- 0:00Today was the first day of middle school for my daughter and
- 0:05the first day of high school for my son. And if
- 0:09I'm being real, I have been emotional today.
- 0:13My baby is moving into the season where she's
- 0:16just not going to need me as much. My son is beginning
- 0:20the last 4 years before he graduates and
- 0:24moves into whatever God has for him next, which I'm sure is going
- 0:28to be amazing. And trust me, there's excitement in that, and I'm
- 0:31proud of them. But there's also just a little grief that
- 0:35I'm going through watching my kids grow up. I don't know if any of you
- 0:39guys have experienced that. But on top of all of that,
- 0:43I started my period today. I know, TMI.
- 0:47So emotionally and physically, I just wasn't at 100%,
- 0:52and instead of fighting that today I just decided to accept
- 0:56it. Today was going to be a minimum kind of day because sometimes
- 1:00not giving up doesn't look like pushing harder.
- 1:04Sometimes not giving up just looks like doing less without
- 1:08calling yourself a failure. If you're tired
- 1:12of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering
- 1:15why peace still feels so hard to hold on to,
- 1:19you're in the right place. Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser,
- 1:24and your boundaries coach. Here we talk about how to protect
- 1:28your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on what actually
- 1:32matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter,
- 1:35calmer, and more satisfying. So let's
- 1:39stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this
- 1:42next episode.
- 1:47Welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms. I am your host, Lori Grimes,
- 1:51and this is your midweek reset. So today we're
- 1:55talking about not giving up, but probably
- 1:59not in the way that you're expecting. This isn't about pushing through
- 2:04at all costs or ignoring your emotions,
- 2:07forcing yourself to perform when you are just running on
- 2:11empty. Just running on fumes. It's about learning the difference
- 2:15between quitting and actually just allowing yourself to
- 2:20recuperate, because sometimes the wisest thing you can
- 2:23do for your future self is to take a break today.
- 2:27So normally I am a structured
- 2:31kind of girly. I like my routines. I like knowing what
- 2:35I'm doing and checking off those boxes. But today I didn't feel emotionally connected
- 2:40to all of those goals that I usually end up
- 2:44meeting. And you know what? That's okay. We aren't going to feel
- 2:48connected to our goals and values every single day.
- 2:52That's impossible. So sometimes you've been working towards
- 2:55something for weeks, months, years, and you're thinking,
- 2:59is this even working? Maybe you're not seeing the results
- 3:03that you had expected, or maybe something has just knocked you off the
- 3:07path or the course. Maybe life is just feeling a little heavy,
- 3:10or maybe you're just tired. And when we're in that emotional place,
- 3:14everything can just suddenly feel like permanent,
- 3:18like I can't do this and this isn't working. Or have
- 3:22you ever had that question pop up like, what is the point?
- 3:26Or maybe I should just give up right here.
- 3:29That's probably not the moment. To make a
- 3:33big decision, friends. First, let your emotions
- 3:37calm down. Give yourself a breather and take
- 3:41a break. I want you to journal, to pray, to rest.
- 3:45You don't have to decide today whether you can
- 3:49keep doing this for another year. You just need to ask, what is the next
- 3:53right step? Because your minimums still count.
- 3:57That's what I chose to do today. I got some steps in, I just drank
- 4:02my water, ate some good protein, I rested,
- 4:05and I still actually got a couple things done that I wanted to
- 4:08accomplish. But I dialed it way back. I didn't
- 4:12expect my maximum for myself on a day when I didn't even have
- 4:17my maximum to give, guys. And most importantly,
- 4:21I didn't stack some shame on top of that. Now I
- 4:25know I'm going to be back on my schedule tomorrow. I have tomorrow planned out
- 4:29and I haven't abandoned my goals. I've allowed myself
- 4:33to recuperate so that I can come back, and that's an important distinction,
- 4:37right? Taking a break and giving up are not the same
- 4:42thing. So I want you to be on the watch for all-or-nothing
- 4:46thinking this week. This is where we get stuck in that black and white
- 4:50Perfectionistic thinking that can really, really get
- 4:54us into trouble. If I am not at 100%,
- 4:58I'm at zero. That's what that perfectionistic thinking tells
- 5:02me. Also things like, if I can't do the entire
- 5:05workout, why do I even go to the gym? Or how about,
- 5:09I ate an Oreo and now my day is ruined.
- 5:12If I can't get everything on my list accomplished, then I
- 5:16failed. But what if today is just a 40% kind of day?
- 5:20Then give a really good 40%,
- 5:23because again, your minimums are still counting,
- 5:26friend. Because sometimes the thing that sends us completely
- 5:30off the rails isn't actually the break,
- 5:33it's the shame we're putting on top of the break.
- 5:36We have one difficult day and we tell ourselves we have failed,
- 5:40then we feel guilty, then we think, well, I already messed everything up.
- 5:44And now one difficult choice starts gaining momentum,
- 5:47right? Instead of what if you said today I need a little
- 5:51less, I honored that. Tomorrow is a
- 5:55new day. You didn't go off the rails,
- 5:58guys. You just slowed down for a minute. I want you to count your
- 6:01wins before you count yourself out. And on those days when
- 6:06you are tempted to give up, I want you to go do something else.
- 6:10Count your wins. Before you look at how far
- 6:13you still have to go, look at how far you've already
- 6:17come. Those are your wins. What have you learned? Where have you grown?
- 6:21What are you doing today that would have been difficult for you?
- 6:24What have you already overcome, and what progress are
- 6:28you overlooking because you haven't reached the finish line
- 6:32yet? Sometimes we are so focused
- 6:36on the distance between where we are and where we want
- 6:40to be that we completely forget about the distance between where we
- 6:44started and where we are today. So count your
- 6:48wins before you count yourself out. There's research behind this
- 6:52too. In a series of 4 experiments published in Personality and Social Psychology
- 6:56Bulletin— that's a lot of words— researchers found that responding to
- 7:00mistakes and failure with self-compassion increased
- 7:04people's motivation to improve. In one experiment,
- 7:08people who responded to failure with self-compassion actually spent
- 7:11more time studying afterward. So think about that. Giving yourself
- 7:15grace— grace didn't make them care less.
- 7:18It actually helped them to try again. So maybe grace
- 7:22isn't letting yourself off the hook exactly. That's not what it's doing.
- 7:25Maybe grace is just giving you enough emotional space to get
- 7:29back on the hook tomorrow. So don't
- 7:32quit in the middle, guys. Galatians 6:9 says, let us not become
- 7:37weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if
- 7:41we do not give up. So I love those words, at the proper
- 7:45time, because there is usually a space between planting and
- 7:48harvesting, right? There is a space between effort
- 7:52and results. There is the middle. That messy middle
- 7:57can be frustrating. You can be doing the work and still not seeing the
- 8:01results yet, and that, that's often the place where we start questioning
- 8:05everything that we're doing, right? Everything comes up for questioning,
- 8:08and just because you haven't seen the harvest doesn't mean you
- 8:12didn't plant something and something's not growing underground.
- 8:15Maybe the breakthrough is on the other side of continuing.
- 8:19Maybe what God is building in you through the process is just as important
- 8:24as the outcome that you are waiting for. And maybe you don't
- 8:28need enough strength for the entire journey today,
- 8:32you just need enough for the next right step. So grace for today.
- 8:36In 2 Corinthians 12:9 it says, my grace is sufficient
- 8:40for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
- 8:44Sometimes, guys, we keep trying to manufacture more strength
- 8:49Like, come on, push harder, do more, you know,
- 8:52get yourself together. But what if we simply acknowledged,
- 8:55God, I don't have much to give today, and allowed His grace
- 9:00to be enough for today? So in Hebrews 4:16 it
- 9:04says, let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence so
- 9:08that we may receive mercy and find grace
- 9:12to help us in our time of need. So this is our time
- 9:16of need. Not after we've gotten ourselves all together. Not after
- 9:20we've performed perfectly. Not when
- 9:24we're 100%. When we need it,
- 9:28God will give you enough grace for this step.
- 9:32And then enough grace for the next one. And tomorrow,
- 9:36there's new grace for tomorrow. So what does your future
- 9:40self need? So before you give up, ask yourself, What does my future self
- 9:44need from me today? Not the perfect version of you,
- 9:48not the version of you who has unlimited energy,
- 9:51motivation, time, and emotional capacity.
- 9:56The real you with the capacity you actually
- 9:59have today. So maybe your future self needs discipline from you
- 10:03today. Maybe she needs some courage. Maybe she
- 10:07just needs you to stop procrastinating and finally take a step you've been avoiding.
- 10:11Maybe she needs you to rest. Maybe she needs you
- 10:15to stop criticizing yourself. I need that one,
- 10:19that one for sure. Maybe she needs you to recognize
- 10:23how far you've already come, because taking a break
- 10:26is not the same thing as giving up. You don't
- 10:30need enough strength today for next year. You don't need to figure out the
- 10:34entire journey. Just Take the walk, drink the water,
- 10:38eat the protein, pray, write, get sleep,
- 10:42count those wins, and don't shame yourself for having a hard day, guys.
- 10:47Sometimes perseverance doesn't look like pushing harder.
- 10:51Sometimes perseverance just looks like saying, I am still here,
- 10:55I am still committed, and I am just resting
- 10:59today. Hey friend,
