- 0:05Finding power, man, embracing layers yet.
- 0:13Hello, Melissa Crook here. Welcome to the Field podcast.
- 0:18I'm your host, Melissa Crook, and I'm your guest, Melissa
- 0:21Crook today. I'm so happy to be here.
- 0:25And this is something I'm going to try to do more often.
- 0:28I'm going to pop in a little more often solo just to give you
- 0:33some updates on what's happening.
- 0:35I'm here at the network and also in my own story as I live out
- 0:41the feel framework, finding empowerment, embracing layers.
- 0:44You got an opportunity last month if you saw our anniversary
- 0:48show to hear me really give you an updated input deep dive into
- 0:54each of the talking points. I'm not going to do that today.
- 0:57I'm going to more take you on a journey of all that's been
- 1:01happening in general through this Season 8 as we get ready to
- 1:06wrap up our eighth season here on the field.
- 1:08Podcast of some new things we're doing with that, things we've
- 1:12learned from our guests that have really stuck out to me and
- 1:17some ideas throughout the talking points.
- 1:19If there's certain areas you're struggling with, kind of point
- 1:23you back to some episodes that really speak well to that
- 1:26talking point that you might want to visit.
- 1:28Also, remember, if there's a talking point you're really
- 1:32struggling with, if you go into our show notes, my editor Rio
- 1:37does a great job of putting in all of the time stamps of each
- 1:42of our talking points. So if you like, gosh, I really
- 1:45need a filler on living out of my own expectations today, or I
- 1:50just need that boost. Go into our episodes and find
- 1:53that Living out of your Own expectations time stamp.
- 1:56And spend a little time in the morning or on your lunch break
- 2:00or at the middle of the day hitting those specific areas in
- 2:03each of our episodes to give you that reminder, that boost, that
- 2:07support you need. So that's something else you can
- 2:09do. I think that is really, it can
- 2:12be really helpful, but it doesn't require listening to a
- 2:15full episode. Pick up those points and parts
- 2:17that you need some extra support on and go find those time stamps
- 2:21in our show notes. So I think today the big thing
- 2:27that I have kept thinking about over the last few weeks is gosh,
- 2:31we really did a lot in this 4 plus almost 5 month period of
- 2:38season 8. We brought you 2 episodes per
- 2:41week instead of one for the first time.
- 2:45We opened each episode with ways to engage recordings for me, as
- 2:51well as having the ways to engage in our show notes and in
- 2:57our blog where Jessica Gears and our writer wraps that each blog
- 3:02up each week with the ways to engage.
- 3:04So we really gave you a lot of pointers on those to find the
- 3:08ways to engage. We're going to do that a little
- 3:09differently in the fall, but they're still going to be very
- 3:12present in the blog every week. So check out that blog.
- 3:16I want to feel like, you know, Jessica's blogs really give you
- 3:20a snapshot of what's to come and the ways to engage and prepare
- 3:24for it. But she also gives her take on
- 3:28things. And she is a different
- 3:29generation than me. She's in her mid 20s.
- 3:32And so to get her perspective on these different episodes, and
- 3:36you'll get to hear more from her about that on Thursday.
- 3:40So we started doing those things.
- 3:43We really started trying to tap into the SEO piece of promoting
- 3:49our episodes to make sure that we were tapping into all the
- 3:54audiences that are out there that are looking for our
- 3:57information that haven't been able to find this yet.
- 4:00And that's an ever evolving process.
- 4:02So we got a lot more in tune to that piece of things.
- 4:08I started speaking more about this framework, about how you
- 4:14can utilize it in your own life and use it as a guide to keep
- 4:22you on track, to keep asking yourselves these questions that
- 4:26you hear us talk about on the podcast regularly to make sure
- 4:30you're living in alignment. So I I love the speaking part
- 4:34and with the speaking part, I was able to create our online
- 4:41course for the first time. In this online course is a deep
- 4:45dive into these talking points. I do it in a little different
- 4:49order when I speak and in the online course and even in our
- 4:53book, which we'll talk about in a minute because we're coming up
- 4:56on our one year anniversary of our embracing layers
- 4:58unapologetically book. But this is a really like just
- 5:03all taking all the things I've learned from applying this
- 5:06framework of my life, taking all the things I've learned from our
- 5:10guests and the women in our network on what they're learning
- 5:14from applying it and really being able to take all those
- 5:17resources and putting it into a really comprehensive online
- 5:22course. And then Kim Mosman, who is a
- 5:25guest that you heard from this season on the podcast and she's
- 5:28also been on the panels with me, the Together We Feel panels on
- 5:32our YouTube page. She suggested you need an on you
- 5:36need a book, a workbook to go so different from our book where
- 5:41you read the chapters. There's a ways to engage.
- 5:43It's an actual just book to read and do together in a book club
- 5:47do with your journaling. This online course book goes
- 5:50along with the online course, gives you places to take notes,
- 5:55gives you probably 75% of the language you hear me talking
- 6:01about. And the online course is written
- 6:03out in the workbook so you can go back and revisit it.
- 6:07So if your group of women participates in the online
- 6:11course, but you're not the one that actually purchased that
- 6:14maybe the head of your organization that you
- 6:18participated in is the one that actually purchased the online
- 6:21course, but you got the workbook that you know, it gives you that
- 6:26thing to take home with you and continue to revisit yourself.
- 6:30So there's just there's a multitude of ways now for you to
- 6:35access. And I realized during this
- 6:38process that I finally in this four year period over time have
- 6:43put together the network of resources that I was always
- 6:47hoping to. I just didn't necessarily know
- 6:49it when I started. So there's multiple ways and
- 6:52mediums now for you to access our information in terms of
- 6:59utilizing, finding empowerment, embracing layers.
- 7:02And you're like utilizing these talking points and key questions
- 7:06that we ask. And whether you want a more
- 7:09casual, you know, way to approach it by listening to the
- 7:12podcast each week and reading the blogs and maybe taking a
- 7:15little deeper dive and taking those ways to engage from the
- 7:19blogs into your journaling to help you really engage with that
- 7:23episode. Or if you want to really
- 7:24breakdown the talking points point by point, you can start
- 7:28with our book and then really take that deeper dive with the
- 7:31online course. I can come speak to your group.
- 7:33I've been speaking throughout the summer starting last May,
- 7:37speaking both in person and virtually at several spaces
- 7:42across California and the world, depending on whether I was
- 7:48online or in person and continue that last week.
- 7:52So, and we'll be continuing that throughout the fall.
- 7:55Go to ourcontactform@embracinglayers.com.
- 7:58Reach out to me. I'm now also available for
- 8:01one-on-one advising. I'm calling them empowerment
- 8:04sessions. This first one is free.
- 8:06It's a 30 minute session. You jump on with me, you go to
- 8:09thatcontactform@embracinglayers.com. You talk to me about what it is
- 8:14you're needing support in and then we create a plan for you,
- 8:17whether it's me walking you through the entire 8 talking
- 8:22points and three key questions, either one-on-one or via the
- 8:26information from our online course in the corresponding
- 8:29workbook. Or if you just need some support
- 8:31on a few, whatever that looks like for you.
- 8:34So if you want that accountability and a little more
- 8:36of that one-on-one weekly, I'm going to do this.
- 8:39I'm going to schedule this session with Melissa to make
- 8:42sure I'm investing in me. And that's one of the things
- 8:45that I wrapped up my speaking with last Friday.
- 8:48And you'll hear time and time again from our guests throughout
- 8:51and eight and all of our seasons is you are worth investing in,
- 8:57you are worth the investment. So think about all these ways
- 9:01you spend and give your time and money to and do any of them
- 9:07involve you? And So what does it look like to
- 9:11take some of that time and money and invest in you so that you
- 9:16can then show up as the wholly healthiest, authentic version of
- 9:21yourself? So it's been a lot of fun to
- 9:23talk to women about this, both by speaking to them and
- 9:27unveiling the online course. And we're coming up on our book
- 9:30anniversary next week. It's going to be one year since
- 9:33we released our book and in honor of that, we're kicking off
- 9:37a new book club this fall. Join our sub stack.
- 9:40Jessica Garrison on my team runs our sub stack.
- 9:44It's the embracing layers network sub stack at the field
- 9:47podcast. Just go on sub stack at the
- 9:50field podcast. That's where you can learn how
- 9:52to join the book club. And we have other authors that
- 9:57have been guest on our podcast in the past bringing their books
- 10:02as part of this book club. So it's a whole wide-ranging.
- 10:04We're kicking it off with our book but and going into some of
- 10:08their other books you heard about when they've been on the
- 10:11podcast and panels with us. But maybe you've now you get to
- 10:15actually have a guided deep dive through their book with the
- 10:20author. So join our sub stack tomorrow.
- 10:24Jessica Garrison at 3:00 PM Pacific, 6:00 PM Eastern is
- 10:28doing a live to unveil the that schedule throughout the year.
- 10:34We kick off our book on September 17th.
- 10:37So this is a great way to do it with a group of women, do it
- 10:40with the authors themselves and and learn from each other,
- 10:44support each other, hold each other accountable.
- 10:47So that's the way we're celebrating our one year
- 10:49anniversary with our book next week.
- 10:51So this has been really the year of putting kind of a a cap or
- 10:58bow on look at all these resources we have on now.
- 11:01Whether you're a reader, a listener, you like a good online
- 11:05course webinar, you like a workbook.
- 11:07There's you like going through the blogs and grabbing the ways
- 11:10to engage. You like going to our resources
- 11:13page and following and learning more from the guests we have on.
- 11:17There's a multitude of ways now and my hope and and and goal
- 11:22through this whole network as I started this four years ago was
- 11:25when a woman comes to our platform, they find a way to
- 11:29connect with us that is authentic to them, that is
- 11:32natural to them, that feeds into the way they like to connect and
- 11:37learn and invest in themselves. So that was a big thing that we
- 11:41really kind of completed the process on and rolled out this
- 11:44spring as we were continuing to to drop the two episodes a week
- 11:48and the two episodes a week then kind of came over time.
- 11:51I started thinking talking about it last fall as I was getting
- 11:54more and more guest requests and, and knew that I was either
- 12:00going to have to say no to people and put people off longer
- 12:04or I was going to have to go to start dropping 2 episodes a
- 12:08week. And the idea first came up from
- 12:10our friends at Pod Match and, and encouraging thinking about
- 12:14that as we joined the Pod Match Network and got even more
- 12:18involved there. And I would so many of the
- 12:21guests you hear from come from our friends at Pod Match.
- 12:23I'm so appreciative of them and their resources and support.
- 12:27So they kind of planted the seed and then as I was talking to
- 12:30more people that did it and started talking to my team, we
- 12:35did a test run with it at the end of Season 7 to see how it
- 12:39felt for my team to make that change.
- 12:42Everyone agreed it was worth trying.
- 12:43And now we've come to the end of Season 8 and we're going to
- 12:46continue it through this fall season and Season 9.
- 12:49That'll kick off on the week of September 9th.
- 12:53So so yeah, that and what that means for you, the listener is
- 12:58you get twice the resources. What it means for women is I get
- 13:03to highlight twice the amount of women a week now and their
- 13:07voices and their resources. And I love that so much.
- 13:11So we've done that. We did Subs, we've gotten really
- 13:14engaged in our sub stack with our Sub Stack Lives and bringing
- 13:18those guests that have already been with us on our podcast
- 13:21platform onto our sub stack lives.
- 13:23And right now we're focused on those authors.
- 13:25So another way you get to learn and engage with our guests.
- 13:28We've, we've really taken advantage of all these different
- 13:31modes of communication and platforms.
- 13:34We have to try to reach all the different parts of our listeners
- 13:38and audience that are out there in a way that feels connectable
- 13:41and, and meaningful to them. So what I want to do now that I
- 13:45kind of introduced that and, and where we're going with the
- 13:50network and as we continue into the fall, I want to talk about
- 13:54the guests that we had and do a little reflection here of the
- 13:58guests that we've had and talk about some of the things that
- 14:02you got to hear from them, learn from them throughout the year.
- 14:06So or throughout the season. It feels like a year.
- 14:08It started April first. We kicked off on April Fool's
- 14:11Day, which was not meant to be an April Fool's joke.
- 14:14So we kind of laughed about that.
- 14:16I think when we promoted it, we're like, no, we really are
- 14:18going to be with you on April 1st.
- 14:21Not a joke. So you know, we heard from our
- 14:25friend Laura Telosi. Laura has been with us on
- 14:28multiple platforms over the last year, year and a half on our
- 14:31radio show when we did that 2024, on our panels, on the
- 14:35Together We Feel panel show that we kicked off in January this
- 14:41year. Every Monday, those panels are
- 14:43there. If you have some guests that you
- 14:44love, you want to hear more from them, go to those panel shows.
- 14:47They're showing up with me on the panels.
- 14:50And then and then she finally got to do a solo episode with
- 14:53me. And so it's so great to have
- 14:56Laura with this. And she really helps you think
- 14:57about your hunger and why you're eating when you're eating and
- 15:02being able to attach your habits and your emotions to create
- 15:06healthy relationships with your food, to make sure you're
- 15:10eating, you know, Whole Foods to make sure that you're not eating
- 15:17to numb, but that you're eating when you're hungry.
- 15:19That you're not ignoring your hunger because you don't think
- 15:22you should be hungry yet, but you're honoring that hunger and
- 15:25filling your body with healthy foods and really helping you
- 15:28reframe, rethink the way you eat and how you eat and when you eat
- 15:33and creating a healthy relationship with your food.
- 15:36Mariela de Santiago is that she's got great resources.
- 15:40She's in the Southern California, San Diego County
- 15:46area, I believe, down there, and she's really helping young moms
- 15:50find community resources and support.
- 15:52She's got mom groups that meet locally there in the San Diego
- 15:56area, but she also has a podcast.
- 15:58So go to embracinglayers.com to our resources page if you want
- 16:03to listen to that. But great resource resources
- 16:07from Mariela. Logan Hefford spoke to us about
- 16:10his healing journey as he overcame and acknowledged his
- 16:18sexual sex addiction and, and, and what that was doing to the
- 16:22relationships in his life, his marriage, his children, his
- 16:27relationships on the whole. And I thought about this episode
- 16:31of like you all know that I mostly have women on here.
- 16:35This this platform is for women, by women with women that there
- 16:39are times where I will bring men on because sometimes topics are
- 16:42just just are are applicable across the board.
- 16:48And when I Logan reached out to me a few months prior to him
- 16:53being I think was last fall 2024.
- 16:56Initially I was very thoughtful and like, huh, this could be a
- 17:01sticky topic if it's not approached with a lot of
- 17:06curiosity and empathy and accountability.
- 17:11And so I had a pretty lengthy meeting with him to make sure I
- 17:15thought that he was really going to speak to it from that lens
- 17:19and, and, and determined that the yes, this was a conversation
- 17:24we were going to have because sexual addiction is much more
- 17:27prevalent. And then we like to talk about
- 17:30and you know, here on this, this platform, I like to talk about
- 17:33the things that we've been told not to talk about because these
- 17:36get in the way, not talking about them and stuffing them get
- 17:39in the way of us living our healthiest, most authentic
- 17:42lives. So we brought Logan on very
- 17:44thoughtful, very a lot of accountability, a lot of
- 17:49resources, a lot of truth and honesty.
- 17:52And he speaks to boundaries really well.
- 17:54So we brought Logan Hufford on, we brought Jen Axe on, and Jen
- 18:00is a firecracker and she's just got so much energy.
- 18:04She's thriving in midlife. She does a lot of work with
- 18:08internal family systems and how those impact our relationships,
- 18:12how those impact our layers, and she speaks to that really well.
- 18:16She's got a book that's going to be coming out soon.
- 18:19There's a ton of energy. So so we had got to share Jen
- 18:23Axe with you, Veronica Williams. What a treasure.
- 18:26She and her husband Darrell work.
- 18:31She we brought Veronica on. Darrell is her her assistant
- 18:35essentially sets up all of her, her podcast and speaking things
- 18:40for her. But he is a retired veteran and
- 18:44they help couples really navigate those tricky areas in
- 18:49relationships. They're very supportive to
- 18:52veterans and their spouses. And Veronica has A and, and
- 18:57Veronica speaks and has a, is just an empathetic heart that is
- 19:02just shows up for people. But had to learn about the
- 19:05importance of boundaries in her own life because she is such a
- 19:09giver and supporter. And she also had to learn and
- 19:13she really helps women, especially women when you're you
- 19:16are your military spouse and you're and you're flying solo
- 19:21quite a bit. Billing, being willing to ask
- 19:23for and receive help. So she talks about the
- 19:26importance of giving from an overflow from a full cup versus
- 19:30an empty one and being willing to ask and receive help.
- 19:33E Paul, another firecracker, big clit energy.
- 19:38If you didn't listen to the episode with E, that should send
- 19:42a spark plug. If you had to go listen to it.
- 19:46She it went on this whole kind of after her divorce in mid
- 19:50life, this whole kind of exploration of the things that
- 19:54had been holding her back in her life and really discovered that
- 19:58experiencing pleasure and understanding how our bodies
- 20:02work and the fact that we have an organ as women called the
- 20:08clitoris. It exists specifically for
- 20:11pleasure and really unpacking the tropes and narratives around
- 20:15sexual health that exists especially for women.
- 20:18Having confidence there's no shame in sexuality and healthy
- 20:23relationships with yourself and, and, and the, the good hormones
- 20:28that pleasure produces, not just sexually, but pleasure in
- 20:31general, whether that's really slowing down to enjoy your food
- 20:37or this sense in the air or the, the visuals of the outside when
- 20:43you're in nature. I mean, there's just so many
- 20:45pieces and components to it. But we've gotten so much
- 20:48improper education about this, starting with our kids when
- 20:52they're in middle school. And so she really talks about
- 20:54that and opens up about that and the importance of proper
- 20:58education around this and that the no shame in this being a
- 21:03part of our life. We were created with this.
- 21:05It's part of our bodies. So we should feel freedom in,
- 21:11but we also need to be educated properly about how our bodies
- 21:14work so we can again, there was no, I mean, the clitoris wasn't
- 21:18even recognized as an organ in the woman's body, I think until
- 21:21the early 2000s. So the research on this, the
- 21:24science behind this is still very new, but a really, really
- 21:29eye opening. A fun episode with E Paul Ellen
- 21:34Smith, our suburban troublemaker.
- 21:36She has the book memoir of a suburban troublemaker.
- 21:39Love the way this book is written, love the way it's laid
- 21:42out. Short chapters, really
- 21:44reflective, really addresses the elements of her time that she
- 21:50was living in in conjunction with the experiences she was
- 21:54having in her everyday life. Whether it's just that those
- 21:58subtle notes of racism and misogyny, misogyny and
- 22:02patriarchy and bigotry that were happening around her that nobody
- 22:10was talking about, but everybody was experiencing.
- 22:12And, and she talks about in this episode the importance of
- 22:17listening to your children and being really good listeners as
- 22:22parents. She's got mommy and me Diaries
- 22:24with her daughters that are places where they can each go in
- 22:28and write their thoughts and connect with each other.
- 22:30So great episodes out there. Beth Sanwin from You've met Beth
- 22:35on our radio show, you've met Beth on our panel shows, You've
- 22:39met Beth now and our podcast this season.
- 22:42She's been a Pilates instructor for years.
- 22:45She dealt with some very serious health issues through this.
- 22:48These early things she had to deal with early on and healing
- 22:51from those. There was a lot of trauma that
- 22:53came with that and she found that through Pilates, she could
- 22:59not only move her body physically, but she could move
- 23:03through her body emotionally and mentally and really have a
- 23:07trauma informed healing approach with her Pilates.
- 23:12And so she introduces that to you Trifecta Pilates.
- 23:15But check out Beth, ton of wisdom in there, especially
- 23:18regarding that mental, emotional, physical health
- 23:21connection. Then we had Comfort Woods and
- 23:24she really fires in on the power of saying no, realizing we're
- 23:29just as important and worthy of care as those were giving care
- 23:34to. Setting boundaries is the kinder
- 23:37thing for people around you to do for people around you.
- 23:40Really hits on that really well. There's other stuff from her,
- 23:43but that's something she really hits on.
- 23:45Lee Schulman. I love Lee.
- 23:48She took a year off to care for herself and reset where she
- 23:53wanted to live from. She called it her year of
- 23:56selfish, so to speak, but it allowed her to assess her life
- 24:00and and see where she was and what was working, what wasn't,
- 24:04where she needed healthy boundaries, what her values were
- 24:07and how she wanted to live those out moving forward.
- 24:10And this was necessary for her because she just got to a a
- 24:13place in her life where mentally, physically,
- 24:15emotionally, she was felt like she was shutting down and she
- 24:19had to kind of go in and save herself.
- 24:22And she talks about this and how this allowed her to not only set
- 24:27the boundaries, but understand where she needed that.
- 24:30And it's a it's such a good episode.
- 24:32So check out Lee if you haven't yet.
- 24:34Then we had Suzanne Kohlberg. Suzanne is a kick in the pants.
- 24:36She joins us from down under in Australia.
- 24:39You might know her as the Nope coach.
- 24:41She's had that podcast for years, but she's branching out
- 24:44more, you know, to a lot more one-on-one work and small
- 24:47workshop focused work. She's very boundaries focused
- 24:51and she talks about the importance of not skipping the
- 24:54pit stops, not skipping that moment where you stop and change
- 24:59your tires and get an oil change.
- 25:01That applies to us too. Don't skip the pit stops.
- 25:04When you pit, skip the pit stops.
- 25:07That's a lot to say out loud. Then you not only do you crash
- 25:12and burn, but you can take everybody down around you with
- 25:15you. So think about it.
- 25:16If that's a metaphor that helps you when it comes to yourself
- 25:19care, think about those pit stops.
- 25:20But Suzanne, she's a kick in the pants.
- 25:22Check her out if you haven't yet.
- 25:25And if these are episodes you've already checked out, maybe this
- 25:28is making you think about, oh, yeah, I missed that part of the
- 25:30episode. Maybe I should go back and check
- 25:32that out. Remember, we've got those, those
- 25:35time stamps in the show notes to pick up those pieces and parts
- 25:38that really you're feeling like you need a, a, a little bit or
- 25:42support in Carrie Pierce loved Carrie.
- 25:46She talks about the concept of a dark empath.
- 25:48And what that means is you're highly empowered.
- 25:53You are a loving, giving person, but you have created an IQ
- 25:58sometimes through hard lessons where you can sniff out the
- 26:02predators from a mile away. I mean, the predators that just
- 26:05want to prey on your time and your energy without giving back,
- 26:09without supporting you, without honoring your boundaries.
- 26:11She talks about that in a really meaningful way that's super
- 26:14supportive and helpful through a lot of her own experiences.
- 26:18Arlene Miller. I loved what Arlene said about
- 26:21this. You know, I think I run into
- 26:23people sometimes when they hear the word expectations or
- 26:27boundaries. For them personally, that has
- 26:29kind of meaning. For Arlene, expectations feels
- 26:33like judgments. Our friend Doctor Fanny Label on
- 26:36Jere wrote a blog last year about the word boundaries
- 26:39triggers her. So they found other words and
- 26:42ways to describe those same meanings.
- 26:45So she's still living out of her own expectations, but she's got
- 26:49a different way of talking about it.
- 26:51And, and, and she really focuses in on how words are important
- 26:55and it's important for us to, to when those words trigger us,
- 26:59like, OK, but what's, what's the actual meaning versus my story
- 27:03in it? And what are other words I can
- 27:04use around that by still applying this principle to my
- 27:08life, still knowing what, what I want out of my life versus what
- 27:13others have been telling me I should want out of my life.
- 27:16So technically expectations and she calls them adaptable plans,
- 27:20but it's just a good reminder of those words trigger you look at
- 27:25the deeper meaning behind them and find words that work for
- 27:27you. So if you're not a fan of
- 27:30expectations, she's got adaptable plans.
- 27:32If you're not a fan of boundaries, maybe it's Guidepost
- 27:37or our friend Cat Newport. In the very next episode after
- 27:41Arlene, she calls them living Hedges has a metaphor for
- 27:46boundaries. And Kat really talks to us about
- 27:48the No More Good Girl syndrome as well.
- 27:51And she talks about the boundaries and that remembering
- 27:55that they can feel uncomfortable in the beginning.
- 27:58Sometimes you might bump up against people that aren't used
- 28:03to you showing up that way and your people pleasing nature
- 28:05might try to tell you that it's a bad idea when in actuality is
- 28:09just everybody adjusting to this new healthy way you're showing
- 28:14up. But she living hedges is another
- 28:16way. Boundaries is a word that rubs
- 28:19you the wrong way. Stacey Olson then joined us and
- 28:23she she really hit a reset on her life.
- 28:26She was working full time at her business with kids, at home,
- 28:33with a partner, and she had no boundaries around her time.
- 28:37And she got to a point where she was burning out, but it was also
- 28:41impacting her relationships at home.
- 28:44And she realized she had to do a reset.
- 28:47And she was. So she started.
- 28:48She talked about in the episode she started with this simple
- 28:51practice of simply not working outside of business hours and
- 28:57how from there that led her to see that when she actually
- 29:01started doing that and allowed her time to refresh and reset
- 29:06and fill her cup and spend time in meaningful relationships,
- 29:10connecting with her people. That when she was working, she
- 29:14was actually more in tune, more present, more creative, juices
- 29:20flowing, more productive in less time because she took that time
- 29:24to refill and connect with the things that filled her cup.
- 29:27So great episode talking about that.
- 29:30Our good friend Tara Temple, who you've met on the radio show, on
- 29:34the Lay on the Layer show, the panel show, and now on the
- 29:39podcast. And she is just the most wise,
- 29:43intuitive, tender hearted woman. I love Tara and she really hits
- 29:49on how letting go of how others perceive you especially and a
- 29:54little bit what we heard a couple episodes earlier from Cat
- 29:58Newport, but a little bit devoid.
- 29:59This is more, you know, in your family systems and and really
- 30:03realizing that when you start studying new healthy boundaries,
- 30:06especially the older generations who are very said in their ways,
- 30:11have been told there's only a certain way to do things and
- 30:14might be fearful of what stepping outside that looks like
- 30:18because it's never been an option.
- 30:20They were presented where you may have to be a little gentler
- 30:23with those as you, but that doesn't mean you don't honor
- 30:27yourself in showing up the way that you need to.
- 30:31Leslie Droppen, another one that speaks really well the
- 30:34boundaries, talks about her own healing journey, talks about how
- 30:40she really implements cycle planning around, you know, with
- 30:46her cycles and how she's able to show up throughout the month
- 30:50into her into this episode. She speaks so, so well to that.
- 30:54And we'll talk about that more in a minute as I go through
- 30:56talking points and things. We heard Andrea pass.
- 31:01She really uses her calendar as as her boundaries protector.
- 31:06So she uses cowardly. She sets her time in her
- 31:10calendar when she's available and when she's not.
- 31:12And she's very strict, may not be the right word, but very
- 31:17committed to if I'm available in my calendar, then I'm available.
- 31:22If I'm not available in my calendar, do not reach out to me
- 31:25and ask for time outside of that, because my calendar is
- 31:29what protects my time. Now if I reach out to you and
- 31:33ask you for time outside of that, that's something I've
- 31:36chosen to do. So I've done that.
- 31:38That's a choice I've made. I've determined that I have the
- 31:41bandwidth for that. But I thought the way she uses
- 31:44her calendar is really strategic and really smart and really puts
- 31:48it in play, protects her from maybe herself at times when she
- 31:52wants to put more in there then she's got the time or bandwidth
- 31:54for. We've got to meet our friend
- 31:57Lisa McCourt. What a joy.
- 31:58Lisa is literally a joy, no pun intended.
- 32:01She has the Joy School and she's also AP Flag regional president,
- 32:07so an advocate in her life. She has a transgender daughter
- 32:10and that's really brought her on this journey of being the P Flag
- 32:15president. But in the Joy School, she
- 32:16really works with women, helping them tap into all of those
- 32:22spaces and places that they've been stuffing for years, those
- 32:26emotions they've been stuffing, those childhood wounds they've
- 32:29been carrying. And she really helps them unpack
- 32:32those, identify where some of these root behaviors came from
- 32:38and helps them face them. A lot of what we talk about in
- 32:41layers, where we unpack our layers, we get curious about
- 32:45them rather than judgmental so that we can meet them, see them,
- 32:49move through them, and no longer have shame and embarrassment and
- 32:54anger and sadness and fear wrapped around them.
- 32:57And so. And Lisa's just just her kind
- 33:02wise spirit just exudes off her. So check out that episode if you
- 33:06haven't gotten to be with her yet.
- 33:08Kelda music love Kelda. She is hitting on all cylinders
- 33:12right now. She works in the entertainment
- 33:14industry. She's a journey woman in the
- 33:17entertainment industry. Follow her on socials,
- 33:19especially on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram.
- 33:22She's got a lot going on in the world right now.
- 33:24She's based out of the Bay Area but works down in in Southern
- 33:27California at times too. But she talks about a a gem that
- 33:31I really took from that episode. And I invite you to go back and
- 33:34revisit is be the same person you are with everyone you meet.
- 33:41And she talks about, and that can be difficult.
- 33:43She's a black woman in the entertainment industry.
- 33:45So she there's a lot of challenges that come with that.
- 33:50But that that powerful gem of be the same person you are.
- 33:53And she talks a lot about the layers journey too, and what she
- 33:57has learned about her layers and how her relationship with her
- 34:02layers impacts how well she shows up in the world.
- 34:06So it hits on that really well. Joel Holman, she talks all about
- 34:11the importance of seeing the case by case nuance in life,
- 34:15allowing the Gray not everything's black and white.
- 34:19So flexibility, even as we have these expectations and we have
- 34:23our healthy boundaries and we have our values in our why.
- 34:27Also within that, recognizing the nuance in life and that
- 34:31sometimes we've got to shift and sometimes you've got to be a
- 34:34flexible and to be able to meet life and where we might be in
- 34:40the moment might be a little different than a normal.
- 34:42So she talks about that really beautifully.
- 34:45Then our good friend Amy Donovan comes on.
- 34:48I love Amy so much. You've met Amy on the radio
- 34:52show. You've met Amy on our panels on
- 34:56Together We Feel. And now we got to bring Amy on
- 34:59the podcast this season. She's a boudoir photographer.
- 35:02She has a hilarious story about how she fell into that
- 35:06accidentally when a client whose family she'd been photographing
- 35:10for several years asked her to do a boudoir session with her.
- 35:14And Amy's like, she's like being the people pleaser I was at the
- 35:16time. I said yes, and then I had to go
- 35:18home and Google boudoir. Hilarious.
- 35:21But she talks about, I love this so much because she talks about
- 35:25what she has learned about the clients she works with and how
- 35:30it's shifted from. Are these photos for you so you
- 35:36can see yourself beautifully? Because she's had experiences
- 35:40where she's had clients come in to do photos.
- 35:43It's very common to do boudoir photography photos for your
- 35:46partner as a gift to them. And, and there's been times
- 35:50where women have been very disappointed by their partners
- 35:54responses and how hurtful. And so it really shifted her
- 35:58thinking of like, I want this to be an empowering session for
- 36:01women. So I want to talk to them when
- 36:03they come and approach me about this, about the importance of
- 36:06them doing this for themselves and the importance of them
- 36:10seeing themselves as beautiful and not believing all of these
- 36:16narratives that we hear about our bodies that are out in the
- 36:19world that are so harmful and so hurtful.
- 36:21So love, love, love and, and, and so much more.
- 36:25Wonderful, wonderful episode. Our friend Laura Helgerson,
- 36:28you've also heard from in our radio show last fall.
- 36:31She's going to be on a panel with this coming up this fall
- 36:34talking about this more. But her background is in urinary
- 36:38tract infections, both with the the struggle she's had with them
- 36:42throughout her life. And now she's working to
- 36:45advocate for women and provide resources in collaboration with
- 36:50other women across the world to help you know what to ask your
- 36:54doctor to help you know all the different support and resources
- 36:57that are out there for you to help you and remind you of the
- 37:01importance of advocating for yourself and medical setting.
- 37:06So many times as women, we get told it's all in our heads or we
- 37:12get it's minimize what we're experiencing in some ways.
- 37:16And let me mind you, the research on women's bodies
- 37:20didn't even start really with the NIH until 1992.
- 37:25I want to say. And there's like I said earlier,
- 37:28the clitoris and that organ in our body wasn't even included in
- 37:32any research until 10 years later in the early 2000s.
- 37:35So research is way behind. And there we've spent years as
- 37:39women being treated with our bodies, being treated with the
- 37:44knowledge that's been used from research that was dead on men's
- 37:47bodies. I don't have to tell you all
- 37:49that our bodies are not the same.
- 37:52So Laura speaks really strongly to that.
- 37:55So check that out. Tons of resources there.
- 37:58And make sure you check out our panel because she's bringing a
- 38:00couple of other women with her that help her in the advocacy.
- 38:04And then we're going to have our friend Isabella Foer, who's been
- 38:08with us in the past on the podcast panels and radio show.
- 38:12She's going to talk about how she helps women and, and how
- 38:16they're moving their bodies and feeling their bodies and fueling
- 38:18their bodies when they're dealing with urinary tract
- 38:20infection. So there's going to be a lot of
- 38:22great information. We're going to have a
- 38:23gynecologist that I just met recently here in Fresno where I
- 38:28live. She's going to join us for this
- 38:30conversation. So that's going to be coming up
- 38:32on November 3rd. But if you want to get resources
- 38:35right now for the UT TI issue that if you haven't had one, I
- 38:40guarantee you know people that have and they're, this is one of
- 38:43those things that we don't talk about enough.
- 38:46It's kind of one of those, you know, it, there's a lot of
- 38:49stigma and silence, kind of like what there's been years for with
- 38:53periods and menopause and infertility.
- 38:56That same stigma exists around UTI's.
- 38:58We got to blow the lid off of that and start talking about
- 39:01these things. And then we brought Vista
- 39:04Hurlbut on. I love Vista, tons of energy.
- 39:08We have a great conversation. Let me see where, Let me find my
- 39:13best in the other app. And she talks a lot about
- 39:16embracing her authenticity, living out of her own
- 39:19expectations, loving yourself well.
- 39:22And so great to have Vista on with us.
- 39:25And then Jennifer Johnson joins us, our superstar nurse that
- 39:29lives up in Canada to our friends to the north here in the
- 39:32US. She gets very authentic, very
- 39:36open. She's hilarious.
- 39:38I laughed so much in this episode.
- 39:40She talks about the importance of sleep and the the irony that
- 39:44in the medical health profession, you're asked as
- 39:48medical health professionals to push yourself to the NTH degree
- 39:52beyond capacity with these crazy hours and schedules and lack of
- 39:57sleep. Yet you're taking care of people
- 39:59to help them maintain their health, but you're not telling
- 40:02your doctors and nurses to live in a healthy way.
- 40:05There's just such a contradiction happening in this
- 40:08world and she dives into it. She's now become a source.
- 40:12For health professionals, she learned so much through her time
- 40:16through COVID. She learned so much through her
- 40:19time and her own family and her own partnership and, and being a
- 40:23mom of what she needed, what she needed to ask for, what she
- 40:28needed to demand for herself in those scenarios.
- 40:32But she has, she goes around now teaching these classes and
- 40:35resources on supporting members of the healthcare community.
- 40:39She's just a ton of fun. She's in what she now calls her
- 40:43villain era, and you got to hear her explain that it's just
- 40:47hilarious to spend some time with Jennifer Johnson.
- 40:50We recently were so fortunate to receive third place in the Women
- 40:57Who Podcast Magazine Awards, and ours was the Sheer Honesty
- 41:04category. And Jennifer Johnson's clip was
- 41:07the one that I submitted along with our friend Doctor Pooja
- 41:11Shah that was with us last in spring of 2024.
- 41:16They their two clips are the ones I submitted for those
- 41:18categories. And no shock at all that those
- 41:22clips and that the sheer honesty that and authenticity and
- 41:26vulnerability and truth that they brought, we're a huge
- 41:31contributor to us receiving that honor.
- 41:34So huge shout out to them and their willingness to come on.
- 41:37I sort of love about these guests, their willingness to
- 41:39come on and share with us their stories, their resources, to be
- 41:45authentic, to be honest, to be vulnerable.
- 41:50And I owe everything to these women because without them being
- 41:54willing to come on and have these conversations with me, we
- 41:56would not have a network that started so, so thankful to them.
- 42:01Our friend Amy Taylor. I love Amy Taylor.
- 42:03Amy's got her own podcast. Check out the resources page on
- 42:08embracinglayers.com to learn about her.
- 42:10Follow her podcast. She talks about mental health
- 42:13days, the importance of taking them, what it's like to live as
- 42:17a neuro divergent neuro spicy Mama, life and self-care, taking
- 42:23good care of herself through this, to learning to advocate
- 42:26for herself, continuing to honor her journey day-to-day and meet
- 42:30herself where she is. What it was like to get a later
- 42:33in life diagnosis with some of these things and how eye opening
- 42:36that was. Super powerful, vulnerable
- 42:39episode there. Make sure you check out that out
- 42:42and check out all that Amy's doing.
- 42:44Just support women in these areas.
- 42:46Our friend Lynette Weldon. Oh, you met Lynette in the fall.
- 42:50If you follow our radio show, she is a caregiver.
- 42:55She's been. She started watching her mom
- 42:58take care of her father when she was in high school and then it
- 43:02moved to having her own special needs child that is an adult
- 43:08now. But she still lives with her to
- 43:09this day until cares for her to this day and all that she's
- 43:13learned about being a caregiver and she's providing resources
- 43:17much like our friend Erin Copeland, but in her own way,
- 43:19she brings a different lens to it.
- 43:21Erin's care and her experiences were for her taking care of her
- 43:25husband and then later her grandparents, which she's been
- 43:29doing lately. Linds comes from watching her
- 43:31mom care for her dad. But then Linds had a special
- 43:34needs child, but also two other children that she was raising
- 43:38that she still needed to tend to and care for.
- 43:40She's just got a whole list of resources.
- 43:42So she really, really hits home the importance of loving
- 43:46yourself well, loving yourself fiercely and taking care of
- 43:51yourself, understanding that you as the caregiver must make time
- 43:56for you to give from an overflow so you don't burn yourself out.
- 44:01It's not only the one you're caring for that needs the care.
- 44:05You need the care so that you are coming from an authentic,
- 44:08healthy place and those you're caring for are getting the
- 44:11healthiest version of you with that.
- 44:14So great there, my friend Marissa's widow.
- 44:17You've heard from Marissa on the radio show, on the panels, and
- 44:21now on the podcast. Marissa really blows the lid off
- 44:24something that has to be talked about more.
- 44:27And it's the expectations that we send women out there in the
- 44:32world regarding what having a baby is going to be like versus
- 44:37what it's actually like. And then also talking about that
- 44:43postpartum health. It's not only postpartum
- 44:48depression that happens, it's other there's anxiety that comes
- 44:53up from the big changes. There can be depression that
- 44:56comes up from disconnection than the life we used to have and the
- 45:00life that we have now. And it's not the same thing as
- 45:03postpartum depression. And many times they try to, in
- 45:07the healthcare world, they try to lump that all together, the
- 45:10importance of separating out what's happening so that you can
- 45:13get the support and resources you need.
- 45:15And she's become an advocate for this.
- 45:18She's a therapist herself. And so I think, you know, so
- 45:21many times, and I've talked to therapists before, like you have
- 45:24all these resources and then these things happen to you.
- 45:27And then you really learn about the resources that you need and
- 45:31how the ones that you knew about are serving you.
- 45:35But there's also necessity or even deeper conversations and
- 45:39more resources beyond that. So love Marissa's truth.
- 45:44It's motherhood without the mask, identity, boundaries and
- 45:47postpartum truths. Make sure you check that out.
- 45:51Even if if this has not been your experience, I guarantee you
- 45:54might know someone just going to help you see the signs and to be
- 45:57able to tell the difference between postpartum depression
- 46:00versus someone who's just anxious and tired and Mora
- 46:04exhausted and burned out and a little disillusioned because
- 46:07maybe this postpartum experience isn't what she was told it was
- 46:11going to be. And then we get to meet my
- 46:13friend Kelly Martin Pierce. I met Callie here in Fresno
- 46:18through the Fresno's County Women's Chamber.
- 46:22She is about the age of my daughters, but I connected with
- 46:25Kelly right away. She talks.
- 46:28She goes into companies and helps them establish holistic
- 46:32Wellness programs. She started out in HR.
- 46:36She saw the need for these Wellness programs to have more
- 46:39attention, more focus. So that your work culture can be
- 46:44holistically healthy. So that your work culture can be
- 46:481, where you're exuding that you not only care about what your
- 46:51company is producing, but do you care about the people that are
- 46:55doing the producing, that they're well and healthy.
- 46:58She helps you with that. She also does one-on-one
- 47:00coaching. She's very passionate about
- 47:02women dealing themselves well, having a healthy relationship
- 47:06with movement, having a healthy relationship with food, not this
- 47:10diet culture BS that we hear about.
- 47:13She's got a ton of wisdom and a ton of resources and she talks a
- 47:17lot about overcoming people pleasing and guilt to releasing
- 47:22the guilt, setting those healthy boundaries, embracing that
- 47:26journaling's a big thing she does.
- 47:29It really helps her move through self doubt and those things
- 47:31she's struggling with. Really great, great episode with
- 47:34Callie Pierce. You got to hear from me and my
- 47:38original Co founder Valencia San Louie back in July.
- 47:41It was really fun to do that four year anniversary episode
- 47:44with her. It was really telling for me to
- 47:47be able to go through the talking points with Valencia and
- 47:51answer those questions myself. So if you're really curious
- 47:54about what I personally think and I'm experiencing right now
- 47:58with the talking points, go back and visit that episode.
- 48:01We did it live, but now it's available on all of our podcast
- 48:04platforms. So it was a ton of fun to do
- 48:06that with her. I brought our friend Valerie
- 48:09Rivera back. You met Valerie in Season 4 and
- 48:13she's got some new iterations that she is created within her
- 48:17therapy practice, much more holistic.
- 48:19She's got all kinds of, besides the therapy itself, she's got
- 48:23all of these other somatic healing things that are
- 48:28happening within her practice that she's always been her
- 48:32dream. And now she finally had the
- 48:34opportunity, got the financial support she needed to make this
- 48:38expansion and offer this even broader space for people to come
- 48:44in and heal. She's also doing workshops in
- 48:48with couples and working with them.
- 48:51And you can do what's the word I'm looking for, like weekend
- 48:56getaways. This is not the, I'm not coming
- 48:58up with the right language right now retreats.
- 49:02She's doing couples retreats. She's got this whole expensive
- 49:05practice. She is in Texas.
- 49:07She can only work with you in Texas in terms of her therapy.
- 49:11But if you want to be part of one of her retreats, couples
- 49:14retreats, you can travel from anywhere when, wherever the
- 49:17retreat happens to to. So check that out.
- 49:19We get an update from her, what she's learned about her life and
- 49:25this new expansion and being able to meet this dream.
- 49:28She talks about how her values have really shaped this holistic
- 49:33therapy approach. And then we got to visit with my
- 49:36good friend Kim Mosman. I met Kim in the fall of 2024,
- 49:40so almost a year ago. She and I, she's just one of
- 49:43those people. We're similar in age.
- 49:46Our kids are similar in age. We're in this kind of same,
- 49:49similar season in life, and we just hit it off.
- 49:51I felt like I'd known her my whole life.
- 49:53She helps. She's not only written her own
- 49:56books, Reflections of Joy just hit its one year anniversary in
- 50:00the spring. She's got this, my owner's
- 50:03manual, it's right here. I love this thing.
- 50:06It's a journal. It's a a workbook that helps you
- 50:11think through where you are and where you want to be.
- 50:16It's a great place to keep notes for what's going on in your body
- 50:21and your mind and your spirit right now.
- 50:24Are there things coming up that are that are a problem and
- 50:27you're trying to track patterns? It's really helpful when you go
- 50:30to the doctor or the therapist. I'm like, I'm experiencing these
- 50:33things right now. These seem to be the triggers.
- 50:35These seem to be what's coming up.
- 50:38Can you help me figure out what's rooted in them?
- 50:40I mean, it's just a really holistic, it's called my owner's
- 50:43manual. Highly recommended.
- 50:44I love mine. It's big, it's thick, but oh, so
- 50:47good. And Kim and I, we talked about
- 50:50her journey. We talked about healthy
- 50:51boundaries, finding joy and the daily intentions around it, and
- 50:56learning to choose yourself every day.
- 50:58She and our friend Rachel Lavin have kicked off their own
- 51:01podcasts together. You got to check that out.
- 51:04Go to theresourcespage@embracinglayers.com
- 51:06to check out the link for that. They met on a panel with me last
- 51:12fall, which I love. So that's another thing that's
- 51:15come out of our podcast this spring is people that have met
- 51:18on our platform have now created their own and continue as well
- 51:22to partner and network with us through panels and support.
- 51:25Kim is the one who suggested to me that I should have a workbook
- 51:30with the online course, and she put that work.
- 51:33She took all my notes, all my scribbling at all in the in the
- 51:37video. She was on my beta team for the
- 51:39online course to kind of help me put that together.
- 51:41I had a wonderful group of women from our network that you've all
- 51:44met on here. If you've been following us for
- 51:46a while, that helped me. And we're really the
- 51:48accountability and eyes and ears and that and she's like, you
- 51:51need a workbook in three days. She put that thing together,
- 51:53that workbook that you can get now when you go to
- 51:56embracinglayers.com, when you go to our online course page that
- 52:00was created by our friend Kim. So thankful to her and the
- 52:03partner she's been and the friend that she's become, but
- 52:06she's got some super great wisdom to share with you.
- 52:08So check out that episode with Kim, Unbreakable Day.
- 52:13Holy cow, guys, this story, if you don't listen to any other
- 52:18episode from season 8, you've got to go back and listen to the
- 52:23episode with Naseem Rochette. She literally has a day each May
- 52:30she calls her Unbreakable Day because of an accident that she
- 52:34was in. Oh gosh, was it 201829?
- 52:38I'm forgetting how many years ago now.
- 52:39This is what happens when you have so many episodes.
- 52:41Five to seven years ago, this, this, this happened.
- 52:44It plays out like a movie that you would see on Netflix.
- 52:47I'm not kidding. It is just the wildest thing
- 52:51I've ever heard. But her story and healing behind
- 52:54it was she learned about her life and herself, her
- 52:57relationships. It's really just impactful.
- 53:01So you got to check that out. It's called unbreakable day,
- 53:04surviving trauma and embracing healing with Nassim Rochette.
- 53:09Oh, Lana, we brought our friend Lana Manikowski back.
- 53:11What a gift she is to the world. You met Lana in the spring of
- 53:152024 for the first time on the podcast when and she reached out
- 53:19to me a few minutes prior to that maybe fall 2023, talking
- 53:24about being a guest, sharing her infertility journey and and
- 53:28really even more so, sharing her journey after infertility and
- 53:33the resources she has created for women for couples to utilize
- 53:39after they come out of this infertility journey.
- 53:42Because she found they released her from her last clinic visit,
- 53:47wrapping everything up and sent her on her way with no
- 53:50resources, no therapy recommendations, no book
- 53:54recommendations, no support group, nothing.
- 53:58Just send her out the door, which can be a very dangerous
- 54:00thing to do when you've been on an infertility journey and
- 54:03you've tried all the things you can try and they're they've told
- 54:07you it's not going to work. You can be in a very, very
- 54:12difficult, fragile emotional mental health space.
- 54:17And for me, to me, it's quite frankly irresponsible that there
- 54:21has not been more provided for these women and couples as they
- 54:26walk out the door. Well, Lana, like so many great
- 54:29women, decided to be the solution.
- 54:32And she started with getting, she created a podcast to talk
- 54:36about it. And then she got coaching
- 54:38certified. She can, you know, grief
- 54:40coaching and counseling and advising.
- 54:42She works with women one-on-one coaching wise.
- 54:45And now this last spring, she's released a book and and we
- 54:49brought her on the sub stack live.
- 54:51She's going to be part of the book club coming up in the fall
- 54:552025 into spring 2026 and this. And she does this amazing event
- 55:01in Chicago every Mother's Day weekend.
- 55:04It's on the Saturday, the day before Mother's Day.
- 55:07It's called the Other's Day Brunch and it's to bring women
- 55:10together. She hits really home with, we
- 55:13are valuable as women, period, whether we have children or not,
- 55:18whether we're married or not, period.
- 55:22And there is a there is a grief that can happen with it, with
- 55:27this realization. If you've been dreaming of being
- 55:29a mother and after years you find out you can't, what do you
- 55:32do with that grief? How do you move forward?
- 55:34How do you move forward with your partner in a healthy way?
- 55:37How do you embrace this, this part of you this season?
- 55:40She's just got so many resources.
- 55:42Check out Lonnie, even if you're not someone personally who's
- 55:45experienced this, you may. I'm sure you know someone.
- 55:50Wonderful resource, beautiful human.
- 55:52Just just a blessing. Oh, my new friends, Doctor
- 55:56Janelle Wells and Doctor Doreen McCauley.
- 55:58Their new book are invisible work, emotional intelligence,
- 56:03leadership and empowerment. You got to check out the book.
- 56:06You got to listen to Doreen and Janelle episode if you haven't
- 56:10already. It's just packed full of so much
- 56:13wisdom. They have done a lot of research
- 56:16on this. They have their own company that
- 56:20they've started that Janelle started and Doreen's joined her
- 56:22with other team members called the Wellsquest where they go in
- 56:25and help corporations with healthy cultures.
- 56:27They provide leadership training for that mid level management
- 56:30area, tons of resources. They wrote an episode in
- 56:34Psychology Today earlier this spring about weaponized
- 56:38gratitude. That came up with them when they
- 56:40were on a panel with me earlier this spring and they were.
- 56:44So they so kindly cited me, quoted me and that, but this
- 56:48invisible for women, this is all the work we don't get paid for
- 56:52and, and many in marginalized communities as well, All those
- 56:55things that are happening around us that sometimes just an A
- 56:58simple thank you or sometimes it needs to be added to our job
- 57:03description and we actually need to get paid for it.
- 57:05There's all different versions of it.
- 57:07But what they found in their research is the lack of
- 57:10acknowledgement of the invisible work is having a very, very
- 57:15serious impact on our health, on those that are doing the work.
- 57:19And so very important. Check that out.
- 57:23Grishma Shah, our friend Pooja Shah, who you've met on here,
- 57:26introduced me to Grishma Shah. They're not related, but
- 57:30introduced me to Grishma. She is doctor Grishma Shah.
- 57:33She's a professor at Manhattan College in, in the Business
- 57:38School there. And she's also an A a fiction
- 57:42author, which is unusual to find those in the academic world be
- 57:47many are non fiction authors because of all the research
- 57:49they've done and all the the educational, you know, books
- 57:53they put out there. But she's also got this other
- 57:55side to her that really tells, even though it's fiction, it
- 57:58really tells the story of her family, her immigration story
- 58:01and and her thoughtfulness through this.
- 58:03She's so smart, She's so intuitive, she's so insightful.
- 58:08Check out this. And her book is also going to be
- 58:10part of our upcoming book club. Oh, my friend Tina Mystery, I
- 58:15think you're out there listening.
- 58:16Tina, you know I love you. I met Tina through our Fresno
- 58:23County Women's Chamber of Commerce.
- 58:25More of those gyms are coming in our next season and season 9.
- 58:29And Tina is just she's a powerhouse.
- 58:32She's she leads a financial advising company here in Fresno.
- 58:39She helps women understand their finances, she works with couples
- 58:46and she makes sure that both of them are included in the
- 58:50conversation and in the discussion of understanding
- 58:53their finances. She knows how empowering and
- 58:55important that is. She was with me in a panel that
- 58:59kicked off the new year talking about the importance of
- 59:02financial education, the impact that this has on your health.
- 59:05But she also shares her own story in this of, of, of her,
- 59:10you know, learning from her parents, you know, being the
- 59:14first one to go out and live her life.
- 59:16She comes from a back, you know, Indian family and how their way
- 59:22of doing things, especially, you know, is a little different than
- 59:25her way of doing things now as she's living here, doing this
- 59:29work outside of the home in a less traditional way than our
- 59:33family's accustomed to. And the things that we can bump
- 59:36up against as immigrant kids with immigrant parents and the
- 59:39ways that we adjust and move through meeting our expectations
- 59:44versus their expectations and the pressure that's on.
- 59:46We've heard this conversation, you know, before with our friend
- 59:50Pooja Shah and we've heard this conversation before with our
- 59:54friend Paula Chorizo, You know, so this is a really important,
- 59:59honest conversation. Wonderful human.
- 1:00:02If you live in Fresno County, give Tina a call.
- 1:00:05Let her help you. She is a trusted financial
- 1:00:08advisor. She's not going to mess with
- 1:00:10you. She's going to be, it's going to
- 1:00:11be straight up. She cares about the relationship
- 1:00:14with you. She wants to know you and be a
- 1:00:18helper in your life, a supporter of your health in your life, and
- 1:00:21by understanding your financials well and how she can support you
- 1:00:25through that. Anat Perry, what a powerhouse.
- 1:00:28We found out Anat and I met via Podmatch.
- 1:00:32She she explains nervous system connection and how our nervous
- 1:00:39system moves through emotions and how we can move through and
- 1:00:43process them in a healthy way. The best way I've ever heard.
- 1:00:46She takes all this sciency researchy language out of it and
- 1:00:50really breaks it down in such a helpful, it's like a master
- 1:00:54class. And she, that's what her work is
- 1:00:56really tied into. And she not only she helps
- 1:00:59women, but she helps people like beat like.
- 1:01:01So if I want to really go and get connected, like I'm advising
- 1:01:04all these other people, I'm helping all these other people,
- 1:01:06but I need to really reconnect with myself.
- 1:01:08She helps with that. She and I found out that we both
- 1:01:12know Lulu Egg and I got to be part of Lulu's speaking virtual
- 1:01:19speaking event last June, and she was part of Lulu's speaking
- 1:01:23event the year before. So we made connections through
- 1:01:25Lulu. She's just released a Ted talk.
- 1:01:27It's connected on her resources page.
- 1:01:30It talks about this emotional mastery and nervous system
- 1:01:34healing really pointedly, but she really breaks it down so
- 1:01:38well in the episode. So check that out.
- 1:01:40It is super helpful and it's super applicable.
- 1:01:43We can all do this, we can all do this.
- 1:01:45So it really feeds into our mental, emotional, physical
- 1:01:48health talking quite beautifully.
- 1:01:50Oh, my wise friend Glenn Alex, what a what a treasure she is.
- 1:01:56She's a therapist. She's really helps people in
- 1:01:59living in total Wellness. She's got the Glenn Alex show.
- 1:02:03She is so authentic, so honest, so full of wisdom and knowledge.
- 1:02:09Such a great authentic conversation.
- 1:02:11She talks about what it's like to be a, a black woman in in
- 1:02:15America right now and all the noise that's happening and how
- 1:02:18unsafe that can feel. And so how she not only is a
- 1:02:22service to others, but how she's able to take these resources she
- 1:02:25has to support herself. Just a wonderful conversation.
- 1:02:30Oh, Anna Prizy, if you want to look up unapologetic in the
- 1:02:33dictionary, Unapologetic Anna Prize is going to be next to it.
- 1:02:38That's who you're going to see. She's the one that's going to
- 1:02:40show up. She did a live shift a few years
- 1:02:43ago where that that old script, you hear me talk about the old
- 1:02:46scripts a lot was not serving her.
- 1:02:49And so she flipped that script and she started living life out
- 1:02:54of her own expectations, her values, her why she's absolutely
- 1:02:59hilarious, has a huge TikTok in YouTube folly.
- 1:03:02You got to go check out her videos.
- 1:03:04They're just hilarious. But have a wonderful
- 1:03:06conversation and Anna brings you her podcast daily, many times
- 1:03:11from her own bed where she's comfy and cozy with all of her
- 1:03:14pillows and her big microphone. She's just a joy.
- 1:03:18Go check out Anna. Just just a joy.
- 1:03:21Oh, our good friend Amy Orr. Amy and Cheryl were with us last
- 1:03:25week. We'll get to Cheryl in a minute.
- 1:03:27They helped me wrap up season 8 with our guest.
- 1:03:30Amy talks about menstrual health and she goes into school.
- 1:03:35She comes to us from the Emerald Isle.
- 1:03:37She lives in Waterford, Ireland. She goes into the schools there
- 1:03:40and educates girls and boys about Minstrel Hall.
- 1:03:45She's got a great little diagram that she uses.
- 1:03:47It's very user friendly, very teach friendly, not that cold
- 1:03:53kind of pictures you see on the wall.
- 1:03:55It's very relatable. And she was able to really give
- 1:03:59them a full education, invite their curiosity, help them to
- 1:04:04have accurate information. And so we talk about that.
- 1:04:08We talk about period products that are sustainable that she is
- 1:04:13a supplier of and that's where she started before she went into
- 1:04:16the the educating part. But we it's a full ranging
- 1:04:19conversation. We talk about gender roles and
- 1:04:23identities. We talk about relationships and
- 1:04:25roles and relationships. We talk about parenting and
- 1:04:28motherhood and parenthood and sharing load.
- 1:04:32We just get into all we talk about sexual health and we just
- 1:04:35get into all the pieces and parts of all of these topics
- 1:04:39we've been told not to talk about, but that we need to be
- 1:04:41talking about so we can be healthy and not be alone in
- 1:04:45these conversations and have the resources we need and support we
- 1:04:49need to to to navigate this in a healthy way.
- 1:04:53So wonderful conversation with Amy or and then wrap up last
- 1:04:57week with another friend from my Fresno County women's Chamber of
- 1:05:00Commerce life lessons from Cheryl Schultz.
- 1:05:04Cheryl's like one of those people that's just naturally
- 1:05:06born to be on a podcast like she just is insightful.
- 1:05:11She thinks well on her feet. She brings in just such the
- 1:05:17honesty in what she's learned and where she came from versus
- 1:05:20where she is now. Very supportive of multi
- 1:05:24generational relationships and sharing the, the, the
- 1:05:28information with each other so those that are younger than us
- 1:05:31don't have to make the same mistakes and have the resources
- 1:05:34they need sooner. She talks about relationships
- 1:05:38and what she's learned about those over the years.
- 1:05:40I'm just just such a great, great conversation.
- 1:05:43Great way to wrap up those conversations.
- 1:05:46So that's season 8. I wanted to revisit that with
- 1:05:49you and take you through it. If you missed anything, I I want
- 1:05:53you. Every episode has so many
- 1:05:55treasures and resources, but every episode is about of a
- 1:05:58little different things. So there may be certain areas
- 1:06:01that are more applicable to you than others.
- 1:06:03So if there's some that you missed, they're like, Oh, I
- 1:06:05missed that one. I think that could be really
- 1:06:07supportive of me. Or the other thing, way to think
- 1:06:10about it too, is listening to all of the episodes.
- 1:06:15It's not only helpful to you, it informs you on how to support
- 1:06:20other women that are going through these things that it
- 1:06:25might inform you about something in your life that you thought
- 1:06:28was a certain way for everyone. That's actually not.
- 1:06:31It informs you about all the unique, different, far ranging,
- 1:06:36broad ranging, nuanced lived experiences that women in the
- 1:06:41world are having out there. So it's a really a great
- 1:06:43opportunity to keep informed and not only for yourself and your
- 1:06:48resources and those around you, but showing it for women
- 1:06:51unapologetically and a broad array of spaces and the way that
- 1:06:55feels supportive to them. Asking the right questions about
- 1:06:58that, like what feels supportive to you instead of just rushing
- 1:07:01in and assuming we know based on our own story, listening to
- 1:07:05other people's stories to see how it is they actually need
- 1:07:09support, what actually feels helpful to them.
- 1:07:13So I wanted to take you through that and, and hopefully give you
- 1:07:17some gems and things to think about as, as you, we revisit the
- 1:07:22Season 8 for me, but my last take away from Season 8 that I
- 1:07:28learned through as we continue to add these new things to our
- 1:07:33network. And I'm, I realized about midway
- 1:07:37through this month of August that my bandwidth is different.
- 1:07:40Now I'm not only, you know, doing the podcast, but I, I have
- 1:07:45a podcast, I have a weekly panel show.
- 1:07:49We have a book that I'm, that we're promoting regularly.
- 1:07:53I'm speaking more both in person and virtually.
- 1:07:57I've released an online course that we're promoting and making
- 1:08:01available and I'm doing and I'm now I'm offering the one-on-one
- 1:08:06empowerment sessions to do along with those things.
- 1:08:11And so my bandwidth is different now.
- 1:08:13And so instead of looking at my calendar as a series of time in
- 1:08:19my day, looking my, my calendar by my bandwidth.
- 1:08:23So if I've got a, a panel recording in the morning, how
- 1:08:29much bandwidth do I have the remainder of the morning for the
- 1:08:33kinds of meetings I'm going to take in?
- 1:08:34Because as much as these conversations are so wonderful
- 1:08:38and so supportive and many times energizing, there's also there
- 1:08:42they can be very emotionally and mentally tapping when you're
- 1:08:49very engaged, when you're listening very intently, when
- 1:08:52you're hearing people's all the parts and pieces of people's
- 1:08:54stories. So making more space for me to
- 1:08:58reset, reflect, refill rather than just, you know, oh, I'm not
- 1:09:05I'm not recording podcasts this month.
- 1:09:07So that means I can have all of these pre meets.
- 1:09:11Well, if I've also got a women's chamber luncheon that day, or
- 1:09:15maybe I've recorded a panel that morning, or I've been responding
- 1:09:20in emails to prospective guests and people that want to
- 1:09:24collaborate, Do I have enough room and bandwidth to give all
- 1:09:27those places and spaces what I need?
- 1:09:30And do I need to think about? So I need to look at each day in
- 1:09:33terms of bandwidth. And when I'm looking at it, I'm
- 1:09:36like, oh, no, no, no, I've got too much here.
- 1:09:38My bandwidth is going to need more space to refill after this.
- 1:09:42Being willing to make those moves and changes and reset.
- 1:09:46And I learned the hard way. Listen, I live out this this
- 1:09:49framework. I presented this framework.
- 1:09:52I learned it through my family and my therapist and people that
- 1:09:56are close to me in my network of of what works for me.
- 1:09:59And even still, I have to be reminded and my body has to send
- 1:10:03me messages. Knock, knock, knock, lady, you
- 1:10:06have overstepped on your boundaries and underdone on
- 1:10:09yourself care. You are tapped out right now.
- 1:10:11There's too much here. There's been a shift in seasons
- 1:10:15and what you're offering now, so you have to adjust with that.
- 1:10:19So I challenge you this fall as you go into well fall in the
- 1:10:24Northern Hemisphere, summer in the Southern Hemisphere.
- 1:10:27But as you go into approach a new season, try looking at your
- 1:10:32calendar in terms of bandwidth versus time in the day.
- 1:10:37So just a challenge for you to think about that.
- 1:10:39So on Thursday, before we wrap this up on Thursday, you're I'm
- 1:10:45bringing my team on, You're going to hear from my team.
- 1:10:48You're going to hear about what they do, how they look at the
- 1:10:52episodes, what they do to prepare and edit the episodes,
- 1:10:55what they do to create the promotions for the episodes, how
- 1:11:00they write the blogs and come up with the ways to engage for the
- 1:11:03episodes. And through that process, what
- 1:11:06they learn from each of these people, what stuck out to them,
- 1:11:09what makes them laugh, what makes them look at the world a
- 1:11:13little differently, What's surprising surprised them.
- 1:11:16And so you're going to get to hear a little bit more about
- 1:11:18their process, their input. They're all in their 20s, so you
- 1:11:21get a new fresh flavor from them.
- 1:11:23So they're joining me live on Thursday.
- 1:11:26It'll be our final episode of this season 8.
- 1:11:29It's going to be at 3:30 Pacific Time, 6:30 Eastern Time.
- 1:11:34If you miss the live, just like today's live, it's going to go
- 1:11:37to our podcast platforms and you're going to be able to catch
- 1:11:41it there. But yeah, you get to meet my
- 1:11:43team and hear from them and, and how this work has impacted them
- 1:11:47and what they learned this season as we made these shifts
- 1:11:51in offering more episodes and changing the way we roll things
- 1:11:55out there a little bit as we've added these other pieces.
- 1:11:58Because whenever I add a piece, it involves them as well.
- 1:12:02It might be an extra blog or another newsletter or more time
- 1:12:05on sub stack. It might be an additional
- 1:12:07promotion, adding new things to our website, readjusting the way
- 1:12:12our website reads more. You know, as we've expanded into
- 1:12:15our YouTube page, not only are we editing audio, but we're
- 1:12:19editing video and that's a different process.
- 1:12:21So it all it impacts them as well.
- 1:12:24And so it's a very important for me to stay in tune with them to
- 1:12:28make sure this is working for them, that they're finding a
- 1:12:32flow within it that I'm not just, you know, adding things
- 1:12:35Willy nilly and tapping out my team.
- 1:12:37So you're going to get to hear from them on Thursday.
- 1:12:40Thanks so much for being with me today.
- 1:12:42I hope this revisit helps you, maybe reminds you of some people
- 1:12:46you might want to go back and listen to again or listen to for
- 1:12:49the first time and and get that information, access those
- 1:12:52resources from them. If something really hits with
- 1:12:55you, go to that resources page, follow them, find them, learn
- 1:12:59from them. The hope with the guest is that
- 1:13:02we have this field framework. We have our key talking points,
- 1:13:06which for those of you, if you're new with me, you haven't
- 1:13:09been here before. Our talking points are, are I
- 1:13:12open a podcast asking people to introduce themselves by their
- 1:13:17character traits, which I was going to do today with myself
- 1:13:19and I forgot. So you're getting character
- 1:13:21traits at the end. I'm tired, I'm reflective, I'm
- 1:13:24grateful, I'm anxious, and I'm hopeful.
- 1:13:26That's where I am today. I may not be there tomorrow, but
- 1:13:29today those are the character tracks that are showing up for
- 1:13:32me. I usually do to that at the
- 1:13:34beginning when you work with me one-on-one, I do these things in
- 1:13:38a little different order. I start out with the layers and
- 1:13:41then we go into the character traits and then we go into the
- 1:13:43questions from a minute in a minute that come at the end of
- 1:13:47the podcast, but they do those at the beginning to kind of set
- 1:13:50a foundation for you to work from.
- 1:13:52Then we go into prioritizing self-care set, setting healthy
- 1:13:56boundaries. The connections between our
- 1:13:59emotional, mental, physical, spiritual, and sexual health are
- 1:14:02all connected. They all feed off of each other.
- 1:14:05Showing up for yourself and other women, unapologetically
- 1:14:08identifying your why and values and assessing if your life is
- 1:14:12aligned with those. Living out of your own
- 1:14:15expectations instead of others. Embracing all of your layers,
- 1:14:20your complex, nuanced, messy, beautiful layers and the impact
- 1:14:25that living out this feel framework.
- 1:14:27Finding empowerment, embracing layers has on your relationship
- 1:14:30with yourself as well as your relationship with other people.
- 1:14:34And then I asked guests 5 activities that nourish them and
- 1:14:38five words on how they want to feel the next six months.
- 1:14:41Those are important questions for you to ask yourselves.
- 1:14:44And so that's why when I'm working with you on the online
- 1:14:47course or I'm speaking to you, I will start with the layers
- 1:14:50question and then we will go into the character traits
- 1:14:53question so that you can get to know who you are, not who other
- 1:14:56people told you you are, but who you, how you identify yourself.
- 1:15:01And then five activities that nourish you.
- 1:15:04Those can be added to your self-care routine maybe.
- 1:15:07And five words on how you want to feel the next six months and
- 1:15:10what are you doing in your day-to-day to help yourself get
- 1:15:14to that spot. And now all those 5 words you
- 1:15:17want to feel the next six months, are they from you or
- 1:15:19other people too? Again, we're trying to bring you
- 1:15:21back home to you and all of our conversations.
- 1:15:24You have everything in you that you need to get the healthiest,
- 1:15:29most authentic version of yourself.
- 1:15:30Sometimes you just need a little support and reminders of how to
- 1:15:34get yourself there. I hope you have found this
- 1:15:36helpful and resourceful today as I've recapped Season 8 for you.
- 1:15:40You've got to hear from you a little bit about what I've
- 1:15:42learned, what I've drawn out of each of these episodes, how they
- 1:15:46can support you. Come back and join us live.
- 1:15:49Meet my team on Thursday. They work a lot behind the
- 1:15:53scenes. You don't always get to see them
- 1:15:55out front. You get to see Jessica a little
- 1:15:57bit more as we promote the book and we have, she runs our sub
- 1:16:02staff, but you're going to get to see all the members of our
- 1:16:04team and I'm super excited to share them and their insights
- 1:16:08with you. Without them, this thing doesn't
- 1:16:09roll. And they it's such a reminder to
- 1:16:13tap into those multi generational voices.
- 1:16:16We can learn so much from people that are younger than us.
- 1:16:20It it's not just us that has wisdom to share.
- 1:16:24They have wisdom to share too. So remember that as you're as
- 1:16:27you're encountering them, dealing with them, working with
- 1:16:30them, sometimes raising them. But thanks so much for being
- 1:16:34with us today. Thanks for joining me on this
