- 0:27Hey there coaches. This is Rob Wilson coming at you
- 0:32through the Gill Athletics podcast.
- 0:36First and foremost, Full disclosure, I'm not a track and
- 0:40field coach. I've never worked in track and
- 0:43field. I don't coach the events.
- 0:45I've never participated in the events.
- 0:48And so you might ask yourselves, now that you have that
- 0:51knowledge, what the heck is this guy doing on this track and
- 0:56field podcast? Well, I'll tell you.
- 0:58I hope to offer some more general information based on my
- 1:03experience, which primarily in the last three years especially
- 1:08has been with the special operations community.
- 1:12But I do have a bit of a tendril or two into track and field
- 1:17through Altis. So I've done various types of
- 1:20work with Altis, who I'm sure many of you are familiar with
- 1:23listening to this podcast. This CEO, Stu McMillan, has been
- 1:28on Gill Athletics more than once, I'm sure.
- 1:32And so I work with Stu and the coaches at Altus quite often
- 1:36actually. Now what I want to offer today
- 1:40is a bit more general in scope. And I think one thing that I can
- 1:46help with in particular is to provide or at least to help
- 1:50coaches deliver in simpler language, the knowledge that you
- 1:57have on how systems and processes work together in the
- 2:03performance environment and how to sort of sell the need for
- 2:08high performers to develop a self monitoring and self-care
- 2:12system to sustain performance. Now let me be more specific.
- 2:17I think at least for me, the target in the way that I work is
- 2:25performance longevity. So of course we want to win in
- 2:29the short term, but I think more broadly what I would like to aim
- 2:34for his performance longevity. Now performance doesn't just
- 2:37mean winning because a lot of factors contribute to whether or
- 2:41not an athlete wins. An athlete could have maybe
- 2:43their best performance ever and still lose.
- 2:47So performance means can I execute to my potential on the
- 2:53given day, right. Performance is about execution.
- 2:56Can I do the things that I want to do and do the things that I
- 2:59need to be able to do? And then there's longevity,
- 3:01which is length over time, right?
- 3:04Can I, can I maintain that set of capacities that allow me to
- 3:10continue to perform not just for a day, not just for a week, but
- 3:16for months and years? So what are the things that we
- 3:21need to have in order to not just have short term
- 3:25performance, but be able to sustain performance?
- 3:29And I'm sure all of you have seen situations where very
- 3:33gifted elite performers can't sustain the performance because
- 3:38they don't have the skills and habits that are necessary to
- 3:44keep them in the game. Now high performers are often
- 3:50good because at least in part because they can figure it out,
- 3:58at least in the moment, any unimportant information that
- 4:03that interferes with them getting the job done from
- 4:06performing the task. High performing individuals are
- 4:11very good at task focus. They can drive all of their
- 4:17intention to what needs to be done right now and to execute in
- 4:23that in the sporting event and often in training is very, very
- 4:27helpful. All right, and to some degree
- 4:30necessary. However, because athletes are so
- 4:37good at doing that, one of the things that happens is that that
- 4:40the price they pay is that they miss small sort of indicator
- 4:46lights that say, hey, you'd better look over here and start
- 4:51dealing with this small set of problems before they become
- 4:57bigger problems. And that's where the idea of the
- 5:02check engine light came from, right?
- 5:04This check engine light curriculum and and now a book
- 5:07that I've written by the same title is about knowing where the
- 5:12indicator lights are on the performance longevity dashboard
- 5:17of the athlete. Now, some of these ideas are
- 5:20tacit to coaches, right? We have all kinds of monitoring
- 5:24systems and assessments and data collection that we use all the
- 5:29time. And we're through our training
- 5:32and through our experience in the profession, we get really
- 5:37attuned to this information. But athletes are more focused on
- 5:42outcomes. What can they do?
- 5:44How are they performing now? They don't need to be as read in
- 5:49on monitoring systems and assessments as we are, but if
- 5:53they don't have any system to monitor these things of
- 5:58themselves, then we're always going to be in a lag.
- 6:02We're always going to be behind the 8 ball.
- 6:05And so instead of that, what we can do is build a dashboard.
- 6:10And this dashboard can have valid, reliable and accessible
- 6:14indicators with the purpose of calibrating their perception to
- 6:20improve their embodied sense of what it is they need at any
- 6:25given period of time. And there's really two benefits
- 6:28to that. One is athletes can make
- 6:31adjustments faster than we can make adjustments for them
- 6:35because they're living in their experience.
- 6:38So if they're educated about what kind of indicators they
- 6:43should have and what those things mean about their ability
- 6:46to perform, then they can make adjustments in real time much
- 6:50faster than any best coach in the world because they're living
- 6:54it. Second, if they run into
- 6:58problems that they are unsure how to solve when they talk to
- 7:02subject matter experts like coaches or people on the medical
- 7:05staff, they're going to have better language and a better a
- 7:11more calibrated sense of what they need so that they can
- 7:15communicate more clearly to people on their team.
- 7:19And again, that puts us in a more adaptive framework when it
- 7:25comes to solving performance problems instead of waiting for
- 7:28things to get so bad that they finally notice and then doing
- 7:34something having some sort of system failure, right?
- 7:38That would be like, well, that'd be like only changing the oil in
- 7:45your truck because the engine finally seized, right?
- 7:50That's why we have indicators on our actual dashboards in our
- 7:53vehicles to let us know what is the condition of the system
- 7:57currently, how are things running and what might need
- 8:01attention in the near future to keep it running.
- 8:06And that's really the purpose of the dashboard or the instrument
- 8:09panel, instrument cluster, however you want to think about
- 8:12it in any vehicle that you ever operate.
- 8:15Now, we don't want to just put anything on this dashboard.
- 8:17We want to have valid, reliable and accessible indicators.
- 8:21So valid means this indicator actually measures.
- 8:25The thing I think it measures is accurate.
- 8:28It's an accurate report of what's happening.
- 8:31So for example, if you have a chest strap heart rate monitor
- 8:36that's a valid indicator of the behavior of your heart during
- 8:41training. Then we have reliability where
- 8:44we want indicators that are reliable, they measure in
- 8:47consistent ways over time. And then we want accessible
- 8:52indicators, which means, well, I have it first of all, but also,
- 8:56and to me, this is where the rubber meets the road and
- 8:59performance. Does the athlete know what the
- 9:03information that they're getting means and what action to take?
- 9:10So one of the sort of bugaboos that I have in the performance
- 9:13industry in general is the way things like heart rate
- 9:17variability are used now. We have more wearable data than
- 9:21ever, more access to digital tools.
- 9:25Athletes are testing themselves, coaches are testing them, and we
- 9:30have all this data, for example, heart rate variability, and the
- 9:35athletes don't really know how to properly interpret the
- 9:39information and inform action. So often one of two things in my
- 9:45experience happens 1. The athletes don't know what it
- 9:48means, it doesn't reflect their experience and so they get rid
- 9:52of it. They just disregard it all
- 9:54together or they become so fixated on it that it becomes a
- 10:00limiter and their ability to express themselves properly
- 10:05during training, they become sort of neurotic about changes
- 10:09in in HIV. And so accessibility is not only
- 10:14OK, I have this convenient technological tool, but it's
- 10:17also I understand how to interpret the information and
- 10:21how to make sense out of it. So I know what action to take or
- 10:26better yet, what next experiment to do to get newer information.
- 10:33Now in terms of the application of this, I like to think about
- 10:39these indicators on this dashboard in three categories.
- 10:43So I think about it in terms of mind movement and matter and
- 10:48mind really, you know, it could mean a lot of things.
- 10:50I don't want to get too philosophically esoteric here,
- 10:53but mine for all intents and purposes has to do with the way
- 10:59that we respond to stress over time.
- 11:02So how does the psycho emotional physiological system respond to
- 11:09all stress from all directions over time, including not just
- 11:15training stress, but also things like familial stress, social
- 11:20environment, history of stress which may include things like
- 11:25trauma. And that all those things have
- 11:26to be considered when thinking about how an athlete might
- 11:31monitor their current and future response to different types of
- 11:36stress. Then we have movement, which is
- 11:38pretty obvious, right? If you're a, if you're a SNC or
- 11:42you're a track and field coach, movements pretty obvious.
- 11:46How well do you move your body in space and time and what
- 11:50markers are available to standardize those things?
- 11:57Now, if you're a coach, that in particular is tacit to your
- 12:02approach. That's what we learn as coaches,
- 12:04right? You're using movement screens
- 12:07and you're watching how athletes warm ups and their responses to
- 12:10warm ups and training loads changes over time and how
- 12:14coordinated are they? How much power do they produce?
- 12:19What's the rate of force development?
- 12:21All those kind of metrics that let us know how an athlete is
- 12:25moving. Now the third category is, and
- 12:28actually let me back up for a second here, I almost passed
- 12:31this important point, which is in this movement category, often
- 12:34what happens is because in general, human beings were so
- 12:38good at self organizing around problems that we're facing and
- 12:42athletes in particular are especially good at compensating
- 12:47and self organizing our own problems that they won't realize
- 12:51that their trajectory is headed towards somewhere that might
- 12:56ultimately limit them in the long run.
- 12:58It's helping with performance today, but it might be limiting
- 13:01performance in the future. And so it can be helpful for
- 13:05athletes to have some movement monitoring systems or frameworks
- 13:11that makes sense to them. So for for me, for example,
- 13:15regardless of sport, every athlete that I've worked with
- 13:17for sure over the last 10 years at some point has been asked to
- 13:23do sun salutation from yoga as a daily process.
- 13:26Not because I need everybody to levitate on Lotus blossoms and
- 13:32achieve Nirvana, but because I want athletes to see that
- 13:37there's some low friction formal movement patterns that they can
- 13:42do on a regular basis that give them information about how well
- 13:47their body's moving through space.
- 13:49Can they connect to simple shapes on a regular basis?
- 13:53Can they breathe in those shapes?
- 13:55So how's their nervous system responding even further?
- 13:58You can say, OK, well, if I do this thing every day that only
- 14:01takes 5 minutes, I, I'm really, I feel like annoyed that I have
- 14:06to do it today and I wake you up and I'm kind of grumpy about it
- 14:09and I don't want to do it and it's stupid.
- 14:11That first thing is a clue. Hey, hold on a second.
- 14:15Why mine in such a bad mood? I did this for the last two days
- 14:18and it wasn't a problem today. I'm kind of kind of mad about
- 14:21it. What's going on with me?
- 14:22All right, so it starts to give them some insight.
- 14:26It puts them ahead of the curve so they can start to make
- 14:28adjustments early. So we have mind, we have
- 14:32movement, and then third, we have matter.
- 14:35And matter is about chemistry. What's going on under the hood?
- 14:38Do they understand what's going on with their blood work, their
- 14:43aerobic system, how to manage their sleep and the effects of
- 14:46managing the sleep? Do they understand the
- 14:50appropriate body composition for their sport and how their
- 14:53behavior effects things like that?
- 14:57Energy systems, again, there's far more to all this then we
- 15:03have time for in this podcast, but things that I go into in a
- 15:07quite detailed fashion in my work elsewhere.
- 15:10But point being that this mind movement matter sort of trifecta
- 15:15is just a verbal description, right?
- 15:17These things are all related to each other.
- 15:19Anything that you do in one category affects the other two.
- 15:22If you change something and in the way that you respond and
- 15:26recover from stress, then it's going to change potentially how
- 15:29your body feels and it's going to change your chemistry.
- 15:31And if you pull on a lever and your chemistry, it's certainly
- 15:34going to affect the way that you deal with stress and how well
- 15:37you can move. And they're all affecting each
- 15:39other all the time. But mind movement and matter
- 15:43essentially represent categories from which we can draw valid,
- 15:49reliable, accessible indicators to build a dashboard.
- 15:53And the point of the dashboard is so that athletes can become
- 15:58autonomous partners, collaborators in managing their
- 16:03own performance longevity, so they can become more educated
- 16:08about their own needs and either better handle them themselves or
- 16:13communicate more clearly with professionals who are helping
- 16:17them. Now, over time, this becomes
- 16:23this idea of tuning, and tuning is really oppositional to
- 16:28optimization. Optimization means there is a
- 16:32single solution that's best. And if you're not in this best
- 16:37category of optimization, then you're less than optimal, you're
- 16:41less than your best. But that's really sort of like a
- 16:44manufacturing model from the 20th century.
- 16:47We're biological organisms, We're not things, we're not
- 16:50machines, even though we use the analogy of machines like I do,
- 16:53right, check engine light. We're ultimately biological
- 16:57organisms. And so the way that we're
- 16:59changing and adapting and what our needs are in order to get
- 17:03the stain the same stable outcomes over time, it will
- 17:07change. And so as you develop these
- 17:10indicators and you continue to use them, what will happen is
- 17:14you will better attune to the changing needs that you have in
- 17:20order to get stable outcomes. And this is done with an
- 17:27experimental mindset, right? And we can use things like Dave
- 17:31Snowden's safe to fail experiments.
- 17:33Let me try something. Oh, you know what?
- 17:35I think I've been monitoring my sleep and I think the quality of
- 17:40my sleep might be inhibiting my ability to recover the best I
- 17:45can from the heaviest workload on the most dense training day.
- 17:50I'm going to try something simple and if it if it works,
- 17:54it'll really help. But if it doesn't, it won't hurt
- 17:57me. That's a safe to fail
- 17:59experiment. And I'm going to have some key
- 18:01performance indicators that I looked at and we're going to
- 18:03have discussions about those things, right.
- 18:06And that's probably, if your coach listening to me say this,
- 18:08you probably like, Oh yeah, this is probably kind of how I'm
- 18:12already interacting with my athletes.
- 18:14And that's a good thing. What Check Engine Light does is
- 18:17it gives some simple language to explain the tacit knowledge that
- 18:23we often have as coaches to our athletes so they can better
- 18:27participate in the process. Now, all of this is really part
- 18:34of a larger coaching philosophy that I've been using for many
- 18:39years and again most recently with a special operations
- 18:42community that's recently culminated in a book called
- 18:46Check Engine Light Tuning Your Body and Mine for Performance
- 18:51Longevity. In it, I explain all the
- 18:53concepts that I just talked about in much greater detail.
- 18:56And there's a workbook where there are short, safe to fail
- 19:01experiments in the back where you or your athletes can try
- 19:05things out and see what works. Not for the purpose, just of
- 19:10getting some experimental outcome, but for asking better
- 19:14questions. That's really the key.
- 19:16Does the athlete have the capacity to ask better and
