter's got the goods,
- 27:13too. Good grocery shopping there on
- 27:14the East Coast you all have. Pretty nice, can't complain.
- 27:17All right, Emily, I do have some ending questions for you, but
- 27:20before I jump into those, they're kind of like some rapid
- 27:22fire questions. But before I do that, any last
- 27:25things that you want to say? Share any tips.
- 27:28Felt like I said a lot, but just know that like you got to start
- 27:31somewhere and it's better to be a little nervous or scared and
- 27:35just take the leap because in the end it's going to benefit
- 27:38you guys so much and you're going to be so thankful that you
- 27:40did it as far as like nutrition goes.
- 27:42But like if any athlete is like maybe be scared to like jump
- 27:45into like a new thing, like just do it because you might fall in
- 27:49love with it and realize like, wow, like I'm actually kind of
- 27:51good at this. So just take the leap, Don't be
- 27:53scared. Just RIP the Band-Aid off and go
- 27:56for it. There.
- 27:56You have nothing to lose and you will be a better athlete and a
- 28:00better person because of. It I love it.
- 28:02All right, here's some rapid fire questions for you.
- 28:04Deep breath, deep breath. So this is eat more Carbs
- 28:06podcast. So we have to know what your
- 28:08favorite carbohydrate is. Pasta, specifically my mom's
- 28:11spaghetti bolognese. Give it to me and give me a
- 28:14slice of garlic bread to go with it.
- 28:16I am. I'm golden.
- 28:17Love it. What is your favorite pre?
- 28:20Workout fuel right now. I have been loving the Welch's
- 28:25gummy snacks. So good, so easy.
- 28:27I was thinking about the other day.
- 28:28I wish they would bring the scooby-doo ones back though.
- 28:30Low key like I need my childhood nostalgia for a minute.
- 28:33The Scooby-doo ones, they were awesome.
- 28:35I just remembered like the bright blue one.
- 28:37They had the Super bright blue one.
- 28:39Yeah. Those were my favorites.
- 28:41Yeah. Yeah, I saved those until the
- 28:42end. If you had like multiple in the
- 28:44pack too, Oh my gosh, you were just hot stuff.
- 28:48You were the hottest kid in the lunch room.
- 28:49You were having an elite day for sure.
- 28:52I was. We were elite.
- 28:53I feel left out because I didn't eat these.
- 28:55Maybe I was the bottom of the table.
- 28:57Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry that you never had scooby-doo fruit
- 29:01snacks. Those are seared into like the
- 29:03cortex of my brain. I do know exactly what you're
- 29:06talking about though. I just don't think I ate them as
- 29:07a child. But like I do remember people
- 29:09like people would share them and I know that blue color is like I
- 29:13it's in my mind. I know exactly like guys are
- 29:14talking about, but I did not get to participate.
- 29:16Sad, so tragic. I want.
- 29:18To go find them now. I don't think they, I don't
- 29:21think they make them anymore. Like that's the saddest part.
- 29:24My next question you kind of already answered, but your
- 29:26favorite post workout fuel? Yeah, we're going chocolate milk
- 29:29for sure with the straw. With the straw.
- 29:31I don't know why it just. Hits differently.
- 29:33It does. It's so good.
- 29:34It's like a crisp, like Coke from McDonald's sometimes.
- 29:38Just hits different. Yeah, it does.
- 29:40And then this is kind of the hardest one, but like, we have
- 29:43to know because we're big shoot people here.
- 29:44What's your favorite pair of kecks?
- 29:46This is hard because I'm also a very big shoe person.
- 29:49All right, I'm going to break it, break it down a little bit.
- 29:51My favorite high rock shoe is the one that I just ran in what
- 29:53was the Puma DV8 Nitro love those for high rocks felt super
- 29:58great running in them and they also have decent traction for
- 30:01the sleds, which was great. What I've been running in
- 30:04recently is the ASICS Nova blast.
- 30:06Great, just like comfortable running shoe, like just for like
- 30:09easy chill runs. And then honestly, like if I'm
- 30:12just like lounging around, like give me my Birkin socks.
- 30:15Seriously, I will Burks and socks.
- 30:17Don't tell me anything different.
- 30:19Honestly, like that's it. So that was a lot of shoes, but
- 30:22like I'm a big shoe person. I have too many.
- 30:24My closet is full, but and I also can't part with any of them
- 30:28because they're sentimental. So they just kind of stay in the
- 30:30closet. Bury me in my stalks and socks,
- 30:33that's all I'm going to say. In my casket, my burks and socks
- 30:36better be on. That's such a soccer player
- 30:38answer though, Jenna. I'm shocked.
- 30:40Really. Yeah, Everybody, all soccer
- 30:43players wear their slides and their.
- 30:44Socks. Yeah.
- 30:45Well, I don't know, maybe it's a Colorado thing.
- 30:47Everybody does that. It's.
- 30:49True, everybody loves Birx and socks.
- 30:50Come on. If you don't, then you're lying
- 30:53to yourself. Yeah, I am also trying to
- 30:55convince Jenna to run in the Nova Blast because I also love
- 30:58the Nova Blast. I really like him.
- 31:00One of my one of my really good friends from college.
- 31:03She ran track and field and cross country and we've stayed
- 31:06in touch since we graduated. But I asked her like hey, I need
- 31:08a really good running new running shoe, what do you
- 31:10recommend? And she recommended the ASICS
- 31:12and honestly they've been great. I love them so much.
- 31:15OK, well you guys might have convinced me.
- 31:17I might have to go pick up a pair.
- 31:19I will link all of your favorite shoe links so that way everybody
- 31:22can get your favorite shoes that you recommend.
- 31:25Do you have social media that you want to share?
- 31:27Yeah, for sure. I'm not much to post anybody
- 31:30that I mean, anybody can send me a DM if you just want to talk
- 31:33about like starting the journey or anything like that.
- 31:35But my Instagram is Emily Courier 12 and I know my last
- 31:39name is really hard to spell. So it's EMILYCOR RIHE R12 on
- 31:47Instagram. Fun fact, 12 was not my soccer
- 31:50number. It was actually my basketball
- 31:51number and I just never wanted to change it.
- 31:53So it just is what it is. I wore 7 in soccer because I had
- 31:57a big ego and thought I was Cristiano Ronaldo.
- 31:59Obviously, Clearly, clearly. OK.
- 32:01We're going to also leave all of your contact information in the
- 32:04podcast show notes. That way, if anybody wants to
- 32:07reach out, ask you questions, or maybe even like chat about high
- 32:10rocks and upcoming competitions that you might be preparing for,
- 32:13we will do that. If anybody needs a double S
- 32:15partner, hit me up. Riley's eyes got big.
- 32:17Riley, are you going to do? It I my eyes went big because
- 32:19I'm looking for people to help partner with her that aren't me.
- 32:23If we got Lily, we could do the relay 4.
- 32:26That's true, that's true. Can I only do the running part
- 32:30though? You got to.
- 32:31Pick. You got to at least pick two
- 32:33stations that you could do. Wait I can run and do 2
- 32:36stations? OK can I push?
- 32:38I'll burpy broad jump. No, you would need a pull and
- 32:40burpy broad jump because they have to be.
- 32:42So you have to do like back-to-back.
- 32:44So like the first one would be like ski push, pull, burpee, bra
- 32:47jump, row, farmer's carries and then somebody's really got to
- 32:51take it and do lunges and wall balls.
- 32:53Lily can do that. I'll do.
- 32:54Lily's not here to do herself. I just threw her under the bus.
- 32:57Yeah, that's rough. That's tough right there.
- 32:59Holy Quads. Row and do the farmer's farmers.
- 33:02Carry all right then oh, that means I get the ski sweet.
- 33:05All right, we're not just scheming up here.
- 33:07Quick little high rocks relay group right now Everybody better
- 33:10everybody better watch out. She has no idea she's doing wall
- 33:14balls and lunges. I feel bad, tough quads on fire.
- 33:18She doesn't know these things until she listens to these
- 33:20episodes and then she's like, I just ran 1/2 marathon, now I
- 33:22have to do a team. High rocks.
- 33:24Lily, we love you. We're not forcing you into
- 33:26anything. We promise.
- 33:27Just if you want. We will leave all of Emily's
- 33:30contact information in the podcast show notes.
