Latest / SECOND CLOCK™ / SEASON 6 | EMOTIONALLY UNAVAILABLE // REVISITED

- 0:01I've heard it said that people can change, but only if they
- 0:04want to. So what would it take for you to
- 0:07try it? Change the way you think, feel,
- 0:10relate and experience situations.
- 0:13For me, I wanted to find the truth and little by little I did
- 0:17become different and old conditionings gone.
- 0:22Then I set a new course. I refer to that as the second
- 0:26clock. Join me, click follow, like and
- 0:29subscribe and let's see where this leads.
- 0:33Emotionally unavailable. Oh my goodness, another one of
- 0:37these buzzwords. But I think it explains it best.
- 0:41Somebody that is not available emotionally.
- 0:45And The funny thing about this is it's not just one type of
- 0:47person that is emotionally unavailable, like a psychopath
- 0:53or somebody that's void of being able to be vulnerable.
- 0:56It can be anyone, even somebody that does access their feelings
- 1:00deeply but just is not at a place in their life where they
- 1:04can be there for somebody. Now, I say this from experience.
- 1:08I have been emotionally unavailable.
- 1:10I was called out by a guy once. He said I'm offering you exactly
- 1:14what you say you want, but in actuality what you've been doing
- 1:19recently doesn't support what you say you want.
- 1:22Maybe you're just looking for casual because all the people
- 1:25you seem to get involved with are emotionally unavailable,
- 1:29which leads me to believe that you are too.
- 1:33When he first told me that, I thought, Nope, you're wrong, not
- 1:36this girl. I've read what emotionally
- 1:39unavailable people are like. They can't express themselves.
- 1:43They can't let people in. I can do all those things.
- 1:47But then I dug a little deeper and I realized maybe.
- 1:51And then yes, it's true, but it wasn't going to be true forever.
- 1:57It was a situational thing, a moment in time where I needed to
- 2:02figure things out at my pace, and it didn't matter who was in
- 2:06front of me and what opportunities they were
- 2:08presenting. My mindset wasn't there and I
- 2:12wasn't receptive or open to any of it.
- 2:16So you might be wondering why I'm talking about this, given
- 2:19that this season is not about dating.
- 2:21But I do talk a lot about awareness, and I think knowing
- 2:25if you are emotionally available or dating someone that is not
- 2:29emotionally available is important.
- 2:31And it goes back to being aware. Because after all, we can't
- 2:35change things or change how people feel or don't want to
- 2:39feel at that moment. But we can at least know where
- 2:42we stand or what we're going through actually.
- 2:47So I started thinking about this because a friend of mine and I
- 2:49were catching up. She was telling me about life in
- 2:52general and what she's been up to.
- 2:54And of course the conversation shifted to who she was dating.
- 2:58So when we were speaking, she said so I was in this
- 3:00relationship with this guy and it's over now.
- 3:04It was short lived, but something about it was
- 3:07different. I felt like I saw my future with
- 3:10him. I felt like I could have
- 3:12something with him, but there was something standing in the
- 3:15way of that. Actually, it wasn't a something,
- 3:18it was a someone. It was his ex.
- 3:21He wasn't over her and I figured that out and I couldn't stay
- 3:24with him. All of that sounded well and
- 3:27good. I thought the conversation was
- 3:29done, but little by little, she kept weaving in stories about
- 3:33him. And I realized, oh, this is not
- 3:36resolved. There's some hidden attachments
- 3:39here. She would say, well, I went on a
- 3:42date with this guy. But you know what's funny about
- 3:45that other guy? I really just think he should
- 3:48have made a go for it. We could have had a real
- 3:50relationship. I just saw things different with
- 3:53him. And as she was speaking about
- 3:56this topic, I started to think that the more she kept talking,
- 4:01the less I wanted to hear. All I could think of is that
- 4:05this beautiful girl wanted somebody that didn't want her,
- 4:09somebody that wasn't capable of choosing her, someone that
- 4:13wasn't over somebody, somebody that should never have even
- 4:17tried to be in a relationship because what he introduced into
- 4:20this girl's life was confusion. Then she would keep talking
- 4:26about something else and inevitably the conversation
- 4:29would go back. So this guy, I think that if he
- 4:33could just get over his ex, we could be together.
- 4:35But the reality is nobody likes him.
- 4:39And that's when I realized they were in a loop.
- 4:42He was emotionally unavailable. And he was letting her know that
- 4:45by talking about his ex and by talking about how he liked his
- 4:48ex and how he was not over his ex, he was making it very clear
- 4:51that he did not have room in his life for a real committed
- 4:54relationship. But yeah, there he was,
- 4:57pretending to be in a relationship with her.
- 5:00And by her keeping him in her life, she was effectively
- 5:04holding space. And that meant there wasn't
- 5:07space for a real relationship to form with somebody that actually
- 5:11was available for a relationship.
- 5:14This entire situation that she found herself in made her
- 5:18emotionally unavailable, just like him.
- 5:22But at the time, I didn't say anything.
- 5:25I just sat there. I realized that what she was
- 5:27going through was something that she needed to figure out on her
- 5:30own. It's also not that easy to tell
- 5:33somebody that they're emotionally unavailable or that
- 5:36she has to question why it is that you would ever want
- 5:39somebody that doesn't completely want her, or somebody that's
- 5:42letting her know that he's not choosing her, or that he really
- 5:45just wants to choose his ex-girlfriend who doesn't want
- 5:48him. All of that is very confusing,
- 5:51and as I talk, it sounds like spoken spaghetti, but some of
- 5:55these relationships are like that.
- 5:57They're messy. And the more that they're messy,
- 6:00the more that person thinks that their situation is special,
- 6:04nuanced, different than others. But I venture to say that those
- 6:08situations are not that different.
- 6:10Most people have relationships that get messy.
- 6:13One person wants something, an outcome where they share the
- 6:17future with somebody. And the other person is silently
- 6:20retreating. And little by little, they're
- 6:23leaving the relationship, but they're just not saying it with
- 6:27words. Instead, they're letting their
- 6:29actions speak. That is so tough, and I think
- 6:33for most people who have been in relationships, they've been the
- 6:36silent retreater and they've been the person that holds out
- 6:40hope for the fantasy future that the other person has already let
- 6:43go of or never wanted in the 1st place.
- 6:48But like so many people, it's not easy to say the truth.
- 6:52It's not easy to tell somebody that you know loves you, that
- 6:56you're just not that into them, or that you don't see your life
- 6:59with this person. Sometimes it's easier to just
- 7:02say nothing and let them figure it out the hard way.
- 7:07Let them plea, beg, cry, even fight with you just so that you
- 7:14don't have to say you know what, you're not right.
- 7:19It isn't that easy. Because if I wanted to, I would.
- 7:24I would do all the things you say.
- 7:27I would make that giant leap. I would forget about my ex.
- 7:31I would divorce my spouse. I would move cross country for
- 7:35you. All of those things, they're
- 7:38easy if somebody wants to do them, and they're impossible if
- 7:43somebody doesn't. But for the person holding on,
- 7:48it's hard to see it. It's hard to see things so black
- 7:52and white like they usually are, even though a lot of people like
- 7:56to mix in Gray. For a relationship to work, it
- 8:00takes two people both putting in effort, both trying, both making
- 8:06strides towards each other in a shared direction.
- 8:11So while my friend was talking, I remember that she said she was
- 8:14out there dating again. And then I thought about those
- 8:18guys. What are they experiencing?
- 8:21Who are they experiencing when they're with her?
- 8:24Because inevitably for you to go out on a date, you have to let
- 8:28somebody believe that you want to be there, that you're open to
- 8:31dating, open to a relationship potentially happening.
- 8:35And if you're not not over that person and you're bringing that
- 8:41phantom relationship or the holding out hope relationship to
- 8:45a table when you're on a date, well, then you're misleading
- 8:50people. You're confusing people, you're
- 8:53sending mixed messages. And none of that is good, easy,
- 8:59or fair. But what do you do when you
- 9:02break up with someone? Maybe you break up with them
- 9:04because they broke up with you, or it wasn't working and you
- 9:11didn't have a choice but to let go, but you're still not over
- 9:15that person. Maybe you're holding on to a lot
- 9:17of resentment and you can't shake it.
- 9:21Or maybe the person you have to get over is someone you were in
- 9:24love with, but they just didn't love you enough to meet you
- 9:27where you were asking them to meet you.
- 9:29And you have to accept that fact and the reality that your
- 9:33reality is going to look different than you thought it
- 9:35was going to. How do you get back out there
- 9:39when you're carrying that that hidden attachment?
- 9:43How do you bring an honest self to a table when you meet someone
- 9:47else? A new perspective.
- 9:50Well, I don't think a lot of people do that.
- 9:52I don't think a lot of people even consider these things.
- 9:56They just consider what people say to them.
- 9:59You've all heard the expression if you want to get over
- 10:01somebody, get under somebody, get distracted, but I'm not so
- 10:05sure about that. I'm not so sure if that's fair
- 10:08to anybody. On the one hand, you have
- 10:11somebody that's hopefully optimistic and on the other hand
- 10:17you have somebody that's going in saying, I mean, why not?
- 10:21I'll give it a shot. Maybe this person's going to be
- 10:23interesting. At least I'm getting out there.
- 10:27Or maybe after this date I can go back and tell my ex, look,
- 10:29I'm dating again, and maybe then they'll want me back.
- 10:33Maybe that'll do the trick. So yeah, emotionally unavailable
- 10:37people, they're complicated, mainly because they don't know
- 10:41that they are emotionally unavailable.
- 10:43As I said, I didn't know when I was, and I wasn't emotionally
- 10:48unavailable because I was holding out hope for somebody.
- 10:52I was emotionally unavailable because of things that had
- 10:54happened to me, situations that I guess I hadn't reconciled
- 10:58internally yet. And when it came to dating, I
- 11:01just jumped in. I didn't give myself a chance to
- 11:05think, how do you want to experience life differently?
- 11:08What are you looking for? What are you not looking for?
- 11:12What do you need to get over? I guess I never stopped to think
- 11:15about any of these things. I never really thought about
- 11:18what it is that I actually wanted, and I see that now.
- 11:22I see that I wasn't ready to sign up for whatever I thought I
- 11:25was signing up for when I checked a little box on a dating
- 11:27app that said looking for a long term relationship.
- 11:32But I recognize this now. I decided to take some of these
- 11:37anecdotes and put them into Chachi BT and see what Chachi BT
- 11:40says about emotionally unavailable people and how to
- 11:43detect them when you're on a date.
- 11:46So if you're somebody out there that is looking to be with
- 11:48someone, are there actually signs that you can look for?
- 11:53So here are my findings. They talk about the past in the
- 11:56present tense. The example was when we're doing
- 12:00this or she's always when referring to their ex.
- 12:05If the past relationship is still emotionally alive in their
- 12:08words, then they're not there with you.
- 12:12I found that easy to digest and remember.
- 12:15Or the person has a strong reaction to their ex.
- 12:17When they mention them, they become defensive, bitter, or
- 12:21they romanticize their X. So that means that there's
- 12:24unfinished business there because that X still elicits an
- 12:28emotional charge. And then there's obvious signs
- 12:32that people have experienced one way or another and have left us
- 12:35really confused. They say they're interested, but
- 12:39they send mixed messages. They're hot one minute, vague or
- 12:43unavailable the next. They push or pull and it's as
- 12:47though part of them wants a connection but the other part is
- 12:49still not there with you. Or they hang on to their
- 12:53excuses. If only he would break up with
- 12:56this person. If only he could get over his
- 12:59ex. And then that means that their
- 13:02happiness is depending on somebody else's choices so that
- 13:06they're not free to choose you. And the most obvious one is
- 13:09their actions and words don't match.
- 13:12They say they're ready, but they take no steps to building
- 13:15anything stable with you. So the divide that's forming is
- 13:20between language and behavior, and that's the clearest sign.
- 13:24I love learning those because I think we all know them.
- 13:28I think instinctually we can all tell when somebody's not present
- 13:31with us, but we want so badly to believe that what they're saying
- 13:36to us is actually based on facts.
- 13:40But the reality is nobody actually knows what the other
- 13:43person is thinking. People can say one thing and
- 13:47really be thinking another. People can do one thing and be
- 13:50saying another, and for some people they don't even feel at
- 13:54all. So doing or saying things
- 13:57doesn't even affect them because for them it's all sport.
- 14:02But for those of us who are not looking to carry old
- 14:04relationships into new ones, we have to become aware of this.
- 14:09Because if you do try to go into a new relationship and you bring
- 14:13all that unresolved stuff with you, it's like bringing ghosts
- 14:17to the table. The ghost of a past relationship
- 14:21that we're still holding on to. Holding on to all the things we
- 14:25wish could have happened, should have happened if only the other
- 14:29person wanted them to, or things we haven't gotten over, or the
- 14:34things we never wanted to have end.
- 14:37Because when you hold on to things and you don't get over
- 14:40them, then in new relationships they don't have a shot because
- 14:44you bring a long comparison and that steals potential.
- 14:49And then it leaves us emotionally unavailable,
- 14:53unavailable to try. I think what I learned from just
- 14:59hearing people's conversations, understanding that hope is a
- 15:04real hindrance at times because we wish so hard that we hear
- 15:09things that aren't being said. And when somebody is pulling
- 15:12away, it can be tough for so many reasons.
- 15:16One, it's the obvious ego hit and it's all the things you
- 15:22thought were coming true that aren't falling into place like
- 15:25you thought they would. But then comes awareness or the
- 15:30lack of awareness that you have for a situation and for your
- 15:34role in things. To make real changes in our
- 15:37lives, we need to be aware of this.
- 15:40Aware of the things that are happening that maybe we don't
- 15:42see right away. Like someone being inconsistent
- 15:47or seeing their negative patterns emerge that we wish we
- 15:50didn't see. We wish we didn't have to accept
- 15:54like people pulling away, like us not being over, people that
- 15:58have pulled away, like relationships not working out
- 16:02the way we wish they could have. But when we don't make those
- 16:05conscious efforts to change, we're held back.
- 16:09And if we want to really move that ball forward, we have to
- 16:13get out of our way. We have to welcome in awareness,
- 16:17welcome in the truth, and accept the ego hits when they come.
- 16:22Give yourself a little time to lick your wounds and move on
- 16:27because nobody should accept somebody that doesn't want to be
- 16:29with them fully. You don't want somebody that's
- 16:33half in, half out because they're not over somebody or
- 16:37something that happened to them or they don't know how to relate
- 16:40the way you need them to relate to you.
- 16:44I guess I'm saying that you don't need to settle for
- 16:47somebody that is unable to, unwilling to, or not ready to
- 16:51choose you. And you don't want to be the
- 16:54person either that has their head buried in the sand, not
- 16:58seeing or hearing what's going on around them, not willing to
- 17:02accept what somebody's done and how somebody else has moved on.
- 17:08And maybe now it's your turn to do the same.
- 17:11So while those people are choosing their past or staying
- 17:16in it, you don't need to because there's somebody that you can
- 17:20choose and that's you. Thanks for listening.
