- 3:29Anyway, so that's that.
- 3:30Let's get into this week's special show with our special guest, Alex McFadden.
- 3:35I'm so thrilled to finally bring Alex to the show.
- 3:37I've been watching him from afar for some time.
- 3:40He's built an incredible brand for himself up in Vancouver, British Columbia area.
- 3:45What you get with Alex is professional mortgage advice and a pug.
- 3:49That's right.
- 3:50A pug.
- 3:51You know, the dog, the pug.
- 3:52You got to hear Alex's stories incredibly compelling and give you some quick facts just
- 3:56as a setup before we get into this week's episode.
- 3:59So in 2015, basically Alex started over from ground zero, started from scratch in his
- 4:04market.
- 4:05No referral partners.
- 4:06No business.
- 4:07No nothing.
- 4:08And in 2018, he helped over 204 families purchase a home for the tune to the tune of $85 million.
- 4:16Folks, three years.
- 4:18That's a three year trajectory from zero to 204 families helped 85 million.
- 4:25You want to know how we did it?
- 4:26Tune in to this episode.
- 4:28So Alex decided to go all in.
- 4:30I do his reservations and decided to put a brand includes his dog, which is a pug.
- 4:36And now actually has two dogs, Ernie and Jacks and you hear a little bit more about them.
- 4:40But what a brand.
- 4:41He's built online Instagram.
- 4:42I'm putting links to his all his socials in the show notes, which you can look them up
- 4:46on Instagram for sure.
- 4:48The mortgage pug.
- 4:49Right.
- 4:50That's where you'll find him on Instagram.
- 4:51You'll find him on YouTube.
- 4:52You'll find him on Facebook.
- 4:54And what you'll hear from his story is that he's focused on the long game and he's focused
- 4:59on creating education, creating engagement with his community, his local community of both
- 5:05real to referrals, but also his local community of potential home buyers and sellers and all
- 5:09that kind of stuff.
- 5:10And I mean, look at the results speak for them for themselves, right?
- 5:12Three short years, 85 million in production, 204 units.
- 5:15You got to hear this guy's story and how he's doing it.
- 5:18There's a lot of a ha's and takeaways in this that you can borrow and utilize for yourself.
- 5:22Here's the thing.
- 5:23Don't try and copy.
- 5:24As Alex says, be you, be real and make it fun, right?
- 5:27That's what Alex does.
- 5:28He makes it fun.
- 5:30And it's a lesson in personal branding and becoming a modern originator.
- 5:33If you want to leverage video, digital content and all these different platforms so that
- 5:37people are attracted to want to work with you, that the price sensitivity goes way down
- 5:41that there's no selling.
- 5:43And literally you've built what is, is, you know, the ultimate goal that I think we
- 5:48want to check out to you saying, Hey, man, I need to buy a house, saw your stuff following
- 5:52you for a while.
- 5:53You know, you're my man.
- 5:54Right.
- 5:55Let's go make it happen.
- 5:56If you're driving, come back and listen to this the second time, go follow Alex, check
- 6:00out.
- 6:01See what he's doing and see what you can borrow and learn from Alex and the mortgage
- 6:04bug.
- 6:05So with that said, let's get into this week's show.
- 6:09Alex, welcome to the show.
- 6:17Hello, Jeff.
- 6:18Thank you for having me.
- 6:19I appreciate it, my friend.
- 6:20From far up north across the border, man, what is that?
- 6:25Listen, I can see, I can see the border from my house.
- 6:28That's how far away I am.
- 6:29I'm like five minutes away.
- 6:30Good.
- 6:31You're nice and close.
- 6:32You're nice and close.
- 6:33All right.
- 6:34So for the listeners who want to know who is Alex McFaden, tell, by the way, did I pronounce
- 6:37that correctly?
- 6:38It's a bad, but that's OK.
- 6:39That's OK.
- 6:40Hey, man, my last name is Zimfer.
- 6:41So trust me.
- 6:42All right.
- 6:43So tell us who you are.
- 6:44You know, quick background.
- 6:45Why do you love loans?
- 6:46And then we'll get into it.
- 6:47Man.
- 6:48All right.
- 6:49So obviously, you know, my name now at this point right now, most people don't even know
- 6:50my name.
- 6:51They're starting to figure it out.
- 6:52Most people know me as the mortgage plug, which is my brand, if you will, my handle.
- 6:58And it's kind of funny how it's morphed into that.
- 6:59Where people happen, their phone is the mortgage plug.
- 7:02Why do I like loans?
- 7:03I don't know that I like loans to be completely honest with you.
- 7:06I like the opportunity that serving these people, these families and achieving goals, whether
- 7:10be our partners or the families.
- 7:12I like that side of it.
- 7:13I like the problem solving.
- 7:14I like the marketing aspect.
- 7:15I don't necessarily care much for the actual loans.
- 7:18I don't know if that sounds crazy.
- 7:20But I say that it finds something like, what?
- 7:21Do you like what I mean?
- 7:22You know so much about it.
- 7:23Now, I actually enjoy the other aspects.
- 7:27So hopefully that answers your question on that.
- 7:29I think you asked who I am.
- 7:30That's a big thing.
- 7:32Well, obviously, I'm from way up here in Canada, way up North.
- 7:35I'm not sure if you had too many people on the show from that.
- 7:37I've been licensed since about 2011, but I had only had brief period where I was doing
- 7:43kind of a pseudo sales role.
- 7:44I didn't even know what I was doing left the industry, came back January 1, 2015 after
- 7:49a major health incident, and came back with a vengeance, joined up with a team, left
- 7:54a team nine months later, started my own thing, and started my own team six months later.
- 7:59And here we are today.
- 8:00Okay.
- 8:01So did I hear you correctly?
- 8:02You came back into the industry in 2013?
- 8:04I came back in 2015.
- 8:052015, sorry.
- 8:062015.
- 8:07All right.
- 8:08So real quick, give us 2018 numbers, units.
- 8:10What did that look like?
- 8:112018, $85 million of a billion, $204 for people that we helped or Twitter for
- 8:19units, whatever way you want to look at it.
- 8:20No, thank you.
- 8:21Thank you for that correction.
- 8:22I got to learn to say that because it's actually more accurate.
- 8:25Well, it's kind of funny because the technical definition, we say units or deals or files
- 8:31or whatever, but we just try and shift our mindset by saying that, and I thought it was
- 8:34really corny at the start, but I truly believe in that mindset, focus chip, and even just
- 8:39saying it, just saying it out loud is impactful to the way that you feel about what you're
- 8:43doing, right?
- 8:44100% man.
- 8:45Absolutely.
- 8:46It's an interesting topic.
- 8:47I've been focusing on that a lot lately, but you're right.
- 8:49It's like, how do you see yourself?
- 8:51Are you seeing yourself as doing a unit, doing a loan, or are you seeing yourself as helping
- 8:54a family?
- 8:55That shows up in how you communicate and everything you do.
- 8:58No question.
- 8:59And to your point, so you're asking a little bit of our numbers, you know, the funny thing
- 9:02about it is I'm going to that right now is I'm looking at my business and breaking
- 9:05apart pretty in a lot of detail right now, doing a little bit of a review of you all.
- 9:09And I don't track my numbers a ton, especially not throughout the year.
- 9:13I prefer not to.
- 9:14I mean, I get a general gauge as to where we are, you know, week by week, but I'd prefer
- 9:17not to look at, you know, what we're closing, I look at my activities, and I look more
- 9:20on exactly what we're doing that's jeering those results because I can't always control
- 9:25the outcome.
- 9:26You know, our business has been phenomenal.
- 9:28We've doubled every year since 2015.
- 9:30So when from 10 to 20 to 40 to 85, you know, our goals this year are not to actually double.
- 9:36My focus this year is to actually improving my team process and grow.
- 9:40And we'd like to improve by about 50% up to 125 for 2019, especially in a more challenging
- 9:46market that we're facing right now up here.
- 9:47Okay.
- 9:48So this is awesome.
- 9:49And I want to pause for a second.
- 9:50You're just to highlight for those who may listening may have not noticed in 2015, you
- 9:54started from ground zero, right?
- 9:57Correct.
- 9:58Zero volume.
- 9:59And in three years, you hit 85 million over 214 families helped, 204.
- 10:03Sorry.
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:05That's a pretty fast growth, man.
- 10:06I appreciate you saying that.
- 10:07What is the focus on something you get there?
- 10:08Yeah.
- 10:09Good, good lesson right there.
- 10:10You said a couple of things that are actually are really learning gems.
- 10:13You're talking about the numbers.
- 10:14And I think this is a huge, huge, huge lesson.
- 10:16I don't want it to go overlooked is you said you can't control the outcome.
- 10:20So you focus on, essentially, you said this controlling on the activities.
- 10:23That's what you control.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:25That's pretty special when you're starting because when you're starting and you're learning,
- 10:29you don't know about, you know, how people are going to perceive you.
- 10:31What type of information you're sending out of receiving.
- 10:33What's going to get funded?
- 10:34What's not going to get funded?
- 10:36You know, I imagine it's the same in the US as just in Canada.
- 10:38We've gone through so many rule changes in the last three years and guideline changes
- 10:42that are mine spinning all the time.
- 10:44And so I can't always control that.
- 10:45I can't control if someone's going to skip off on me one place or another, but I can
- 10:48control primarily what I'm doing day to day.
- 10:50Now, like I mentioned before, my goal is not necessarily to double this year because now,
- 10:55based on what we're doing, we know what we can do.
- 10:57And at this point, we're starting to focus a little bit more on that efficiency.
- 11:00Now we're starting to break down a little bit more detail.
- 11:02Okay, how can we control that outcome a little bit more?
- 11:04Because you can't always, like you can't always control the outcome.
- 11:07You can always control your action.
- 11:09Control the controllables.
- 11:10Don't worry about what you can't, right?
- 11:12Control the controllables.
- 11:13That's good.
- 11:14Why are you focused on controlling the process?
- 11:16Are you just looking for to deliver even a higher level of customer experience?
- 11:19100%.
- 11:20For me, why is that the priority though?
- 11:22I want to understand why that's the priority.
- 11:24Well, I mean, for years to date right now, majority of our business comes from partners
- 11:28in the industry, traditionally, real estate agents, financial planners, you know, through
- 11:32social media, friends, spear, that sort of thing.
- 11:35But I mean, that's a lot of work and there's a lot of chasing involved and there's a lot
- 11:38of educating and a lot of it.
- 11:39It's just a lot of work, you know, and we all know that our databases is very valuable.
- 11:45So in my opinion, if you focus primarily on that experience, whether it's for your partners,
- 11:50your clients before, after, during, then those people are likely to want to continue
- 11:54to work.
- 11:55I mean, this is not rock science.
- 11:56Like they'll work with you more in the future.
- 11:57And I've already started to feel that in my business at this point.
- 12:00Now as we move in and next year, enter year five, this is when I anticipate this will
- 12:03likely take over.
- 12:04And if they remember how good that experience was before, why would they ever go anywhere
- 12:07else?
- 12:08So we invest a lot of time, a lot of energy now going forward and before, but especially
- 12:13now, Intel experience so that, hey, listen, I don't have to be quite as much of that
- 12:17brown work to keep our base, our bases are database.
- 12:20That's how we continue to stay consistent.
- 12:22All the extra outsourcing and all the extra lead generation, whether it be through whatever
- 12:26manner is now, like, nice thing on the cake, really at the end of the day, does that make
- 12:31sense?
- 12:32No, 100% make sense.
- 12:33So what you're trying to do is really, or if I can use the word organically, organically
- 12:36grow your business by delivering a kick ass customer experience, that's going to get
- 12:39people talking about you, keeping them loyal, building a fence around them, essentially
- 12:44just rupt proofing your business.
- 12:46Yeah.
- 12:47There you go.
- 12:48There you go.
- 12:49And it's so true.
- 12:50I mean, again, I'm repeating what almost anybody would probably say about this who's
- 12:52been in the industry for a period of time is that, you know, serving and taking care
- 12:55of your past clients is a significantly easier sale than taking on someone you that doesn't
- 13:00know you.
- 13:01It's each, you know, whenever someone calls, like, hey, Alex, I need help with this.
- 13:04Like, can you do it or can you not?
- 13:05It's not like, hey, you know, I want to go check out this lender, this lender, this
- 13:09lender, this lender.
- 13:10It's like, Alex, you do it for me, as opposed to them, you know, hustling around.
- 13:13And then it's just a batter of taking care of them again.
- 13:15And that's easy.
- 13:16What's an insight into maybe one area you've highlighted as a process that you're definitely
- 13:21going to improve on?
- 13:22What are we going to improve on?
- 13:23So we believe that whatever highlights is customer communication, so client communication
- 13:27and what's going on here, what's going on there, how's that happening, what's happening,
- 13:30the different ways that we do it through videos, through text, through email, we want to
- 13:33just get better at that consistently.
- 13:35So we're going to focus on our strengths and we're going to continue to operate in those
- 13:40parameters.
- 13:41Once we've hammered our strengths down and we feel super confident, then we'll start
- 13:44to work on our maybe something that's not quite as strong that we can pick up a little
- 13:48bit.
- 13:49But I truly just believe that, and this has been, you know, how I built my business so
- 13:51fast is I try not to worry too much about what I'm really not that good at.
- 13:54I mean, obviously, I'll be aware of it, you have to be aware, but I try to focus on what
- 13:58I'm best at.
- 13:59So I say to people like, hey, listen, if you, if you are just terrible face to face with
- 14:03people and, you know, you just awkward and you're not good at it, then don't go networking,
- 14:07don't go to networking events, don't do that kind of stuff like who cares?
- 14:09Get on the phone and dial, dial on the phone and just get better than anybody else on the
- 14:13phone.
- 14:14If you're great when it comes to, you know, like do a social media, then then brush
- 14:17social media better than anybody else out there and just be so good at it and get, get
- 14:20the best, because it's only if you're at the top and if you're, you're one of the best
- 14:24people, will you actually stand out in that sea of hundreds of thousands of other people,
- 14:28right?
- 14:29So focus, focus on your strengths, which is actually something that I was counter to
- 14:32to what I used to believe.
- 14:33I used to believe, okay, I'm not very good here.
- 14:35I should probably get better there because it's always like a carrot, like I'm not
- 14:38very good at that.
- 14:39Maybe I should do that too.
- 14:40We're always kind of trying to reach out to that.
- 14:42The reality is let's just get really, really freaking good at what we're good at and be
- 14:45the best.
- 14:46Otherwise, why the heck is someone calling?
- 14:48Like why?
- 14:49Why should they call you really at the end of the day?
- 14:51Like again, it's not, you know, something that anyone here has in store, the thing is
- 14:55this pocket hasn't, hasn't heard before, but let's just be better.
- 14:59Put more energy.
- 15:00Put more time.
- 15:01I bet anybody listening to this right now can look at what they're doing and they, what
- 15:05they think they're good at and realize that if they just put a little bit more time
- 15:08energy or thought into that, they can do better, which would result in a better experience
- 15:11for their clients, a better reason for their partners to reach out to them and they would
- 15:14feel damn good about it, even if it, if it costs a little energy.
- 15:16Yeah.
- 15:17100%.
- 15:18It's kind of like that 1% improvement concept.
- 15:19If you go with the exact math is on that, if you get, if you get like 1% better every
- 15:23month or something, you're, it's a 37% improvement at the end of the year.
- 15:26Okay.
- 15:27So, let me ask you this then, what are, what do you consider yourself?
- 15:30Let me take part one and then part two first, part one.
- 15:33What did you identify that you perhaps weren't great at and you needed to outsource that
- 15:37or delegate it?
- 15:38Technical side of the process, I understood it, but I wasn't good at doing it.
- 15:42I don't have a long enough attention span to, I mean, I had to learn it, right, let's
- 15:47say the underwriting aspect.
- 15:48I know the process is a little bit different up here than it is in the U.S. like I don't
- 15:52have a underwriting or processing center or anything like we do with everything, start
- 15:55to finish.
- 15:56So, I learned how to do it all.
- 15:58I understood it and I learned it better than anybody else, but I wasn't really great
- 16:02at it.
- 16:03I didn't enjoy it.
- 16:04I didn't like all the detail.
- 16:05I'm not being back for it from that.
- 16:06Just on what I'm best at, which is of course, my experiences is advising when it comes
- 16:09to clients is like having those communications, uncovering opportunities, that's what I'm
- 16:13good at.
- 16:14In addition to that is I love marketing, I love building relationships, I love doing
- 16:19videos, I like doing all that kind of stuff, so it shows in what I do because I enjoy
- 16:23it.
- 16:24So, I got better at that.
- 16:25Yeah, and that's a nice transition into what you are great at, which is what kind of
- 16:28brought us here together and you're kind of what's put you on the map for a lot of people
- 16:31is you're branding, you're marketing, you know, the mortgage pug, which is kind of
- 16:35taken on.
- 16:36So let me ask you this.
- 16:37Did you think that you know or did you think that the whole mortgage pug thing would become
- 16:41what it is today?
- 16:42No.
- 16:43No.
- 16:44So give us a little backstory.
- 16:45For those that don't know, you'll see links in the show and I'll put images on the
- 16:48blog page and all that kind of stuff to add to his website and all that stuff.
- 16:51But how did that whole thing with the dog start?
- 16:54He was already my dog, already a big part of my life.
- 16:56It sounds so corny, but like he was like the resident dog that whenever any of my buddies
- 17:01they talked about me instead of asking like, how are you doing?
- 17:04How's your wife doing?
- 17:05It's like, well, the original dog, his name is Ernie.
- 17:08Well, time out, time out.
- 17:09What do you mean original?
- 17:11So we got number two.
- 17:12We got number two.
- 17:13We got number two.
- 17:14We got two now.
- 17:15We got two together.
- 17:16Yeah, we got two.
- 17:17They're both still around.
- 17:18Oh, yeah, they're both alive.
- 17:19We got a succession plan in place.
- 17:20Oh, good.
- 17:21Yeah, it wouldn't be like, hey, how are you doing it?
- 17:23It's like, how's Ernie?
- 17:24How's Ernie?
- 17:25Where's Ernie?
- 17:26What's he doing?
- 17:27Why isn't he here with us?
- 17:28He's one of those creatures that he's got such a ridiculous personality and at the time
- 17:32that I got him, I think pubs are kind of more of a fad now, but when I got him, it wasn't
- 17:36so much yet.
- 17:37So it was kind of like this weird creature that no one could figure out that snorted around
- 17:40and this is kind of, you know, in your grill.
- 17:42So anyways, long story short, people would always remember me for that anyways.
- 17:45And then, you know, again, sorry, into 2015 about nine months in, and I was like, I got
- 17:49to rebrand myself.
- 17:50I got to stem out what I got to do, something different.
- 17:53And my wife said, why don't you use, should be saying it for months, why don't you just
- 17:56use the dog, be a pug, pug mortgages or something, she would sail at the time when I was
- 18:00like, that's terrible.
- 18:01Like, nobody's going to take a piece of it.
- 18:03I'd walk in, you know, and I got a client who's nine million dollar property and they're
- 18:07going to look at me and be like, it's been a mortgage from this pug guy.
- 18:10No, no.
- 18:11And she's like, oh, care is like, she didn't really, you know, know her much.
- 18:14Just do it, just do it.
- 18:15I think no chance.
- 18:16So anyways, flashback, one of my co-brokers or someone in my company went and got a picture
- 18:20of my dog, sent it to the marketing person for the company, came back, had this post said
- 18:24something like mortgage pugger, hashtag mortgage pug on it.
- 18:28And she's like, I want you to post this stuff on your Facebook wall.
- 18:30Go post it now.
- 18:31See what happens.
- 18:32So I was like, no.
- 18:33Okay, fine.
- 18:34So I went did it.
- 18:35And it was just, it like, I would say viral per se, but it was, it was a hit.
- 18:39Everybody liked it.
- 18:40I really loved it.
- 18:41They're like, oh, this is great.
- 18:42I love your brand.
- 18:43That love what's going on.
- 18:44You know, it's so cool.
- 18:45And so anyways, yeah, just sold me on it.
- 18:46I was like, let's go.
- 18:47Let's do it.
- 18:48What do I got to lose?
- 18:49I mean, at the time, obviously, I wasn't doing it out of business and I was looking
- 18:50for something unique.
- 18:51And I'm like, you know what?
- 18:52If that many people like it, then maybe that can focus on this younger crowd that gets
- 18:55it, right?
- 18:56And so, so yeah, that's kind of where it started off and then it kind of took a
- 18:59mind of its own.
- 19:00And we didn't really know what to make of it.
- 19:01I went and got a logo made and some other stuff.
- 19:04And, you know, really, it just kind of started up as using him and my images.
- 19:07So having that, trying to focus on what we're trying to create, which is a little bit
- 19:10more of a fun environment.
- 19:11Marge just don't have to be scary and boring and dry like a bank.
- 19:15Let's have some fun with it.
- 19:16We've got this goofy little animal here who just focuses on being around people.
- 19:20Let's have some fun, right?
- 19:21Let's have some humility.
- 19:23We can take it serious.
- 19:24That's what I'm here for.
- 19:25The dog is meant to distract you in the meantime.
- 19:27That's really good stuff.
- 19:28There's a lot in there because you, you, you, you, you did have some, some reservations
- 19:31about it, right?
- 19:32Which is understandable.
- 19:33I think anybody would because you were like anybody when they're talking about, you know,
- 19:36having a brand and standing for something, then there's a concern, well, what are other
- 19:39people going to think?
- 19:40They're going to quote judge me, you know, but good news is you got through that really
- 19:43fast.
- 19:44Do you tend to them?
- 19:45Is your, is your target market, you know, of the younger market?
- 19:48Yeah, that's a great question.
- 19:49You know, initially when I started getting into it, my primary focus was first time buyers
- 19:53and move up buyers.
- 19:54So young families, that was a lot of what I was targeting at that time.
- 19:58And so yeah, it definitely helped because no, having the dog there, a lot of people, you
- 20:02were, were into it.
- 20:03I always tell people, I'm like, listen, are there people who loved it?
- 20:06Yes, where are the people who didn't like it?
- 20:07I had people who didn't want to work with me because of the cool thing about that is
- 20:10that eliminated people that I don't want to work with anyways because they've fun attitude.
- 20:15They're going to be stressful and frustrating and it's like good, good, good riddance.
- 20:18And I hope you have success wherever you just are going, right?
- 20:21And so yes, there was, there was some controversy, there was a lot of questions.
- 20:24I had some trepidation, it took me a little while before I fully, fully went into it.
- 20:29And then you know what?
- 20:30I just dove right in.
- 20:31Is there's no point of doing something unless you're going 100% all in.
- 20:34So everything from, you know, posting videos.
- 20:37So I post, you know, when I started, it was like a back in, you know, 2015, 2016, I started
- 20:41posting monthly videos, just educating people because I primarily just wanted to focus
- 20:45on a couple things.
- 20:46One, you know, the first time buyers and move up buyers and what did I know about them is
- 20:48that the information is difficult, confusing to understand and take in and nobody is out
- 20:53there really explaining it in a way which is easy to understand.
- 20:56In addition, I had a lot to learn.
- 20:58So I learned it.
- 20:59Then I put it up to the public and I just had a video with me in my pub.
- 21:02So that was how we started.
- 21:04So and like I said, for those listening, you have to go over to the blog page or check
- 21:08the show notes for it for we've got links to like all your videos because you've got
- 21:12quite a library.
- 21:13You've got a YouTube channel that's just, it's rock and man, I love that.
- 21:16It's stacked up with, like you said, I think you started with videos like 2015.
- 21:18Right?
- 21:19Yeah.
- 21:20Yeah.
- 21:21So if you go back and whatever, you know, we, this is a hot topic right now, the video
- 21:24thing.
- 21:25You know, I've been obviously hitting this for a few years and it's a hot topic.
- 21:26But if you go back and watch my first videos, man, they were bad.
- 21:29Like I looked awkward, uncomfortable, not sure myself.
- 21:32Welcome to the club, man.
- 21:34Right?
- 21:35So yeah.
- 21:36Yeah.
- 21:37So that was, I mean, just like anybody else, it was, it was the way it is.
- 21:41But we just, we started looking at that and saying it's working because I kept learning
- 21:44more and more.
- 21:45I kept educating more and more and then I became, you know, like, you know, people would
- 21:48look for my information or really, like, realtor's, hey, you put another video on this
- 21:51or you put another video on this, clients would, my past clients would be like, are you
- 21:53putting out a video on the change of the rate?
- 21:55So you put, you know, whenever there's any major events, yeah, yeah, of course it's coming
- 21:58to your inbox.
- 21:59So now I have to do it.
- 22:00In addition, we just said, you know what?
- 22:01Let's do a video once a week and then any, any major event that occurs and that was
- 22:04kind of like through 2017 continued through 2018 and then we started adding in things like,
- 22:08you know, live videos, interviews, awesome for you to do this podcast.
- 22:11But if I had the capacity right now, I would be able to do it as well.
- 22:14And it's just about education and that's it.
- 22:17Right.
- 22:18Right.
- 22:19100% education.
- 22:20And it's interesting to hear the response from the audience, referral partners alike is
- 22:23that there's this expectation and dependency now they look forward to your content.
- 22:28Oh my God.
- 22:29That's the holy grail, you know.
- 22:30Oh, no question.
- 22:31They were like, you know, when is this video coming?
- 22:32Can you teach me how to do this?
- 22:33Can you do, you know, whatever I've done now, probably about 10 presentations.
- 22:37I'm actually speaking at the bomb bomb conference if anybody's going up in Colorado, which is
- 22:40going to be awesome.
- 22:41I don't even know how they invited me, but I'm excited to watch and listen to all the
- 22:45other folks who are doing video stuff.
- 22:47If you're not going, I think there's like 14 tickets left, whoever gets on board, you
- 22:50should be there.
- 22:51Oh wow.
- 22:52Any social media or video related in real estate or mortgages or insurance, that's where
- 22:55you need to be.
- 22:56Anyways, that was a good plug.
- 22:57No, that's a good reminder because I've had Steve Passenelli on the podcast and that's
- 23:00I think in May and Denver.
- 23:02Yes.
- 23:03Yeah, I'm going to put links to the show notes.
- 23:04We had another podcast where we talked about that as well.
- 23:06And I plan on being there.
- 23:07God willing.
- 23:08I'm going to after this.
- 23:09I'm going to go buy my ticket.
- 23:10So, all right.
- 23:11Cool.
- 23:12All right.
- 23:13Where's that going to go?
- 23:14I want to think about this.
- 23:15So you started with the dog, the pup.
- 23:16What are both of their names again?
- 23:17Ernie.
- 23:18Oh, Ernie and Jack's.
- 23:19Jack's with adopted.
- 23:20So we didn't have a choice in the name.
- 23:21So those were the two dogs.
- 23:22We built them into our brand.
- 23:23It just became our focus.
- 23:24And then everything that we do around that was built in.
- 23:26Okay.
- 23:27What makes people feel good?
- 23:28How do we make them feel good?
- 23:29I know there's some people who have some pretty cool processes and then we're learning
- 23:31from them and so forth.
- 23:32But it was just in our mind.
- 23:33It's just like, is this going to help people?
- 23:34Is this going to make them feel happy?
- 23:36You know, let's continue to.
- 23:37That's like our North Star that's guiding us all the time.
- 23:40Is that kind of humility and that fun, right?
- 23:42Yeah.
- 23:43Well, you've got a thousand followers on your Facebook page right now.
- 23:46Your YouTube channel.
- 23:47I mean, you're building an audience, right?
- 23:48And that's the key.
- 23:49And you're making it fun.
- 23:50Oh, I was going to go back to, for the younger people, they do find the information,
- 23:54you know, confusing and the home buying processes, challenging and all that kind of stuff.
- 23:58So you're definitely leading with education and content on that.
- 24:01I was going to ask you, can you do you have a sense?
- 24:04And this is, I hate the question right of like, hey, you're like the ROI tracking deals
- 24:08from social and all that stuff.
- 24:10But what have you noticed in terms of the, do you get organic business coming to you?
- 24:14100%.
- 24:15So, brand recognition.
- 24:16So I'm, I'm most active on Instagram, then Facebook.
- 24:19I post everything on YouTube, full disclosure.
- 24:22I haven't spent the time to build a subscriber list.
- 24:24It's kind of like my dictionary right now, or sorry, it's kind of where my library is.
- 24:28It's probably right now.
- 24:29That's the next, that's the next step right now is now that I've got all this content.
- 24:33Let's start mapping that up and getting people on there, which is what I'll be key on later this year.
- 24:37But with that being said, you know, specifically what is my ROI?
- 24:40Yeah, I'm sure I could look at people and say like they got me from Facebook or here or there or whatnot.
- 24:44But what I actually know that it helps me is my existing relationships become stronger,
- 24:48the people that connect with me.
- 24:49I try to connect with everybody on this screen or through my business page or whatever.
- 24:52And they just see my face consistently.
- 24:54And as they see my face over and over and over and over again, they're going to consistently think of me.
- 24:58And so what happens is it's a long game for me.
- 25:00Like I don't do online, I don't do online leads.
- 25:03I don't do anything like that.
- 25:04But I mean, it's the same effect as like going out consistently in public.
- 25:07If I'm consistently going to like a community event or a gym or something of that age or all the time,
- 25:12and I'm talking the same people eventually, they're going to be like, oh, Alex, we have to ask Alex about that, right?
- 25:16The same thing, but I'm just in front of that same group of people and more online,
- 25:20which is exactly where you want to be, you know, at the end of the day, where they are, be where they are.
- 25:24So yeah, I do.
- 25:25I probably get between three to five contacts a week through social media and some capacity Facebook Instagram linked in now.
- 25:33Well, the thing I want to point out about those contacts, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 25:36But I know this from interviewing other people that are on a similar path as you is there's like zero selling on those contacts.
- 25:41There's much reduced price sensitivity.
- 25:44And it's pretty much when they reach out to contact to you.
- 25:46That's like, I've been consuming your content.
- 25:48Hey, I'm ready to go.
- 25:5010% all the so I get agents who reach out to me all the time.
- 25:54They want to work with me.
- 25:55I mean, I probably get a new like I did just got off a call about an hour ago from a new referral from a new agent that I've never worked with before,
- 26:02because she's saw my stuff on a regular basis and she trusts that I'm an authority in the field, which is like, listen,
- 26:08there's no hiding anything here, guys.
- 26:10I'm not selling you on anything.
- 26:11Yes, I want you to use me for your services and I want to support you in your journey.
- 26:15But there's no selling like no selling like I don't have to go up to somebody and be like, hey, I want you to work with me.
- 26:19I just don't do that. I hate doing it.
- 26:21So it's just more or less like, hey, listen, this is the content.
- 26:23This is what I do. This is what I where our information is.
- 26:25If you like this, my only ask would be that you you talk to me when it comes time to to buy property or refinance or invest or something of that nature because I've given you that value up front.
- 26:33So if you could, you know, chat with me about it.
- 26:35If it's not the right fit, then I'll honor that and you go where you need to go.
- 26:37And that's it. No sales at all.
- 26:39So I noticed you'd also do if you have a regular scheduled Facebook live kind of program.
- 26:43So yes, I had a regular scheduled Facebook live from last June through December and my objective actually going into 2019 was to continue that and now I put up on the podcast.
- 26:53In lieu of doing that, I put my focus.
- 26:57I moved my focus a little bit just to start the year on my team because a big, big focus for me again as I discussed this year was to get back into focusing a little bit more down on our system process.
- 27:06We did let go of a member we brought two members in.
- 27:08So I had to focus on my primary objective so I continue to do my standard videos.
- 27:12I can continue to work on my team.
- 27:14We will be ramping back up and getting back into that as well as a podcast and a regular scheduled live going into the second half of 2019 this year.
- 27:21We're doing very, very well with what we have at the moment.
- 27:24So we're quite happy with the current results of the actions.
- 27:27And so at this point right now, that would be that would be like icing on the cake. That's the objective to get there.
- 27:32Yeah, that's awesome.
- 27:33Actually, I want to make a point because your question is probably pertain to what were the results and answer your question that was more about me.
- 27:38Maybe it wasn't, maybe it wasn't, but I want to talk about that.
- 27:41Yeah.
- 27:42If you are, so think about it this way.
- 27:44If you're, this is good for a local area.
- 27:46So if you are in a local area and you're in what city are you in?
- 27:49I'm in Vegas.
- 27:50Okay, so you're in Las Vegas.
- 27:52Then what I would recommend is if you were someone who wants to create an influence in that area,
- 27:57then what you would do is you would figure out what it is that people care about.
- 28:00There's two sides to that.
- 28:01One, figure out what people actually care about what they're looking to hear.
- 28:04But more importantly, to do the live interview with the people that you want to work with,
- 28:08that's really where you want to go with it.
- 28:10So figure out how you're giving them value.
- 28:11So listen, Mr. Life Insurance Agent or Realtor Financial Planner,
- 28:15wherever it is you work with or a business person.
- 28:17I want to give you a platform.
- 28:18I've got an audience of the X amount of people that are watching a consuming audience of regular day.
- 28:22Let's do a 30 minute show and I'm going to give value to all these other people.
- 28:27And I'm going to help you get your business out there in exchange for that.
- 28:31You don't ask for anything.
- 28:32You don't ask for nothing at all.
- 28:33And these people naturally, they're more likely to want to work with you.
- 28:36And in addition, you're creating value for them.
- 28:38Right.
- 28:39And you're connecting yourself with a lot of local influencers and that's got a whole ripple effect and all that stuff.
- 28:43Everybody sees you.
- 28:44Yeah, no doubt.
- 28:45Are you trying to become the digital mayor of your kind of town area?
- 28:48Yep.
- 28:49100%.
- 28:50That's the job of it.
- 28:51When I get the hell, man.
- 28:52From a distance.
- 28:53That's awesome.
- 28:54Okay.
- 28:55In the last few minutes we have, I also, so it's funny.
- 28:56You know what?
- 28:57So for those listening who are apprehensive about going all in like you have on a particular channel, a brand or whatever,
- 29:03give them a quick coaching session.
- 29:04Help them get over and understand.
- 29:06Let me, let me, let me have to this way.
- 29:07This is actually a better setup.
- 29:08I've talked to, I'm sure you've heard it.
- 29:10I've talked to a number of LOs.
- 29:11I'll give you a real life example.
- 29:12Somebody says to me the other day on a coaching call, well, I'm not on Facebook and I really don't plan to be.
- 29:17Or I've been in this business for 18 years and I've never needed social media.
- 29:20So tell me why I need social media.
- 29:22All right.
- 29:23Alex, you tell them.
- 29:24So here's the thing.
- 29:25On a coaching call, you might have a little more challenge.
- 29:27But I tell people don't do something that you're not going to do.
- 29:29If you're not going to do it, don't bother with it, right?
- 29:30But what I did say before, which is first thing that anyone does is when they get a referral,
- 29:34they got a recommendation is they're going to look you up either on Google or on Facebook.
- 29:37So you got to be somewhere.
- 29:38You got to be seen.
- 29:39You got to be visible.
- 29:40Listen.
- 29:41If I get a real estate agent's contact information, first thing I do with my client sends me their name,
- 29:45is I'll Google them up.
- 29:46And if I don't find them, I'm going to start asking some questions.
- 29:48And if I start asking questions, I'm looking for opportunities to refer to that client as somebody else.
- 29:52And not because I don't want to.
- 29:53Of course, I'm not going to try and take away a relationship or anything of that nature.
- 29:56But I'm going to wonder to myself, is this person a really full time?
- 29:58Do they really have a business?
- 29:59It's like having, you know, 20 years ago, 30 years ago, if your name was in the yellow pages,
- 30:03did you actually have a business?
- 30:04It was out of your garage, right?
- 30:05Could you be legitimate?
- 30:06You're not legitimate if you're not online.
- 30:08First of all, second of all, just pick one place, one place.
- 30:10I don't care what it is.
- 30:11Pick one and just do it really well.
- 30:13One.
- 30:14And in addition to that, whatever you're doing, make sure it's real to who you are.
- 30:18Don't try and be the mortgage pup.
- 30:19Don't try and be the mortgage goat.
- 30:20I don't know what it is.
- 30:21But just be you, man.
- 30:22Just be whatever you are.
- 30:23People who like you for the last 18 years, they're going to still like you as long as you're acting like who you are and yourself.
- 30:31It's just like anything else.
- 30:32It's a progression.
- 30:33You got better and better and better.
- 30:34The second thing I always say to anyone is that the social media stuff for me, like here's the thing.
- 30:38The social media stuff for me is really at the end of the day.
- 30:41It's a complementary.
- 30:42Okay?
- 30:43So you have to be damn good at what you do.
- 30:45You have to be focused on what you do and be the best at it and know that you work as far as you can.
- 30:50Otherwise, that's all fluff.
- 30:51Because I see guys come, like they're like, you know, mortgage people and all this kind of stuff, like coming up all these followers.
- 30:57Great.
- 30:58It's not doing anything because once you get the people or you're capped to the information, you're not doing anything with it.
- 31:03You're not doing a good job or you're not showing up.
- 31:06So you got to be really good at it.
- 31:07It's kind of like having like big muscles or steroids.
- 31:10It's like what you can't push the weight.
- 31:12So what's the purpose?
- 31:13You know what I mean?
- 31:14So that's one of the big things I say to people is get really good at what you do.
- 31:17Have your process figured out or at least focus on that one thing and then start hitting your social media with that one thing.
- 31:23Make sure that everything that you do provides some form of value.
- 31:26I don't want to hear you selling.
- 31:27Like don't sell it.
- 31:28You know, just like that.
- 31:29If people don't, if you don't open the first, say 10 seconds of a video, if you don't capture their attention in a way that's interesting to them and helps them.
- 31:35And they don't want anything to do with you and they'll probably too know for the rest of your videos.
- 31:38One bad video is equal to everything else or one bad piece of content.
- 31:41How do you get good?
- 31:42How do you flex your social media muscles?
- 31:44How do you stay sharp, stay, you know, in tune to, you know, be a sort of content marketer?
- 31:49The people that are listening to this right now are trying to get better at their business.
- 31:52They care.
- 31:53So they're going to get better no matter what, whether it's for me or someone else.
- 31:56But they're spending the time and the energy to listen to something which might benefit their business.
- 31:59So they're already a step ahead as far as that's concerned.
- 32:01It's the same thing in any part of your life or business.
- 32:03So what you want to do is you want to focus on listening to podcasts, reading information.
- 32:07There's so much out there.
- 32:08It's insane.
- 32:09Like go look at, you know, all a podcast social social media marketing world or something like that I think was called.
- 32:14And he's got so much content out the yin yang.
- 32:17And it's just listen to half of it and implement a little piece.
- 32:20That's a good way to start.
- 32:21But you better get better.
- 32:22No, 100%.
- 32:23Actually, I just got back from that conference.
- 32:24It's one of the best ones I think I've ever been to.
- 32:26I wanted to go to that.
- 32:27I wanted to go to that.
- 32:28The other thing I would say is just like anything else, man, you just have to keep doing it.
- 32:31You have to keep practicing.
- 32:32Like I, like I said to people, I strike out all the time.
- 32:35Like all the time on so much stuff.
- 32:38But I'm just constantly trying and trying and trying new things.
- 32:41Like I got videos that I spent so much time on and I'm like, oh man, like five people watch that.
- 32:45What the heck?
- 32:46And then I'll have like this silly post of me in my dog or something.
- 32:49And it'll be all over the place.
- 32:51It's like, ah, what are the people want?
- 32:53But stay in tune with what people want and just stay focused on doing the task.
- 32:58Like keep doing it.
- 32:59Keep doing it.
- 33:00Keep doing it.
- 33:01Because if you're just giving up because someone didn't pick it up, then you're obviously not ready to move forward.
- 33:06And you said something earlier as well as you're in it for the long game.
- 33:08And that is this game, right?
- 33:10Creating a brand, building an engagement in an audience of trusting people following you on social media.
- 33:15That doesn't happen overnight.
- 33:16It takes time, man.
- 33:17So we started this episode of that.
- 33:19I'm taking over your job for a second.
- 33:20I was kind of this episode talking about mindset.
- 33:22Yeah.
- 33:23And I tell people that when people ask me like, what's, you know, what might make you successful?
- 33:26It's because of real tears.
- 33:27It's because of social media.
- 33:28Like, none of that stuff, man.
- 33:29It's because in my mind, I know that what at that point, where I know that it's so hard,
- 33:34and I'm like, I want to give up or this is, you know, for the last six weeks,
- 33:38I've been working like 12, 15 hour days.
- 33:40And I'm like four years into my career because of various different things.
- 33:44And I know that I could have give up at 10 hours or eight hours or six hours every day.
- 33:47But I keep hustling and pushing and pushing and pushing and pushing to be better.
- 33:50And then I rise to come to the crop list.
- 33:51I'm the guy to call.
- 33:52I get the, you know, the file is complete.
- 33:54Now I'm back at a point where I can come back down to earth because I put in the work and I put in the time.
- 33:58So your mind will generally tell you to stop doing something.
- 34:00It's scary to do the, you know, the video was scary to go talk to someone.
- 34:03It's scary to screw up a file.
- 34:05It's scary to get a crappy phone call or call a client and say, hey, listen,
- 34:08like this, this didn't work out and it's my fault.
- 34:10Like, you know, do those things.
- 34:12But, you know, at the end of the day, the only way you can do that is if you focus on keeping your mind focused on the task at hand.
- 34:18And what you're trying to achieve, what your goals are.
- 34:20I'm going on a little bit of a tangent.
- 34:21So I'll kind of slow it down here a little bit.
- 34:23It doesn't have to be overly complicated.
- 34:25Understand what you're trying to achieve, how you're going to get there.
- 34:28And just keep trying, keep pushing.
- 34:30When it gets hard, that means you've got to keep going.
- 34:32You can't stop at that point.
- 34:33It's the point when it gets hard is which is basically your body's telling you stop.
- 34:37That's the point you have to go further.
- 34:39That's why they have those crazy marathon runners.
- 34:41And there's only one out of a million people who can do it.
- 34:43Because those guys turn that part of their brain off and just keep rocking.
- 34:46That's what it takes to be successful in anything.
- 34:49Yeah. And before we close that, I also want to make the point is that you're still active in your local market.
- 34:53I notice you do like first time home buyer seminars.
- 34:55What do you call that here?
- 34:56Here's in home buying. What do you call that?
- 34:57We do beers in home buying.
- 34:58Yeah.
- 34:59We do that usually three, four times a year.
- 35:01I do a couple of other seminars.
- 35:03Very active.
- 35:04Yeah, I sit down.
- 35:05And you know, I've heard people talk about is it worth sitting down with a new agent or more experienced agent or anything?
- 35:10I'm not too big for anything.
- 35:12Like I said, down with the guy yesterday, it started three weeks ago.
- 35:14I'm like, great, let's sit down.
- 35:15Let me help you out.
- 35:16Let me put you in the right path and help you out.
- 35:18And I think as soon as you think again, you're too big for a $50,000 loan versus a $800,000 loan, then you've got problems.
- 35:26Interesting. Good.
- 35:27And that all comes back to mindset.
- 35:28You're in it for the long term.
- 35:29And like you said earlier, you love helping people.
- 35:31It's helping families.
- 35:32It's not doing units.
- 35:33And you know, you're making a positive difference.
- 35:35And I bet you believe as well.
- 35:36And I totally understand and get that you don't like the mechanics, let's say, of doing loans.
- 35:41But I'm going to venture to guess you believe that your advice makes a difference in somebody's life.
- 35:45Oh, 100%.
- 35:46Yeah.
- 35:47100%.
- 35:48Yeah, I know the mechanics don't get me wrong.
- 35:49Like I understand what's happening, but I just don't enjoy doing it all.
- 35:52Exactly.
- 35:53Yeah, exactly.
- 35:54Know your land, stay in your lane.
- 35:55That's awesome.
- 35:56All right.
- 35:57Well, listen, we're going to put links in the show notes.
