- 0:00Your brain is wired by the relationships you tolerate.
- 0:03If you live in chaos, your nervous system learns chaos.
- 0:06If you live in criticism, your mind learns self doubt.
- 0:10And if you live in unpredictability?
- 0:11If you live in unpredictability, your body stays on alert.
- 0:14And when peace finally shows up, it can feel unfamiliar, even
- 0:19uncomfortable. And that doesn't mean that peace
- 0:21is wrong. It means that your brain is
- 0:23trained for survival. Welcome to Rising Thriver Doctor
- 0:41J Nicole. I'm Doctor J Nicole, therapist,
- 0:44educator, and someone deeply committed to helping you
- 0:46understand not just what you feel, but why you feel it.
- 0:49And today we're going deeper into something that has
- 0:52resonated with so many of you. The idea that the brain adapts
- 0:56to what you repeatedly experience.
- 0:59And if you're serious about evolving your life, your
- 1:01relationships, and your standards, you have to
- 1:04understand this. You don't just tolerate
- 1:06behavior, your nervous system learns to expect it.
- 1:10Now let's unpack that right Your brain doesn't care whether
- 1:14something is healthy, it cares whether something is familiar.
- 1:18The brains primary job is survival.
- 1:21Not happiness, not fulfillment, not destiny, survival.
- 1:25And if you grow up in environments where love comes
- 1:28with yelling, care comes with criticism, attention comes with
- 1:32inconsistency or safety comes with walking on egg shell, your
- 1:35brain learns to adapt. It builds neural pathways around
- 1:39these experiences. It learns.
- 1:41This is what connection feels like.
- 1:43This is what normal feels like. This is what I should prepare
- 1:46for. And here's the part that people
- 1:48miss. The brain does not distinguish
- 1:51between this hurts me and this is familiar.
- 1:54Familiar often wins. And that's why people stay in
- 1:57dynamics that exhaust them. Not because they're weak, not
- 2:00because they're stupid, not because they don't know better,
- 2:04but because their nervous system has been conditioned, and
- 2:08conditioning is powerful. So let's talk about chaos.
- 2:12If you're repeatedly exposed to emotional instability,
- 2:16arguments, hot and cold behavior, even unpredictable
- 2:19moods, your nervous system begins to operate in a
- 2:23heightened state. You can become hyper aware.
- 2:26You can start scanning for tone shifts.
- 2:29Your you may over analyze text messages or anticipate
- 2:33disappointment. You prepare for the emotional
- 2:35drops. Your body even releases stress
- 2:38hormones more easily. So your baseline becomes
- 2:43tension. And when tension becomes the
- 2:44baseline, calm can feel suspicious.
- 2:48You meet someone steady, they communicate clearly, they follow
- 2:51through, they don't disappear. And instead of instead of
- 2:55relaxing, you feel restless, right?
- 2:58You think this is boring, There's no spark or I don't know
- 3:03if I'm attracted to them. But what you might actually be
- 3:06feeling is withdrawal from adrenaline.
- 3:10Chaos stimulates the nervous system, and predictability
- 3:14actually regulates it. And regulation can initially
- 3:17feel flat to someone that's trained for intensity.
- 3:20And as I've said before, intensity is not intimacy, it's
- 3:25simply stimulation. And if you've been living in
- 3:29stimulation, your brain will crave it even when it cost you
- 3:33your peace. Now let's talk about criticism.
- 3:36If you spend enough time around someone who minimizes you,
- 3:39questions your judgement, make subtle jokes at your expense,
- 3:43they invalidate your emotions or even suggest this one.
- 3:46I know everyone's hurt. You're too sensitive.
- 3:49Your brain begins to internalize that right?
- 3:52And the repetition, it builds identity.
- 3:55And if someone repeatedly critiques you, eventually you
- 3:58start critiquing yourself before they even speak or when they're
- 4:02no longer around, right? They become a permanent voice in
- 4:05your head, living rent free. And So what you'll do is you'll
- 4:09pre correct, you over explain. You might shrink your opinions
- 4:13if you share them at all, right? You apologize for things that
- 4:17don't require an apology. You begin doubting your
- 4:20intuition. And here's what's important.
- 4:22That doesn't mean you're insecure.
- 4:24It means that your brain adapted to reduce conflict.
- 4:28So right you learn to be a peacekeeper and self doubt can
- 4:32and become protective. However it could also lead to
- 4:36some really unhealthy and toxic patterns.
- 4:38And if you're second guessing yourself first, maybe you won't
- 4:42be blindsided. That is a typical adaptation.
- 4:46But now your internal voice sounds like the environments you
- 4:49once tolerated. And people don't always realize
- 4:52that when they say, I don't know why your confidence dropped or
- 4:55they're just like, why are you so insecure, right?
- 4:57That confidence or security, it didn't randomly disappear, was
- 5:02slowly eroded. Erosion is a very, very slow
- 5:05process. It's not anything dramatic
- 5:07because here's the truth about that.
- 5:09If it was dramatic, you wouldn't stay around, right?
- 5:13So if it was obvious, you'd be out of there like yesterday.
- 5:16So it's not loud. It's very quiet, very subtle,
- 5:20and it's consistent and it comes through what you tolerate.
- 5:24And This is why boundaries are so important.
- 5:27So if it bumped you, if you felt a little something in your soul,
- 5:30your spirit, something doesn't feel right, speak about it.
- 5:33Just say, hey, I don't like how that made me feel.
- 5:36That was a little rough. You need to handle me with care.
- 5:39You know, you need to share those types of things with
- 5:41people. Otherwise they think that it's
- 5:43fine. Before we continue today's
- 5:45conversation, I want to share something that has become part
- 5:47of my personal self-care routine.
- 5:49I've partnered with Canvas Beauty, a black woman owned
- 5:52beauty brand built around confidence, community and
- 5:55intentional self-care. Their products are designed to
- 5:58help you take care of your body while feeling good and the skin
- 6:01you're in. And if you've been following
- 6:03Rise and Fried, you already know caring for yourself is not
- 6:05vanity, it's alignment. And if you want to try Canvas
- 6:08Beauty for yourself, you can use my affiliate link in the show
- 6:11notes and use my code Genie 3 for a discount at checkout.
- 6:16Now let's get back to you. Today's episode, right?
- 6:20If you've ever been in a relationship where plans change
- 6:23last minute communication is inconsistent, affection was
- 6:26conditional, apologies were rare, and you never quite knew
- 6:30where you stood in the relationship.
- 6:32Your nervous system may have learned hyper vigilance.
- 6:35So hyper vigilance is when the body stays on alert, You check
- 6:39your cell phone constantly, you might replay conversations,
- 6:43analyze some of those like micro expressions that you've seen
- 6:47them. You prepare for abandonment, you
- 6:50prepare for conflict, and you stay mentally on.
- 6:53And that can be exhausting. Now, what I will say, even
- 6:58though hyper vigilance is not a positive experience, you've
- 7:01unintentionally become an expert in human behavior.
- 7:06You know how to scan and analyze the threats before they happen.
- 7:11But we want to get you out of that chronic state, right?
- 7:13And here's the part that's hard to hear.
- 7:16If you tolerate unpredictability long enough, predictability can
- 7:20feel underwhelming and unpredictability can become your
- 7:24norm. And usually the unpredictability
- 7:28can create spikes. The spikes feel intense.
- 7:31You feel something and that intensity, it feels meaningful.
- 7:35But meaning and intensity are not the same.
- 7:38And the body might confuse anxiety with attraction.
- 7:41So sometimes those butterflies that you feel, they are not
- 7:45always good, OK. And so you can confuse that with
- 7:49that. You can confuse that uncertainty
- 7:52with chemistry. And you might interpret relief
- 7:55as love, but relief is not love. Relief is the absence of the
- 7:59threat is the absence of that inconsistency.
- 8:02And you've been living in threat.
- 8:04And if you've been living in threat, relief feels powerful.
- 8:09But relief should not be the highest bar.
- 8:12Safety should be the highest bar.
- 8:14This is where sometimes people can get stuck.
- 8:17They finally meet someone emotionally steady and they
- 8:20leave a chaotic situation. Or they raise their standards
- 8:24and instead of feeling empowered, they feel unsettled.
- 8:27The quiet, oh man, it can feel so loud.
- 8:31And the stillness might be unfamiliar or strange, and they
- 8:34can start questioning themselves.
- 8:36Why do I feel like this? Like something doesn't feel
- 8:39right, or it even feels weird that there's nothing wrong, or
- 8:43they're looking for something wrong for that other shoe to
- 8:45drop, right? And that's because your nervous
- 8:48system is recalibrating. You were trained to survive
- 8:53turbulence, and now you're asking it to relax and calm
- 8:58water. And that transition takes time.
- 9:01So be kind to yourself, have compassion.
- 9:05And unfortunately, many people sabotage peace because they
- 9:09misinterpret that discomfort. And discomfort doesn't always
- 9:12mean mean misalignment. Sometimes discomfort is growth.
- 9:17Discomfort means that your body is learning a new baseline.
- 9:21Healing requires you to sit in that recalibration period long
- 9:25enough for peace to feel normal. So let's zoom out a little bit.
- 9:30This isn't just about dating. Your brain is also wired by your
- 9:34friendships, the environments like work, your family dynamics,
- 9:38spiritual communities. And if you tolerate disrespect
- 9:42at work, your brain learns to brace it.
- 9:44And I know a lot of you are living through that right now.
- 9:47If you tolerate gossip and friendship, your brain learns to
- 9:51be on guard. And if you tolerate spiritual
- 9:54manipulation, your brain learns confusion around authority and
- 9:58you can become accustomed to tension, and tension can seep
- 10:02into your personality. Some people say, you know, I'm
- 10:05just an anxious person. I just worry, like a lot like
- 10:08that. It's just how who I am, not how
- 10:10I am, but who I am taking it on as identity when in actuality
- 10:15it's not personality, it's not identity, it's conditioning.
- 10:19And sometimes we are not naturally guarded.
- 10:22We've adapted and we've been that way for so long we don't
- 10:26know the difference. Now don't get me wrong.
- 10:28And adaptation is brilliant and it speaks to how wonderfully and
- 10:33magnificently we are created. But you are allowed to update
- 10:38your program, your wiring, your conditioning.
- 10:41So let's talk about what you can do.
- 10:43Because this is not about blame. This is about awareness.
- 10:48And change begins with awareness, and awareness gives
- 10:51you options. So #1 let's audit your
- 10:55tolerances, right? That might sound a little funky.
- 10:58So what I want you to do is ask yourself, what if I normalize
- 11:02that actually cost me peace? Where am I chronically tense?
- 11:05Who makes me feel like I need to shrink?
- 11:08What dynamic feels familiar but draining?
- 11:12And I want you to write those things down.
- 11:15Now, you might need to take some of those questions one at a time
- 11:19because it could get a little heavy.
- 11:20Different things may come up. And I want you to take this as
- 11:24much as you can at a pace that feels good to you, OK?
- 11:30And clarity can help to disrupt that conditioning.
- 11:34I don't want you to judge it, just notice what comes up, OK?
- 11:38And then two, interrupt the pattern in small ways.
- 11:42So rewiring your conditioning, your programming, it doesn't
- 11:46start with dramatic exits or scenes, OK?
- 11:49It starts with micro decisions and micro behaviors, right?
- 11:54So that could look like saying something like that doesn't work
- 11:57for me. Not responding immediately,
- 12:00letting someone sit in the consequence of their
- 12:03inconsistency. And it might feel uncomfortable
- 12:07and that's okay. You have to learn for there to
- 12:09be gaps and override that instinct to close that gap
- 12:16because it might make you feel more comfortable for that to be
- 12:19closed, but it doesn't help with the situation.

- 13:14That's UNICE. Thank you for rising with us.
- 13:18Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
- 13:21It could also look like choosing not to over explain.
- 13:25Now this is the one right here that a lot of us do a lot of
- 13:29times because we're used to responding to our caregivers,
- 13:34right? Whether that's your parents,
- 13:35your grandmother, aunties, uncles, whoever, the caregivers
- 13:38where in your life, right? You got to make it make sense.
- 13:40Now, why would you do that, right?
- 13:42How many of us have heard that before?
- 13:44So you want to avoid doing that and your friendships and your
- 13:48relationships, right? Because this is not a parental
- 13:52dynamic. Your brain will build new
- 13:55pathways through repetition, so by starting with those small
- 13:59things, you can start to feel more comfortable.
- 14:02And you keep repeating that new behavior and it'll become
- 14:05natural to you. So at first it will feel
- 14:08unnatural, but just give it some time.
- 14:10Next .3 we want to strengthen environments that feel calm.
- 14:16So if peace feels boring, then you need to spend some time
- 14:18there. Anyway, you got to get used to
- 14:20it. So that's being in stable
- 14:22relationships where it's not always drama, you're not having
- 14:26to attend to someone else emotional needs, right?
- 14:28And also looks like having some consistent mentors, people that
- 14:32you can talk to that can help you see the dynamic better and
- 14:36like to help you navigate it, right?
- 14:38And you also want to engage in those grounded conversations,
- 14:41making sure that yourself and the others involved are prepared
- 14:46and we're not forcing those conversations and quiet
- 14:50routines. These are great for you.
- 14:52Take that time that you need, need.
- 14:54You want to build prayer habits that are consistent and steady
- 14:59rather than out of desperation. So we want to get in the habit
- 15:03of talking to God and going to Jesus to intercede for us, not
- 15:07just when we're in crisis, also when we're on the up, OK, and as
- 15:12we're continuing to progress. And your nervous system will
- 15:15learn safety through this exposure.
- 15:18And the more you expose it, the more regulated it becomes,
- 15:24right? So being in those safe and
- 15:26regulated environments definitely help. 4, you got to
- 15:29separate attraction from activation.
- 15:32When you meet someone new and you feel that strong pool, just
- 15:36pause a little bit and you got to ask about the connection.
- 15:39Is this connection or activation?
- 15:42Am I calm or am I on edge? Do I feel chosen or am I trying
- 15:47to win sometimes? Am I being engaged or am I
- 15:50chasing? Right?
- 15:52Your body will give you data. You just have to be still and
- 15:56allow yourself the time and space to interpret it.
- 15:59So let me leave you with this. Your brain is wired by what you
- 16:03tolerate, But if it's also rewired, also rewired by what
- 16:08you practice, you're not broken. You've adapted.
- 16:11You've survived. But survival mode is not meant
- 16:14to be your permanent state of being.
- 16:17And if peace feels unfamiliar right now, that does not mean
- 16:21that you're incapable of it. It means that you're learning a
- 16:24new baseline. So here's the reflection I want
- 16:27to leave you with. What have I been tolerating that
- 16:30is training my nervous system in the wrong direction?
- 16:33Drop one word in the comment is that chaos is a criticism,
- 16:37inconsistency, silence, disrespect.
- 16:40What is it? I just want you to name it
- 16:43because what you name you can change and change starts with
- 16:48awareness. Now before we go, if today's
- 16:51conversation resonated with you, I want to invite you to stay
