Latest / The Yield Doctor with James Deaker / Beyond the Price List: Most Media Rate Cards Leak Revenue
Transcript
- 0:00Most media companies think that their
- 0:02rate card is just a price list and
- 0:06that's where they go wrong. It's also
- 0:07one of the main reasons that companies
- 0:10are losing revenue without even
- 0:12realizing it. The mistake is in thinking
- 0:16that the rate card's job is to tell the
- 0:19market what things cost, but that's not
- 0:22actually what it does. The main job is
- 0:26to tell the market what it is that you
- 0:29sell. And that distinction is more
- 0:32important than it sounds. When people
- 0:35build rate cards, they tend to focus on
- 0:38the prices, but the real leverage is in
- 0:42the structure because the structure
- 0:44determines what buyers can buy, how they
- 0:48compare options, and ultimately where
- 0:52demand flows. And so if you get the
- 0:55structure wrong, better pricing won't
- 0:58save you. Crucially, there is a logic in
- 1:03how you need to build a rate card. You
- 1:06need to start with the product
- 1:09segmentation.
- 1:10Depending on your business, that might
- 1:12be the format of the ads, the site
- 1:15section, the audience, the device, the
- 1:19geography, or even the type of
- 1:21guarantees.
- 1:23Then you define the type of pricing
- 1:26model. And by that, what I mean is, are
- 1:28you going to charge on a CPM basis or a
- 1:32CPA basis or charge for different types
- 1:35of sponsorship? And then finally, after
- 1:38you've made those major decisions, you
- 1:40get to focus on the actual prices.
- 1:44Unfortunately, many companies do this in
- 1:47the reverse order, and that's where the
- 1:50problem starts.
- 1:52The other thing that is often missed is
- 1:54the cadence. A rate card is not a
- 1:58one-time exercise. you need to update it
- 2:02regularly because if you don't it gets
- 2:06stale and it stops reflecting the market
- 2:08value and when that happens you start
- 2:11leaking value without even realizing it.
- 2:16Another key point is that your public
- 2:18rate card is only one rate card that is
- 2:22in your system. Internally, you need to
- 2:26also have target prices where you expect
- 2:29to have the deals close, floor prices
- 2:32where approvals are needed below that
- 2:34price point, and you need to have
- 2:36additional structures like deals and
- 2:39other escalation processes. Without that
- 2:43type of system, your rate card can
- 2:46become more of a suggestion for how your
- 2:49sales team operates than an actual
- 2:52control mechanism, which it needs to be.
- 2:55If you step back, a good rate card needs
- 2:59to work on two dimensions. The first is
- 3:02the structure. Is it clear to the
- 3:05clients, to the buyers, what is actually
- 3:09available? and does it represent how
- 3:11those buyers think. There needs to be a
- 3:14clear logical value to the hierarchy of
- 3:17the different types of products that are
- 3:19listed. And the second major bucket is
- 3:22around usage. Is there discounting
- 3:25that's governed by structure? Is it
- 3:28clear who owns the rate card internally?
- 3:31Is it clear how often updates need to
- 3:34occur? If either of these uh systems
- 3:38break, then the overall system breaks.
- 3:42The main idea here is this. The good
- 3:46rate cards don't just price inventory.
- 3:49They shape the demand that's coming in
- 3:51from the market. They determine what
- 3:54gets bought, how budgets get allocated,
- 3:58and where revenue actually lands. If you
