- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: We all want to age well. And if you've scrolled
- 0:07through TikTok, crapped open a Blue Zone book,
- 0:10or watched Silicon Valley tech bro inject himself with
- 0:13goat placenta, you know that the longevity
- 0:15grift is booming. They are the
- 0:18best sellers on the New York Times best selling list. But here's
- 0:21the twist. Science already gave us a working
- 0:24formula. No grift required.
- 0:27Welcome to 4Q, where we slice through nutrition
- 0:29nonsense and serve the facts extra
- 0:32virgin. We are selling more ice baths, more
- 0:35infrared saunas, and yes, even beef tallow to
- 0:38smear on your feast like a paleo moisturizer.
- 0:41Longevity culture has become a bizarre marketplace of
- 0:44cold plunges and cow fat. Today, what
- 0:47actually works for healthy aging and what definitely
- 0:50doesn't? Before we dive into how to age well,
- 0:53let us clear something up. While we may
- 0:56not be able to dramatically extend our
- 0:59lifespan, we absolutely can
- 1:02improve our health span the number of years we
- 1:04stay active, independent, and mentally
- 1:07sharp. Living better matters
- 1:10more than living longer. Today on
- 1:13UM Forku, we're going to make sense of the madness of
- 1:16longevity.
- 1:20I am your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr. Terry
- 1:22Simpson, and this is Forq Fork
- 1:25University, where we bust a few myths, make sense of
- 1:28the madness, and teach you a little bit about food and
- 1:31medicine,
- 1:36the boring habits that actually work.
- 1:39The eternal life fantasy from Pharaoh's two fancy
- 1:42bottles. For centuries, people have
- 1:45searched for the secret to eternal life, whether
- 1:48it was locked in the tomb of a mummified pharaoh,
- 1:51whispered in the smoke of a witch doctor's hut,
- 1:54or hidden behind the eternally youthful facade
- 1:56of Dorian Gray. Today, we have our modern
- 1:59mystics. They don't wear robes or wave incense.
- 2:02Well, some of them wave incense, but they wear
- 2:05scrubs on Instagram. They run wellness
- 2:07clinics, they give TED talks.
- 2:11Many of them are selling methylated vitamins,
- 2:13resveratrol, nmn, and other
- 2:16compounds with sciency sounding names. People
- 2:18like Mark Hyman or chiropractors supplement
- 2:21influencers. People without a PhD between them,
- 2:24but a warehouse full of pills and potions to
- 2:27sell. What they're selling isn't much different than
- 2:30the elixirs and tonics peddled in the
- 2:331800s. It's the same promise in
- 2:35fancier packaging with buzzwords like
- 2:38sirtuitins, epigenic optimization,
- 2:41and cellular regeneration. Let's be
- 2:44clear. There is no magic capsule
- 2:47to reverse aging. If there were, these
- 2:50folks wouldn't need a subscription model. They'd get a
- 2:53Nobel prize. So before you hand over
- 2:56$89.99 a month for your longevity stack,
- 2:59ask yourself, is this Medicine
- 3:02or modern snake oil. Let's start with the
- 3:05basic unsexy yes.
- 3:07Supported by every legitimate aging study.
- 3:11Also yes. Sleep
- 3:13seven, nine hours. That's when your brain
- 3:16clears. Metabolic gunk like beta
- 3:19amyloid, exercise, cardio
- 3:22resistance training and balance work
- 3:25all reduce inflammation, preserve brain
- 3:27function and extend healthspan.
- 3:30If exercise could be put into a pill,
- 3:33it would be amazing. Vaccinations?
- 3:36Yes, really. Syngrix, the anti
- 3:39shingles, anti herpes zoster vaccine
- 3:42reduces dementia by 20%.
- 3:45Covid vaccines reduce
- 3:47cognitive decline risk and the last
- 3:5140 studies on statins show they
- 3:53decrease the risk of dementia by up to
- 3:5620%. Let's stop pretending that aging
- 3:59well is a secret. It's mostly lifestyle
- 4:02and mostly free. The Mediterranean
- 4:05diet is a science backed
- 4:07blueprint. If there's one diet with
- 4:10decades of actual peer reviewed research
- 4:13behind it, it's the Mediterranean diet.
- 4:16One large study years ago even showed that the more
- 4:19a person adhered to the Mediterranean diet by their
- 4:22score, the greater the benefit and increasing
- 4:25longevity they had by as much as 9%.
- 4:28That included their health span.
- 4:30Let's talk about red meat. A little bit goes a
- 4:33long way. So before the shirtless Paul
- 4:36Saladino tries to convince you to grill yet
- 4:39your fourth hamburger for breakfast, think about this.
- 4:43Studies that are actually scientifically based
- 4:45show that if you limit red meat to 4 ounces a day or
- 4:48less, it's fine. The lower saturated fat
- 4:51intake you have, the less chronic inflammation you will
- 4:54get. Increasing amounts of red meat lead to
- 4:57increasing risk of cancer, heart disease and
- 5:00type 2 diabetes. And after about 3
- 5:03ounces, your body won't absorb any more iron or
- 5:06many of the other macronutrients. The giant
- 5:08steak. Mostly you're just feeding your colon,
- 5:12not yourselves. In traditional Mediterranean
- 5:14regions, meat is a condiment. It is not a
- 5:17centerpiece. How about olive oil over
- 5:20butter? Extra virgin olive oil is rich in
- 5:23monounsaturated fatty acids like
- 5:26polyphenols. All of them act as a natural anti
- 5:28inflammatory. And bonus, your arteries and your
- 5:31neurons will benefit. Whole grains and
- 5:34legumes. Things like beans, lentils, farro, barley.
- 5:37They're packed with fiber, plant protein and nutrients. They feed
- 5:40your gut microbiome, which plays a key role in your brain
- 5:43health. And unlike refined grains,
- 5:46whole grains have been associated with less obesity,
- 5:49less type 2 diabetes, longer life,
- 5:52less heart disease and reduced cancer
- 5:55risk. They're also packed with more fiber per
- 5:58gram than most fruits and vegetables. How
- 6:01about polyphenol power berries? Dark
- 6:04leafy greens, Tomatoes, eggplants. These contain
- 6:06polyphenols that protect your neurons that is the cells in your
- 6:09brain and those long cells that you don't want to have
- 6:12neuropathy with. They enhance vascular blood vessel
- 6:15function, they reduce whole body inflammation, they.
- 6:18And they stimulate neurogenesis. They
- 6:20stimulate your brain nerves.
- 6:23How about a word about wine? Yep, it's on the
- 6:26Mediterranean diet, but it's one glass
- 6:29with food occasionally. And let's be
- 6:32clear, that's 5 ounces, not the
- 6:35usual 8 ounce pour you get at most restaurants.
- 6:38And it's meant to be once per day,
- 6:41max. In fact, if you
- 6:43don't drink alcohol during the day or
- 6:46night, you get a Mediterranean diet point.
- 6:49So a little wine doesn't seem to be a problem.
- 6:53A lot of wine leads to neuroinflammation.
- 6:56That headache in the morning leads to
- 6:59cardiotoxicity, leads to
- 7:01kidney toxicity, leads to your joints
- 7:04feeling horrible the next day. One glass is
- 7:07enough. None is better. Now. Fruits like
- 7:10berries, grapes, oranges and apples are a daily staple of the
- 7:13Mediterranean diet. They're rich in vitamins, fiber, polyphenols,
- 7:16and reduce the oxidative stress that support
- 7:19cardiovascular and brain health. Unlike juice,
- 7:22whole fruit provides satiety and a
- 7:25lower glycemic impact.
- 7:27Vegetables are a foundation. Think leafy greens, tomatoes,
- 7:30zucchini, eggplant, peppers, onions, cucumbers. Eaten in
- 7:33abundance and variety, they offer fiber, antioxidants,
- 7:36and the anti inflammatory compounds that reduce the
- 7:39risk of chronic disease. Aim for multiple
- 7:42servings a day. And yes, potatoes don't count.
- 7:47Interesting. You can still score a full point on
- 7:49the Mediterranean diet. Score one of nine components. If
- 7:52you just have three and a half servings
- 7:56of, uh, vegetables, that amounts to about nine ounces
- 7:59of vegetables. Maybe like the equivalent of several
- 8:01carrots. Here's what doesn't work, but
- 8:04sells like crazy. People who think
- 8:06alcohol is a health food. People who avoid vaccines
- 8:09and think that that's going to be better for you. People who ignore high
- 8:12blood pressure and high cholesterol. Let's talk
- 8:15about that Instagram longevity crowd. What they have
- 8:18is Botox, hair transplant ring lights,
- 8:21and still all of them are aging
- 8:24like everybody else. Why? Because the
- 8:27Hayflick limit still applies.
- 8:30Cells only divide so many times. No amount
- 8:32of powdered elk antler will change that.
- 8:36How about your mitochondria? Yep, your
- 8:38mitochondria age. And yes, gurus are selling NAD
- 8:41NADH supplements like they're the elixirs of
- 8:44youth. Truth, NAD perks up
- 8:47mitochondria, but does it extend life? Not
- 8:50really. If it did, I'd be giving it to my
- 8:5215 year old dog. And probably be taking it myself.
- 8:56But if you want to really support your mitochondria, here's
- 8:59some simple things you can do. Move more,
- 9:02sleep more, Eat more Mediterranean Style
- 9:05Diet when you talk about aging
- 9:08with science and sanity, we don't need a
- 9:11magic pill. We need movement, Mediterranean style
- 9:14meals, managed health conditions, and
- 9:16modern medicine. The science is in.
- 9:19The question is, will you follow it?

- 10:31Hey Ivo, it just bugs me that
- 10:34wine doesn't count as a serving of fruit.
- 10:39>> Speaker B: What? Next you'll tell me that
- 10:42beer doesn't count as a whole grain
- 10:45heretic. Oh, and that background rumble
- 10:48that you hear? Uh, that's the ocean. I'm on
- 10:51vacation in Belize. Cheers.
