- 0:00Cherie Ashana: You're listening to the Sacred She Reset podcast.
- 0:04If you're a woman in midlife who's done doing this alone and
- 0:08ready for real conversations, real wisdom, and real radiance,
- 0:12you're exactly where you need to be. I'm your host Sharia Shana.
- 0:17Your path to radiance starts here. Welcome back, beautiful
- 0:25ladies, to the Sacred She reset, awakening your radiant wisdom.
- 0:30I'm Shriya Shana, and it is an honor to have you here again for
- 0:34this next episode. And this week, we're looking at how to
- 0:39begin trusting yourself again when you're saying, "Oh, I've
- 0:43tried everything. So today we're going to dive into how there's a
- 0:49particular type of exhaustion that comes from trying again and
- 0:53again. When you've read all the books, you've bought the
- 0:58supplements, you've done all the meditation and save the
- 1:01meditations. You've started the routine, and you promised
- 1:05yourself that this time is going to be a little bit different.
- 1:09And then what happens? Life happens, right? Life gets busy.
- 1:14Someone needs you. You miss a day. The routine disappears, and
- 1:20before long, you begin telling yourself again, and a lot of the
- 1:24time, this is unconscious.
- 1:26Telling yourself again, nothing works for me, or perhaps I never
- 1:31follow through. I don't have enough discipline. I should be
- 1:37able to work this out for myself. I know I came under that
- 1:41banner a lot. I've left this too late, and this is what I hear a
- 1:46lot for for as ladies later on in life, going through the
- 1:50midlife transition of I've left it too late. It's too late for
- 1:54me. It's never too late. It's never too late to start. It's
- 1:58the time is now, today, the present moment, and so at some
- 2:03point, the fear is no longer only that the next approach will
- 2:09not work. So we get into that cycle of like, oh, another
- 2:11approach. Will it work? Will it not? And we get into this fear,
- 2:15but the deeper fear is, what if I am the reason nothing works?
- 2:20So today we're going to speak directly to that fear, because
- 2:23very often the problem is not that you're incapable of change.
- 2:29The problem is that you have been trying to create change
- 2:32inside of the same patterns that keep pulling you away from
- 2:37yourself, and that may not land for you straight away, so give
- 2:41that time to just mellow and marinate. But we're going to
- 2:46dive into this a little bit deeper on how our patterns can
- 2:50be pulling us away from ourselves. And so, when I
- 2:54reached the turning point in my life, which I I spoke into this
- 2:58in the last episode when I was 33, and I decided I need to
- 3:02become more involved in understanding my body. I
- 3:06imagined that the choice, that choice alone, would change
- 3:09everything.
- 3:10So it was a big decision, and I thought perhaps the decision
- 3:15itself would be enough. But there's work to do. There's
- 3:18always work to do. It's the first step, isn't it? That once
- 3:22I and that once I chose myself, I would suddenly know how to
- 3:25trust myself. Sometimes it begins as a very small, shaky
- 3:31voice saying, "There's, there must be another way. And I know
- 3:36that I know when I was sitting in when I've been sitting in
- 3:41some of these moments in my life, when I know that there's
- 3:43something moving and something needs to change, those have been
- 3:46the words that there must be another way. There's got to be
- 3:50another way, and so I spent a lot of time worrying and being
- 3:55afraid about getting it wrong. So I'd spent years relying on
- 3:59external authority, and if you haven't listened to that
- 4:03episode, I highly recommend you going back and just having a
- 4:06little listen to the backstory of my life, so you know where I
- 4:09am and how I how I am with you now here on this podcast. But I
- 4:14really did spend a lot of time giving giving my power away and
- 4:18relying on external authority, so doctors, specialists,
- 4:23prescriptions, procedures, and that became my cycle. That
- 4:29became the way I operated in the world.
- 4:33And so, while that was all valid and it was important and it had
- 4:38a place, I did not yet yet know how to bring my own voice into
- 4:43the conversation, so it spent so long externalizing that I I just
- 4:50I did not know the relationship with myself and my own voice and
- 4:55how to cultivate this and how to start. I swung between two
- 5:01extremes. At times, I wanted someone else to tell me exactly
- 5:05what to do, and that's that would be so nice, wouldn't it?
- 5:08Just someone telling you what to do all the time, but that is not
- 5:11empowering. And at other times, I believed I should be able to
- 5:15work everything out alone, and I can relate to that one in such a
- 5:20big way, because most of my life I have gone lone wolf, solo
- 5:26traveler, and we that also gets us stuck in a cycle of being on
- 5:31our own and in our own thoughts, and that's also it at times
- 5:36cannot be healthy. So neither of these positions created genuine
- 5:41self trust. One gave all my authority away, and the other
- 5:47one isolated me. I collected information, I studied,
- 5:51experimented, and I made lots of wonderful mistakes.
- 5:56Tried things that helped and things that did not. And there
- 6:01were times when I became frustrated with myself because
- 6:04healing was not unfolding in a straight line, and so what I
- 6:08mean by that is that the healing process was very much an up and
- 6:13down journey. There was a lot of peaks and troughs, and a lot of
- 6:17the time I felt like I was going backwards. You know, it felt
- 6:20like you know, step forward, three steps back, and so I
- 6:27thought that if I had truly learned the lesson, I should
- 6:31never return to the old pattern. But healing is never like that,
- 6:37is it? It's a relationship, and relationships require us to
- 6:42return again and again. Over the years, I have seen a familiar
- 6:50pattern in women who are intelligent, capable, and highly
- 6:54aware. They often know a great deal. They know they need more
- 7:00rest. They know move movement would help. They know they need
- 7:06better boundaries. They know they feel disconnected. They may
- 7:11even know exactly what practice would support them. But knowing
- 7:17is not the same as feeling safe enough to change. A woman may
- 7:22understand boundaries intellectually while still
- 7:25feeling terrified, and saying no will make her selfish. How many
- 7:32of you can relate to that? She may know she needs rest while
- 7:37carrying a belief that her value depends on being useful. She may
- 7:43want support while feeling ashamed that she cannot manage
- 7:47everything alone. We just carry so much. It almost seems crazy,
- 7:53even speaking into this and and sharing this with you.
- 7:55But it it is a thing. This is a thing, and this is what we go
- 7:59through. And she may crave change while fearing what the
- 8:04change will ask her to confront. So she begins, then retreats,
- 8:12begins again, then judges herself. Eventually, eventually
- 8:17she uses her inconsistency as evidence, and so we weigh up
- 8:22these stats, and it's like, yeah, nothing works for me. I've
- 8:25tried everything. See, I knew I couldn't do it. But
- 8:30inconsistency is not always failure. Sometimes it is
- 8:34evidence that an old pattern or protection pattern is still
- 8:39active. Now we often speak about change as though people resist
- 8:45it because they are lazy or unmotivated, but change can
- 8:50threaten belonging, identity, relationship dynamics, the roles
- 8:57that keep us safe. Suppose you have spent decades being the
- 9:02dependable one, the peacemaker, the caretaker, the woman who
- 9:06never asked for much. If you begin expressing needs, the
- 9:11people around you may not immediately understand, right?
- 9:15If you if you rest, someone may be disappointed. If you change
- 9:20your mind, someone may accuse you of being difficult. If you
- 9:24stop over-functioning, other people may have to carry more.
- 9:31Their body understands all of these risks, so even when your
- 9:36conscious mind says, "I want to change, another part might be
- 9:40asking, will I still be loved? Will I still belong? Who will I
- 9:47be if I am no longer the woman who holds everything together?
- 9:53This is why shame rarely creates lasting transformation. Shame
- 9:58tells a nervous system that change. Is punishment.
- 10:01Compassion tells it that change can be safe, so we need to make
- 10:06that shift, and that's what we're going to move into the
- 10:09shift now. The shift for me came when I stopped treating self
- 10:14trust as a feeling I had to wait for. I began to understand it as
- 10:19something created through action. Self trust grows when
- 10:23you hear your own need to respond. When you keep a small
- 10:27promise, it's these small little steps, tiny little bite sized
- 10:31chunks. And I'm just going to throw this in here because I'm
- 10:36thinking of it right now. But one of my mentors says, "What's
- 10:39the best way to eat an elephant, and it's one bite at a time. So
- 10:43it's these small little promises, these small steps.
- 10:46When you and when you tell the truth, when you ask a question
- 10:51and you start to get curious, when you change direction
- 10:54without making yourself wrong, when you seek support rather
- 10:59than waiting until collapse. Now that one right there is, I feel,
- 11:06is a huge one in our society because I know so many of my
- 11:13beautiful sisters who, and me included here. So I'm speaking
- 11:17from personal experience, where you go full on. You're just in
- 11:22action mode. Your, you know, productivity's on. You're on,
- 11:26on, on, on, on, and then you collapse. It's like out, and and
- 11:33then you you collapse because you could have you've seen the
- 11:38signs earlier on, and you could have actually asked for help
- 11:41sooner, and so you do not have to believe with absolute
- 11:46certainty that everything will work. You only need to become
- 11:51willing to remain in relationship with yourself while
- 11:54you discover what does, and so it's this beautiful dance we get
- 11:59to do, and this is a-it's a very different way of beginning.
- 12:05It's a different way of starting again. It's more gentle. It's
- 12:09kind. It's softer. It's tender. Tender is such a beautiful word,
- 12:13and when we drop into tenderness for ourselves around self-trust,
- 12:19it really slows everything down. It slows the narrative down for
- 12:24us. And so today, I've got three ways that you can begin trusting
- 12:31yourself again. And one is start smaller than your perfectionism
- 12:39wants. Now, if you're anything like me in the past, I'm a
- 12:43recovering perfectionist, and there's still traits of that
- 12:46that follow through today. But just you know, dialing, just
- 12:53pulling back, pulling back, and not having this laser-focused
- 12:58attention on it needing to be perfect. Often, the greatest
- 13:03change looks unbelievably messy, and so perfectionism loves
- 13:08dramatic beginnings, the complete new routine, the
- 13:14seven-day cleanse, the two-hour morning practice. I'm laughing
- 13:21and I'm I'm smiling at myself because this all of this I share
- 13:27with you comes comes from my own journey and from my you know
- 13:30working with other women as well and seeing this pattern play out
- 13:34and then we commit to a meditate to meditate every day for the
- 13:38rest of our natural life and it's just not sustainable,
- 13:42ladies. It really isn't. It's a very enthusi. It's enthusiastic
- 13:48on Monday morning, and by Thursday, it's packed its
- 13:51suitcase and left the country.
- 13:54So instead, choose something small enough to keep. I'm always
- 13:57thinking sustainability. Is this sustainable? Can I maintain this
- 14:03for the duration of how long? And am I open to allowing it to
- 14:08shift? Am I open to allowing it to move and be fluid? Because,
- 14:15as you know, ladies, we even when we've we've come through
- 14:19menopause and we've stopped bleeding, and there's no cycle
- 14:22there. We are still cycling. Our body remembers. I know mine
- 14:25does. It remembers. It knows this. We we follow these. We're
- 14:31very cycling. We follow these patterns and flow, and the moon
- 14:34and the seasons. We're highly beautiful, sensory, intuitive
- 14:39beings, And so, instead, keeping it small enough-five minutes
- 14:46outside, one glass of water before coffee, one honest
- 14:53conversation, going to bed 20 minutes earlier-it makes a huge
- 14:59difference. Putting your hands on your heart before answering a
- 15:03request, you know, and that's the big one where we go yes
- 15:07straight away and we overcommit to people around us, and then we
- 15:11kind of let it settle for a few days, and we're going, oh, so
- 15:15no, I don't really want to do this, or I don't feel like it
- 15:17anymore. It's okay to say maybe. Can I get back to you?
- 15:22The actions may seem small, but the deeper message is powerful
- 15:27because you're sending, starting to integrate new pathways, new
- 15:32neural pathways. You're retraining, and so it's like
- 15:37when I when I hear myself, I respond. That is how self trust
- 15:42begins, and so little steps. We're not overcommitting
- 15:47ourselves, and that's step number one. Number two, we are
- 15:53going to track our evidence of return. So many of us only track
- 16:03what they did not complete, and this is like that's where you
- 16:09know cross it cross it out. That's where the mistakes begin.
- 16:14We track out how incomplete we are. You you remember the missed
- 16:19walk, and now this is actually something in our humanness that
- 16:24we have naturally have a negative bias, so naturally
- 16:28slant towards the negativity of these things. It's just the way
- 16:33we work. It's the way we're wired, and that's why I say
- 16:37we're retraining ourselves here. So it does. It feels like we're
- 16:40training a new muscle. We're going to the gym and we're
- 16:42working out and we're doing one little weight at a time, one
- 16:45little rep.
- 16:46And so, instead of trying to remember the missed walk and the
- 16:50unfinished journal and the failed boundary you didn't hold,
- 16:53and you're beating yourself up about it, a moment that you
- 16:57overlooked, and when you know you just in chaos and you break
- 17:03down. So begin tracking different evidence. That's what
- 17:09I'm inviting you to do today. Notice when you recognized
- 17:13fatigue, when you paused before saying yes, when you asked for
- 17:20help, and so you're getting these nice little gold stars on
- 17:24the board, nice little green ticks instead of these red
- 17:27crosses. Notice when you spoke without apologizing; these are
- 17:32huge steps. These are massive, and just want to add here: we
- 17:37mustn't forget to celebrate the small wins. Things like this are
- 17:42huge, especially if you're someone. I don't know. I I
- 17:45remember taking a plane trip not that long ago, and a beautiful
- 17:49couple sat next to me, and all she did was said sorry. Nearly
- 17:54every second word she said, she got up, got a sorry, sorry,
- 17:57sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. I'm like, now that was a totally
- 18:01ingrained, unconscious pattern she was playing out.
- 18:04I found myself almost getting agitated and saying, "What are
- 18:07you apologizing for? She hasn't done anything wrong. But when we
- 18:11flip that and start recognizing and taking, like tracking this
- 18:17evidence of us improving, like spoke without apologizing, like
- 18:21I've just mentioned, it's um, it's it's great. It's progress.
- 18:27It's all progress, and all these little pieces and these little
- 18:33steps forward all layer up. And then you'll look back in a
- 18:37year's time, or six months, or even four months, and you'll be
- 18:41like, "Wow, I've come such a long way. So it's just shifting
- 18:45the narrative, shifting your perspective. What else here? Let
- 18:50me see. What else have I got in my notes? So you've yeah, when
- 18:53you rested before you collapse. Now that, like I spoke into
- 18:57earlier, that's a huge one. Recognizing when you need rest,
- 19:00and when you need to take care of yourself, and when you felt
- 19:05joy, tracking your joy, your joy meter, that's just you know
- 19:11huge. Like when you felt joy and vibrance and vitality, when you
- 19:18changed your mind, because it's okay to change your mind.
- 19:22All of these moments matter, every single one. So you're not
- 19:27searching for evidence to become perfect, because we're we're
- 19:33bypassing that. We're actually leaving that behind. We're
- 19:36going, hey, and going to say, hey, that's not where we're
- 19:38going anymore. You're gathering evidence that you are becoming
- 19:43present. Big deep breath, becoming present in your life,
- 19:50and you're actually cultivating this awareness. It's very, very
- 19:54different, and I'm sure if you're following me here, you
- 19:57can feel that there's a difference between the two. So
- 20:01let's move on to number three. Let yourself be supported. So
- 20:09one of my early mistakes was believing I needed to work
- 20:13everything out alone, and that within itself can become quite a
- 20:20painful cycle because then we start to push others out, and
- 20:24we're not relying on people anymore or asking for help, and
- 20:28we think we can do it on our own.
- 20:30Now that within itself, later on in life, can turn into where you
- 20:36start becoming very rigid within your life, there's no movement,
- 20:42and because you think you can do it all on your own, you become
- 20:44quite stubborn and obstinate. And from the outside, people
- 20:50might look in and see that, like, oh, she's a very stubborn
- 20:54old lady; she doesn't want any help. But inside, the person who
- 21:00is living that life of doing everything alone is all they
- 21:06really, really are crying out for is love and someone to
- 21:11support them. But they've gone so far down that track of being
- 21:16in that alone mode that it's become there's so many big walls
- 21:20around them, so let yourself be supported. Perhaps part of that
- 21:27is from come from not knowing who to trust. It comes from not
- 21:33knowing who to trust. Also, there's a big part which is
- 21:39pride as well playing into that, and also just really accustomed
- 21:45to surviving, and yeah, it's it can become very isolating and
- 21:53feel very lonely because then we, what can happen is we can
- 21:58then start to almost tell ourselves stories that there's
- 22:04you know the outside world is out to get us, and so you know
- 22:08that's going into the extreme. But when we isolate ourselves
- 22:13and don't don't ask for support, there's some really big patterns
- 22:17that can play out later on in our life that are not helping us
- 22:20at all. all, the belief is that you must be carrying everything
- 22:25by yourself. So support does not mean handing away your
- 22:30authority.
- 22:32You're not going to be giving anything away by asking for
- 22:34help. The right support helps you hear yourself more more
- 22:40clearly, and so that may come from a practitioner or a mentor
- 22:45or a doctor, a trusted friend, a circle of women, some other
- 22:51communities. It might be online or in person, and so the
- 22:55question is not, "Can I do this alone? And you probably can, and
- 23:01you probably have been for a long time. But how is that
- 23:04serving you? You have likely done many different things
- 23:08alone, and so I would say a better question to ask is, why
- 23:14should I have to? So feel that difference there. Can I do this
- 23:20alone? Why should I have to? And so you start to open yourself up
- 23:26to receiving rather than going. I'm going to work this all out
- 23:30on myself in my own head, in my own body, all those things. So
- 23:36there's three tips for helping to begin trusting yourself
- 23:42again. The first one, I'm just going to recap there, just to
- 23:45remind you. I'm going to put all this in the show notes as well.
- 23:47But the first one was start small, rather than what your
- 23:52perfectionism wants. So get that in check. Two, tracking your
- 23:56evidence of return. You know the times that you felt joy, and you
- 24:03felt supported, and you rested before collapse. And number
- 24:07three, let yourself be supported. Don't be on your own,
- 24:10ladies.
- 24:12Start to, you know, if you are someone out there who is on your
- 24:15own and you need support, it's time to reach out. It really is.
- 24:20We are in a time now when it's important for us to all come
- 24:24together and to really support one another, and so help is
- 24:28never too far away. So, if you're a lady out there who's
- 24:35saying I've tried everything, I, I, what I hear is
- 24:40disappointment, and I hear the fear of hoping again. And I've
- 24:48heard this a number of times when I've been in conversation,
- 24:53you know, and it might be in a women's circle or somewhere. And
- 24:57it's a really great opportunity, I think, when we catch
- 24:59ourselves. Just want to kind of dive deeper into this for a
- 25:02little while. When we catch ourselves in conversation with
- 25:07another and going, "Oh, I've tried everything, let's just
- 25:12look at that for a second. If if you've tried everything, how how
- 25:19is that humanly Possible, like for me, I'm looking at the words
- 25:25I've, I have, tried, you've attempted everything. Listen,
- 25:31that word everything. You've you're telling me you've tried
- 25:37everything in the whole entire world on this planet, and
- 25:42nothing's worked.
- 25:45And I'm calling out a slight overexaggeration of that comment
- 25:49there because we can we can really get stuck in that going
- 26:00back to the other thing, being being on our own, trying to do
- 26:03it all our own, or having the opinion that we know best, and
- 26:07it's really important to stay curious. It really is to stay
- 26:13curious in our lives because when we stop being curious,
- 26:17well, what's the point of us even being on this planet and
- 26:19walking this earth? What's the point? If you've tried
- 26:23everything and you know everything, then okay. But I
- 26:27invite you to actually take a look at what language you're
- 26:29speaking and what what words or spells or what are you casting
- 26:35with your with your words around this, because I, you know, I'm a
- 26:41I'm a woman who's had a lot of experiences. I've had a crazy
- 26:43life, lived a lot of done a lot of different things. Crazy,
- 26:46great, yeah, off the wall, whatever. I've got a huge story,
- 26:50huge history. I have not tried everything, and so if you are a
- 26:54woman that's saying I've tried everything, I I do.
- 26:59I hear disappointment. I hear that there's a fear there and a
- 27:03block of letting others in to support you, and and sometimes
- 27:10you have tried a lot, but you haven't tried everything, and
- 27:14there is always more in the tank for us to keep doing our best to
- 27:20keep going, to get up and start again, and I can relate to when
- 27:26you're in burnout or you've hit a wall and you've got exhaustion
- 27:30and complete fatigue. Trust me, I've been there several times in
- 27:33my life, and when I'm in that space, it's almost like a space
- 27:38of me feeling untouchable, where I well, I don't want to be
- 27:41touched. I don't want to be spoken to, and that's okay as
- 27:44well. It's okay to be in the cave and to be processing and to
- 27:47be integrating. But if we walk our life and go out saying,
- 27:51"I've tried everything, nothing works for me, where is the
- 27:54opportunity in that? You know, where where is the opportunity
- 28:00to keep growing. I think we limit ourselves in our
- 28:05languaging and the way we believe and the way we, you
- 28:08know, tell our stories, and we get stuck in those.
- 28:12That's what I feel. I feel we get stuck in them. I've been
- 28:16there. You've been there. We've all been there. We're human. But
- 28:20to say you've tried everything, you're not opening up to the
- 28:23possibility that something new is just around the next corner.
- 28:28And so, I feel it's important to start somewhere. Where where can
- 28:35you start? Make a list of what have you tried. What have I
- 28:40tried? What do I? What pattern do I keep bringing to everything
- 28:44that I try? And so let's start asking different questions.
- 28:50Let's start shifting our perspective around this, and
- 28:56start asking the questions that actually open us up for more.
- 29:00And this is where your power truly begins. And until then,
- 29:06you'll just continue to hit that same wall over and over and
- 29:11over. So I'd love for you to ask yourself. I've got a reflection
- 29:16for you today.
- 29:19I love you to ask yourself: Where have you been using an old
- 29:22pattern as proof that change is impossible? Where have I been
- 29:28using an old pattern as proof that change is impossible? And I
- 29:34know there's something under the hood, ladies. We all have
- 29:37something there, and yeah, it just take a journal out and take
- 29:44some time and ask the question out loud. Where have I been
- 29:48using an old pattern as proof that change is impossible for
- 29:53me? Perhaps you have been calling yourself inconsistent
- 29:58when you are over. Calling yourself lazy when you are
- 30:02depleted, calling yourself undisciplined when the plan was
- 30:07never realistic, calling yourself difficult when you are
- 30:12finally telling the truth. What would change if you stopped
- 30:16asking what is wrong with me and began asking what would help me
- 30:20feel supported enough to take the next step? So, if you'd love
- 30:27to explore this further, ladies, this has been a wonderful
- 30:30episode. I feel like there's been quite a bit of fire in my
- 30:33belly behind this one. Big message to share. Love to hear
- 30:37from you.
